Timothy & Karic — THE BIG DAY: September 5, 2010

weddings in style 2011
THE RELATIONSHIP: Timothy and Kari Bianchi love baseball. It’s one of the biggest things they had in common when they met. Both grew up playing: Tim played right through college and now coaches, his brother plays for the Royals’ AA affiliate, and his uncle actually makes bats. Kari’s dad is a Little League umpire. THE PROPOSAL: Tim proposed on a Scrabble board, so during the wedding, wine charms on bride and groom champagne flutes were made from scrabble tiles in the letters T and K. THE BIG DAY: With diehard Phillies fans on the bride’s side and Yankee devotees on the groom’s, Kari and her mom created a cool vintage baseball theme
with all of the trappings: Crackerjack favors, oldfashioned cream soda and root beer, baseball gloves, autographed bats, even a trolley. The reception began with a light-hearted slideshow featuring baseball shots of Kari and Tim as kids. Kari, who grew up wearing low-top sneakers, surprised her dad by wearing Chuck Taylors personalized with “I (heart) Dad”…with her wedding dress! (For the father/daughter dance, her dad changed to his sneakers, too.) Adding to the theme were personalized matchbooks showing a sepia cigar-smoking Yankee. Bianchi bats, personalized by Tim’s uncle, were presented to each groomsman, and the tables were named and numbered for famous players of yore. Kari admits to forging legendary signatures on several baseballs;
guests were encouraged to autograph several more. Classic tunes from a baseball documentary were interspersed with memorable sportscasters’ homerun calls. The bridal party entrance, in a nod to the game, was made to Trace Adkins’ “Swing, Batter, Batter, Swing.” THE ASK: Kari’s mom, it turns out, is good at asking for things. Big things. Like writing a list of “The Top 10 Reasons the Philadelphia Phillies Should Sign a Ball for My Ring Bearer” and sending it to the team’s PR desk. One was, “Kari’s brother wanted to name her Pete Rose when she was born.” Another noted that Kari’s dad repairs baseball gloves. The plea succeeded: The ring bearer now treasures a ball autographed by left fielder Raul Ibanez. THE SERENDIPITY: When Kari’s mom pulled out her own wedding dress, the label, in some strange parallel serendipity, said Bianchi. They took it out and had it sewn into Kari’s dress as her “something old” and borrowed.
A home run reception at Lancaster's Cork Factory Hotel
This couple's love of the All-American pastime played a role throughout their big day details. Kari surprised her dad with personalized Chuck Taylors—under her wedding dress! Personalized Bianchi bats were presented to each groomsman. Tables were named after famous players with "signed" balls which guests were encouraged to sign too.

James & Kathryn — THE BIG DAY: October 24, 2009
102
weddings in style 2011
THE RELATIONSHIP: James Roman says, “We’re definitely best friends and we tell a lot of jokes. We work hard, but our lives are filled with laughter. Often Kathryn does something that really cracks me up, and that’s one thing I love about my life.” Kathryn’s take: “Our meeting was so random and happenstance I have to believe we were brought together. Part of our vows were, ‘God chose me to be your wife,’ and that’s what I truly believe.” THE PROPOSAL: Four months after James told Kathryn’s parents he wanted to spend the rest of his life with her, he had to reassure them he was still planning to ask her. Finally, on a sunset cruise in St. Thomas, he clued in the captain, handed him a camera, and proposed.
THE PARADE “PROCESSIONAL”: Honoring her years in New Orleans, the bride staged a “second line” processional down East Louther Street. This anyoccasion parade is popular in New Orleans; the hosts form the first line, and those who join in make up the second line. They all do the “second line strut.” Led by The Canal Street Jazz Band, guests laughed as they dodged puddles following a brief shower, which had just stopped, as people hung out their windows, smiling and cheering. Guests also enjoyed a pre-parade lemonade and popcorn stand. THE PARTY: While both Kathryn and James hail from Pennsylvania, and George Washington worshipped at this circa 1734 church in Carlisle, their wedding theme was anything but traditional. The cuisine
was eclectic, reflecting travels to South America as well as the bride’s Chinese heritage—think pad thai and paella. Latin/Asian fusion ruled, with seafood high on the list: fresh rolls with rice paper, sushi, raw oysters and more. (They had braced guests beforehand with: “This is not a steak and chicken wedding.”) Candles and strings of car lot light bulbs lit up the dance floor at the 100-year-old mill. Adding a touch of whimsy, clipped to a clothesline were childhood Polaroid-style photographs of the couple. Later, as the couple headed to their honeymoon, everyone raised sparklers, lining the sidewalk with magical light. THE HITCH: When it was time to pronounce them man and wife, Pastor Jack blanked on James’ last name. James prompted him, and the guests began laughing.
The sounds of New Orleans filled the streets of Carlisle as the couple and their guests dodged puddles during a party processional. Kathryn reveals her "something blue" heels.

Aaronb & Amy —
THE BIG DAY: October 3, 2009
106
weddings in style 2011
THE ROMANCE: Overall, “pretty magical.” Local jazz performer Amy Banks had been offered a part in The Lion King in Florida and was getting ready to move there when she met Aaron Harnish. He ended up renting her house in Lancaster. She thought: “Worse-case scenario, he might buy it.” The long-distance relationship took “a lot of intention” and worked despite the age difference— Amy is 10 years older. The house, still filled with Amy’s things, gave them a special connection. Never imagining himself married, Aaron soon found his mind changing. One freezing day Amy was in town and he took her to the Garden of the 5 Senses. (Not so romantically, both were wearing long johns.) Pointing out a small red box he’d placed on a log, Aaron pretended to wonder what it was. It turned out to be a ring designed around his late
grandfather’s diamond. For three months, his grandmother was the only other person who knew about it. THE BIG DAY: Echoing the theme of an ornament Aaron bought Amy on their first Christmas, the decor focused on “A Perfect Union” and Aaron’s Buddhist beliefs, including a chant during the ceremony, “kind of like a prayer for the world.” The vows included “to allow you to pursue your dreams, both personal and professional, here and afar” (Aaron’s) and “to recognize and support the greatest you…and to try to be on time” (Amy’s). A committed recycler, Amy and a friend made many ecoesque items themselves, including centerpieces using slate from her kitchen renovation. As a joke, since Aaron’s a city detective, someone flagged down an officer on
a bicycle who pretended to write Aaron a ticket for parking in the alley during the reception. THE ADVENTURE: For their honeymoon, Aaron wanted to show Amy Nepal, and scheduled a 10-day trek through Solu-Khumbu, near Mt. Everest. (Amy made it to 18,000 feet; Aaron stopped at 11,000 with altitude sickness and a g.i. infection.) But still, it was memorable.
Their wedding enlisted the help of friends and relatives from location, to planning and the details like making Buddhist prayer flags.

THE BIG DAY: Jen and James Pyne celebrated with a 2pm wedding, a cocktail hour, a reception, and an afterparty that didn’t start until 10pm. Spanish moss and magnolias, a shrimp & grits station, hush puppies, and a song by the Black-eyed Peas laid down a southern vibe. Jen’s father arranged a cigar bar with hand-rolled Charleston cigars, leading to “probably 30 to 40 people out on the porch smoking cigars.” Signature drinks—a Blue Nova Wildcat for Jim’s alma mater, Villanova, and a Folly Beach Flirtini for Jen’s, the College of Charleston. THE SWEETS: A southern tradition, a surprise groom’s cake was presented at the rehearsal dinner, meant to be cut there. Resembling Jim’s sheltie, Dublin,
the cake made it through a welcome party, the rehearsal dinner, and both receptions intact. Apparently everyone just wanted to take pictures of it. The official wedding cake, by Charm City Cakes, star of Food Network’s TV show Ace of Cakes, was a towering creation of pumpkin cinnamon, chocolate mint, and white chocolate raspberry layers, designed to serve 220 guests. Favors of "candy Grams” featured two of the couple’s favorite Christmas cookies with Jen’s late Gram’s recipe. THE HITCH: Jen, who has a sodium deficiency, fainted while she was trying on wedding dresses. As a precaution, the limo company stocked her ride with plenty of salty snacks and drinks.
A Southern-style celebration at The Hotel Hershey CLOCKWISE: Elegant stationery embodies the blue and brown wedding colors, which are also found in the seating cards, the bride's heels and bouquet, and even the retro '80s sunglasses worn by guests during the after-party.

Matt & Lauren —
THE BIG DAY: June 26, 2010
114
weddings in style 2011
THE ROMANCE: It’s probably not possible to know your spouse longer than Lauren and Matt Sadler have known each other: Lauren’s mom was Matt’s nursery school teacher, and their dads coached Matt’s T-ball team together. Throughout the years, they were often around each other—but not “together.” Even at college, they were conveniently nearby: Matt was Lauren’s brother’s roommate at Penn State, and Lauren attended West Chester University. Periodically Lauren’s mom would ask Lauren, “Why aren’t you dating Matt Sadler?” Eventually they both ended up in Acapulco for spring break, Matt ran into Lauren on the beach, and they connected in a new way. After their first date, Lauren told her mom, “I am done looking; Matt is the man I’m going to marry!”
THE THEME: From the bridesmaids’ Tiffany bow necklaces to the bridal gown to the reception chairs and even the desserts, bows were woven into this summer wedding’s theme. Vibrant pink and green tables created a dramatic stage for the reception. Crowning the inventive table settings were the cakes: A fantastic carnation creation and 20 other unique cakes, one for each table. Lauren made the bright, matching programs and place cards herself. THE CONNECTIONS: Matt and Lauren had known most of the guests since kindergarten, and their families were friends as well. So it follows that many moments throughout the day were rich with meaning. The couple had requested the band play “Sweet Caroline,” a Penn State tradition reminiscent of many tailgate parties. True
to form, the many fans in attendance echoed “So good! So good!” at all the right times. The band represented another tie: Growing up, Lauren used to go to Stone Harbor with her dad, where they heard the band 5th Avenue. She dreamt of having them at her wedding one day, so actually having them there (with the same drummer, no less) was very cool. THE HITCH: Lauren’s “something old” was Matt’s late mother’s wedding band, which was tied onto her bouquet. At some point it disappeared, but was eventually found, after someone procured a metal detector. Worse, the tuxes didn’t fit, even after being reordered (Matt’s tux was still being sewn onto him the morning of the wedding.) Still, as the photos show, this was a beautiful, storybook wedding.
Bows abound in the details of a Conewago Manor Inn event
Lifelong friends, Matt and Lauren Sadler celebrated their love on the grounds of Conewago Manor Inn, Elizabethtown with a summery array of greens and pink accents on the cakes, chairs, florals and more.

THE RELATIONSHIP: Matt Keim, drumming for an indie rock band called Anastasia Electric out of Philadelphia, happened to play a gig at Bube’s Brewery, where Alexis Biondi was working. Intrigued by Alexis, he admits he “kept harassing her all night long.” His persistence paid off; she eventually agreed to a date. A few months later, Matt shocked Alexis by suddenly quitting his day job and moving to Lancaster. “I couldn’t decide if it was creepy or romantic, but I went with romantic, and I was right, he is.” THE PROPOSAL: Fast forward five years: Alexis and Matt are walking down by the Susquehanna; the sun is setting. They are talking about the future and he pretends he has something in his shoe, and comes up with his mom’s engagement ring. (His mother had offered it to him “if you’re thinking about asking Alexis to marry you.”)
THE WEDDING: As a bride, Alexis is as different from her roller derby persona as you can imagine. When Alexis skates with Lancaster’s Dutchland Derby Rollers, she’s kind of, well, tough. But for her wedding it was all about Art Nouveau. Romance. Lace. “That’s the glory of roller derby,” says Alexis, “so you have an alter ego. I can be the polar opposite in my other life.” That explains why it’s difficult to reconcile this delicate bride with “White Thrash,” Alexis’ roller derby character. Her ivory lace gown, a la the 1920s, was set off by a coppery rose sash and a pin curl updo. Peacock feathers were front and center, accented by dramatic tiger orchids, ranunculi, anemone, and kangaroo paws. Matt categorizes the men’s awesome boutonnieres as “woodsy, something a hunter might wear,” with berries, hellebore, and blond wisps of bleached peacock feathers. Equally
singular was the cake. Alexis’ mom had cut out a picture of an Art Nouveau chandelier, flipped it upside down, and exclaimed, “Cake!” Recreating this look was a cake combining chocolate Kahlua fudge and chocolate mocha mousse with layers of pink champagne cake and white chocolate mousse and red raspberry filling. Toward the end of the reception, Alexis reverted to her other persona, partaking of the cigar bar, as did her maid of honor. THE HITCHES: The couple decided on tungsten rings. During the ceremony, Alexis’ ring wouldn’t fit on her ring finger, so Matt put it on her middle finger. Unfortunately, tungsten is not adjustable, so that’s where the ring will stay. The night before, a sudden hailstorm during the (outside) rehearsal soaked everyone. THE QUOTE: Overheard from a guest: “I can’t help but think that if anyone is going to make it, it will be Matt and Alexis.”
Peacock feathers were front and center accented by tiger orchids, ranunculi, anemone and kangaroo paws. An Art Nouveau chandelier inspired the cake. Alexis works at a hat company and posed for a pic in her boss’ hat.

THE PROPOSAL: For Christmas 2009 Andrew Tomson and Kiersten Mathieu had bought each other a trip to Puerto Rico. As they stopped at Andrew’s mother’s house before flying out, Kiersten was surprised to find no one at home. Andrew feigned innocence and quickly got ready to take her out to dinner at the country club. Kiersten should have been suspicious, because Andrew normally takes a lot longer to get ready. When he asked her to turn off the fireplace—which he knew she didn’t know how to do, he was just guiding her to the right setting—he came over to show her, but instead knelt down. Although they’d been dating for 6 years, Kiersten was taken by surprise. She called various family phone numbers to share the news, frustrated when no one answered. Andrew steered the car to a different restaurant, where, surprise, both families were waiting.
THE BIG DAY: In contemporary black with “punches of yellow,” the bridal party came off as both upbeat and classy. A lemon motif was woven throughout, symbolizing life, longevity and love. After leaving the church, the guests rocked out with a “literally crazy” band. Of primary importance to Kiersten (whose dream job is as a back-up dancer for Britney Spears) was to be able to “really move” in her dress … and she did. Speeches by Andrew’s brother and Kiersten’s sister evoked tears and laughter, but the kicker came before dinner: During the pictures, Andrew, who is an avid golfer, was handed a club by one of his friends who was playing the course. He teed up, swung and almost got a hole in one—all in his tuxedo. It landed right by the pin, followed by un-golf-like hoots. For the groom, this glory was eclipsed only by “the feeling of excitement, happiness and joy” the day brought.
THE HITCH: After the bridal party left for the church, Andrew found himself without a ride. Fortunately the photographer hadn’t left yet. THE BEFORE & AFTERGLOW: A Phillies-themed rehearsal dinner featured cheese steaks, Tastycakes, and Philly pretzels with hot mustard. Equally fun, a BBQ thrown the day after the wedding meant the bride and groom could sit down and have actual conversations with relatives and friends—difficult if not impossible on the wedding day. During their Hawaiian honeymoon, the couple swam with sea turtles and watched a sunrise from the top of a volcano, then biked down the mountain. Back at home, despite Kiersten’s 2am start time as the morning news anchor at WPMT FOX-43, Andrew remains “her biggest fan.”
A lemon motif symbolized life, longevity and love
Classic elegance abounded at Kiersten and Andrew’s wedding, including an antique car. tall dramatic centerpieces in a country club setting, a classic white cake with lemon design, and bridesmaids adorned in little black dresses.

Tips & trends for tying the knot this year
Elegantly designed dessert tables, like this one from The Couture Cakery in Camp Hill, continue to be a popular trend.
edding trends come and go, but this year brides are looking to the past for vintage inspiration; timeless traditions for everything from the cake and flowers to the style of the gown are in vogue. Whether you want to add just a touch of retro style to your wedding by serving a nostalgic dessert buffet or go all out with a vintage-inspired gown and ceremony, these tips and trends will help you plan the big day, with a classic style that is the perfect fit for 2011 brides-to-be.
LOOKS TO LOVE Two of the biggest trends for wedding gowns are lace and tulle. “Designers are focusing more on fabrics than embellishments now,” says Shari Kendall, buyer at In White Bridal Boutique, Lancaster (717-392-2018; inwhitebridal.com). Vintage is now a big trend, with styles moving away from the slim-fit mermaid look to a “softer, more classic look,” according to Kendall.

Lots of weddings now have a 1920s Art-Deco inspiration Black accents in the form of belts adorned with oversize flowers and jeweled necklines are accenting dresses that are now mostly all ivory. “Ivory is more flattering on most women and it’s a softer tone,” Kendall explains. Ballroom gowns are back in a big way. This style looks glamorous and classic on all women, and is an easier silhouette to wear than the previously trendy mermaid style. Brocade and lace lend sophistication for bridal looks this year. Lots of weddings now have a 1920s Art-Deco inspiration, including headpieces that feature flowers instead of feathers, and gowns with hidden pockets. Jewelry trends are highlighting pearl clusters and chunky pearls. “One significant piece,” Kendall says. “It’s either an earring or a necklace. One or the other, a single significant piece.” Erin Brosius, manager at Alfred Angelo Bridal, Harrisburg (717-526-4244; alfredangelo.com) says the big trend for 2011 is ruffles. “Down the front, down the back, all over,” describes Brosius. The drop waist is still the most flattering fit. Also, subtle embellishments are more on trend than all over rhinestones or embroidery.

WEDDING TRENDS
Three dimensional raised motifs are big this year as seen on this Justin Alexander tea-length gown at In White, Lancaster.
Brosius says that a hot color trend for bridesmaids is fuchsia and anything bright. Today brides are letting their bridesmaids choose their own style to fit their different body shapes. “Long, short, strapless, with straps,” Brosius said. “It’s all about individuality while keeping the look classic and stylish.”

Sending out a save-the-date card is now an essential part of planning a wedding. Melissa Weiler, owner of Persnickety Invitation Studio, York (717-741-2324; persnicketyinc.com) says, “Save-the-dates are very important now because people spend so much time and money on planning their weddings that they really want everyone to be there.” While most couples stay with traditional styles for their actual wedding invites, save-the-dates are a way to show more creativity and a perfect time to show photos. “More couples are now getting engagement photos taken, and so they include a photo on the save-the-date invite. It’s a fun and easy way to send out your photo.” Black and white, photo-booth styled save-the-date invites are unique and will make people look forward to being a part of your special day. Vintage-inspired invitations are de rigueur now, with marquee-like designs and styles imitating old-fashioned carnival posters.
FLOWERS FOR YOUR FETE Flowers are being used in a “clean-line way,” says Stacia McClune McCosmey, owner of Petals With Style, Lancaster (717-687-6677; petalswithstyle.com)

and Petals and Beans, Strasburg (717-392-4000; petalsandbeans.net). If greenery is used, it is different, with unique styles. Old glamorous themes are very popular in wedding trends overall, and that is reflected all the way down to flower arrangements. “Very elegant and romantic arrangements are what fit the mood right now,” McCosmey explains. The most popular flower continues to be the orchid ranunculus anemone, which has a vintage feel. Champagne colors coordinate well with this year’s gowns, and another color that McCosmey sees as popular now is yellow, which goes well with navy themes.
SWEET CELEBRATIONS Brides continue to be price-conscious when they book their receptions. “Hosting the ceremony and reception in the same place” is a popular trend, says Kristie Barney, director of sales and marketing at Altland House Catering and Events, Abbottstown (717-848-8257; altlandhouse.com). Brides are also choosing table runners
instead of specialty linens to add a pop of color at a fraction of the price, according to Barney. Many brides and grooms, especially more mature couples, or those who choose to have a more intimate celebration, are doing so by having receptions at area restaurants where chefs can create a memorable meal for a smaller group of guests. For favors, candy bars and candy buffets are a popular crowd pleaser, and another way of incorporating the color theme; tables are set with all different kinds of edible treats and little monogrammed bags or boxes for guests to fill with the candy of their choice. Brides have been choosing unique offerings for dessert, sometimes forgoing cakes entirely. For example, a buffet of pies is ideal for a fall wedding, with apple, pumpkin and any other favorite flavors. For summer, a lemon pound cake can be served with raspberry preserves for a light, warm-weather favorite, or surprise your guests with the classic summer staple, strawberry shortcake.
Brides are incorporating childhood favorites like popsicles and ice cream sandwiches into their big day desserts Jasmine Clouser, designer and manager of The Couture Cakery, Camp Hill (717-991-3885; couturecakery.net) says the continuing trend with cupcakes has inspired brides to be creative with them and create cupcake towers. “All of the cupcake towers I create have a small cake on top for cutting or saving for their first anniversary. Most couples opt for cupcakes because it is unique and much easier to serve than a traditional cake,” Clouser says. With cupcakes there is a bigger selection of flavors and there is less left over to take home than with a traditional cake. Clouser notices that guests enjoy grabbing a cupcake in between dances, and in addition it is “generally less expensive than a traditional wedding cake.” With society’s overall trend toward casualness, brides are incorporating fun childhood favorites into their big day. Popsicles and ice cream sandwiches are a fun way to serve a late-night wedding snack. For a winter wedding, hot chocolate with mini marshmallows is a nice way to cap off the evening. Those who want a traditional wedding cake are doing it with style. “Couples are selecting bright and bold colors and see their wedding cake as a piece of art that reflects their personality and style,” Clouser says. And according to this year’s trend forecast, looking to the past for wedding inspiration has never been more elegant or modern. W

rides want to be, and feel, beautiful. The stress and commotion of planning a wedding can easily leave a bride feeling–and looking–exhausted. In order to help you put your best face forward, we consulted with a local dermatology group, area spas, and a renowned makeup artist for all the tricks of the trade. The main theme is to begin your beauty regime early–as much as a year in advance–to ensure you look and feel your best come the big day. Get ready to kiss those sunspots, muscle knots, and fears of false eyelashes goodbye.

BRIDAL BEAUTY
BEST FACE FORWARD Begin with a dermatology consultation. Dr. Nancy McCullum from the Center for Cosmetic Dermatology in York (717-741-5512; www.centerforcosmeticdermatology.com) recommends meeting with a specialist a year before the wedding date. Most brides don’t realize how far in advance they should being thinking about their face, but many procedures take weeks, if not months, to complete. Every patient is advised to begin a skin regimen involving a daily cleanser, a moisturizer containing antioxidants, and sunscreen; the antioxidants in the moisturizer work to combat the damage from sun exposure. Also, sunscreen is most effective when it is an SPF of 30 or more and labeled as “broad spectrum,” to cover both UVB and UVA rays. “The biggest thing anyone can do is to protect their skin from the sun. Exposure breaks down the collagen and causes the skin to age faster,” McCullum warns. Being proactive about sun damage will alleviate the worries of sunspots and aging.
"The biggest thing anyone can do is protect their skin from the sun." -Dr. Nancy McCullum If you have fallen victim to the sun, or suffer from a dull, uneven complexion, Dr. McCullum suggests a series of microdermabrasions or facial peels. Microdermabrasion and facial peels work best over the course of a couple of months, but will also be beneficial if scheduled two weeks prior to the wedding day. A more intense approach is the Fraxel laser. This procedure stimulates collagen over the course of five treatments and a recommended eight months, firming the skin and giving it a youthful glow. For other skin ailments, such as acne, specialists prescribe the topical creams Retinol and Retin-A. In order to ensure a blemish-free wedding day, brides may need to make multiple visits to the center, depending upon the severity of the condition. In all cases, physicians provide their patients with special kits containing creams specific to their skincare needs. The Center for Cosmetic Dermatology also provides laser hair removal and spray tan services for a healthy glow. As for older brides, the mother of the bride, or those who are wrinkle-conscious, McCullum notes the popularity of Botox injections and “fillers” (as in fine line and wrinkle fillers). A trial run a couple months prior to the wedding is recommended to ensure you are satisfied with the results. Botox injections between the eyes leave the face looking natural and refreshed, something all brides strive for. There are three types of fillers: Juvederm, Radiesse, and Restylane. Fillers are most commonly used around the nose and the mouth, as well as for plumping the lips. These treatments are semi-permanent, lasting for about six months to a year. Giving your skin the attention it deserves makes all the difference come your wedding day.

Once you’ve prepared your skin, make sure to pamper your body. A must for every bride is a trip to the day spa. Physical relaxation is key to emitting a vibrant glow and refreshing the spirit. The new Laguna Pointe Salon and Day Spa in Mechanicsburg (717-458-5096; www. lagunapointesalonanddayresort.com) promotes an environment of peace and tranquility, ideal for a bridal party getaway. Many brides frequent spas a couple of weeks prior to the wedding for massages, facials, manicures, pedicures, and hair and makeup consultations at the salon. Many indulge in one of the spa’s bridal packages that includes their classic massage and signature facial. Owner Patsi Lilly prides the spa on providing large bridal parties with “their own space to feel comfortable. That way, they can have the true wedding party experience.” In order to anticipate every need, Laguna Pointe focuses on all the minor details, from what the clients drink to where they sit. It offers a private lounge where the bridal party can enjoy catering services between treatments.
Kiss those sun spots, muscle knots and fears of false eyelashes goodbye. Don’t forget the guys! Laguna Pointe also offers a groom’s package, including a haircut, manicure and facial. Well before the week leading up to the wedding, their bridal shower package reflects a new trend of holding your shower at the spa, indulging in facials, massages and drinks while celebrating. Carla Saylor, owner of Mandarin Rose Spa (717-207-4076; www.mardarinrosespa.com) at the Lancaster Marriott at Penn Square, finds clients really enjoy their services poolside. Many bridal showers and day-of bridal parties relax poolside and in the hot tub while indulging in the popular aromatherapy treatments. Saylor wants every bride’s experience to be personalized and feels Mandarin Rose Spa should “be a celebration place.” Every “spa party” is customized by bundling various packages together to ensure optimal pampering. The spa offers reflexology, hot stone and therapeutic massages, mini facials and foot soaks. She says many mothers-ofthe-bride find the paraffin hand dips rejuvenating while enjoying a fruit tray and glass of wine. Saylor finds bridal parties schedule their appointment the week of the wedding, usually the day of. Many brides visit the spa during the weeks leading up to the wedding for massages and facials. At Mandarin Rose Spa, it is imperative that the staff “soothes and smoothes” their guests while remaining receptive to all their desires.

Cristina’s secret must-have for brides on their big day: Rice paper for absorbing oil
THE FINISHING TOUCH The finishing touches for a beautiful bride reside in the proper application of make up. Regional make up artist Carmina Cristina (717-343-2805; www.carminacristina.com) pulls from her extensive background in both Europe and the States to supply her clients with fresh, chic and always polished looks. She finds there is much emphasis on the updated 1950s and 1960s look, featuring shimmer on cheeks for a luminous appearance, a soft lip gloss and false lashes for striking eyes. Many brides want to look natural, and Cristina accomplishes this by focusing on dewy, fresh skin, with accents that complement the existing natural beauty. This season, “even the timid bride goes with false eyelashes.” They accomplish a very dramatic look without the bride appearing overdone. Also, many brides are matching their make up with either their flowers or their bridesmaids’ gowns. While Cristina is aware of the trends, she is more concerned with fulfilling the wishes of the bride. She finds that airbrush make up always gives brides the flawless results they desire, especially in photographs. Cristina recommends a consultation at her studio a month prior to the wedding to evaluate the condition of the bride’s skin and design the final look. Once everything is finalized, she travels to her client on the day of the wedding to make the occasion as easy and stress-free as possible. Cristina’s bridal party packages, ranging from silver to platinum, are sure to satisfy every style. The platinum package includes the bonus feature of Cristina’s personal touch-ups and adjustments after the initial application. Her secret must-have for brides on their on the big day: Rice paper for absorbing oil. Too much oil production causes make up to cake and run, so having blotting paper close by is reassurance you’ll maintain your look. In her little gift bags to the brides she includes a sampling of their lip gloss, lip liner and lipstick for day-of touchups. Use these checkpoints and area experts’ advice to simplify your pampering preparations so you can relax and be well on your way to your beautiful big day. W
