•
a resident in the UK for 3 years prior to the start of the course
•
have not previously taken out a loan to do the same qualification type and level of qualification
How to apply
“Applying for the 24+ loan was easy and I have had help with my childcare too. It has given me more than any financial gain, it has given me my life back whilst enabling me to still be a great mum to my girls.”
1. You can apply for a loan from April 2015 for courses that start on or after 1 August 2015. 2. Apply for a loan from the Student Loan Company. Visit www.gov.uk/advanced-learning-loans for more information. Please note: The loan is available irrespective of the student’s current employment status and the loan will not be means tested or subject to any credit check. Once you have applied for the loan you don’t need to do anything to pay the course fee – the loan will be paid directly to the college on your behalf.
Grace Isted, Beauty Therapy student
Repaying the loan
If your loan is for an Access to Higher Education course and you progress and complete a Higher Education course*, your loan will be written off, meaning you won’t have to pay it back!
Repayments don’t start until April 2016. You will pay back your loan (plus interest) when you finish your course and earning more than £21,000 a year. Your repayments will stop if your income drops below £21,000 a year. You pay interest from the time your first payment is made until you pay your loan back in full. Your monthly repayment amount will be 9% of any income you earn over £21,000. For example: £7 a month – if you earn £22,000 a year £30 a month – if you earn £25,000 a year Making repayments If you’re an employee, your employer will work out your repayments and take them out of your salary with your tax. If you’re self employed, you make repayments as part of your self assessment tax return.
You can pay some or all of your loan at any time without an extra charge. Leaving or changing your course You will have to pay back any money (plus interest) that has been paid to your college or training provider if you leave or change your course after two weeks. You will need to speak to one of our student advisers to see if they can transfer the loan to another course. *

WHAT OUR STUDENTS SAY BE INSPIRED
After training as an actress at stage school, Grace had two children and found herself as a single mum living in Rye. Grace found a Beauty Therapy course at Sussex Coast College Hastings which interested her and realised 24+ loans were available.
Mahdy Al Gaaly is a mature Egyptian-born British student, studying ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) at Sussex Coast College Hastings. He was referred to SCCH by his case worker at the Job Centre and has never looked back.
‘Doing this course has completely changed my life. The college couldn’t do enough to help resolve every issue I have had, the college has taken off my hands. The 24+ loan was paid straight to the college and I have had help with my childcare too. The course has given me more than any financial gain, it has given me my life back whilst enabling me to continue to be a great mum to my girls.’
“Sussex Coast College Hastings is a modern building with an abundance of resources for students to learn. As an outsider I had very limited knowledge of the facilities available, but as a student I have had a great opportunity to access facilities within the building, which support my intellectual and social abilities.
Grace has a 5 year plan, hoping to continue her Level 3, specialising in skin care, then gain experience for a year before going freelance and opening her own salon.
The college is very near the town; a group trip to the Old Town with my teachers explored historical places of interest, which I was unaware of.” Mahdy Al Gaaly, ESOL student
Grace Isted, Level 3 Beauty student
‘I chose to study at Sussex Coast College as the engineering department had an excellent reputation and the course suited my needs. SCCH is a very ‘hands on’ college, especially at the Ore campus, where you are given the opportunity to use industrial equipment and machinery without being restricted due to it being an educational establishment. It really gives you the experience of ‘real’ welding, due to the workshop environment, and totally prepares you for the world of work.’ ‘I enjoy studying here because there are industrial standard facilities and the staff are knowledgeable. The course fits around work perfectly as it is in the evenings.’ Rod Nelson, part-time Welding student
“I worked as a part-time welder when I came back to college to gain qualifications in machine shop skills. I was inspired to progress on to the BTEC Level 3 National Certificate in Engineering. I discovered a true passion for engineering and found the confidence I needed to be myself, instead of being what others expected. I am very happy to be unconventional! I went on to study the HND in Mechanical Engineering and won a regional award for Outstanding Progression to Higher Education. I am now teaching Engineering at Sussex Coast College Hastings.” Debbie Attewell, Level 4 Engineering student
WHAT OUR STUDENTS SAY
“I studied TAQA and PGCE Cert Ed part-time in order to gain my teaching qualifications. Part-time studying meant I could continue to work, whilst learning at the same time. I found the course at SCCH to be of a very high standard, with tutors who understood my needs. I am now a fully qualified teacher, employed by the college. Thanks to my part-time course, I am able to give my students a high standard of learning. Studying part-time has given me confidence in my abilities and made me curious as to what I will learn next…” Rob Donachie, PGCE student
Stella took her time when deciding to return to learning as she had a lot to consider - giving up work, planning for her children’s care and running a home. ‘Once I was enrolled I was even more nervous, sitting in a room full of intelligent youngsters who were used to being in education. Then there is me, who has been out of it for a long time. I soon proved to myself that I was capable of taking information in and putting assignments together. When I received my first Distinction, I cried with happiness and through it I gained confidence, which is something I’ve always lacked. I have learnt so much whilst on this course and had some brilliant experiences, both in and outside the classroom. This includes a range of placements which have helped steer my career decisions in the right direction. Stella Cowell, Level 3 Health and Social Care student
‘I have learnt so much on my course, starting with the roles of working overseas, cruises, business travel, geography, attractions around the world, marketing, and global distribution services along with selling skills, customer service skills and teamwork. In fact, as I’m writing this I can hardly believe how much I have actually achieved! I have been to Gatwick airport both landside and airside and experienced the World Travel Market, which is the most prestigious travel event of the year, all thanks to SCCH. This year I have to plan my own travel event and undertake some very difficult exams but I know I will achieve my goals. In fact, what used to scare me now excites me.’ Melanie Sherry, Travel and Tourism student
“It is hard to know what you want to do with your life when you are 16 years old; I just decided to go with the flow. I always wanted to be a hairdresser, but I was persuaded not to by my family. Now I have finally decided to follow my dream career. Studying at SCCH was an easy decision. The location is perfect for me and I love the facilities. It is also a Wella College of Excellence which made it a clear choice for me. I was extremely worried that I would be the only adult on the course, but I couldn’t be more wrong. At least half of the class are adults, allowing us to learn from each other. We all get on really well and there is a great atmosphere.” Emma Heritage, Level 3 Hairdressing student

She was told about the Traineeship scheme by one of her tutors and decided to embark on the 12 week programme, helping her gain her maths and English grades to progress onto the Apprenticeship she had her heart set on. Shannon has now progressed on to her Mechanics Apprenticeship with 247 Transport in Hastings and is enjoying every minute. ‘It is intense but I wouldn’t be where I am today without it. It has been worth every minute’ says Shannon. Project Co-ordinator Tony Giles said, ‘The course consists of two weeks of employability training, including confidence building, job search, personal statement, interview techniques, CV writing and so much more.’ Shannon concluded, ‘I want to keep working with cars and keep doing what I love doing, which is being a mechanic. It is great to have progressed from a Traineeship to an Apprenticeship.’
