Station Plaza Sussex Coast College Hastings Station Plaza campus is based next to Hastings train station, just a two-minute walk from the seafront. Courses located here include A-Levels, Art & Design, Business, Catering, Childcare, ESOL, Health & Social Care, Hospitality, Higher Education, Foundation Learning, Hair & Beauty, Public Services, Supported Education, Sport, and Travel. The large, light-filled atrium is surrounded by 22,000 square metres of study spaces and social zones. Classrooms are equipped with up-to-date resources and interactive whiteboards. Station Plaza also houses IT suites, a gym, exhibition areas, Dine, Coast Coffee, Coast Restaurant, a training kitchen, a professional salon and a large Learning Resource Centre (LRC).

Ore Valley Our Ore Valley campus is less than a one minute train journey from Hastings train station. Courses located here include Access to Higher Education, Construction, Engineering, IT, and Music Technology. The campus has 7,000 square metres of realistic working environments, workshops and â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;live buildâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; areas. In the central atrium, students can construct, wire, plumb, fit-out and decorate a full-size house. Students have access to a sports pitch, the latest equipment and digital technology, LRC, diner and coffee shop.

Automotive Training Centre The Automotive Training Centre offers hands-on training and qualifications in all aspects of vehicle maintenance and repair. The centre is located on the Northridge Industrial Estate, has IMI (Institute of Motor Industry) awards accreditation and approval to deliver various levels of motor vehicle maintenance and repair programmes and apprenticeships. The equipment available to students is sponsored by Snap-on, supporting their learning experience through good quality tools.

Take advantage of our amazing facilities DINE The refectories at Station Plaza and Ore Valley serve tasty hot and cold lunches, sandwiches, desserts, fruit, snacks and drinks. The refectories are run by staff and students and food is freshly prepared on site and comes at highly competitive prices. Open every weekday during term time.

COMPUTER SUITES There are 750 workstations and laptops for students to use. The college is fully networked, with high speed internet, online study resources and industry-standard software. There is wireless internet access throughout the Station Plaza and Ore Valley campuses. Students can access their college email and shared area from home, through the college website. As well as our virtual learning environment (VLE) Turing.

COAST RESTAURANT Our restaurant in Station Plaza offers a fine dining experience in modern and intimate surroundings. The students prepare, cook and serve dishes under professional supervision as part of their training, using seasonal and local ingredients wherever possible. The restaurant is an excellent venue for small or large parties, providing a relaxed and professional atmosphere for business and social events.

LEARNING RESOURCE CENTRES (LRC) There are LRCs at Station Plaza and Ore Valley, catering for different learning styles with quiet zones for research, computer work and study. There are other areas for group work and discussion. The automated self-service issue and return system means library staff are free to support students with their research.

What are you looking for? You can enhance your skill-set and knowledge in any of our subject areas. On completion you may gain a qualification or gain valuable experience. We offer a range of accredited (qualification) and nonaccredited (hobby/leisure) courses. The qualification based courses tend to be more expensive than hobby/leisure courses as you receive a qualification upon completion of the course.

To get on to an accredited course you may have to provide proof of your previous education during enrolment. If you don’t have the correct qualifications to get on your chosen course then our Student Services Team will advise you on what is required for that course or suggest an alternative course that might suit you.

We can help make sure you choose the right course. Studying takes time and commitment, so you need to make sure you get what you want out of it. Contact our Student Support Team for independent advice and guidance on choosing a suitable course for you.

For all courses you must complete an Enrolment Form. You can find an enrolment form in the middle of this prospectus. Some courses fill up very quickly so you are advised to apply early. Please note that completing the form doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t commit you to a course or guarantee you a place. If you need any help, contact Student Services to guide you through the form.

If you do not need an interview, please ensure that you bring the appropriate and correct payment and/or relevant benefits evidence with your form at enrolment.

Bring your enrolment form to the college to enrol on your course. During enrolment, you will receive information on the start date of your course, your tutor, which campus you will study at, and your student ID. If you canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t attend the college in person, send us your enrolment form and a member of our Student Services Team will contact you. If you have not received an acknowledgement within seven working days, please contact us.

If an interview is required, please do not send payment. Once you are invited to an interview, come prepared to pay, or show relevant benefits evidence. If your employer is paying, bring a headed letter (with purchase order number). Please turn to page 11 for guidance on fees and how to pay them.

Depending on your course, you may be required to attend an interview. Once we receive your application, we will contact you with an interview date. If you cannot attend, please contact the college to reschedule. If your interview is successful you will receive a placement offer.

Course fees and payment Depending on your circumstances you may be eligible for financial support. Learn more about our fees and how the college can help you. The following fees are for 2016-2017 academic year only, payable when you enrol. You should pay prior to the start of the course. All additional costs can be discussed at enrolment. It is also important to note that eligibility criteria may

be subject to change, based on government changes.

How can I pay for my course? For courses lasting less than 15 weeks and any courses costing less than £200 (total of tuition and certification fees), you will be expected to pay in full when you enrol. You can pay by cash, cheque or card. For courses lasting at least 15 weeks and costing £200 or more, you can sign up for our instalment payment plan – please see ‘Spreading the Cost’. If your employer, sponsor, Student Loan company or managing agent has agreed to pay for your course, you will need to bring confirmation from them.

Spreading the cost Payment in instalments is available for courses costing over £200 that last longer than 15 weeks. ■ For course fees below £400, a deposit at enrolment of £100 is followed by three equal instalments during the course. ■ For course fees above £400, a deposit at enrolment of 25% is followed by three equal instalments during the course. ■ The instalment payments can be taken either on a credit or debit card that will still be in date on the third instalment payment date. Or alternatively you may pay by Direct Debit. If you would like to pay by instalments, you will need to complete the fee payment form during enrolment. The forms will be available from Student Central.

Is there other financial support available? As a Further Education student you may apply for help towards the cost of books, equipment, trips/visits, childcare and travel. If you are a Higher Education student, you should apply online at www.direct.gov. uk/studentfinance. For more information, please contact Financial Support on 01424 458465.

How much do you pay? Our courses have three fee bands: A, B or C. Please see below to find out which band is relevant to you.

Fee A I am aged 16-18

I am on benefits but not JSA or ESA (WRAG)

For courses that you gain a qualification from, tuition and certification fees are usually free if you are 16-18 (on or before the 31st August 2016) this may vary depending on the qualification. However you will be required to pay for all materials and any re-sits, along with exam fees if you fail to attend or withdraw.

The course will be free if you are currently unemployed, have the right to work in the UK and are wanting to enrol on the course to enter employment. Also if you are in receipt of one of the benefits: Council Tax Benefit, Universal Credit, Housing Benefit, Income Support, Working Tax Credit, Employment Support Allowance (ESA not in the Work Related Activity Group) or you are an Asylum Seeker in receipt of an income based benefit. Evidence of your benefits will be required e.g. award notice or official letter.

Some courses are not funded by our funding bodies for example all leisure / hobby courses where you do not obtain a qualification, will require payment of the full amount stated in Fee A. Exemption from fees may not apply if you are still in full-time education or if you have been living outside of the UK within the last three years. Call 01424 458475 for more information.

I am enrolling for a GCSE Maths/English course GCSE courses are free if you don’t already have a grade A-C in English and Maths, and you are over the age of 16.

I am aged 19-23 and it’s my first full Level 2 qualification* Level 2 fees are waived if it is your first Level 2 course. This may be different for learners studying a course in the workplace.

I am aged 19-23 and it’s my first Full Level 3 or 4 qualification* Level 3 fees are waived if it is your first Level 3 or higher course. This may be different for learners studying a course in the workplace.

I am on JSA or ESA (WRAG) If you are on Job Seeker’s Allowance, (including JSA National Credit only or Employment and Support Allowance in the Work Related Activity Group for skills training) you are entitled to free tuition and certification fees, in order to help you get into work (not applicable to full cost courses). Additional fees may still be payable. Evidence of benefit will be required, e.g. award notice or official letter stating the type of benefit you are receiving. A Jobseekers card is NOT acceptable evidence. You will need to provide your National Insurance number. If you are a dependant of a claimant but not part of a joint claim you are not automatically eligible for full remission but may be eligible under other criteria (see below).

* The qualification must also be on the Government’s Legal

Entitlement List. Most courses are on the list, however, please contact the College to see if you are affected by this.

Fee B Cost of the course for those not in band A or C If there is only one fee stated or you do not meet Fee A or C, you will have to pay this amount.

Fee C Full cost If you are aged 19+ there is no longer any fee remission or subsidy for studying a Level 3 or 4 course. You, an employer or sponsor will be required to pay the full fee, this may be paid by instalment plan if the course lasts at least 15 weeks and costs £200 or more. However, you may be eligible to take advantage of an Advanced Learner Loan. Please see how to apply for the Advance Learner Loan at gov.uk/advancedlearnerloan.

International student or just moved back to the UK? If you have lived outside the UK or you are an international student, your fee will vary from those listed with the courses. Please contact our Student Advisers on 01424 458475 for more information.

Refunds Where the College cancels a course prior to its start date or alters the location or time, such that a student cannot attend, a full refund will be made. If a student needs to cancel their course, and does so in writing to Student Services 14 working days before the course start date, we will make a full refund minus an administration charge as detailed in the Tuition Fee Policy. If an individual or employer cancels less than 14 working days before the start of the course then the College operates a ‘no refund policy’. If a refund is requested on the grounds of quality, this should be sent in the first instance to the Quality Department at quality@sussexcoast.ac.uk. Please refer to the refund policy that can be made available for you on request. The rules on fees and funding are complex and potential students are encouraged to contact the Student Adviser team to discuss their particular circumstances on 01424 458475.

How could Advanced Learning Loans help you? If you are 19 or over and want to study a Level 3 to 6 course, you maybe eligible for an Advanced Learner Loan. These loans are straight forward and will cover the cost of your course (fee C). These loans are similar to university tuition loans, introduced by the government to support students who want to further their education or even go on to university. Loan eligibility doesn’t depend on your income and there are no credit checks.

Students will therefore have the option to either: ■ Pay all of the course fees themselves ■ Have an employer/sponsor pay the course fees for them ■ Apply for an Advanced Learning Loan to help pay for the course tuition fees

To qualify you will need to be: ■ Aged 19 and above at the start of the course ■ Enrolling on an eligible course at Level 3 to 6 (Level 3 or 4 only if your course begins before 1 August 2016) which includes A-levels, Access to HE Diplomas and other Vocational Qualifications. ■ A resident in the UK for 3 years prior to the start of the course ■ Studying with college in England

How many loans can I get? You can have up to a maximum of four Advanced Learner Loans in total: •

If you started your course before 1 August 2016, you can only take out one loan at a time for non A-Level courses and you can’t get a second loan for a course of the same type and level as the one you’ve already completed.

•

If you start your course on or after 1 August 2016, you can apply for up to four loans at the same time for courses of any eligible type and level. You should speak to your college or provider to check that the combinations you would like to study will benefit you and lead to progression.

•

For A-Levels you can apply for a loan to fund each course you take towards your A-Levels - up to a maximum of 4 A-Levels. This means you can have up to 8 loans at once if you’re taking each A-Level as 2 separate courses. The courses must be in the same subject to qualify for a full A-Level.

What courses will it cover? The minimum loan amount is £300. Therefore any level 3 to 6 course that is over £300 could be eligible for a Advanced Learner Loan. Please note that these loans do not cover Degrees or other forms of Higher Education (HE). For information on funding for HE go to gov.uk/student-finance.

Applying is easy Apply online or download an application form at gov.uk/advancedlearnerloan. You can take out a loan for the maximum amount to cover your fee or you can pay all or part of the fee yourself. The loan is available irrespective of your current employment status and the loan will not be means tested or subject to any credit check. Once you have applied for the loan you don’t need to do anything to pay the course fee – the loan will be paid directly to the college on your behalf.

Repaying the loan Repayments are straight forward - your monthly repayments will be based on your income, not what you borrowed. You’ll be due to start repaying your loan in the April after you leave or finish your course – whichever comes first. You will pay back your loan (plus interest) when you finish your course and earning more than £21,000 a year. Your repayments will stop if your income drops below £21,000 a year. You pay interest until you pay your loan back in full. Your monthly repayment amount will be 9% of any income you earn over £21,000. For example: If you earn £22,000 a year - you will pay £7 a month If you earn £25,000 a year - you will pay £30 a month Making repayments If you’re an employee, your employer will work out your repayments and take them out of your salary with your tax. If you’re self employed, you make repayments as part of your self assessment tax return. You can pay some or all of your loan at any time without an extra charge.

Leaving or changing your course? You will have to pay back any money (plus interest) that has been paid to your college or training provider if you leave or change your course after two weeks. You will need to speak to one of our Student Advisers to see if they can transfer the loan to another course.

Access to HE Courses If you’re undertaking an Access to HE Diploma and then go on to complete an HE qualification, the outstanding balance of your Advanced Learner Loan will be written off. You can only get one Advanced Learner Loan to fund an Access to HE course. To qualify for this write off you must fully complete both your Access to Higher Education and Higher Education course at university. The HE course doesn’t need to relate to the Access to HE course you complete. The HE course must be eligible for funding by Student Finance England.

Our skills strategy and local businesses We are committed to working with businesses and getting people into the workplace, into careers that they enjoy. We are developing a skills strategy to fulfil the Hastings and Rother local skills demand, by offering informative first class education from non-accredited learning through to Higher Education and employment. We would like to work with businesses, targeting four key areas, that will generate value for both business and employee:

Work placements and visits

This year, the college has 1,700 16-18 year old students who are seeking work placements as part of their Employability and Work Skills programmes. Placements give young people a real taste of work and improve employability.

The college works with businesses to provide immediate, bespoke and flexible training to optimise productivity. We can provide a tailored set of accredited qualifications, along with coaching and specific workshops, to enhance the performance of your company’s workforce.

Businesses can offer students the opportunity to visit their premises, come into college to talk about their business, and the sector they work in. This will inspire our learners and give them an enriched understanding of the skills that businesses are looking for. Apprenticeships Apprenticeships are one of the fastest-growing ways of increasing capabilities in the workplace. Heavily supported by central government, they are an affordable way to gain an employee and support young people as they take their first steps into work. Training your future workforce If your business is looking to recruit, then we have a vast pool of work-ready people for you to tap in to. Working in partnership with employers and the Job Centre Plus, we design short and intensive, accredited pathways for local unemployed people, giving them the confidence and skills they need to fill local job vacancies. Our Inside Track programme trains local people for you to interview, trial or directly employ. We can provide you with a cost-effective recruitment process and support unemployed people get back into work. Community Learning brings together groups of adults, often of different ages and backgrounds, by helping them to pursue their interests. We aim to help local people develop new skills, address a need, become healthier or learn how better to support their children. We work closely with our partners, Claverham Community College and Education Futures Trust, in

meeting the needs of the community.

Meet our partners Claverham adult education Claverham Community College has been the main provider of adult education in Battle for over 20 years. We arrange courses for adults at the main college site and other venues in Battle and the surrounding villages. They are tailored to the needs of the learners, with courses ranging from oneday workshops to 30-week diplomas. Education Futures Trust As a charity, the Education Futures Trust aims to improve the life chances of all learners in Hastings and the surrounding area, primarily through education. If you’re undertaking an Access to HE Diploma and then go on to complete an HE qualification, the outstanding balance of your Advanced Learner Loan will be written off. You will have a very productive week when you will produce a selection of work in our ceramics studio.

Create a masterpiece you will want to hang on the wall. Learn techniques such as: scraping, sponging, waxing and masking, spattering, stippling, blushing and sanding, with guidance every step of the way.

During the 6-weeks you will be given instruction and guidance to make 2 bags using different designs and incorporating different methods of fastening. Please bring your own fabric. Although there will be some equipment available and a limited number of machines, more will be achieved during the time if you bring your own machining and personal sewing equipment (fabric scissors, tape measure, pins, sewing needles and thread to match your fabric). A knowledge of how your machine works is essential.

We will cover basic ceramic skills such as coiling, slab building and modelling, using these to produce a range of finished pieces. For students with little or no experience of jewellery making, an exciting introduction to the techniques used for adding texture and colour to jewellery.

The Prince’s Trust ‘Team’ Programme is a 12-week personal development course for young people (aged 16-25) who are not currently in full-time employment, education or training.

We know that it can be sometimes difficult to reconnect with education and training. We put together our Inclusive Pathways programme to support and build the confidence of those people who want to make a commitment to progress on to mainstream college courses and ultimately into employment.

This course gives students the opportunity to show their commitment and enthusiasm towards improving their maths, English and life skills. Students can participate in educational visits, work experience, taster sessions, and enrichment/social action activities. We will provide pastoral care, individual targets and teaching to meet their individual needs. On completion of this course you could continue on the pathways programme to improve maths and English. There is also the possibility of progression on to Apprenticeships, Traineeships, The Prince’s Trust, mainstream courses and workplacements in the college retail outlets.

Students gain CV writing, interview and employability skills and qualifications, and are given support and guidance in finding job opportunities, education or training. Students also get to go on an action-packed, residential week, participate in work experience and are given the chance to take part in community projects. Advanced Learner Loans help finance your course Do you want to study an accredited course? If you are worried about financing your education, you may be eligible for Advanced Learner Loan. These loans will cover the cost of your tuition fees and are government funded, for those who are 19 and over and want to enter education. The loan itself is really easy to apply for, and is not dependent on your income; therefore do not require credit checks. You may also be eligible for money from the 19+ Advanced Learning Loan Bursary Fund if you need help with your learning or living costs, for example, childcare or accommodation expenses. The remainder of your loan maybe written off if you go on to complete a degree.

You do not have to be in teaching or training to be able to do this course; it is an introduction to teaching & training for those who have a Level 3 qualification or equivalent and want to pass on those skills. This introductory qualification will prepare you to teach or train adults in the community, further education or voluntary sectors.

Please note: this is the FASTRACK version of this course. You will be in college the first 3 days (M,T,W) leaving two working days and the weekend to prepare your micro-teach. You will return on the following week to do your Micro-teach and then have a tutorial. There is then time for you to complete your assignments and hand them in 4 weeks later.
