PERSONALITY

Hilarious multi-award winning impressionist Bobby Davro is as much a part of the festive season as turkey and tinsel. Tim Saunders talks to him about pantos, camping and everything in between

he longstanding star of pantomime stars as Idle Jack in Dick Whittington in Southampton this Christmas. “As a family comedian, it is so wonderful seeing everyone from kids through to grandparents being entertained by you,” he says. Dick Whittington tells the story of Richard Whittington, a wealthy merchant and later Lord Mayor of London (between 1354 and 1423). The legend describes his rise from poverty-stricken childhood with the fortune he made through the sale of his cat to a rat-infested country. A regular visitor to the South Coast, Bobby recalled when he was 16 spending a week literally chasing women in Sussex. “I went to stay on a holiday camp with my friends, getting drunk and generally getting up to no good. I got so sunburnt that I

couldn’t put my shoes on, I couldn’t even smile!” Well-known on the panto circuit Bobby has played Buttons in Cinderella, Scarecrow in The Wizard of Oz and appeared in Jack and the Beanstalk as well as Robin Hood. He has twice starred as Wishee Washee in Aladdin, once with Melinda Messenger. Pantomimes are no longer reserved for Christmas; Bobby has helped turn them into Easter extravaganzas too. Last Easter he starred in Beauty and the Beast with CBBC actress Dani Harmer, known for her portrayal of Tracy Beaker. In 1981 Bobby made his television debut, but his

This led to his own Saturday night series Bobby Davro on the Box, Bobby’s Sketch Pad and TV Weekly, which topped the ratings for six consecutive years. At the height of his fame his weekly Saturday

night television shows attracted 10m viewers. In 1991 Bobby moved to the BBC and made three series, Public Enemy Number One, Rock With Laughter and Run the Risk. He returned to our screens in May 1997 as host of Winner Takes All for 65 programmes. Versatility seems to be the key to Bobby’s longevity, as a high profile personality he stated, “I want to go on TV to perform.” He continued, “I’m not conceited, but I am good at what I do. It’s just the vehicles are not there anymore. Too much comedy is filthy these days.” He recalled how an impression he made as a child resulted

traditional, family run jewellers, R&R Stevenson is well known for its in-depth knowledge and expertise in the trade with customers coming from all over Sussex and London to gain access to this. Owner Russell is a jeweller by profession and worked in London for 12 years before opening his shop with his wife on South Road in Haywards Heath. The extensive range of stunning jewellery on offer suits all tastes and budgets, from a simple pair of gold earrings to an intricate signet ring with precious gems made to the client’s own design – there is

truly something for everyone – male and female. It’s this array and variety combined with the shop’s traditional set-up that has kept R&R Stevenson on the map now for so long. Says Russell, “I love the fact that a customer can come in and buy a small charm for £10 but can also speak to us about a unique and bespoke design with unusual stones if they want to. And they frequently do! Our knowledgeable and friendly

We understand that jewellery is a special and emotive thing for people approach means we are happy to discuss their ideas and try to meet their needs. We understand that jewellery is a special and emotive thing for people and for all kinds of occasions, so we want them to feel that with us they are in safe hands.” So what’s popular right now according to Russell? “Good quality coloured gems are very much in demand at the moment.”

The shop stocks two main brands of watches, Michel Herbelin and Citizen – a perfect and lasting Christmas gift. As well as jewellery and watches, R&R Stevenson also sells a wide range of clocks, from quartz alarm through to imposing grandfather clocks, as well as silverware, cut glass, precious metal model animals and bronze figurines. They also offer a full jewellery, watch and clock repair service, as well as valuations for probate and insurance purposes. The shop itself is well located on Haywards Heath’s main High Street and has off street parking. The shop frontage displays a beautiful array of gold and silver jewellery and glittering gems. As Russell explains, “I always say to people to actually come into the shop and talk to us, rather than just look in the window as there’s so much more to see inside.” Sometimes that will include watching Russell at work at his desk inspecting precious stones and metals. has helped him tackle it by tapping acupressure points with his fingers. Bobby appeared on In Therapy where he spoke to therapist Mandy Saligari about divorce, family issues and struggling with alcohol. “The measure of success is happiness and peace of mind,” he says. His father, Bill Nankeville, was a runner; a British national mile and 1500m champion, world-record holder who represented Great Britain in two Olympic Games. Bobby even followed his father in a similiar vein, in 2003 he was one of the contestants in the reality TV show The Games, in which 10 celebrities

competed against each other in Olympic style events. He is very involved in charity fundraising, including for Kids ‘n’ Cancer, Care After Combat and Variety, and on December 10 2018, Bobby appears alongside Jim Davidson and Jethro in Legends to raise funds for Care After Combat. Bobby also helped launch a new charity bingo game to raise funds for Variety. The funds raised from the new charity game boost the pledge made by The Bingo Association to raise £1m for Variety by the end of 2018. These funds are used to provide support to even more children through Sunshine Coaches, powered

and sports wheelchairs, specialist and sensory equipment as well as funding a number of memorable days and outings for disabled and disadvantaged children across the UK. Bobby said: “As a long-standing supporter of Variety, the children’s charity, I am delighted to help launch a new fundraising initiative that aims to raise £250,000 for Variety. I know what a difference these funds will make to the lives of children and young people throughout the UK.” Born in Ashford, Surrey on September 13, 1959, Bobby likes the music of

Gilbert O’Sullivan. “I have played your new album constantly over the past few weeks,” he tweeted to Gilbert. “I believe it to be one of your finest to date. Full of wonderful songs that are written and produced in a style that reminds me of your early songs. First class and its success is everything you deserve.” Bobby continues to keep a busy schedule, as well as television appearances he is in demand on cruise ships and relaxes by playing golf. Bobby has just filmed Celebrities Go Camping which will be aired in the New Year. Bobby is accompanied by four other famous faces: Michelle Collins, Cheryl Baker, Joe Swash and Stephen Bailey who pack up their celebrity lifestyles to go camping on The Jurassic Coast. In five episodes, they all get up close and personal with the great outdoors, exploring campsites, from basic fields with compost loos to glorious glamping. BLOOMSBURY IN

BERWICK

Tucked away at the foot of the South Downs is a small church illuminated with murals from the residents of Charleston. Robert Veitch investigates

R

everend Peter Blee is a quietly spoken, thoughtful man who appears to be at one with his environment. His church, St Michaels and All Angels in Berwick lies atop a tiny hill at the end of a flint walled passageway. It’s over 900 years old and Grade I listed. To wander around the churchyard is to amble peacefully through history. At the outbreak of World War II, the church interior was typical of the time, namely whitewashed walls and stone. Decorating church interiors with art works had become largely forgotten after The Reformation. It was Bishop Bell of Chichester who commissioned the artists, Duncan Grant, Vanessa Bell and Quentin Bell in 1941. As members of the Bloomsbury Set, the American Dorothy Parker remarked, “They lived in squares, painted in circles and loved in triangles.” Though viewed as ‘avante garde’ their Berwick work would be traditional, a ‘decorative scheme’ creating an environment rather than a series of paintings. The art reflects the local landscape, people, and a way of life under threat at the time. Vanessa Bell, the sister of Virgina Woolf noted, “What a wartime occupation, it needed Hitler to bring such things to pass.” The plasterboard appears to be

standard 8x4 sheets, but their origin remains unknown. Peter told me painting took place at Charleston, after which the boards were brought to Berwick and secured to wallmounted battens. Look closely and plasterboard nails can still be seen. During the War, several leaded glass windows were destroyed by a bomb, which detonated nearby. Replaced with clear plate glass, it adds a charming other-worldliness to the place.

They lived in squares, painted in circles and loved in triangles Two seasonal works stand out. Vanessa Bell’s, ‘The Annunciation’ – the meeting between angel Gabriel and the Virgin Mary, featured her daughter posing as Mary. On the opposite wall is ‘The Nativity’, also by Vanessa Bell. It was painted after Virginia Woolf had taken that fateful walk into the River Ouse and her brother Julian had been killed in the Spanish Civil War. Mary appears lost in her thoughts. In the background is Mount Caburn.

To secure the art for future generations, the church interior requires a stable environment. The plan is to install roof insulation and sustainable under floor heating utilising boreholes. “Humidity control is key to controlling the environment and avoiding fluctuations,” according to Peter. A failure to restore the paintings will see them deteriorate beyond recognition; even today flaking paint is clearly visible, highlighting the thin line between art and extinction. Peter indicated wax and varnish from preservation attempts in the 1960s needs removing because it’s proved more harmful than helpful. Salt eruptions in the paint exist, whilst evidence of mould and dirt need eliminating. December 2018 | SUSSEX LIVING 15

22/11/2018 12:24

Peter is keen to publicise the fundraising plans for the ‘Saving Berwick Project.’ A National Lottery application is now in it’s second phase. If the £600,000 grant is approved the church will still need to raise £250,000 themselves… of which a heart warming £100,000 has already been donated. Preservation works will be in situ, on scaffolding platforms, which might make the Sunday Service unique for the congregation. The church has around 10,000 visitors each year. “Our conservation project will invite small groups of vulnerable and disadvantaged individuals to enjoy this quiet and reflective place,” Peter revealed.

Flaking paint is clearly visible, highlighting the thin line between art and extinction “Schools and universities will also be welcomed, as will the artistic community.” Peter Blee became Rector of St Michaels and All Angels in 2003. He was born a Sussex boy, left for a while, but has “come home now.” His book ‘The Bloomsbury Group in Berwick Church’ “took a few years to write,” but is part of the fundraising project. The Bloomsbury link will continue, as Quentin Bell’s son, the Lewes based

Julian, has been commissioned to decorate the Reredo behind the altar. St Michaels and All Angels is a quiet, enchanting place and at its heart is the constant calm serenity of Reverend Peter Blee. l St Michael and All Angels is open daily www.berwickchurch.org.uk peter.blee@berwickchurch.org.uk

It’s a Dog’s Life Rolo the Border Terrier is in full Christmas swing this December and waiting in anticipation for Santa Paws

W

hilst dogs generally have a different perspective to people, we’re nearer the ground, what can I tell you, I have to say that I like Christmas. Whilst ‘Her Indoors’ gets preoccupied and starts rushing round with lists, and ‘Him Indoors’ hides in the study muttering about the cost, there are some seasonal delights, like the re-emergence of home baking, for a dog to enjoy. ‘Her Indoors’ is a bit of a messy cook so there are floor cleaning duties with some festive flavours for me and my apprentice, Teddy. There’re also parcel deliveries to bark at. I can’t hear the doorbell these days, due to senior deafness, but Teds can, so I join in. It’s all good fun. There is also the return of the Juniors to the family home which is always good for a bit of tummy tickling and fussing, plus there’s the muchanticipated visit of Santa Paws. I used to worry that I’d get missed out, as I’m not generally a very good dog, but he’s

been coming for the last sixteen years so I’m not so concerned these days. I hope he realises I’ve got an apprentice as I don’t want to have to share. And without letting the dog out of the bag, if you’ve ever wondered how the old fella gets past the canine home guard, it’s got a lot to do with biscuits! Christmas, however, isn’t always a good time for dogs. Puppies are sometimes bought as Christmas presents, and then, when the novelty wears off in the cold light of January, and the reality of incontinence, chewing, training, walking and needlesharp puppy teeth, finally dawns, they end up in rescue centres. Last year, I heard that in the run up to Christmas there is an increase in elderly dogs given up to make

way for a cute puppy. Now I’m all in favour of cuteness, after all, I’m pretty blessed in that department myself, but a dog who has given the best years of their life to their family deserves a comfortable old age in a bed by the fire with loving owners in my book. This year will be the first Christmas that Teddy has been with us so I’ll have to set him a suitable example. He needs to know that the indoor tree isn’t for weeing on, premature opening of presents is frowned upon, crackers aren’t fireworks in disguise, parcel ribbon isn’t edible and sprouts are best avoided if he wants to be allowed in the lounge later. It’s pretty similar for people too, so go easy on the unsuitable eating and drinking or you could find yourself in trouble with the presents and embarrassing yourself with the Christmas tree! Have a great time! l

This is what our clients say about their experience with Jo... “Sadly, our 2 beautiful, 10 year old Slovakian rough haired pointers became gravely ill within months of each other and, Suzen and then Jo were there to help us on the saddest of days. Suzen had been so amazingly compassionate and kind with Merlin that I was a little worried when she wasn’t available for Roulis. There was no need to worry, at all. Both vets could not have been more empathetic or professional which I believe some vets find a tricky combination. They were the worst days but made so much more bearable by such devoted and compassionate vets. The fact that they bring a bed and a blanket is so incredibly thoughtful, and they helped our children and indeed our young puppy to cope with our last gift to our devoted boys”. BLOOMING TIMES

Snow SENTINELS From ancient talismanic figures to sparkly Christmas decorations, snowmen have always been with us. Flo Whitaker takes us on a journey back in time

W

hat does the word ‘snowman’ mean to you? Do you build them with your children or grandchildren? At Christmas, do you hang a snowman decoration on your tree, or place an illuminated snowman figure in your garden? Nowadays we associate snowmen with light-hearted fun but their origins lie elsewhere. Snowmen have been a part of our culture for thousands of years. The oldest surviving art in Europe can be found in cave paintings dating back to 35,000 BC. Ancient tools and cooking vessels give us more clues about this faraway world. Carved figures of humans and animals indicate early belief systems and rituals. These tantalising fragments can be viewed in museums, but a snowman is ephemeral. It leaves nothing behind, save for a puddle and a written or spoken history trail passed along the generations.

Our ancestors were highly attuned to the seasons. Winter, with its short hours of daylight, was a particular challenge. In a landscape populated with bears and wolves, great importance was placed on talismanic objects. Snowmen were first created as guardians and were constructed around the perimeter of the homestead to protect people and livestock. Made with outstretched, defensive twiggy arms, they were positioned with their backs facing the settlement. Their grotesque faces looked outwards in order to scare away animals and bad spirits lurking in the dangerous Wildwood.

A snowman is ephemeral. It leaves nothing behind, save for a puddle and a history trail passed along the generations The earliest known snowman image appears in an illuminated book, (circa 1380) held in the National Library of the Netherlands. In 1494, the 19-yearold Michelangelo was commissioned by Piero de’ Medici to build a snowman in his palace courtyard in Florence. From the Middle Ages, snow figures were constructed to honour

favoured monarchs and military heroes, or to create religious effigies. Unlike costly artist’s materials, snow is freely available and snow figures were also made to show dissent. Unpopular politicians, landowners and churchmen were lampooned in snow sculptures. Ordinary folk would vent their anger by kicking and punching the figures and, when gunpowder arrived on the scene, blowing them up! In Zurich, a springtime festival still occurs, whereby a snowman, (now made from fabric) is exploded to symbolise the end of winter. Our ancient ancestors would be mystified by us, but might see something of themselves in our shared ‘worshipping’ of snow deities. So, if you receive a Christmas card depicting a jolly snowman, pause for thought. That image of an icy winter sentinel has travelled through the ages. Snowmen are mysterious and transient. Commanded by the weather, they come – and they go. They are the stuff of dangerous politics, but are also a child’s plaything. They can be pro-establishment, or anarchic; religious or profane. They are shapeshifting, inscrutable time-travellers. If only they could talk – what stories they could tell. l

RUSHFIELDS Thanks to a brand new extension, Rushfields Farm Shop is gearing up to celebrate its best Christmas yet. Hanna Prince paid them a visit to see the exciting new developments for herself

Rising

shop added eight years ago. Food now accounts for around half of all sales, with home-produced pies and savoury goods an emerging speciality.

Perfect pies

T

here’s an aura of festive excitement around Rushfields Farm Shop. Scrumptiously sweet Christmas treats fill the shelves and the Plant Centre next door is stocking up on live Christmas trees. The wholesome scent of homemade pies wafts from the new, fairylight-hung extension and hangs in the cold air. On the day of my visit, the extension has only just opened to the public. It’s a stunning space – oakframed with high ceilings and a spacious kitchen out the back where professional chefs are crafting baked goods from locally-sourced ingredients. Mountains of fresh produce in rustic crates fill every corner with colour. “We were running out of room,” explains Rushfields’ co-founder Colin Langridge, when I meet him for tea in the airy Plant Centre café. “We needed a larger area to stock fresh, chilled and frozen goods, not to mention producing our own award-winning pies.” Colin established Rushfields with his sister in 1984. What began as a small nursery and smallholding has since grown exponentially, with a café opened in the late 1990s and the farm

It’s easy to see why Rushfields’ pies have proved so popular. The Farm Shop’s display of baked goods – each crust cooked to golden perfection – looks mouth-wateringly delicious. The awards displayed proudly in the new extension make it clear that they taste just as good as they look. “Three years ago we were supreme champion at the British Pie Awards with our steak and kidney pie,” says Colin. “Then our steak, ale and stilton won supreme champion at a pie competition in Birmingham this spring. The steak and kidney also got two stars this year in the Great Taste Awards, which shows we’re doing the right things.” Customers who have tasted the pies, he tells me, tend to return time and time again. There has also been an increase in demand from pie-lovers looking for a hot snack at lunchtime or on their way to work, which is why the extension will boast a dedicated hot takeaway pie and savoury section. Every pie will be made from locallysourced meat products and baked on site by chefs in the new kitchen behind the shop. Three new members of staff – including a pie chef - have already been taken on to help deliver the new service, boosting employment in the local community.

Our steak, ale and stilton won supreme champion at a pie competition this spring

“The extension was partly funded with money from the EU’s Rural Development Programme for England, which helps support the growth of rural businesses and rural economies,” explains co-director Adrian. “Creating jobs is the biggest aim of the programme, and that’s what we’re doing here.”

Keeping it local

Employing local people is just part of Rushfields’ ethos. The Farm Shop also stocks locally-sourced produce wherever possible, with over 50 small suppliers represented on the shelves. Local farmers contribute everything from fresh fruit and veg to the beef and lamb in those famous pies, while seasonal berries are grown in the on-site nursery. “That’s what we’re all about and it’s what makes us successful and different,” explains Colin. “You read stories about supermarket chains losing custom, but last month we had an 11 per cent rise in food sales. We may be small, but the people who shop here like to know where their goods are coming from. All our food is traceable – and shoppers are beginning to care about that more and more.” The same ethos extends to the Plant Centre café, where most of the dishes sold are based on ingredients from the farm shop. Sausages are made at the on-site butchers, pies are all baked in-house, and cakes and pastries come from local suppliers. On ‘fish Fridays’, the fish is fresh from the boats at Shoreham. Add a stunning, high-ceilinged dining area with rustic, flower-bedecked tables and industrialstyle lighting, and it’s immediately obvious that this is no typical garden centre café.

Christmas is coming

At the time of my visit, the Café, Plant Centre and Farm Shop are all gearing up for the Christmas season. Fairy lights and hanging stars glitter on the ceilings, the menus are packed with warming festive favourites and the shelves overflow with gifts galore. Browsing the farm shop, I find luxury chocolate Santas, endless edible stocking fillers, perfect cheeseboard

staples and cold meats for deli selections. “We also do turkeys of course,” says Colin. “Although there has been a slight decline in their popularity – people seem to be opting for beef instead. We only take orders until 12th December, so it’s a good idea to get in there early.” Customers stocking up on festive food at the farm shop should also take a look in at the Plant Centre, which does a lively trade in both real and artificial Christmas trees at this time of year. There are endless gifts on offer too, from wooden children’s toys to stocking fillers for all the family. Many of the customers I see browsing these festive selections are in-the-know regulars. Colin grins greetings to several of them as we pass, and I wonder if I’ve stumbled on the reason for Rushfields’ success. Because despite the expansion, it still remains a friendly, family-run affair with Colin, his sister and their spouses at the helm. One thing’s for certain - I know where I’ll be doing my Christmas shopping this year. l Rushfields Henfield Road, Poynings, West Sussex BN45 7AY 01273 857455 adrian@rushfields.com www.rushfields.com December 2018 | SUSSEX LIVING 23

CHRISTMAS

Hail, Hail THE EVERGREEN!

As we get ready for Christmas, sending cards and decorating our homes, we are continuing a tradition that stretches back thousands of years, writes Flo Whitaker

I

n his 1598 ‘Survay of London’, historian John Stow recorded the following scene; “A standard of tree being set up in the midst of the pavement in the neighbourhood of Cornhill, fast in the ground, nailed full of holme, (evergreen oak) and ivie for the disport of Christmas to the people.” Stow was a methodical, well-respected scholar who quoted a 14th century manuscript as his source material for the tale, showing that the idea of a communal Christmas tree is an extremely old one. Trees have provided a focal point for us since the earliest times. We gather around them to worship, to celebrate – and to protest. It’s easy to understand how the cult of ‘evergreens’ began. Living in the Northern hemisphere, plants that miraculously remained green during winter had a special significance for our ancestors, but although evergreens have long been used to decorate our homes, the idea of bringing an entire tree indoors is relatively new to the British Isles. Scandinavian and Germanic countries have been doing it for centuries, however. The poet, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, visiting Germany in 1798, wrote an account of an ancient Christmas Eve tradition whereby whole fir trees and yew branches were bought indoors and decorated with

paper flowers and candles – (with scant regard for Health and Safety!) In December 1800, Queen Charlotte’s guests at Windsor were astonished by the sight of a large illuminated indoor fir tree. This enchanting spectacle set a fashion trend for the gentry. In 1807, The Duke of Portland ordered, “a decorated tree to be set up for a juvenile party.” In 1848, an engraving in the Illustrated London News showed Queen Victoria, Prince Albert and the royal children gathered around an ornate Christmas tree. We’ve been dragging in trees and re-arranging the furniture ever since.

In 1843, the first commercially produced Christmas cards were designed and sent by Henry Cole, (who went on to found the Victoria and Albert Museum – and do much else besides). Henry was a busy man, so a decorated card that only required a brief hand-written greeting was clearly far quicker to write than a letter. His associates were delighted by this novelty – they copied Henry’s idea and sent cards to all their friends. The modestly priced Penny Black stamp had conveniently been introduced three years earlier – an example of how one invention can unwittingly fuel another. Early Christmas cards contained messages, reminding the recipient to be charitable towards the poor and were often decorated with springtime flowers, reinforcing the positive dual message; ‘Christ is Born!’ – Spring is Coming!’ Victorian society well understood the ancient Language of Flowers. Catkins represented motherhood and new life, snowdrops suggested purity and hope, ivy was for endurance and fidelity, winter jasmine for grace, violets for modesty and the ‘Heartsease’ pansy with its three-colour flowers represented The Holy Trinity. Much of this visual language is now lost to us – our modern eyes would merely assume they were just pretty notelets with no obvious significance. Medieval art abounds with botanical imagery. Holly represents the crown of thorns and the blood of Christ, rosemary indicates remembrance, bay leaves shout in glorious triumph, while lily of the valley quietly whispers humility.

The Virgin Mary is associated with many flowers, but the rose is her prime symbol and accompanies her image, regardless of the season. A wintery Marian rose may be frost-covered, but still in bloom – a reference to everlasting life. Hellebores, commonly known as ‘Christmas Roses’ are not roses at all and often don’t flower ‘til February, but we shouldn’t let mere facts get in the way of a charming name. Hellebores are related to buttercups. In the language of flowers they spell ‘scandal’ – an odd choice for a Christmas card?! In Mexico, they decorate their homes with the ‘Christmas Night Flower’. We know it as poinsettia, named after Joel Poinsett, an amateur botanist and the USA’s first ambassador to Mexico who, in 1825, sent cuttings back to his South Carolina home. In America, a popular name for poinsettia is ‘Star of Bethlehem’. Many old religious practises and beliefs were absorbed into Christian worship, but mistletoe has always been an outsider. With its strong association to Druidic culture, magical mistletoe is an awkward character. In olden times it was thought that the physical shape of a plant was an indication of its attributes. In this respect, mistletoe was twice condemned. Not only did it have dodgy, pagan connections; its arrangement of foliage and berries were said to be a visual representation of male genitalia. Known as ‘The Devil’s Seed’, it was also thought to repel witches and lightning. Mistletoe was clearly dangerous stuff, but, by the 1400s, it was having something of an image makeover. Scholars referred to mistletoe’s ‘purity’ and ‘virginity’ because it grew

suspended in air, away from the corruption and mire of earthbound things. Mistletoe’s luminous white berries became known as ‘Mary’s Tears’, but it was still excluded from churches – although there is one notable exception. Yorkshire folk have a long and noble history of dissent, so it’s probably no surprise to learn that York Minster didn’t banish mistletoe. On the contrary, for hundreds of years they honoured it with a special mistletoe service. Nowadays, mistletoe is bought into the Minster on Christmas Eve. It is blessed, then hung by the high altar and remains there throughout Christmas, so that all may see this ancient symbol of peace and friendship. l

A Rustic SCANDI Christmas Decked out in a rustic Scandi style, Phil and Philippa Heath’s stone cottage in the Derbyshire countryside is a haven of understated Christmas charm

I

In an old stone cottage, nestled amongst thick woodland on the edge of the Peak District, lives the Heath family who start preparing for Christmas on the first day of December every year. “We absolutely love Christmas,” says Philippa, mum of the family. “Phil and I got married in December, and my birthday’s the week before Christmas, so it’s a very special time for our family. As soon as daylight appears, Phil and one of the boys head out to pick a tree, and twigs and branches that I make into decorations such as heart shapes, stars or reindeer that I then paint white.” The couple’s children, Jack, Tom, Joe and Bess, also love to make bits and bobs from spare timber. No room is left unadorned and this warm home is transformed into a rustic winter wonderland ready to celebrate the season. The interior of the Heath’s home is just as inventively decorated the rest of the year. With little spare cash, Phil

lick of paint. “It was in a dreadful state,” recalls Philippa, who had spent three years travelling around the world with Phil, a former merchant navy seaman. “We both grew up and have family near here, so when we were ready to settle in the UK to start our own family, we focused our search on the local Derbyshire area.” Although the 1800s structure they found was damp and neglected, the setting was magical and immediately won them over. “Money was tight after paying for the house from our savings,” says Philippa, “and we had little left to pay for workmen so we had a go at most of the immediate repair work ourselves.” Whilst they were doing the repairs they knocked two of the three small bedrooms into one to make a decent master. 32 SUSSEX LIVING | December 2018

Since that initial renovation, the couple have gradually transformed the house as funds could be resaved and in between the arrival of each of the four children. The most dramatic change to the house was the two-storey extension, built by Phil in 2000 using reclaimed punched face stone to match the original cottage; this gave the family a larger kitchen diner and a spacious third bedroom above. As the boys have grown up, this bedroom has since been divided into two, bringing the total number of bedrooms up to four. “Jack needed his own space as he got older,” says Philippa. “At the same time, Bess said she didn’t want to feel completely separate from the family so asked if we would take out a wall in her room so she could see down Open shelves and attractive storage work well in an open plan space. The most dramatic change to the house was the two-storey extension, built by Phil in 2000 over the stairs and into the kitchen. She may change her mind and want more privacy when she becomes a teenager herself though.” As well as all that structural work the house has had its floorboards stripped upstairs and salvaged flooring laid downstairs; all the rooms have been replastered and the electrics and plumbing have been updated. Phil only called in the professionals for the latter two tasks, while he and Philippa have managed the rest and the decorating themselves. Understandably, having lived there for 21 years, the house has been redecorated a number of times. Philippa has recently moved away from chintzy cottage style to a cooler, more sophisticated Scandinavian feel. “Living in the countryside, with ducks and chickens, dogs, boots and wellies means we are never clean and tidy. But the lightness and brightness of Scandinavian style gives the illusion of cleanliness at least!”

Visitors to this home can be certain it will look a little different each time they stop by, such is the way this family and their home continually evolve, and there is always another job or two on the wish list. “I like the idea of a fireplace in our bedroom,” says Philippa, “and there is a chimney we could open up; a picture window would give us a nice view of the woods from our bed too. Those are just dreams, though, more urgently we need to tackle the house roof, and the verandah, which needs

maintenance to make it waterproof, and the garage needs to be made mouse proof… We love our home, but that’s the reality of rural life I’m afraid, most of the time it’s not all that magical and romantic.” What will be magical are the festivities ahead. They have a large clan, so each Christmas they take turns to host around 20 family members, including eight youngsters. “It will be noisy and chaotic, but Phil and I look forward to time with the children and recapturing all those early days of sheer excitement and anticipation. I don’t think we’d ever forget to put a mince pie out for Santa and a carrot for Rudolph.” The children have their rituals too: they make a Christmas box filling it with their favourite decorations, uneaten gold coins and a letter to themselves for the following year. “It’s amazing for them to open up the box and read their letters to see just how they and life have changed in 12 months,” says Philippa. The house may be beautiful, the setting may be idyllic, but for the Heaths, it’s who they share time with that’s the most important thing at Christmas, and all year round. And that’s the magic of this lovely family. l Photography Brent Darby/Narratives Text and styling Naomi Jones/Narratives

Your Community Needs You

West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service is launching a new drive to increase its number of on-call firefighters. With numbers declining, the fire service is looking to reverse this with a new call to action of ‘Your Community Needs You’. The service relies on on-call crews to be available to react in their local areas. Fourteen of West Sussex’s 25 fire stations are crewed solely by an on-call workforce. Debbie Kennard, West Sussex County Council Cabinet Member for Safer, Stronger Communities, said, “On-call firefighters can come from every walk of life, including builders, plumbers, farmers, office staff, together with people who are not currently employed. Previous experience is not required thanks to the comprehensive training programme.” On-call firefighters carry out the same role as a wholetime firefighter including fires, road traffic collisions, flooding incidents or raising fire safety awareness in the community. There are nine West Sussex fire stations in most urgent need of new recruits. To find out more about becoming an on-call firefighter visit westsussex.gov. uk or follow West Sussex Fire & Rescue on Facebook and Twitter.

Boxing Day Mumming

Chanctonbury Ring Morris Men will be

dancing and performing the popular Mumming play at a new venue in Steyning at 12.30pm on Boxing Day. This is a return to their roots, as the annual Mumming Play is actually called ‘the Steyning Tipteers play’ performed in the 1950s and 60s. ‘Tipteering’ is the Sussex term for what is generally known elsewhere as ‘Mumming’. Each locality had its own play, Tipteering gangs travelled around their local area, performing the play at houses and pubs in exchange for beer, food and coins! The text was first published in the Folk-Lore Journal (Vol 2, no 1) in 1884, in an article by the Brighton based Victorian historian Fred Sawyer. Since 1956, Chancs have become the custodians of this play, and perform it each year on Boxing Day. See more about what Morris Dancing is on YouTube- search on Chanctonbury Ring Morris Men. Raising Funds for Change

A Sussex charity is celebrating its fifth birthday with an ambitious project to give Tanzanian pupils the best start in their education. Champion Chanzige has raised £50,000 for primary schools in the east of the African country. Founder Philippa Jacobs was driven to make a difference

after visiting primary schools in Tanzania. The charity’s fundraising includes an annual quiz night, a camping weekend, art shows and garden parties. Every penny raised goes directly to the schools. Champion Chanzige’s latest project is building and equipping new classrooms for pre-primary. “We want to help more children go to high school by improving their education from an early age, developing teachers and providing resources. Our longer-term plan is to move this right through the schools.” To support Champion Chanzige email championchanzige@gmail.com, or call Philippa on 07803 134919.

Audition for Ditchling Players

Our spring production, which we hope will be How the Other Half Loves by Alan Ayckbourn will be on 15th–18th May and we will be holding auditions on Monday 7th January 2019 in Ditchling Village Hall at 8:00pm. The play is a farce following the consequences of an adulterous affair between a married man and his boss’s wife and their attempts to cover their tracks by roping in a third couple to be their alibi. We look forward to seeing you at the audition, whether it’s for one of the roles or to help, in whatever capacity, back stage. If you’d like more information contact the director, Penelope Bennett on pellyjane@ hotmail.com.

lthough Crawley is best known as a New Town, designated in 1947 and chosen as a location for people and industry to relocate from London, its origins reach back well over 2,000 years. In 600BC somebody placed a bronze sword in the Polesfleet Stream in Langley Green where it remained until excavated in the 50s. Whether this was an offering to an ancient god we will never really know, but people have inhabited the area since the Stone

in 1848 the railway reached Crawley and it began to expand. At the start of the 1900s the town had a piped water supply and soon had an electricity generating station. With the railways came commuters, including Mark Lemon, the founder editor of both Punch and The Field magazines, who was friends with John Leech, a former medical student who found his niche drawing cartoons for the magazine. A Christmas Carol for Charles Dickens in 1843 and his humour shone through in the expressive faces of Scrooge and the ghost of Jacob Marley. Incidentally, it was through Leech’s illustrations that the idea of not working over Christmas was cemented in the public psyche, which led to the Bank Holidays Act 1871. Leech lived at Tree House in the High Street, better known as The Tree when he was a student; this building now houses Crawley Museum which made its move from a small building in Goffs Park House earlier this year. The Tree received its distinctive name in commemoration of the ancient ‘Crawley Elm’ which once stood opposite. It was described in a 19th century book as having, “a tall, straight stem which ascends to a height of 70 feet” and “fantastic ruggedness of its roots.” At that time its trunk had been partly hollowed out to form a small room variously used as a billet, a temporary lodge and a meeting room. The room had a circumference of about 35 feet, a door and some brickwork. Although dying at this stage, parts remained until the New Town was developed in the 1940s. The museum received substantial grants from the Heritage Lottery Fund and Crawley Borough Council and houses photos of works by Leech among its exhibits. The New Year will see an exhibition by Worth Park History Group which will feature unusual and interesting archaeological objects discovered there by enthusiasts. Despite being a large town, Crawley has a wealth of green spaces within and around it; Worth Park has recently joined Goffs Park and Memorial Gardens in receiving Green Flag status, an award for the highest possible environmental standards, maintenance and visitor facilities. Thanks to a large Heritage Lottery funded grant, the park has been restored to its former glory and boasts formal gardens, a beautiful fountain, a wooded lake, croquet lawns and a tennis court. The magnificent and expansive Tilgate Park has received the Green Flag Award since 2002 and is one of the South East’s most popular natural leisure destinations. Various habitats compose the park; broad leaf woodland with trees such as oak and birch attract all three British species of woodpecker, Roe deer and invertebrates. Heathland is a priority habitat in the park, comprising of open land with gorse and wild heather which supports rare specialist birds, reptiles and amphibians. The lakes and ponds provide breeding sites for frogs, toads, newts and dragonflies and birds such as coots, moorhens and grebes grace the

that is 125 feet wide. A self-guided tree trail can take visitors around a dozen of the most memorable trees in the park. During my visit to Crawley I spent an afternoon being shown around the superb Tilgate Nature Centre by Simon Woodard and had the chance to get close to animals I had only encountered in photographs and on film. The five acre centre has been running since the mid 1960s and has recently developed a large Americasthemed zone housing a colourful flock of macaws and the capybara, the world’s largest rodent. Simon introduced me to Alf, a two-and-a-half-year-old lowland tapir, a species which lives in the South American forests. Alf would have been born with spots and stripes as camouflage against predators but now Two potoroo

people due to its evolution on islands with a lack of predators. Easily the most arresting encounter was a large Hungarian pig, or mangalitza, called Boris, covered in coarse hair and possessing a pair of deadly looking tusks. With a huge wrinkled face and powerful body, Boris was described as ‘a handful’ by Simon; we fed him a pumpkin and watched from behind a fence as he swiftly demolished it in several mouthfuls. The final animals I met were a lively mob of 20 meerkats. Within moments, they were exploring my notebook and bag while one jumped

on my head to get a better view of the surroundings. Utterly relaxed in human company, they are the ultimate children’s delight and happily allow themselves to be stroked before jumping to attention in the classic upright pose on both hind legs, faces alert for danger from above. Crawley certainly turned out to be a town of surprises; there is a wealth of vibrant diversity here and a proud sense of community born from its long and varied history as an important part of the Sussex Weald. l www.crawley.gov.uk

sports his adult plain brown coat; his prehensile nose is agile enough to wind around stems and long enough to act as a snorkel when he has to take to the water. The capybara was more reticent than Alf and stayed at a safe distance while a South American ostrich called the Rhea stalked about inquisitively. Simon told me that the male carries out the incubation and chick rearing by himself, a rarity in the animal kingdom. Further on, I met Terry the 28-year-old raven, a hand-reared bird who enjoys reacting to visitors and uttering the occasional word. I was surprised to learn that ravens can live to 40 years old and seeing one at arm’s length was an unforgettable experience. We stopped at an enclosure to view the emus; the females make a loud drumming noise in their throats and the males again take on sole parental duty once the chicks are born. The kookaburras are unusual in that their chicks help to raise next year’s brood, an adaptation that means they can defend a larger territory. Shaped rather like a large kingfisher, the birds feed on small mammals and fish, stunning their prey on a branch or stone. One of the most unusual animals was a member of the kangaroo family, the long nosed potoroo that carries its joey in a pouch and is unafraid of

Guinea Fowl SERVES

A bird is traditionally the one must-have for the Christmas table, for a bit of variety why not try roast guinea fowl with oyster mushrooms? Sherry and mushrooms are a good combination, worthy of any celebratory meal making it a festive feast with a delicious twist, and lots of sherry! INGREDIENTS 2 small guinea fowl 2 tbsp olive oil 2 medium onions 4 cloves garlic, lightly crushed Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper 500g oyster mushrooms, cleaned 2 tsp rosemary, finely chopped 80-100g Serrano ham 100ml fino sherry METHOD Preheat oven to 220c/425f/ gas mark 7.

62 SUSSEX LIVING | December 2018

Rub two tablespoons of olive oil over 2 the guinea fowl and place in a lightly oiled roasting tray. Cut one onion into

wedges and put them in each cavity with the garlic. Season the birds. Place in the oven and roast for 45 minutes to one hour. After about 40 minutes test the leg using a skewer. If the juices run clear, the guinea fowl is cooked; if they are still pink, it will require more cooking. When cooked, transfer the guinea fowl to a board and leave to rest for 10 minutes, loosely covered with foil. Meanwhile, cook the mushrooms. Place the roasting tin on the hob and heat the oil. Add mushrooms, one

chopped onion, garlic and any juices from the cavity of the guinea fowl, the rosemary, half the Serrano ham torn into small strips, and fry for two to four minutes until the mushrooms are almost cooked. Add the sherry and let it simmer for a minute. Check seasoning; if too strong, add a splash of water. Serve half a guinea fowl per person with the remaining Serrano ham on top and the mushrooms with gravy on the side. l

floor. Do your nails in advance to avoid smudges and have a couple of outfit options at the ready to overcome last minute fluster. FAST BEAUTY Time is precious at Christmas and you don’t want to be pampering for hours, so look good, fast! Keep makeup to a minimum; this means there is less to go wrong through the day or night. Always wear primer for a longer lasting look and remember powders last longer than creams. Choose matt lips for staying power and waterproof mascara for panda-free eyes. If you like bouncy tresses sleep in a plait or rollers instead of curling on the day, or for ultimate ease scoop your hair into a high pony or messy bun – I love a ‘done’ face and ‘undone’ hair combo. SHINE ON For quick brightening fixes through the day or night keep eye drops at the ready to banish red, tired peepers, and a dewy-look facial spray or makeup fixer will lift and refresh your look. A spritz of your favourite perfume is a great pick me up too. Sort out lank or frizzy barnets with a quick spray of hairspray and a scrunch, and for a trusted super easy Christmas fix just add glitter! Eyes, cheeks, nails, lips, jumper, whatever goes. Remember to get some shut eye between the celebrations and you will be a shining star this Christmas. l

BOOK REVIEW

Elizabeth Kay offers Sussex Living readers her thoughts on recent reads that have caught her attention. She gives her views on a selection of books from different genres which may capture your interest

WEEDS IN THE HEART

by Nathaniel Hughes and Fiona Owen (Quintessence Press) This rather uninspiring title is a pity, because the book itself is absolutely beautiful and would make a wonderful Christmas present. The illustrations are accurate, informative and exquisite, and make this a coffee table book to leaf through at your leisure. It deals with the medicinal and spiritual aspects of the plants found in the Stroud Valley, and although it is very clear that it is not a medical textbook, it does include scientific elements as well as meditative ones. The opening of the preface sums

The illustrations are accurate, informative and exquisite it up very well: This book is the opposite of an encyclopaedia. It focuses on a relatively small number of uses for a small number of herbs from a highly subjective viewpoint. There are genuine case studies, both from the point of view of the person experiencing the treatment and the herbalist prescribing it, with plenty of references if you want to pursue a particular topic further. Hughes describes himself as an AnimistBuddhist, believing that consciousness can be found throughout nature. Even if you don’t agree with much of the philosophy behind the book, it is still a worthwhile read as many old-fashioned remedies are revisited.

THE TROUBLE WITH GOATS AND SHEEP

THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS

This is quite a long book, and needs perseverance. The main narration is by ten-year-old Grace. The action takes place in the heatwave of 1976 on a housing estate, where everyone knows everyone else’s business, and there is a central mystery concerning a disappearance which we see through Grace’s eyes. She decides to investigate, along with her friend Tilly. The flashbacks to 1967 give clues to the main thrust of the book, but the final twist surprised me without feeling I’d

There are a lot of different editions of this classic poem, so it’s worth researching which version you fancy – one with modern illustrations, such as this one, or one with a more traditional Victorian feel. I remember this from my childhood, and it’s just as magical now as it was then. It’s the poem you read to young children on Christmas Eve to persuade them to go to sleep: ‘Twas the night before Christmas, when all thro’ the house, Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse;

by Joanna Cannon (The Borough Press)

The misunderstandings of childhood are convincingly portrayed been cheated with a bolt from the blue. The misunderstandings of childhood are convincingly portrayed; the selfcentredness of pre-teens is well described too, as are the ignorant prejudices of the older generation. There are understated observations of parents – Grace’s mother is always having a lie down, and her mother and father have arguments via the dog, to whom they address their grievances. There are a lot of characters, and reading the book in fits and starts is not recommended as you forget who the people are. By the time I was halfway through, though, the pace had picked up and I read through to the end without getting confused.

by Clement C. Moore and Mark Marshall (Little Tiger Press)

It’s the poem you read to young children on Christmas Eve to persuade them to go to sleep The stockings were hung by the chimney with care, In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there; The children were nestled, all snug in their beds, While visions of sugar-plums danced thro’ their heads; And Mama in her kerchief, and me in my cap Had settled our brains for a long winter’s nap When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter, I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter. Away to the window I flew like a flash, Tore open the shutters, and threw down the sash; The moon on the breasts of the new-fallen snow, Gave lustre of midday to objects below. When what to my wondering eyes should appear, But a miniature sleigh and eight tiny reindeer… December 2018 | SUSSEX LIVING 73

INFECTIONS

OF THE NERVOUS SYSTEM Encephalitis is usually caused by viruses the most common being measles and mumps which are uncommon in developed societies with good immunisation programmes but very common worldwide. The lack of immunisation take-up by some parents is worrying and has increased the incidence of these two diseases with the associated risk of encephalitis. In some parts of the world there are specific viruses that cause encephalitis, often seasonally. The most severe encephalitis is caused by the herpes simplex virus with a high degree of mortality or poor recovery in spite of the availability of specific anti-viral drugs. Some rare forms of encephalitis can occur in association with a general infection (usually but not always viral), causing an indirect inflammation of the brain rather than a direct attack by the virus itself. There are also similar conditions when the brain’s interconnecting nerves have their insulating myelin damaged (post infective demyelination). In addition, we are now aware that some cancers and many auto immune conditions (when the body’s defence system attacks itself ), can cause an encephalitis like condition. Many unusual organisms including fungi, protozoa and others can infect people whose immune system is depressed because of disease or medication, for Meningitis is example patients on usually caused chemotherapy or Urgent diagnosis including by one of three with HIV/AIDS. lumbar puncture, blood tests It is important common bacteria and one rare one and brain imaging is essential to recognise (TB), all of which that many of especially in children are now largely our infections preventable by (especially viral), immunisation or easily treated by have or will come from animals e.g. antibiotics, recognising the threat from HIV/AIDS, Avian Flu, Ebola. antibiotic resistance. roadly, infections of the nervous system affect the meninges (the brain coverings), or encephalitis (the brain itself), frequently both and fall into three groups; bacterial, viral and other rarer causes. The symptoms common to both conditions include fever, severe headache, sensitivity to light, confusion and in the case of encephalitis, impaired consciousness, epilepsy and occasionally symptoms masquerading as a stroke. Urgent diagnosis including lumbar puncture, blood tests and brain imaging is essential especially in children, to distinguish between bacterial and viral causation because bacterial infection requires immediate life-saving antibiotics, whereas it is only rarely that viral infections can be given specific antiviral medicines. 76 SUSSEX LIVING | December 2018

CHARITY

Home is where ❤ the heart is ❤

As part of the Big Give Christmas Challenge, St Peter & St James Hospice hopes to raise £50,000 to support local people through calls and visits at home. Here, Gary Marshall, a Community Nurse Specialist at the hospice, explains why support at home is so important and what caring for local families means to him

A

ll of our hospice services are focussed on helping people with a terminal illness achieve the best possible quality of life, and in the community team we do this by offering expert advice and support in the comfort of patients’ own homes. While on my visits across Mid Sussex, I might review someone’s medication or work to ease difficult symptoms, offer guidance around the next stages of illness or help somebody put plans in place for the end of their life. Sometimes it’s simply about having a chat to patients and relatives and listening to their worries or helping them to understand what’s happening. To be welcomed into people’s homes is a privilege. You get to see the real person and paint a vivid picture of their life. I love forming those deeper connections with those I’m supporting. I feel people are often more relaxed at home too, which lends itself to more open conversations. People can be quick to assume that being a nurse in this setting is difficult and depressing. Naturally there are very sad moments, but it’s uplifting too; I get so much out of what I do. I’ve got to know so many wonderful people from all walks of life and I witness the very best of humanity.

78 SUSSEX LIVING | December 2018

Debbie and partner Gary

To be welcomed into people’s homes is a privilege Earlier this year for example I supported Debbie, 49, who had sadly found out that her breast cancer had spread and become incurable. Debbie was an amazing woman with a closeknit, supportive family. I was always

touched by the amount of love in that house and inspired by Debbie’s vigour and zest for life. She had a wicked sense of humour! Thanks to the generosity of local people, we could ensure that Debbie’s last months were the best they could have been: she was well-informed as she wished, was able to put plans in place, and spent so much precious quality time with her partner, Gary, and her three children. She passed away peacefully at the hospice in May. To have been able to improve her quality of life and put her somewhat at ease was incredibly rewarding. Every day my job rewards me. l To help nurses like Gary bring comfort, joy and dignity to more local people living with terminal illness, visit thebiggive.org.uk from 27th November – 4th December and search ‘St Peter & St James’ – your donation will be doubled!

INTERVIEW

Listen up!

Bringing magazines and news to the sight-impaired, Wealden Talking News is at the forefront of innovation, as Peter d’Aguilar finds out

B

ack in 1975, Heathfield and District Talking Newspaper Association was a pioneer in providing audio news for the blind. In 1983 its founder, Ted Davis, set up National Talking News & Magazines to offer a subscription service across the UK. In 2013 the RNIB took over its management until financial problems and a reduction in listener numbers forced its closure three years later. Today, the dedicated volunteers of Wealden Talking News (WTN) are once more at the forefront of innovation by bringing mainstream magazines – free of charge – to the sight-impaired across Sussex. In 2017 WTN secured a £10,000 National Lottery grant to rejuvenate its recording studios in Heathfield and this, together with an influx of 80 SUSSEX LIVING | December 2018

‘polished’ readers from the recently closed RNIB studio, enabled the setting up of the new initiative under the dynamic leadership of Dianne Steele. A qualified nurse, midwife and chiropodist with a passion for digital communication, Dianne first started as a reader twenty-five years ago after the death of her husband. Today, supported by technical manager Mike Hollis and a dedicated team of volunteers, Dianne is busy spearheading the new Sussexwide Publications (SWP) initiative across both East and West Sussex. “Many local Talking News services are in decline or closing, due to the lack of local news reporting and advances

in treatment for the sight impaired,” explains Dianne. “WTN is once again leading the way, moving in the opposite direction and expanding!” WTN produces a memory stick containing four thirty-minute news editions gleaned from the local newspapers each week, plus another thirty minutes of general interest features. In addition, it is now offering monthly audio recordings of Sussex Living and Sussex Life magazines, as well as a compilation entitled ‘Listeners’ Sussex’. “While it’s great that medical science is reducing the number of people with sight impairment, there are still many – especially the very elderly – who feel isolated from the mainstream media,” says Dianne. “We have a wealth of talented readers generously giving their time, so we want as many people as possible to benefit. We are taking our message to the outside world by building links with local NHS Trusts, opticians, charities and clubs, as well as Sussex’s sight impairment officers.” “Our audience numbers are increasing steadily and the feedback we’re receiving is very encouraging,” says Dianne. “Listeners speak of WTN opening up their lives. We want to reach as wide a demographic as possible, so plans are afoot to broaden our material to cater for more diverse tastes. We are using radio ads and flyers to spread the word but, as our ways of communicating are limited, we are keen for friends and relations to pass on information.”

We have a wealth of talented readers generously giving their time WTN entirely depends on donations to maintain its valuable service, and all staff give their time for free. Anyone wishing to volunteer or support the charity with a gift can do so via the website, wealdentalkingnews. org.uk, by emailing secretarywtn@ gmail.com or by leaving a message on 01435 862304. Likewise, anyone who is sight impaired and would like to sign up to this free county-wide audio magazine service can contact WTN with their details. l

PUZZLES

PUZZLE PAGE SUDOKU

A simple process of logic is all that it takes to solve each puzzle in this game. Put the numbers 1 to 9 in each vertical column and each horizontal line. Each number must appear only once in each column and line and in each of the 3x3 boxes in the grid.

CROSS CODE

Each number in the grid represents a different letter of the alphabet. You have three letters in the control grid to start you off. Enter them in the appropriate squares in the main grid, then use your knowledge of words to work out which letters should go in the missing squares. As you get the letters, fill in other squares with the same number in the main grid and control grid. Check off the alphabetical list of letters as you identify them.

QUICK CROSSWORD

Kakuro puzzles resemble crosswords which use numbers instead of words. The aim of the game is to fill all the blank squares in the grid with only the numbers 1-9 so that the numbers you enter add up to the corresponding clues. When the grid is filled, the puzzle is complete.

LOCAL WALK

PLUMPTON TO FALMER

WALK

‘Tis the season to be jolly. ‘Tis also the season to stretch one’s legs with the returning Tim… So, don your favourite festive pullover and traverse the Downs with us this Christmas

W

e left Lewes by train, arriving at Plumpton eight minutes later. Head for the western end of the platform, towards the larger footbridge, turning left at the end, walking parallel to the racecourse. Follow the tarmac as it skirts around the buildings, gently uphill and over the brow as it changes to concrete underfoot. Turn right at the T-junction by the end of the flint wall, noting the V on the Downs, two miles distant as the crow flies. Follow the loosely surfaced track for ¾ of a mile, along the natural ebb and flow of the landscape. At the end, turn left by the post box, veering right 50m later by the red telephone box. The track passes between old and new graveyards, a serene and scenic location whatever the weather. A ¼ mile later, turn left at the T-junction. The surface becomes looser as the Downs approach, narrowing to a footpath by the green metal railings where it enters the tree canopy. The trees become woodland as the path ekes its way up the shallow gradient of downland pre-scarp. Two gates precede a duplicate arrangement slightly further

84 SUSSEX LIVING | December 2018

“We’ve made the top of the Downs,” whooped Tim on, immediately before the Offham to Ditchling road. Turn right, walking along the road for 20m, before turning left and beginning the final major ascent of the Sussex Living walking year. Narrow at first, the path opens up as chalk appears underfoot and the gradient stiffens, increasingly. The gate opens on to Streat Hill. The route runs parallel to an old cutting, towards another gate. “I’ve missed these walks, it’s hurting my calves,” chirped Tim, as a seat appeared on the right.

The path arcs to the right into a bowl layered with ancient terraces, towards the V. Planted in 1887 to celebrate Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee, it consists of beech, fir and lime – with glorious shades of shimmering red, orange and yellow on the day we visited. The path finesses the tip, offering views of trees planted in parallel, generations ago. “We’ve made the top of the Downs,” whooped Tim as the wind welcomed us to the summit gate at 224m (735 feet). Turn left, along the South Downs Way, through the hollow at the top of Streat Bostal, past the junction with Plumpton Bostal, turning right 200m later, by the bridleway fingerpost. Where the path bears left, keep to the right of the fence. The trail leads downhill, towards a gate, just before the power lines. The steepness increases as another gate approaches, before the path reaches the valley floor of Waterpit Bottom. The route sweeps right and uphill, skipping across contours, beyond the gorse to the summit of Waterpit Hill at 150m (492 feet) at the metal gate. Ahead lies the sea, visible on the horizon. Alongside the path, a few wild rapeseed brighten the way. After half a mile wandering gently downhill, turn right at the dilapidated brick building, following the path into the lines of beech trees, then through them to the narrow road that runs alongside. Walk north along the road for no more than 150m, then take the path on the left, by the telegraph pole, turning 180° and heading south. Follow the path through the trees, alongside the new university blocks. Orange tipped posts indicate the route. Keep left when the path splits, gradually easing away from the buildings, eventually emerging at a road.

Turn right, and then left after 50m on to Eastern Ring Road, before turning right onto Southern Ring Road 150m after that. Follow the road downhill, for ¼ mile, taking the footpath on the left, as the road turns right. The footpath links to the A27, from which it’s a noisy walk west for a couple of minutes to the A27 underpass. On the other side of the underpass are the steps to Falmer station and the journey home. “That’s a real journey, very enjoyable,” summed up Tim as our train home pulled into the station. Happy Rambles from the 2018 walking team: Tim, Jago, Benjamin, Lucy, Beth, Joe and Muggins! l

Robert has tested the route personally, making sure it is suitable for walking. However, even he cannot guarantee the effects of the weather, or roadworks, or any other factors outside of his control.
