Looking for a scrumptious treat?

Sussex is famous for its rich culinary heritage. Traditional Sussex cuisine reflects the county’s history and culture, showcasing the use of locally sourced ingredients and unique cooking techniques. And if it’s your first visit to the county, sampling some of these dishes is an essential part of experiencing the unique charm and flavour of the county.

One of the most beloved dishes in Sussex is the Sussex pond pudding, a dessert that dates back to the 17th century. The dish is made with a suet pastry that encases a whole lemon, butter, and sugar. As it cooks, the lemon's juice mixes with the butter and sugar, creating a sweet and tangy sauce that pairs perfectly with the rich, crumbly pastry.

Another classic dish from Sussex is the Sussex smokie, a smoked haddock dish, which is made by placing the fish in a container with hot, buttery water and

allowing the smoke to infuse the haddock. The dish is traditionally served with bread and butter and is a perfect option for a light lunch or a delicious snack.

Banoffee Pie was invented in a restaurant in Jevington, near Eastbourne during the early 1970s. Now found on many menus across the country, the recipe has seen many variations across the decades. However, typically it is a pastry or biscuit case, filled with banoffee toffee (cans of condensed milk, cooked or boiled), sliced bananas and whipped cream.

Stand where the battle for England’s future was fought. Its history began on the fateful 14th of October 1066, when after many hours of hard fighting, William the Conqueror’s Norman invaders finally defeated King Harold Godwinson’s English army in this very place.

Discover the dramatic story of the epic conflict in the visitor centre, where a host of interactives, displays of Norman and Anglo-Saxon weaponry, and a compelling film recount the background to the battle, the fighting, and how the Norman victory transformed the nation’s history.

Accompanied by an audio tour, explore the battlefield on the battlefield sculpture trail, where wooden sculptures depict Normal and Saxon soldiers. Head to the gatehouse rooftop to

soak up stunning views of the beautiful Sussex landscape, and enjoy the fresh air and open spaces surrounding the breath-taking ruins of the Abbey, built by William shortly after his victory.

With so much to see, do and experience throughout the site, you’ll be grateful for a break in the café, with indoor and outdoor seating. There’s a children’s playground nearby, with timber play stations inspired by the site’s history to climb and swing on. With so many ways to enjoy the scene of England’s most renowned battle, this vast and varied site provides a unique day out for the whole family. Book now and save at:

A range of stunning scenery

Sussex is known for its stunning natural landscapes and breath-taking beauty spots in the South of England, but you need to see it to believe it. From rolling hills to tranquil lakes, the county offers a wealth of natural beauty that draws visitors from all over the world, while also offering a tranquil retreat for weekends away from the city life.

One of the most iconic beauty spots is the Seven Sisters, a series of chalk cliffs that rise majestically from the sea. Located along the coast between Seaford and Eastbourne, the Seven Sisters offers stunning views of the English Channel and is a popular spot for hiking and photography.

Beyond these white cliffs is the South Downs National Park, an area of outstanding natural beauty that covers over 1,600 kilometres across both East and West Sussex. The park offers a range of walking and cycling trails, as well as plenty of opportunities for wildlife spotting and stargazing.

For those who prefer lakes and rivers to hills and cliffs, the Cuckmere Valley is a must-visit destination. The valley is home to the meandering River Cuckmere, which winds its way through picturesque villages, rolling hills, and tranquil meadows. It is a popular spot for birdwatching, fishing, and picnicking.

Devil's Dyke, a dramatic natural landmark located near Brighton, is another popular beauty spot; this deep V-shaped dry valley was created during the last ice age and offers stunning views of the surrounding countryside. Visitors can take a leisurely stroll along the ridge, enjoy a picnic in the park, or try their hand at paragliding or hang-gliding.

For those looking for a more secluded natural beauty spot, the Rye Harbour Nature Reserve is a hidden gem in Sussex. This peaceful reserve is home to a diverse range of wildlife, including migratory birds, rare plants, and even seals. Visitors can explore the reserve on foot, by bike, or by boat, and enjoy the tranquillity of this unspoiled natural haven.

The county has many historical places to visit including ancient castles, beautiful landscaped gardens, country estates and houses.

Sussex is a hotspot for the English wine industry and boasts the most densely planted cluster of vineyards in the UK. The limestone chalk soil and climate found in the region lend themselves particularly well to producing high-quality grapes for sparkling wine.

A treasure trove of natural beauty spots, offering something for every type of nature lover. Whether you're looking for dramatic coastal cliffs, rolling hills, tranquil rivers, or hidden wildlife reserves, Sussex is sure to leave you breathless with its stunning natural beauty.

Attracting top talent

Sussex has been home to many famous individuals throughout history and up to the modern day. From literary giants to legendary musicians, the county has been a hotbed of creativity and talent.

One of the most famous individuals associated with Sussex is the renowned author Virginia Woolf. Woolf was born in London but spent much of her life in Sussex, where she wrote some of her most famous works. Woolfʼs house in Rodmell, known as Monkʼs House, has become a popular destination for literary enthusiasts from around the world and other tourists exploring her heritage.

Another literary giant (and one beloved by local residents) who called Sussex home was Rudyard Kipling. The author of such classics as The Jungle Book and Kim, Kipling lived in Rottingdean for many years before moving to Bateman's in Burwash where he lived until his death in 1936. His former home is now a museum dedicated to his life and works and Batman's is now a National Trust property open to the public.

In the world of music, Sussex has also played host to some legendary musicians. The Cure frontman Robert Smith, was raised in Crawley, while legendary guitarist Jimi Hendrix spent time in Sussex during the late 1960s, performing at local venues

such as the Brighton Dome. ABBA, of course, famously won the Eurovision Song Contest at the very same venue in 1974!

Sussex has also been home to some famous actors and actresses over the years. Dame Judi Dench, one of Britainʼs most beloved actresses, lived in the town of Westmeston for many years. Similarly, actor Benedict Cumberbatch, known for his roles in Sherlock and Doctor Strange, has a home in the town of Rye, as does former Doctor Who legend Tom Baker. Prior to her move to the US, singer Adele lived in Partridge Green. Beyond the world of the arts, Sussex has been home to some notable politicians and public figures, including David Cameron, Piers Morgan and Sir David Attenborough.

Sussex has, and will continue to be, a hub of creativity and talent, attracting many famous individuals from various walks of life. From literature to music, acting to politics, the county has played host to some of the most iconic figures in history. Whether youʼre a fan of the arts or simply interested in the lives of the rich and famous, the county has something to offer.

We use our gardens, restaurant and market to promote learning through food, plants and the environment. At One Garden we teach modern horticulture, floristry and contemporary land-based education through a range of part time courses and workshops led by expert tutors from the college.

The newly built restaurant, One Kitchen,

aims where possible to serve local, seasonal dishes with meat and wine produced by our students and prepared by our apprentices and chefs. We have a thriving calendar of events to showcase the beauty of the surroundings.

One Market is a busy and vibrant space where you will find something different every day. We proudly present the best produce and craft producers Sussex has to offer.

Local businesses are paramount to what we do. With our network of visitors, suppliers and teachers we celebrate the achievements of the people in our community. We love discovering local people with ideas to bring to our wonderful garden. www.onegardenbrighton.com

Good Vibrations Society – 4th - 6th August 2023

A weekend of music, ecology and well-being to nourish your soul. Something magical is happening deep in the Ashdown Forest this August! A camping weekend filled with worldclass music, inspirational talks, workshops, classes, an outdoor spa with treatments and wild swimming, Good Vibrations Society will offer you an opportunity to truly relax in nature.

Enjoy live music and DJs from midday till the early hours; choose from talks, yoga classes and afternoon workshops or one of the many activities like hot air ballooning over the forest, to the giant slip and slide into the lake. The younger members of the society can head down to The Hive each day for games,

robot building and circus classes, or just splash about in the giant sandpit!

Camping is the best way to enjoy the weekend; in a tent, a yurt or your camper, there’s plenty of room and a nightly opportunity to lay back and watch the stars.

This year’s major addition is extra activities in the mornings and afternoons; a wellbeing area offering wood-burning saunas, jacuzzis and a plunge pool set within a peace garden. One-onone healing treatments and a venue dedicated to talks, where we have, along with Seed Talks, invited a number of inspiring thought leaders to share their ideas with the society.

With five unique museums across the city, Brighton & Hove Museums has something for everyone…

The Royal Pavilion

Discover the pleasure palace where the Prince Regent, later King George IV escaped royal life in Regency London to indulge his tastes in art, music and dining.

One of the most exotically beautiful buildings in Britain, the Royal Pavilion was later used by King William IV and Queen Victoria. Now it’s been restored to its original 1823 splendour, with Indian architecture contrasted with interiors inspired by China, so you can experience it as it was at the heart of fashionable Regency society.

Brighton Museum & Art Gallery

Alongside permanent galleries including Ancient Egypt, Fine Art, 20th Century Art & Design and the Archaeology gallery, there’s a constantly changing programme of exhibitions, displays and events.

Booth Museum of Natural History

With nearly a million specimens from the natural world, the star attraction is the Victorian taxidermy of collector Edward Booth.

Hove Museum of Creativity

Home to the Hove Film Pioneers and South East Arts craft collection, local history, fine art, toys and changing displays and events.

Preston Manor

A charming Edwardian Manor house open for special events.
