OUT & ABOUT

OUT! Put family fun at the top of your August to do list, and take some inspiration from Sara Whatley’s family fun day ideas

A

ugust is officially family fun month, hurrah! No matter what age your family is you can still join in the larks; from kid’s games to festivals, this is fun for all ages. At the peak of the school holidays and in the blazing sunshine (hopefully!), August notoriously feels like a bit of a holiday month, if you are home or away. Make the most of it this summer and try some

new activities or shake up your tried and tested favourites with some new ideas. Be it a day on the beach or a hike over the Downs, embracing a bit of tech with identification apps might make the everyday more exciting. Identify the nature around you, the planes up above or the boats out at sea, and many other things too. Here are some ideas for fun family days or weekends out and about. Whatever you do, just make sure you all have a jolly good giggle!

August 2022 | SUSSEX LIVING 9

Use these brilliant and often free apps to help you connect with nature on a deeper level by understanding what it is you are seeing or hearing

GET TECH Life is more interesting when you know what you’re looking at or learning about what you can see. Step up identification apps. Use these brilliant and often free apps to help you connect with nature on a deeper level by understanding what it is you

are seeing or hearing. They will make you slow down to look and listen more closely, and expand your horizons when looking outwards, at the stars or clouds, for example. Days at the beach can be enhanced by tracking any boats you

can spot – seeing where it has come from and where it is going – or how about following that helicopter or plane and seeing where it will land? Here are some ideas for things that you could identify: • Stars • Clouds • Butterflies • Moths • Birdsong • Rocks and Crystals • Trees • Plants • Flight tracker • Ship tracker EXPLORE INDOORS Some days require a little indoor time and a slower pace, but that doesn’t mean they can’t be fun too. There are loads of fun indoor activities to do in the home or out and about too. A great place to start is getting involved with your local library. Bookworms will love the ‘Gadgeteers’ Summer Reading Challenge 2022 (check out www. summerreadingchallenge.org.uk).

10 SUSSEX LIVING | August 2022

A host of brilliant galleries can be found in Sussex, often with special summer shows and activities for children too

MAKE YOUR OWN ART GALLERY Set a theme, for example, portraiture, seascapes or pets and get the whole family to join in creating pictures, paintings and collages. Make and decorate simple cardboard picture frames to stick around the pictures, and then hang them in a ‘gallery’ (inside or outside). Why not have a private viewing and invite friends and family over to see your masterpieces with a glass of something sparkling?

Create an online profile to keep track of books you have read, get recommendations, find out about authors and illustrators and discover tons of fun activities and games too. This programme is aimed at 4-11 year olds to encourage reading enjoyment and to help prevent the summer reading ‘dip’. Many libraries also provide toy libraries, where you can borrow toys to take home, and other activity sessions for children such as Rhyme Time, Toddler Time, and Saturday Singalong. There are also many activities for adults to enjoy at the library. Try a Knit and Natter session, Melody for the Mind, Reading Groups

or Board Game sessions. And of course, let’s not forget the books themselves! Museums can be a great source of interest and fun for children of all ages, and adults too. Make a day trip out of it and visit one of the big ones in London or keep it local and discover what’s on our own doorstep. You may be pleasantly surprised at what you can find in Sussex, from fisherman’s museums to seeing dinosaur bones and

ammonites, agricultural interest and aeronautical museums, and many more besides. How about a gallery? A host of brilliant galleries can be found in Sussex, often with special summer shows and activities for children too. Become a culture vulture for the day and soak up some inspiring art and design. Then come home and have a go yourself. GET OUTDOORS Summer is the time to make the most out of being outdoors, and there is endless fun and adventure to be had.

an invigorating sea swim (make sure you find a beach with lifeguards) or find a local lido, another glorious way to enjoy the water outdoors. If your family enjoy the sportier side of life a sports day might be a good option. Arrange a mixed assault course catering for the ages you have. For older children and adults, a match is a good competitive thing to sink your teeth into… try volleyball, cricket or rounders. Climbing is another great fun sport and adventurous too. There are climbing centres to try or outdoor climbing on rocks. This one is probably more suitable for older children and adults. OTHER ACTIVITIES If your family love a good bounce, then an inflatable park is just the place for you. Huge inflatables, slides and ball pits await hours of jumping fun, and with areas for little bouncers too, these parks really do cater for all ages. Got your glitter Older children and sleeping bag might enjoy laser at the ready? Then it’s off to a festival tag, paintballing, you go! There are a meal out and a so many family late night friendly festivals about these days, and many of them are in Sussex. Have a whole weekend of music, food, child friendly activities, workshops, days to food festivals, dog shows to and silliness, or just go for a day village fetes and town fairs. Perhaps and pack it all in; get all the fun the circus is coming to visit your area and your own comfy bed at the and a night out in the big top awaits! end of the day. There are also ‘YES’ DAY many other day events Ever heard of a yes day? Well, it’s to be found in the very simple really; you just have to month of August in say yes to everything! This can be a Sussex, from music fun family game for all ages. It might be a good idea to lay some ground rules down at the beginning of the day (i.e., specify maximum travel time and expense) but other than that, anything goes. Smaller children might want to swim, play dress up with parents, eat treats and watch films. Older children might enjoy laser tag, paintballing, a meal out and a late night. Hopefully the parents also get some enjoyment out of the day, if not from some of the activities then from seeing the children deliriously happy with the power of yes! Spending time as a family being silly and having fun is so important.

Sculpture and the Human Body 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th, 17th and 18th September, 11am to 5pm Throughout her adult life Sarah Money has performed in physical theatre and contemporary dance. She studied Dance with Visual Practice and has taught Pilates for 20 years. This closeness to movement and the workings of the human body are evident in her sculptural practice. Rhythm, movement and the evocation of emotion through body language motivate behind her art. While her portrait heads are created directly from the model, her figures emerge from observational life drawing and her imagination. She uses heavy-grogged clay and once the pieces have been hollowed out, they are biscuit-fired, then stone-fired and glazed or painted. She is an enthusiastic member of the Artwave group. EN-GARDE! Fifteen-year-old fencing champion from Haywards Heath, Keira Donnelly-Sallows puts down her weapon for a brief chat with Sara Whatley

F

encing is Keira’s happy place. “It’s everything to me,” she told me when I met the 15year old fencing champion. Keira Donnelly-Sallows has been fencing since she was seven. She started at an after school club enjoying both the disciplines of foil fencing and sabre fencing. “Keira had a very encouraging teacher, who also used to be a fencer herself,” Keira’s mother, Kerstin told me. Keira’s potential was spotted and she was encouraged to join a fencing club outside of school. Here she continued training with both weapons until it was time to make the difficult decision to specialise in order to gain selection for the Under 17’s GBR Cadet Women’s Sabre team. “It was a heart decision to choose sabre, and I’m so glad I did,” Keira said. Last year was Keira’s first season and she participated in three international competitions. “We went to Hungry, Romania and Bulgaria. It was so valuable in my first cadet season to get some international experience fencing for GBR,” she explained. This season Keira will be competing more; participating in domestic and international competitions as an individual and part of the GBR team. “Last year was really

stressful travelling with Covid-19,” she said. “I just tried to stay positive and do my best. It’s pointless getting nervous all the time, you just have to push through and train harder.” Keira has a motto of ‘fencing to my potential’, rather than focusing on winning or losing.

It was a heart decision to choose sabre, and I’m so glad I did There are three competitive scenes in fencing: foil, épée and sabre. Each uses a different weapon and has different rules. Keira explained that points are scored in foil and épée with a hit from just the tip of the weapon,

August 2022 | SUSSEX LIVING 31

whereas in sabre any part of the sword can be used to make a hit. As such, Keira said that “sabre is much faster and more calculated with less margin for error.” As we speak Keira is ranked 3rd as a Cadet (U17) and 7th as a Junior (U20); she has recently won the British Youth Championships (U16) in Women’s Sabre, which required her to win the SE Regional Championships to qualify. Keira is also proud to have won the English Youth Championships (U15) – there are already a lot of medals around this girl’s neck!

When not fencing, Keira and her friends like to sample bubble waffles all around the world! Every week sees Keira training three or four times at her club, MX Fencing. She spars and fences one-onones under the guidance of her coaches, Phil ShepherdFoster and Rob Partridge. “I have loads of friends on the circuit,” she said. 32 SUSSEX LIVING | August 2022

Although, she explained, it is difficult to fence against your friends because they know your game and style so well. Dedication to the sport comes naturally to Keira as she loves it so much. “It’s everything to me; friends, community, fun, a place to relax. Although my emotions are heightened when I’m competing I love it and really enjoy it.” When not fencing, Keira and her friends like to sample bubble waffles all around the world! There are sacrifices that have to be made, however; for example sometimes Keira has to miss out on parties, but she said her friends understand and it’s a small price to pay for all the enjoyment she gets out of fencing. She

also has to do her schoolwork on the move sometimes. “My school, Brighton College, are really understanding and supportive. They give me time off when I need it,” Keira told me. Next year she will be doing her GCSEs but she’s confident of staying on top of her work. “I always catch up and communicate with them if I’m behind, then they don’t mind so much!” Proud mother Kerstin added, “Keira is a diligent student – self disciplined and motivated and mature in her

communication.” Qualities which I’m sure serve her well on the fencing piste (the surface on which the sport takes place) as well. And looking to the future? Keira has her sights set on the Brisbane 2032 Olympics and she is being supported in this long-term goal by the British Fencing Athlete Development Programme, with values based on honesty, teamwork, excellence and respect. It exists to support athletes who have potential to achieve Olympic success and inspire others. There is a belief that better people make better athletes; so it is athlete centred, development driven and competition supported. This enables Keira to take part in three or four camps each year, be surrounded by some of the top fencers and coaches in the country and really work on both her individual game and teamwork too. They also learn about nutrition, drugs education, mental health, and receiving constructive feedback. Keira is working hard towards qualifying for the European and World Championships this season, and is clearly focused, in the zone and totally in her element. This young lady is one to watch. l

I was pregnant with Charlie at that point, so we lived in a house adjoining the farm while work was being done.” The couple did the lion’s share of the work themselves, which was no mean feat, especially

sitting room, recovered from a tip and restored by Wendy. The couple wanted to retain a sense of the building’s heritage and so they restored the roof with salvaged slate and left the original brick wall exposed in the sitting room, covering it only with a lick of bright white paint. Once they had settled into their new home, despite their best intentions, the entrepreneurial couple didn’t rest on their laurels for long. “Within a year we had bought livestock and built up a fully-fledged free-range meat business,” laughed Wendy. “We had planned to pretty much retire on the proceeds of our PR company but decided we would get too bored. We turned one of the outbuildings into a butchery and learnt to make sausages, selling at farmers markets.” But then the duo realised that life was fast becoming too stressful again and they had lost sight of the initial reason for moving – to spend quality time as a family. “We were having to pay people to help look after the children,” remembered Wendy. So, in 2004, they called time on the meat business. Wendy started to do some part-time work for a TV script company and Steve went back to university to do a masters degree,

Wendy’s parents brought the Pelican oil painting back from Canada in the 1960s

leading to a new career as an environmental engineer. Then, spurred on by her and Steve’s ongoing experience of property development, Wendy set up an interior design business in 2009. “Friends were always asking my advice on how to do their houses and it inspired me to do an interior design course.” Finally, an equilibrium was achieved. “Both of us have always been determined to keep a work life balance with plenty of time to spend with the children,” said Wendy. As far as the farm is concerned, they keep things ticking over. Although they’ve scaled back on livestock, there is still the general upkeep. “The sheep keep the grass down and we have to maintain the hedges and the many outbuildings,” said Wendy.

Tiny red bedside lamp, from a flea market in Sicily. Wendy and Steve purchased the vintage cast iron and brass bed 30 years ago in London. Wendy has displayed her childhood books by Enid Blyton and Beatrix Potter as well as a collection of orange Penguins

Over the years, the children have reaped the rewards of their rural existence. “It’s been lovely having the space for the children to grow up in. They’ve enjoyed the animals and have had the space to run around and build camps and secret hideaways with friends. They even learnt to drive on the farm before hitting the road,” said Wendy. Although Maisie is now at university in Holland and Charlie is on his gap year, home is still where the heart is. “We have an opendoor policy and now they’re older they both have mini festivals in the fields with their friends.” What does the future hold now that the children have almost flown the nest? “There’s another project in my head, but I’m not sure it’s in Steve’s,” laughed Wendy. Whatever lies ahead, it’s clear the couple have garnered a huge amount of satisfaction from what they’ve achieved thus far. “I love the practical knowledge I’ve gained over the years. I think the most important thing I’ve learnt is the importance of sympathetic restoration. If you can afford to, buy reclaimed materials when renovating a period building because it makes all the difference for a seamless refurb.” l Words: Amy Maynard/ Living4Media Photography: Richard Gadsby/ Living4Media August 2022 | SUSSEX LIVING 49

Major Denis Rake MC, SOE (Special Operations Executive)

B

orn in Brussels 1901 Denis Rake led a colourful and sometimes mysterious younger life as he is said to have belonged to the Sarrasani Circus as a young child. He later pursued an acting career under the name Denis Greer, before joining the Royal Army Service Corps at the start of the War. Denis Rake escaped being sunk twice early in his military career, once whilst evacuating France as part of the British Expeditionary Force and again after joining the Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve. As a French speaker Denis managed to secure a place in the SOE French section as a Telegraph Operator. He had an eventful and controversial time in training, refusing to complete certain training but his skills and bravery so impressed that he was kept on and sent to the continent in 1942.

Denis served two terms as a POW in France, and after escaping, in Spain. Even though he suffered terrible treatment and permanent injury from interrogation he volunteered again in 1944 to return to France working with the resistance. He worked closely and was admired by Nancy Wake, the famous Australian SOE agent. After leaving SOE in 1944 he worked for Army Welfare Services organising entertainment for the troops. Denis Rake received the Military

Cross, the Croix de Guerre with palm and the title of Chevalier of the Légion d’honneur for his service in France.

His officer once said of him that “he says he is not afraid of death and I believe him”, Denis said that his lack of fear came from his need to prove himself because of the prevailing prejudice against his homosexuality, something he never hid. After demobilisation Denis worked on cruise

liners and also as a 2nd Butler for Douglas Fairbanks Jr and his family. When a piece of post came for him addressed Major Denis Rake MC, Douglas Fairbanks handed him the letter and Denis apparently replied “I was hoping you wouldn’t hear about all this nonsense”. Denis was later persuaded to write his autobiography Rake’s Progress – The Gay and Dramatic – Adventures of Major Denis Rake MC, the Reluctant British War-Time Agent. Denis Rake died in 1976, a later biography was written in 2009 – The Shooting Star: The colourful life and times of Denis Rake, MC. We are selling a collection of items related to Denis Rake’s life and wartime service, to include, his Military Cross, Croix de Guerre with Palm and Chevalier de la Legion D’Honneur. There is also a French Resistance Medal and miniatures medals. There are some related wartime papers from the French government, a signed copy of his book, postcards to his sister Esme from his time imprisoned in Spain and various photos of Denis Rake throughout his life. There is also a signed photo from Douglas Fairbanks Jr and his family to Denis. This lot represents a very poignant story of one man’s bravery in the face of the enemy and defiance in the face of prejudice from society.

DREAMS

What’s the connection between how our bedroom looks and how well we sleep? Well, it’s everything! Sara Whatley explores good bedroom hygiene and great sleep

T

he bedroom should be the most relaxing, peaceful and serene room in the house, but all too often it is used as a storage dump, stuffed to the gills and verging on a hoarder’s paradise. It is also often the last room in the house to be decorated, as it is not on public display. Worst case scenario, it is forgotten about all together and left as simply ‘good enough’. If your bedroom has slipped from heaven to hell, then it might be time for a well needed revamp. Redecorating a bedroom is more than simply aesthetics, however. The very quality of our sleep can be affected by our nighttime surroundings. A chaotic and stressful environment can

have a negative impact on sleep, and conversely, you may find yourself easily drifting off in an organised and calm atmosphere.

There are many different elements of bedroom decoration, including the bed, chic storage solutions, colour schemes, and environmental elements such as light, sound and temperature. As with all redecoration projects, there are different ways to approach this. Is it time to go in for a full overhaul, or pick and choose the priorities that make small but impactful differences to your bed space… and headspace? Just remember, your bedroom is your own personal zone, so really make it into a space you love. Try to keep work and gadgets out of the bedroom to promote a truly Zen and restful atmosphere. August 2022 | SUSSEX LIVING 53

THE BED Let’s get straight to the heart of the room and jump on the bed. On average, we spend a third of our lives asleep, that’s about 27 years over a lifetime, so it’s really worth investing in a comfortable mattress. Try before you buy and find your perfect mixture of foams and coils, support level and pressure relief for a totally relaxing night’s sleep. Bedding also plays a big part in sleep quality. Consider the thickness and texture of pillows to provide neck support and comfort; match duvet tog rating to the season to ensure a comfortable sleeping temperature and think about the sheets as well. In winter we need warmth and snug textures, and in summer we need crisp cool sheets to keep us feeling chilled. If you have difficulty sleeping, weighted blankets may help. This pressure therapy mimics the experience of being held or hugged and will make the sleeper feel secure and safe. REDUCE CLUTTER A clean, organised and clutter free bedroom not only looks great and functions well, it also promotes relaxation, calm and tranquillity, all things that can aid with good sleep. Storage solutions come in the form of shelves, draws, and wardrobes, under bed storage, Ottoman beds, and stylish trunks, boxes or baskets. The key thing is to reduce visual clutter, which means finding a home for everything and trying to be disciplined about keeping it there. Keeping the floor as clear as possible will make a room appear bigger and

DESIGN Your bedroom should be your haven; restful, positive and cosy, a place where you can totally relax and feel at home. Fill it with family pictures, meaningful art, books you love, candles, and inviting pillows and blankets, then lie back and drift off… Colour is a key element in bedroom design. Blue is favoured as a consistently popular colour for bedrooms, from pale denim to deep navy, and everything in between. Tonally similar is green, another relaxing and refreshing colour. Greens speak of connections with nature (as do blues) and blend well with other colours such as grey and yellow. provide that. Try layering different shades to bring a real depth of colour into your space. And of course, a light and airy neutral or white colour scheme always brings a sense of calm and crispness. Add highlights of colour with soft furnishings or keep it white and wonderful. ENVIRONMENT It’s harder to control environmental elements in the bedroom, but we can certainly have a go.

Keep light at bay with blackout blinds behind curtains, which are especially good for children’s rooms. Closing curtains against strong sunshine can also keep the room cooler. If light is still a problem for sleeping, try a sleep mask – mine is filled with lavender and sends me to dreamland in no time at all. Sound; although not always possible to control this element, most houses have a quieter side and a noisy side. Try to get your bedroom on the quiet side. Failing that, squeeze in some earplugs. rest. Lavender is the classic scent for relaxation, but others you might want to try include rose, geranium, and chamomile. The temperature and air quality of your bedroom can make or break a good night’s sleep. We all know tossing and turning on a sweltering summer’s night brings us little rest, whereas a cool room can bring about deep sleep and relaxation. Try sleeping with windows open, a fan on and keeping good airflow through the room. An air purifier may also help with quality sleep, removing impurities and reducing allergic symptoms. Now, with your revamped and restful bedroom in place, it’s time to unwind, snuggle up and close your eyes. Shhh… l

Then comes a thick layer of nutritious brown clay. All manner of plants utilise this middle space. After about a year, the cardboard will have degraded and you’ll have almost clear soil with its intricate structure undamaged.

STARSTRUCK

If you can remember ‘twinkle twinkle little star’ from childhood, looking up at the sky at night with a sense of awe and wonder then that sense of being starstruck will always be there, as Robert Veitch discovered when his lucky star led him to an expert

S

andra Voss is Science Director at The Observatory Science Centre, having worked there since 2003. Her physiology PhD is from the Royal Veterinary College. “Years ago, I came here with my husband, we picked up a leaflet for a ‘Beginners Astronomy Course’ and decided to do it together. In 2003, National Astronomy Week promoted a close approach of Mars and I took a part-time job here. One thing led to another, and now I’m Science Director. I eventually did my Astronomy GCSE,” she revealed with a grin. Sandra’s story proved astronomy can be a viable career change, and she also believes it’s a great career for schoolchildren with a mathematical or scientific inclination. “We have some super well qualified people with astrophysics degrees working here.”

Astronomy is a discipline where amateur contributions help the professionals. “Amateurs can spend vast amounts of time studying the skies and they are a greatly valued asset,” she revealed. It’s akin to an armchair viewer being able to help Lewis Hamilton’s F1 car go that bit faster. The development of astronomy was rooted in practical necessity. It was Charles II who commissioned the construction of the Royal Observatory Greenwich in 1675. Located on the Prime Meridian it divides the world into eastern and western hemispheres, and is the place where Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) originated. The purpose of the observatory was simple, to map the stars more accurately and help shipping navigate at night and when out of sight of land, ultimately to reduce shipwrecks. When star charts

Sandra’s top tips for summer stargazing newbies • It must be dark and cloud cover must be at the absolute minimum, ideally opt for cloudless skies and a minimum of light pollution • Go out into the garden, or up to the Downs, take a blanket, lie down and watch the night sky light up • With the naked eye, the more you look the more you see as your eyes adjust to the darkness 13 inch Astrographic Refractor

were coupled with accurate maritime timepieces linked to GMT, it was possible for ships to locate themselves exactly. As a result, the number of shipwrecks drastically reduced. John Harrison, a marine chronometer, developed the first accurate maritime timepieces and it was Harrison’s ‘lesser watch’ that made the Trotter brothers millionaires in the Only Fools and Horses episode Time on our Hands. Over time, the study of the stars became a scientific endeavour that is still searching for the answer to how it all began as well as fulfilling humankind’s innate inclination to explore the heavens above us… think one small step in 1969 and return to the moon in 2025. Sandra picked up the story. “After WWII it was decided to move from

Greenwich, due to increasing light pollution and magnetic interference from the electrification of London’s railways.” Over 70 sites were investigated, before the Royal Greenwich Observatory, Herstmonceux opened in 1957. The six telescopes that were transported from Greenwich became known as the ‘Equatorial Group’ and included the astronomically famous Yapp telescope. The observatory domes were coated in copper and a chemical coating was applied to speed up the weathering, to help them blend into the countryside. “Rumour has it, the chemical coating was equine urine.” Sandra revealed with a smile. Trees were planted during construction to screen the observatory

from the village, and because trees limited ground level heat haze and kept ground temperature more even. The walls were finished with knapped flint to maintain congruity with their surroundings. A 90-year old stonemason from Lewes had to be coaxed out of retirement to undertake the work. In 1967 the Queen opened the Isaac Newton Telescope, which was

the biggest in Britain at the time. “Low altitude and mist rolling in from the Pevensey Levels made observations difficult,” said Sandra. In 1979 it was moved to a much higher altitude at the Roque de Los Muchachos Observatory on the Canary Island of La Palma. Cold nights on the edge of the marsh had to be endured, because heating the domes meant the warm air would rise

and blur the photographs. At its peak, over 200 people worked at the Royal Greenwich Observatory, Herstmonceux. In 1990 the observatory moved from Sussex to Cambridge and five years later The Observatory Science Centre opened, under the stewardship of the charity, Science Projects. It runs as an education centre and as a tourist

attraction, assisted with Lottery funding. Sandra’s passion for astronomy is evident from the way she spoke so enthusiastically about it, “I always get a ‘wow’ when I look up on a clear night.” She was keen to point out that seeing a shooting star is potluck. “A shooting star is generated by heat, caused when a meteor is captured by the earth’s atmosphere – It’s like putting your finger over a bicycle pump – The air pressure generates friction then heat, which generates ablation, which creates the white contrail behind the meteor.” The part of a meteor that survives the impact with earth becomes a meteorite. Sandra’s top tips to take stargazing to the next level • With 10x 50 binoculars, planets start to become visible, and the largest craters on the moon are relatively easy to spot • Entry level telescopes start at about £100 – diameter of the optics is key • An entry level telescope will also make the rings of Saturn and the moons of Jupiter visible • Make sure the tripod is sturdy enough to keep your telescope steady • Once you’ve learnt 3-4 recognisable constellations and can locate the north star, the gaps start to take care of themselves • Use a stargazing app to help build your knowledge

Sandra told me the International Space Station is sometimes visible on a clear night. “It can take up to six minutes to move from one horizon to another, depending on where it is. It shines so brightly, find its course at www.heavens-above.com” “The Andromeda galaxy is visible during August,” revealed Sandra, “rising over the eastern horizon just after sunset. It’s the furthest and oldest thing you can see with unaided eye. It’s 2.5 million lightyears away.” That’s 15 trillion (1012) nautical miles if you like an 18th century shipping analogy. “The universe is estimated to be 13.6 billion years old,” added Sandra, at which point

I stopped fretting about the length of the queue at the traffic lights earlier that day. Earth bound telescopes have to deal with atmospheric conditions, but telescopes in space are a completely different proposition. When the Hubble Space Telescope became operational in 1993 its images helped redefine our view of our interstellar neighbours and ourselves. Though it could see back to the early days of the Universe – about 500 million years after it formed – it’s about to be put in the shade by the James Webb Telescope. Launched on Christmas Day 2021, its mirror has six times the surface area of Hubble and can detect images 100 times fainter. It’s currently ‘parked’ in a halo orbit at L2 La Grange point, 930,000 miles from earth, beyond the far side of the Moon. The first images were released just before

we went to press. “These images will knock Hubble for six, maybe more,” enthused Sandra. It might help confirm if somewhere out there, someone is running Tik Tok or an Instagram account from a very, very distant planet. There are three working historic telescopes at Herstmonceux. As Sandra opened the shutters of Dome D for me, I couldn’t help but stare into space and think, is there anybody out there? Beneath it was the 13-inch Astrographic Refractor, an early photographic telescope that helped locate 179,000 stars between 1892 and

• The annual Perseids meteor shower can be seen until 23rd August. The peak occurs when the intensity of meteors passing through our atmosphere is at its highest, on 12-13th August with 60-100 meteors per hour. They are pretty fast moving and can leave persistent trains • Constellations to look out for this month include the ‘summer triangle’ which consists of Cygnus, Lyra and Aquila which will be due south at midnight by the middle of the month • At the beginning of the month Saturn rises at about 9.20pm and Jupiter rises at about 10.40pm. Look for them in the east as they rise above the horizon. By the end of the month they rise at about 7.15pm and 8.40pm respectively. Jupiter is much the brighter of the planets, following Saturn across the sky

1905. Across in Dome E, I saw the large Thompson 26-inch Refracting Telescope, which has taken over 60,000 photographs during its working life. “Start thinking about our Milky Way,” effused Sandra. “Up to 400 billion stars, 2 trillion galaxies; it is awe inspiring to contemplate what is going on. What is up there, and who is out there?” The Star Wars crawl – A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, suddenly seemed more than a little inconsequential. Reality is more powerful than you can possibly imagine! l

• By the middle of the month Mars will rise before midnight, getting brighter each night, and brighter than Saturn. Look out for the orangey-red object following Saturn and Jupiter

WALK

We like at least one epic walk each summer so we sent Robert Veitch on a Rother Valley ramble, full of rivers, railways and resplendent scenery. It’s a grand walk that makes for a grand day out, so pack your knapsack, grab a coffee and head for Robertsbridge

Robertsbridge & Bodiam

WALK F

rom the Station Road car park, or the station (if that is your start point), head west, about 20m past the level crossing, then take the footpath on the right. Follow the path past feather edged fence panels to the lamppost, then continue north, parallel to the railway

as far as the kissing gate. Hug the right side of the field, gently downhill to the far corner and the footbridge. In the next field, keep right and continue to the 3-way fingerpost. Turn right, through the gateway and under the railway to the gated footbridge, then into the

Grass control, Salehurst style

Keeping the grass under control is a small flock of sheep – how wonderful, how very English meadow. After 50m bear left, under power lines, over the small bridge, easing right at the fork, through the gateway, and under the heritage railway. Turn left and walk between the railway and the cricket ground to the road junction. Turn left, crossing the River Rother and following Northbridge Street to the roundabout and the A21.

Cross the road at the traffic lights and continue east, along the pavement of Church Lane. Once the pavement runs out, walk with care on the right hand side towards any oncoming traffic for just over ¼ of a mile, ever so gently uphill into the village of Salehurst, which has been in existence since before the Domesday Book. The Church of St Mary the Virgin provides a worthy distraction. The actors, Harry Andrews and Basil Hoskins are buried side by side in the churchyard. Also resident is Alfred Milner, who served in David Lloyd George’s WWI war cabinet and was involved in instigating the first twominute silence in 1919. August 2022 | SUSSEX LIVING 75

Keeping the grass under control is a small flock of sheep – how wonderful, how very English! Continue up the road, then around to the right as indicated by the ‘Bodiam 3½’ signpost. The road drops downhill and over the stream, before the only real climb of the day, through the trees of Rocks Hill, for ½ a mile, all the way to the traffic island. Turn right and continue along the ridge of Bourne Lane for 400m, then around a tight-ish left hand bend, to find a rickety looking stile on the right.

Follow the green carpet, parallel to the river, in the shadow of the levee Crossing the stile is the high point of the day at 71m (232 feet). Follow the line of telegraph poles on the right of the field to the open gateway. Strike out across the middle of the next field towards the tiny gap in the distant trees, where there is a stile. In the next field aim left of the copse and continue in the same general direction to the 2-sleeper bridge and stile. Treat any livestock in the next field with respect, and follow the path to the seesaw stile and the road junction. Cross the road with care to the kissing gate, then across the field to the 2-step

stile. 15m further on, turn left into the trees, over a stile, then past the pond and over the footbridge to the drive. Turn right and continue past the buildings, metal 6-bar gate, and wooden 5-bar gate. Beyond this, the path is wide and continues for ¾ of a mile to Bodiam. Walkers who are not distracted by the 14th century castle should turn right and walk south as far as the bridge over the River Rother. The steps on the right, immediately preceding the bridge, lead down to the flood plain. Follow the green carpet, parallel to the river, in the shadow of the levee, along the avenue of willow and Himalayan balsam, for just over a mile to the

junction with the road at Udiam. Turn left and walk extremely carefully along the road for about 75m to the gate in the hedge beside the mirror. Continue up the drive the to bridge with the ‘ducks’ sign. Take the gate on the right, through the tunnel of willow to another

gate. Beyond this, walk uphill to the 3-step stile, then to the top of the hill. Turn right, past the metal barrier and concrete bollards then 100m further on veer left and uphill past piles of insulation. After another 100m bear left at the oil tank, through the gap then up to the brow in the field, which at 55m (179 feet) is the second high point of the day. Continue past the redundant stile at the entrance to Holmans Wood to the fingerpost a few steps beyond. Turn right and walk through the woods to emerge at the orchard. Turn left and downhill, then 60m later, turn right walking between the trees to the track, then across it, into Crainham Wood, for 75m to the junction with the road. Cross with care to the fingerpost opposite, through the trees to a footbridge and

then a crop field. Keep left and follow the edge of the field to the footbridge. Do the same in the next field and in the field after that, at the end of which the path turns north, past a row of poplar trees. At the fingerpost, turn left, and continue along the right hand side of the field, then alongside the post and rail fence to the 2-step stile. Once across the pasture and another stile, the homeward leg is underway. Follow the tarmac of Redlands Lane for about a mile, until the pavement appears on the left. The pavement veers away from the lane, up and over the A21, emerging on the other side, as if by magic, back in the village of Robertsbridge. It’s a short hop past the tile-hung character cottages on Fair Lane to the High Street. From here it’s left then right, back to the car park or the station. But why rush… surely there’s time to reward oneself for an epic summer walk, well done. l Robert has tested the route personally, making sure it is suitable for walking. atey Hillier was looking for a second home outside London where she could enjoy weekends and summer holidays with her sons, Lloyd and Buzzy. As Catey hails from South Wales she had in mind buying a derelict cottage in the Brecon Beacons and doing it up. But as Catey said, “I spent a long time whizzing up and down the M4 but often got stuck in traffic and I thought realistically, this is not going to work. We needed somewhere closer to London.” August 2022 | SUSSEX LIVING 83

Luckily she discovered a website that specified commuting times from London. “I saw that Camber and Rye on the south coast were closer and much quicker to get to. We went to stay in Camber then searched along the coast until we found this bungalow at Winchelsea Beach. I always thought of bungalows as slightly old-fashioned but we immediately fell in love with the surroundings and could see the potential in the property.

Set on a shingle spit, the house stands on a single-track road that runs parallel to the sea wall. Originally a 1930s worker’s cottage, it has been extended and altered over the years. When Catey took it over she recalled, “The interior was a mishmash of clashing colours and quite tired looking. We insulated the loft, added new pipework and replaced the central heating. A lot of the work that we have done can’t be seen because we had to remedy some major problems. For example, a leaking pipe had saturated the chipboard under the oak floorboards in the sitting room, which all had to be replaced.” There was an existing woodburner and they’d enjoyed the cosiness of having a fire but it ‘ate’ logs, was expensive to run and Catey disliked its faux Tudor appearance. She chose a stove

The colour palette fell into place with bleached-wood greys, warm tones from the pebbles and greens and turquoise from the sea and marsh

that was energy-efficient with clean lines to replace it and this, together with updating the central heating system, has cut the oil consumption by half. With the practical work completed, Catey set about finding furniture and choosing colour and style that would be sympathetic to the location. “My starting point was using marine blue to paint the chest in the entrance hall. With that as my anchor reference the colour palette fell into place with bleached-wood greys, warm tones from the pebbles and greens and turquoise from the sea and marsh.”

GUEST BEDROOM “Painting the furniture the same colour as the walls makes the room look restful. I like to pick out small items like the picture frames and paint them a bold contrasting colour”

Decorating Tip

“If you are stuck you can paint everything white and start building up layers of colour. That is what we did”

Although they loved colours inspired by nature, they wanted a more contemporary industrial look in the kitchen. “I liked the look of stainless steel workbenches used in the catering trade and the first one worked so well that I decided to get another custom-made to sit next to the cooker.”

SITTING AREA “I love the black rocker which I found in a junk shop. It has a gentle retro feel without making you feel like you are walking into an exhibition of 1950s design”

KITCHEN “I softened the look of the stainless steel by introducing additional textures. I love the blue because it kind of represents the seaside”

The old metal cupboard was a junk shop find and is an ideal store for dry goods. Catey decided not to have it shot blasted to bare metal because the condition of the metal underneath was doubtful; instead she gave it a coat of metal primer and painted it blue. Whilst sorting the interior, Catey was planning the transformation of the back garden, which was more cottage than coastal in style. “The garden was a big learning curve. CHILDREN

Change is afoot in the Whatley household this month as they pack up and move! With more space in mind, Sara and team Whatley are… ALL BOXED UP!

W

He could not be happier drilling everything in sight, including his own mouth. “Oww!” he complained, the drill whizzing round in his chops. “Well, darling, don’t drill your own mouth then,” I said, words that I never thought would have to pass my lips. He just smiled his gappy-toothed grin and carried on anyway, before drilling his sister’s hands and feet back on and tightening up her knees. Jarvis doesn’t understand what’s going on and is largely unaffected by it all. In fact, he finds it all a lot of fun; eating dinner on the floor and helpfully unpacking every box he comes across. Mia however, knows that change is afoot but can’t get her head around it all. “Will we take our beds?” she asked, followed by a huge list of everything in her room. “Yes, we will take everything,” I patiently replied to everything she said, but I still don’t think she fully understood. Until she sees the empty rooms on the final day it is all too unbelievable.

e are officially bursting at the seams. When Robin and I first got on the property ladder we had a two-week old baby and plenty of room. We now have two rapidly growing children who are squeezed into their bedroom together, and no room to swing our cat. The children are quite happy, I must add, as they know nothing else and feel safe sharing with each other, but give it another couple of years and the screams of “get off my stuff!” will only get worse. It’s time for more space. Our living room has been turning into box land, much to the children’s delight. Every box we pack we have to sneak away from Mia and Jarvis who use them to build Every box we pack forts, sit in as dens, we have to sneak away cars, boats – whatever they can think of. The from Mia and Jarvis boxes are all covered who use them to with crayon and make build forts for a very colourful place to store all our worldly possessions. In the dismantling process Jarvis has become so obsessed by the drill that we had to get him his own, complete with realistic drill noise! 100 SUSSEX LIVING | August 2022

And that final day eventually came. We gathered up the remaining straggly bits, did the mandatory deep clean, then wandered around the echoey rooms and said goodbye. It’s amazing how quickly children move on. A few weeks later and their first home is a distant memory, perhaps only the raspberry bushes in the garden being missed. So now it is onwards and upwards to bigger and better things where our children can make more memories and grow even bigger, until we burst at our new seams too! l

By reprogramming your thoughts and feelings this will change your reactions to stress, leading to physical and mental wellbeing. These 16 Mindfulness Meditation tracks have been carefully selected with the common stressors that most people face and ones I see very often in my patients.

My programme will give you the tools to live the rest of your life in freedom, to finally experience true joy and happiness.

SECTION WELLBEING SUBJECT

THE TIME IS NOW We are all aware of the phrase ‘mindful living’, but what exactly is it and how can we achieve it? Sara Whatley investigates

I

am taking a deep dive into mindfulness. What is it? How will it benefit ones everyday life? And how does one achieve it? At its core, mindfulness is about being present in the now, being compassionate to others and aware of the world both around us and inside us. It is said that achieving true mindful living can benefit our lives in many ways, both physically and mentally. These benefits include reducing stress, helping our bodies fight illness, improved relationships, and enhancing selfcompassion. General improved overall health can follow living mindfully. The connection between a healthy body and a healthy mind is indisputable, and mindful practices really take this into account. For example, practicing yoga; classes combine movement and stretching for the body and the mind, which is

further enhanced by quiet moments of meditation and breathing. A mindful life is about being aware of our bodily health and mental health and nourishing both as best we can. During my research I found there are myriad aspects to living mindfully, depending on where you look and whom you speak to. But one I found particularly interesting was the idea of accepting things as they are. Whatever situation you are in, if

you can face it with acceptance (and even compassion) then it can be dealt with calmly and mindfully. This idea leads onto not being overly attached to physical stuff and remembering that it is all transient. If we can accept that one day our physical lives will end, then all the clothes we wear, the gadgets we depend on, the

cars we drive and the houses we live in become much less important and the real stuff is revealed; love, connection, family and relationships. Mindfulness is a practice that takes its time; you won’t wake up suddenly one day and proclaim, “I am mindful!” Rather, practicing everyday and letting it become part of a daily routine will create a wholesome, mindful way of living. Many of us multitask on a daily basis, juggling family, jobs and social lives, but how successful are we being within that, honestly? Mindful living embraces doing just one thing at a time. Perhaps that one thing today will be taking the first step towards a mindful way of living. l

How can I stop my gums bleeding? The Cause

The primary cause of gum disease is plaque. This starts off as a fine film of live bacteria that grows constantly on the tooth, root, and gum surfaces. If it is not completely removed each day it calcifies to a hardened material called calculus or tartar. This cannot be removed just with a toothbrush or floss and requires professional removal in the surgery. Plaque forms constantly in our mouths, initially in a protein layer deposited from our saliva, and it is thus unrealistic to attempt to make a mouth plaque free. The priority is to reduce the volume of plaque in your mouth to a level at which it is theoretically harmless and thus bring the disease under control.

The Solution

At Oakmead Dental Care our team of hygienists aim not only to achieve a healthy status in your mouth, but to also involve and give you the essential knowledge to help you keep it that way.

‘Tell me and I forget, show me and I remember, involve me and I learn”

Benjamin Franklin

“I am so pleased with the way Debbie has helped to stop my gums bleeding. I am so happy to have found such a caring and thorough hygienist and I would highly recommend her. I do struggle keeping up with dental hygiene and have found some hygienists to be very patronising. However, with Debbie I didn’t feel discouraged at all – quite the opposite!”

A NEW DO

Chop chop, it’s time for a summer snip snip! Discover the 2022 hair trends with Sara Whatley

E

very summer I get the urge to chop off all my hair. Maybe even shave it. Then, when the autumn sets in again, I’m glad I didn’t. But that urge for a new do is still with me and often culminates in my disappearing and reappearing fringe. This summer I think I’m going to go with the major trend of the season: layers. Do you remember ‘The Rachel’ haircut from 1995? Well, it’s back, albeit with a modern twist. Like all things 90s, the shoulder-length voluminous and bouncy layered cult cut has returned for a revival and slips right into the summer 2022 trend for layering. You will find most hairstyles sporting some kind of layers, be they short and choppy or long and soft, layering is the way to go. There have been some fairly extreme hairstyles around recently (think modern day mullet) but the feeling for this summer is more laid back and easy going. Soft layers, hairstyles that require less styling,

products and heat, and styles that are adaptable, i.e., look good up or down.

LONG AND LOVELY The summer always brings a trend for long, layered ‘beachy’ hair – easy to style and easy to look after. Pep this look up by adding a fringe, either blunt and exaggerated from the length, or

BEAUTY

more sweeping and graduated around the sides of the face. The shag: a mid-length cut sporting lots of choppy layers on the whole length of the hair. It’s a bit grungy and a bit messy, but a lot of fun and super stylish right now. Looks great with the addition of a fringe. Another mid-length style is the new take on the 90s Rachel cut. Lots of heavy layers frame the face and swing in under the chin to create a chic and stylish look. Be warned, this style is more high maintenance; make sure you are friends with your hairdryer and round brush! SHORT AND SWEET Let’s start with the shortest, the pixie! This is another throwback to the 90s but looks just as fresh today. Close cropped hair, sometimes slightly longer on top. Wear it mussed up and scruffy or neatly swept in one direction. A bit longer than the pixie and a bit shorter than the bob

Be they short and choppy or long and soft, layering is the way to go August 2022 | SUSSEX LIVING 107

is the bixie. Longer layers on top and around the face make this cut softer and adaptable to how you want to style it: mussed up or neatly in place. And the closer cropping around the neck will keep you cool in the summer too. Bob: this classic cut comes in all sorts of lengths, from jaw grazing to sitting just under the collarbone (this is a long bob or a lob). Layering with bob styles is not a must, in fact blunt bobs look sleek and sophisticated. But if you want to stick to the trend, feel free to muss your bob up with a few layers. l

A Taste for Turmeric From helping fight inflammation to preventing heart disease and cancer, turmeric may be the most effective nutritional supplement in existence, writes Adele Trathan

I

t’s tasty, has been around for centuries and is a key ingredient in Britain’s favourite dish – chicken tikka masala – but it’s only recently that the full benefits of turmeric have come to the fore. This gorgeously golden spice gives curry its orange tinge and has long been used in India as a medicinal herb. This is all down to compounds found within the spice, the most important of which is curcumin, which has powerful anti-inflammatory effects and is a very strong antioxidant. It can also be used as a lively, peppery essence in things like juices, foods and stocks. Of course, turmeric doesn’t have to be used in its raw form

of food preparation; it can also be taken as a supplement. Turmeric is a plant; curcumin is the naturally occurring compound within the plant’s roots that give it it’s bright yellow colour and is known as a carotenoid compound. A powerful anti-inflammatory, there is evidence to suggest a daily dose of turmeric can greatly benefit those suffering from joint problems and arthritis, although as it’s not listed as an arthritis treatment by the NHS, it’s unlikely to be prescribed by your GP. By reducing inflammation in the brain, the curcumin element enhances the flow of neurotransmitters. Curcumin has powerful antioxidant effects and fights free radicals, which have been linked to both ageing and cancer. The fewer of them in our bodies, the better. Several studies suggest that curcumin leads to improvements in endothelial function, which helps regulate blood pressure and blood clotting. There’s less need to feel guilty about an Indian takeaway now you know there are health benefits too! l

AMERICAN

Pancakes

Forget pricey boxes of batter mix, making your own fluffy stack of mini American pancakes is easier than you think writes Adele Trathan. Top them with one of our top tips and you’ll be the perfect party pancake provider INGREDIENTS 135g (4¾ oz) plain flour 1 tsp baking powder 1 tbsp sugar 1 large egg ½ tsp salt 130ml (4½fl oz) milk 2 tbsp melted, cooled unsalted butter (plus more for cooking)

METHOD Sieve all the dry ingredients into a large bowl. In a separate jug gently whisk the egg with the milk and cooled butter. Gradually add the wet mixture to the dry until a thick batter emerges. If it seems a little dry, add more milk, but remember it needs to be thick enough to hold its shape in the pan.

1

Heat a large non-stick 2 pan over a medium heat. Add a knob of butter

and once the butter stops foaming pour in a ladleful of batter – this is the ideal amount for small pancakes. Don’t crowd the pan but try to fry two or three at a time. After two minutes, or when bubbles have risen to the surface, flip and cook for a further two minutes. Repeat with the remaining batter until it’s all gone.

Serve the pancakes in stacks of two or three 3 with toppings of your choice and accept the compliments as they start to stream in. MAKES APPROX

12

Top Tips • Let your batter rest for 15mins before cooking for maximum fluffiness • Add a spray of vegetable oil into your buttered pan to prevent smoking • Use good quality toppings to complement your pancakes, such as pure maple syrup, fresh bananas or berries, chocolate chips, or even streaky bacon

CARE

BUDDY UP

My Future Care Buddy Service and Handbook is a lifeline for many preparing for later life. Sara Whatley talked to CEO Zoe Harris about these services

M

ycarematters is a not-forprofit social enterprise based in Horsham, and is dedicated to improving people’s experience of care. They do this through a series of products and services, including the

My Future Care Buddy Service and Handbook, in addition there is also the Mycarematters profiles, this is a free online tool where people can create a profile of their needs and preferences. CEO, Zoe Harris, told me about how it all started. “My late husband had dementia and as he got progressively ill, his wishes, needs and preferences were not communicated properly,” she said. When he moved into a care home for the last 13 months of his life, he got dehydrated because staff were offering him tea with milk, when he took it black. And when he lost his balance, the message that he needed his chair pushed against the wall did not get through to everyone and one day, when it was pulled into the room, he and the chair tipped over. Seeing that her husband’s needs were not being communicated effectively,

Zoe started leaving post-it notes on the walls of his room, which made all the difference to the staff, and his care. “The post-it notes evolved into laminated posters and the staff wanted to adopt this for other patients as well. Eventually 1,400 care homes across the country took on the Mycarematters Care Charts, which are a quick and easy way to get to know a person.” This led to further advanced care planning, something which people can find difficult to talk about. “The

Zoe explained how helpful this kind of written documentation can be for families as it clearly indicates an individual’s choices, such as end of life care and funeral planning. “It can diffuse family arguments and help ensure people are getting the care they desire and deserve,” said Zoe

“The Zoom call with my Buddy was excellent. I now feel that I’ve got back up with the daunting task of preparing for the future,” Julie, 65

Handbook grew out of this as a single point of access for later life information, and also as a tool kit for the patient to feel in control of their care, giving them a sense of wellbeing and empowerment,” said Zoe. During the trialling stages of the Handbook, Zoe noticed that people were procrastinating when it came to filling it in and making decisions; from here the Buddy Service was born. “We wanted to offer support to people

ty Safe ise Prom

using the Handbook,” Zoe explained. “Small groups of six people meet up online for an hour-long session where they share their priorities and identify what matters to them. They are sent the Handbook and this is followed up by three hour-long one-to-one sessions with their Buddy. Hopefully, at the end of the process all the decisions have been made, documents filled in and the whole thing can be parked, and the rest of their lives gotten on with!”

Mycarematters work with individual people directly and increasingly, with other organisations as well, such as St Catherine’s Hospice in Crawley where staff are being trained to offer the Buddy Service in person and help patients work on their Handbook. Is it normal to grow old gracefully, or disgracefully? Some like to dance in the lounge. Others just want breakfast in bed. Some may need help with the little things. Others with everything. That’s why our professionally trained carers at The Goldbridge provide individual support for those with residential, nursing and dementia care needs. Because we know there’s no normal way to grow old.

t this time of year, most of us are spending more time outside, enjoying the fickle visitation that is the British summer. For many, this means relaxing in our own exterior space, whether that’s a bijou balcony or airy acres. ‘Them Indoors’ are both keen gardeners, and, as Border Terriers, I like to think that is something we have in common. I personally enjoy digging in them, and I am quite an impressive excavator. ‘Them Indoors’ have also been doing some excavating of their own. MONEY MATTERS

Investing in

COMMODITIES

The history and emergence of trading, the complexities of modern markets, and the pros and cons of investing, are all explained by Lisa de Silva in her guide to commodities

C

ommodities are raw materials which are used to create products that human beings buy and use. There are four basic categories: • Energy Commodities – such as crude oil, natural gas and heating oil • Metal Commodities – such as gold, copper, silver, and aluminium • Agricultural Commodities – such as sugar, coffee, cotton, rice, and cocoa • Livestock and Meat Commodities – such as pork bellies, cattle, leather, and gelatine For investors, commodities represent

a way to diversify a portfolio, although the risk can be greater than investing in traditional securities. This is owing to uncertainties in supply and demand caused by factors such as a change in weather patterns, epidemics, along with natural and man-made disasters. A BRIEF HISTORY OF COMMODITY TRADING Commodity trading is as old as human civilisation itself, as to survive people needed to come together to barter and trade for food, supplies and labour. In Sumer (modern day Iraq) goats were thought to be the first commodity traded between 4500 and 4000 BC. Back then, clay tokens were pledged in exchange for goats and records of these tokens were recorded on clay tablets, making these the earliest form of commodity futures contracts. Over the years, various empires thrived owing to their ability to create

complex trading systems, enabling the exchange of commodities across huge areas of the world, via routes such as the Silk Road linking Europe and Asia. As commercialisation continued to increase, stock exchanges emerged to simplify the trading process and to enable these transactions, each

In Sumer goats were thought to be the first commodity commodity was standardised for quality and quantity. This meant that all commodities could command the same price regardless of where they had been produced. In 1934, the US government created the Commodity Price Index which tracked the price of specific commodities and today, most countries have their own version of this index. COMMODITY TRADING Commodities can be traded in either spot trades where a buyer and seller agree to trade at the present market rate, or future trades where both parties agree a deal for a predetermined date, price, and quantity. In this way, people can speculate that the price, for example, of gold will rise or fall in the future. Large amounts of money can be

The main driver of the commodities market is supply and demand both made and lost in a relatively short time, which anyone who has seen the film, Trading Places will appreciate. More generally, people invest in commodities to provide diversification, inflation protection and return potential for their portfolio. WHAT EFFECTS COMMODITY PRICES? The main driver of the commodities market is supply and demand. Commodities can benefit from rising prices making them an attractive proposition for hedging against inflation. Having said that,

some commodities are more prone to volatile prices than others, particularly agricultural commodities which can be affected by unusual weather, natural disasters, manmade events, and war, as we have recently seen in Ukraine, with the disruption to the production and distribution of wheat. HOW TO INVEST IN COMMODITIES Full exposure to the commodities market can be challenging and many

prefer to invest in commodity stocks, trading in the shares of companies involved in the mining, extraction, growth or harvesting of commodities. For example, if the price of gold is increasing, so will the price of stocks in a gold mining company. However, this works two ways. For example, problems with the oil supply chain would reduce the value of oil companies, even though the price of oil itself would rise, as supplies fell, and demand increased. Another option is to invest in Commodity Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs). These can hold a range of physical assets, such as gold coins or bullion or they can employ investment vehicles that mimic the underlying market. Commodity ETFs can be a good way of gaining exposure to a range of commodities or commodity-linked stocks, while minimising the risk. l

OPINION

IF YOU .

ask me..

Superior, entitled people never let a lack of knowledge prevent them from holding opinions, writes Flo Whitaker

I

’m currently helping to organise a funeral. For reasons I won’t dwell on, it’s a hastily arranged affair; inquest opened and adjourned on Wednesday, death certificate issued on Thursday, funeral a few days later. There’s a lot to do in a short space of time and you would assume all concerned would leap forward, eager to help – but no. Some are apparently content to sit on the sidelines and carp about the choice of undertakers, the reception menu, the Order of Service and much else besides. “But I don’t like salmon, Elgar, or peonies, and surely a cardboard coffin would be hideously unattractive?” Cue a patient explanation that the firm of undertakers was established almost 100 years ago, so they probably know what they’re doing. Also, eco-friendly cardboard coffins are definitely ‘a thing’,

138 SUSSEX LIVING | August 2022

even if you, or none of your friends, have apparently heard of them. They are also considerably betterlooking than you assume. Rest assured, the funeral directors don’t make the coffins, Blue Peter style, out of sticky-backed plastic tape and cereal packets scavenged from recycling bins. Oh, and peonies and Vaughan Williams’ The Lark Ascending happened to be two of the deceased’s most favourite things and, although you may dislike them, other “strange people” enjoy fish sandwiches. In conclusion; Shut Up – It’s Not All About You. It’s not your funeral – although, if you persist, yours might come around far sooner than you think… Wearily, I cast my mind back to minor problems, such as how to move a baby grand piano downhill and whether a substitute grave-digger could be found in time, as in a tragic, yet darkly comic turn of events, the usual gravedigger had dropped dead a few days previously. He probably saw us coming and quickly cashed in his dinner pail in protest. I can’t say I blame him.
