Wild Coasts Give your next family trip to the beach a nature-centric twist. Hanna Lindon picks out some of the best nature reserves and wild sites along the Sussex coast

ollecting crabs, fishing for blennies, trawling rockpools, losing your fish and chips to seagulls – some of the best family beach memories are built around wildlife encounters. If you’re planning a beach outing this summer, why not use it to explore one of the area’s incredible natural attractions? The Sussex coastline has some fascinating pockets of biodiversity. Offshore, nine Marine Conservation Zones protect 1,940km of ocean – this shadowy underwater world is home to a host of rare species, including short-snouted seahorses and Ross worm reefs. Work is currently underway to restore pockets of globally important kelp forest, which will provide a habitat for marine life as well as critical carbon storage. But the wildlife isn’t all offshore. Local nature reserves and protected SSSIs pockmark the coast between Bognor and Rye. This 60mile stretch of shoreline packs in some incredible habitat variety, ranging from vegetated shingle to chalk grassland, sand flats, woodland and mixed heather. Accessible walks, rockpooling, fossil-hunting – there are dozens of familyfriendly ways to explore these natural havens. Here’s our pick of the top spots.

Black Rock, Brighton

If you’re planning a trip to Brighton beach this summer, take some time to explore the brand-new boardwalk that runs through the recently rejuvenated Black Rock wildlife site. This unique coastal project has seen 1,000s of young plants relocated from Kew’s Millennium Seed Bank at Wakehurst to the shingle beach close to Brighton Marina. They’ve been planted in a ‘wave’ design to protect them from the elements and conservationists hope they will soon be home to birds, bees, butterflies and other small insects. There’s plenty of family entertainment to be had in the area including a scooter and bike-friendly coastal path and beach-side entertainment. Find out more: www.brighton-hove.gov.uk

Castle Hill Nature Reserve, Newhaven

With far-reaching views over the Ouse Valley and the English Channel, an ancient fort to explore and a network of downland footpaths to discover, this stunning reserve is a family favourite. Wander through hidden wildflower glades, keeping an eye out for birds, butterflies and other inhabitants of the rare chalk grassland habitat, then head down to West Beach for a spot of rockpooling and a look up at the crumbling cliff face with its noisy colony of fulmars. To make a full day of it, take in Castle Hill as part of a walk along the Seahaven Coastal Trail, or arrange a visit to the NCI Newhaven Lookout. Seaford Head and Hope Gap

Not only does the Seaford Head Nature Reserve boast iconic views over Cuckmere Haven and the marching white cliffs of the Seven Sisters, it’s also a stronghold for wildflowers, butterflies and birds. Some of the butterfly species you might spot include the chalkhill blue, silver-spotted skipper and dingy skipper, while skylarks, stonechats and whitethroats are also common sightings. During the spring and summer months a colony of kittiwakes take over the high cliffs of the reserve, and if you’re lucky you might even see a peregrine falcon. Cuckmere Valley

This slice of National Trust-owned coastal paradise divides the nature reserve of Seaford Head and the Seven Sisters Country Park. Over 200 bird species have been spotted in the area, including redstarts, ring ouzels, lapwings, wigeons, spoonbills, kingfishers and little egrets. Adders bask among the long grasses and the shallow waters are alive with crabs, lobsters, blue mussels, oysters and seahorses. The short walk from Exceat to the beach is an ideal family outing. Seven Sisters and Beachy Head

The dramatic chalk cliffs that stretch from Birling Gap to Cuckmere Haven are among the most famous features of the South Downs. Wildlife thrives in this high, windswept habitat, with kestrels, sparrowhawks and short-eared owls patrolling the skies and wildflowers framing the broad highway of the South Downs Way. For older kids, the walk along all seven of the sisters is a challenging but exhilarating prospect, with plenty of steep slopes to roll down and a beach waiting at the end. Widewater Lagoon Local Nature Reserve, Lancing

It might be man-made, but this brackish lagoon has become a haven for nature. Take a stroll along its banks, keeping your binoculars peeled for herons, geese, egrets and swans. There are plenty of water-dwelling minibeasts to look out for as well, including rare water beetles and a type of sea anemone found nowhere else but under the surface of Widewater Lagoon. Once you’re done soaking up the peaceful atmosphere of the lagoon, there are plenty of family activities to enjoy in the area. Home to more than 4,400 species of birds and animals – including 300 that are classified as rare and endangered – this is one of the largest and most biodiversity-rich nature reserves in Sussex. Shoreham Beach Local Nature Reserve

A short stroll from Widewater Lagoon you’ll find another species-rich coastal nature reserve. The vegetated shingle habitat at Shoreham Beach is a real rarity – it’s one of just a few places in the world where plants have adapted to thrive in the harsh, wind and waveswept environment of a shingle beach. In spring and summer, the beach bursts into life as sea kale, red valerian, yellow horned poppy and viper’s bugloss bloom. It’s home to the rare sand lizard, which is only found at a handful of sites across the UK. Birds thrive here as well, and you’ll often see terns wheeling through the skies, waders exploring the sandflats and meadow pipits hiding in the marram grass. f Lucy Howard’s West Sussex home could talk, it would no doubt be offering her its heartfelt thanks. 2008, Lucy recalls that they took one look at the breathtaking view from the garden across the South Downs National Park and knew this was the one. “That was before we had actually stepped into the house,” she laughed. “We’d been coming to the area for years because Joe’s parents have a house nearby, so we knew that places in a location like this rarely come up for sale.” The building, which was formerly two workers’ cottages serving the nearby farm, dates back to 1660, with later additions in the 1900s. as undertaking a complete decorative overhaul, Lucy and Joe also wanted to convert the stables into guest quarters and rebuild a traditional oak outbuilding that had been destroyed in a storm. Fortunately, Lucy loves nothing better than a project. “I trained and worked as a lawyer but I’ve always had a strong creative streak which I’ve channelled into doing up properties,” she confided. Having worked with Leeds-based builder-joiner Phillip Hogg on the family’s previous home, Lucy persuaded him to take on this project. “Phil is a proper old-school craftsman; I would draw what I wanted on the back of an envelope and he would interpret it,” she recalled. “He and his team set themselves up in the former agricultural barn, which already had a kitchenette, and they would come down for ten days, then return to Yorkshire for four.” Philip’s work includes the beautiful painted kitchen, which is traditionally made using solid wood. “People think I’m barking mad opting for solid wood rather than MDF but I wanted to be able to see the wood grain through the paint,” said Lucy, who

People think I’m barking mad opting for solid wood rather than MDF but I wanted to be able to see the wood grain through the paint confessed to being “utterly fastidious,” adding, “I tried twelve different cupboard handles before choosing these pewter ones. They pretty much blew my kitchen budget out of the water but were worth every penny.” Another indulgence is the choice of Calacatta Oro for the worksurfaces, a pure white marble that Lucy admitted to being “totally impractical, but I went for the aesthetics. It’s rather like wearing high heels – you sometimes have to suffer to look good.” Halfway through the project Lucy and Joe decided to sand the beams which Lucy explained, “was an unbelievably messy job but it has transformed the interior.” Lucy’s attention to detail is evident everywhere, from the traditionally forged wrought iron latches on the doors to the whitish-grey hue she has

Lucy, meanwhile, is busy tending to her beloved gardens whilst dreaming up the next project. “I have been taking a course in ceramics for the last four years and my plan is to install a studio and a kiln in the oak outbuilding,” she enthused. A mere mention of the Italian phrase and minds wander to Mediterranean cafes, tables and chairs spilling out onto the piazza, sophisticated yet relaxed couples and families laughing over chilled drinks. Music fills the air. Gentle lighting lifts the mood. Delicious smells waft in the cool evening breeze. Is this your idea of heaven? They may have a more temperate climate

over in the Med, but even here in old Blighty we can recreate our own little slice of the all’aperto dream. Sultry and captivating; lilies have graced our homes and gardens since ancient times, writes Flo Whitaker

f you’re new to lilies, start with ‘Asiatic’ types. Easy to grow; they are robust and reliable performers, even in cool, damp summers. Reaching approximately 90 cms high and typically flowering in June to July, most have little or no scent, but their bold-coloured trumpets pack

a visual punch. ‘Oriental’ varieties are similar, but highly fragranced and tend to bloom later, usefully giving a display during August. Lilium Regale also has an easy-going nature, plus a strong, heady fragrance, particularly at dusk. Regale enjoys life in sun or light shade and is unfussy about soil type. Sweetscented Lilium candidum has been prized by gardeners for thousands of years. Early Christianity was quick to adopt its ethereal blooms as a symbol of The Virgin Mary. Names such as ‘Madonna Lily’ and ‘Annunciation Lily’ have accompanied this time-travelling flower through the centuries. While many lilies prefer sunshine and deep-ish planting, (15cms)

in humus-rich soil, candidum favours shallower planting, (8 - 10cms), copes in poorer soils and enjoys light shade. Tree lilies are skyscraper giants, rocketing 2 - 3 metres high. Lilies can suffer from pests/diseases. Slugs and snails munch on them, but, in most circumstances, the damage is purely cosmetic. Fungal infections, (Botrytis) may appear as chocolatecoloured blotches on the foliage. Pick off affected leaves and dispose in the bin, not the compost heap, as fungal spores may contaminate other plants – but don’t panic. Spores of every type are naturally present in the environment and a significant outbreak of lily fungus is rare. More serious is virus disease, which gives plants a yellowed, sickly appearance and also causes deformed buds and leaves. Sadly, there is no cure – bulbs should be dug up and discarded. Tulips and lilies can be affected by the same virus strains. If you grow lots of tulips, be extra-vigilant. Lily beetles wear swanky, militarystyle red and black outfits. They first appeared in the UK in the early 20th century – probably hitching a ride from the Mediterranean. Once considered a minor pest, their population has exploded during the last 30 years. Our warming climate seems to suit them. Understanding their life cycle is essential to their control – remember, they have no natural predators here. You can find lily beetles anywhere in

the garden. They seem to favour tallstemmed plants and I’ve noticed them on allium, crocosmia, iris and suchlike, but they feed and reproduce exclusively on lilies. From early spring, Lily beetles adult beetles emerge after wear swanky, a winter hibernation under leaves or loose soil. They military-style lay small orangey/brown red and black eggs on the undersides outfits of lily leaves. GOING FOR GOLD MEMORIES OF LONDON 2012

fter London hosted the Olympics in 1948, the UK had bid unsuccessfully with Birmingham in 1992, and Manchester in 1996 and 2000. By 2003, nine cities had entered bids to host the 2012 Olympics and Paralympics – London, Paris, Madrid, New York, Moscow, Havana, Istanbul, Leipzig, and Rio de Janeiro. By the summer of 2004 the list had been whittled down to five and Paris was considered favourite. At the International Olympic Committee meeting in Singapore on the 6th July, 2005, Moscow was eliminated in the first round of voting, to be followed by New York and Madrid, which left London and Paris. In the fourth round of voting London prevailed by 54 votes to 50 and that night, the joyous scenes of celebration from Singapore, Trafalgar Square and elsewhere across the kingdom were reported on the news. The following morning the 7/7 terrorist attacks on London left 52 people dead and over 700 injured.

When the Olympics and Paralympics returned to London in 2012, the capital became the first city to host the games for a third time. Robert Veitch looks back on the games and speaks to some of those involved The Olympic party had become very sombre, very quickly. London’s bid centred on the rejuvenation of a 490 acre industrial area just north of Stratford, which would be the catalyst to rejuvenate the whole area as part of the games legacy. Olympic venues outside of Stratford were predominately in the capital and the southeast. It was London’s intent that there would be no white elephants after the games, that venues would have an afterlife and that the motto ‘inspire a generation’ would be the legacy. After seven years of construction, the UK was ready when the Olympic flame arrived at RNAS Culdrose on May 18th 2012 accompanied by a host of dignitaries, athletes and celebrities on the flight from Athens.

The following day, the 8,000 mile long Olympic torch relay began at Lands End and continued up and down the land with the aim of getting within 10 miles of 95% of the population. It reached Sussex on 16th July (day 59) and remained in the county during the following day, before crossing the border into Kent on the 18th July (day 61). After 70 days, 8,000 torchbearers, and having been witnessed by 12,000,000 spectators along the route, the flame entered the stadium and the cauldron was lit; a highlight of an opening ceremony that could be described as encompassing the best of Britain. Bid leader Lord Sebastian Coe said at the opening ceremony “London 2012 will inspire a generation. In every Olympic sport there is all that matters in life.” What followed at the Olympic venues would live long in the memory of those that took part, those that helped make it happen and those that were there to see it. On the 12th August, amid a Union Flag themed stadium, the games drew to

a close and the flame was extinguished to mark the end of the games of the 30th Olympiad. On the 29th August, the Paralympic opening ceremony took place, and when the Paralympic flame was extinguished on the 9th September, it would mark the end of London’s tenure as Paralympic and Olympic host. Until the Paris Olympics in 2024 and Los Angeles games in 2028, London will remain the only city to have hosted the Olympics three times. A decade on, the memories remain relatively fresh and we’ve been speaking to some of those involved to document their thoughts from the time, and their reflections ten years on. So, what is the London 2012 legacy in the eyes of the people that were there? THE OLYMPIAN Sebastian Prieto spent his formative years in France. At school he was the English kid, but in England he was the French kid. He was a handy handballer and played football too – he was on the books at AS Monaco as a teenager. In 2005 he was based in Crowborough, but living in central London and working for a city insurance firm. “When I heard Team GB were going to enter a handball team, I contacted the manager and was invited to a trial in Liverpool in the summer of 2006.” Sebastian impressed enough in the tests to be invited onto the squad and found a place in the team at right wing. He gave up his job, life in London, said goodbye to his family in Sussex and headed for Denmark with the squad “to focus 100% on handball.” The initial squad of 12 lived in a school and endured several training camps, “it was far from glamorous, but our team spirit was forged in adversity and it was this that brought us together.” In 2007 Sebastian signed his first professional contract at a Danish club, and he would also go on to play for teams in Norway, France and Germany. “We were funded through to 2009,” he recalled, but after that we had to help finance ourselves with whatever jobs we

could get. “At one point I was selling saucisson, salami and sausages on a stall in the Norwegian town of Halden.” As London 2012 approached the squad came together to prepare for the Olympic tournament. “We played international matches at Crystal Palace and it was great to have family travel up from Sussex to support the team.” Prior to entering the Olympic Village the final squad of 14 went to ‘kitting out day’ and “it was a lot of fun… there was so much kit.” Then it was the day of the opening ceremony. “That was a most impressive and unforgettable event to be a part of.” Almost 76 years after the sport was introduced to the Olympics, the Brits finally arrived at the party on 29th July, playing future gold medallists France. “Walking onto court, singing the anthem, absorbing the support of the crowd, the roar of 5,000 people in the Copper Box. It was amazing.” “We weren’t expected to win our group games, we were expected to be competitive and to inspire the next generation.” “The whole experience was full of highlights. I was the second highest goal scorer in the team and by the end of the tournament I was the most capped Team GB player of all time.” Sebastian loved every minute of his time in the Olympic Village, “and after we had been knocked out of the tournament I watched as many live events as I could.” Having been selected, endured the training and competed at the Olympics, Sebastian treasures his part in Team GB. “I got to go to the opening ceremony, the closing ceremony, and take part in the ‘Our Greatest Team’ parade through London. I’m very grateful for the entire experience.” In May 2013, Sebastian was invited to meet

The Queen at Buckingham Palace. He took his mum – as you do. After the Olympics, Sebastian returned to Denmark, but this time it was for love, “not the weather,” and these days he’s based in Aarhus. His soon to be wife played for the Danish national team and together they have two daughters. “I coach handball now and run an Under 8s team.” Sebastian still gets back to Crowborough, “but not as often as I would like.” Four of the 2012 squad still play for Team GB and the Olympic 2012 squad are still in touch, “We are actually trying to organise a 10-year reunion. London 2012 was an unforgettable event, a wonderful memory, 2006 - 2012 completely changed my life and I’ll be forever grateful.”

THE TORCHBEARER Georgia Hill is from Polegate and was nominated by her sister to be an Olympic torchbearer. After being selected for the relay, Georgia, who was 14 at the time, discovered her big day would be the 17th July and that she would carry the torch through Crowborough. Georgia played wheelchair sports, enjoyed athletics, and had an interest in sport. “Being nominated to take part in the celebrations for the biggest sporting event in the world was incredible, I got plenty of attention at school.” Georgia recalled the logistics of being in a wheelchair as ‘interesting’. Crowborough is pretty hilly and, “I

wasn’t able to push the route and hold the torch, so I was actually pushed along my section of the route whilst I held the flame and waved to the public at the side of the road – I felt like royalty!” “Once I had done my handover to the next torchbearer, we met some members of the public. A visiting American family were watching from the side of the road, and their daughter, who must have only been about 7 years old asked for a photo and my autograph! I’ve never done one before nor since so that was pretty special.” The feel-good factor from 2012 is still there a decade down the line. Georgia’s sister, who was in the police at the time, cycled behind the torchbearer relay in Eastbourne, the same afternoon. “Our family had a double whammy that day!” Georgia took her torch into school after her relay appearance and let other pupils – and teachers – get their photos taken with it. “It was a great talking point for my community and sometimes I like to reminisce about those days.” “I absolutely feel I was part of the history. I still treasure my ever

so... lovely... white tracksuit all the torchbearers wore – a special torchbearer top, a mini mascot and mug from 2012 and of course I will always treasure my torch.” Ten years on, Georgia remembers the summer of 2012 as being, “iconic, not only me but for our country too. The national spirit was high in celebration and it created a sense of community. And I still enjoy watching athletics today.” THE DRUMMER Sarah Fisher was a drummer in the opening ceremony, playing during the industrial revolution segment called Pandemonium. There were 1,000 drummers, and their secondary role was to marshal athletes during the opening and closing ceremonies. “My drum teacher saw an online article, inviting people to audition. I was 18 at the time and studying for A Levels. I skipped a biology lesson to audition at Three Mills Studios in London, in November 2011. There were people of all ages, from a variety of backgrounds with a range of abilities. We spent most of the time dancing.” Sarah was invited

to a recall where, “We played group beats, requiring a variety of skills, on buckets. None of us knew what was really going on, which made it all the more exciting.” In January 2012 she received an email inviting her to take part in the opening ceremony. “I was in

an A Level music class at the time, and was distracted from that point on.” Rehearsals meant Sarah missed some end of summer term social events to celebrate the end of school, “but it was an amazing summer and I wouldn’t change a thing.” The commitment to rehearsals involved time and travel, “but it didn’t feel like a chore as it was so amazing – even torrential rain didn’t put us off the beat.” Sarah found the Olympic buzz in the time leading up to the Games “heightened as Friday 27th July approached. We were around the

Olympic Village so there were athletes all over the place, stopping for pictures and chatting with people.” “The rehearsal experience, and meeting new people who are still friends today are personal highlights.” Sarah found the first rehearsal in the Olympic stadium to be “an awesome experience.” During the opening ceremony she got a hug from Usain Bolt and met Stephen Fry. Sarah watched most of the Olympics on TV, “Super Saturday was a wonderful memory.” Several athletes who made their name that summer are still well known today recalled Sarah, “and many have gone on to inspire the current generation of athletes.” During the closing ceremony, “Team GB were all around me and I chatted to the GB Handball team, Helen Glover and Mo Farah, who signed my Scout necker.” Sarah felt like she was taking part in history, “The Pandemonium section of the opening ceremony is still the most repeated part on TV, it’s slowly becoming iconic – the seven smoking chimney stacks and the forging of the five Olympic rings.” Sarah went on to enjoy the Paralympics, she received tickets to both ceremonies and went to numerous events including; athletics, swimming, goal ball

and 5-a-side football. “I have Cerebral palsy and Hyperkinetic movement disorder so I found the Paralympian athletes inspiring.” Sarah remembered Coldplay performing alongside the disabled musicians of the British Paraorchestra at the closing ceremony as, “amazing, it encouraged me to pursue a career as a musician.” A decade further on, Sarah recalled that once in a lifetime experience. “The Pandemonium Drummers are still going strong. We performed at Wembley in 2013 at the final of the Champions

League” and they also played in 2015 at her final University degree music event. The legacy of 2012 for Sarah, “was not just the spirit of 2012, but also the Olympic Park which has gone on to host numerous events – it really was the best of the British, it brought the country together and the impact has been long lasting.” THE PARALYMPIC SPECTATOR Amanda Groves is from Littlehampton, although back in 2012 she was living in Feltham. She purchased Paralympic tickets online for herself and her son, who was 12 at the time. Amanda remembers, “It felt a privilege to be there. The Paralympians were amazing. Everyone seemed caught up in the atmosphere, having a really good time; cheering on our athletes and encouraging other nations when Team GB wasn’t involved.” Amanda and her son saw Boccia at the ExCel Centre in Docklands, “it’s a type of bowls, but we didn’t have a clue until we got there. We also saw sitting volleyball and judo – the whole day was fantastic, and we did some London sightseeing afterwards.” Both felt like they were taking part in history and they would love to do it again, and see other Paralympic events. Amanda was an interested observer of the Rio and Tokyo Olympics on television, “but it certainly isn’t the same as being there. Being swept up with the emotion of seeing it live in front of you is on another level. This is something we will never forget. A great memory to have.” THE OLYMPIC & PARALYMPIC SPECTATOR Sally Birch is from Upper Beeding and she was an enthusiastic 2012 spectator. “There was lots of cheering,” she remembered. “The atmosphere was amazing, people were so friendly – we even ended up on a train with some of the German rowing team.” The Games Makers in their white, purple and red trimmed uniforms were volunteer heroes. “They were awesome,” recalled Sally, “they made you feel so welcome with their highfives, smiles and laughter.”

10th September with her friend Jacqui. She recalled, “We were lucky, we were right at the front and in front of the TV cameras although we didn’t know we were until my sister phoned to say she could see us on TV.” Mandy thought the parade was amazing. “We saw all the athletes on their open topped bus and a few celebrities as well.” Her highlight came later that day, after the parade finished. “Walking past Westminster Abbey we saw something happening across the road. It was athletes and celebrities emerging from the Queen Elizabeth II Centre. We spoke to athletes, took pictures, even touched a gold medal. Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean actually posed for me. Jacqui and I still talk about that day and how we felt so proud to be British.”

Sally’s first Olympic experience was with three friends. They had tickets to the 3m springboard diving in the Aquatics Centre. “We saw Chris Mears come 9th that day, but he got the biggest cheer from the crowd and later won gold at Rio in 2016.” Sally’s second trip was to the Paralympics with her sister and nephews. They spent a lot of time watching the big screens and “had a thoroughly lovely time.” Her highlight occurred in the lead up to the games, “I took my terminally ill Dad to see the Olympic torch relay at Lancing on 16th July with his grandsons. It’s a memory they will never forget.” Witnessing a home Olympics and Paralympics, “is a once in a lifetime experience. It’s the best atmosphere I have ever experienced. I still get goosebumps thinking about.” THE PARADE SPECTATOR Mandy Geal is from Eastbourne and she went along to the London 2012 ‘Our Greatest Team’ parade on Monday

THE DIAMOND JUBILEE SPECTATOR Liz Henty from Brighton applied for tickets to the Paralympics and the Diamond Jubilee Concert outside Buckingham Palace, but “had no idea I would be successful,” so Liz enjoyed the shock of discovering she had been successful. Her concert tickets generated much excitement. “We received an embossed invitation with our names on. What to wear was a big worry though.” Arriving at Buckingham Palace, they walked through the front arch into the courtyard, where hampers were handed out. “We were guided to the back garden and settled on the grass. Inside the hamper was a selection of goodies including champagne, and a jar of pickle that I still haven’t opened.” Liz remembered that some members of the Royal family mingled with the crowd and it was obvious it was a special day. Around 6pm they were ushered to their concert seats around the Victoria Memorial. “The crowds in The Mall added to the atmosphere, it was an amazing experience.” In August, Liz enjoyed the Paralympics, “the stadium was very well organised and the volunteers were amazing. To be part of two momentous events in one summer is something I look back on with great fondness.” l July 2022 | SUSSEX LIVING 61

Tangmere Military Aviation Museum to airmen and airwomen who gave their Tangmere Military Aviation Museum is lives in service. Pictures and video will tell situated in a corner of the old Tangmere the story of the growth of the Museum airfield, famed as an RAF fighter station from 1918 until Fighter Command left Summer in 1958. Season The Museum aims to promote public awareness of the UK’s military aviation heritage, educating visitors in military aviation. The Museum’s Falklands exhibition will run until the end of August, then beginning in September there will an exhibition to mark the 40th Anniversary of the Museum, which serves as a memorial

from its very earliest days. Now one of the UK’s leading aviation museums, it is home to an impressive display of historic aircraft with a unique collection of aviation memorabilia from the First World War through to the Falklands Crisis. ello Mummy!” piped Jarvis in the morning, a halo of mussed up blond curls and dummy still plugged firmly in his chops. “Happy birthday my baby,” I said to him, nuzzling into his sleep warm neck until he giggled and wriggled away across the bed. But he’s not my baby anymore, my boy is turning two. We all headed downstairs to the ‘birthday room’ where two tired parents tied up party balloons and bunting the night before. It’s worth it though for the look on the children’s faces when they see the table of presents and cards, shiny red balance bike taking pride of place in the middle of it all. Mia put the bike on the floor for Jarvis and showed him how to get on

it, but she hardly had a chance before he pushed her off and said, “Jarvis bike!” a regular refrain throughout the day. In fact, we could hardly get him off it at all and he even sized it up to see if it would fit in bed with him. “Well,” I said to Robin, “like father like son. Your mum told me you used to go to bed with bike bits instead of a teddy!” If I wasn’t around, I think he still would, to be honest.

Down on the cycle path all the family children gathered together on their bikes and rode, at varying speeds from snail to rocket, through the vibrant green tree tunnel. The little ones looked on as the big kids whizzed off into the distance. “It won’t be long before you’re joining them, Jarvis,” I told him, as he sat astride his bike, his confidence growing with every step. And with every fall he inevitably landed splat bang on a bird poo (large pigeons down there apparently!), showed me his pooey hands and said, “Eww!” I wonder where he got that from… Then it was back home for birthday tea and digger cake,

balloon bopping and party blowers. I managed to gulp a glass of fizz and nibbled a handful of crisps until finally, it was the end of a very busy birthday. Robin told me afterwards in the precious moments we have together before falling asleep ourselves, that just as he was dropping off, Jarvis sat bolt upright and called out for his “Bike! There’s an old adage that you can’t have a self-build that comes in on time, on budget, with a highquality finish – one of those things always has to give. Well, Mark Sewell and Eunice Locher might just have proven that wrong, converting their Scandia Hus bungalow into a detached house in less than a year for just £375,000, and all to an incredibly high standard. Returning to the UK after living in Australia and Portugal, Mark and Eunice were looking for a plot that would enable them to build an ‘open-plan, inside-outside’ home like those they had enjoyed overseas. The first thing the estate agent showed them was a Scandia Hus bungalow that had been built by its now deceased owner in the 1980s. “I stood at

the gate and said, ‘Not in a million years’,” laughed Eunice. “I was horrified. It was overgrown and neglected – and the thought of a bungalow at our age was just too much, so I kept looking.” Ten months later, she came back and, this time, made it past the gate. “It was a lightbulb moment,” she said. “It was very run down, but it was south-facing, on a lovely road, and right on the edge of the Ashdown Forest – I suddenly realised it was a winner.” Having secured the plot, the couple hired local architect Adam Penton, whose work reflected the contemporary style they were looking for, but their brief was more a list of things they didn’t want, than things they did. Having lived in Mark and Eunice the bungalow, they had come to hate the sauna-style pine cladding used throughout, were looking for the low light levels, the clipped views of an ‘open-plan, the surrounding landscape, and the boxy

layout. “Our brief to Adam was simply to transform it,” said Eunice. “We wanted something modern that was easy to live in, but beyond that, we left it up to him.” Adam’s scheme takes advantage of the bungalow’s L-shaped floorplan by connecting the two wings with a triangular open-plan living area, that opens onto the south-westerly garden, and includes a first-floor master suite. “I liked the idea of this quirky triangle thing,” said Eunice. At a pre-application meeting with the local planning department, Adam presented an ambitious plan that included everything they might ever want to do. Not surprisingly, the council raised concerns, but with a few tweaks, the plan sailed through; its first floor addition having been carefully considered with a low roofline that didn’t overlook the neighbours. Planning approved, Mark and Eunice moved into

A word from the architect: “Our approach to the environmental question is to conserve energy with passive features, before we start adding in clever gadgets. This house is insulated well beyond building regulation standards; it’s triple glazed throughout, the southwesterly facing patio doors ensure plenty of solar gain and the tiled floor absorbs all that heat and radiates it out again as the room cools. Bolt-on eco-features tend to get cut as soon as the budget gets tight, but considerations like these will stay in this building forever.” Adam Penton

Mark’s garden office, which enabled them to stay on site throughout the build. Working with Nick Weller as the main contractor, Adam oversaw the extension, which used the same stick timber frame as the original construction, clad with Siberian Larch as a foil to the original brick. The master-suite is timber-framed too, but uses steel in its roof and super-structure and is clad in zinc. morning coffee. Details such as the triangular windows tucked into the eaves add character. The original bungalow was triple-glazed and Adam continued this throughout the new parts of the building, reinsulating, sound-proofing and reskimming all the walls. “The bungalow did have some clever details, but it took Adam pointing out how cool things like the windows were for me to realise that,” laughed Eunice. “I wanted to replace the windows, but I’m glad Adam talked me around.” The addition of a separate annex tucked away at the far end of the house provides somewhere for their grown-up children to stay. When it came to furnishings, it was a case of less is more. “We were really keen that this house had no clutter,” explained Eunice. “We now just have the pieces that really mean something to us. It sounds terrible, but we even pared back family photographs. We just had so much stuff – slimming it down felt like a weight off our shoulders.” Those items the couple have kept are carefully chosen and perfectly placed; a bespoke dining table made by friends of their son, an enviable collection of mid-century furniture supplied by Mark’s brother-in-law, cushions by their daughter and art by their friends. Eunice’s muchreduced pottery collection is now artfully displayed. “I love ceramics and this is the perfect place to dot my collection around. I am constantly changing them and always thinking about how lovely they look – that means everything to me.”

Sussex is the only county in which all eighteen UK species of bat have been recorded, so we asked Ruth Lawrence to meet with Tony Hutson of the Sussex Bat Group to discover more about these elusive mammals, why they are important and how they contribute to the wider environment

knew I was at the right house because a bat themed door knocker was discreetly positioned at the entrance to Tony Hutson’s home. And before long, Tony had begun to show me some of the conservation work that has been carried out by the Sussex Bat Group, since their foundation in 1984. A most exciting recent project has been the discovery of a breeding colony of Greater Horseshoe bats in a disused stable and outbuildings in West Sussex. One of the country’s rarest bat species, no maternity roost had been seen

in the south-east for over a century and the nearest breeding colony is in Dorset. The site is of enormous importance because it has the potential to help recolonise the south-east, and reverse the national decline in this species, of up to 90%, during the twentieth century, due to roost disturbance, crop spraying and wood treatments. The Greater Horseshoe bat got its’ name from the complex horseshoe shaped ‘noseleaf’ echolocator. They often hang from a perch to catch insects, launching off to snatch their

prey in mid-air before returning to a regular feeding perch. Bats often roost in old, large, roof spaces which provide shelter from both the heat and the cold. The West Sussex site has thick stone walls and a slate roof which provides the ideal roosting conditions. The West Sussex site was purchased by the Vincent Trust, an independent conservation charity which

supports the recovery of Europe’s most threatened mammals. Fundraising is underway to begin renovation works, with the initial intention of repairing the roof, walls and windows. Future work will include predator proofing, lighting and heat, plus equipment to monitor and study the Greater Horseshoe bats. Once completed, webcams, guided wildlife walks,

Eared bat was discovered in a tunnel in Sussex in 2002, and Tony told me he turned up again this year, now aged at least 20 – and he could live for as long as 35 years. Bats are long lived creatures, despite their small size; even the tiny Pipistrelle lives for 4-5 years. A Brandt’s bat of 41 years old has been recorded, academic research and bat watching events will be introduced. Landowners across West Sussex will be encouraged to improve habitats for the (hopefully) increasing numbers of Greater Horseshoe bats across the region. Offers of help, sponsorship and donations are being gratefully received for this initiative of national importance. Sussex is also notable for being the winter home to the rarest bat in the UK. High summer is with us so we sent Robert Veitch to one of the highest points of the county, for a walk with two starting points; one high and one low. His friends Cheryl and Jo provided the company, the wit and the good looks, while all three enjoyed the superb scenery

modern temple of instant communication,” as she looked at the walking app on her mobile phone. At the smorgasbord of gates, take the metal 7-bar gate on the far left. As the surface underfoot degrades, the gradient increases on the ¾ mile schlep to the summit. “It’s quite a workout,” chuckled Cheryl, “I’m glad I had my morning porridge.” At the cattle grid the junction is made with the South Downs Way. On a clear day the views in every direction are utterly gorgeous; a panoply of panoramas creating memories to recall on a winter afternoon in front of a log fire. Turn left and ramble past the transmitters at 185m (605 feet), then over the brow along the easy walking ridge of the South Downs. One gate leads to another and into the car park, and what is the end of the walk for those that started here. Or, like us, you might be barely half way around. FROM FIRLE CAR PARK The gate on the eastern side of the car park leads towards the summit of Firle Beacon, a mile away; via an open gateway lined with Armco and then another gate.

The trig point among the tumuli, at 217m (712 feet) it is the altitudinal high point of the day and the tableau of topography in every direction should be worth the walk. Stunning Sussex scenery satiated, turn through 180° and after about ¼ of a mile, veer right by the solitary fingerpost and begin the descent proper down the chalk path. Past the fingerpost and upright sleeper, the folds in

the scarp side of the Downs add magnitude to any walk. To think how this landscape evolved over millennia is enough to make the mind boggle. A gate leads into a field of ripening wheat, the path following the periphery to the T-junction with the bridleway. Turn left and track the flint wall for ½ mile into The Street, veering left at the village shop, then along the track to the right of the pub. At the cricket ground, veer left through the kissing gate beside the tennis courts. Aim across the field, treating livestock with respect, (to the temporary metal gate in the far corner) and the kissing gate

Cross to the bus stop then take the track to the right. Veer left of the hay barn, then right and follow the left side of the stock proof fence to the gate. Across the adjacent field is a metal

beyond. Walk towards the drive, then through the white gate to the five-ways junction beside the Firle sign, and “the last of the jubilee commemorabilia,” noted Jo.

Turn right and walk north along Littledene Lane to the A27 junction. Cross over with great care; the vehicles seem unnaturally fast after the sedate pace of a walk. Follow the pavement of Lacey’s Hill into Glynde. Walkers beginning at Firle car park should turn left at the fingerpost 100m before the station. If like us, it’s journeys end, then continue to Glynde station. “I’ve earned a slice of gin and tonic cake,” grinned Cheryl, “and a life affirming cup of tea!” l

hether you fake it or bake it, getting that summer glow is a look that suits everyone. Summer sun-kissed skin speaks of relaxing days spent enjoying the great outdoors and looks the picture of health. Build your glow slowly and safely over the summer months, or for an instant splash of colour, turn to the bottle. Tan aside, it is recommended that we all get a certain amount of sunshine (5-15 mins to face, arms and hands) every day as it is filled with goodness for the body and the brain. However, it all depends on a person’s skin tone,

and low mood, which can appear in a seasonal pattern. Sunshine also gives us vitamin D, which is vital for good bone health. So, what are the safest ways to be in the sun? All things in moderation here; get your

small dose of sunlight straight to your skin, then cover up with light clothing or sunscreen. Take regular shade breaks when you are out in the sun and be extra careful during the hottest part of the day (between 10am and 4pm). Make sure to reapply sunscreen every two hours and stay fashionably protected with a hat and sunglasses. It’s really important to stay hydrated when in the sun, so drink plenty of water during the day and give your skin a big drink

Perfect for a summer lunch, this dish by Adele Trathan is an explosion of fresh and tasty flavours. Spiced, golden pan-fried chicken complements the zingy quinoa tabbouleh which is bejewelled with pomegranate seeds

SERVES

CAJUN CHICKEN with Quinoa Tabbouleh

INGREDIENTS 4 chicken breasts 4 tbsp extra virgin olive oil 2 tbsp paprika 2 tbsp garlic granules 2 tbsp onion granules 2 tbsp oregano 1 tbsp cayenne pepper 150g (5oz) quinoa 300ml (10fl oz) cold water 70g (2½oz) fresh parsley, finely chopped 30g (1oz) fresh mint leaves, finely chopped 4 tomatoes, diced 100g (3½oz) pomegranate seeds 75g (2½oz) feta cheese, crumbled 1 lemon Salt and freshly ground pepper

METHOD Using a fine mesh sieve rinse the quinoa thoroughly under cold running water. Put the quinoa and cold water into a pan and bring to the boil, lower to a simmer and cook for approximately 15-20 minutes until it has absorbed all the water. Turn off the heat and cover with a lid for five minutes to allow to fluff up. Uncover and allow to cool.

Put the quinoa in a large bowl and add the chopped parsley, mint, tomatoes and pomegranate seeds and mix thoroughly.

In a large frying pan heat 2 tbsp of 4 the olive oil on a medium to high heat then add the chicken strips and fry for 10 minutes or until cooked through, and lightly charred and golden.

To serve, add the last 2 tbsp of olive 5 oil and squeeze the juice from the lemon to the quinoa tabbouleh. Season well with salt and freshly ground pepper and mix again. Load the tabbouleh into bowls and top with the crumbled feta and Cajun chicken. Tuck in and enjoy the fresh flavours!

Summer Fruits Pie Make the most of summers berries with this delectable recipe by Adele Trathan, perfect with a dollop of fresh cream or ice cream! INGREDIENTS For the pastry: 225g (8oz) cold unsalted butter chopped into small pieces 350g (12oz) plain flour 50g (2oz) icing sugar Pinch of salt 1 large egg yolk For the filling: 800g (1lb 12oz) of berries such as strawberries, raspberries, cherries or blueberries 100g (3½oz) sugar 2 tbsp of cornflour ½ tsp cinnamon 1 egg white (for glazing) 1 tbsp sugar (for sprinkling)

METHOD Put the flour, butter, icing sugar and salt in a food processor and blitz into crumbs. Combine the yolk with 1tbsp cold water, then add to the processor and pulse until the dough comes together. Divide the dough into two, wrap in clingfilm and chill in the fridge for at least one hour or, better still, overnight.

Heat oven to 190C (170C 2 fan/375F/gas mark 5). Roll out one half of the pastry, then butter an 8” pie dish and press in the pastry topped with a sheet of baking paper and baking beans. Bake blind for 30 mins.

Remove the paper and beans. Mix the berries, sugar and pour the mixture into your baked pie base. Roll out the second batch of pastry 3 and top the pie with it, trimming to fit, and using a fork to seal the edge,

use a sharp knife to create a few slits to allow steam to escape. Alternatively, cut the pastry into long strips and lay diagonally to create a lattice effect top. Brush the pastry with the whisked egg white before topping with sugar. Bake for 30-35 minutes until crust is golden. Leave to cool as the filling will be extremely hot!

Recent years have seen a resurgence to restore and repair rather than replace, Peter d’Aguilar spoke to Bryan McAlley, founder of Chailey Repair Café about this thriving initiative that brings communities together

hat to do when one of your valued possessions breaks? Throw it away and buy a new one? Or find a way to repair it? No prizes for knowing which option is cheaper and better for the environment. But surely the cost of repair can be prohibitive? Not necessarily, thanks to the two thousand, three hundred and eighty-three Repair Cafés that have sprung up all over the world since Dutch journalist, Martina Postma, created the first one in the foyer of an Amsterdam cinema back in 2009.

During the Second World War, in response to the shortages of clothing and other essentials, the government launched its ‘make do and mend’ campaign. Today we face different challenges, in particular, climate change and the rising cost of living. By restoring essential or cherished

possessions such as furniture, clothes, electrical appliances, garden tools, bicycles, crockery and toys – the not-for-profit Repair Café initiative is making an important contribution towards saving the pounds and saving the planet. Founded in 2018 by Bryan McAlley, the thriving Chailey Repair Café is one of over 20 dotted around the county of Sussex and more than 200 across the UK. In tandem with his career, Bryan, a retired civil servant, had always been a talented and enthusiastic amateur engineer – repairing and rebuilding radios, record players and other electrical items in his spare time. Bryan’s son first brought the Repair Café phenomenon to his attention and, having first volunteered at the Forest Row and Horsham Repair Cafés, he set up the Chailey branch in the local village hall. “The demand has been so great, we have now moved to a larger site at St Peter’s Church,” Bryan explained. “We now have 37 volunteers and around 160 people attend each of our monthly sessions. Our record is 90 repairs in just 3 hours.” Each household in England generates one whole ton of waste every year, which adds up to 31 million tons in total – the equivalent of 3.5 million double decker buses. Much of our modern equipment carries the curse of built-in obsolescence, so anything that can be done to ameliorate the effects of our throwaway society is of benefit to the environment. People find themselves forced to throw out

Another interesting exercise was the revival of a Victorian motion picture viewing machine with a drum containing over 120 photos, including one of the owner’s mother on a see-saw. “Chailey Repair Café always has a very positive social buzz,” said Bryan. “We are all enthusiasts of a certain age with practical skills in many different fields. As well as the satisfaction of achieving a successful outcome, we are also promoting social cohesion in our local community. Normal service resumed in June 2021 and has been operating at full capacity ever since – on the second Saturday of each month. During the past four years, the team has tackled some intriguing projects. For instance, amongst the many teddy bears they have brought back to life, they found that one was stuffed with silk stockings from World War II. They also repaired a dress partially handmade from parachute silk by a mother, for her daughter to wear

Teddy has been contemplating the benefits of a change of scenery, and has been excited to discover how new surroundings can refresh and recharge all of us, as pawed by his human translator Helen Stockton

aving just returned from a short break, and with holiday season in full swing, it’s good to reflect on the benefits of a change of location. For various necessary reasons over the last few years, we’ve all been confined to our homes, with only our family and immediate neighbours to bark at or exchange pleasantries with, depending on the nature of those relationships, over the garden fence. And whilst many of us in Sussex live in some beautiful areas, even the most pleasing landscape can pall a bit after a while, so a change of scenery is refreshing and invigorating. We dogs, of course, have taken this to a micro-level and I like to change location around the house on a regular basis. Not for me the boredom of a desk and

a computer screen for large parts of the day. The apprentice, Bear, and I move around, usually following the sun and the positioning of a plethora of comfy beds in different spots. I like to think this adds to the quality of our napping and is something I can warmly recommend; very warmly on a sunny day as it happens! Bear and I also occasionally reside at other houses. We have our friends Ann and Peter who look after us for the day if ‘Them Indoors’ have the audacity to go out without us. We also have our holiday carers, Shirley and Paul, who welcome us into their own home if ‘Them Indoors’ selfishly decide to take a break that doesn’t involve us. Both of these

arrangements offer a refreshing change of scenery with different gardens to explore, new scents to sniff and unfamiliar dogs to greet in a manner appropriate to their breed, demeanour and a whole set of other criteria that I like to keep close to my chest. It adds a certain frisson to our encounters. And recently, we’ve gone the whole dog and moved house. We have different premises, a new village and even better, a beach less than ten minutes drive away for some refreshing walks, although I’ve learnt that you need to keep an eye on the sea, it sneaks up behind you unannounced and is not to be trusted. Then, of course, there are our holiday changes of location. We are lucky enough to have a motorhome which is a fine arrangement for dogs. Bear and I just curl up and when we awake we find we are in a different part of the country with new surroundings to explore. We take in the sights, eat the regional cuisine, bark in the local accent and generally arrive back home reinvigorated and refreshed. I hope the same is true of your holiday changes of location. l

INHERITANCE TAX Dealing with Inheritance Tax can be a complicated process, but as Lisa de Silva explains, once some of the fundamentals are understood, there may be a clearer route forward into the future

hether you agree or not with the concept of Inheritance Tax (IHT), it is a financial reality in UK law. Here we explore the rules around IHT, along with ways you can reduce the tax burden. WHAT IS INHERITANCE TAX (IHT)? Inheritance Tax is payable on the value of the estate of someone who has died. How much you pay is calculated according to the value of the deceased

person’s assets, which includes any cash in the bank, investments, property, business interests, valuable goods, vehicles, and life insurance policies. Any debts are offset against these assets and the remaining money is known as the estate. HOW MUCH IS INHERITANCE TAX (IHT)? In certain circumstances, there is no IHT to pay. Specifically, if either:  The value of the estate is below £325,000.  When everything valued over £325,000 is left to a spouse, civil partner, charity, or community amateur sports club.  When those in ‘risky’ roles, such as armed forces personnel, police, firefighters, and paramedics die in active service.

If none of the above apply, the estate is taxed at 40% on anything above the £325,000 threshold. IS IT POSSIBLE TO REDUCE THE AMOUNT OF INHERITANCE TAX? Estate and tax planning can be complicated, and it’s always advisable to seek specialist advice, particularly for large estates. Despite this, there are steps you can take to mitigate the amount of IHT you pay. These include the following: 1) Leaving a legacy to a charity – If you leave at least 10% of the value of your estate after all deductions to a charity in your will, it can reduce the rate of IHT from 40% to 36% on anything over the £325,000 threshold. 2) Making gifts – If you gift your money or your valuables there is no IHT due if you live for

7 years after gifting them. Each year you can give up to £3,000 worth of gifts to anyone you choose, and you can carry this annual exemption over for up to one tax year. If it is a wedding gift, you can gift an additional £1,000, or £2,500 to grandchildren and up to £5,000 to children without IHT. 3) Leaving your estate to your spouse – Regardless of the amount, a spouse will never pay IHT on assets left to them.

Financial fraudsters are increasingly sophisticated in how they operate 4) Using your property allowances – If you leave your home to your children or grandchildren in your will, your property allowances increase your tax-free threshold by £175,000 to £500,000. For a married couple combining their allowance, this means passing on an estate of up to £1m free from IHT. 5) Taking out a life insurance policy – Life insurance is a simple way to ensure you leave money to pay for any IHT due. If the policy is written into trust, the pay-out will not form part of your estate.

6) Giving away a home before you die – If you gift your home to someone and move out, if you live for a further 7 years, there is no IHT to pay. If you continue to live in the property, you must pay rent (at the market rate) to the new owner, pay your share of the bills and live there for at least 7 years. However, you don’t need to pay rent to the new owner if they live at the property with you, or if you only give away part of the property.

WHAT IS THE 7 YEAR RULE? There is no tax to pay on any gifts exceeding the annual exemption, including your home, if you live for 7 years after making the gift. If you die before the 7 years is up, gifts made in the three years before your death are taxed at 40%. Those made between 3 and 7 years before your death are subject to ‘taper relief,’ ranging from 8-32% depending on the number of years between the gift and death.
