All in a spin Professional dancer, doting mother and hard worker Erin Boag of Strictly fame can usually be found spinning across the dance floor with partner Anton du Beke. Tim Saunders managed to grab her for a quick chat

“I

’ve danced in Brighton at the seafront quite a few times,” says professional dancer Erin Boag, known for Strictly Come Dancing and partnering with Anton du Beke. “They have a lovely ballroom there.” Erin likes to take her young son Ewan to Brighton in the summer and buys him an ice cream at the pier. Ewan also dances. When asked whether he will follow his mum into the profession, Erin replies: “I was thinking more of a plastic surgeon! I might need that one day…” “He does a local dance class on a Saturday morning and he absolutely loves it. There are more boys in the class than there are girls. It’s a sign of the times, I think. It’s quite cool for boys to dance right now.” Working in television is all consuming and this drove Erin to make a tough decision. “During Strictly Come Dancing you are in all day everyday, seven days a week. You get sent away to where your celebrity is, so I’ve been to Leicester for two years, Manchester, Copenhagen, Peterborough, Cardiff. I couldn’t do that with a small child; they’re only young once. I retired from Strictly but not everything else. I still do the corporates, the tour and everything else because I can make that work without feeling guilty. What’s the point of having a child if you won’t be there?” Being a mother has been her priority since leaving the hit TV show. “After 10 years of Strictly the clock was ticking and I was thinking I need to start a family now. Anton was saying do another one, just do another one and then of course you’ve got the tour afterwards. I was 38 and they have a meeting with you in May where they say this is what we’re doing this year. I walked in

and said sorry. I wasn’t asking for a year out, I was saying thank you it’s been wonderful.” New Zealand born Erin arrived in the UK in 1997 with her dance partner. “After about a year here we decided to go our separate ways. Anton had broken up with his partner as well. Someone said to me you’ve got to make a list of guys that are available to dance with so I wrote a list and Anton was on it. We got together and had a try out. That was 21 years ago and we’re still dancing together today. It’s a bit like a marriage. During the tour we dance together all day every day. We do a lot of corporate shows, a lot of weekend breaks, a lot of different things. We do see a lot of each other.” Seven weeks after giving birth, Erin went back on the dance floor. “I’m very lucky I do what I love as a living. Not a lot of people can say that. I’m happy with where I’m at and that I can juggle both. Dancing, touring and looking after my son are my priorities. I love going on tour with Anton.” She doesn’t think of herself as a famous celebrity. “I’m a working mother. I’m self-employed, I don’t have to go into an office to do 9 to 5 everyday. I am on tour for three months a year. To juggle that I bring my mother over from New Zealand. She gives up her summer to come over to our bleakest of winters. So my poor mother, for the last four years, hasn’t seen a summer in New Zealand. As much as my husband is very lovely he can’t juggle work and looking after a child so my Dancing, touring and mother’s here to do looking after my son are the school run or to my priorities. I love going pick him up or to take him to gymnastics or on tour with Anton dancing, so I don’t have to worry.” “With touring you’re all over the place; it’s really hard. My mother calls it nanna time and my son thinks it’s wonderful. I did a show on Tuesday night, my husband came in and I ran out. You make things work don’t you? I wouldn’t have it any other way. You just have to be organised.” Erin tries to visit her homeland as often as possible. “The last four years I have visited New Zealand in October. Now my son’s at school I can’t do that. This is the first year I haven’t gone. My son has been to New Zealand four times already, although he went when I was pregnant so really he’s been five times. He thinks it’s very special though because he takes his pyjamas on the aeroplane. He’s great to travel with, I always find it fun – we play games on the plane.” 10 SUSSEX LIVING | February 2019

Her current tour demands that she trains hard. “For this tour I drop Ewan off at school, I go into the studio from 9am until 6pm, someone else picks him up and I train every day. I’ll get home, play with my son, read him bedtime stories, put him to bed and do it all again the next day.” When Anton’s got Strictly, training is cancelled. “It’s very hard while Strictly is on, Strictly has to come first for him and I totally understand. The days where he can, we’ll go and train.” When Erin arrived in the UK as a young dancer she had nothing. “I had to work four jobs to survive. I dreamed of having a house. When you can’t afford it it’s so difficult to get on the market and when I finally did I really got the bug for it and it’s something that Sarah Beeny inspired me to do. I don’t have a pension, I have property investment and I absolutely love doing it. I’ve just built up from there really. Start with one, rip it apart, get another and I love doing that. What I would really love to do in the future is to make a programme on how to get onto the property market, how to invest in property, how difficult it is; the ins and outs of it all. It is extremely difficult to do it. It’s becoming harder and harder and by the time my son wants a house it will almost be impossible.”

Erin started dancing as a very small child learning ballet before moving on to ballroom, Latin and jazz. She trained for a degree in travel and tourism and worked as a nanny before dancing professionally. “Good dancers are good because they practice,” she

says. “It’s all down to mental stamina. Anything at the top level you have to put the heart, sweat and tears into it.” l Erin will be dancing with Anton du Beke in Brighton this February, for further details visit antonanderinlive.co.uk

Duck Tales

Mandarin ducks are thought to be some of the most beautiful birds in the world with their striking plumage and distinctive orange sails. Peter Erridge tells us where to spot them this spring

hese ducks originate from eastern Asia and are considered by some observers to be the most beautiful birds in the world. The male Mandarins are easily recognised by their ornate plumage which is at its best in early spring. Their decorative appearance has inspired artists, ceramicists and glass figurine makers over many centuries, especially in oriental art. In Chinese and Korean culture it is believed that these ducks pair for life and so these artefacts are given as wedding gifts symbolising wedded bliss and fidelity. The orange and black plumage, the orange â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;sailsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; on

the back and a wide white band over the eye is recognisable from afar. The females are duller but still more noticeable than many other species. In their native territories due to habitat changes numbers have declined severely and in 1975 exports were banned. They were introduced into Europe in the mid-19th century. In the 1930s some escaped

from a property near Cobham in Surrey and a strong wild population is now established in that area, and then spread across southern Britain. There are thought to be around 7,000 wintering and 2,300 breeding pairs in Britain, many of which can be found in Sussex. These shy birds are mostly found on lakes and rivers where there is sheltering vegetation such as overhanging branches or reed beds. This is a habitat seldom used by other ducks and has not caused any environmental problems.

In Chinese and Korean culture it is believed that these ducks pair for life One unusual behaviour is that they perch on tree branches. Another is that they nest in holes in trees near water, normally 10-15 feet above ground. The normal clutch of eggs is 9-12 which are incubated by the female. Predation of nests by jackdaws, mink and squirrels reduces the numbers. When all the eggs have hatched the female calls

Early spring when the drakes are in breeding plumage, and the foliage has yet to emerge, is the best time to view these spectacular birds. Sites where there is a good chance to see them include: Powdermill Reservoir, 6.5 miles North of Hastings Darwell Reservoir, 9 miles North of Hastings Weir Wood Reservoir 2 miles South of East Grinstead Ardingly Reservoir 3 miles North of Haywards Heath Ebernoe Common National Nature Reserve 4 miles North of Petworth Burton Mill Pond 2 miles South East of Petworth Swanbourne Lake ½ mile North of Arundel

from the ground below the nest and the small fluffy ducklings emerge to drop the few yards to the ground. There may be understory such as bramble bushes to soften the landing. The duck then leads her tribe to nearby water and the hazards of life, including mink. Pike will also take small ducklings, whilst on land foxes are major predators.

At Weir Wood Nature Reserve careful records of the breeding of Mandarins have been kept for a number of years and show some interesting results. Nest ‘sharing’ appears to occur frequently as counts of 15-20 Mandarin eggs have been noted plus those of Stock Dove and Tawny Owl. In 2015 a total of 349 were laid

in 15 nest boxes however only a small number of fledged ducklings were seen. Careful measuring has indicated that eggs have been laid by more than one female. In 2016 deeper research on one nest box showed that out of 47 eggs only 15 were warm. The cold ones were removed and the female returned leading to 13 fledglings. l

It’s a Dog’s Life It may not be puppy love, but Rolo explains how Valentine’s Day and the joy of companionship benefits man and beast alike

ow I know I’m just a dog and I don’t have a secret sweetheart, although I’m happy to consider any distinguished lady furs who’d like to put themselves forward, but I’m aware of the imminent arrival of Valentine’s Day. Although it isn’t really intended for marriage veterans like ‘Him and Her Indoors’, ‘Him Indoors’ dutifully produces flowers and a card for ‘Her Indoors’, and the romance might extend to a ‘meal deal’ from the supermarket of choice. However, I’ve been doing some research, and St Valentine got himself into serious trouble for performing secret marriage services at a time when Christianity wasn’t popular. By serious trouble I don’t just mean ‘Her Indoors’ telling you off until your ears wilt or ‘Him Indoors’ practising some alternative names, but the kind of serious trouble that can make you lose your head… St Valentine therefore, in reality, actually embodies

the concept that you should be prepared to suffer for your affiliations, something that the greetings card manufacturers might have glossed over somewhat. Still, ‘Him Indoors’ reckons he’s suffered from ‘Junior Her’s’ affiliation with me. He could arguably make the case that ‘Her Indoors’ has perpetuated that suffering by extending dog ownership to include my apprentice, Teddy. Yet enduring the daily doings of two small dogs are nothing to the fate of poor St Valentine, so ‘Him Indoors’ really has nothing to complain about. I personally prefer to consider the gentler concept that all good relationships also

have a downside. Take me and Teddy. Now I am quite fond of him, and he, naturally, adores me, but he does have his disadvantages. Now that he has thoroughly settled in, he can be a bit cheeky in the food stealing department. I’ve also noticed, that the toys we got for Christmas, seem to have migrated in his direction. Occasionally he’s tried pinching my bed but I don’t stand for any of that kind of nonsense, or lie down for it, come to that. And I do get my own back on rainy days when he is forced to wear one of my old coats; sharing goes in both directions. It’s fluorescent yellow so all he needs is a hard hat and the local council could employ him filling in potholes, a worthy cause. Yet Teddy provides many positive benefits. He’s large and muscular by Border Terrier standards so useful as a bodyguard. He’s an outrider for my buggy, and can be deployed to bark and chase, as required, for things I don’t have the hearing or the energy to deal with myself. He amuses me with his youthful exploits and his woeful attempts to be naughty and he’s a bit of company in the kitchen. We share the same perspective, what can I tell you. So maybe Valentine’s Day should be about love in the wider sense, warts and all, which, as a senior dog, I happen to have too. What can I tell you, I’m the perfect catch! l

Sarah’s family have been keeping the people of Haywards Heath looking dapper since the late 19th century, when her great-great-grandmother used to take dirty laundry up to the spring at Barn Cottage Recreation Ground and bring the cleaned clothes back home in a wheelbarrow. “That’s how the laundry started,” explains Sarah. “My great grandma and grandfather ended up running the Snowdrop Laundry in Petlands Gardens. When my parents took over the family business, my dad decided that people wanted somebody who could take care of all their clothing – a complete valet service, not just dry cleaning. That’s a philosophy we continue here today.” With state-of-the-art dry cleaning facilities housed beneath the stylish little shop – as well as a clever wet

The shop stocks a shoe care range, complete with insoles, shoe cream and waterproofing treatments. ORANGE CHURROS with hot chocolate Now, neither the churros, nor the hot chocolate actually need each other as both are pretty wonderful in their own right, but the combination of the two is a knockout and perfect for serving as a naughty treat for your loved ones. Breakfast, brunch or even after lunch – whenever everyone needs something hot and sweet INGREDIENTS For the hot chocolate 1.5 l (2½pts) milk 500g (1lb 2oz) dark, semi-sweet chocolate, broken into squares For the orange churros – makes 10 70ml (3floz) water 25g (1oz) unsalted butter, plus extra for greasing 25g (1oz) plain flour, sieved Pinch salt 1 small egg, lightly beaten 1 tsp orange oil (or extra zest) 1 tsp orange zest Vegetable oil, for deep-frying 2 tblsp icing sugar METHOD Heat the milk and chocolate in a pan over a low heat until the chocolate has melted, for about 10 minutes. Increase the heat a little, but don’t let it boil, and whisk until frothy. Keep hot at the side of the stove.

Make the choux pastry by putting the water 2 and butter together in a small pan over a low heat. When the butter has melted, bring the

water to the boil, remove from the heat and add the flour and salt at once. Return the pan to a low heat and stir vigorously with a wooden spoon until the mixture cleanly leaves the sides of the pan, for about 3-4 minutes. Add the orange oil and zest. Remove from the heat, cool a little before adding the egg and then beat until you have a smooth, glossy mixture.

Heat the oil to 350f/180c. Pipe the choux 3 pastry into the oil in 10cm (4”) long loops, only 3 at a time. Turn them once and cook for about 1-1½ minutes, until crisp and golden. Drain on kitchen paper and dredge well with icing sugar. Pour the hot chocolate into glasses and serve immediately with the churros to dip.

Whether used for political authority, religious symbolism or secret communication between lovers, Flo Whitaker brings us the language of flowers and their long and fascinating history

e have always been captivated by flowers. The Old Testament is full of botanical references and flowers have appeared in sacred art since pre-Christian times. Royal occasions are heavy with floral symbolism, flower motifs appear on ancient coats of arms and Shakespeare mentioned over 50 different plants in his plays. This reminds us that the language of flowers was once a part of everyday life. Their significance is mostly lost now, but some themes have passed down the ages and are still with us. Red roses have always been associated with ‘pure’ love, whereas exotic orchids and sultry red tulips indicated burning desire and passion. A Victorian gentleman seeking the hand of a lady might receive a secret

posy of rose foliage – without flowers, giving the indication, ‘you may hope’. Rosebuds were associated with themes of innocence and childhood; a rosebud posy was considered an appropriate gift for a mother with a newborn child. Departures, good or bad, were highly significant events. When embarking on a long journey; ‘lucky’ white heather was worn as a talisman. If you had been a guest at someone’s home, you might send your host a thankyou posy of sweet peas as they indicated ‘a fond farewell’, and a bunch of forget-menots requires no explanation. Flowers associated with

mourning have a sombre poignancy. White lilies are the biblical flower of purity, but also of grief. Their complicated symbolism bears witness to the cycle of life - you are just as likely to see them used in a wedding bouquet or a funeral wreath. Sweet violets, soberly dressed with their deep green leaves and gothic purple flowers were a favourite at Victorian funerals. No advertising agency could ever come up with a logo more powerful than the remembrance poppy. These short-lived

The humble paper remembrance poppy speaks for us all. It knows no social boundaries and is just as likely to be worn by a homeless rough-sleeper – or the Queen. The language of flowers is a complicated one. It’s not just the type of flower that matters; it’s the colour too. In this regard, yellow does not generally fare well. Blue hyacinths, with their overtones of faithfulness and constancy, make a charming posy – but beware a gift of yellow ones, as they signal jealousy. Marigolds may appear cheerful, but they represent cruelty, yellow carnations indicate disappointment or despair and yellow lilies hysterically scream, “I hate you!” Worst of all are yellow chrysanthemums, for they spell ‘tainted love’. Hmmm… Did you assume that the giving and receiving of flowers was a charmingly innocent pastime? Better go and check that Valentine’s bouquet – just in case… l

Stunning new Winter Garden at Wakehurst A stunning new Winter Garden has been planted at Wakehurst in Ardingly, West Sussex. Launching on 23 January 2019, the garden is the perfect place to chase away the winter blues the rich fragrance of Daphne and witch hazel, placed close to path edges, will make you smile as you breathe in their perfume. You will also love the texture and colour that comes from massed blocks of Cornus (including the cultivars ‘Midwinter Fire’ and ‘Bud’s Yellow’), succulent bronze Bergenia and soft, feather-like Calamagrostis and hellebores. Swathes of cyclamen, grasses, snowdrops and crocuses will also compete for your attention. At certain parts of the Winter Garden you can see nothing but plants and sky

– you will feel completely immersed and cocooned by nature. Take a seat on the large, locally crafted, curved oak bench, and find the perfect place to relax. The garden was designed by Wakehurst’s Horticulturalist Francis Annette, who took his inspiration from the South Downs. Francis explained: “My thought process began with the word ‘wild’ – after all, we are Kew’s wild botanic garden in Sussex. I wanted to create a feeling of expanse and openness as experienced in many winter landscapes, and for there to be open vistas that allow the eye to see through and beyond. He added: “I noticed that in nature the visual impact comes from large numbers of only a few varieties of trees and shrubs– less is most definitely more.’ The Winter Garden is a great place to draw inspiration for your own garden – or even window box. As you leave refreshed, uplifted and rejuvenated, you will be inspired to give your garden at home an injection of winter passion!

Long nights and dull, cold winter days – it’s enough to give anyone cabin fever! Once the temperatures drop, it’s so easy not to make the effort to leave the house unless you have too. But, if you are brave enough to pull on a warm coat and scarf and head outside, you will be richly rewarded. Exercise, especially in a beautiful and natural environment, has been shown to lift the spirits, clear the mind, and make you feel relaxed and refreshed. And this is exactly what garden designers set out to do when planning the new Winter Garden at Wakehurst. Planted by horticulturists and volunteers in early 2018, the beauty of the Winter Garden is now emerging – shimmering bark, soft foliage and rich scents. As you set off on the winding path, you will encounter an incredible 33,000 plants across 5,500 square metres. Flowers and shrubs are woven together with mature trees, creating a stunning blast of colour against a wintery landscape. Mature Himalayan birch trees (Betula utilis var jacquemontianii) take centre stage. Their dramatic white trunks rise resplendent to the sky and are interspersed with the coppery gleam of the Tibetan cherry (Prunus serrula tibetica). Within this canopy,

KEMP TOWN ENCLOSURES

emp Town Enclosures were laid out in the 1820s for the benefit of the residents of Kemp Town Estate, and were then developed by Thomas Read Kemp, a property developer and politician. Despite being instrumental in creating the glorious Regency terraces which are today so much a part of Brighton’s heritage, Kemp was obliged to flee Britain in 1837 to escape his creditors and died in exile in Paris, in 1844.

The gardens, which cover 3.24 hectares (7.5 acres), are owned collectively by the freeholders of the 105 Grade I listed houses that make up the estate. They were originally landscaped in the Regency style in 1828 by local horticulturist Henry Phillips, assisted by surveyor Henry Kendall. More than 20,000 plants – including semimature trees and shrubs – were ordered and gravel paths laid to fulfil Phillips’ master plan. A tunnel connecting the gardens to the Esplanade, and Brighton’s famous seafront, was added in around 1830. A sign on the wall of the tunnel still claims a Constable is on duty, “to keep the place free from the intrusion of all Persons whose conduct or appearance seem to justify their exclusion.” The bell with which he could be summoned is no longer there; neither, indeed, is the Constable. The tunnel is also rumoured to have provided inspiration for the rabbit hole in Lewis Carrolls’ Alice in Wonderland. Carroll (the Reverend Charles Dodgson) often visited Brighton to meet his friend,

the Reverend Henry Barclay, who ran a boys’ prep school at 11 Sussex Square, facing the Enclosures, sometime between 1871 and 1888. Among other distinguished visitors were William IV and Queen Adelaide, and later Victoria and Albert, who enjoyed walking in the gardens on their visits to Brighton. The entire garden was set aside for the exclusive pleasure of King Edward VII when he was convalescing in Brighton and staying with his daughter, Princess Louise, the wife of the Duke of Fife, at 1 Lewes Crescent (now Fife House) in 1908. The lavatory specially installed for the convenience of the King in Fife House is still extant. The changing style of the gardens after the Regency period was driven by a desire to embrace the new and exotic plants which became available in the late 19th century, brought home from around the world by British plant hunters exploring the world’s fauna in the wake of the expansion of the Empire. The gardens today provide an oasis of tranquillity for those fortunate enough to possess keys and their guests. It’s clear from the first glance through the front door that this home belongs to a citizen of the world. Exposed brick walls in the bathroom at the end of the hallway hint at years spent living in New York. The earthy tones of the sitting room and study just to the right suggest South America. However, although she is clearly a traveller Laura’s favourite style is vintage English. She is also a home lover at heart, never happier than when she’s in her kitchen cooking up a feast for gathered friends and family. In fact, it was the basement kitchen that sold the house for Laura, or rather the wall in the middle of the room. “The exposed brick around the wood burner reminded me of my mother’s kitchen on our farm in Argentina,” she says with her soft South American lilt. “I thought, ‘I need to have this house’. Nothing else mattered. That wall felt like the heart of the house.”

Perhaps not surprisingly, given that she grew up on a polo pony farm, Laura collects horses

That was in 2000; Laura was looking for a renovation project in Brighton having relocated from America, and back then the house looked very different. “The outside was yellow with a navy front door – it looked like the Swedish flag,” remembers Laura. Inside wasn’t much better. The walls were blue, the entire house was carpeted in red and dado rails had been painted bright yellow. Even the original fireplaces had been painted crimson. “That’s why I got it so cheap,” she laughs. The previous owner had lived in the house for 25 years, and since its construction in 1896 only

four families had called it home. This meant that everything needed complete restoration, but it also brought some unexpected treasures. When Laura initially looked under the carpets, the first Christmas after moving in, she was thrilled to find original floorboards in near perfect condition because they had always been covered. Throughout the house, only five boards needed replacing and Laura sourced them from a house demolition nearby so they fitted in perfectly. In what is now the red bedroom, she found 1912 William Morris wallpaper when stripping the walls, although sadly its condition was too poor to be saved. To begin with, Laura painted every wall white. “I do it every time I move in somewhere new,” she explains. “I like to let the house breathe,

“My bed looks wooden but is actually metal,” says Laura. “I bought it in a French car boot sale. It was already painted, and my builder made new wooden slats.”

It takes longer but it always looks better in the end.” When Laura wanted to bring colour back into the house, she started with the blue and red bedrooms. Once stripped of paint, their original fireplaces were in good condition. Laura bought striped bed linen, then chose Toile du Jouy wallpaper, which she hung. “It was tricky getting the patterns to line up, but I was really pleased to have done the rooms myself,” she remembers. The rooms quickly filled with her collections of cherubs and pictures, and a special place

For the ground floor main bathroom, Laura called in a local builder. Things got off to a bad start when a gentle tap of the ceiling caused it to collapse on his head, requiring hospital treatment for him and a new roof for the bathroom. “But we are still friends,” says Laura. “He came for two weeks, and ended up working here for a year. One project just rolled into the next.” In the ground floor sitting room and study, Laura chose darker tones to create what she calls, “my Argentinean heart.” “My friend’s laughed at me when they saw it,” she remembers. “They said it looked like a cigar room for a gentleman’s club. But it’s my secret place, the only room in the house that isn’t feminine. It’s where I go to read in the leather chair.” In 2009, Laura decided to convert the loft into a third bedroom with en suite bathroom. The previous owner had used the space as a darkroom, so even though it lacked stairs, the floor was boarded. Working with a local building company Laura designed a loft conversion that doesn’t feel like one. “I wanted big windows on one side to avoid the typical triangle shape,” she explains. “Adding the Juliet balcony really opened up the room, and means I now have views across the park to the sea.” The kitchen was the last project – and possibly the biggest. “I had no cooker for two months,” says Laura. “That was very hard because I love cooking.” Laura wrote ‘kitchen closed’ on her little blackboard during the work, then the builders replied with ‘Laura’s kitchen is open’, when they had finished. Now, just as she imagined when she first bought this house, the kitchen is its soul once more. l

One of Goring’s most astonishing features is in the English Martyrs Catholic Church. It contains the world’s only hand-painted reproduction of the Sistine Chapel Ceiling painted at 2/3

lthough Goring dates back to Anglo Saxon times, it was only incorporated into the Borough of Worthing in 1927; it has however retained its own character and is now one of the most popular residential areas in Worthing. The 19th century brought the railway and an extended name of Goring-by-Sea to distinguish it from Goring-on-Thames; the name succinctly describes the town’s ideal location right on the south coast with miles of shingle beach to enjoy. The town has a unique natural splendour which dates from the 19th century

size to Michelangelo’s original. Local artist Gary Bevans had been to Rome on a pilgrimage when he was 33 and, on his return, and after discussions with Bishop Cormac, his request to reproduce the world famous ceiling was granted. Taking 5 ½ years to complete, the trained sign writer and artist spent evenings and weekends meticulously copying not only the complex Biblical scenes and figures but also the entire architectural background. The overall effect is breathtaking and Gary deservedly received a special medal from the late Pope John Paul II for his work. Visitors can view the ceiling from April 1st when it opens again to the public and take advantage of the fact that this ceiling is 30ft nearer the ground than the original so that every detail of the 3500sq ft work can be enjoyed. Just a few streets away, St Mary’s Church boasts a stunning mural of its own, painted in the early 1950s by a German Jewish émigré artist called Hans Feibusch. After the war, he became known to Bishop George Bell of Chichester who believed that modern artists should portray the images of

HOW LOW CAN YOU GO? Are you looking for a gentler workout in 2019? Sasha Kanal explains all about the gentle new trend of low intensity movement that could be just the answer

IIT (High Intensity Interval Training) has been a big success story in fitness circles now for a long time. However, for 2019, LISS (Low Intensity Steady State) training could be the gentler, less brutal alternative you’ve been looking for. LISS is a low intensity cardio workout that calls for approximately 30-60 minutes spent working out at a fat burning mode of about 60 percent of your maximum heart rate effort. There is a school of thought that suggests this method is better as your body (especially your joints) is less prone to strain and injury. Apparently it’s the steady pace of exertion for an extended period of time that can promote oxygenation of cells, increase blood flow and kick start the process of weight loss. Experts also say that those undertaking LISS are also more likely to stick to this steady state of training, rather than something seen as more ‘painful’ such as HIIT. One of the best things about this approach is that, outdoors or in, it’s easy to do and relatively accessible to all. Workouts or activities that enable you to do this include:

It works more of your body than most other cardio machines and is very low impact, meaning those of varying fitness abilities can easily access it. ACID REFLUX EXPLAINED

Gastroenterologist Dr Keith Hine discloses the symptoms, causes and possible treatments of Gastro-oesophageal Reflux Disease

he oesophagus (gullet) is the muscular tube that connects the back of the mouth to the stomach. It is about 15 inches in length. After swallowing, food is pushed down the oesophagus by waves of peristalsis - these are rhythmic contractions of the muscles in the wall of the oesophagus. At the lower end of the oesophagus is the cardiac ‘sphincter’, which is a circular muscle that acts as a valve and helps to prevent the stomach secretions getting back into the oesophagus. If this sphincter is weakened, gastro-oesophageal reflux may result. Gastro-oesophageal Reflux Disease (GORD) is the commonest cause of indigestion in the western world with 30% of the population experiencing significant reflux (heartburn) at least once per week. What causes GORD? Some people are born with a weak sphincter. In others, the presence of a hiatus hernia, where a small part of the upper section of the stomach slips up through the diaphragm, may cause the reflux. Being overweight may increase the pressure inside the abdomen and encourage

reflux. Various dietary constituents, such as fats and spices, could also reduce the tightness of the sphincter, as do some drugs. Strong alcohol may aggravate the symptoms by irritating the inflamed lining of the oesophagus. Clinical investigation may not be required in younger patients with typical symptoms. However, when the first symptoms occur after the age of 55 years or if there is any difficulty in swallowing, investigation is essential. Usually the investigation of choice is

endoscopy but sometimes a barium swallow may be ordered. What is the treatment? Some people respond to simple measures such as losing weight, avoiding heavy meals shortly before going to bed, and sleeping with their head raised in bed. Lying in bed on the left side is also helpful since the body of stomach, which is mainly on the left side of the abdomen, becomes a sump to hold the gastric contents. If these simple measures fail to control the symptoms some medication may be helpful. Antacids could help to relieve the heartburn and they are more effective if combined with an alginate which forms a raft on the top of the stomach contents. These alginate/antacids are available over the counter and your pharmacist can advise. If further treatment is required, drugs called ‘H2 receptor antagonists’ or ‘proton pump inhibitors’ both reduce the strength of acid produced by the stomach. Once again, many of these are available over the counter in small doses but if they are required in the longer term or in a larger dose you should consult your GP. Your GP may also decide about surgical intervention which is necessary in the small proportion of patients with GORD in whom medical treatment proves ineffective. l

Elizabeth Kay offers Sussex Living readers her thoughts on recent reads that have caught her attention. She gives her views on a selection of books from different genres which may capture your interest sixteen. Nevertheless, she does write extremely well and the characters leap off the page. The book is set in Wolverhampton in the 1990s, before the age of social media. The TV series was updated to the present day, which made it somewhat anachronistic as that’s a hard jump to achieve successfully. The ending of the book is a bit of a disappointment, but a clear lead-in to a sequel. How to Build a Girl is funny, occasionally shocking, and painfully honest about the experience of being a teenage girl. Those of you of an older generation may remember Groupie, by Jenny Fabian and Johnny Byrne, published in 1969. The rock world was just as outrageous in those days – perhaps even more so.

The translation by Antoinette Fawcett, however, is exquisite. Len was a violinist, and after an unhappy love affair with an artist she came into an inheritance and bought a cottage in Sussex. She was enchanted by the birds that visited her garden, and they became so tame that they flew in and out of her house, perched on her shoulder, and took peanuts from her fingers. She started to study them properly, giving each one a name and observing them in as much detail as Jane Goodall later studied her chimpanzees. This flew in the face of contemporary behaviourist thought

This is an attractive-looking book for pre-school children, to be read by a parent. The baby carrots grow up nice and chatty, but the local rabbits get wind of them and invade the vegetable patch. Freddie the Fox is the local policeman, and he is called in to arrest the rabbits. They promise never to do anything like that again, and everyone is happy. Other than, perhaps,

Robert Veitch and his cousin Louise Prieto set out to explore the hinterland of Heathfield. Join them on their ramble over the old railway line and across field and woodland

rom Newnham Way car park head south along the Cuckoo Trail. Ever so slightly downhill, it’s easy walking along this former railway line. There’s a pair of metal gates at the junction with Harley Lane and safety barriers precede the crossing of Old Ghyll Road. Shortly after is a nod to the past, a tip of the station master’s hat to the Cuckoo Trail’s previous incarnation. ‘Frenches Halt’ is definitely worth pausing for. “So impressive,” noted Louise, “I love the signal.” It’s easy to imagine how things might have been a century ago; puffs of steam and squealing brakes as the 5:15pm from Waldron and Horeham Road slowed in readiness to stop at Heathfield station. At the next junction, cross Ghyll Road using the Pelican Crossing, rejoining the trail on the corner of Treetops Way. A milepost marker precedes the crossing of Runts Farm Bridge. Then it’s under the bridge at West Street Lane. 250m later peel off to the left, before the bridge over Tubwell Lane. Walk up the hill to the junction with the B2203.

Fallen trunks and multitudes of exposed roots precede the intersection known locally as ‘five ways’ Cross the main road carefully, ambling downhill into Sicklehatch Lane, all the way to the bridge over Waldron Gill. 75m beyond the bridge turn sharp left into Sapperton Wood. Once past the metal gate bear right at the fork, and follow the path north, hugging the barbed wire on the right, heading in the same general northerly direction at the fingerpost. It’s a little soft in places amongst the chestnut trees, but it firms up as holly supersedes the chestnut. Fallen trunks and multitudes

of exposed roots precede the intersection known locally as ‘five ways.’ Head north, indicated by the ‘Wealden Walks’ sign, over the fallen silver birch towards a pair of stiles, 100m apart. A short jaunt uphill leads to a wooden 5-bar gate. Beyond the gate and a wooden shed, is a stile on the right. Over this, the path leads downhill diagonally across the field into the hedge and a stile. Keep right in the next field, wandering downhill to yet another stile. Once over this, turn left, then right, following the track across the dam, keeping Old Mill Pond on the left. Turn right at the bird box by the wooden gate, then across the field towards the drive. Follow the drive uphill, turning left onto Nettlesworth Lane, then 30m later crossing the stile on the right. In the distance is the spire of All Saints Church, Old Heathfield. A glorious sight whatever the weather. “That’s so beautiful,” eulogised Louise. “I’m so glad I’ve come out on this walk.” There’s a rather wobbly stile to clamber over, but overall, it’s a lovely uphill jaunt to the kissing gate in the iron fence. Turn left and amble to the end of the drive, to the junction with Church Street. Turn left and walk downhill, on the right of the road towards any oncoming traffic. After 200m bear right into Weaversbrook Lane keeping the sandstone perimeter wall of Heathfield Park on the right. Where the road turns sharp right, the path heads into the woods by the black and white chevron. After the stile the going underfoot may be squelchy and sticky along the left side of the field

all the way to the next stile. Keep left in the next field, all the way to the following stile, then downhill to the bridge. Once up the steps created by exposed tree roots keep going to the broken, disused stile. Turn right onto the tarmac drive and follow it for almost half a mile to the junction with Sandy Cross Lane. Turn left and walk to the main road. Cross carefully and trot down the steps. Then wander downhill to rejoin the Cuckoo Trail at the Old Ghyll Road junction, hopefully looking reassuringly familiar. Turn right and head north. Suburbia returns suddenly as the back gardens of Heathfield populate all views. Back at the car park it was time to reflect… “This was time well spent, such lovely surroundings, I found a new kind of love,” smiled Louise, “…walking around Heathfield!” l Distance: 5¼ miles Walk Time: 2 hours and 20 minutes Stiles: 9 Map: Explorer OL25 Refreshments: Take your own, or treat yourself in Heathfield Parking: Free parking at Newnham Way car park
