INTERVIEW
SOBER ROCKS! –Who Knew?
Would your life be better physically and emotionally without alcohol? That’s proved to be the case for Janey Lee Grace. Having been concerned about the amount she was drinking, Janey ditched the booze three years ago. She regaled Lisa de Silva her story, along with the joys of living alcohol-free
W
ith a lifelong interest in all things holistic, Janey is a mine of information on living a natural lifestyle and even wrote a book on the subject, Imperfectly Natural Woman. “I’ve always joked I’m a more realistic Gwyneth Paltrow, but my drinking was always the elephant in the room. I always laughed about being totally natural, while still loving my big glass of Sauvignon,” she explained. Perhaps best known as a regular on Steve Wright in the Afternoon on Radio 2 and The Wright Stuff on Channel Five, Janey began her career in the music industry as a backing singer with Wham! Now married with four children, it was when the children were young that her drinking really ramped up. “I bought into that whole ‘mummy wine’ culture. I was exhausted, working hard and looking after the kids and started to use alcohol as a treat. It was my adult time. I wasn’t doing anything unusual, it was what most people did,” she noted. Gradually though, Janey began to feel that her health was suffering. She felt bloated, tired and was regularly waking up at 3am with a sense of panic. “I think it was my unconscious mind saying to me that something is wrong here – that all this drinking just doesn’t fit with who you are.” At the time, Janey described herself as a grey area drinker. She wasn’t alcohol dependent, being able to stop for periods of time, while pregnant or ‘detoxing.’ Yet during periods of abstinence, the focus would always be on when she could get back to drinking again. Yet all that changed in December 2017, when Janey was given a copy of The Sober Diaries by Clare Pooley, to read over Christmas for Radio 2. PHOTOGRAPHY BY AMANDA CLARKE
January 2021 | SUSSEX LIVING 9
“I left it a while before reading it because I just knew it would have an impact on me and when I did start reading it, the book was very relatable,” confided Janey. Written by a mum whose drinking had also ramped up, Janey recognised herself in Clare’s distress and all the reasons why she needed to stop. The big difference for Janey was reading about the benefits of ditching booze and how much better Clare’s life was without alcohol. “That was the key for me. I’d never come at the problem from that perspective. In the past I’d just been white knuckling it until I could have a drink again. Clare’s book made me sober curious – could my life
be better physically and emotionally without alcohol?” Not one to make life easy for herself, Janey stopped drinking on December 30th 2017, initially embarking on dry January and then setting herself a target of staying sober for 100 days. Since then, she has never looked back and while it hasn’t always been easy, the driving force was Janey’s changed mindset. “I’d caught sight of a completely changed life and everything being better,” she told me. “But it was extremely tough and really quite miserable for most of the first six weeks because I didn’t prepare to quit properly. I now realise what I could have done to make the transition smoother for myself.” Janey suffered with poor sleep, leg cramps and skin problems. In the past, she would have reached for a drink but without that option, confessed she often felt utterly miserable. What kept her going were the moments where she could gradually see aspects of her life improving, “Everyday something got better.”

Such was the positive impact of living alcohol-free, Janey founded The Sober Club, to introduce people to the joys of sobriety and help them make the transition as smooth as possible using all the lessons she has learnt along the way. The website has lots of valuable tips and strategies, with the options for membership and one-to-one coaching from Janey herself. For the sober curious, Janey suggests exploring the role that alcohol currently plays in your life. So, when you reach for a drink, ask yourself what feeling are you trying to create. “I used to think of wine as self-care,” she laughed. “But it’s not that toxic liquid that we want, we want the feeling that it gives us. When you get your head around that, the penny finally drops and you realise there are healthier ways of getting that feeling that won’t end up killing you.” While the actual physical effects of alcohol leave your body within a few days, it’s this change in mindset that is key to long term success. So, explore the role alcohol plays in your life and focus on other ways you can fill that role and create the feelings that you’re looking for when you drink. Self-care is another crucial element during the early days of sobriety.
Ensure you don’t feel deprived by pimping up an alcohol-free drink of your choice, with a beautiful glass, crushed ice and berries “I’d also suggest people keep a gratitude list and write down all the little changes and things you’re grateful for. If it’s tough in the early days just push through and if you need to go to bed at 7pm, who cares? Over time you
PHOTOGRAPHY BY AMANDA CLARKE
Janey encourages her clients to see this period as recovery time, to eat really well, read ‘quit lit’ to motivate you and connect to others so you can share your journey. “One of the biggest things is connection. You have to get connected with other people because you’ll find all the issues that come up for you, have come up for others. So, in the early weeks when I was getting leg cramps, someone could have suggested I try a magnesium bath.”

orange juice or coke. You can have a fantastic artisan tonic, alcohol-free beer, wine, sparkling wine, cider or mocktail. There are also artisan botanicals for former spirit drinkers. It’s brilliant, there’s so much choice.” While life has improved in every way for Janey, she has two major bugbears. One is sober shaming. “Drinking is so ingrained in our culture that you’re often considered ‘odd’ if you don’t drink. I would love to live in a world where it’s as normal not to drink as it is to drink. It would be great if it was just like being a vegetarian. Having

will become so much more resilient.” And when it comes to those occasions which are synonymous with alcohol, like special occasions, meeting up with friends or just sharing a bottle with a partner, Janey’s advice is to, “Keep the ritual. Change the ingredients.” Ensure you don’t feel deprived by pimping up an alcoholfree drink of your choice, with a beautiful glass, crushed ice and berries. “Becoming sober would have been much harder ten years ago,” Janey admitted. “But today you no longer have to sit there with your sad little
said that, I think things are changing among the younger generation and they are drinking less.” The second issue involves the issue of grey drinkers. Like most people, Janey was not alcohol dependent but had broached the subject of her drinking on various occasions during visits to her GP. “Whenever I felt confident enough with my GP, I might say at the end that I was a bit concerned I might be drinking too much. GPs should realise that it takes a lot for someone to say that and alarm bells should ring.” Yet in her experience, after a brief discussion about consumption levels, most GPs will class the amount as normal and recommend trying an alcohol-free day or limiting your intake in some way. “People in this situation need help, not a doctor’s permission to carry on.” If Janey has awakened your sober curiosity and inspired you to ditch the booze, do check out The Sober Club and her podcast Alcohol-Free Life. Janey also has a new book out, Happy Healthy Sober on February 11th. As Janey pointed out, “Every day gets better. Literally everything improves over time – your physical, mental and emotional health.” l www.thesoberclub.com

How to achieve ‘2020’ vision in 2021 By Mr Gok Ratnarajan Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon Director of Innovation Eye Clinic Head of Glaucoma at Queen Victoria Hospital, East Grinstead
I
t is 2021 but that is no reason why your vision should not be 2020. I hope this guide will give some advice and tips to keep your eyes healthy.
Prevention is better than cure... get your eyes tested regularly Routine sight tests at your opticians will not only help improve your vision but could also detect diseases that can lead to sight loss such as glaucoma and macular degeneration. Early diagnosis is the key to preventing sight loss from these serious
you out of glasses altogether and your Ophthalmologist will advise you if you are a suitable candidate.
You are what you eat? but unfortunately relatively common eye diseases, this is especially important if eye disease runs in your family.
What is a cataract and how is it treated? A cataract is when the lens of the eye becomes cloudy leading to blurred or faded vision, as well as glare and haloes. Modern cataract surgery is quick and painless with a very fast visual recovery. I often tell my patients that cataract surgery is a chance to reset your vision to fit your lifestyle. Premium lens can get
A balanced and healthy diet is important for so many aspects of your general health and your eyes are no different. A diet rich in greens and vegetables should provide the necessary vitamins and anti-oxidants you require. Oily fish and some nuts and seeds such as walnuts and flaxseed are a good source of omega 3 and this is important for eye health and could also help with dry eye. With a balanced diet, there should not be a need for vitamin and anti-oxidant supplementation but your Ophthalmologist may
suggest these for specific conditions such as dry macular degeneration.
Give your eyes a break Staring at computer screens or smart phones can lead to sore and dry eyes. I would advise you take regular breaks and perform 5 slow and strong blinks. This helps reduce dry eye but you may also benefit from using lubricant drops particularly in the morning and evening when your eyes are at their driest.
UV light It is certainly advisable to invest in a good pair of UV blocking sunglasses as cataract and retinal damage can occur with excess exposure.
Until end of February, Mr Ratnarajan is offering a £150 discount to any Sussex Living reader who wishes to have a consultation. His office can be contacted on 0800 005 3335 or info@innovationeyeclinic.co.uk
WELLBEING
NEW YEAR The start of any new year is a chance to reassess our health and look to where we might improve. This year it is more important than ever, as 2021 dawns amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, Lisa de Silva explores how we can help ourselves.
O
ver the past year we’ve explored various aspects of wellbeing to help bring greater balance and satisfaction to our daily lives. Building on this, over the coming months we will
feature a series of health-related articles designed to help you optimise your physical, psychological and lifestyle habits. Here we introduce the key elements which will help to keep you fit, relaxed and positive during 2021.
PHYSICAL HEALTH General Activity While many of us may commit to a formal exercise programme, simply raising our level of daily activity is a great way to improve physical health. Adding more walking, cycling or gardening can all boost fitness. But if the weather is too wintry, doing some housework, enjoying a kitchen disco or taking an online class can also keep our hearts pumping and our spirits lifted. Strength & Bones In the same way our muscles strengthen with exercise, so do our bones. As bone density decreases with age, the risk of osteoporosis increases and the best way to counteract this is with regular exercise. Try weight-bearing and resistance exercises which encourage you to work against gravity. These include lifting weights, resistance bands, stair climbing and power walking. Balance & Posture Poor posture can be a cause of lower back pain, neck and shoulder tension, poor digestion and even headaches. January 2021 | SUSSEX LIVING 17
Good posture will improve these ailments along with your core balance and stability, important to help avoid the risk of sprains and falls. While both yoga and Pilates are excellent ways to increase balance and improve posture, some simple balance exercises, such as standing on one leg will also do the trick.
PSYCHOLOGICAL HEALTH Sleep Essential to our survival, sleep benefits our functionality and performance. When we sleep our bodies have a chance to repair and relax. This applies to both physical and psychological recovery, giving our bodies a chance to restore and our minds a break from constant chatter. One of the main pillars of health, a good sleep routine is an essential element of our wellbeing.
To keep work from spilling into your private life ensure there is a clear delineation between the two
18 SUSSEX LIVING | January 2021
Mindfulness Anxieties and worries are often fuelled by thinking about the past or projecting into the future. Mindfulness is about bringing yourself back into the present moment to bring a sense of calm. It simply requires you to fully engage
your senses in the present moment, for example drinking a cup of tea. Instead of listening to any raging thoughts, use all your senses to become aware of the warmth, taste, colour and fragrance of the tea as you enjoy it. Afterwards you will feel much calmer.

Meditation Meditation is akin to mindfulness in that it involves focusing the mind on a particular thought, activity or object to bring calm and relaxation. All sorts of activities like walking, losing yourself in music, crafting or cycling can be meditative, but perhaps the easiest way to meditate is to simply focus on your

breath as you inhale and exhale. While your thoughts may wander, just practise bringing them back to your breath. Relaxation Being able to switch off negative thought patterns is important to reduce stress and increase our quality of life. There are many ways to do this, including sociable activities with friends or hobbies you enjoy alone. You can also benefit by getting involved in community clubs and projects. The main thing is to find things which help you to switch off and relax.
LIFESTYLE HABITS Nutrition Good nutrition is based on plenty of fruit, vegetables, high quality carbohydrate and protein. Similarly, cooking from scratch, avoiding an excess of caffeine and sugar in our diets will also help us to maintain our health and a suitable weight. Hydration is also vital particularly if exercising, so do ensure you drink a regular supply of water.

Alcohol Consumption While many of us enjoy celebrating with alcohol from time to time, when we drink to excess it can lead to heart disease, cancer, infertility, cirrhosis of the liver and damaging mental health issues. We can minimise the risk by limiting alcohol to less than 14 units a week, which is 6 pints of beer or around one and a half bottles of wine. Dealing with Stress If we are constantly beset by feelings of stress, the strain on our bodies and
minds can lead to high blood pressure, heart disease, anxiety and depression. To minimise this, try to identify the causes of your stress and see if you can address them. It also helps to build a strong support network, eat a healthy diet, find a relaxing hobby and use physical activity as a natural mood booster. Work/Life Balance Working long hours under relentless pressure will result in burnout and reduce your ability to be productive.
So, it’s important to take regular breaks, talk to your colleagues and managers about any difficulties and work towards mutually beneficial solutions. To keep work from spilling into your private life ensure there is a clear delineation between the two, which can be difficult if you’re working from home so, keep the day structured, have a specific area of the house for working and at the end of the day change your clothing, take a shower or practise some self-care to mark the transition from work to home. l

Pilates, the Reformer and Personal Training 1-1 TRAINING
Individual sessions for individual needs. 1-1 Pilates training is all about you and your goals. Perhaps you have plateaued at the gym, are suffering from recurrent injury, understand the benefits of exercise but do not enjoy it or would like to find an antidote to a sedentary lifestyle. Having a 1-1 is an effective way of making rapid change. Recurrent injuries are often caused by repeatedly overloading and stressing the musculoskeletal system. This is the same of those suffering from long standing back and neck problems. Changing the way you move, while you are improving strength and flexibility, would help alleviate this. If you exercise regularly so have good strength and mobility but find that you are not able to improve performance it may be due to inefficient use of the trunk ‘core’ muscles. When the Pilates method changes how you move and engages your trunk muscles differently, the benefits are immediate. Looking and feeling good should not be underestimated either.
PILATES
Pilates enhances performance! Whether you are an athlete, cyclist, swimmer or dancer, a hill walker, dog walker, gardener, a non exerciser or simply want to get out of bed without pain and stiffness, then having flexibility, fluidity and timing of movement is essential. The Pilates method is effective by changing how you move, it concentrates on alignment and ‘lengthening’ the body to reduce muscle imbalances and over loading of joints, ultimately improving physical health. It can be as challenging as you want and the unexpected bonus is that the concentration required during a Pilates session is relaxing! Within weeks of starting you will notice that your stomach is flatter, your muscles feel more toned and you will feel more agile and supple. People often feel taller as
their spine is stretched and straightened. Your everyday posture will improve as you strengthen the body’s central core muscles, helping you to stand more upright and hold your upper body correctly.
THE REFORMER
Here at our Pilates studio we advocate the benefits of the Reformer. It is such a clever piece of exercise equipment designed by Joseph Pilates to enhance the benefits of his training methods. It is based on springs and ropes – for both resistance and assistance – thus encouraging flexibility and strength during the same session or class. The Reformer is effectively used with personal Pilates training (1-1) and in small classes
REAB PILATES STUDIO

MONEY MATTERS
SEEKING FINANCIAL ADVICE Whether you’re John Maynard Keynes or Mr Micawber, managing your finances is one of life’s unavoidable priorities as Peter d’Aguilar explains
S
o, what are the main financial questions to ask yourself? What am I worth overall? What’s my income? What are my outgoings? How much should I invest to achieve my short and
long-term goals? When do I want to retire? How much should I put aside for a rainy day? And, perhaps most importantly, who should I go to for advice? Someone reputable, obviously. It is vital to find the right financial advisor to suit your needs and circumstances. Look for a personal recommendation from a satisfied client or advice from a professional body - such as a bank, solicitor, accountant or the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). A good financial advisor should have the knowledge, experience and insight to

help you plan ahead successfully. Before hiring one, however, it’s important to check out their qualifications, track record, independence and fee structure – don’t be afraid to negotiate. It’s also good to pick someone on your wavelength, as trust and empathy go hand-in-hand with sound advice. You should ask to see their professional certifications and testimonials from their clients. Are they restricted in that they are tied into specific investment companies or specialist products, or independent and therefore able to give advice based on a comprehensive and unbiased analysis of the market? Do they charge by the hour, by the project or are they on commission? Above all, always make sure your financial advisor abides by fiduciary standards - the legal obligation to act in your best interests. Even if you are financially savvy and know your way around investments, mortgages, equity release, life and health insurance, pensions, tax and inheritance planning, it can still be useful to have a financial advisor to act as a sounding board or second opinion. l

THE HOUSE Unusual knapped flint panels and a classic Sussex coursed cobblestone wall pile on the character at Sarah’s house.
S
arah Dinwiddy has come to believe that, like a woman of a certain age, a house seems to know what suits it best. Her West Sussex town house was built in the Napoleonic era and she had impressive plans, including a bright feature wall in one room. However: “I tried it and the house just didn’t seem to like it; the colours were all wrong and things I thought would work just looked awkward,” she says. Today the property is at ease with itself, a stylish blend of vintage, antique and bargain finds, where rooms flow seamlessly, linked by Sarah’s ability to curate beautiful objects, her love of fresh flowers and her abiding affection for the colour grey. However, when she and husband Mark, arrived things were very different. “The previous homeowners lived abroad and they had rented it out to these young guys who had turned it into a real party house; they had even ridden their motorbikes around the ground floor,” she extols. Sarah and Mark looked beyond the motorbikes and the dated 1980s décor to the property’s many fine qualities. Sarah explains, “It had four bedrooms, with large, square rooms over three floors and amazing period features including a wonderful inglenook fireplace.”

I tried it and the house just didn’t seem to like it; the colours were wrong
Crucially it also had a kitchen large enough to accommodate a sofa and a garden with a big tree, in which they could build a treehouse for Conrad, their youngest child. They had already decided that these two attributes were essential in any new home. “We were living in a cottage with Conrad and our two older sons were coming and going and, at times, it felt as if we were bursting at the seams,” remembers

Sarah. “Even though we viewed this house in the dark and couldn’t even get into one of the bedrooms as it was locked because it contained the owner’s possessions – we made an offer and it was accepted.” The couple set to work, moving the kitchen from what is now the dining area and knocking through into the old playroom which had been built with a vaulted ceiling to accommodate a pantry that had been added during a major upgrade the property had gone through during the 1920s. Because of the Grade II listing they had to gain consent for many of their plans, including the removal of a set of cupboards so they could create an en-suite for their bedroom. Sarah took time to research the history of the house, learning that the distinctive flint outer walls may have

been knapped by prisoners from the Napoleonic wars. “Apparently it’s the same as the work on the stables at Goodwood House and there’s talk that they may somehow be linked,” she says. What they did learn was that the reason the property is surrounded by 1920s and 1930s housing is because a previous homeowner had sold off the orchard to pay for renovations, including the addition of the pantry. Sarah is happy to admit she and Mark “ just went round and round, upgrading bits as we went along”, but she began to realise her original choices looked wrong. “Because of the enormous inglenook in the sitting room, everyone said I should go for a really large sofa to balance it so I bought one made from leather and fabric which immediately looked out of place,” she remembers. When her brother discovered he couldn’t fit his two new Chesterfield sofas into his home a few years later, Sarah was delighted to take them from him, in a move which transformed the ambience of her sitting room. Another welcome improvement was the erection of a false wall to create an entrance area and make the house warmer. “With a listed house you can put things in if they can be removed so we bought this beautifully-shaped door and Mark got a carpenter to build a slightly wonky wall around it, which looks as if it’s been there forever,” she says. After her initial experiments with colour failed, Sarah realised the house would respond better to much more subtle shades and traditional palettes. It was a light-bulb moment. “Everything seemed to look good against more historical colours and so I started looking out for older, more relaxed pieces that work so well in this house,” she says. At first, she bought for her own home but as friends began asking her to hunt down furniture and accessories for them, she realised there was a demand and started up her own company. This prompted yet another change in her life – the building of a conservatory on the side of the dining area from where she held quarterly sales of the pieces she had sourced. These days she no longer runs the business but enjoys working in a lovely lifestyle shop - Rosie Rose in Chichester. She also contents herself with enjoying her home and filling it with beautiful flower arrangements which is her final style trick for making a home inviting and charming. “Fresh flowers work especially well,” she says. “I love them because they bring the whole place alive.” l Text: Faith Erkersall Photos: GAP Interiors/Colin Poole

HOUSE & HOME
COSY
January doesn’t have to be gloomy after the Christmas decorations come down, it can be the ideal time to revamp the home as Adele Trathan explains
W
hen the last bauble is packed away into the attic, I often marvel at how uncluttered and spacious everything looks and feel inspired to give the room a bit of a makeover. It’s surprising that something simple like moving the sofa and television to alternative positions can create a different perspective and change the mood of the room. Plus, it’s fun to experiment with the layout. A fresh coat of paint will always breathe new life into any room. Current trends are for natural and neutral tones that create a peaceful and welcoming environment. Think of clotted cream and buttermilk for a lighter, brighter look, or aim for earthy shades such as sage green, taupe and grey to cocoon yourself in warmth. Add a stylish pop of colour with soft furnishings and accessories which can be changed seasonally to create a different ambience.

HOUSE & HOME
A WALK ACROSS THE ROOFTOPS Most people don’t spare a thought for their chimney, how it came to be, how it came to work and how it might have been cleaned in years past. We asked Robert Veitch to smoke out a little history, and to make it interesting. You be the judge.
A
chimney is known in the trade as an architectural ventilation structure. Its purpose is to remove airborne pollutants from buildings. In centuries past, timber framed single room buildings of any reasonable size were known as hall houses. Residents, would eat, sleep, and socialise in one room. At the centre would be a hearth, an open log fire that was the solitary source of heating and the only place to cook. These buildings had a simple hole in the ceiling to enable smoke to exit.
Timber framed wattle and daub smoke hoods were an improvement but were not particularly efficient and rooms could become smoky. Ridding the room of smoke while keeping the heat inside led to the development of the chimney. The Romans had shown innovation by embedding exhaust tubes into walls of their buildings, though it wasn’t until the 12th century before a similar structure was first introduced into domestic homes.
Parge was a mix of sand, lime, animal hair and cow manure Early chimneys were simple affairs, timber-framed and covered with plaster or mud and by the 17th century they were commonplace. Wood gave way to stone and brick; by the end of the 19th century brick manufacturing was mechanised. Building construction also progressed. Timber framed single room dwellings evolved into multiroomed brick structures, with a fireplace in almost every room. But, it took more than a hollow brick tower to make the smoke go away. For that an efficient flue was needed.
The flue is the internal space within a chimney, linking the fireplace to the chimney pot. Its purpose is to draw or convey smoke and noxious gases out through the top of the building. The internal volume of a flue needs to be relative to the volume of the fireplace. It was those wonderfully inventive Victorians who finally mastered the flue. Standard houses of the era had a fireplace of 18” (45cm) by 22” (56cm) with the flue containing an internal volume of 8” x 8” (20cm x 20cm). In percentage terms, 15% proved to be the most suitable ratio; this created the stack effect, which is upward airflow, consistently drawing pollutants and unwanted air upwards. Traditionally, flues were lined with a material called parge to protect the brickwork and prevent gases escaping. Parge was a mix of sand, lime, animal hair and cow manure, all applied as a render. Parging stopped in 1965 when building regulations changed. Initially clay replaced parge, but as building regulations became stricter, concrete and metal flues took over. For all new homes with a chimney, a flue lining is compulsory. In older homes flues linings can be retro fitted. The Victorians had a fireplace in most rooms of the house and flues would be stacked within a tower.

A myriad of chimney pots emitting lines of rising smoke A series of flues within the same tower is a chimney stack. The divider between flues in a chimney stack is called a withe and could be as thin as half a brick. Modest homes had pairs of chimney stacks that merged within the roof space. Grand homes like ‘Chequers’ had several chimney stacks. Atop the stack, atop each flue, was a chimney pot. Chimney pots were developed to increase the height of the flue in a simple way without raising the roof height. Pots positively affected airflow and updraft from the fireplace. Not satisfied with mastering the flue, the Victorians also created the most beautiful ornate chimney pots to adorn
their buildings. Chimney pots today are fairly routine functional tapered cylinders, but for the Victorians they could be round, square, many-sided or even sculpted; plain, decorated, or indulgent, they were statements for some well heeled folk. For many, the chimney pot wasn’t quite the summit as there was a need to go a whisker higher. To people of a certain age, mention the word cowl and they think X-Factor and a man with unusually high-waisted trousers. For those in the know, the cowl on a chimney pot is a device that increases updraft, reduces downdraft, acts as a rain guard, and prevents birds nesting inside the chimney pot.
Cowls are made of metal, clay, or both. Some spin, some are static, some are conical, some are half-pipes, some H-shaped, some even resemble a jousters helmet. Meshed cowls prevent birds entering the chimney and also function as spark arrestors, preventing burning debris entering the open skies. Cowls on oast houses were large and rotated with the breeze as the kiln beneath dried hops. A walk across the rooftops of urban landscapes a couple of generations ago, would have witnessed a myriad of chimney pots emitting lines of rising smoke across the sky… A panorama reminiscent of the opening credits from

the formative years of Coronation Street. Chimney maintenance remains as important now, as it was, way back when. By modern standards the lot of a Victorian chimney sweep was an appalling exercise in legalised slavery and general abuse. Boys usually started at six years of age, suffering hideous conditions, sweeping the soot as they climbed unaided, up and down inside the flue. Sometimes a fire was lit to hurry them up; sometimes they became trapped in the stack. Sweeps became caked in carcinogenic soot. Few lived beyond
middle age and many died of ‘chimney sweep cancer.’ The ‘Chimney Sweepers Act’ passed through Parliament in 1875 and effectively outlawed the use of child chimney sweeps. A walk across the rooftops these days would witness smog free views, less smoke and cleaner air thanks to the ‘Clean Air Acts’ of 1956, 1968 and 1993. Sometimes, politicians do get it right! l

HOME TRUTHS LOCATION: Tunbridge Wells THE OWNERS: Annelise and Adam Penton, who have two sons Sam and Joe PROPERTY Detached new build with 4 bedrooms and 2 Bathrooms SIZE OF HOUSE 200sqm – cost per sqm around £1,000
The new house has been designed as two wings, angled to make the most of the sun and views

nnelise and Adam Penton are both architects who met at college and now run their own practice. They had renovated a number of properties for themselves in the past, but had never previously built their own home. “We were living in a rented house and looking for a project when we viewed a condemned chalet bungalow that was ripe for demolition,” says Annelise. “After years of moving from place to place, we took one look at this plot and knew it was somewhere we wanted to settle.” The south-facing site covers more than an acre, and stands at the end of a lane on the edge of woodland but still close to local amenities. Planning permission had already been obtained to build a replacement house, and despite having an extremely tight budget, Adam and Annelise calculated that they could afford to build – but only if they tackled virtually all of the physical work themselves. “The old bungalow was damp, covered in undergrowth and infested with mice,” says Annelise. “Adam gave the building a quick makeover and we moved in with our son Sam, who was three at the time.” Located in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the plot is heavily contoured with southfacing slopes and planning constraints influenced the siting, volume and ridge height of the house.

Adam and Annelise worked together on a design that orientates the major living spaces towards the south and west, where they benefit from solar gain as well as superb views over the garden and woods beyond. “The original design of the house that had been granted consent on the plot wasn’t to our taste. It didn’t have a single window overlooking the wonderful view, which we needed to rectify,” explains Annelise. “Creating various models helped us to experiment with light and shadows during the design stage to bring in as much natural daylight as possible.” The resulting four-bedroom property is split into two distinct sections, with separate pitched roofs that resemble modest semi-detached properties externally, but the building has been detailed in a contemporary fashion. The northern wing stands on the site of the old bungalow, and the southern wing has been twisted to face due south, which opens up a wedgeshaped space between. This junction forms the entrance hall, stairs and a partially double-height dining space projecting out into the garden. Split levels on the ground floor, with vaulted first-floor ceilings in the bedrooms and

High levels of insulation, coupled with an airtight construction, mean there is no need for a boiler or heating bathrooms, enable the house to follow the contours of the site and remain within the planners’ height constraints. “We lived in the bungalow for two years, but it really was falling down, and when our second son Joe was born we bought a mobile home for the garden, where we stayed during the two-year build,” explains Adam. “Not only did we need to gain planning permission for our design but a bat survey had to be organised before we were able to demolish the old property.” The discovery of two bats hastened the start of the project, as the tile hanging on the cottage needed to be carefully stripped away prior to the roosting period. Two new bat boxes were integrated into the replacement house. “Our neighbours were really supportive of the plans and the design of the main property was passed by the planners without comment, but our detached garage drew far more attention, which meant tweaking the pitch of the roof,” says Annelise. The construction is all timber, with preweathered zinc cladding to the roof and the single-storey utility room. A large shed in the garden served as Adam’s workshop during the build, where he

spent many hours cutting timber to make up wall panels. Concrete strip foundations with concrete piers were designed to accommodate the timber structure, raising the house above ground level with a void beneath. This is meshed to prevent animals from entering and it is from this void that air is drawn for the ventilation system of the whole house. Adam employed a carpenter to help with the workload during the first three months of the project. The timber frame walls were erected in a matter of days and then clad in vertical planks of hard-wearing Siberian larch, which have been left untreated. Sliding doors were made to order as was the striking oak front door. The flooring is also oak and walnut was used for the kitchen worktops, the offcuts of which were used to clad the staircase. “Our budget was tight but we wanted some key features so there’s a red wall of storage in the kitchen and a curved suede-clad wall in the hallway, which is covered in children’s handprints,” says Annelise. Solar hot water panels have been discreetly incorporated on the southfacing roof. High levels of insulation, coupled with an airtight construction, mean there is no need for a boiler or heating. has never been switched on and a feature wood-burning stove was also installed that can be rotated between the living and dining areas and is fuelled using locally sourced timber. “Life in the mobile home meant we could take turns with childcare, working and building,” says Annelise, who did the majority of electrical wiring, made up the flat-packed kitchen cabinets as well as tackling the painting and building work. In addition to building the house and garage, the couple later excavated a pond, which is connected to a spring-fed stream that rises in the woods behind. “We wondered about harnessing this stream in some way, but unfortunately the technology and maintenance proved too costly,” says Annelise. “But hearing the sound of the water is very relaxing in what would otherwise be a completely silent setting, and we enjoy the garden just as much as the house itself. Now we can appreciate the views from inside our home as well as out which gives us a real connection to the beautiful landscape.” l GAP Interiors/Bruce Hemming/Debbie Jeffrey/Penton Architects

BLOOMING TIMES
THE TASTE of Summer Nothing says ‘summer’ more than homepicked fruit. Raspberries are easy to grow – and now’s the perfect time to plant them, writes Flo Whitaker
T
here are many raspberry varieties to choose from, including early, mid-season and late croppers, enabling you to have a succession of fruit over a long season. Some varieties have the common decency to be thornless, others will cope with shade and there are several types with yellow berries that are apparently supersweet. I confess I’ve never grown yellow raspberries as my inner pedant screams, “Nooooooo! Raspberries should be red,” but you’re doubtless more sensible than me, so why not give ‘em a go? Raspberries are longlived plants and will often crop for 10 years or more, so take the trouble to make a sturdy support frame using 2.5 metrehigh tanalised fence posts. Position them in a line at 2 metre intervals and hammer firmly into the ground. Attach three lengths of horizontal galvanised wire to the posts, (the bottom wire needs to be about 30 cms above soil level) and position the plants approximately 40 cms apart, adding general-purpose fertiliser to the soil. 76 SUSSEX LIVING | January 2021
Summer raspberries bear fruit on mature ‘canes’ (stems), produced the previous year. Select the strongest ones and tie them to the front of the wires as they grow, spacing approximately 10 cms between each cane. Remove weak-looking stems, or those that are smothering their neighbours - don’t be greedy, good air circulation will help keep the plants healthy. As the canes start to bear fruit, look out for new ones to take their place the following year, tying them behind the wires to keep them separated from
the fruiting canes at the front. Using this method, it’s simpler to access and remove the mature canes when they’ve finished fruiting, leaving the new ones to grow on for next year. Unlike their summer cousins, autumn varieties produce fruit on canes that have grown the same year, so their pruning and training requirements are super-easy. In February and March, simply cut all of the previous year’s growth down to ground level and tie in the newly emerging canes as required.
Some raspberry varieties have the common decency to be thornless Raspberries don’t have to be cultivated in rows. If space is limited, hammer a post into the ground and position three plants around it. Allow half-a-dozen canes per plant to develop, tying them loosely to the post as they grow. Cut away surplus shoots at ground level. Some varieties, (notably autumn fruiters) have a bushier habit and require minimal support, making them ideal for this growing method. Raspberries can also be grown in a large container, such as a half-barrel. Add water-retaining leaf mould to the potting mix and top it up with a thick mulch to lock in moisture and suppress weed growth. However you grow them, be sure to fix birdproof mesh over your plants well before the fruits ripen - otherwise crafty blackbirds will scoff the lot! l

footpaths, old boundaries or sightlines for ploughmen. A group of hollies is called a ‘hollin’ and appears in place names such as Hollingbourne in Kent. The name holly comes from an old English word meaning prickly and has nothing to do with ‘holy’. Christians associate holly with their religion; the spines on the leaves representing the crown of thorns and the berries the drops of blood shed at the crucifixion. According to Churchwardens’ records, holly and ivy were used to decorate churches from the 15th century. The association

was strengthened in the early 19th century when German members of George III’s household brought Christmas trees indoors. In 1841 the press reported Queen Victoria had a Christmas tree and brightened the scene with glossy leaved, red berried holly. Thus, a tradition was born, although it was initially seldom seen outside wealthier families. Holly wood is very hard and white; these two properties finding favour with furniture makers or in marquetry as with Tunbridge Ware. It accepts dyes readily and with black dye can be used as a substitute for Holly Blue

There’s a lot more to holly than spiky green leaves and a few red berries, so it’s over to Peter Erridge to explain all things historical and all things prickly

ossils indicate ancestors of holly existed around 50 million years ago. The Druids considered holly to be a sacred plant with a strong place in their belief system; as a symbol of fertility, eternal life, and protection against lightning strikes. The wood of holly was said to repel evil spirits when used as doorsteps. Druids also hung holly indoors to assure them that spring would come. For Druids, cutting down a holly tree was thought to bring bad luck. species of holly, including trees, shrubs and climbers. They occur in temperate and tropical climates and grow in most soils except wet and poorly drained, preferring acid soils. Hollies are hardy and adapted to the shade of woodlands, creating an understory. Along the west coast of North America they
have spread into the native forests and are regarded as an invasive species. Their thick leaf surface helps reduce water loss when the ground is frozen. Being rich in nutrients holly is often grazed by animals and until the early 18th century farmers used it as a feed. Above grazing height leaves tend to be smooth. The larger shrubs and trees with dense foliage provide shelter from harsh weather for cattle and birds. Few diseases or pests affect hollies although the caterpillars of Holly Blue butterflies feed on the leaves. Folklore relates a heavy crop of berries to a forthcoming hard winter, when in fact the density of berries depends on the number of pollinating insects at flowering time. Readers should know of Ilex aquifolium, the English holly, with dark green spiny leaves. However, there are many cultivars some with a variable number of spines, or no spines, and some with

NATURE
THE RSPB BIG GARDEN BIRDWATCH 2021 The UK’s biggest citizen science project has been recording the winners and losers in the garden bird world for over four decades with the help of half a million people, and now the RSPB is counting on Sussex residents to join in too, writes Becca Smith
S
et to enter it’s 42nd year this month, the RSPB’s biggest campaign, the Big Garden Birdwatch, runs from the 29th to 31st of January and combines over 40 years of records to monitor vital bird trends. People across Sussex are set to get involved, spending just an hour of their time recording the birds and other wildlife found in their gardens, balconies or nearby green spaces, and submitting their results to the wildlife charity. This last year, we’ve seen how important the natural world is to our mental health and wellbeing. There has been a surge in interest in the nature on our doorsteps and many people have come to rely on garden birds to bring joy and comfort in these unsettling times. That’s why the RSPB is hoping to see more people than ever take part, after over 16,700 Sussex residents took part last year.
Both across the country and here in Sussex, house sparrows topped the rankings in the RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch results last year, despite wider national decline. Meanwhile, starlings and blue tits joined house

sparrows to form the top three most sighted birds in Sussex. A common garden bird thanks to the provision of winter food and nest boxes, blue tits are on the rise across the country, with an 8% increase in the population since 1979. Other birds featuring in the area’s ‘top ten’ were chaffinches, dunnocks and long tailed tits. Seeing a positive change across Sussex gardens, long tailed tits were found in 14% more gardens in 2020

compared to previous years. These charming birds, with distinctive pink grey and white feathers and long tail, are usually found in large flocks of up to 20 birds and often make use of garden feeders throughout the winter – so be sure to look out for them this year. Allowing the RSPB to monitor similar bird trends across the country, the data collected during the Big Garden Birdwatch will create a ‘snapshot’ of bird numbers across the UK and how they have faired since the project began over 40 years ago. A great opportunity to connect with nature and help with the RSPB’s work no matter how much you know about garden birds already, the RSPB will provide a free Big Garden Birdwatch guide, which includes a bird identification chart, top tips for your birdwatch, RSPB shop voucher, plus advice on how to help you attract wildlife to your garden, for those who text BIRD to 70030 or register at www.rspb.org.uk/birdwatch l

During winter, birds are more likely to come into our gardens to seek sanctuary and food in order to survive. With the Big Garden Birdwatch around the corner, now is one of the best times of the year to attract your local birds with the help of feeders. Providing food like fat balls and crushed peanuts can help birds to build up vital fat reserves and boost energy, while meal worms are great for insect eaters such as robins and starlings. Seed mixes also provide for many birds with their vast array of calorie-rich contents, or you could pick out a few favourites such as sunflower and nyjer seeds which contain beneficial oils and proteins. Feeding birds doesn’t have to
break the bank either, as kitchen scraps will also be readily Great Tit enjoyed by our feathered friends. Mild grated cheese, soft fruits, cooked rice and pasta, porridge oats and unsalted bacon are all suitable for birds to enjoy for example. At this time of year, a supply of water is also essential, and if the weather turns cold, birds can become more dependent on water provided in gardens. Making sure your water source remains clean and un-frozen is important in allowing birds to bathe and preen themselves too. To help improve birds’ chances of survival through the colder months, the RSPB has plenty more top tips on feeding garden birds which can be found at www.rspb.org.uk/birdwatch

WALK
It’s 2021 and it’s time for new challenges. With that in mind we set Robert Veitch the tough target of entertaining our Editor Adele Trathan with an interesting and entertaining walk located around her hometown of Uckfield – somewhere she knows very well
W
alk to the far northwestern corner of Luxford Fields car park, beyond two bollards into Belmont Street, then past Holy Cross Church along Church Walk, to the junction with Church Street. Turn left, then almost immediately right, into Pudding Cake Lane. “I’ve never been up here,” exclaimed Adele. The lane quickly condenses into a footpath bordered by a metal handrail, leading downhill to the junction with Manor Way. Follow the path opposite to the junction with The Drive. Cross over and continue uphill. Ignore the path on the right, ignore the path on the left, and continue between the fence panels, before turning sharp right and walking to a pair of wooden barriers. Beyond these, pass the sandstone
outcrops and climb the 17 steps into Downland Copse. After 50m take the footpath on the left by the lamppost, which leads to Snatts Road. Turn right and walk along the pavement for 250m, before turning left by the green footpath sign. Walk downhill between the fencing of Paygate Wood on the right and the barbed wire of Budlett’s Wood on the left. Continue to the junction with the gravel drive at Buddlett’s Common. Cross over and follow the green line slithering between the crumpled brown ferns. Follow the path into the woods and across the boardwalk, then to a bridge and stile. Aim across the paddock towards the telegraph poles and stile.
After the wooded peacefulness, the A22 feels more like the M25. Cross with care to the stile opposite, then across the field to the track. Bear right, diagonally and downhill, past the fingerpost to the bridge. Once across Shortbridge Stream, amble uphill to the kissing gate. Veer slightly left and advance uphill, before angling right by the two majestic Scots Pines. Beyond the gorse clump is the southern corner of Maresfield Recreation Ground. Aim diagonally across the rec towards the High Street in the far corner. Turn left at the road and follow the pavement around the bend, past St. Bartholomew’s Church to the roundabout. Turn right; beyond the wooden barriers the route heads steeply downhill, to emerge at Underhill. Follow the road through the S-bend past Underhill Lake, then over the green tinted bridge and past the red post box. At the junction, continue along Millwood Lane, over the A22 and past the houses, to the junction with Court Lane, A272 and monkey puzzle trees. Bear left and walk to the bench by the crossroads at Coopers Green. Cross to the right then 50m later cross again, towards the white gate. January 2021 | SUSSEX LIVING 87

Top tips for shopping safely THIS New Year With the festive season behind us and a new year to look forward to, we can all get back to shopping safely and confidently in Wealden. Nothing beats shopping on the high street which is lined with independent stores that can’t wait to welcome you back. But if you’re still feeling a little nervous about shopping in person, that is perfectly natural. After all, it can be stressful trying to remember and abide by all the rules and regulations.
HELP KEEP OUR COMMUNITIES SAFE
Rest assured your local high street is continuing to work hard to keep you as safe as possible. Read about what retailers, cafés and restaurants are doing to help you adjust to a new way of shopping.
HOW CAN I SHOP SAFELY? Mask up: Whether you’re going out to the local supermarket or just popping out to buy a few stamps, you should see all your friendly high street staff in masks and visors. It makes sense to keep masks in your bag or pocket, so you know you’re always prepared. Sanitise for safety: Keeping your hands clean is vital in order to keep everyone safe, wherever you are. If you don’t carry hand sanitiser, don’t let that keep you outside in the cold. Inside every shop there should be areas where you can sanitise your hands. The majority will be positioned at entrances and exits, and some even have handy foot pumps, so you don’t need to touch anything you don’t want to. Follow social distancing signs: It remains more important than ever to keep your distance from others and this is vital when you visit the high street. There will be plenty of signs displayed around your local high street to direct shoppers, so do your part and follow them too.
Power in numbers: Don’t worry about crowds, you aren’t likely to experience the same kind of packed stores you were once used to. Many shops will put strict limits on how many customers can be inside the premises at one time, so you can browse to your heart’s content and still feel safe. Support your independent shops: If you’re still struggling with the idea of getting back to your town or village high street, never fear! Your local independent shops, cafés and restaurants are excited to have you back and need your support to survive, so as long as everybody is sensible and remembers “hands, face, space”, there is no reason we can’t enjoy supporting our favourite businesses no matter where we live. So start making a list and checking it twice. Whatever you want to do – shop, browse or pop in for a take-away coffee – a warm welcome awaits you. Shop well in Wealden!

Thank you for your continued support in shopping locally A very happy 2021 from everyone at the Orchards ‘saviours’. They’ve worked tirelessly and delivered to hundreds of households who couldn’t venture to the centre. Mark, Donna and their team are an excellent example of what makes the Orchards a unique, welcoming shopping destination.
May we take this opportunity to thank our customers for their generosity, enabling us to continue donating fruit hampers to the care homes in and surrounding Haywards Heath, as well as the many drops to the Princess Royal Hospital throughout the first lockdown. The teams of Marks & Spencer, Tesco Express, Orchards Pharmacy, Holland & Barrett and Superdrug have been hero’s to the community and kept the centre open throughout. Quality Fruits have been inspirational this year, or as the Town Mayor, Alastair McPherson and his wife called them,
We’ve missed the smiles our events bring and we’ve certainly missed the outstanding performers, from Dance with Emily and the Carey School of Irish Dancing, to the school choirs. We are extremely fortunate to have these opportunities to bring the community together and showcase the incredible talent here in Sussex. We hope to bring the entertainment back as soon as it’s safe to do so.

KEEP FIT WITH THE KIDS It’s not easy to juggle fitness and childcare – but according to Hanna Prince, by combining the two you can keep everyone happy.
Most kids are happy to pootle around on their bikes for unlimited time periods. The only challenge you might have is keeping up. There are plenty of brilliant places to run and cycle around Sussex, including the seafront between Saltdean and Brighton Marina, Cuckmere Haven, the Forest Way, the Worth Way, the Downs Link and the Cuckoo Trail.
I
t’s tempting to spend winter glued to the couch, but getting active can ease winter blues, boost vitamin D levels and improve the whole family’s health. Here’s how to kick off a winter of fitness-focussed family fun. GO RUN-CYCLING It’s unlikely you’ll convince your tabletobsessed seven-year-old to go for a run – but what about heading out for a fun cycle while you jog alongside them?
Turn a fitness-boost hike into something more imaginative by taking on the roles of different characters from a story
START A SPORT TOGETHER Picking up a new sport is a great way of getting fit and having fun while you do it. Don’t let winter weather put you off – even outdoor sports such as tennis, basketball, netball, rugby and football can be enjoyed all year round. If your kids are fans of scooting, skating or cycling, there are some excellent free skate parks and pump tracks

around Sussex. Newhaven, Horsham, Crawley, Eastbourne and Burgess Hill all have top-class facilities for wheelbased sports that are open to all ages. Feeling adventurous? Try climbing or bouldering, either at an indoor facility or at one of the Southern Sandstone climbing areas at Groombridge, Eridge or East Grinstead.
WORK FITNESS INTO YOUR ROUTINE If your kids have a regular time for homework each day, why not begin with a short fitness routine? Spending ten minutes together skipping, hula hooping or just dancing to crazy music will put them in the right frame of mind for some school work (and it makes for
great-quality family time too). Familyfriendly fitness videos are also a great way to get everyone moving. SWAP WALKING FOR QUESTING Walks are boring (at least in the minds of most kids). Quests, on the other hand, are amazingly fun. Turn a fitness-boost hike into something more imaginative by taking on the roles of different characters from a story. Maybe you’re Frodo, Sam and Gandalf en route to Mount Doom. Perhaps you’re Anna and Kristoff searching for Elsa’s ice palace. Or Robin and Little John escaping from the Sheriff of Nottingham. Imagination games work a treat when it comes to keeping up motivation – particularly for younger kids. If they’re a little older, a ‘treasure hunting’ activity such as geocaching or orienteering can add extra interest to a walk. COMPETE WITH WEARABLES Using wearable technology to set challenges and track progress is proven to help adults shape up – and now there are plenty of wearable options out there for children as well. Some allow you to hold competitions with other members of the family. Most kids can be convinced to get off the couch if it involved beating Mum or Dad’s step count! l

CHARITY
Putting the Pieces Back Together When a child loses a family member they were dependent on, it can be a harrowing experience. Yet, a charity that offers grief support to youngsters does exist, as Ruth Lawrence discovered when she visited Jigsaw (South East) in East Grinstead.
L
osing a family member through accident, illness, suicide, or murder is an unimaginably awful experience but doubly challenging to a child or young person who depended upon that person for love and support. The sad reality is that in the UK one child in 29, will be bereaved of a parent by the time they are 16. Jigsaw (South East) is a child bereavement charity which offers grief support to young people and their families, and those preparing for the loss of a loved one. Bereavement can bewilder children which is why they need to talk and be given an explanation of what is happening in an age appropriate, honest way, while having their questions answered thoughtfully. Hannah Romaine and Molly Humphreys were nine and eight years old, respectively, when they lost their fathers to cancer. Both attended separate Jigsaw (South East) Grief Support groups. Now, aged 20 and 19 they say the help they received was ‘invaluable,’ they felt less isolated and met other children in the same
situation who understood what they were going through. The girls met at college and have become close friends, bonded by their shared experience of childhood bereavement. They decided to get in touch with the charity again, to ‘give something back as a thank you, for the support they had received at a

desperately difficult time in their young lives. As the charity supports young people, it has been crucial to find people of a similar age to speak out about the experience and process of facing the bereavement of a family member and this is where ‘Young Ambassadors’ are enormously helpful. For the past two years, Hannah and Molly have been ‘Young Ambassadors’ for Jigsaw, attending events and sharing their stories and experiences. They have also met and spoken with younger bereaved children at family group sessions. Hannah said: “We hand out teddy bears, and it’s great to see the friendships the children have made.” In 2019, the girls helped to launch BBC Children in Need in Sussex, and both of them spoke about how volunteering has helped build their confidence. Last December Molly January 2021 | SUSSEX LIVING 101

officially represented Jigsaw in an online streamed memorial service. Molly and Hannah have embraced their ambassadorial roles and the responsibility of spreading the word about the invaluable services the charity offers. They are shining examples of how the right support at the right time can help a devastated young life. Both young women will be starting university this Autumn. KATHY’S STORY Kathy Binning grew up with her twin sister Ceri always alongside her; photos show them playing, two happy little girls, with wide grins having
fun with the unique and extra special companionship only a twin can provide. Decades later, a week after Ceri had given birth to her second son, she was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Kathy, who had just become pregnant after years of trying, supported her sister through chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgery. Twice Ceri was given the all-clear. But when her cancer returned for the third time it had spread and, realising she would need support put in place for her young sons and husband Gary, Ceri contacted Jigsaw. The family was able to enjoy several Jigsaw activity days out, meeting other families in the same situation. Five
years after her initial diagnosis Ceri, aged just 40, died in June 2020. Since her death, the charity has continued to support Gary and the boys. Ceri campaigned tirelessly to raise awareness of pancreatic cancer. After her death, Kathy set up an In Memory page to honour her and raised over £3,000 for Jigsaw (South East). Kathy said her sister was, “her heroine, utterly selfless and devoted to family.” She plans to continue fundraising for the charity to help others, in celebration of the bravery and courage of her beloved twin. l To find out how you can donate, support, volunteer for, or learn more about Jigsaw’s work, visit www.jigsawsoutheast.org.uk

CARE
In need of Respite In these difficult times, the role of a carer is more challenging than ever and the need for respite is so important. Adele Trathan explores some of the options available.
A break can be beneficial for both the carer and the loved one that is being cared for
C
arers need to take time for themselves, for their own health and wellbeing. The opportunity to renew energy levels and restore a sense of balance is vital for carers who can often feel isolated and stressed. Respite care comes in many different forms but basically it provides short-term relief from primary caregiving duties. Respite care options range from a trained volunteer sitting with the person being looked after for a few hours, to a short stay in a care home. In normal circumstances without Covid-19, there may be the opportunity to visit a day care centre or attend organised social events.
A break can be beneficial for both the carer and the loved one that is being cared for. Sometimes that hour or two can make an enormous difference, a trip to the shops, coffee with a friend can help provide relief from the daily duties and bring back a sense of self. Those being cared for can also benefit from new interactions with different people and a change of environment. If a longer break is needed some care homes offer short-term respite care.
Depending on individual circumstances respite care can be self-funded or some local charities offer help through trained volunteers. It is also worth contacting your local council who can provide a needs assessment and carer’s assessment to find out if you qualify for council-funded respite care. l Further information is available on the following websites: www.carerssupport.org.uk, www.careruk.org, www.cftc.org.uk www.sussexpartnership.nhs.uk

CARE
Could you change a child’s life? Since the Covid-19 pandemic more people are finding out about becoming a foster carer as Jackie Hoare of West Sussex County Council reports
S
ince the start of lockdown new enquiries regarding fostering in West Sussex are up 18% compared with the same period last year. Between mid-March and the end of November there were 283 calls or online enquiries to West Sussex County Council’s fostering service. Even in these challenging times 18 new fostering households have been approved since the start of the pandemic and are now successfully fostering a child or children with West Sussex County Council. A further 24 assessments are also currently underway as a result of enquiries made during Covid-19. While enquiries have gone up, sadly the number of children who have come into care has risen by more than 100, taking the total to just over 900. Clare Spencer, Service Lead for Fostering at West Sussex County Council, said, “It is really positive that more people are finding out about fostering, however the reality is that the pandemic has seen a big rise in the number of children coming into our care than we would normally see - so the need for people to foster has never been higher. The ongoing effects of the pandemic 106 SUSSEX LIVING | January 2021
continue to cause extra pressures on families.” The rise in fostering enquiries is likely to be for a variety of reasons and the global pandemic has demonstrated great examples of people helping others in their community. People are reassessing their situations and seeking something more rewarding, especially those who have been considering fostering for some time. Some are looking for alternative careers, through

choice or necessity, and realising fostering can be a great option where you can stay at home, it can also fit around family life and work and make a real difference to a child’s life. Mark and Scott began fostering twins just before the first lockdown began. Scott said: “We’re really loving it so far and although it’s a total lifestyle change for us both, it has been brilliant.” Mark added, “We foster with West Sussex County Council because we know that we’re part of a big network of other foster carers and there’s professional help if you ever need it.” Covid-19 has been challenging for carers and children alike, and the council continues to run virtual support groups for its carer families. West Sussex County Council’s fostering recruitment team remain busy and virtual assessments have continued throughout, meaning new carers can be approved within six months. Fostering is a big decision so people can speak to the team who can answer questions and advise whether fostering could be right for you and your family. If you are interested in fostering a child in West Sussex, you can find out more at: www.westsussex.gov.uk/fostering or call 0330 222 7775.

IF YOU
ask me...
LET’S FACE IT – IF THEY MADE 2020 INTO A FEATURE FILM, YOU WOULDN’T WANT TO BUY THE DVD. FLO WHITAKER’S NO PARTY ANIMAL, BUT SHE’S NEVER BEEN KEENER TO RING IN THE NEW YEAR
I grew up in a large, noisy and very political household. Meals were consumed to a soundtrack of seven chattering kids, a squawking parrot, clattering plates and horribly creaking furniture; all accompanied by high decibel ‘debate’ and thunderous table thumping, (which, in hindsight, probably explains the creaking furniture). Everyone was expected to hold opinions about everything and defend their positions vigorously. Grandad, pointing furiously at a newspaper headline, would bellow, “Well, what do you think of that - eh?” The feeble reply, “I don’t know - I’m only seven,” wasn’t remotely acceptable. “Get angry - stay angry” was grandad’s personal motto. He’d spin in his grave if he could see those dispiriting videos of NHS workers wearing homemade scrubs and PPE gear manufactured from bin liners and bedsheets. Whatever your political allegiance, when the Covid-19 history books are written, it’ll be hard to shake off the feeling that we all should have been better served. Never mind - if you think Great Britain is up effluent creek sans paddle, a glance across the pond at our American cousins suggests things in the UK could actually be worse. It’s like viewing car crash wreckage; we shake our heads in disbelief and gawp, voyeur-style through our fingers, as one of the most controversial presidents in US history grudgingly makes way for the oldest president in US history, and everyone secretly wonders what the hell they’re going to put on the shelves of the Trump Presidential Library. Happy New Year. May it be kinder to us all.

PETS
It’s a Dog’s Life January may not be an indoor month for everyone, but for Teddy it’s time to contemplate redecoration and the battle for control of the soft furnishings. As usual, his barks and yelps are translated into human by Helen Stockton

I’ve noticed they often have a And I don’t know what goes on in your well-groomed pooch gracing one of household, but in ours, it’s not so much their equally wellspring cleaning as groomed rooms, winter cleaning. She’s always reading about but white walls, With the garden Scandi minimalism safely doing its own interiors in this magazine and high polished thing in the frost and in those specialist kitchen floors don’t and the rain and the interior magazines work quite so well snow, the attentions with muddy feet of ‘Her Indoors’ and tumble-weed fur balls blowing are redirected to the inside. She’s trying along the skirting. And to my mind to persuade ‘Him Indoors’ to do a bit tasteful accessorising is not a few scatter of decorating. When they moved into cushions or a throw, unless it’s there our present house fifteen years ago, he for the dog of the household to lounge decorated throughout and now looks on; but a carefully placed rubber toy all pained at the idea that he might be in a strongly contrasting shade, so we expected to do it again. 110 SUSSEX LIVING | January 2021
Sometimes there is a little bit of conflict over the ornamentation of the living space. ‘Her Indoors’ decided that a tasteful collection of three large wooden balls was just the thing in the living room but as one of them has a rope handle, like an oversized Christmas bauble, I mistook this for a tuggy toy and got into trouble. Not my fault whichever way you look at it. She also has strange notions about not having me on the furniture which is a bit unfair as I was allowed to go wherever I wanted in my previous home. I’ve abandoned the sofa with reasonably good grace, but I still keep trying for their bed regardless of the scolding. ‘Junior Her’ has got a beanbag in her old room, and as there hasn’t been a collective decision about whether this is furniture or not: a grey area or is that ‘sea mist’ or ‘winter silver’, I have taken advantage and claimed it as my own. Anyway, hasn’t ‘Her Indoors’ heard of the old adage about British interior design and the tendency to choose colours, for major soft furnishing items, that match their dogs? Border Terrier beige anyone? l

“I cannot Express just how much our dog meant, he was my shadow, my companion, my best friend. You gave us the chance to spend time with him in his own comfortable surroundings. His brother was there to sniff goodbye too. He had been ill for so long and Dr Jo came out to see him. All this was at the beginning of the pandemic so it was iffy times. But we couldn’t have asked for a better service. Peace, compassion, respect and time. Bless you all for your compassion to animals and the people who love them xx”. JOANNA 5I

EQUALISER
A simple process of logic is all that it takes to solve each puzzle in this game. Put the numbers 1 to 9 in each vertical column and each horizontal line. Each number must appear only once in each column and line and in each of the 3x3 boxes in the grid.
Place a different arithmetical sign (add, subtract, multiply, divide) in each circle so that the total of each line across and down is the same. Perform the first calculation in each line first and ignore the mathematical law which says you should always perform division and multiplication before addition and subtraction.

Each number in the grid represents a different letter of the alphabet. You have three letters in the control grid to start you off. Enter them in the appropriate squares in the main grid, then use your knowledge of words to work out which letters should go in the missing squares. As you get the letters, fill in other squares with the same number in the main grid and control grid. Check off the alphabetical list of letters as you identify them.
