Since falling in love with horses a few years back, life has turned decidedly equine for Martin Clunes down on his Dorset family farm. He talks to Seona Shuttleworth about his life with horses, and being President of The British Horse Society

Already known to millions from his stage and screen appearances, including Doc Martin, Reggie Perrin and Men Behaving Badly, his 2010 ITV documentary series Horsepower revealed his passion for horses. places I get to go to. In particular, the various stables that I’ve visited that forge themselves as the hearts of their communities. They absorb people, old and young, into the life of the stables, and a life with horses. I think that’s

my favourite bit. I find that the most inspirational. Can you remember how it felt to be asked to be BHS President? Well, I think it was at Hickstead and

The British Horse Society (BHS) is the largest equestrian charity in the UK, with over 108,000 members. The BHS is dedicated to education, equine welfare, protecting and increasing access to bridleways and equestrian routes, and safety for horse and riders. Anyone aspiring to an equestrian career, whether it be caring for horses, riding professionally or coaching the next generation, can access world-class BHS qualifications to help them reach

How did you get into horses to begin with? I got drawn into the whole horse thing via my daughter and my wife. I had been very happy to be part of the support team and drive the pony around, but I wasn’t that bothered about getting on one or having a relationship with a horse myself. But then I was doing a job out in New Zealand where I had to ride a horse in the film. My family had come out

their goals. The new Challenge Awards also support all recreational riders to enhance their equine knowledge at their own pace. The Society’s thriving and active community of staff and volunteers are committed to improving the lives of horses everywhere. The Longines Royal International Horse Show at Hickstead is the official Horse Show of The British Horse Society, and is one of the biggest and most prestigious equestrian events in the world.

Changing Lives through Horses In the UK, 10.9% of 16-24 year olds aren’t in education, employment or training, and 1 in 5 young adults have a diagnosable mental health disorder. The BHS’ Changing Lives through Horses programme has the potential to reach these young people at a critical point in their lives, and give them the opportunity to develop the skills that will enable them to return to education and employment. The programme uses BHS Approved Centres as an alternative learning environment to a traditional classroom, and enables participants to develop their abilities, supported by specially trained BHS Accredited Professional Coaches (APC).

To make a donation and help change the direction of young lives through the power of horses, please visit bhs.org.uk/CLTH with me, so the day before shooting started we all went for a ride together. I suddenly realised it was something that the three of us could do together and instantly - before we got back to England – I texted someone and bought a horse! What do you hope to see over the next few years? I just think wouldn’t it be great if loads more members joined, and more people found out about the work of The British Horse Society! To reach some more people who haven’t grown up around horses or haven’t had the opportunity to be near horses, to let them know that by going to a BHS Approved centre

It’s a huge privilege to share my life with horses you can wash a horse, brush a horse and hang out with a horse, as well as sit on its back and ride. There are so many things to do with a horse and I’d love to see more and more people use the BHS as the fantastic resource that it is, to enable them to get near a horse safely and sensibly. What do you find most special about being around horses? What I like most about being around horses is how much they give you. Whenever I’m with them and I’m riding or driving them, I simply can’t think

of anything else. I know it’s a huge privilege to share my life with horses, so I’m so proud of the BHS for giving people the chance to share their lives with horses too. Tell us about one of the BHS campaigns you’re involved with? I’m thrilled about the work the BHS is doing with Changing Lives through Horses, because I’ve witnessed firsthand all around the world, how people’s lives are changed through contact with horses and it’s a brilliant way to scoop people up who might otherwise have been left behind. It’s great that the BHS can give some disadvantaged young people more opportunities to access jobs or a life with horses. l

SCHOOL HOLIDAYS PARKS AND GARDENS Local parks are a wonderful community resource and the perfect place for an injection of natural beauty. With open lawns, lovely walks, formal flower gardens and children’s play areas, your local park is a great place to meet with friends, enjoy a picnic, a cycle ride and visit the cafe. Many larger parks, like Alexander Park in Hastings, Stanmer Park in Brighton, Princes Park in Eastbourne and Lewes Priory Park have a wider range of facilities and attractions, such as historic houses and ancient ruins, woodland walks, miniature railways, boating lakes, tennis courts, bowling greens and bandstand concerts. Nature lovers will also appreciate long walks around some of the wonderful Sussex gardens open to the public. Enjoy superb plant and wildlife viewing, before a browse in the gift shop and a well-deserved cup of tea.

Active Summers IN SUSSEX

With a glorious coastline, magnificent countryside, fascinating historic towns and wonderful local attractions, Sussex provides the perfect environment for getting out and enjoying a more active lifestyle this summer, writes Lisa de Silva

W

e are lucky to live in such a beautiful part of the country and with longer daylight hours and warmer weather, the summer months offer the perfect opportunity to increase our activity levels. Current NHS guidelines recommend we all take

at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity, like brisk walking or cycling every week, which will not only reduce our risk of major illness, but will also improve our mood, sleep quality, stress levels and wellbeing. So, here are some ideas to help you embrace the great outdoors, improve your health and enjoy lots of family fun in the sunshine.

THE SOUTH DOWNS WAY For those that prefer to get out into the countryside, walking or cycling the South Downs Way in the newly established South Downs National Park is a fantastic way to experience a diverse range of scenery, plant, bird and wildlife, along with panoramic views. The path runs for around 100 miles from Winchester to Eastbourne, stretching along an elevated chalk ridge offering great views of ancient woodland, the Weald and the white cliffs of the Sussex Heritage Coast. Shorter walks of between 5 and 10 miles allow the time-constrained to tackle the route in manageable stages. Highlights include Ditchling Beacon; Newtimber Hill and Saddlescombe Farm; Lewes and the stunning hilltop of Blackcap, as well as the stretch encompassing

Cuckmere Haven, the Seven Sisters, Beachy Head, Birling Gap and Belle Tout Lighthouse. All offer a chance to blow away the cobwebs and soak up the peaceful views. Along the way enjoy a stop for a well-earned pub lunch or a nutritious picnic. COUNTRYSIDE WALKS AND NATURE RESERVES Local nature reserves are another great place to get out and about in the countryside and enjoy a walk amid wild flowers, butterflies, dragonflies, bird and wildlife. Malling Down near Lewes, Bedelands near Burgess Hill and Wood Mills near Henfield, all offer free access to countryside that includes ancient ponds, woodlands, wild hedgerows and meadows. Or head

to Ashdown Forest and discover the home of Winnie the Pooh; take a hike to the Long Man of Wilmington or discover the ancient charm of Cissbury Ring. With so many wonderful places to enjoy a walk or a cycle there is no chance of ever getting bored with the scenery. For added inspiration check out the Sussex Living Walks archive. SEASIDE WALKS AND ATTRACTIONS While the South Downs Way covers a magnificent stretch of the Sussex coastline, other parts of the seafront can offer a different type of active experience. Walking, cycling, skateboarding or rollerblading along the front at places like Brighton, Eastbourne and Hastings allows you to stop for ice cream and coffee, browse local galleries and museums and enjoy

CYCLE TRAILS Invigorating, fun and liberating for all age groups, cycling is a great form of exercise. For those put off by heavy road traffic, Sussex offers a good selection of traffic-free trails which are ideal for family cycling. Some of the most popular include the Cuckoo Trail which runs for 11 miles from Polegate to Heathfield; Worth Way, a 7-mile trail from Three Bridges to East Grinstead Station which follows the path of the old railway line and

LEISURE CENTRE ACTIVITIES, TENNIS AND SWIMMING For a wide range of activities your local leisure centre has much to offer with a mix of swimming, exercise classes, squash, badminton, trampolining, climbing walls and gym equipment. During the summer months the programme of activities is often expanded to include active holiday clubs for children, as well as special offers. What’s more, tennis courts can be cheaply and easily booked with your local district council. A game for all the family, tennis is sociable, develops teamwork and requires a fast response to problem solving that can help in other areas of life. Alternatively, swimming is not only synonymous with summer, but a day spent on the beach or at one of our lovely outdoor pools and lidos is a fabulous way to relax with family and friends and enjoy some glorious summer fun. RESERVOIRS AND RAILWAYS The summer months are also a great time to visit one of our lovely reservoirs.

Take a walk and spot a number of wild birds including grey heron, black kite and white stork, or the more adventurous may also wish to indulge in some water sports including sailing, windsurfing, kayaking and paddleboarding. Another great way to get out and explore Sussex countryside, towns and villages is to take a train journey. Riding the train makes a great day out and makes most of the county’s many and varied attractions accessible. For a real treat, travel back in time and enjoy a family day out on a romantic steam railway, riding in wonderfully preserved and restored carriages across our stunning countryside.

Embrace the great outdoors, improve your health and enjoy lots of family fun

ADVENTURE PARKS, ZOOS AND FARMS Many of our local farms have now developed to offer visitors more than just a chance to pet and learn about the animals. With great cafes and shops selling home-produced goodies, many now also offer fabulous play areas, along with children’s tractor and amusement rides. Similarly, traditional zoos now also offer rides and play areas to entertain the children. And if exciting activities are high on your list, a visit to an adventure or theme park

will not disappoint. From zip-wires, to funfair rides, water parks and gokarts, there is something to suit all ages and tastes. To help keep the cost down look out for coupons, voucher codes and special offers which many of these attractions participate in. HISTORIC HOMES, CASTLES AND MUSEUMS Sussex has a long and rich history with evidence of ancient burial mounds, hill forts and many Norman abbeys and castles, built after William of

Normandy landed at Pevensey and won the Battle of Hastings in 1066. During the Middle Ages, the main towns included Lewes, Hastings and Rye and an iron industry developed in the Weald around local ore and charcoal. Most of the county’s modern development has been along the coastline, beginning with the late 18th century popularity of Brighton which established itself as a fashionable seaside resort under royal patronage. By the late 19th century, other resort towns, such as Bexhill and Eastbourne had emerged. This all means that there are many historic churches, houses, gardens, cathedrals and castles to discover and explore. A walk around any will help you appreciate our links to the past and the lifestyles of our ancestors. Another great way to commune with the past is a visit to one of our local town and village museums. This is an interesting way to learn more about where we live and how the past has impacted on the lives we lead today. Alternatively, for those with special interests, such as aviation, astronomy, Roman, rural or industrial history, a day out at a specialist openair museum can be the highlight of any summer holiday. l

Frank Henson tribute

adly, we lost stunt legend and Poynings resident, Frank Henson on 25th April. Born in May 1935, in Whitehawk, Brighton, he had humble beginnings. Frank moved to London and was working on the doors in and around Soho, when he became a SUSSEX film extra by chance, then decided to become a ST UNTMAN stuntman. Frank deemed it unnecessary to be a clever-clogs or have academic qualifications, “As I long as you are willing to climb that ladder of success and work for it, you will get up there.” It wasn’t until Frank worked on Return of the Jedi that he became famous. His character Biker Scout battled with Luke Skywalker. Frank got to know actors; Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford. He worked with John Wayne in Brannigan, and Wayne was Frank’s hero. The Luck of Losing the Toss by Frank Henson, published by Brown Dog Books, is out now PROFILE

I was a good driver which is how I got into stunts – working on films like Casino Royale (1967) and Brannigan (1975). On Brannigan, I not only got to work with, but double the legendary John Wayne. LOCAL MALE VOICE ACAPELLA CHORUS TRIUMPHS

Steyning based, Vocal Fusion Acapella, recently won the “Best Small Chorus” award at the National Barbershop Convention in Bournemouth. They also won their division, £750 in prize money, and recorded their highest ever score in this championship. It was a great achievement for musical director Zoe Peate, who started this chorus less than four years ago. Zoe commented, ”Vocal technique is paramount and members work hard improving voice quality, breathing, and having an emotional understanding of the piece we are singing to deliver an engaging performance. Whether singing barbershop, jazz, swing, spirituals or other musical acapella styles, the guys can sing and create great harmonies really well. All the guys love to sing and the breadth of our repertoire always thrills our audiences.” Vocal Fusion Acapella rehearse at Steyning Methodist Church and new singers are very welcome. www.vocalfusionacapella.co.uk

he beautiful and historic Sussex town of Lewes, independent-minded and proud of links with philosopher and revolutionary Thomas Paine, is home to many artists and people working in the creative arts. It comes as no surprise therefore that it is in Lewes that the world’s only community carnival celebrating the transition of local children from primary school to secondary school and into adolescence takes place every year. Called the ‘Patina Moving On Parade’, the carnival is a sea of happy children carrying and wearing exuberant costumes and structures they have made themselves in a mass arts project involving schools right across the district. The town is closed down for the parade and the streets are lined with throngs of people of all ages showing their support and wishing the children well as they move on to the next stage of their lives. Made possible by a huge community effort, the tradition has been going for

18 years now and over 7000 young people have passed through this joyous rite of passage. The idea was the brainchild of a group of artists, parents and teachers in 2002 in response to the dramatic reduction in focus on the arts in the national curriculum. They created PATINA (Parents and Teachers in the Arts), and the Moving On project was born.

The traffic stops, the people gather and the children feel the eyes of Lewes wishing them a thousand blessings A different theme is chosen every year, and the schools and local community get involved in choosing the elements to be included. Patina goes into each of the schools to present the theme and, to a drum roll of young hands against desks, reveals what each school will be in their Moving On Parade. There follows a hive of

activity across the region as Patina artists work with over 400 children to make the exuberant carnival costumes they will wear on their big Moving On day. The theme this year is ‘Once Upon a Moving On’, celebrating children’s literature and stories, old and new. The topic has been hotly debated by the children and the end result is a selection of the most loved books with a mix of traditional tales, enduring classics and contemporary favourites. On-lookers will have a treat watching Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Alice in Wonderland and Harry Potter float by on 5 July. So the Moving On tradition continues and is clearly loved by all involved. A comment by Alisdair, a recent Moving On parent, sums it up: “What an amazing gift to our children and the wider community. To have that moment when the traffic stops, the people gather and the children feel the eyes of Lewes wishing them a thousand blessings on the next stage of their journey.” Long may the story continue. l Lewes Patina takes place in Lewes High Street on the 5th July, starting at 12:30pm, and ending at 1:40pm. www.patinalewes.com

Need to Lose Weight once & for all? An Interview with Rachel Ricketts, a Leading Weight Loss Consultant. Rachel is delighted to be celebrating

Why is The Metabolic Weight Loss Programme so successful?

her 17th year as a weight loss consultant, having helped thousands of people to successfully lose weight. Owing to the outstanding success of Rachel’s approach and her highly workable Metabolic Weight Loss Programme, she has become a leading UK weight loss consultant.

“The programme is not a quick-fix or faddy diet. It uses a step-by-step approach, taking you from the way you are eating to another way, so that you can comfortably lose and maintain your weight. It is structured, easy to follow and tailored for individual needs as required. Clients time after time say that they are not hungry and not struggling with cravings”

Rachel, what does it feel like having helped so many people? “My job satisfaction is more than I could ever have expected - I see daily just how life changing it is for someone when they have finally lost their weight. As I had a weight problem myself in the past, I am only too aware of how being overweight can affect one’s life.”

How do you keep your clients motivated while they’re on the programme?

What is the typical type of person that comes to you?

Rachel Ricketts, Weight Loss Consultant

“By the time most of our clients reach us, they have done faddy diets, been to diet clubs, lived off diet shakes, taken slimming pills etc., and gone from one diet to another, getting more and more confused. Many are worried about health issues due to being overweight and are looking for something that will finally help them lose weight once and for all.

No matter how hard you have tried in the past, The Metabolic Weight Loss Programme could just be the answer to resolving your weight problem once and for all.

We are so often told we are their last chance. Our hundreds of hand written testimonials, independent reviews, videos and before and after photos, show just what can be achieved with the Metabolic Weight Loss Programme.”

“Many of our clients report an average weight loss of 7-14lbs. a month, which as you imagine is very welcomed! Those who have an underactive thyroid can also fall in this weight loss range. They feel so much better with their health, well-being improvements and increased energy levels. Getting into clothes that they thought they would never be able to wear again is very welcomed!”

What does your support consist of? “Consultations are either in person or by phone, with email support as needed. We always take a positive and non-judgmental approach, which is much appreciated! We have clients throughout the UK and overseas - so distance is no object! So many times, clients say that they couldn’t have lost their weight without our invaluable support.”

GIRLGUIDING

Happy 40th birthday to Girlguiding Sussex Central County! writes Diann Johnson

G

WE ARE

irlguiding Sussex Central County has had a long and rich journey in its Guiding history since the Girl Guides officially began in 1910. Several years following the creation of Girl Guides, Lady Olave Baden-Powell became the first County Commissioner of Sussex which at that time was one large Guiding County. As the Guiding movement became more popular and increased in numbers, Lady BadenPowell became the Chief Guide. In her place, Dame Alice Godman, who lived at South Lodge in Lower Beeding, became the new Sussex County Commissioner. Years later as increasing numbers of girls wanted to be part of the Guiding movement, Sussex County was divided into Sussex East and Sussex West to handle the need. As Girlguiding kept expanding, Sussex Central County was formed on 1st April 1979, when West Sussex was divided into two new Guiding counties, Sussex Central and Sussex West. Today, Sussex Central County consists of eight Divisions: Burgess Hill, Crawley, East Grinstead, Haywards Heath, Horsham, Parkminster, South Down, and Worth. Over 900 volunteers provide the Girlguiding programme

40! Girls can explore, discuss and make decisions on issues important to themselves to almost 3000 Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and Rangers. The County is also supported by the many Trefoil Guilds, which is “Guiding for adults.” As this year celebrates Sussex Central County’s 40th Birthday, many activities and challenges have been planned. On the May Bank Holiday weekend, when the weather ranged from sunny to rain to hail and sleet, over 1000 members from across the County joined together to celebrate at the “There’s no place like Guiding” Camp near East Grinstead. The Wizard of Oz themed camp gave the weekend campers, as well as day visitors, a chance to try new activities from bungee trampoline to rugby, and

scarecrow making to silent disco. There was also time to make new friends and catch up with some old ones. One Brownie wanted to “camp another two nights” in spite of the weather. Rainbows came as Day Visitors and enjoyed the variety of adventures and as one Leader said, “My Rainbows are excited about becoming Brownies so that they can camp.” Lisa Barden, Sussex Central County’s Commissioner, commented, “It was lovely that so many girls joined us from across the County. This has been an excellent way to celebrate with all our young members, leaders and other adult volunteers. Thank you to all the leaders who brought along their girls and to the camp team who spent the last year planning this event.” Sussex Central County’s celebrations continue during 2019 with a Tea Party in June for all of the adult volunteers. In September, all youth and adult members will visit an adventure park, as will the older Guides and Rangers in October. On 9th November, 48 members representing Sussex Central County will take part in London’s Lord Mayor’s Show with a special float in the parade and everyone is being encouraged to join in the birthday celebrations. Through the support of our many volunteers there truly is “no place like Guiding” as in September the new Girlgirling Programme for all sections begins. Sussex Central County continues to provide a unique girl-only environment where girls can explore, discuss and make decisions on issues important to themselves. All members discover that through Girlguiding they can find their voice in leadership, inspiring them to discover the best in themselves and to make a positive difference in their community. l www.girlguiding.org.uk

PETS

It’s birthdays and hopefully, presents galore in Teddy the Border Terrier’s household this month, writes Helen Stockton, the pen behind the paw

M

e and a significant member of my family, ‘Him Indoors’, have something in common, we both have our birthdays in the same month. This means that we are Cancerians which apparently indicates that water is our element. As neither me or ‘Him Indoors’ are fussed on swimming, I can only think this refers to drinking it, in which case we’re both particular; fresh, cold and clean please. I’m not sure that a crab is the animal I’d best chose as representative, and I refute any suggestion of crabbiness, but I’m happy to be showered with our

It’s a Dog’s Life birth stones: pearls, rubies, moonstones and emeralds. One good thing about Cancerians is that we’re compatible with Scorpios which is ‘Her Indoors’ birth sign. That’s a mercy for both of us then. This year, I’m seven, which means that I’m comfortably in my prime. ‘Him Indoors’ however, has reached a significant birthday, the kind that has a digit followed by a zero. Far be it from me to indicate what that digit might be but let’s put it this way, he might need a pair of binoculars to view his prime disappearing in the fast receding distance…

Last year I had a tasty birthday cake made out of tinned tuna with a sliced chicken icing Anyway, family members all have different ways of dealing with birthdays. ‘Him Indoors’ pretends they are not happening which is slightly awkward when it’s a significant one that the

family wants to mark. He’s getting around it this year, by disappearing on holiday, so he’ll only have ‘Her Indoors’ enforced celebrations to deal with. I happen to know that she’s got a large packet of balloons to pack which should scupper ‘Him Indoors’ plans for discretion. Perhaps she’ll get the whole restaurant singing ‘Happy birthday’ as well, then his happiness will be complete!

‘Her Indoors’ adopts a celebratory approach to her birthday. She always takes it off work as her present to herself and normally manages to drag the festivities out over several days and various cakes. She has the attitude that as you can’t stop the relentless succession of anniversaries, you might as well enjoy them. I take the pragmatic approach as I’m rather dependent on the efforts of others in terms of birthday celebrations. Last year I had a tasty birthday cake made out of tinned tuna with a sliced chicken icing, and a candle I wasn’t allowed to eat. I’m hoping for a repeat. I’m also keeping my paws crossed for new toys. The Christmas ones have either long since been relegated to the bin, or are missing so many body parts it’s difficult to distinguish their identity. My toy bunny, for example, currently has no legs, ears or scarf. He’s been nicknamed Bob as that’s the only movement option available to him, unless of course he’s being shaken by me. Which brings me to a happily unifying birthday element. Whilst me and ‘Him Indoors’ may have a differing approach, we do have in common the appreciation of a thoughtful gift. So some presents would be nice please. l

LOCAL PERSONALITY

From pulling pints to singing hymns, Reverend Paul Mundy has spent his entire working life in the hospitality industry, as Robert Veitch found out

A

long Church Road in Newick, at the end of a secluded cul-de-sac, lies St Mary’s Church. It’s barely a quarter of a mile from the village green and traffic travelling the A272. A wooden Saxon structure at the time of the Norman invasion, the Normans rebuilt it in sandstone, some of which remains. The porch timbers are 600 years old and the font is 14th century. Industrious Victorians created the church it is today and installed the organ. Between the church and the village green are three long established pubs. Sitting in a pew, listening to a Paul Mundy sermon, it’s surreal to contemplate the fact that this Associate Vicar has spent most of his working life in pubs. Over the traditional tea and cake afterwards he enlightened me further. “I grew up in Eastbourne and worked in the hotel industry from an early age, after which I was a publican in Wilmington, Isfield and Lewes, totalling 23 years in the business. I had my first pub at 25, a record at the time for the Brewery.” An ‘Alpha Course’ poster Paul allowed to be attached to his pub notice board proved to be a turning point. “It broadcast the slogan ‘There must be more to life than this’ with the image of a man being dipped in a pint. I went along to the venue just

Calling Time at the Pub & Pulpit to have a go at the vicar running the course… but things didn’t go to plan,” he chuckled. Before long “I had helped the chaplain run three ‘Alpha Courses’ in Lewes Prison.” Driving home from Brighton one day initiated the pivotal, road to Damascus moment, to call time at the pub and be permanently drawn to the sound of church bells. “I saw a poster

proclaiming ‘Jesus gave his life for you, what are you doing with yours?’” Paul spoke to his Chaplain and applied for the church. A year later he received a call from the Bishop of Chichester, and an offer of two years residential theological training in Cambridge. An experience Paul recalled with a reminiscent glow on his face.

Once ordained Paul became Curate to the Parishes of Barcombe and Newick. He’s now two and a half years into a five-year stretch as Associate Vicar at St Mary’s. A bit like a five-year deal for a professional footballer, I quipped. And where will Paul be at the end of that deal? “God knows… where I will be,” he said with a grin, making both of us giggle like primary school boys.

Bearing in mind Newick has only had four incumbent vicars in the last 60 years, what was it like being the new kid in town? “It was daunting, but a huge privilege. I pinch myself in disbelief sometimes. It’s a humbling experience to serve a community and this is a very welcoming village. As clergy we are ‘called’ to a place. I expected to be offered a role in an urban church, not a rural parish, but we have a saying…. How do you make God laugh? Tell God your plans.” Paul continued, “Despite what people think, pubs and churches have plenty in common. I saw and see, people at their best and their worst. I loved my time in the pub and still enjoy a pint. Now, I love my time in the church. They’re just different seasons in my lifetime.” “We have a vision here at St Mary’s, to take the church to the community, to reach out. People are thirsty for faith, for spirituality and we have a duty to meet people where they are.” The differences between pubs and pulpits are sometimes a little strange to comprehend. Paul has noticed, “on public transport people give you space, no one wants to sit next to a man in a dog collar, and that really amuses me. And when I’m enjoying a pint I can get involved in some quite animated

Pubs and churches have plenty in common discussions with drinkers, which I really enjoy. I barred people from my pubs, but never from the church. Not yet.” With empty teacups and a sprinkling of cake crumbs remaining, it was time to leave. “Hospitality has been my life,” reflected Paul as we stood up to shake hands. “See you next time, mate,” he concluded, turning away to stack chairs and clear tables. This unique landlord may have left the pub behind, but he’s still calling time from the pulpit. l For further information: newickchurch.org

LOCAL WALK

BOLNEY

WALK

Summer is here and this month Robert Veitch heads for the footpaths, byways, fields and woods around Bolney on a gently undulating walk. A perfect summer stroll for a glorious day

A

fter leaving the Rawson Hall car park, cross the road and take the footpath, which starts beside the Silver Birch, and heads west. Past the fence and brick wall is a small bridge and after that the rural idyll is all around. There are fields to the left and privet to the right. It’s a shaded walk all the way to the road. Take the gravel drive opposite, bordered by a metal fence to the right, and vines to the left. The drive eases left at the farmhouse, ending at a wobbly stile. Wander down through the grassy meadow to a high-rise kissing gate. Once through it, turn right and walk up the slope, past more vines to another high-rise kissing gate. Beyond this, bear left across the field, then through a smaller kissing gate, then right, along the track to the tarmac drive. Turn right and follow the super smooth surface north, through the apple orchard and farm buildings, until the tarmac ends. Ignore the fourway fingerpost, and take the single fingerpost leading into the trees. Once past the slanted trunk the path heads uphill gently, through woods primarily consisting of sycamore and beech. All being well, the charming chorus of birdsong should be the dominant sound. Two towering beeches precede a stream and kissing gate. Several magnificent oak trees populate the paddock that follows. Once through the kissing gate, turn right and follow the road as it eases left, then right and gently uphill. 50m past the T-junction with Colwood Lane, bear left onto the gravel drive, then right at the fingerpost shortly after.

Rhododendrons line the path to the right. Turn right at the next fingerpost, over the bridge and through the gate into Furzefield Wood. It leads into a pleasant meadow where a bench offers respite for weary feet under a Scots pine. Beyond the bench is a bridge, a gate and then the walk uphill towards the power lines. To the left across the valley is the impressive Wykehurst Place, a 19th century Gothic inspired mansion. Beyond the next kissing gate the path continues between the stock proof fences to the crossroads. Flick left, then right and continue for 300m to the road. Turn left and walk along the pavement for 75m, then right into

A glance to the right should yield wonderful views of the South Downs

Broxmead Lane. Once over the cacophony of the A23 walk on the right side of the road towards any oncoming traffic. A glance to the right should yield wonderful views of the South Downs on a clear day. Continue past the red letterbox, the turning for Buncton Lane and the turning for Pickwell Lane. As the road works its way downhill, look out for the blue tipped fingerpost on the right, indicating a public bridleway. Walk up the drove, along the periphery of Long Wood, over the crest and downhill to the road. Turn left, and after 150m, turn right, through the gate and across the block-paved area to the stile. Remember to leave the gate as you find it. Beyond the lines of manicured hedges and views to Truleigh Hill is a stile. Continue southwest, past the decapitated tree, following the footpath signs across the meadow, then down through the woods to the road. Turn left and continue south for almost half a mile, then turn right by the mirror and skip through the kissing gate. Follow the drive between the ponds. Once past the ponds, the path angles left, like a shadow across the grass towards a distant silver birch beside a stile. In the next field, strike out towards the oak, following the path, adjacent to ripening crops. Once through the kissing gate, turn left and follow the pavement towards the sound of mechanical thunder. Cross the slip road with care and after emerging from under the A23, turn

BEDELANDS I

first wrote about Burgess Hill’s award winning Bedelands Farm Local Nature Reserve back in 2010, and was keen to see what changes have occurred during the intervening years. The reserve is a local success story; with seven meadows set between areas of Ancient Woodland it’s a rare habitat for several reasons. Having never been ploughed, it’s a reminder of what much of the English countryside used to

One of the greatest changes since my first visit has been the pending acquisition of an 11-hectare block of land adjoining the reserve which will increase the reserve area by a third. This will be comprised of two new wildflower meadows and an area of Ancient Woodland which hasn’t been managed for half a century. The Bedelands Extension will extend west to Freeks Lane and north to the River Adur and the Burgess Hill Green Circle route will be completed as an invaluable green network for the town. Numerous butterflies danced between red and white clover, ox eye daisies, vetch, ragged robin, yellow rattle and bird’s foot trefoil. Brown long-eared bats inhabit areas of woodland; the females have nurseries to raise their young and exclude the males from entering. Another protected species, the hazel dormouse, has been breeding successfully on Bedelands for several years; good news since its numbers are dwindling across the UK. Young people are being actively encouraged to use the reserve and learn about nature around them. A series of free wildlife themed events called ‘Meet the Wild Things’ have been planned during the school holidays, including pond dipping, meadow sweeping and a bug hunt. As I was leaving the Reserve, I spotted the Activity Café. It’s a not for profit venture at the Burgess Hill Town Football Club, who are planning to continue their Sunday openings during the summer to enable local people to meet together over a cup of tea and cake before exploring the wildlife gem on their doorstep. Bedelands has clearly developed in diversity and importance since my last visit; with national recognition for its wildflower resources it looks set to provide a lasting heritage for the future. l www.bh-green-circle.org.uk

Mills across Sussex are setting their sweeps and opening their doors to visitors this summer, writes Philip Hicks

B

OF MILLS

efore the widespread use of fossil fuels and electricity, wind and watermills provided the only source of power for many different manufacturing processes - from making flour, paper, or cloth, to hammering metal and extracting oils. In Sussex there are three main types of windmill - the post mill, tower mill and smock mill. A post mill is so named because the body pivots round a central timber post so the sweeps can always face into the wind. Tower mills have a static tower of brick or stone topped by a revolving timber cap. Smock mills have a tower of timber construction and are said to have taken their name from

a resemblance to an old farm worker’s smock garment. Sussex has an interesting variety of windmills. Nutley is now one of only five original ‘open trestle’ post mills in England. It is the oldest surviving windmill in Sussex and the central post has been dated to the mid sixteenth century. However, it has only stood at its present location since the 1830s. Jack and Jill mills at Clayton are probably the most famous pair of

In Sussex there are three main types of windmill – the post mill, tower mill and smock mill windmills in the region. Jill post mill was built in Dyke Road in Brighton in 1821 and moved to its present location in 1852. It was not uncommon for mills to be moved from one site to another. Jill has been restored to full working order. Windmill Hill post mill near Herstmonceux is the second tallest surviving example in England and has now been restored to workable condition. Rottingdean smock mill is another prominent windmill in Sussex

standing near the cliff top and the A259. During its construction in 1802 newspapers reported the discovery of an ancient skeleton and sword by workmen digging the foundations. The mill has been preserved as a landmark for many years. West Blatchington smock mill, which was built upon a unique complex of old barns, was painted by John Constable in 1820, and now houses a very interesting museum of milling and local history. The tower mills at Stone Cross and Polegate, both near Eastbourne, have also been fully restored.

Many watermills survive in the county but only a handful are restored. rought-resistant, neglecttolerant and seldom bothered by slugs who can’t abide their fragrant foliage, pots of scented leaved pelargoniums will add interest to your garden all summer. They make brilliant conservatory plants too and there are dozens of varieties to choose from – here are a few of my favourites. ‘Attar of Roses’ is a charming old variety with delicate pink flowers and wonderfully soft, scented foliage, reminiscent of country house potpourri. The leaves of ‘Ardwick Cinnamon’ have a rich, spicy scent, while ‘Apple Betty’ carries elegant white flowers and scrumptious foliage that smells of apple tart! ‘Paton’s Unique’ has screaming pink blooms with white highlights, a colour combination not unlike seaside rock, but don’t let that put you off, this non-stop flowerer is a very classy plant – less Brighton, more Hove, actually… Many pelargoniums have citrus-scented leaves. ‘Orange Fizz’, is well-named, with a fragrance that makes your mouth water and large pink blooms. ‘Mabel Grey’ bears inconspicuous pinkish-mauve flowers but has

48 SUSSEX LIVING | July 2019

astonishing lemon sherbet-scented leaves – a perfect garnish for summer drinks and desserts. ‘Chocolate Peppermint’ really does smell of after dinner mints, so is not to everyone’s liking and its mauve-ish blooms are rather insignificant. However, its exotic, jungly-style foliage and vigorous nature makes it a real show-stopper. Visitors will ask you “What is that?!” and beg for a cutting. Pelargoniums originate from desert or semi-tropical regions. Many varieties have been bred from South African species, so it will be no surprise to learn that they are not hardy in a British winter, but they make extremely biddable house/ conservatory plants and this is an excellent way to overwinter them. Give them a frost-free spot in bright light and go steady with the water; a fortnightly watering is usually sufficient between October/March.

They will also naturally fragrance a room. Gently rub a few leaves to release the aromatic oils and disguise a nasty whiff! Many varieties do not have a dormancy period and just keep on growing. Come spring, plants often resemble wonky telly aerials; with long, top-heavy stems that have grown towards the light. Never mind, pelargoniums are so easy from cuttings and spring is an ideal time to take them. Cuttings make exact replicas of the parent plant. By taking regular cuttings, a plant has the potential to ‘live’ forever. One of the oldest pelargonium varieties, ‘Lady Plymouth’, dates from 1807. She has elegant cream-edged, rosescented leaves and pale lilac flowers. Because they have been propagated from cuttings, every ‘Lady Plymouth’ can trace their lineage directly back to that original 1807 plant, so if you spot Her Ladyship at the garden centre, handle her gently and address her in a respectful manner – don’t forget, you’re shaking hands with living horticultural history. l

Terracotta bust is new; the antique jug Penny found in Arundel; “I just love it.”

Chance played a significant part in Penny Tomlinson’s happening upon her house in Chichester, West Sussex. Devastated by the sudden death of her husband, Ernie, and emotionally compelled to leave the Devon village they had both loved, Penny had been prowling England for somewhere that might shape a bearable future for her. “I went to lots of lovely places but just knew that I would remain sad,” she says now. “Then I came to Chichester, not knowing anyone. When I got off the train there were beautiful buildings and I felt masses of energy and just thought, ‘I’ll come here.’” Serendipitously, this house became available on a predominantly Grade II-listed Georgian street where turnover is notoriously rare. Despite some evident drawbacks, Penny pounced. “I just knew, which is kind of strange,” she says. “I loved the idea that the house is hidden behind a wall, so you face into your own private courtyard. It had such a good feeling and, while I was viewing it, the cathedral bells started to ring and the sound was so beautiful.” Less engagingly, the house was only one room deep with no windows to the back, which made it entirely dependent on light from the courtyard. Heavy furniture in situ at the time created a sense of darkness and its Grade II status was likely to preclude any structural changes. July 2019 | SUSSEX LIVING 55

Only slightly daunted, Penny bought in the hope of getting planning permission to add an extension that would embrace the courtyard while encouraging an infusion of natural light. She also intended to remove a wall between an existing small sitting room and an even smaller dining room, but a survey determined that that wall actually dates from Tudor times, with the Georgian street frontage having been added later. The wall, exposed in the upstairs guest room, remains. Two years later and with work completed, Penny feels that obtaining planning permission was largely thanks to her architect, who was adept at respecting historic requirements. Ultimately, their collaboration provided the therapeutic focus that she needed and resulted in adding a desired boot room, downstairs shower room and a generous and bright living space that opens fully to the courtyard. “The process,” she marvels, “was absolutely seamless”. That smooth running was also a reflection of Penny’s own interest in design, which inspired her to establish a lifestyle shop, The Dulwich Trader in London some 27 years ago, now expanded and owned by one of Penny’s

The house is hidden behind a wall, so you face into your own private courtyard I think a house should reflect the people who live in it.” That’s certainly true of this house, where the treasured accumulations of generations of Penny’s family have been re-settled, their move adding a fresh perspective to the rich patina of long use. “When you get to be my age, you take a lot of possessions with you,” she says. “You look at them differently and that’s actually really quite exciting. “While it was all still in boxes, I’d lie in bed and remember everything and then decide where it was all going to go. That’s like shopping in your head for free! You have these things that are

very dear to you that you rediscover and put next to something that they’ve never been next to before. They’re like old friends.” Some items even determined the interior design; the kitchen, for instance, was gutted, re-fitted, painted crisp white and fitted with shelving specifically for Penny’s inherited collection of blue and white Cornishware. “When I took the lid off one of the pots, I discovered that my grandmother had left me a note telling me where it had all been bought and who’d had it before me.” Next door, the small sitting room was furnished in soft, warm neutrals to emphasise its cosseting peacefulness, while the new, west-facing sitting room capitalises on an almost conservatory freshness with the zing of bright colours and a checked armchair that, like most of the furniture, was retained from the Devon house but was re-upholstered for sheer cheerfulness.

Decorated for visiting grandchildren, with shelving accommodating toys from previous generations, Penny’s collection of Enid Blyton books and some things made by Penny’s three sons

As the courtyard remains the key to providing indoor light, Penny replaced its scant existing grass and small beds with old York paving stones that now maximise both light and warmth. To establish a sense of expansiveness in the contained area, she re-planted with whites, blue and lilac, “not shrubs, but things with movement like cow parsley, cosmos, white roses and lavender. The existing, old apricot tree was absolutely dripping with apricots last summer, and it’s all low maintenance.” A large, metal ‘E’ on the courtyard wall was placed in tribute to Ernie, whose presence has been gently insinuated throughout the house. In this case, the letter was advertised online as part of an old French shop sign. When Penny asked to buy just the E, the owner refused, “but when I told him that I had lost my husband, Ernie, he let me buy it right away”. Beginning from desperate hurt, Penny has fashioned a home whose planning provided a healing, forwardlooking focus and whose atmosphere is now redolent of restored happiness and the joy of generations of family and shared memories. l

Winkle Up! It’s fun, it raises a huge amount for charity every year, it’s Winkle Tossing! Peter d’Aguilar meets with Hastings Winkle Club to find out more about this intriguing sport

n the year 1900 a group of Hastings fishermen came together with the aim of raising money so that the children of impoverished families in the Old Town could enjoy a proper Christmas celebration. The end result was the Hastings Winkle Club. “The club now supports around forty charitable organisations each year,” says VicePresident Richard Stevens MBE. “Amongst the many good causes are local Scout packs, parent toddler groups, football clubs, a CT scanner for the local hospital, and a refurbished room for a lady with visual impairment. This year we hope to donate around £25,000.” Winkle Tossers in action Winkle Island, the on Winkle Island symbolic gathering place and spiritual home of the Winkle Island, the symbolic Winkle Club since the 1950s, sits at the junction gathering place and spiritual of All Saints Street and home of the Winkle Club Rock-A-Nore Road at the since the 1950s southern end of the Old Town – a short distance inland from Hastings seafront. This small traffic Leigh Dyer island plays host to activities such as some in the is the island’s famous ‘Hastings Old Town Week’ and ‘Jack in centerpiece and the Green’. A six-foot stainless-steel winkle statue acts as a charity designed by local sculptor and club member collecting box – whenever a coin is dropped inside, a bell rings. The island Winkle also features King, Wallie a Blue Plaque ‘‘Slogger’’ Hoad granted in 2011, a flagstaff, memorial benches and a club information board. The club uses Winkle Island as the venue for several of its outdoor events. Perhaps most notable amongst these is a Winkle Tossing competition, a sport which traces its roots back to the club’s early days. With prizes for both adults and children, Winkle Tossing is one of the highlights of the club’s Fantasy Island Event, which also features live music, stalls and street entertainment. Competitors toss winkle shells reinforced with glue to prevent them from shattering into containers of various sizes – the smallest ones carry the highest scores. The winner carries off a handsome trophy created and donated by a local artist. “Our next winkle tossing event will be held on Tuesday 6th August on Winkle Island in Hastings at 7pm, during Old Town Carnival Week 2019,” says Club Secretary Reg Wood. “It’s great fun and raises money for good causes – anyone can Winkle Island take part.” Fundraising Sculpture Amongst its many other fundraising activities,

the club holds an annual crazy golf evening and a popular three-day Jazz & Blues Festival. The club’s wishing well, located near to the famous Jerwood Art Gallery, is another collection point for fundraising. The nearby Fishermen’s Museum features a special Winkle Club display, which includes a life-size model of former member Winkle King Walter Hoad, Wallie ‘Slogger’ Hoad, resplendent in a suit of winkles which was especially made for him and never worn by anyone else. BEAUTY & FASHION

Wondering what to treat your feet to this summer? Sara Whatley is pushing the boat out with a new pair, but what will she pick?

W

hen I was a youth I had shoes spilling out my wardrobe – a rainbow of killer heels, ballet pumps and cowboy boots any teenage girl would be proud of. And now? Well, with a non-stop two-year-old and a garden to keep, I tend to rely on trainers, wellies and two pairs of flip-flops in the summer – one for the garden and one ‘good’ pair. Putting it like that is rather embarrassing; I think it’s time I treated my feet to something special, but which one shall I choose? FEATHERED FANCIES Fluttering down the catwalks for SS19 was an abundance of feather adorned footwear. All styles got the treatment, from the most practical of flats and flip-flops to teetering strappy numbers, with a huge variety of colourways and feather

It’s a fun and kitschy look – a bit like jelly shoes for grown-ups lengths. Matchy matchy plumes or bold contrasting colours, plumes front and back – anything goes! Wing your way across town in these numbers and you will be sure to feel light footed and fancy free!

74 SUSSEX LIVING | July 2019

Stride in THE BARELY THERE… Like the less-is-more look? Then this style could be for you. It seems to come in two different guises; on the one hand there are the strappy sandals – think spaghetti straps, a sharp pointed heel and a mere whisp of sole – and on the other it’s all clear Perspex. Used as straps, covering the whole foot or inserted in panels of fabric, it’s a fun and kitschy look – a bit like jelly shoes for grown-ups. PLATFORM SANDALS I have a trusty pair of gold strappy platform sandals which I dust down every year. They are so comfortable, and although they are high they are easy peasy to walk in, and great for a summer wedding as you don’t sink in the lawns! You can have loads of fun with prints and patterns on platforms as the big heel lends itself to adornment – look out for bows, bold neon colours, silky fabrics and embroidery.

STYLE MULES I have never been clear on what exactly a mule is, so just in case I’m not the only one, here is a definition: a mule is traditionally a closed-toe,

open-backed shoe with no constraint around the heel, which makes them lovely and easy to slip on and off. They can be high heeled, no heeled or anywhere in-between. And as they are still a mainstay on the fashion circuits they are available in a plethora of colours, fabrics and embellishments. l

BODY BUZZ

Get yourself and your circus skills in shape this summer with these fun games and challenges, writes Sasha Kanal. Fitness for all the family!

A Walk in the Park T

his summer it’s time to release your inner child out in the open and play some fun games at the park or in the garden. With your family or with your friends, it’s an easy and inexpensive way to socialise and make the most of warm days and bright nights and all the while getting a little workout into the bargain. HOOP DE HOOP Let’s start with hula hooping – a brilliant and fun way to get those hips moving and whittle the waist. The more you practice, the better you get and the more calories you burn in the process. Set a challenge for you and the family to see who can keep the hoop up the longest! JUGGLING IT ALL! Juggling is an amazing skill to learn and particularly effective at focusing the mind and building concentration. This ancient circus skill is said to burn up to 280 calories per hour and as you learn your coordination is

76 SUSSEX LIVING | July 2019

tested. As with most skills, the more you do the better you get. Go online to see what courses there are locally. Typically you learn to juggle using coloured scarves and an imaginary visual of corners and diagonals until you move on to juggling with balls. It’s all about using your peripheral vision as well as making sure your body is grounded and stable. Aficionados talk of toned arms from tossing the balls as well as strong thighs from squatting down to pick them up!

or plinth. Build a pyramid structure with the cans and get people to take it in turns to throw a tennis ball at them from a distance. Hours of simple fun and don’t forget to offer a prize! FREEWHEELIN! For the more limber and flexible amongst you, see who can perform the most cartwheels in a row on the grass. Perfect for the kids and the more acrobatic adults. It’s the ultimate in portable fitness too. LIFE’S A CARNIVAL Set up your own mini carnival in the garden or local park with some good old-fashioned games to keep everyone happy and involved. It’s a knockout! Get some old clean tin cans with no tops on and set them up on a garden table

TARGET PRACTICE! Set up a target on the ground – a picture of a favourite animal or TV personality will do. Purchase some mini beanbags and throw from a long distance towards the target. Those closest – win! This is a great workout for the arms without you even knowing it. All you need now is a picnic, a comfy rug to sit on and some sunshine. Enjoy! l

HEALTH HUB

Consultant Surgeon Mike Lavelle is our expert medical practitioner this month, shining a light on all things hernia

T

he abdomen consists of a cavity containing various organs, and the walls of the cavity are made up of layers of muscle, together with bones such as the pelvis and the spinal column. A hernia occurs when there is a weakness in the muscle layers of the abdominal wall, so that the contents of the abdomen, such as bowel, stomach or just fatty tissue can emerge through the weakness and come to lie under the skin, or move up into the chest cavity.

People who are overweight are more likely to develop a hernia The commonest type of hernia is an inguinal (groin) hernia, but other hernias include umbilical (belly-button) hernias, hiatus hernias (where the stomach moves up into the chest cavity) and incisional hernias (where a hernia occurs through a weak operation scar). Inguinal hernias occur more commonly in men. This is because the testes develop inside the abdomen and migrate down through a canal in the groin into the scrotum, and sometimes this canal does not completely close off around the blood vessels that supply the testis. In fact, some babies are born with an inguinal hernia and have to have an operation in the first few days of life. Normally though, inguinal hernias develop later in life, and although they may suddenly become apparent after a bout of heavy lifting, the weakness would have been there already. People who are overweight are more likely to develop a hernia, because the extra amount of fat inside the abdomen will stretch the abdominal wall and increase the pressure inside 78 SUSSEX LIVING | July 2019

HERNIA

HELP

the abdomen, tending to push the contents out through a weakness. A serious, but relatively rare complication of a hernia is strangulation. This occurs when the edges of the weakness in the abdominal wall pinch the contents of the hernia, leading to a loss of the blood-supply of the contents. This is a medical emergency, and if it is not treated promptly with an operation will lead to gangrene of the contents. This would have been a cause of death in the days before safe surgery.

Interestingly enough, most hernias are not painful, but in the case of a strangulation, the hernia becomes very painful and tender, and does not go away when the patient lies down, as is usually the case. Small hernias do not usually require treatment, but larger ones are treated with surgery. Nowadays, the standard treatment of most hernias is the insertion of a piece of synthetic mesh which is stitched or stapled into place. The operation is often carried out under local anaesthetic, and is very successful in the long run. Recurrence after operation is usually less than 2% for an inguinal hernia, and the complication rate is very low. l
