It hasn’t been an easy few months for anyone, but summer is in full swing and the county continues to plough on. We’ve returned after a break with an issue full of riverside homes, Spanish treats and local nature. Sara’s on maternity leave, so I’ve stepped into her shoes for a while. We hope you all continue to stay safe during these strange times.

PERSONALITY
Home by the S
ir Isaac Newton, Bill Gates and Albert Einstein have all played a pioneering role in helping to shape human history. What’s more, these brilliant minds are also labelled with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). An umbrella term which includes autism and Asperger’s syndrome, the symptoms and behaviours of those with ASD can vary enormously but it commonly affects levels of social interaction, communication and how the world is perceived.
SEA From a life of movie acting and travelling the world to becoming an autism advocate from her home on the South coast, Tara Leniston gives Lisa de Silva an honest account of her journey

Thankfully, society is slowly waking up to the benefits gained from differences in thought, perception and process, with more inclusive educational and employment opportunities for those with ASD. Yet dealing with a diagnosis can be traumatic. It’s an experience that former actress turned autism advocate, Tara Leniston, can empathise with. In 2012, her two-year-old son Dylan was diagnosed with ASD. “I felt scared, isolated and lonely after Dylan was diagnosed. I went into mama bear mode and did everything I could and explored everything available to try to help him, while my husband Andrew went into denial. We had completely different ways of dealing with it which put a tremendous strain on our marriage. What I really wanted and needed was to find somebody who could really understand,” she explains. From auditioning to star in a James Bond film, to being the mum of a child with ASD has been hugely challenging for Tara, but she has found a new purpose in life helping others to navigate their way through a diagnosis of ASD. Charming, engaging and compassionate, Tara tells me her story, offering advice, tips and strategies for living positively with autism. Born in Crawley, Tara’s family moved to Ireland when she was seven. During her teenage years the family enjoyed a globetrotting lifestyle living in South Korea, Hong Kong, Sweden,
Australia and New Zealand. It was in South Korea that Tara had her first taste of acting when she appeared on an English language learning channel. “Back in 1995, being a westerner with blonde hair in South Korea meant I was a little different to everyone else,” she laughs, and having caught the acting bug, Tara returned to the UK to study her craft at the Arts Educational School. It was a chance meeting with Jackie Chan while in Hong Kong that gave Tara her first big break when he asked her to audition for a part in his latest film. Not only did she get that part but she went on to feature in his 2003 film, The Medallion. After making several films with Jackie, Tara then played the female lead in the 2005 feature, Meet Me in Miami, before returning to work in Ireland on the TV serial, Raw. Tara auditioned for a role in the 2006 Bond film, Casino Royale, but the part ended up going to Eva Green. Then fate intervened. “I was due to return to Los Angeles but met Andrew on a blind date and didn’t take the flight home. Then I fell pregnant with Dylan and we moved back to London so I could resume my acting career.” Several years later and now mum to Dylan, she was asked to audition for the Bond franchise again. “Dylan had only just been diagnosed with ASD when I went to the audition. I was so overwhelmed I spent the entire time sobbing. As soon as I left, I rang Andrew and said I can’t do this anymore. I need to focus on Dylan.” Tara’s initial It was a chance reaction was to throw meeting with herself into learning Jackie Chan while everything she could about autism, trying in Hong Kong a range of different that gave Tara therapies in an effort her big break to help. “I became hyper-focused on Dylan and Andrew got shut out,” she explains. “Then when Dylan was four, Luca was born, putting added pressure on the marriage.” Although Andrew
TARA’S TOP TIPS FOR PARENTS 1 O nce a diagnosis has been made simply stop and take a breath. It’s easy to go into panic mode but remember that the autism hasn’t overtaken your child. They have always been that way – your child is still your child. 2 Keep communication channels open with your partner and family. Accept that people deal with a diagnosis in different ways and try to listen and support without judgement. 3 Try to focus on what you can do, not what you can’t do. Look for play therapy sessions and learn autistic-friendly games to play with your child. 4 Find a supportive community for advice, tips and keeping a sense of humour. 5 T ry to think of ASD as a unique way of seeing the world, like a superpower, and not a disorder that needs to be cured. 6 Do remember parental self-care and make time for yourself where possible.

The couple were separated for 18 months and during that time learnt how to listen without judgement to each other, the power of honest communication and how best to support each other. “Whether a marriage endures or not, as individuals you have to find a way forward,” Tara confides. “When you have children together you are tied forever. It essentially means that a bespoke funeral can be arranged in advance, completely unique and transparent as it only charges for what you wish to include. With that most visual focus of a funeral, the coffin, the choice used to only extend to the type of wood and fittings. Now you can choose willow for a low ecological footprint, or even cardboard, which is more robust than it sounds and allows people to write messages on the surfaces. Coffins can now be decorated with virtually any theme so a person’s passion can be boldly represented in a visual, memorable statement. Up-to-date technology allows unusual mementoes to be created for friends and relatives; Paul showed me how a person’s fingerprint can now be etched in silver to form remembrance jewellery and

Bereaved families can view their loved ones from a beautiful, airy room, filled with muted natural light. The deceased is revealed behind curtains which are printed with colourful birds and flowers, the very symbols of life. Plans are in place to include a service suite this year if social distancing allows; the Haywards Heath branch is already capable of hosting 50 people in their dedicated service suite under normal conditions. Memorial headstones can be arranged through all of the branches, and once lockdown is finally over, there will be a surge of memorial services to compensate for the current limitations in force. This is when the celebratory aspect of a person’s life will be fully expressed. Friends and family will be able to gather and remember the lived years, the achievements and the passions of their loved one in a way that is utterly unique to them. Paul

Many people are now opting to arrange a prepaid funeral plan to save their family the anxiety of decisionmaking when they pass away, and Paul says they will honour the price paid at the time, even if the person lives on for decades. Funeral plans utilise the UK’s largest and fastest growing independent funeral plan provider Golden Charter, which has been in operation for over two decades. This option also means that an individual can make choices about how he or she wishes to be celebrated and the possibilities for

“I

It was one of the first to be built on the street and was once surrounded by paddocks with horses. It just needed love. Admittedly, quite a lot of love.” The couple were living in their previous renovation, a former school in Surrey, but wanted a home by the sea so that their ‘watersports-mad’ family could be within walking

And as soon as that was finished, we’d move again.” However, this project almost didn’t happen when the previous owner tried to pull out of the sale a week before

exchange. Esther was in the latter stages of pregnancy with her youngest son Laurence and managed to talk him around. “I may have mentioned a lot that I was heavily pregnant,” she laughs. Then it was a case of making do when the new baby arrived. “The only thing we did initially was a quick fix on the main bathroom,” says Esther. “When you have a newborn, you really want a clean bathroom with plumbing that doesn’t sound like an aircraft taking off.” Esther worked with an architect to draw up plans to get through the planning permission process. From the start she was clear what she wanted to do to transform the threebedroom bungalow into a family home. An open-plan layout to open up the small downstairs sitting room and kitchen,

complete renovation of the existing downstairs bedrooms and a brand-new upstairs with two ensuite bedrooms. The house also grew at the back, with a substantial extension to the rear of the house to maximise indooroutdoor living. “When we bought it, the house had two nasty, plastic-fantastic extensions,” says Esther. “One on the side and one at the back. They had to go.” Esther wanted a spacious extension to make the most of natural light, so she chose a large ceiling lantern for the extension roof. Floor to ceiling bifold doors let in even more sunshine. “Then when night falls, we can use the amazing lighting that we installed all around the ceiling lantern,” says Esther. “We have a choice of white or coloured, it’s proper disco lighting!”
“We had the bench seating made from pews from the 12th century church where we got married,” says Esther. “It’s a lovely place to sit with the sun streaming through the bay window”

When the project began in October 2012, Esther replaced outbuildings with a self-contained summer house at the bottom of the garden, with its own kitchen and bathroom. “It was somewhere for us to stay while we renovated the house,” explains Esther. “I came down at weekends throughout the build and then when work reached a critical stage, I was on site every day. You need to be!” For the house, the contractor took off the roof, and installed dormer windows, two at the front and a doublewidth one on the back. Old red roof tiles were replaced with grey slate, and the show-stopping extension took shape. Esther then called on subcontractors for all decorating and finishing work, managing them herself. The only aspect of the project that evolved from original plans is the central wood burner downstairs. “Everyone was so annoyed when I insisted on that,” says Esther. “It did

mean more work, but it was worth it though. I deliberately chose one that fires out heat on both sides, which keeps the tiled-floor, open plan rooms cosy even in the winter. In the end, the pipes that travel through the upstairs are boxed in with electrical cables, so it worked well.” Esther incorporated original details from the house into the new build. A pair of gloriously peeling-paint portholes, which had been external windows, were replaced with new round windows and given a retirement home upstairs. They now reside in the dividing wall between the two upstairs bedrooms, and as well as being a design feature, they increase light flow between the two bedrooms. When work on the house was completed in November 2013, it was

time for the Burley family to do what they do so well – make their own driftwood décor. Esther’s sons, Laurence and his older brothers Theo and Bertie, collected beach wood, flotsam and beach pebbles, from which they created picture frames and sculptures. The couple’s collection of paintings by local artists now hangs on the walls, and Esther’s mid-century accessories provide colour pops against the white walls. Esther and her family are delighted with the results. “It’s a really easy house to live in, and the open plan downstairs flows well,” says Esther. The garden, once a jungle of sheds and greenhouses full of brambles, is now tamed – and a total sun trap. “Our east to west site gets morning and evening sun,” says Esther. “We planned the layout to provide ultimate privacy from neighbouring houses and protection from sea breezes. It is a wonderful place to relax.”
‘I chose a neutral carpet for the upstairs bedrooms,’ explains Esther. ‘It’s a hardwearing wool blend and doesn’t show the dirt. Perfect for a house near the beach!’

HOMES
Bring some sunlight into your home with our complete guide to conservatories, orangeries and bi-fold doors, says Hanna Prince
N
atural light can turn a home from dingy to dazzling – but how to create light-filled living spaces without a complete redesign? From conservatories to bi-fold doors, we look at the best ways of bringing the outside inside. COOL CONSERVATORIES Forget the bleak, mildewed boxes of the 1970s and 1980s – modern conservatories offer all the advantages of a brick extension without the hefty price tag. Specialist glass can retain heat in winter and reduce the sun’s glare in summer, meaning that your conservatory will remain usable all year round. Thanks to special glass coatings that react with sunlight to break down dirt, moss-blanketed conservatory roofs are also a thing of the past. Your budget and the shape of your house will both influence which style you opt for. The Victorian conservatory – think pitched roof, ornate roof fringe and bay front - is enduringly popular, as is
Let there

relatively modest outlay. Before you invest in a conservatory, think about what you want from the space and how it will integrate with the existing ground floor. How much sunlight does the area receive and will that affect your choice of glazing? Do you have the budget to
Moss-blanketed conservatory roofs are a thing of the past consider ‘smart’ features such as roof vents with builtin rain sensors? Temperature control is an important consideration as is the materials used – will you opt for UPVC or an oak frame,
low-cost polycarbonate or heat-reflective glass?
MEDITERRANEAN CHIC If you’re looking for a halfway house between a conservatory and a full extension, you may want to consider an orangery. Orangeries date from the 17th century, when they were built in the grounds of fashionable residences to cultivate Mediterranean fruit. Early surviving examples can be seen at Kensington Palace and the Kew Royal Botanical Gardens. With glass typically covering less than 75% of the roof area and semi-solid walls, they provide plenty of natural light while remaining cosier in winter and cooler in summer. Contemporary orangeries tend to have a brickwork base with solid columns supporting a perimeter ceiling. Frames can be UPVC, timber, aluminum or composite depending on your budget and design aesthetic. Lowerpriced orangeries tend to be fitted with flat roof lights, but traditional versions boast visually spectacular roof lanterns. Like conservatories, orangeries don’t necessarily require planning permission, but they can be adapted as living rooms, dining rooms, playrooms or even kitchens. The downside? You can

expect to pay roughly double for an orangery compared to a conservatory of equivalent size. BI-FOLD BENEFITS One of the best ways to maximise natural light in your living space is by adding bi-fold doors. Bi-folds work by concertinaing neatly together, offering the option of opening up an entire wall and creating an incredible connection between indoors and outdoors. When it comes to design impact, views and light, bi-folds are virtually unbeatable – but there are a few things it’s worth considering before you buy. Most people choose units that open outwards to maximise living space. There is also the option of installing a ‘traffic’ door at one end so that you can go in and out without having to fold the panels – a real plus in the chilly winter months. Frames are often constructed from durable and wallet-friendly UPVC. Timber is attractive but can
When it comes to design impact, views and light, bi-folds are virtually unbeatable be vulnerable to swelling, while aluminium offers good longevity but tends to be pricier. It’s also worth carefully considering glass type. Thermally efficient glass might be more expensive, but a better

insulated home will save on heating costs in the long run. If bi-fold doors are beyond your price range but you’re still set on the look and feel of a glass wall, there are other ways of bringing natural light into your living space. Sliding doors can provide a cost-effective alternative – and they won’t obstruct your view when closed. Other lightenhancing features include classic French windows, pivot doors and glass walls. l

KITCHEN
The custom-made cupboards are reclaimed oak from an American barn. The fish print was bought while holidaying in Montauk, Long Island, and was made using an old, traditional local technique where the fish is lightly inked and then pressed onto silk
Another benefit for the couple is the improved broadband speed. “Our old house was really high-tech. But, as a friend once said, it was a bit like having a really nice tap with no water coming out of it, because the internet connection was so bad,” laughs Anna. “We had one of our main offices there, so it was really difficult.” John has also just directed the world’s first ‘selfie movie’, Starvecrow. Quite a change from their previous home, the fivebedroom house – including an au pair suite – was built approximately 20 years ago and has the feel of a luxe, supersized fisherman’s hut from the outside, while inside it’s part chalet, part beach house. There are wonderful river views from the master bedroom and clever nautical touches in the living room, including a port-hole style window adorned by a lifebuoy, two pairs of wall-mounted vintage water skis and two glass cabinets housing taxidermy fish, one originally caught by Anna’s grandfather in 1942 in Staffordshire where she grew up.

The couple aren’t afraid to use splashes of dark colour, with the chimney breast in the main living space and the TV room both painted dark blue. As well as transforming the kitchen, the couple stripped out the bathrooms and totally redecorated throughout. The decking area that wraps around one side of the property is the perfect place for the family to unwind. Grey wicker outdoor furniture and a stunning driftwoodstyle table and benches – hand crafted by artisans from Winchelsea Beach – sit under a vine-covered pergola. Meanwhile, a vintage football table is the location of many a heated match between the boys! The house also has a jetty in the garden and the family can often be found there, perched on giant beanbags and taking in the river views. “We can swim from the jetty at high tide when the weather is fair,” Anna says. Since relocating to the town, Anna says their lives have been transformed because, as well as being able to walk to the shops, utilities are also more reliable. “Our previous home was so remote and, while we miss the quiet, having luxuries such as infinity broadband, gas and mains sewerage definitely makes life easier!” l Photos: Richard Gadsby/Narratives Styling & Writing: Amy Maynard/Narratives

HAVE YOU GOT THE INSURANCE YOU NEED? “At NFU Mutual Henfield we pride ourselves on taking the necessary time to help make sure we are providing the right level of cover for you to protect your home and contents should the worst happen.” Chets Modi, Agent When did you last walk around your house looking in cupboards to check your contents insurance is adequate? Do you live in a larger, higher-value home, or have a number of expensive items – perhaps jewellery and watches, fine art or collections, or even designer interiors with beautiful curtains and tech. Standard insurance may not be fully protecting you. You may be better protected by an insurance product which enables you to adapt your policy to meet your specific needs – such as agreeing values, increasing cover limits. WHAT IS UNDERINSURANCE? To be ‘underinsured’ means that the amount you’re covered for is less than the cost of rebuilding, replacing, or repairing. For example, if you had a fire at your home, and your ‘sums insured’ is only £30,000, but the actual cost to replace your contents is £100,000 then you’re underinsured and the reality is your policy won’t pay out beyond £30,000, leaving you with a hefty bill. DO YOU KNOW EXACTLY WHAT YOU OWN? Try to take account of the true value of everything you own – both buildings and contents. If you’re unsure of the difference between the two, imagine your house could be lifted off the ground and tipped upside down. Everything that falls out is contents. The rest should be covered by buildings insurance. Also don’t forget about items such as artwork or jewellery that you might have inherited or purchased a long time ago – their value may have changed significantly.
HOW CAN YOU BE CERTAIN EVERYTHING IS COVERED? Not only does Bespoke insurance from NFU Mutual offer many specialist features as standard, but unlike many other insurers who have moved online, the team at NFU Mutual value a real conversation with you to fully understand your needs, enabling them to tailor cover right down to the finest detail. Take time to walk around your house and use the list below as a guide to the contents you need to be insured for. Remember, you should look at how much items are to replace from new as in the event of a claim you can get new for old cover. Exclusions may apply. Living room:

Incorporate plenty of sharp grit with the potting soil to ensure free-draining conditions: grit should be approximately 1/3rd of the mix. This is a great way to grow frostsensitive forms as pots can be moved into a cool greenhouse to overwinter. Some non-hardy varieties produce long petals (quaintly known as ‘bunny ears’), while others bear multiple branching flower heads. A few non-hardies have unscented flowers. Instead they produce highly fragrant leaves that are often serrated at the edges; unlike the smooth, needle-like foliage of English lavender. All types of lavender should be lightly trimmed immediately after flowering. Removal of old growth allows sunlight to penetrate into the plant. This encourages the formation of new shoots that will flower the following year.l

Mixed planting with underplanting

hedges
Hedging is an important feature in many domestic and agricultural settings, designating boundary, providing habitat for wildlife and privacy for humans, and actually being a thing of beauty. Peter Erridge tells us more Camellia varieties
H
edges in our gardens are usually formal in that they are trimmed and dense, whereas country hedgerows around the edges of fields or roads are looser and referred to as informal. Either style can mark land boundaries and create an important habitat in the life cycle of the animal world, affording shelter and food: a conservation zone. Research has shown that the overall shelter benefit can extend for up to 16 times the height of the hedge. Wind speed can be reduced, depending on the foliage density, by for example 50%, providing shelter for nearby plants. Thus hedgerows have an ecological importance out of proportion to the land they occupy.
The word ‘hedge’ has European origins such as the Dutch Euonymus alatus Haag, meaning in autumn enclosure. The Old English haga meant haw referring to hawthorn, commonly found in hedgerows. Hedgehog appears to refer to an animal ‘covered in thorns’. Hedges, whether domestic or agricultural, are often considered to be a British feature but can be found worldwide wherever the topography is suitable. When creating a hedge or replacing one plant which has died, there is an opportunity to improve the visual effect by planting more than one species to give variation in texture or colour and produce a ‘tapestry’ effect, and a longer period of interest. The green common Beech is frequently used alone but by including a few plants of the copper form the visual impact is raised. Other options include mixing different types of evergreen plants especially when the foliage is small. Colour can be added by introducing deciduous plants which have flowers and berries, plus the season is lengthened if there is also autumnal foliage colour change. Replacing a dead specimen is easier in a line of mixed plants. Some examples, suitable in ultimate size, can be found among many species including Dogwoods, Rosemary, Witch hazels, Nandina, Berberis and Thuja.

A line of clipped trees forming avenues was a feature of 16th century Italian and French gardens. Around the same period another European garden fashion was to have elaborately shaped and interlaced borders forming ‘knot gardens or parterres.’ Modern border hedges, below knee height, often use Box plants which tend to be killed by Box blight. Many alternatives have now been found including varieties of Euonymus, smooth leaf Holly and Hebes. A hedge is a natural barrier which is less expensive and can outlast fences which can be created either by planting bushes or using ‘whips’, young saplings, to form a ‘quickset’ hedge. This is best carried out in autumn when the ground is wet to allow roots to develop more easily; this is the cheaper method but it does require more patience than buying mature plants. The ground at the hedge base acts as a seed bank and is marginally warmer leading to a longer growing season. The bases provide cover for a range of animal life including amphibians and small mammals. Mice and hedgehogs forage among the leaf litter and other decaying plant debris; a reason for not tidying this zone. Some bumble bees nest in holes in soil at the hedge bases or in surrounding tussock grass.
Old Blackbird nest
The Old English ‘haga’ meant ‘haw’ referring to hawthorn, commonly found in hedgerows At the start of the breeding season the emerging queens need to feed on the adjacent plants, and again when building up reserves ready for hibernation. Some bird species favour hedges for their nests. Robins, Dunnocks, Wrens and Whitethroats prefer the base whilst Blackbirds, Song Thrushes and Chaffinches use the upper areas. The rich flora of hedges acts as an insect reservoir. At the lower end of the food chain aphids flourish, and other insects lay their eggs among hedge plants where the leaves will provide food for the immature insects, who in turn
Nandina
become food for other insects as well as birds and bats. To attract wildlife a hedge needs to be properly and regularly maintained, aiming to create an even amount of vegetation at all levels by pruning a few lower stems each year. A well maintained hedge will provide sites for birds to nest, roost or look for shelter from heat or cold. Properly looked after the hedge plants will produce flowers and berries so trimming is best carried out after the winter food and shelter is no longer needed. The Wildlife and Countryside Act specifically protects birds during the breeding season between 1 March and 31 August. It is inadvisable to work on hedges during this period. l

LOCAL WALK
O
Lockdown
rdinarily at this time of year, we would be suggesting an extended venture over the South Downs. Remember Seven Hills from Hassocks or Six Churches from Berwick last summer? But these are different times and the prospect of recommending readers to follow a prescribed route didn’t seem like the right thing to do at the moment. Instead, it’s an opportunity to focus on a very local hinterland: yours and mine. From my home close to the heart of my town, I can walk to the centre of Ashdown Forest in less than a handful of miles. It’s an odd but delightful dichotomy. As lockdown commenced, for the first three weeks, my local roads felt empty. It was like Christmas Day, Boxing Day or New Years Day at 5am, but during daylight hours. I saw rabbits and squirrels confidently strutting along the tarmac. I took my daily hour of exercise as recommended. I discovered footpaths I’d never been aware of. I explored routes where I had previously thought, ‘One day when I have more time…’ Whether urban or rural, they shepherded me to all sorts of pleasant surprises I might otherwise never have discovered. Walks provided a rare opportunity to see spring unfold on a daily basis. Bluebells emerged from their winter slumber; unfurling

LET’S GET PHYSICAL
WELLBEING
Physical wellbeing not only boosts our bodies, but our minds, moods and sleep as well. Lisa de Silva explains more
W
hile we all acknowledge the benefits of physical activity on overall health, it also has an important role to play in improving mood, energy levels and sleep patterns. During exercise the brain floods feel-good chemicals, known as endorphins throughout the body. Consequently, regular physical activity can help to reduce anxiety and depression, along with enhancing our self-esteem.
DEVELOPING A WELLBEING REPERTOIRE As always, listen to what your body is telling you. It might be that your preferences change over time and so it’s a good idea to develop a repertoire of activities to suit your mood and the time you have available. Try a range of different activities that you feel will appeal to you. Eventually, you will find the ones that you enjoy and can build into your weekly schedule.
SMALL CHANGES Despite these benefits, many of us feel we do not have the time or energy to embark on an exercise regime. To help combat this, try to think of physical activity not as ‘exercise’ but as a ‘wellbeing’ session. Initially, think about simple ways in which you can increase your activity levels. These could include: walking/cycling to work/town or at least part of the way playing outdoor games with the family taking the stairs and not the lift stretching and toning while watching TV
RELAXATION Just as valuable as getting hot and sweaty is making time to rest, relax and recharge our batteries. When our minds are buzzing with tasks to complete, negative chatter and general stress, it is important to learn to switch off this background noise. Physical activity, such as yoga, is particularly good for this, but so too are hobbies.
WHAT TO CHOOSE? For more structured exercise, it’s important to find something that will suit and motivate you personally. Consider the following: do you prefer to exercise alone or with others? do you prefer to be outside or indoors? do you want to improve your ability, compete or simply have fun? do you prefer an instructor and organised class or prefer to work out at home? do you prefer calming activities or those which raise the heartbeat?
In our busy lives, hobbies are often neglected but they are a great way to switch off and relax. Any activity that absorbs you and allows you to lose yourself for a few hours will do you the power of good. For example, try painting, drawing, jigsaws, knitting, sewing, making music or safely spending time with friends. Do not feel guilty about taking this time for yourself because it will improve your overall levels of wellbeing and help you deal with life’s challenges, especially in the current climate. l

Update from St Wilfrid’s Hospice The hospice has been working hard during the COVID-19 pandemic, but now they’re appealing for your help
T
he coronavirus pandemic has meant that hospices have been more needed than ever, which has certainly been the case for St Wilfrid’s Hospice in Eastbourne. Over the last few months St Wilfrid’s has been operating at capacity and has had to adapt and introduce safe ways of providing the much-needed support and care for patients and their families alike. All clinical staff wear full PPE, whether in the hospice itself or visiting patients in the community – as do the Care at Home team, who have been busier than ever providing personal care in the home. Extra support services have been implemented including phone and video conference support, live group therapy sessions and telephone befriending for patients, which so far has successfully matched over 75 people with befrienders. The hospice has also expanded its Bereavement Support service to any bereaved person, and to all health and social care workers, in the hospice’s catchment area. The St Wilfrid’s Community Group page has brought together patients, families, staff and volunteers to share good news, lovely photos, links and ideas. It currently has over 670 members – why not join them on Facebook: facebook.com/groupsstwilfridscommunitygroup
HOW YOU CAN HELP SHOP
The hospice community shops spanning East Sussex from Eastbourne to Uckfield are now open with social distancing measures in place, so pop in and find yourself a bargain - second hand never means second best!
VOLUNTEERING
St Wilfrid’s is always looking to welcome new faces to its amazing team. If you have some time to spare and would like to make a difference to your local community do get in touch.
FUNDRAISING
St Wilfrid’s fundraising programme has been badly hit by the lockdown. The charity has devised new ways for people to support its work and an emergency appeal has been launched. Further details about all of these, including how to support through fundraising or volunteering, are on the hospice website: stwhospice.org. Please consider making a donation to its Resilience Fund at twhospice.org/resiliencefunddonation. Thank you.

orldwide, the orchid family comprises around 28,000 species. Of that multitude about 50 species are found in the UK and Jennifer Mugridge knows where to find a few of them. “I’m from Hurstpierpoint originally,” she recalls wistfully. “My grandfather was Ernie Hayes, the village postman. He was a well-known character, who also worked for the village undertaker. With a favourite pew in the church, he sat out of sight of the pulpit, dozing during sermons.” In the 1950s Ernie would take Jennifer’s family for walks on Wolstonbury Hill, the domed summit to the south of the village. “We would picnic in Solomon’s Gardens, a quarter of the way up the north face; a little hollow in the hill. We looked over the young trees, towards Danny House and Hurstpierpoint. The trees were much smaller

NATURE single stem, or branching out laterally through several buds. The density of orchid populations can fluctuate from year to year, according to Jennifer. Not all species flower every year, some flower only once a decade. Orchids aren’t just found on Wolstonbury Hill, as Jennifer was keen to point out. “They’re found all along the Downs, from Cissbury Ring to Chanctonbury Ring, above Ditchling and Alfriston, around Lewes and across to the Cuckmere Valley and the Seven Sisters.” Orchids possess bilateral symmetry, which means one side of the flower is a mirror image of the other. Easy to spot colours include shades of white, pink and purple. Many species are resupinate, so flowers appear to be upside down. In reality they’ve evolved landing pads in readiness for insects to touchdown and pollinate. Some orchids grow single flowers, though most have delicate clusters. “People still pick the flowers, which doesn’t help,” Fly warns Jennifer. “Enjoy them as Orchid they are, let them flower and spread their seeds.”

nina Balchin started In The Loop last August, applying experience gained from a food science degree, a master’s degree in oenology and viticulture at Plumpton College, and her work in the Sussex wine industry. Based on the outskirts of Uckfield, production started on the day she left her job as a vineyard assistant manager. “Last Christmas was spent entertaining family and completing my first batch of 100 bottles. My second larger batch was produced during lockdown.” Vermouth is fortified wine, flavoured with botanicals. True Vermouth contains wormwood, the herb whose etymology derives from the German Wermut. Wormwood’s stimulating properties aid digestion, making Vermouth a medicinal drink historically. Gnina’s wine comes from those South Downs vineyards that have raised the profile of English wine in recent years. It’s a simple assumption therefore; In The Loop drinks are high in quality, sophisticated and delightful to drink.
Gnina cultivates botanicals in her greenhouse. It’s an elegant hothouse of flowers, indulgent aromas and greenery, including her treasured wormwood plants. Others come from foraging trips close to home. “I find gorse flowers on the Ashdown Forest and wood sorrel in Fairwarp, both within walking distance.” Botanicals are picked when they’re most vibrant and infused into the wine. Gnina reveals, “In The Loop is the first UK company to produce an all English Vermouth made exclusively from English wine and only English botanicals.” Production is assisted by solar power. Combined with

South Downs wines, neighbourhood botanicals, a low carbon footprint and plenty of homegrown enthusiasm, it’s reassuring to know this product is part of the circular economy – hence the name. They’re vegetarian and one product is vegan friendly too. Gnina is quick to point out Vermouth makes excellent aperitifs, summer BBQ drinks, toasting drinks; or an uplifting component of cocktails like a Martini, Negroni or a Manhattan, or on its own with quality tonic water. Gnina has a range of three in current production: No.3 is a dry fruity rosé Vermouth made from English pinot noir; No.6 is a summer edition amber Vermouth infused with summer flowers; and No.18 is a dry white Vermouth made with English Chardonnay and infused with herbs. There’s no doubt In The Loop is a very impressive endeavour. A one woman enterprise; created, flavoured, bottled, labelled and sometimes delivered by a single person, the effervescent Gnina whose passion shines like rays of summer sunshine through early morning mist. “At markets I’ve enjoyed meeting people. I can explain the provenance of my drinks and answer any question people throw at me. I wanted to hug the person who bought my very first bottle, I was so happy.” Gnina’s aim is simple. “I want to bring Vermouth to a wider audience. I see its future ascendancy being similar to gins.” Her bottles have an air of collectability about them. But it’s the content that matters most… and how does it taste? It’s superb; it’s the best of Sussex bestowed in a glass. Stay local this summer, stay in the loop. A taste of Spain in Sussex
With lockdown affecting many family holidays this summer, you can still bring a taste of the Mediterranean sun to Sussex. Gillian Reay-Young recommends having a go at these Spanish classics
Spanish Tortilla INGREDIENTS 6 eggs 3 medium potatoes, peeled and diced 1 medium onion, peeled and finely chopped 1 small red pepper, deseeded and finely chopped 50g (2oz) chorizo sausage, finely chopped (use bacon pieces, if preferred) 2 small mushrooms, thinly sliced 2 tbsp freshly chopped parsley 3 tbsp olive oil
Scallops and prawns with cream and brandy INGREDIENTS 450g (1lb) scallops 225g (½lb) prawns 50g (2oz) butter 1 tbsp olive oil 300mls (10 fl oz) cream (more or less to your taste) 1 crushed clove garlic 1 tsp cornflour 3 tbsp finely chopped parsley 1 to 2 tbsp brandy Season to taste
METHOD 1 SautĂŠ the scallops and prawns in the butter and olive oil for three to four minutes. If the prawns are pre-cooked only put them in for the last minute. 2 Add the crushed clove of garlic. 3 M ix in the cornflour and add the cream, then season to taste. 4 W hen thick enough add the brandy, then stir in the parsley last of all. 5 Serve straight away on rice.
Note: Make sure the scallops are white and orange in colour, removing any brown bits as necessary. Generally, if you buy scallops in packets any brown bits are already removed.
METHOD 1 Heat two tablespoons of oil in a non-stick frying pan. 2 Add the potatoes and cook for eight to ten minutes until evenly golden brown. 3 Add the rest of the vegetables and the chorizo, and cook for a further six to eight minutes, stirring from time to time. 4 In a separate bowl, beat the eggs and season to taste. Sprinkle the fresh parsley into the mixture and stir. 5 Pour the egg mixture over the vegetables and chorizo. Then with a palette knife, help the mixture ooze into the gaps. Draw the palette knife around the edges of the pan to bring the egg mixture equally into the cooked vegetables; this takes about three minutes on a medium heat. 6 Turn and slide the tortilla on to a large plate. Put the remaining oil into the pan, then flip and replace the tortilla in the pan to cook the other side, for a further three minutes approximately. 7 L et the tortilla cool and then cover and put in the fridge until needed. For the strawberry ices 500g (1lb 2oz) Greek yoghurt 100g (4oz) caster sugar 100g (4oz) strawberries, or other red berries, hulled & quartered 10 whole strawberries, to decorate 20 ice-cream cones, to serve You will also need an ice-cream scoop Makes 20 SCOOPS
METHOD Whisk the yoghurt and lemon curd together in a plastic bowl for two minutes until light and aerated. Scrape down the sides of the bowls and freeze for one hour.
1 2
Break up the semi-frozen mixture with a fork and then whisk again for two minutes. Scrape down the sides again and freeze for a further one hour.
6
Remove the frozen ices from the freezer, allow to soften and make into balls with an ice-cream scoop.
7
Top ten of the cones with a scoop of the lemon ice and sprinkle with the citrus peel. Fill the remaining cones with the strawberry ice, decorate with the strawberries and serve immediately.
3
Repeat one more time, transfer to a lidded container and freeze for a minimum of four hours.
Advance preparation: slice the citrus peel up to one week ahead and store in an air-tight container.
4
Freezing: make the yoghurt ices up to three weeks ahead and remove from the freezer about 20 minutes before serving to soften, before making into balls.
Repeat the same procedure for the strawberry ices, whisking only the yoghurt and sugar together.
5
After the third whisking, add the strawberries, whisk again for ten seconds, transfer to a lidded container and freeze for a minimum of four hours.

Dame Vera Lynn
H
ere at Sussex Living, we were very saddened to hear of the passing of the Forces’ Sweetheart and Ditchling resident Dame Vera Lynn, who died last month at the age of 103. Dame Vera was renowned for performing songs such as We’ll Meet Again to troops on the front line during World War Two in various countries. In Sussex, she was known for her charitable work, including the Dame Vera Lynn Children’s Charity based in the county, which she founded to help young children with cerebral palsy. She, along with her daughter Virginia, were kind enough to allow us to feature them in the magazine many times over the years and our thoughts remain with the family at this sad time.

COMMUNITY CHAMPIONS WANTED
A local business is looking for Community Champions in the Mid Sussex district to reward them for their hard work during the lockdown. They’re after unsung heroes who have done something that little bit special for their community during these difficult times, with examples including shopping for a family member or friend who was selfisolating, cooking meals or dropping off prescriptions. Each winner will receive a £50 voucher for one of a number of local businesses taking part in the scheme. One person will be drawn at random every two weeks from 1 July to be the lucky winner. To nominate email: community@ tisshawssolicitors.co.uk or write to: 3 Hazelgrove Road, Haywards Heath, RH16 3PH.
SOCIAL EVENTS STILL ON HOLD
Memories of Crawley
Crawley Museum temporarily closed in March due to COVID-19, but the team said they are hoping to open to the public again in the next few months. It hasn’t stopped staff from keeping busy during lockdown though, with new website content being created. The museum is also sharing memories of the town and would love to hear from anyone who would like their memories to feature on their website or in the museum. The team have also been reviewing their current collections, hoping to gather more content to fully reflect the diversity of Crawley’s communities. For donations contact Holly, the museum curator, on 01293 539088 or email office@crawleymuseums.org www.crawleymuseums.org
SUSSEX REPAIR CAFÉ KEEPS GOING DURING LOCKDOWN A repair café run by volunteers in Sussex has managed to keep helping people during lockdown, despite the physical café being shut and limited resources available. The Chailey Repair Café is part of a worldwide movement in which repair requests on everyday items are given to groups who look at fixing them. Since lockdown started though, they’ve had to get more inventive. “The way that it works is that we put

the repair request out to our volunteers and anybody who is prepared to take it on makes contact and gives you their address,” said Bryan McAlley, founder and coordinator of the Chailey group. “You drop it on their doorstep and they’ll tell you when it’s fixed and can be collected.” Items so far have included a quad bike, two teddy bears and several sowing machines! Coffee with friends, country walks, golf, afternoon tea, pub evenings and holidays: these were just some of the events on the diary of a Sussex social club for single people before COVID-19 happened. When lockdown started The Group, which organises outings for unattached men and women aged 50 and over, were forced to postpone 40 events on the diary. The club are still around though, with members setting up Zoom and WhatsApp groups, as well as emailing, texting and phoning each other. Now the rules are starting to relax, The Group are looking forward to getting back the social life they had. “As soon as we are able, as well as the diary events, The Group will re-introduce its popular regular meetings in Worthing, Brighton, Burgess Hill, Horsham and Lewes,” explained the club’s chairman Tricia Bentley. www.thegroup.org.uk

He wrote particularly ordinary, adopted home county of Sussex his passion over 150 books, most of which are out of or even consistent for his dearest place shines brighter than print today. But if you lived between 1910that of our other adopted bard Kipling. 1950 then Belloc was one of Britain’s most illustrious writers; a member of the ‘big four’ along with G.K. To the inhabitant of Rottingdean and Batemans, Sussex was “the most marvellous of all foreign countries that I have ever Chesterton, H.G. Some of Belloc’s children’s books have never been out of print and their impact is arguably Washington, nestled north of the South Downs and mentioned in Belloc’s writing greater than Rudyard Kipling’s. The Jungle Book is undeniably Kipling’s greatest children’s work, but his tales of empires remain out of vogue. Children today don’t dream of leading African kingdoms or Indian travel, but Belloc’s themes of naughty children still resonate in David Walliams’ work. Walliams, one of the most influential childrens’ authors today, is a clear literary descendent of Roald Dahl, who himself was heavily influenced by Belloc. The adult Roald later admitted his love of Belloc’s writing; as a child he had learnt all the books off by heart by the age of ten. A LOVE OF SUSSEX For Belloc, though foreign-born and a lover of worldwide travel, Sussex was more than that. A biographer, Hamilton, argued “his love of Sussex is the nucleus of love of Europe… and all mankind.” This is what makes him intriguing as “the most insular of men and the most cosmopolitan.” Peter Brandon wrote that Belloc “wrote of Sussex as if it were the crown of England and the South Downs the jewel in that crown.” This, along with his love of simple Sussex produce, means every July on Belloc’s birthday (27th July) we should have our own local Burns night, enjoying his verse and good Sussex bread, bacon, cheese and beer. He left us with some memorable verse and quotes, especially about his wife Elodie, who he walked across America to propose to, although her family were still less than impressed at the gesture. “So again good night – if I could follow the night round her long whirl around the bend of the earth – at last I should come to you,” suggests
no ordinary romance. Belloc never recovered from her early death in 1914. He is behind the famous line “Whatever happens, we have got the Maxim gun and they have not,” and one we might struggle with at the moment: “We wander for distraction but we travel for fulfilment.” Belloc’s masterpiece is The Four Men: A Farrago, which is the tale of a walking tour of what appears to be four men across Sussex, but it is far more than that – it is the essence of Belloc and his love of Sussex distilled. Belloc wrote: “When I am dead, let it be said, that his sins were scarlet but his books were read.” Belloc’s sins were at times scarlet, but The Four Men alone is the reason why this overlooked Sussex bard should indeed continue to have his books read and in much greater volume. l View around 18,000 photographs and pictures on free-to-use websites provided by West Sussex Record Office and the County Library Service. The Devil IN SUSSEX
The Devil has been a frequent visitor to Sussex for many years, trying as he might to thwart the development of Christianity. Peter d’Aguilar revels his malevolent doings in the county
I
f legend is to be believed, the Devil has been engaged in guerilla warfare against the advent of Christianity in Sussex for many centuries. Initially, Sussex was slow to adopt Christianity; as its muddy roads, dense woodland and marshes made access to the county difficult for visiting evangelists. However, once the locals converted from Paganism, it spread rapidly – much to the devil’s disgust. There are many colourful accounts of the Devil’s activities in Sussex. His famous conflicts with St Dunstan appear in several
local legends. The Devil’s Dyke on the southern outskirts of Poynings, is rumoured to be where both he and his wife lie buried. The northern entrances to several churches around the county are known as the Devil’s Door – outside which some superstitious Sussex folk believe Satan will be waiting for them. Sussex men have recklessly challenged the Devil to contests. Others have forged Faustian pacts with him, often with their souls at stake. A number of places around Sussex bear his name – the Devil’s Book, the Devil’s Ditch, the Devil’s

Bog, the Devil’s Road, the Devil’s Race, the Devil’s Humps, the Devil’s Jumps, the Devil’s Chimney, the Devil’s Footprint, Devil’s Rest Bottom – not to mention Hell’s Corner in a Horsham churchyard. The Devil, or Satan to his friends, also goes by a number of sinister names in Sussex, amongst which are Old Nick, Old Scratch, Old Harry, Poor Man, Naughty Man and Mr
The Devil’s Dyke apparently came about as a result of his attempt to drown the inhabitants of the Weald Grimm. Sussex Mummers generally refer to him as Beelzebub in their plays. His wife is sometimes known as Dame Dark. Satan tended
to show his disapproval of Christianity by leaping from place to place, tearing up chunks of the countryside and throwing them about, as well as mischievously moving churches from one location to another. The Devil’s Dyke apparently came about as a result of his attempt to drown the inhabitants of the Weald by digging a channel inland from the sea through the South Downs. The earth he removed
became local landmarks such as Cissbury Ring, Chanctonbury Ring and Rackham Hill. Fortunately, a vigilant old lady spotted his antics and fooled him into thinking that dawn was breaking – thereby foiling his efforts. Rumour has it that anyone who runs seven times round his grave at Mount Caburn will prompt his reappearance. Other nearby examples of his earthmoving endeavours include the Devil’s Punchbowl in Surrey, Torberry Hill near Harting and even the Isle of Wight. It could be argued that Satan’s greatest human nemesis was St Dunstan, the tenth century blacksmith and Archbishop of Canterbury. Most of the skirmishes between these two legendary foes seems to have taken place in the picturesque village of Mayfield. Perhaps the most famous of these encounters happened while Dunstan was working at his forge. The Devil appeared, disguised

as a comely maiden, and tried to tempt the holy man. Dunstan spotted the cloven hooves beneath his dress and grabbed Satan’s nose with his red-hot tongs. On another occasion, the Devil threatened to destroy all the houses in Mayfield. Dunstan persuaded him to spare any buildings with horseshoes hanging outside – an unusual decorative feature back in those days. The Devil agreed and, in the nick of time, Dunstan managed to nail horseshoes to every house. Undeterred, the Devil began to shift the village’s newlybuilt wooden church off its
axis, which Dunstan was forced to rectify several times. When the Normans replaced it with a new stone church, the Devil made a number of attempts to hamper its construction. Happily, after several additions and renovations, it still stands today, appropriately dedicated to St Dunstan. The Devil continued to do everything in his power to prevent the building of new churches. He even stole the steeple from Brookland church, on Romney Marsh in Kent. St Dunstan again caught up with him and, using his celebrated tongs,
LOCAL COMPANY ESTABLISHED OVER 30 YEARS
forced him to abandon the steeple somewhere near Hastings. After each devilish encounter, Dunstan habitually cooled his tongs in local springs; lending the waters their health-giving chalybeate content. Across the ages, Satan has used several different methods of interfering with churches; by moving them to inaccessible locations, purloining building materials or trying to set them on fire. However, most of his efforts have been thwarted. It is believed that the Devil hid buried treasure in a couple of places in Sussex, notably at the Trundle hillfort near Goodwood and the barrows at Clayton Hill just north of Brighton. As yet, no one has succeeded in unearthing it. It’s always a risky business entering into a pact with the Devil, but a smuggler named Mike Mills once beat him in a foot race through St Leonard’s Forest near Horsham, saving his soul in the process.
A poacher from Northchapel was less fortunate; he refused to go home after a night of heavy drinking in the village inn, shouting “May the Devil burn me if I do.” When the landlord opened up the pub in the morning, he encountered a large pile of black ash smelling strongly of brimstone. Mad Jack Fuller, the eccentric Georgian squire of Brightling, tried to keep the Devil out of his tomb by having broken glass sprinkled on the floor. Nevertheless, it is believed that running backwards around the tomb seven times will summon the Devil, or possibly the ghost of the squire himself. Around the country, there used to be a tradition of rising early on Easter Sunday to watch the sun dance in celebration of Christ’s resurrection. In Sussex it is said that the Devil always manages to frustrate this custom by placing hills, trees or clouds in the way. Always the trickster! l Reference: www.sussexarch.org.uk

“I found Carewise helpful in getting referred to a care fees specialist who was able to advise me on the options of funding my Godmother’s care fees. This enabled me to make an informed decision on the most suitable option. As my Godmother was aged 92 in a care home and lacking capacity, I had to act as her attorney which is a great responsibility. My decision to purchase an annuity provided peace of mind, knowing that her care fees could be paid for the rest of her life”. Mrs G, East Grinstead

ow, I know this COVID-19 is very serious, but I’ve got to be honest: for a dog with separation anxiety, there has been some positives to the situation. For starters, ‘Them Indoors’ have both been at home 24/7, and walking the dog suddenly took on a certain gravitas as the ‘allowed’ exercising activity. As I’m not terribly good with other dogs, social distancing really hasn’t been an issue, although ‘Her Indoors’ long chats with other villagers have been a bit trying; I’ve learnt to lie down comfortably if it looks like things are going on a bit. I suspect that the government might have had some canine input into policy-making as pet shops have been allowed to remain open for our food, but vets for routine appointments and groomers have been shut. As a result, I’m beginning to look like a Wookiee on a bad hair day, but then that’s nothing compared to ‘Her Indoors’… Then there’s been the working situation. ‘Him Indoors’ has been furloughed but ‘Her Indoors’ has moved

COVID-19 has infiltrated every aspect of our lives, including our vocabulary. In a previous age that historians are already referring to as ‘BC’ (Before Coronavirus), a casual remark such as, “Guess who I bumped into in the supermarket today?” was wholly innocent and uncontroversial. That phrase is now loaded with awkward connotations, suggesting an antisocial faux pas. We’ve all been there; smiling politely as we nervously dodge around a fellow shopper who, in turn, is nervously trying to dodge around us. Last October, someone at Adur District Council contacted me with exciting news. It had taken four years, but my name had finally reached the top of their beach hut waiting list. After a formal viewing (7ft x 7ft – it didn’t take long) and the paperwork duly completed, the hut was mine. My long-suffering husband and I spent a chilly but marvellous December afternoon eating a celebratory picnic in the hut, while admiring the view of the wind farm through a persistent drizzle. Just a few months later, lockdown rules prohibited the use of beach huts; I now had a hut, but couldn’t visit it. The irony of the situation was hard to ignore. Wretched COVID-19 has bought heartbreak to so many. My family and friends are well, so my little woes are pathetically insignificant, but it’s the small things in life that often cause the most frustration. Perhaps the recent easing of restrictions will allow a hint of normality to return. I certainly hope so.

RADIO’S TEN THOUSAND TINS More Radio’s breakfast team Tom, Lou and Jack tell Jamie Crow about the station’s food bank donation campaign to help struggling families across the county
D
uring these unprecedented times, food banks across Sussex need your help to support families struggling to put food on the table. That’s the message that Tom, Lou and Jack, the new regular line-up on More Radio’s breakfast show, are trying to get out, as they front the Ten Thousand Tins donation campaign which returns for a second year. “Food banks are needed more than ever before, especially after what’s happened this year,” says Lou Nash, who’s been on-air at More for nearly two years. “It’s been such a tricky few months for everyone, but with so many people suddenly out of work, a lot of parents are struggling to put an extra meal a day on the table for their children who are at home, so it’s a really difficult time.” The station first ran the campaign last year, with the aim of collecting 10,000 tins of food through donations. These were distributed to food banks and food poverty charities across Sussex. The target was hit, so the station decided to bring it back for a second go. It’ll be the first time presenters Tom Evans and Jack ‘The Lad’ Hayes have taken part, after they joined More from previously working together at Heart Sussex. Jack, who’s been on the airwaves
in Sussex for over 15 years, became part of the breakfast team at the end of 2019, while Tom completed the new line-up earlier this year. “It’s like we’ve never been away,” laughs Tom. “We’re loving being back on local radio and we’ve had such an incredible wave of support from our listeners.” “It’s fantastic to be able to get involved with this campaign,” says Jack. “With what’s been happening in the world, a lot of local food banks have sadly seen their busiest months ever since the pandemic started. It’s essential that we run fundraisers like this to do our part and help those in need.” The campaign started this month, with donation points located at supermarkets across Sussex, a full list
of which can be found at the station’s website, moreradio.online. “As radio presenters it’s so great to have this platform where we can talk about the good work these charities do,” says Tom. “We want to do our bit to get as many people as we can to donate, so we can support those places and the families that need help most.” “We couldn’t wait to get started with this,” adds Lou, “so please keep listening and take a look at our Facebook page where we’ll be posting about what we’ve been up to.” l You can catch Tom, Lou and Jack on More Radio Breakfast on weekdays from 6am to 10am. Listen on FM (107.7 Worthing, 106.4 to 106.8 Mid Sussex, 107.5 Eastbourne and 107.8 Hastings), DAB and online at moreradio.online

A simple process of logic is all that it takes to solve each puzzle in this game. Put the numbers 1 to 9 in each vertical column and each horizontal line. Each number must appear only once in each column and line and in each of the 3x3 boxes in the grid.
1. Security (6) 2. Order to be detained (6) 3. Lime tree (6) 5. Wall painting (6) 6. Root vegetable (6) 7. Songbird (6) 9. Republic of Ireland (4) 10. Nipple (4) 13. Fertiliser (5) 15. Perch (5) 18. Each number in the grid represents a different letter of the alphabet. You have three letters in the control grid to start you off. Enter them in the appropriate squares in the main grid, then use your knowledge of words to work out which letters should go in the missing squares. As you get the letters, fill in other squares with the same number in the main grid and control grid. Check off the alphabetical list of letters as you identify them.

MONEY MATTERS
Tax returns
AND THE BUDGET
S
lowly we are emerging from lockdown. I am hearing different stories from different people and it is quite amazing how one person’s experience of lockdown can be so different from the next person; some people have coped really well and turned it into a positive experience, some have been able to adapt and others have had the worst of times. The financial assistance offered by the government has, on the whole, been well received and has certainly helped a lot of people, although no one set of rules is going to satisfy everyone and some have suffered quite badly. I don’t intend to run through the various grants and assistance here. The information is freely available through several sources, including our regular newsletters and the very useful gov.uk website. However, I will give a brief reminder to anyone who is finding it difficult to pay their self assessment second payment on account by 31 July 2020. If the difficulty is due
With many businesses facing financial uncertainty right now, Robin Stevenson takes us through the guidelines on July tax returns and his predictions for the budget to the impact January 2021. I am expecting some of coronavirus Of course, serious tax hikes then they have not having to pay the option to tax now sounds going forward defer making attractive, but the July tax remember that payment until 31 January it is adding another amount 2021. HMRC have announced of tax falling due on 31 they will not charge interest or January, which can already penalties on any of the deferred be an expensive month for self payment on account, provided assessment taxpayers. it is paid on or before 31 I am hoping that sometime towards the end of the year, HMRC will announce a further deferral or the opportunity to pay the increased January payment over a number of months, because it seems obvious to me that everything isn’t going to be right by January. Incomes,
whether they be earned or investment income, are still likely to be under pressure for some time yet. Whilst I have been generally pleased with the government assistance and I feel sure the furlough scheme has saved many jobs, it will all need to be paid for. I am expecting some serious tax hikes going forward, with the treasury having announced a budget for 11 July. MY PREDICTIONS FOR THE BUDGET I’ve seen reports that the budget might introduce a reduction in VAT as an attempt to get us spending again and refloat the economy, given that a large part is based on retail. Usually I’d welcome any reduction in tax and I will do this if it happens, especially if it helps us get back on our feet, but it will be with a little trepidation as to what tax changes might be coming over the horizon. I think the emphasis will be doing as much as possible to help people return to work and help businesses start to rebuild. I wonder if we might find ourselves with some reliefs, but also with some kind of super tax or emergency tax rate. The highest rate of income tax is currently 45%, so I wonder if we might see an even higher rate introduced for the high earners. I doubt it will be as high as the eye watering rates as the 1950s and 60s, but if the Government are to continue with their spending plans and recoup some of the costs caused by coronavirus, then I think there’s little alternative than to look to the taxpayer. If it doesn’t happen in the July budget, I wonder how long it will be until we start to pay? l
