LOCAL LIFE

A Life on

A

welcoming woof from Amber the Spaniel preceded the arrival of a genial David Hamilton at the door of his home near Billingshurst. Tanned and healthy, his welcoming hand reached out towards me with a sense of eagerness and jollity belying his 79 years. Sitting in the shadow of his apple tree as the remnants of summer began to fritter away around us, David was eager to tell me how he came to live in a 16th century farmhouse. David with The Three Degrees

David Hamilton’s broadcasting star has burned brightly for the best part of sixty years. Robert Veitch caught up with him at his Sussex farmhouse for a wander down the memory lanes of radio, television, Fuham and all things Diddy! David’s grandfather, George Hamilton, owned the house during World War II so master Hamilton was evacuated from his Manchester home to the Sussex countryside. Thus began a lifelong love for the place. After hostilities ended, David would visit during summer holidays until he was about fifteen and grandfather sold the farm. There would be no return for over sixty years and a moment of serendipity.

I’ve never worked a day in my life, I’ve always done something I love While in Dubai in 2005, playing a charity football match for the Showbiz XI, David was chatting to Junior Campbell, who had been in the band Marmalade. The topic of conversation meandered into property as Junior described his Sussex farmhouse to an intrigued David. Back in England and

invited to visit… lo and behold, it was the same farmhouse. A year later Junior wanted to sell and the Hamilton’s wanted to buy. Childhood dreams can come true, “I can walk across the fields that I walked with my grandfather’s sheepdog when I was a child and they’re just the same now.” Lady luck would strike again. David kindled a wartime friendship with a land girl called Daisy. Remarkably in 2006, she was still living locally, and despite being in her 90s she came to visit. A nostalgic time for both of them, reflecting on those bygone days. After the War, David lived in South London with his mother. A teenager, his future life would be shepherded by a love for music, words and football. “Sam Bartram the Charlton goalkeeper was my absolute hero. He seemed about nine feet tall when I watched him as a boy. Today his statue stands outside Charlton’s ground, The Valley, and it is nine feet tall!” Aged fifteen David sent an

unsolicited article to Soccer Star magazine, a weekly publication that ran from 1952-1970. To his surprise it was published and he was offered a weekly column paying two Guineas a week. “I did that for two years before I finally made the trip to their Cheapside office. After realising I was fresh out of school and not a 40-year-old journalist, they promptly relieved me of my role and dropped my column.” David’s next job came via the Fleet Street Youth Employment Bureau, as the mail boy inside the offices of Lew Grade’s Associated Television (ATV). The role offered daily opportunities to meet influential people and when asked what he wanted to do, David said he wanted to write. He became a trainee scriptwriter, working on Emergency Ward 10, before moving to Portrait of a Star. He recalled, “There was no internet back then, the hard yards were done the old fashioned way. When my first programme was broadcast I was sat on the sofa, watching with mother.” The teenage David loved radio, “I was inspired by Pete Murray on Radio Luxembourg and in time my hero became my friend. I knew that’s what I wanted to do with my life.” National Service commenced in Cologne, at Christmas in 1958. “I hated it. It was mostly square bashing. I went to the head of British Forces Network (now BFBS) and asked for a writing job. He offered me the job reading out the football results, which seemed to be some sort of joke. I was also a wireless operator. It all came quite naturally.”

With youthful fearlessness David informed the head of British Forces Network of the troops desire to hear rock ‘n’ roll, not Peggy Lee. Once offered a show on Sunday afternoons he played the likes of Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis and Little Richard. “I knew the troops would love it because I was one of the troops. My show was followed by a speech from the padre to cleanse the souls of the troops. They were different times,” he chuckled. David’s break in television came in 1961, as an announcer and newsreader for Tyne Tees TV. In 1963 he interviewed a new band few people had heard of… called The Beatles.

Terry Wogan was no big time Charlie, he was always able to laugh at himself In 1967 as the straight man on Ken Dodd’s ITV show Doddy’s Music Box, Doddy christened him Diddy David. “Ken was about half a foot taller than me and I’m 5’6” – that nickname got me well known. It’s quite affectionate really.” The infant Radio 1 came calling in 1967. David effervescently recalled the pioneering days of Radio 1 as good times with some great music. “We were purveyors of happiness. We were trying to cheer up the nation. It was tremendous fun.” His afternoon show on Radio 1 began in 1973 and from 1975 was simulcast on Radio 2. The

audience was enormous, the biggest in the UK at eighteen million. David reminisced, “I liked broadcasting in the afternoon, it meant I could go gigging in the evening. Each gig paid the equivalent of a weeks BBC wages.” By November 1977 and nearing forty years of age, it was time to retune the dial and Radio 2 became his permanent home. On television, David made several appearances on The Benny Hill Show. In a 1974 episode he compèred a male beauty contest called ‘Mr TV Times.’ On walks Benny in a green one-piece lycra vest and pants combo and “I had to introduce him as Ivor Biggun from Mill Hill, to which Benny responded, No, I’m Ivor Mill from Biggin Hill.” On The Tommy Cooper Show David was tasked as the interviewer in the ‘Fez to Fez’ skits. “Tommy never stuck to the

script, he was very unpredictable and I was always expected to keep a straight face.” There were thirteen Blankety Blank appearances between 1979 and 1985. “I was usually on the top row,” David remembers with a sparkling glint in his eye. “The show was mostly ad-libbed, tremendous fun. Terry Wogan was no big time Charlie, he was always able to laugh at himself.” As a lifelong Fulham fan, one of his greatest memories was Alan Mullery’s testimonial at Craven Cottage in March 1976. It featured most of the 1966 England World Cup team against a former Fulham XI. “Alan rang me up and asked a favour… if myself and Jimmy Tarbuck could play as last minute replacements for a couple of the World Cup XI. Jimmy was asked to deputise for George Cohen and I was supposed to be Alan Ball. There we were, in the changing room wearing England’s red and white kit, heading

out to play with Bobby Moore, Gordon Banks, Geoff Hurst and the rest. During the match I received a pass from Jack Charlton and made a cross that Bobby Charlton was able to score from. I have to thank Muller’s for one of the best days of my life.” As Fulham’s match day announcer from 1996-2014 David encountered several stars. Was Jacko really wacko, I wondered? David chuckled, “Michael Jackson was over to open the Harrods sale and looked about six stone, dripping wet. We had a brief chat and he was

very pleasant. At half time I announced Michael to the crowd, but he was half way around the pitch, by the Johnny Haynes Stand before the crowd realised he wasn’t a look-a-like. Tony Curtis came another time. He chose to run up the terraces and began to kiss the fans.” David remained with Radio 2 until 1986, moving into commercial radio with stints at Capital, Melody FM, Capital Gold, and others. He presented the first show on Worthing’s Splash FM in 2003, “I think Leo Sayer was

Ken Dodd christened [me] Diddy David – that nickname got me well known the guest that day. I had another show called ‘David Hamilton’s Million Sellers.” Splash FM has latterly evolved into More Radio. When Radio 1 turned 50 in 2017, David wrote a book recalling those formative years. Hot Shots, Big Shots and Potshots is an excellent read over 128 pages – a first-rate stocking filler this Christmas. David still works in radio, but here and there, not nine to five. His love for the medium is obvious, bubbling with enthusiasm as he speaks. He does a little for a London digital station and for BBC Sussex and Surrey. Pausing to contemplate the current crop of radio presenters, “Nick Ferrari is a really good journalist. Danny Pike is a very good interviewer on local radio who would be at home on national radio.” Harking back to ‘the golden age’ it’s the hardworking Tony

Blackburn who stands out, “He’s remained a household name for fifty years and lost none of his enthusiasm He’s the ultimate survivor. He was sat under the apple tree, in your seat, not that long ago.” Our time approaching its denouement David suggested I go home with some apples from his tree. One by one he carefully selected them. They weren’t big, they were diddy. They were also delicious. “I’ve never worked a day in my life, I’ve always done something I love,” reflected David as we parted under blue skies and aircraft contrails. Amber the Spaniel wagging her tail blithely, barking farewell as they faded from sight in the rear view mirror. l

East Grinstead has historically adapted and changed resulting in a town still prosperous and vibrant today. Ruth Lawrence outlines its rich history and all about one if its pioneering residents, Helen Beale

DAUGHTER OF

THE WEALD T

o walk through East Grinstead High Street is to sense a thousand years of history layered in its ancient buildings; the town was laid out by a descendent of a French nobleman who came over in 1066 with William, Duke

of Normandy. East Grinstead’s wealth was built on livestock, the leather trade and timber from the Ashdown Forest and later, the thriving coaching business which flourished due to the town’s strategic location between town and coast. When the railway opened

between London and the South coast, the town was bypassed but local businessmen and landowners brought about a branch line to Three Bridges and the town prospered once again. After WWII the population expanded rapidly once new homes were built to replace housing stock bombed during the conflict and now around twentyseven thousand people call the town home. East Grinstead Museum was moved to custom built premises in the historic heart of town in 2006 and houses over twenty thousand items interpreting the town’s heritage, its people, buildings, trades and institutions. Currently, a taster display of a larger exhibition at nearby Standen outlines the life of Helen Beale who became the first female officer in the WRNS during the First World War. In 1916, the Army created the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps to free up men from non combat roles and a year later the Navy followed

by creating the WRNS, soon known as The Wrens. Helen, whose parents had built Standen, was working as a Voluntary Aid Detachment nurse in London, Sussex and France and had family connections in the Navy and a friend, Sir Alan Garrett Anderson was Admiralty Controller. Helen wrote to him, asking, “I am terribly interested in this new scheme for women to do work for the Navy… I am making bold to ask you about it!” Her initiative paid

off and after mandatory officer training she was appointed as an Assistant Principal, based at Dover. Helen quickly found that integrating women already working for the Navy into the Wrens could be challenging as many did not want to become officers because of negative public attitudes towards women in uniform. Helen wrote in a letter, “the wretched girls already working in the offices don’t want to join and yet one can’t say they must at present because there is nobody to put in their place.” At that time, uniformed women were considered a threat to conventional roles of wife and mother but Helen had little time for outdated attitudes and wrote, “things must change in the fourth year of a

Helen became vice chairwoman of East Grinstead’s Queen Victoria Hospital war like this.” She was irritated by the “horrid tiresome rules about uniforms too, which annoy us considerably,” but she soon became promoted to Deputy Principal, which prompted her humorous aside, “the really amusing part of it is being called ‘Ma’am’ in proper style.”

There has been growing interest in Laser Lens Replacement (LLR) or lens exchange surgery. This alternative to laser eye surgery is more appropriate in those who are more than 50 years old. Roles for Wrens were initially domestic and secretarial but soon included drivers, wireless telegraphists, radar plotters, weapons analysts, range assessors, electricians and air mechanics; opportunities were opening up and Helen was again promoted to Divisional Director at Devenport, a large Naval port just outside Plymouth. She wrote apprehensively, “it is going to

After WWII the population expanded rapidly once new homes were built to replace housing stock bombed during the conflict be rather a ticklish job to take over this other place as head of the district,” but she persevered and found herself having to dismantle the service once the war was over. Men who had returned from war were being trained to do the jobs the women had done and they received double the pay of their female counterparts. Women in the Armed Forces were the targets of hostility as they were perceived to be occupying jobs that should be for men returning from the horrors of the Front and Helen herself was finally demobbed in 1919. ❖ Rolex ❖ Audemars Piguet ❖ Jaeger Le Coultre ❖ Breitling ❖ Cartier

She wrote sadly, “I hear it is decided that we are to melt away as we are no longer wanted… then nobody can say we are taking any ‘cushy’ shore jobs from the men.” Helen’s pioneering work in the Wrens was rewarded when she collected an OBE, and she received many fond letters from Wrens she worked with. One lady wrote, “my time in the WRNS has been just one of the happiest times in my life,” and another said, “you really are the best ‘Wren’

Officer in the world.” One of Helen’s legacies was that the work women did in WWI was used as justification for giving the vote to some women via the Representation of the People Act 1918, although full equality was not achieved until 1928. Helen was aware of the revolutionary nature of her Naval work and she donated her uniform and her work-related archive to the National Museum of the Royal Navy while her personal war archive was donated to Standen by a family member three years ago. The Wrens were disbanded in 1993 when women were integrated into the Navy and next year the Royal Marines are opening up their doors to women as well. Those early pioneers demonstrated the wide ranging capabilities of women and were part of a step toward work equality. The battles women still face regarding equal pay were noted a century ago in a letter

Helen wrote where she noted of her Director, “she pointed out that… there was still a great deal of work to be done in straightening up the world.” Helen later became vice chairwoman of East Grinstead’s Queen Victoria Hospital and she passed away in 1972, having played a vital role in putting women on the road to equality. CHARITY

It’s time to give the razor a rest for a month of marvellous moustaches. Join the ranks this Movember and see what you can grow. Sara Whatley tells us more

N

ovember is now the official month of the tash thanks to Movember. But this hairy story stands for more than just fashionable facial hair, it stands for men’s health: prostate and testicular cancer, mental health and suicide prevention. The mighty moustache has some fine history to it too, starting from the Middle Ages when good moustaches and beards symbolised good health. In the 1880s a more cleanly shaven look was fashionable. Then when society demanded that men be more respectable, beards and moustaches were left behind, unless they were neat and not bushy (1910s-1960s). Nowadays trendy moustaches are a look sported by many and seem to be growing in popularity all the time. With our pick of 10 iconic styles, why not make this the month you down tools and let your facial hair run free? CHEVRON Wide as well as thick, the Chevron is a classic no nonsense style; think Tom Selleck. Partially covers the top lip and requires little trimming. Most popular in the 70s and 80s.

WALRUS Looks like a Walrus’ moustache, of course! The big brother of the Chevron,

BE A

Mo Bro

whiskers are very bushy, cover the upper lip and are slightly rounded at the sides. A fine choice for a cowboy.

DALI An extreme version of the handlebar, the Dali is narrow, while the ends are pointed all the way up to the eye sockets. Quite surreal, much like its names sake, Salvador Dali.

ENGLISH Whiskers are worn long and pulled to either side of the philtrum (the dip running down from your nose). A distinguished look for the discernable gentleman. FU MANCHU Full moustache that starts near the corners of the mouth and grows strait downwards into tendrils hanging beyond the jaw line. A very iconic look.

HANDLEBAR Vary thick and bushy with longer twirled up ends. Will take time to twiddle and wax the ends each day. Named because of the resemblance of a bicycle’s handlebars.

HORSESHOE Super thick, bushy and manly with vertical extensions that boldly go from the corners of the mouth down to the jaw line. Looks like a horseshoe.

IMPERIAL Whiskers that grow from both the upper lip as well as the cheeks are connected in this bold style which is worn

with large upwards curls at the ends. PENCIL This moustache gets its name from the resemblance of a line drawn with a pencil, running parallel to the upper lip. Very neat and closely clipped with a wide gap between the nose and moustache.

Movember stands for more than just fashionable facial hair, it stands for men’s health TOOTHBRUSH AKA the Charlie Chaplin. This is a thick moustache worn just below the nose, and not much beyond it. Not so popular since Adolf Hitler was a fan. l

HISTORY

THE EVELYN CHESTNUTS Peter Erridge tells the story of an ancient avenue of chestnut trees lining the way to Felbridge Park

D

id you know there is an ancient chestnut avenue in Felbridge? Pass along the Crawley Down Road and there they are. On the north side of the road from Felbridge School westwards are the remnants of two lines, originally each of 52 Spanish chestnut trees (Castanea sativa); only 42 survive today. Not easily seen, just to the north, is a second line which together formed two avenues, one towards Crawley Down the other to Copthorne. They were planted in 1714 for the estate owner William Evelyn and are now known as the Evelyn Chestnuts. The trunks of some are two metres in diameter. Extensive research has been carried out by the Felbridge & District History Group to determine when and why these trees were planted. The two lines of trees are shown on ancient maps dated 1748 and 1768 leading to Felbridge Park, west of the present A22. Within the park there was just one avenue leading to the house. It has been concluded that they were planted to mark the restoration of the Protestant Monarchy. The results

of the research can be viewed at www.felbridge.org.uk Until broken up in 1911, Felbridge Park estate managed the chestnut avenues, since then it has lacked the earlier protection. Ancient trees are always under threat, judged as being unsafe and then felled, whereas judicious cutting back of unsound branches might suffice; the Evelyn Avenue is no exception. On occasion local residents and Felbridge Parish Council have interceded and limited the damage to this local landmark. Since the estate breakup new landowners have wished to develop the area for housing, which has necessitated removal of some of these old trees. A few felled trees have been replaced

The lines of trees are shown on ancient maps dated 1748 and 1768 and are now up to 60 years old. These will eventually blend in; but not the Horse Chestnuts (conker trees) planted in 1969! Avenues of trees were first planted in mainland Europe during the 16th century to form shaded walks; this became fashionable in England during the next century. Other purposes for the planting included leading the eye to an edifice, a mansion or manor house, or to form a decorative route along which carriages brought visitors. A variety of medium height deciduous tree species were used, usually sweet chestnut, lime or oak. At the end of the last ice age Sweet Chestnut trees spread from south-eastern Europe possibly by invading armies. With an edible seed, the chestnut was carried as a food source. The Romans are thought to have planted the nuts in Britain to produce future food. This was long term planning as it is about 20 years before a crop

of chestnuts can be harvested and used to produce chestnut flour. The trees in this avenue have deeply furrowed bark and decay of the wood is evident. This is a natural process in the life of trees creating habitats and food for insects and fungi, whilst holes in the trunk and branches serve as nest sites for birds and bats. Spanish chestnut trees are known to live for 700 years so in a plant caring community these remaining trees could be around in the 24th century. l

ADVERTISING FEATURE the commercially focused approach they wish to steer away from. Now growing most of their own plants, Garden Sage employ Joe Curling an horticulture graduate from Plumpton College alongside David Jermyn, a knowledgeable plantsman with some 40 years experience in the industry.

PLANT& FEED Working together as happy bedfellows, Garden Sage Nurseries and Sussex Mother café are all about plants, ideas, knowledge and food, as Ruth Lawrence finds out

I

t’s been a couple of years since I wrote about the wonderful new nurseries created by enterprising couple Ed and Josie Nugent. My visit this week revealed how Garden Sage has developed, now sharing their expansive site with Sarah and Tom who have recently opened their exciting café, workshop and craft space, Sussex Mother. Named after an old local variety of apple, Sussex Mother offers something unique – a beautiful, light filled café where adults can eat, talk and browse while kids can enjoy themselves nearby in a large, purpose built play area. It’s a perfect mix of informality and great food; a look at their menu revealed local meat dishes alongside tasty vegetarian and vegan fare and scrumptious homemade cakes by Tom’s mum and Sarah. The hugely popular Sussex Charmer cheese toastie with apple chutney caught my eye as well as the exceptionally good coffee from Lindfield Coffee Works. Townings Farm in Chailey provides superb local bacon and sausages (meat and vegan weekend fry ups are a speciality) and Sarah and Tom’s ethos is ‘local, seasonal and homemade by ourselves.’ The couple have ambitious plans for Sussex Mother: a Christmas Market will take place on the 1st and 2nd December where mince pies and mulled wine will accompany high quality local craft stalls and Garden Sage will be selling Christmas trees nearby. Workshops by

local craftspeople and a young gardeners club are in the pipeline and tai chi classes and a yoga/supper club are regular features now. Ed and Josie share similar values with Tom and Sarah, placing prime value on personal connection with the customer – it’s a far cry from

In spring, they’ll be offering a planting, pruning and maintenance service and an informal programme of talks, workshops and supper clubs. People have taken so enthusiastically to Garden Sage, partly because of the personalised advice that is freely offered on all aspects of gardening and planting. If you have a specific question or problem, Ed and the team will take the time to thoroughly explain potential solutions for your own garden; you can always grab a coffee from Sussex Mother and sip while chatting garden tips among the plants. They are also broadening the educational side of the business at Garden Sage and plan on holding workshops in Tom and Sarah’s café space. This is organically forming into a shared area where both couples combine their similar values and ethos into a warm and welcoming place where ideas, knowledge, food and plants happily coexist. l Garden Sage Nurseries and Sussex Mother Allwoods, Hassocks, West Sussex BN6 9NA 01273 041785 info@gardensage.co.uk gardensage.co.uk info@sussexmother.co.uk

s frost takes a firm grip on our gardens, winter flowering shrubs step into the spotlight. Many are deciduous and have ‘nude’ flowers – blooms that are borne on bare stems. These flowers may be small in stature, but they take centre stage in a wintery landscape – and they are often scented too. Winter flowers have a curious quality not usually found with their summer counterparts. Stand next to them and they seem to have little or no scent. Their perfume is best appreciated when you are several metres away and suddenly find yourself enveloped in a mysterious cloud of exotic perfume. Planting some of these wintery beauties will help shake off the blues. Remember; if winter has arrived, then spring cannot be far behind.

Sarcococca orientalis ‘Christmas Box’ spends most of the year looking like a nondescript evergreen shrub. However, from December through to early spring it produces a mass of tiny white flowers with a heady honeysuckle-type scent. It will stand an occasional light trimming and can be used for ground cover or a hedging plant, (max 1 metre.) Hamamelis mollis ‘Witch Hazel’ – a native to central and eastern China – is incredibly hardy and produces spidery sulphur-yellow flowers on bare branches. It will grow between 2 - 4 meters high. Flower arrangers will beat a path to your door and beg for a stem or two – a single sprig will scent an entire room.

The antique dining table and chairs in the bohemian dining room belonged to James’ grandparents. The art deco mirror was from an antique shop in Southwark. The piano was a wedding present. “We’ve gone for quite an eclectic look in here,” says Katy

Katy and James’ five bed Hoxton home is an elegant family haven exuding a natural grace. Its purchase, in a very popular area where houses sell like hot cakes, was the result of a canny combination of correct timing, perseverance and good old lady luck. James and Katy fell in love with the parks, shops and large Edwardian houses in London’s Hoxton, but knew they’d have their work cut out for them if they wanted to buy as the market was moving so quickly. They decided to pin their hopes on a hand written letter, posting copies through the doors on a

few chosen streets, and were subsequently elated upon receiving a call a few days later. “Malcolm had owned this house for around 20 years and was looking to move out of London,” Katy explains. “He admitted the place needed a bit of work and we jumped at it, as we were keen to take on a project.” The house had few original features and was in a pretty bad way, needing to be completely updated and restored. After a couple of viewings and a few emails back and forth, buyer and vendor agreed a price. In the meantime, James and Katy’s house had gone on the market and, in less than a week, sold. In the midst of all of the excitement about buying and selling in such quick succession, they discovered some other happy news. “We had a slight wobble when we found out that I was pregnant,” Katy remembers. “Were we really prepared for a building project and a baby?! But we decided we loved

ARLO’S BEDROOM

The most exciting feature about this room is the very dark blue walls. “I knew that we would be filling the room with bright kid’s things so wanted dark walls to set off rather than compete with all the colours,” Katy explains. The chair belonged to James’ great uncle. The cut out bear on the fireplace was used in a television advert and Arlo’s owl toy is from Sri Lanka, where the couple went on holiday when Katy was pregnant 36 SUSSEX LIVING | November 2018

James and Katy fell in love with the parks, shops and large Edwardian houses in London’s Hoxton

the house and were prepared to make it work.” They got the keys in May 2012 and their builders started on site two weeks later. In a whirlwind eight months the couple dug out a basement to add a large kitchen-diner and larder, extended into the loft, added two bedrooms and two bathrooms and finished everything to an exceptionally high standard. “It was a roller coaster,” Katy remembers. “Watching them dig out the basement and half expecting the house to come crashing down around us was terrifying; having to make decisions about fittings and colours while the house was still a building site, and having to trust that my instincts were right, was really nerve-wracking.” And of course, Katy was pregnant in the middle of it all. “Having a baby halfway through was pretty daunting. James was pacing the hospital corridors on the phone to the builder while I was in labour.” The day after they got out of hospital Katy was back on site, making sure everything ran to schedule. “Arlo was surprisingly content to spend the first three months of his life strapped to my chest as I walked round a building site talking about stud walls and grouting!” laughs Katy.

The drinks trolley was secondhand, and the beautiful collection of decanters also belonged to James’ grandparents

And of course, it was all worth it. “Seeing the new kitchen walls go up and our kitchen units being installed was really exciting; then getting to the end and sitting back to enjoy it all has been incredibly rewarding,” says Katy. James and Katy have filled the house with a bohemian mix of artwork, antiques and vintage items. “I’m a huge fan of rummaging through charity shops, house clearance sales and car boot sales,” Katy says. “I recently got a beautiful old poster of a British Museum exhibition held in the 1970s from a house clearance shop. You can find the most interesting, unique pieces in these places.”

Katy’s proved that, thanks to her project management background, she is not only a dab hand at planning renovation projects, she also has a keen eye for colour and texture; combining natural textiles and rich earthy tones in a colour scheme that is relaxed, yet bold. The couple are not afraid of colour; the midnight blue walls in Arlo’s room and rich moss green in the bathroom are testament to that. “I love using strong colours to make an impact,” explains Katy. These strong tonal contrasts mix with exquisite traditional pieces and reassuring natural materials to create a sense of calm and elegance. For example, butterfly and bird prints mix with woody tones and earthy greens and browns to create a cool, calm space in the lounge. Katy demonstrates a gentle awareness of the building’s architecture; preserving, restoring and updating in harmony with it. She explains; “I like to work with and enhance the character and original style of the house. For example we’ve kept the original sash windows and floorboards, and put back fireplaces and cornicing.” One of the most important design elements for the couple was designing the house around the way they live. “One estate agent recommended that we put one large master bedroom in the loft, rather than a double and a single bedroom. But we knew that we wouldn’t feel happy sleeping on a separate floor to our young baby, so it was more important to create the master bedroom on the same floor as Arlo’s room,” explains Katy. “It also means that when family come to stay they have their own area on the top floor.”

MASTER BEDROOM

“I love that this room feels dramatic with its high ceilings and strong wall colour, and calm at the same time,” Katy explains. The three matching scatter cushions draw the eye to the bed, inviting you to relax. The original floorboards are stained dark and varnished, and the original cornicing and ceiling are painted white. The white bedspread belonged to James’ grandparents

MAIN BATHROOM

The walls are painted in a calming green that helps to create a sense of peacefulness. White metro tiles and dark grey grout line the walls. The chair belonged to James’ great uncle. Katy says of the cast iron roll-top bath “we had to strengthen the floors to take its weight!”

To prevent the loft from only being used as a guest area and a floor of the house that is rarely used, James and Katy built in tons of storage and put their study up there. “It’s now a really useful space. In fact we’re up there most days,” Katy explains. The study is a peaceful space at the top of the house with a desk next to the sash window, overlooking the gardens behind. “It’s perfect for home-working or just escaping from the chaos downstairs.” The kitchen design is another example of the way the house meets the needs of its young family. “Having a kid changes things. We have friends over for dinner all the time, because otherwise we’d never see them! So we wanted to create a large kitchen-diner where I can cook and talk to our guests at the same time.” Katy incorporated a contemporary design and colour scheme which are offset by the warm tones of the antique wooden table and old church chairs. The open plan room and large windows to the garden mean that when James and Katy are cooking, they can keep an eye on Arlo while he plays. Katy designed a seating area near the large windows so tired parents can relax on the sofa while the children sprint in and out of the garden. Looking back over the whole project, it’s remarkable how much the Stevenson Bretton’s have achieved. Now a family of three in a house that has been fully renovated and re-designed, the result is refined and romantic, rich in colour and texture, boasting original features and bearing almost no resemblance to the house they bought originally. l

GUEST SHOWER ROOM

“Everyone always loves the wallpaper in here,” enthuses Katy. “We are really pleased we went with it.” White metro tiles with sand coloured grout line the walls

The National Theatre Live broadcast, on Thursday 1 November, is Allelujah! Alan Bennett’s hilarious new play is just what the doctor ordered, don’t miss this rousing chorus line for the NHS. Our first film in November is Beast (15), on Thursday 15 November. Here is a terrific film, an increasingly intense psychological thriller which deftly overturns expectations. We have a second National Theatre Live broadcast, on Tuesday 20 November, The Madness of George III, another play by Britain’s best-loved playwrights Alan Bennett. On Friday 23 November we have the charming New York romantic comedy, The Boy Downstairs (12A), on. A charming and droll New York romantic comedy. Finally, on Sunday 25 November, to commemorate the centenary of the end of WWI, we have Journey’s End (PG). This is an excellent new film version of RC Sherriff’s classic play, brought to the screen with thrilling power and passion, thanks to director Saul Dibb's hard-hitting urgency and the superb acting from a talented

Cuckfield Museum

Cuckfield Museum’s new display ‘Peace at Last 1918: Joy and Sorrow’ looks at the new world facing people at the end of World War I and features Alphaeus Arnold, grandfather of Cuckfield resident, Janice Peek. Blinded in France in 1915, he was one of the first men to be admitted to St Dunstans, the charity set up in 1915 to treat men wounded visually. Alphaeus had been a carpenter but retrained as a mat and basket maker during the six months he spent at St Dunstan’s. He was given a braille watch which we display – it has no glass so may be read by touch - and was helped to find a wife. He married Eva in April 1916, the month he left St Dunstan’s. They lived in Wimbledon, close to Eva’s parents, and had four children. Alphaeus made baskets and mats in a workshop at the bottom of the garden and every week made the

journey to St Dunstans in Regents Park to sell them, his younger son accompanying him to show him the way. St Dunstans supported the family after Alphaeus’ death in 1932, offering holidays at their centre in Ovingdean. See www.cuckfieldmuseum. org

Balcombe Remembers WWI Centenary Poppies

A West Sussex village is commemorating the centenary of WWI with a handmade ceramic poppy for each villager who served in the war. Balcombe Parish Council commissioned local artists, Luna van Mierlo and Julie Rezac to make the poppies and visitors at the Village Fete helped paint on the ceramic glaze this summer. The poppies were installed on the bank in front of St. Mary’s Church on 15 September and will remain until after Remembrance Sunday. “We wanted to do something really special for the 100 year anniversary of the war. This is a wonderful tribute and shows the contribution made by even a small village like Balcombe.

Hassocks Garden of Remembrance

Tilling Comes to Wivelsfield Theatre

In this the year of the 100th Anniversary of Armistice Day a group of volunteers has started to tidy and refresh The Garden of Remembrance in Adastra Park, Hassocks. Second Lieutenant Ewart Stafford was killed in the First World War whilst flying with the Royal Flying Corps. He was just 19 years old. Ewart was injured in the Battle of Arras and died subsequently on 22nd of April 1917. After the War, Mr and Mrs Stafford spared no expense with their plans to commemorate their son Ewart. The Garden of Remembrance, part of Adastra Park, in Hassocks was given by them to commemorate Ewart and other comrades from the village. At its opening in 1924 it was said to be one of the finest memorials in the country. Sadly, over the years the elaborate bird bath and

Down on the coast of Sussex, nestled on the edge of Romney Marsh, lies the quaint old village of Tilling. To an outsider, driving through it’s quiet streets in the late 1920s, it would seem a quiet unassuming place, where people live happily side by side in perfect harmony. The very epitome of England and all things English. However, looks can be deceptive. In reality it is nothing less than a hive of gossip, back stabbing and tittle tattle run by a woman of formidable energy and deviousness, determined to ruthlessly stop at nothing to ensure that Tilling remains her private domain. But all that is about to change. A glamourous challenger is about to enter her realm. An interloper who rules her own domain of Risholme in the Cotswolds with equal determination and now seeks new

lands to conquer. Wivelsfield Little Theatre very much look forward to welcoming you to Tilling and the world of E F Benson when we present Make Way for Lucia at Wivelsfield Village Hall from November 15th to 17th, Doors open at 7pm, curtain up at 7.30pm. There’s a Book in Everyone. But…

“Robin, you cannot write,” a writer friend of mine told me when I was making the change from writing TV and film scripts to novels, “Even if you were a plumber, you wouldn’t install central heating in your own house unless you’d learnt how to do it.” And he was right. So, I spent a year learning how to write prose by attending courses and reading books on novel writing. Many bookshops have whole sections called, ‘Writing’. People are always telling me that they have a great idea for a book or TV show. Great, I say, go and write it! “But I thought you could write it for me and you know all the right people.” Well, actually folks, I don’t. There’s a book in everyone, the saying goes, and I believe that’s true. But it’s being able to write it that matters. It won’t take as long as you think to learn either, and you’ll make the wonderful discovery on the way that you’ve fallen in love with the process of learning the craft as well as creating a book that people will love to read! Robin Driscoll will be doing book signings for his latest book, The Unborn, at Hassocks Garden Centre Dec. 7th, 8th and 9th from 10:00pm until 3:30pm.

LOCAL WALK

FOREST ROW WALK To mark Remembrance Sunday we sent Robert Veitch to trek the footpaths of Forest Row and find the little known plaque to fighter pilot John Crossman

L

eaving the car park on Lower Road wearing seasonal footwear, turn left and wander along Station Road. Once over the River Medway, keep going until the very end of the road veering left into a car park. Turn right, across the Forest Way, taking the footpath opposite and to the right of the pumping station. Once through the glade the path enters a field of free-range pigs (don’t worry they’re fenced in). Follow the left side of the field to the gates at the end. Take the small gate on the left by the sign for the Vanguard Way. The path feels like a droveway, although the scenery appears at times to be from Tolkien’s Middle Earth. Two railway sleepers form a small footbridge 50m before metal 7-bar gates appear to the left and the right. Look over the gate on the right, down in to the bottom of the valley. It’s not visible from the gate, but there’s a memorial in the valley to Australian born John Crossman who was killed on the 30th September 1940 during the Battle of Britain. Crossman’s RAF Hurricane had been engaged in a dogfight with a Messerschmitt 109. He was 22.

56 SUSSEX LIVING | November 2018

The path feels like a droveway, although the scenery appears at times to be from Tolkien’s Middle Earth Back on the path, steering clear of tree roots, ruts and squirrels, keep going until the holly bushes indicate the summit. Things level off and the path smoothes out all the way to the telegraph pole at the junction. Turn left onto Cansiron Lane and follow the loosely surfaced track, which evolves into tarmac after 100m. After 1/3rd of a mile, there are ‘Private Road’ signs on the right. Opposite them, by a pair of brick gateposts, the fingerpost indicates the route south, between the houses. An iron fence borders the path and although narrow at first, it widens as it drops downhill, eventually opening

to a glorious view of Ashdown Forest. Once over the stile, walk between the fences, past the fifteen oaks (you might count them differently!) to another stile. A third stile precedes power lines overhead. Hug the left side of the field towards the water trough and another stile. Head steeply downhill, albeit briefly, before turning left at the end of the fence. Follow the path to the drive, through the yard, all the way to the A22. Turn left and amble 100m to the traffic lights, which offer the safest crossing of the road. Then it’s up the ramp to the Forest Way, the old railway line. It’s easy to imagine the days of steam and the 5:15pm from Three Bridges to Royal Tunbridge Wells braking for Forest Row station. A gap in the vegetation opens up at Guy William Davidson’s bench, which is a pleasant place to pause and contemplate. At Brambletye Crossing, turn left onto the immaculate surface of Brambletye Lane, sauntering downhill for ¼ mile to the ruins of the 17th century Brambletye House. There is no public access so soak it up from afar. 100m further on, turn left as the road bears right. Walk alongside the fence, before the path chicanes left and right. Once over the River Medway turn left, passing through the kissing gate. Follow the path, running parallel to the river until a stile appears. Stride across the field, towards the partially timber framed house and two stiles in unison. Atop the greenway turn sharp left. Then it’s over the stile and right, over the stile, across the track and

over a third stile. Follow the left side of the field under the telephone lines to the final stile of the day. On the other side take the left hand fork, between decaying undergrowth, then over the stream to the pebble path, meandering through S-bends back to civilisation. Walk through the rear of Kennard Court, up two sets of steps into the centre of Forest Row. Turn right and cross the main road safely. To the left of the mini roundabout is Freshfield Hall and on its’ perimeter wall is a plaque dedicated to John Crossman. From here, walk down Hartfield Road, full circle back to the car park. l

Robert has tested the route personally, making sure it is suitable for walking. REMEMBRANCE

HERO OF THE

GREAT WAR Ruth Lawrence tells the powerful story of a Haywards Heath war hero, Sergeant Arthur George Knight VC, who fought for our Canadian brothers

I

recently spoke to Martin Barker, the great nephew of Sergeant Arthur George Knight VC, who was born in Haywards Heath in 1886 and was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross for an act of exemplary conduct during the First World War. A Victoria Cross Commemorative Stone is placed in the town in his honour. Martin and his two brothers were occasionally treated to viewings of the VC by their grandmother, Arthur’s sister Nellie, who had inherited his award and she would proudly show it to groups of schoolchildren and their teachers from the local primary school. As a young man Arthur was apprenticed as a carpenter but his dislike of the undertaking duties that went with the job prompted him to emigrate to Canada in 1911 with his friends. He left from Southampton on the SS Albania and made his way from Quebec to Regina, Saskatchewan, where he continued his trade as a carpenter. He enlisted in the 46th Infantry Battalion in 1914 and was sent to France in 1915 in the 10th Infantry Battalion. Serving for three years as part of the 1st Canadian Division, Arthur received the Croix de Guerre from the Belgian government. On September 2nd 1918 as Acting Sergeant, Arthur faced the enemy

58 SUSSEX LIVING | November 2018

during the Second Battle of Arras, leading a bombing section forward under very heavy fire. He dashed forward alone, bayoneting several enemy machine gunners and trench mortar crews before directing fire on the retreating enemy with a Lewis gun. Soon after, he ran on alone, killing one Officer and two N.C.O.s and capturing 20 other ranks. He then routed another enemy party single handed and survived the day. During operations the next day with his Company, Arthur

Mid Sussex District Council honoured him by naming a residential street Knight Close

and several comrades were injured or killed by an enemy shell. He was struck in the head by shell shrapnel at about 3pm and died shortly after. Arthur and six other Canadian soldiers were each awarded the VC for their bravery, gallantry, initiative and devotion to duty in that battle, on 2nd September, 1918. Villagers did and still do regard Arthur and his comrades as liberators, many of whom made the ultimate sacrifice. Martin researched Arthur’s history in 1987 and realised that no one in the family had seen where he was buried so he and his brother Peter went to the Dominion Cemetery, Hendecourt–Les– Cagnicourt to visit his grave. Martin got in touch with the Calgary Highlanders and as a result, in one of the proudest moments of his life, a memorial plaque was unveiled on the village church at Villers-les-Cagnicourt in 2015. Two streets in Regina, Saskatchewan are named after Arthur and in 2013 Mid Sussex District Council decided to honour him by naming a residential street Knight Close. In 2014 Haywards Heath Town Council placed a marble memorial plaque to him under the portico of the Town Hall entrance in Boltro Road. It is a fitting tribute to a son of Haywards Heath who paid with his life for the continuing freedom of others. l

Other popular activities at QLeisure are the archery/axe throwing/assault rifle combinations which costs a very reasonable £54 for the 90 minute experience plus half hour briefing. BEAUTY & FASHION

POP IT! D

o you pop it, turn it, flip it or keep it flat? No, I’m not talking about the latest dance mooves the kids are whipping out these days, I’m talking about the humble collar. And do you know what? I just can’t decide what I like! On the one hand there is the cool factor. I’m thinking Danny Zuko cool – a greased back bouffant and bad boy pout, penchant for jumping on cars and getting the girl. Rock chicks have been smouldering under a turned leather for years and let’s not forget the glamour puss factor a big collar provides; framing the face, lifting the hair, providing a nifty little something to gaze seductively over as you turn your head to your admirer. We all want to be that girl, don’t we? Then on the other hand there is the preppy, slightly douchebag look championed by so many frat boys and college girls with popped up polo shirts. An oversized, overstarched collar like a wind-blown sail flapping around

62 SUSSEX LIVING | November 2018

Let’s not forget the glamour puss factor a big collar provides your face can look a little bit 80s power dressing, a little bit try hard or a little bit clownish (see Harry Hill’s ‘comedy’ look) and unless it’s a dress-up party,

Turned up, turned down, Sara Whatley examines the highs and lows of the collar this month may not be the look one is desiring. And then of course there is the practical element to an up turned collar. It’s now properly autumn out there, the wind is merrily whipping along and downpours abound just waiting to catch you out and drizzle down your neck – but not if you’ve gone for a pop! A turned collar provides a cosy barrier against the elements, an inbuilt draft excluder, and an extra layer of scarf warmth (scarf inside or outside the collar, a whole different question). Like striding fourth in wellies, an up turned collar against the wind is an emboldening move, and there is something eminently satisfying about flipping your collar to the elements – take that, autumn! But for me the jury’s still out I’m afraid. Sometimes I love the look, sometimes it just makes me laugh. Maybe I’ll stick to the safe ground of a half popped collar this season – an upturned middle-back and down at the front. Whatever turn you choose, wear it with pride! l

BODY BUZZ

IT’S CHILD’S PLAY! Reconnect with your inner child and have a go at playing! Sasha Kanal explains how to have fun with your exercises

W

1

Keep It Up! Hula hooping is a great way to dissolve those calories. In fact a study by the American Council on Exercise revealed that it can burn about 210 calories in a 30 minute workout depending on your age and weight. Plus it comes behind only bootcamp and kick boxing for best calorie burning rate amongst other

popular exercises. Rocking your hips to keep the hoop in place activates all the muscles of your core and helps to get rid of belly fat and slim your waist. The larger the hoop, the easier the workout and some hoops are weighted to work you even harder. Before you start, keep the hoop level by holding it on both sides, then rest it against your back and start to spin! Get one spin in and then start circling your hips to start hula hooping.

Rocking your hips to keep the hoop in place activates all the muscles of your core and helps to get rid of belly fat

2

Feeling Ropey Transport yourself back to the playground and start skipping! It’s the ultimate high intensity workout as it burns so many calories – apparently 10 minutes of skipping is the equivalent to running a mile in eight minutes. Skipping is less harsh on your joints compared to running. It can help your coordination and balance and is a weight-bearing exercise because you pound the ground, so can help stave off osteoporosis. Skipping is also a full body workout as you use your legs to jump, and your shoulders and arms for turning the rope and your abdominals for stabilising the body.

3

Animal Magic Movements that mimic animals can be amazing for strength and conditioning and improving your coordination and mobility. Start with a crab crawl – an intense upper body movement that uses your own body weight for resistance. Start by sitting on the floor with your feet in front of you, hip distance apart. Put your arms behind your back with your fingers facing your hips. Lift your hips off the floor and tighten your abs. Start moving forward by moving your left hand followed by your right foot and so on, moving back and forth. l

CAUTION: If you have any long-standing health concerns, always consult your GP if you’re starting a new exercise.

hen was the last time you had fun in your workout? Here at Body Buzz we’re certainly not ones to negate any form of exercise or activity. An endorphin high no matter what activity or sport you’ve done to achieve it, is always good in our books. But can you recall the last time you experienced a real sense of fun and play from any exercise? Perhaps as a rule we adults should reframe our view of exercise as a chore, a ‘work’-out or something we need to tick off our to do list at the end of the day. Or maybe this approach works for you and it’s the prescriptive approach that helps you get it done. Either way, activities that mimic or recapture childhood games are a ‘thing’ currently in the fitness world. So dust off your skipping rope, get those hula hoops out and prepare to giggle – A LOT!

HEALTH

The trauma of brain injury can be deeply affecting to all those involved. Dr Rees helps us understand this condition and after care

BRAIN INJURY H

ead injury and by implication, traumatic brain injury is a common cause of admission to A&E centres around the country. Fortunately, only a small number are serious and require detailed medical attention. Although the brain is surrounded and protected by a very strong bony cage, the skull can be fractured in a head injury. The fracture can be a simple ‘crack’ or complicated when bits of broken bone penetrate the brain and cause serious damage. Skull fracture can be associated with bleeding both inside the brain and on the surface of the brain which can be trivial or life threatening. What is less obvious is that the brain is a semi solid, so that when the skull hits or is hit by something hard, or is subject to rapid deceleration, the brain as it were ‘sloshes around’ inside the rigid skull. This may cause bleeding and may also be associated with rotational forces that can twist the upper part of the brain on its ‘stalk’ and cause tearing of many nerve fibres which are essential parts of the brain’s communication network. There is an international system of assessing the degree of brain damage known as the Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS),which ranges from 0 to 15, 15 being normal. Ambulance personnel, A&E doctors and neurosurgeons around the world use this scale when a head injury has occurred to assess the patient. At a much later stage, the

66 SUSSEX LIVING | November 2018

degree of memory loss after the event, called the ‘post traumatic amnesia’ period, is a helpful guide to the degree of brain injury sustained. Once the patient has been stabilised, they are rapidly transferred to hospital (by helicopter if necessary), where a full assessment of the brain and any other injuries can be made. Detailed clinical examination including GCS, will help to indicate the degree and site of brain damage and this will be complimented with an urgent CT scan, looking for intracranial bleeding, the possibility of pressure on the brain, lacerations of the brain itself and

Brain injury may require immediate surgery and this may be lifesaving

blood clots within the brain. All of these possibilities will be assessed in conjunction with, as is often the case, major trauma to other parts of the body. Neurosurgery is an important part of any major trauma centre. Brain injury may require immediate surgery and this may be lifesaving. Patients can be deeply unconscious and require help breathing in spite of a fairly normal looking CT scan because the injury has caused microscopic damage and swelling of the brain. Managing the increased pressure on the brain can be a major part of treatment. Sedation is often part of the intensive care that these patients need. For a minority of patients, the degree of brain damage proves fatal. For others, when they recover consciousness, regular detailed assessment of neurological and intellectual function will be necessary, accompanied by physio and occupation therapists trained in head injury management. Many patients will need a formal assessment of IQ which may display significant problems which may affect work and social life even when they have made an excellent physical recovery. This aspect of post head injury management requires stressing so that all patients are properly assessed after the event and do not slip through the net. Headway is a national charity that has been critical in brain injury management, the Brain and Spine Foundation can also help. l

dining AT THE

CAT

With its mouth-watering menu and homely atmosphere, the Cat Inn strikes that perfect balance between gourmet haven and cosy country pub, Hanna Prince relished every minute when she recently visited them

I

t’s a mid-week lunchtime at the Cat Inn in idyllic West Hoathly, and the pub’s stylish restaurant is bustling with contented diners. Delicious smells waft from plates piled high with golden puff pastry pies, buttered vegetables and perfectly cooked chips. In the snug 16th century bar area, walkers with their dogs in tow linger over pints of real ale and locals warm themselves around an inglenook fireplace. Even before we’ve sampled the food, it’s easy to see why this multiaward-winning inn has built up such a stellar reputation both locally and further afield.

“We serve good, flavoursome food of a very high standard, but this isn’t a restaurant – we’re still a traditional country pub,” explains owner Andrew Russell. Browsing the menu, I can see what he means. It’s the ideal mix of traditional comfort food (think Harveys beer-battered fish and chips, prime aged beef burger and scrumptious sounding pies) and more adventurous fare. I order the Heritage Beetroot Salad to start, which blends goats’

curd, apple and hazelnut in a deliciously delicate, meltin-the-mouth combination. Guy, my husband, opts for the Squid Salad with chorizo, apple and sweet chilli from the inventive and well-stocked special menu. He’s blown away by the zesty flavours and the perfectly cooked seafood. For our mains, we decide to sample both a traditional Cat Inn speciality and a creative combo from the pub’s talented Head Chef Alex Jacquemin. Guy goes for the Steak, Mushroom and Ale pie, which comes with a decorative plait of mashed potato. I have Wild Skate Wing, bought in fresh that day. Its subtle flavour is wonderfully set off by a lemony caper sauce and crushed Ratte potatoes. The quality and freshness of the ingredients shines through in every dish we have. My beetroot was picked freshly that morning at nearby Courtlands Nursery, the pastry in Guy’s pie was made in-house and the meat is delivered daily by a local butcher. Even the clotted cream ice cream that accompanies my Spiced Ginger Cake dessert is made in the pub kitchens – and it shows. “This is the best pudding I’ve ever eaten,” I tell Andrew gratefully, as Guy tucks into an almost equally delicious Spiced Victoria Plum and Apple Nut Crumble. It comes as no surprise to learn that the Cat’s spot-on combination of delectable food and olde-worlde country pub charm has wowed reviewers. It’s the only pub in West

It’s easy to see why this multiaward-winning inn has built up such a stellar reputation Sussex to have been awarded a Michelin Bib Gourmand for goodquality, good-value cooking. In a large bowl, use a 3 hand-held electric whisk to beat together the butter and sugar until pale and fluffy. Gradually beat in the beaten egg, a little at a time. If the mixture begins to curdle, add a spoonful of flour with the last few additions of egg.

Remove the cake from 5 the tin and store in its lining paper, wrapped tightly in foil. Keep in a cool place. Feed the cake every few weeks by making small holes in its top, then drizzling with a couple of tablespoons of Drambuie. This will help to keep the cake moist and add extra flavour. If the cake has domed in the centre neatly slice off the top before covering with marzipan. To ensure a completely flat surface turn the cake upside down before decorating.

Add the soaked fruit To marzipan the cake: in 4 and walnuts, with any 6 a small saucepan, warm remaining liquid, mix well. the jam with 1 tablespoon of Fold in the rest of the flour. Spoon into the cake tin, level the top of the mixture. Stand the tin on a tray and bake for 3-4 hours until cooked, covering the top of the cake with foil if it starts to over-brown. When a skewer comes out clean, the cake is cooked. Leave to cool completely in the tin.

cold water then sieve to get rid of any lumps. Place the cake on a board and brush with the warm jam. On a surface dusted with icing sugar, roll out the marzipan to a 35cm square. Lift over the cake and ease to fit smoothly around the sides. Trim off any excess. (If you don’t want to ice it straight

away, cover with Clingfilm and store in a cool place for up to a week.) To ice the cake: first, 7 lightly brush the marzipan with water. On

a surface dusted with icing sugar, roll out the regal icing to a 35cm square. Lift over the cake and ease to fit smoothly around the sides. Trim off any excess. Dust your palms with icing sugar and gently ‘polish’ the surface of the icing with the heel of your hand to smooth out any creases. Wrap any leftover icing in Clingfilm to decorate the top of the cake.

Decorate how you wish. 8 Once decorated, cover the cake loosely and store in a cool, dry place for up to 2 weeks before Christmas. If you wanted to make as presents just increase the volume, put the extra into smaller cake tins and decorate with fruits and nuts. l

hink of a light, bright, positive place. A special place full of caring and compassionate people, a healing place to come and receive treatment and a safe and supportive place to come and rest in peace. This is St Peter & St James Hospice. Set in the beautiful Sussex countryside and surrounded by gardens, forests, walks and donkeys, St Peter & St James is a place many hold dear in their hearts. Inside their welcoming walls countless people have received the greatest of care in all sorts of capacities; from counselling services, pain and symptom control, a Day Centre offering homemade lunch and tea, companionship, massage and entertainment such as musical recitals and craft activities, to the more longterm respite and end of life care.

St Peter & St James is a place many hold dear in their hearts The main hospice rooms are all en suite and have a pull-down bed for relatives to stay, making for a homely and relaxed atmosphere where patients feel safe and happy. Along with the six community nurses and two physiotherapists who all do home visits, there are numerous and invaluable

volunteers working at the hospice doing everything from tea and coffee to gardening, maintenance and making sure the bird tables are well stocked. The cost of running such a place is understandably vast, costing £7,200 a day, and the majority of this comes from individuals and families in the community, local businesses and Trusts and fundraising support groups. One such fundraiser is Liz Linn. Many of you will remember Liz’s husband, Roger Linn, who wrote for Sussex Living for many years. His hilarious column ‘View from the Downs’ was eagerly anticipated each month and he was a dear friend to the team here. Like so many before and after him, Roger

and his family received exceptional care from St Peter & St James, and now Liz is putting her all into fundraising for the hospice, and remembering Roger. “I have very enthusiastic friends helping me to put on this event, to name but a few Penney, Paula and Carol,” Liz tells me. “And we are hoping to beat our total last year, which was over £1,300.” If you cannot attend but wish to make a donation please email Liz. This year the event will be on Thursday 6th December at Liz’s home in Hurstpierpoint. Doors open from 11am and homemade cake and coffee will be on offer until 2pm. Then from 6-9pm there will be prosecco and nibbles. During the day they will be holding a tombola with some fantastic prizes all donated by local businesses, such as meals, hair and beauty treatments, family farm visits, children’s adventure camp prizes, animal goodies, clothes, wine, deli treats and alternative health treatments. If anyone wants to donate prizes please get in touch. There will also be a pop-up fashion shop, second hand books and endless friendly company. Liz and her team welcome their suggested donation of £5 on the door and are very much looking forward to a full house again this year, so do join them in support of this wonderful hospice. l St Peter & St James Fundraising Event Thursday 6th December 11am-2pm, 6-9pm Mandarin House, 33 High Street, Hurstpierpoint elizabeth.linn3@gmail.com

Toy Appeal More Radio’s popular Toy Appeal is set to return this Christmas. The long standing annual appeal continues to bring smiles to the faces of children and teenagers across Sussex who may otherwise have a Christmas to forget. Programme Controller Pete McIntosh told us how you can make a difference

I

t is estimated that more than a quarter of children in Sussex are living in poverty – as a result many of them won’t be expecting a visit this year from Father Christmas. Each year, More Radio encourages listeners to donate new toys suitable for deserving young children who may otherwise go without. This year, the Sussex-based radio station have teamed up with both Tesco and Sainsbury’s, as well as dozens of other local businesses to provide collection points across the county where listeners can get involved and support the popular initiative. More Radio’s Breakfast Presenter Nick Osborne said, “We have seen the Appeal grow every year. We are consistently overwhelmed by the generosity of Sussex residents who get behind the campaign year after year and allow us to support so many worthwhile charities and organisations over the festive period. We really are grateful

for all the donations we receive, and would like to thank everybody who has previously supported the Appeal. We know from the feedback we receive from the groups we support just how much of a difference the Toy Appeal can make.” “Every toy we collect gets distributed to disadvantaged children across our local area,” said Pete.

“These are children who might not otherwise receive a present at Christmas. They may be spending the festive season in hospital, suffer from a physical or learning disability, or just be from a disadvantaged background where their parents or guardians simply can’t afford to provide gifts and presents. Last year we were able to support more than 20 charities and voluntary organisations and we are always looking to help more. If you’re involved in a charity or group working with children, we really want to hear from you. You can contact us via our website, moreradio.online to register your interest.” Last year the station collected 3,000 new toys and games and will be looking to grow this number further when the campaign begins in November. Pete continued, “This year we really want to up the focus on teenagers. We have always been inundated with toys suitable for younger children and we are blown away by people’s generosity. It would be brilliant if we could expand the appeal to support disadvantaged older children. I know they can be difficult to buy for but books, age appropriate games, and even gift cards are always popular.” To find a list of local drop off points, just head to the station website moreradio.online. l November 2018 | SUSSEX LIVING 83

CHRISTMAS

Christmas in

HAYWARDS HEATH! We all know Haywards Heath townsfolk are very special people and, at Christmas, our community truly comes together to bring happiness, joy and laughter to everyone with our Christmas Festival Weekend. Nicola Bird and Ruth de Mierre give us details of the festive programme

T

he Christmas Festival Weekend is on Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th November in the centre of town. Hosted and sponsored by The Orchards, the fun begins at 11.00am on Saturday, with entertainment for all on the stage; school choirs, concert bands, Spanish dancing, marching bands, amazing dance troupes and stiltwalking jazz musicians.

In the afternoon we’ll be welcoming Father Christmas with his elves and real reindeer In the afternoon we’ll be welcoming Father Christmas with his elves and real reindeer and, with Mickey and Minnie Mouse, Donald and Daisy Duck, there’ll be a grand parade through the Town, before Santa switches on the lights at 5.00pm to herald the beginning of a wonderful Christmas! There’ll also be fireworks in Victoria Park at 5.30pm, courtesy of Haywards Heath Town Council, to round off a perfect day.

We all know Christmas isn’t just one day, so Santa will be back on Sunday 25th November and the entertainment and merriment will go on and on! The amazing Oathall Jazz Band will begin the fun at 11.30am, followed by the Mid Sussex Band, a local drama group and musicians from Ensemble Reza Community Orchestra. Santa will return on the three following Saturdays, the 1st, 8th and 15th December, when he’ll be joined by carol singers and, on Saturday 8th, an animal school where you can meet, cuddle, learn about and feed new friends. We’re also welcoming the Ditchling Morris Men on Saturday 22nd December to really get you in the festive mood before Christmas Day. Nicola Bird, Orchards Manager, says, “Christmas is a time for family and friendship, as well as for giving and receiving gifts. We’re very lucky, here, to have so many friends who give their talents to bring joy and happiness to so many of our community.” PRIMARY SCHOOL CHRISTMAS CARD COMPETITION Meanwhile, all the local primary school children have been creating wonderful designs for our Town’s Christmas Card Competition, the best of which will be displayed in The Orchards from the last week in October and judged at an award ceremony set for Monday 19th November. There’ll be prizes for the winners and the overall winner will be the official 2019 Christmas card for The Orchards. Children from St Joseph’s Catholic

Primary School, St Wilfrid’s Catholic Primary School, Warden Park Primary Academy, Harlands Primary School, Northland’s Wood Primary Academy and Bolnore Village Primary School are all hard at work designing their perfect Christmas ‘Greetings’ within three age categories. The Town Mayor Cllr Jim Knight and Katie Heath will be in the Orchards in the week beginning 12th November to judge the entries and, more importantly, will hand out awards and prizes on the 19th November at 12.30pm. Orchards Manager, Nicola Bird, says, “We’ve so much talent here in our Town, I’ve been amazed at the high standard of creativity and so proud to have the winning entry as our annual Christmas card.” l

PETS

It’s a Dog’s Life Happy Birthday to Rolo the Border Terrier! He is turning 16, or about 80 in dog years, a ripe old age indeed

N

ovember hosts a number of significant events, not least of which is my birthday! I shall be sixteen this time, which makes me a very senior dog, so like many of advancing years I’d like to pass on some advice. Firstly, I’d like to point out that old age isn’t an illness, it’s a life stage, so anybody who treats me like some doddery old boy who doesn’t know his snout from his waggy end, is in for a bit of a shock. I might have silver fur, but underneath, I’m the same old rascal I’ve always been and I like to flatter myself that I never knowingly pass over an opportunity for bad behaviour. At least these days I can’t hear ‘Them Indoors’ telling me off and the rude names that they tend to attach to me, which are often in recent years, prefaced with the word ‘old’. ‘Senior’ is much more gentil and distinguished.

outrider when I’m out in my buggy and I despatch him to exercise ‘Her Indoors’ when the weather is too inclement for a dog of my age. She needs the exercise, what can I tell you. He also hears things that I can’t and starts barking, so that I can join in and save ‘Them Indoors’ from the evils of the delivery people, the refuse collection, or any

unattributed little noise that attracts our attention. The other night, when we were out for our late-night garden visit, I found an intruder of a feline disposition. I sounded the alarm, which I’m sure our neighbours appreciated, and then got Teddy to escort the little blighter off our property. He’s got younger legs and a sturdier presence. And finally, exploit your age shamelessly. Cuteness might belong to puppies, but I can deploy a pair of appealing eyes and a fine set of eyebrows as well as the best of them. You may have heard the expression ‘silver fox’ but why should foxes have all the fun? After all, life is for enjoying whatever your age. l

I never knowingly pass over an opportunity for bad behaviour Secondly, they say that to grow old is to witness the reduction of limitless possibilities, or to put it another way, you start to run out of ‘firsts’, but don’t let this cramp your style. However many things you’ve done with your life there are always new things to bark at, new edibles or not quite edibles to eat, and fresh adventures to have. I’ve done lots of things since I reached double figures: winning rosettes at dog shows, making guest appearances on the radio, doing book signings, riding in a backpack and a buggy, there is a long and increasing list. Thirdly, get staff! I have ‘Her Indoors’ waiting on me hand and foot, worrying over any little ailments, and making sure I’m getting my fair share of treats and life’s comforts. Then I’ve got my apprentice Teddy. It’s surprisingly useful to have a younger set of paws to deploy tactically. He’s my November 2018 | SUSSEX LIVING 87

PUZZLE PAGE SUDOKU

A simple process of logic is all that it takes to solve each puzzle in this game. Put the numbers 1 to 9 in each vertical column and each horizontal line. Each number must appear only once in each column and line and in each of the 3x3 boxes in the grid.

Each number in the grid represents a different letter of the alphabet. You have three letters in the control grid to start you off. Enter them in the appropriate squares in the main grid, then use your knowledge of words to work out which letters should go in the missing squares. As you get the letters, fill in other squares with the same number in the main grid and control grid. Check off the alphabetical list of letters as you identify them.

Kakuro puzzles resemble crosswords which use numbers instead of words. The aim of the game is to fill all the blank squares in the grid with only the numbers 1-9 so that the numbers you enter add up to the corresponding clues. When the grid is filled, the puzzle is complete.

Free Flu Vaccinations A more effective vaccine for the over 65s is being offered this winter in a bid to keep the viral infection at bay. As older people can have weakened immune systems, they are at higher risk of suffering serious symptoms of the flu that can be life threatening. The new vaccine could see 30,000 fewer people require an appointment with their GP, as well as 2,000 fewer admissions to hospital. Ultimately this is expected to save more than 700 lives this winter. As well as those over the age of 65, the flu vaccine is also available free to those in groups at particular risk of infection and complications, including: children aged 2 to 3, and those in the school vaccination programme, pregnant women, adults and children with underlying health conditions (especially heart and respiratory disease) and carers. Vaccination is the most effective protection we have against the virus and the best way to protect yourself.

If you are eligible for your free flu jab, please contact your local GP surgery or participating pharmacy to get more information and book yourself an appointment. For more information visit: www.westsussexwellbeing.org.uk/fight-flu For more information on the symptoms of flu visit www.nhs.uk/conditions/flu

Are you entitled to a FREE flu jab? Make sure you get your flu jab The flu virus strikes in winter and it can be far more serious than you think. For some people flu can lead to serious complications such as bronchitis and pneumonia, and can lead to hospitalisation.

That’s why the flu jab is free if you’re aged 65 or over, have a long-term health condition or are pregnant.

COMMUNITY

Santa Claus

IS COMING TO TOWN Christmas has gone high-tech! The Burgess Hill Roundtable has a new tracker to show you where and when Santa will be visiting to raise funds for the local community. Chairman (and Chief Elf) Jensen Bourke explained how you could get involved

T

he holidays are coming! And this means that Santa returns to our local streets for his annual tour to spread his Christmas cheer and to meet and greet all of our local families. Santa is looking forward to seeing you all again this year (perhaps sharing the odd glass of sherry!) and he will be touring on his sleigh complete with his dazzling lights, his reindeer, Christmas music and his snow machine. So how do we know where Santa will be this year? Well he is proud to introduce his new Santa tracker, which will let you know exactly where he will be on each day. Santa’s tracker will show you a real-time map and it will pin point his exact location minute by minute, what it will not show you is his hideout in the North Pole which will have to remain a secret to us all according to Santa! Visit burgesshill. roundtablesanta.co.uk to sign up to the tracker. In addition, his elves will be publishing the routes on the following facebook page: Burgess Hill Haywards Heath and District Round Table. Santa admits that he needs to rely on his younger elves to help him use social media to let families know exactly where he will be and at what time. Santa said, “Woodworking skills, milk and cookies are more my thing so I left all this new digital stuff which

I know nothing about to my younger elves who seem to spend most of their time on their phones rather than perfecting their wood working skills!” Santa did go on to say that he is always on the lookout for support, so this is your chance to get involved with your family and help Santa out on his routes by collecting monies together with our local Roundtable families. These monies will be used for local charities and good causes and being a part of

Santa is proud to introduce his new Santa tracker, which will let you know exactly where he will be on each day the Christmas collections is a great deal of fun and chance for you to do something a little bit different whilst helping our community. Roundtable families have been helping Santa out for the best part of 30 years and one of its many core values is to support our community. Being a part of Roundtable allows its members and their families to make some real changes for the better for our local people and it is also an

excellent chance to meet new people in a warm, friendly, social and supportive environment. Many of its members benefit from making new friends, learning new skills, doing something a little bit different to what they are used to and having the knowledge that they have made a real difference to the lives of others. So, Santa’s call to action is to please help him this year by getting in touch with his chief elf Jensen on 07823 401912 or at jb@bennettoakley. co.uk. See how you and your family can get involved and why not take the opportunity to find out more about the benefits of being part of Roundtable, Jensen is looking forward to hearing from you. l

BOOK REVIEW

Elizabeth Kay offers Sussex Living readers her thoughts on recent reads that have caught her attention. She gives her views on a selection of books from different genres which may capture your interest WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE

do that sort of thing fifty years ago without someone reporting you to the social workers.) Max sails away in his imagination to the land where the Wild Things are, and he prances around being as wild as he likes and becomes their king. But you can get too much of wildness, and in the end he decides to go back home to his own bedroom. This book is a classic, and timeless. The pictures are unique, beautiful and evocative, yet they have that touch of anarchy which all children crave in small doses. It’s the kind of book you treasure until it either falls apart, or you pack it safely away for your grandchildren.

Maurice Sendak

This book first came out more than fifty years ago, and the illustrations were a major talking point because they were stylish and modern without being whimsical. The text is simple yet sophisticated, and gets to the heart of what all youngsters feel – wouldn’t life be great if nobody had the right to tell me what to do? Max has been told off by his mother for behaving like a wild animal when he puts on his wolf suit, so he’s sent to bed without any supper. (You could

EMERGENCY ADMISSIONS

by Kit Wharton I had assumed this book was written to cash in on This is Going to Hurt by Adam Kay (Picador), but actually it was published first. It doesn’t have the style or expertise of the other book – although the author did spend ten years as a reporter – but it is an honest account of a job that has become slightly glamorised through TV programmes such as Casualty. It’s an easy read, and although some of it is very funny other parts are

moving and sad. There are graphic accounts of some truly awful cases, interspersed with time-wasters who are sometimes amusing and sometimes utterly infuriating. Kit Wharton is a not a paramedic, he’s an ambulance driver, and this is the diary he wrote from 2003. There are also autobiographical memoirs of a rather dysfunctional but entertaining childhood which can be very amusing, as can some of the callouts. The hoaxes, resulting in highspeed journeys that can be dangerous in themselves, only to discover that the caller is ‘the local nutter. The police recognise the number.’ The overwhelming feeling, though, like so many roles in the NHS, is of a job that is utterly exhausting but very rewarding.

IF ONLY THEY DIDN’T SPEAK ENGLISH: NOTES FROM TRUMP’S AMERICA by Jon Sopel

Jon Sopel is a familiar face and has been the BBC’s North America Editor since 2014. He covered the 2016 presidential election at first hand, and will be remembered for Trump’s reaction to him at his first news conference: “Which news organisation are you from?” “BBC News.” “Here’s another beauty,” says Trump, having lashed out at the media for half an hour. “That’s a good line,” responds Sopel gamely. “We are free, impartial and fair.” “Yeah. Sure.” “Mr President…” “Just like CNN, right?” says Trump sarcastically. Sopel’s book isn’t just about his run-ins with Trump, though. He digs much deeper than that, and attempts to show – rather well, I fancy –

Sopel attempts to show the fundamental differences in attitude between the USA and the UK the fundamental differences in attitude between the USA and the UK. The USA is all for personal responsibility, and good neighbourliness to get through the hard times. The UK believes the state should step in when people can’t cope. I had never really understood this, but it’s a profound dissimilarity with farreaching implications. It puts the result of the election into context, and makes understanding what has happened across the pond a little bit easier, if not any more digestible.

The

Spoctagon Space Company We can create an annex in the safety of your family garden Would you like to live near your family but still stay independent in a purpose built one bedroom annex of your own? Call 0800 270 7077 or 07412 378 245 or email jk34343@hotmail.com to receive a brochure and read Winifred’s story. Winifred sold her bungalow in the Midlands and purchased a purpose built annex to place in her son’s garden in the South East. This meant that she kept most of the sale price of her bungalow just in case she eventually had to move into a care home but invested it to provide an income. In the meantime, even if her family had to move the annex was transportable to the new location. Winifred had it all: Why don’t you follow suit?
