lthough Anna Barry travels the world as music producer to some of the most talented artists alive, she is a Sussex girl at heart. I met her at the house her family have lived in since 1932 to find out her experiences during her rewarding and hugely successful career in music. The large welcoming house in Keymer is now home to Anna’s mother and once belonged to her grandparents who sold it to her parents after the family 8 SUSSEX LIVING | October 2019

moved from Hurstpierpoint when Anna was 14. “We were free range children,” she remembers, learning piano at the age of five and progressing to the Royal College of Music Junior Department when she was just 12. She had lessons with

Andrew Lloyd Webber’s mother, learned violin and studied composition. When home Anna sang in Keymer Church choir and she has fond memories of a marvellous music teacher from primary school called Bertha Martin. “She made sure every child could read music and play instruments,” Anna recalled. “My love of music was supported from an early age.” Once Anna reached 18 she headed for Switzerland to study music for three years then achieved a first-class degree at the Royal College of Music, graduating in piano

and composition. From there, Anna went to work in the TV industry supplying cultural programming. It was while Anna was working at EMI in 1984 in the marketing department that she applied for a job as a music producer. Thinking she was in with a good shot, Anna was shocked to learn from the head producer during a drink after work that although she’d been right for the job, she hadn’t been given it because she was a woman. It was a blow she hadn’t expected but she was determined not to let it hold her back. Soon afterwards Anna met Andrew Lloyd Webber during a promotional trip to Stockholm and the pair got on as though they’d known each other for years. During their long conversation she told him she wanted to produce and the next day a driver appeared to take her to Andrew’s house in Sydmonton. Over dinner, he told her that if she could help him form a business plan for a classical label, he would pay for her to produce it. Ecstatic, Anna grabbed the opportunity by the horns, booking the famous Abbey Road studios to make 12 recordings and make her the only woman in the classical recording field at the time. She felt so much gratitude for being given the first step on the ladder as in the 1980s her calling was a very tough job. After this she was headhunted by Philips Classics in Holland and spent two and a half weeks every month travelling on early and late flights which ruled out a social life. She remained close

to her family, school friends and neighbours everywhere and has no regrets about the demands of the job as she “loved every minute of it”. In 1989 Anna met Dmitri Hvorostovsky who had just won the Cardiff Singer of the World competition against Bryn Terfel in the ‘Battle Of The Baritones’, and she also went to Russia to meet Valery Gergiev, head of the Kirov Opera, which is now known as the Mariinsky Theatre. Anna began recording in the Mariinsky Theatre, which turned out to

be immensely challenging as there wasn’t enough power to do multi track recordings and they were only able to record in stereo. “We had to ask them to turn off the ice cream fridges because of the noise and stop the snow ploughs outside for the same reason,” she remembered. Anna’s eyes were opened to the responsibilities of a producer, as everyone looked to her to solve their problems; “The buck stopped with me!” she said. Anna learned to speak basic Russian during her time

in Russia; and recalls some of the difficulties she faced during her time there; “it was 1990 and there was only one fax machine in Moscow, at the Savoy. They charged $50 per page and they were the first place to have a direct dial phone booth that took Amex cards.” The conditions just before the collapse of the Soviet Union were so bad that people in the opera company had no medicines and little food; it was hard to imagine for people back home but this was the reality they were living in. Anna was the first Western person allowed to visit Dmitri’s home city of Krasnoyarsk which was right in the geographical centre of Russia and although there are now flights there and it’s completely changed, at that time it was a closed city.

Although Anna wasn’t a vocal specialist, she learned on the job and found she had a natural knack for editing voices and an open mind for post-production. She worked with famous blind tenor Andrea Bocelli and two of the best mezzo-sopranos in the world, Latvian Elina Garanca and Cecilia Bartoli. Two of the recordings she made with Elina were in Valencia and Gran Canaria, which meant Anna could indulge in her favourite sport, scuba diving, while her balance engineer enjoyed his passion for flying! Anna is a Master Scuba Diver after taking it up two decades ago; her favourite

dives are in Bonaire, in the Dutch Antilles near Venezuela. “It’s my favourite place on the planet,” she admitted, “you can walk into the water and see extraordinary things.” It’s the perfect counterbalance, along with spending time with her partner Ingrid Sutej and their seven dogs, to the intensity of her cultural work and she revels in the contrast. She told me that one of her most amazing experiences was diving through a ring of 15 reef sharks on the Great Barrier Reef at night with a guide. Although Dmitri Hvorostovsky tragically died of a brain tumour just two years ago, Anna is very close to his widow and five children and she still works with Elina and an amazing young

cordon with the entire recording on a memory stick! Luckily, Meghan and Harry’s wedding was more relaxed and Anna and her team were all well practiced. All Heathrow flights were diverted during the ceremony at Windsor Castle to avoid unwanted noise, although since the first royal wedding Anna recorded there is now de-noising audio and

many wonderful advances in technology. Both albums were available to listen to mere hours after the event. It is clear that Anna has loved her career from the very beginning. It was enormously inspiring to meet such a dynamic and talented woman who has spent her life ensuring that people are empowered, heard and appreciated. l

Italian pianist called Alessio Bax. She also records the choir of the Sistine Chapel and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, telling me that, “I’m a lucky person and have never regarded my job as work. I’m very happy quietly empowering people from the background”. Anna was delighted to be asked to record two recent Royal Weddings, HRH Prince William and Catherine Middleton in 2011 and HRH Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in 2018. An interesting

challenge at Westminster Abbey became apparent when an early security sweep at 6.30am before the wedding of Kate and William meant the area was cordoned off. Anna dashed across town after spending the night volunteering for the Samaritans and making sandwiches for the recording team. Once everything was recorded, Dickon Stainer, the head of the recording group, was deemed the fastest runner, so he ran over to a courier bike at the edge of the security

The members of Haywards Heath Movie Makers are celebrating 70 years of award winning movie making by inviting you to a very special Public Film Show, ‘Showcase 70’, which will take place in the Wesley Hall at 7.30pm on Tuesday 22nd October. The club was formed in 1949 as the Haywards Heath and District Amateur Cine Society so 2019 marks our 70th anniversary. The first public show given by the club was on Tuesday 13th December 1949 in the Public Hall, Haywards Heath, and we’ve been able to trace a copy of one of the films presented at that very first show. The film, Devon Holiday 1949, was made by founder members Mr and Mrs Church, and is a charming holiday film of the period. We’ll be presenting this and other rarely seen and fascinating films made over the past 70 years. 14 SUSSEX LIVING | October 2019

They’ll be an opportunity to see Haywards Heath railway station, and shots of the town in 1952, in an extract from the club’s first film, TV Thief. We’ll also see shots of Harry Secombe’s visit to the town in 1959. From 1962 we’ll see shops and businesses in South Road, The Broadway and Sussex Road, many of which have long since gone. We’ll also take you on a journey following the River Ouse from source to sea, along the South Downs Way through Sussex, and for a trip on the Historic Commercial Society’s run from London to Brighton. With a further mixture of drama and comedy this will be an evening not to be missed. Admission is £5.00 at the door to include programme, tea or coffee and biscuits. RADIO AWARDS

The Great Sussex Baker COMPETITION

The Great British Bake Off has become something of a national institution over recent years, with the likes of Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood becoming household names. Who’d have thought a TV show featuring amateur cooks knocking up a Victoria Sponge or a loaf of corn bread would become one of the most watched and most talkedabout shows around? It also seems to have inspired us to become a nation of bakers ourselves, with social media awash with photos as we show off our own impressive looking ‘bakes’. At More Radio we’re looking to give one such amateur baker the chance to win a fantastic prize.

Just upload a photo of your best bake to the More Radio Facebook page and you could be a winner. The person crowned 'The Great Sussex Baker' will win a stunning, bespoke three-tiered cake courtesy of Sussex based company ‘Beanies Bakes’ plus a pair of tickets to ‘The Big London Bake’ where you will get a chance to show off your baking skills and experience first-hand the pressure that comes with baking in that tent! The prize is valid for one of their weeknight sessions in either September, October or November (subject to availability). Just search for ‘More Sussex’ on Facebook and get posting!

The trip of a

lifetime

Sussex Living writer Lisa de Silva and her husband celebrated their 25th Wedding Anniversary this year, and she tells us all about their amazing adventure

H

aving married on Christmas Eve our anniversary celebrations are usually absorbed into the season’s general festivities. Yet having chalked up 25 years of married life, this year we decided to break with tradition, forgo any silverware and celebrate with a road trip across Southwest America. Enticed by big skies, epic scenery and the romance of the open road, we spent the winter months planning our anniversary adventure and finessing our itinerary to include all five of Utah’s magnificent national parks. March seemed like the best time to travel as it was good value for money, less likely to be crowded and hopefully not too cold and we flew out to Las Vegas mid-month. Thanks to jetlag we were up early for the drive north to Zion National Park. Winter was receding and the canyon was in the grip of spring, with snow melt powering the mighty

pinnacles and red rock hoodoos, carved by millions of years of weather erosion. Gazing down into the 70 million-year-old Canyon still covered in snow, the otherworldliness of the jagged peaks made it feel like we were on another planet. From here we picked up Highway 12 designated an ‘AllAmerican Road,’ taking us to Capital Reef National Park. This is one of Utah’s great drives, over panoramic mountain passes, through deep green aspen forests and along the famous Hell’s Backbone, a ridge road with sheer drops on either side – every twist and turn of the road rewarding us with jaw-dropping views. The highlight of Capital Reef is the Waterpocket Fold, a ‘wrinkle’ on the surface of the planet that creates natural water pockets. The hiking here is pretty accessible and we saw the historic remains of Fruita, a town established by Mormon pioneers in the 1880s. We spent that night in a cowboy cabin which was great but did not expect to wake up to six inches of snow! Back home it would have caused weeks of disruption, but the local farmers and US snow-patrols had the roads cleared in no time at all and we were soon on our way to Moab.

waterfalls and sunlight glinting off of sandstone skyscrapers. Our main ambition was to hike the Narrows. One of the world’s most incredible slot canyon trails, the path is basically the Virgin River and the canyon so narrow that you are often wading waist deep through the water. Despite hiring ‘waterproof’ gear, we got soaked. All that snow melt meant the river was running high and fast but it was a fantastic experience and a great way to begin our trip. Next stop was Bryce Canyon to see the maze of rock spires, twisting A small and friendly town with a new age vibe, Moab was our next base. From here both Arches and Canyonlands National Parks are easily accessible. The sight of Mesa Arch at sunrise and the sheer magnitude of the canyons made Canyonlands our favourite Utah park.

our visit to the Grand Canyon – so vast, beautiful and majestic there was an almost spiritual element to it. As always, we visited early in the day feeling like pioneers with the whole world to ourselves. Our final drive was along the ‘Mother Road,’ Route 66 to Las Vegas. After all that natural beauty Vegas was a shock to the system and it took a while to adjust to all the people, lights

As huge fans of cowboy westerns, a trip to Monument Valley was always going to be a highlight. Here we stayed in a traditional tipi in the Navajo Tribal Park, overlooking the ethereal beauty of the deep red buttes, mesas and spires. I’d been nervous about staying in the tipi but it was a wonderful experience of star-filled skies and howling coyotes, despite the arctic temperatures. Another incredible experience was a visit to the geological wonderland of Antelope Canyon, near Page in Arizona. A stunning slot canyon and sacred Navajo site, erosion has sculpted the multi-coloured sandstone rock into mesmerising shapes which twist and turn like a corkscrew. Surely nature could not better this? But she did on

and noise. Both keen poker players, we met up with some of our poker group to play in a tournament, which my husband won and while it wasn’t enough to pay for the trip, we all ate well that night. This was the trip of a lifetime and a wonderful way to celebrate 25 years of marriage. l

Your wedding, your way

A wedding venue with a difference awaits you at Great Betley Farmhouse, as Sara Whatley discovered when she visited this pastoral slice of heaven

J

ust outside the delightful rural village of Henfield, down a winding track through sheep-dotted fields and trees sits Great Betley Farmhouse. It is a traditional white painted, picket-fenced farmhouse from the 16th century, nestled into a truly bucolic setting, and as owner Kim Stewart realised, the perfect place for a wedding venue.

Photography by Bond

Kim welcomes me into her family farmhouse where the atmosphere is warm and relaxed. “I love it here, this is my little slice of paradise and I never want to leave it,” she tells me, “but I love sharing it!” Kim is passionate about providing superb service and making her guests feel comfortable, and she knows the wedding industry very well too having run her own wedding stationery company for many years before this venture. Book your wedding at Great Betley Farmhouse and the option for a totally unique, totally bespoke wedding is yours to take. The farmhouse, five-tosix acres of picturesque land with ample space for marquees, tipis, camping or glamping, parking, stunning photo opportunities and a lawn by the lake for a champagne canapé reception is all on offer to use. And for those that don’t fancy a night under canvas after the party has finished, you can retreat to the farmhouse where you have exclusive use of the beautiful en suite master bedroom and three other pretty and very comfortable double bedrooms, all

with lovely views. Thoughtful touches make this place special, like the high bar in the wardrobe ready to hang wedding attire on, and the vintage mannequin waiting to be adorned with a wedding dress. The rooms come on a B&B basis, and as Kim already regularly receives 5 star ratings for her B&B, you know you are in safe hands. Kim will be on hand for the duration of your 48-hour booking, from when you turn up at 12 noon the day before the wedding to when you leave at 12 noon the day after. She will be your on day co-ordination and has an extensive list of tried and trusted suppliers she would be happy to recommend. “This is the ideal venue for those that love the laid back, rustic, bohemian type of wedding,” Kim tells me. I can absolutely see her vision: a marquee draped in fairy lights, straw bales around fire pits, areas for BBQ’s, fields surrounded by wildlife and

Book your wedding at Great Betley Farmhouse and the option for a totally unique, totally bespoke wedding is yours to take beauty including sweeping views across to Chanctonbury Ring and the South Downs and loads of space to chat round a campfire when the music stops – like your own personal festival. “You will not get a cookie cutter wedding here,” Kim says. “The space is yours to do what you want with. It’s a blank canvas to let your imagination run free. I just want people to have the best wedding day possible.” l Great Betley Farmhouse Stonepit Lane, Henfield, West Sussex, BN5 9QT

WEDDINGS

The tradition of giving keepsakes to guests is on the rise. Hanna Prince reveals everything you need to know about wedding favours

A Simple favour L

ike bridal white, garter tossing and bouquet carrying, wedding favours are a tradition that dates back for hundreds of years. One of the first to chronicle the giving of mementos to guests was the French writer M. Misson. In his Travels Over England printed in 1696, he says: “Formerly in France, they gave Livrees de Noces, which was a knot of ribands, to be worn by the guests upon their arms; but that is practiced now only among peasants. In England it is done still amongst the great noblemen. These ribands they call ‘favours’ and give them not only to those that are at the wedding, but to five hundred people besides.” In France and Italy, the practice of handing out

schedule. If you can’t face the extra stress then don’t panic – there’s no pressure.

‘ribands’ to guests evolved into the giving of edible ‘bomboniere’. Sugar cubes – expensive, and therefore a subtle sign of wealth – were often presented in jeweled boxes. As the price of sugar dropped, couples turned to other sweet treats to express their appreciation. Sugared almonds were a common wedding favour in the 18th century and remain popular today. TO DO OR NOT TO DO? When it comes to planning a wedding, many couples like to feel that they’re following the same age-old customs as their parents and grandparents before them. Wedding favours are as much a part of the traditional British wedding as the aisle entrance and the white dress.

Even if you’re not a traditionalist, favours are a nice touch. They can be a way to express your creativity, thank guests for attending and gift them a memento of the day to take home. Of course, not everybody wants to give themselves yet another addition to the packed pre-wedding

HOMEMADE HANDOUTS From chocolate truffles to homegrown flowers, handmade wedding favours are one way to wow your guests. Sweet treats such as sugared almonds are a nod to tradition as well as being easy to make at home. Other twists on the foodie theme include small bottles of sloe gin, fudge and macaroons. If you really want to push the boat out (and time isn’t an issue in the days before the wedding), why not bake some gingerbread men and decorate them to resemble your guests? Nature-themed favours are another top option. Divide bulk-bought wildflower or tree seeds into individual bags, or re-pot small succulents into glass jars for your guests to take home. Fancy getting crafty? Try your hand at customised coasters, stamped salt dough hearts, cork key rings or paper roses. Handmade soaps and candles are harder

to pull off, but the results are guaranteed to impress. SOMETHING NEW Buying in your wedding favours doesn’t have to be costly - and it’s certainly less time-consuming than the DIY route. There’s plenty of choice out there, with edible (and drinkable) favours topping the popularity stakes. Think personalised chocolate hearts, artisan popcorn, rock sticks, lollypops, pink gin and bottled water inscribed with the couple’s names. If your budget is bigger, opt for keepsake favours. Creative options include pin badges, charms, Christmas tree baubles, candle holders and personalised shot glasses.

Favours needn’t be something your guests can take home with them. How about a ‘wedding survival bag’ complete with confetti, sweet treats, lip balm and even paracetamol for the day after. Alternatively, a packet of sparklers will help create plenty of after-dark photo opportunities. CHANGE A LIFE As an alternative to wedding favours, some couples are opting for charitable donations. Charities (including Macmillan, the NSPCC, RSPCA, Dogs Trust, Mind, the Alzheimer’s Society and Bluebell Wood) have caught onto the trend and many offer pin badges or personalised cards to give to your guests. Maybe you like the idea of transforming the life of somebody close to you instead? Lottery tickets make fun and low-cost wedding favours. Perhaps somebody else might see their dreams come true on your wedding day. l

TREES and TRAINS

The busy commuter town of Hassocks grew from the train station to what we see today; thriving businesses, a generous community spirit and all surrounded by beautiful countryside and woodland. Ruth Lawrence tells the story

I

t could be said that trains created Hassocks. Before the railway came, the area consisted of woods and common land and a sandy lane that linked Hurstpierpoint with Keymer. Sheep were the likely reason why a station was built here; geographically this was a perfect spot to transport the numerous Southdown sheep that grazed the hills in this area. Cattle were catered for too as sidings for cattle trucks existed at the northern end of the station and an adjacent market yard held sales on alternate Thursdays. In 1881 the station was extended southwards and a new station master’s

house, offices and waiting rooms were built on the site of the former level crossing. The station master was also the village’s first post master and parcels could be posted and stamps purchased from a small wooden kiosk on the platform. Renowned architect David Mocatta designed the original building which remained as a cottage and the goods yard contained a coal wharf, a turntable and extensive sidings to cater for freight trains heading to the Sussex coast. The new premises had a

Unfortunately, these fine buildings later fell into disrepair and the authorities demolished them, much to the disappointment of local residents. Before the First World War there were trains that delivered milk and

S at mornings and evenings the station approach was full of horse drawn carts loaded with milk churns. Cattle pens lay behind the fence between the Hassocks Hotel and the station and livestock was driven there from afar, children earning some money from driving them back to the farms after school. Children attending school in Burgess Hill could reach the station by horse-bus; one lady remembered the driver handing her the reins as a treat as the horses cantered up the slope to the station, pulling up sharply at the

front as she hauled them to a stop. Not far from the station, nestled between the railway line and a residential street lies a small gem of a woodland, owned by the Woodland Trust. Called Butchers Wood, it was originally part of the large Danny Estate which planted oaks as a crop. The estate was sold off in lots in the early 1980s and in 1989 the Trust purchased the tangled woodland which was in urgent need of management. Although open to the public, the wood is a highly sensitive environmental area and needs walkers to respect it by keeping strictly to the paths. Delicate wood anemones and bluebells carpet the woodland floor in their season and no bikes are permitted in the wood because of the mud that gathers on the paths after rain. I spoke to warden Linda Fitter, who told me that workers from the Butchers Wood Volunteers are carrying out coppicing, a traditional technique that stretches back 2,000 years, where hazel sticks are cut low to the ground as they emerge from the trunk. Hazel grows quickly, up to six feet a year and is used to make peasticks and hurdles and it is still utilised in the ancient building method of wattle and daub. Planned management over the years has allowed sunlight to reach to the woodland floor which encourages

Hazel grows quickly, and is used to make peasticks, hurdles and wattle and daub plants to flourish in previously overgrown areas. Plants attract insects, and insects bring in more birds, an entire ecosystem developed from sympathetic stewardship. Coppicing takes place from early November to the end of February, the time when leaves have dropped but before birds begin nesting. Marchants are proud to be celebrating over 80 years of estate agency in Hassocks. Having opened our Hassocks office in 1938, Marchants has witnessed large changes in both the local community, technology, and of course the property market itself. With the development and popularity of social media and online property services in the last 20 years rising, it has brought arguably the biggest social change seen in the last century. The way people now browse, research and shop is dramatically different to when the office first opened in 1938, no more so with property. When Right Move was launched in the year 2000, it took the industry by storm. It, along with now more recent sites such as OnTheMarket.com have opened the doors to a massive change in the way people search for property and have access to information at the palm of their hands. So you may think, what role does an estate agent play that the internet and/or online agent cannot provide? At Marchants, we are real people. We want you to be happy and

relaxed knowing you are in trusted hands. We pride ourselves not only with years of experience in the property market but also as being a part of the much-valued local community both professionally and personally with expertise that reflect this. Whether you are an applicant, landlord or property/land owner looking to sell or let, we aim to listen to your needs and can offer honest, productive and professional advice either on the phone, with a home visit or in the office 6 days a week. We are competitively priced and provide an unrivalled successful service. Since our recent Hassocks office refurbishment and rebranding, we have expanded our department of technology so that as well as being active online and on social media platforms such as Facebook and Instagram, we are now also the only local agent to house a large exterior touchscreen at our Hassocks branch. This is available for you to view our portfolio of properties and further arrange appointments and viewings any hour of the day, 7 days a week at your convenience.

country and most of the ash trees will eventually be lost. Nature, however, will always fill a gap left by the decline of a species and Linda told me how hornbeam has begun to self seed in the woodland after thirty years of coppicing has opened the floor to sunlight. Hornbeam is a beautiful tree and could become an important species of the future; its native habitat is in the southeast, but it has been successfully planted as far as Scotland. It has an exceptionally hard wood and was used for butchers’ blocks and skittles as well as cogs in wind and water mills where

long durability was required and it was also coppiced for charcoal burning in the past. Its name originates from the hardness which was more comparable to horn than wood and in parts of East Anglia, the name hardbeam still persists. Ditchling Morris cut sticks from ash and hazel in this wood, trimming them into 3ft lengths after being left to season for six months. The group travel as far as Brittany with Morris sticks grown in this small corner of Sussex. Butchers Wood is a prime example of how well-planned management can benefit a small woodland in a semi rural setting. As building encroaches on precious land that was once the preserve of birds and mammals, such remaining pockets of wildlife are crucial. At 17 acres, Butchers Wood is a breeding ground for new life, providing food, shelter and space for numerous species to develop and spread to surrounding land and gardens. If you are waiting for a train at Hassocks station and watch birds perch near the track, there’s a good chance they may have hatched in Butchers Wood and grown to maturity on insects that fed on the flowers there. Thanks to the tireless work of volunteers, the descendents of those birds will remain singing over Hassocks when the next generation of commuters is boarding the train. l

Lost and Found IN HASSOCKS When Ray and Valerie Carpenter visited the Sussex Living office with a montage of monochrome photos of Hassocks Station from the 1950s, they recalled some fascinating memories to Ruth Lawrence, which brought the fine quality images to life

alerie’s uncle, Alfred John Archer was the station master at Hassocks during those years. His father, Alfred Archer had been the station master at Haywards Heath station. Valerie remembers how her uncle would wear a black suit with a flat topped cap with braid; the station master had an important job and always looked the part. Eventually, he left the role, left Hassocks, and emigrated to Australia. While he was working in Hassocks a clerk called Arthur Jenner took many

photos on his Novoflex single lens reflex camera which was unusual in having a self-timer button. One photo shows Arthur, diligently working in the booking office sometime between 1950 and 1954. Arthur made an album of his photos and captioned many of them to add interest. At some long forgotten point in time he gave them to Valerie’s uncle and they ended up on the other side of the world with

When uncle Alfred passed away Valerie’s cousin visited the UK and told her she had found the photos in the attic him. When uncle Alfred passed away Valerie’s cousin visited the UK and told her she had found the photos in the attic. Eventually they came back to Hassocks, to the stewardship of Valerie and Ray. Arthur had known Fred Baker, a carter for Hurstpierpoint College who was featured in one of the pictures

with the cart pulled by a horse called ‘Laddie.’ The covered wagon was for transporting the pupils’ luggage when they had emerged from the train. Another photo shows the old signal box designed by Thomas Myres. There’s also a picture of an early Scammell Scarab next to Laddie the horse - the mechanical future arriving to replace the horse drawn past. The hands-on nature of railway work can be seen in an image of a man switching the points in a signal box and a photo of the goods shed shows items stacked high in large wooden crates waiting to be loaded onto the train. Workers can be seen unloading coal for the SE Gas Board and in a photo of the platform, the shop selling newspapers to commuters is stacked full of reading material to while away the journey. Thanks to Arthur Jenner’s long hours in the darkroom developing these wonderful pictures, Valerie and Ray retain a treasure trove depicting the elegance of times past and a poignant reminder of her uncle’s involvement with Hassocks Station all those years ago. l

CHRISTMAS COUNTDOWN

Shhh…let’s whisper it for now but there is no denying Christmas is coming and it’s time to get organised! Sara Whatley tells you how

A

jolly good Christmas consists of a few key things: lots of good food and drink, a beautifully bedecked home, giving and receiving thoughtful gifts and most importantly, sharing the festive cheer with your loved ones. Get planning your Christmas now and when the time comes you can relax and enjoy it, rather than rushing around for last minute presents and decorations. The Christmas dinner is a main focal point for many, and while plenty of happy home cooks love nothing more than donning the chef’s hat and getting stuck in, there are just as many who would rather have a professional do it for them. Thankfully there is no shortage of fabulous eateries in

Sussex catering for pretty much any taste and food preference for the big day itself or for festive meals and parties beforehand. If you are planning a meal out it’s wise to book a table early to avoid tears on Christmas Day! Getting a few presents sorted early is not only an load off your mind, but also helps spread the load financially. Use our gift guides in November and December to help you find some brilliant gifts for your loved ones. Many garden centres and shops already have their Christmas decorations out, so get in early and nab the pick of the bunch before everyone else! Now all you have to do is gather your loved ones around and enjoy. l

Dining delight at

THE CAT INN After a decade in charge at the Cat Inn, owner Andrew Russell chats to Lisa de Silva over a delicious and memorable lunch, reflecting on the past, present and future at his historic pub

O

ne of the finest destination pubs in Sussex, the 16th century Cat Inn is full of welcoming historic charm. Proud to be celebrating ten years at the helm, owner Andrew Russell has built a loyal team who take pride in delivering exceptional service along with high quality food and drink in a relaxed and friendly setting. After a decade in charge, Andrew believes customer service is the driving force behind the Cat’s continued success. “Above all else we value our customers. We get to know them and remember their food and drink preferences which they really appreciate,” he tells me. During the last ten years, Andrew has seen a rise in demand for local products, as well as vegan and gluten free menu options. Given this, the Cat

Head chef, Alex Jacquemin and his team have enjoyed the challenge of creating flavoursome vegan and gluten free dishes and the beautifully presented harissa and tofu stuffed tempura courgette flower, served with spiced Freekeh, Romesco sauce and a watercress salad was a vegan delight offering a delicious combination of flavour, texture and colour. Deceptively simple, char-grilled chicken Caesar salad can be hard to get right, but the Cat served up perfection on a plate, with crispy bacon, light but crunchy croutons, soft egg, salty anchovies and beautifully tender chicken strips. To round off we sampled the glorious chocolate and hazelnut sour dough bread and butter pudding bathed in a silky marmalade crème anglaise, alongside a creamy lemon posset served with poached strawberries, strawberry sorbet and a nut crumb, full of rich fruit flavour and a welcome crunch. Andrew is hugely proud of his team some of whom have been with him from the beginning. “I believe that happy staff create a great atmosphere resulting in happy customers and there’s nothing as satisfying as those customers coming back. It makes it all worthwhile.” A fabulous meal, excellent service and a warm ambience make our return guaranteed. l The Cat Inn North Lane, West Hoathly, West Sussex, RH19 4PP 01342 810369 thecatinn@googlemail.com www.catinn.co.uk

I believe that happy staff create a great atmosphere sources its food and drink from local suppliers wherever possible, including wines from the Bluebell and Kingscote Vineyards, ales from Sussex and Kent breweries, apple juice from the Priest’s House in the village, along with fresh seasonal produce from Courtlands Nursery, Trenchmore and Grange Farms. Famed for its culinary prowess, the Cat offers classic mainstays like fish and chips, pies and burgers complemented with a changing seasonal menu and daily specials. On a recent visit we started with a velvety mushroom soup, served with crispy potato, a swirl of vibrant green tarragon oil and sour dough bread, which was full of autumnal comfort. In contrast, the salt and pepper squid in crispy batter served with crayfish, avocado, apple and radish salad spoke of summer, with a sweet chilli dressing packing a playful punch of flavour. An ever-popular choice for Shearer’s customers, especially at Christmas time, are the food and drink gift hampers, which are boxed, packed and wrapped for free, and for which customers can choose their own contents. The future for Nick is all about delivering more of what his customers want, which means talking to more customers, searching for new products and further reducing his environmental impact by building on recent changes including a ‘bring your own container’ scheme for both loose olives and loose frozen products and introducing compostable cheese paper and frozen product bags.

Tomato & Apple Chutney Over the next few months Bryony Hill, cook, author, keen gardener and wife of the late footballing legend Jimmy Hill, will be sharing some of her very own recipes and photographs with us. Bryony can usually be found at home in Sussex either stirring something on the range or out tending her two acres of garden and vegetable beds, at all times clad in an apron and wellington boots! Enjoy this seasonal tomato and apple chutney using local produce if you can, or even better, home grown. Made now, it can be kept for festive cold buffets and sandwiches.

INGREDIENTS 1kg tomatoes (skinned – see below) 300g sugar (I used light brown muscovado sugar) 100g raisins or sultanas 250g apples (I used cookers) peeled and roughly chopped 200g onions, finely sliced 225ml cider vinegar 40 SUSSEX LIVING | October 2019

and place in a heatproof bowl. Cover with boiling water and leave 3-4 minutes. Drain and rinse under the cold tap before peeling off the skin. Chop roughly and place in a large saucepan or preserving pan. ½ tsp allspice ½ tsp ground ginger pinch / ¼ tsp dried chilli flakes METHOD Using a knife, make a cut in the skin of each tomato

1

Add all the other 2 ingredients and place on the hob. Bring to the boil

stirring all the time until the sugar has dissolved. Place 5-6 clean jars in a low oven for 10 minutes in order to sterilise them. Allow the chutney

mixture to bubble away, stirring regularly to prevent it sticking and burning, and cook until it is thick and you can almost divide it with a wooden spoon. Allow to cool for a 3 minute or two before carefully pouring the

chutney into a heatproof jug and fill the hot jars through a jam funnel if you have one, to prevent spillage. Seal, label and store in a cool place for at least a month before eating. l

PETS

It’s a Dog’s Life Teddy the Border Terrier is champing at the bit to get in his new wheels on an upcoming biking holiday. Hold on tight Teddy, says Helen Stockton, aka ‘Her Indoors’

W

hen it comes to getting around, us dogs are truly blessed. We already have four-wheel drive as standard, and can easily out-pace and out-last our biped family members when on a long walk. Some of us might be a little unreliable in bad weather but we are quite environmentally friendly, with the exception of occasional, accidental emissions and assuming biodegradable poo bags are appropriately deployed, so we have the advantage in a number of departments. However, sometimes for reasons of convenience, speed or distance, we have to use alternative forms of transport. Although I haven’t been living with ‘Them Indoors’ for that long, I’ve already been in a lift and on a train, and I know my predecessor, the Boss, had been on buses and even on a rather dubiously named form of transport, a catamaran. There are occasions however, when transport for people has to be adapted before us dogs can safely use it.

We already have four-wheel drive as standard, and can easily out-pace and out-last our biped family members Take cars for example. It used to be that us dogs could roam around the interior, unsecured, until it came to the attention of people who consider such things, that having a dog following their own inclination, might be a driverly distraction as well as dangerous, to both the dog and other occupants, in the event of an accident. So now it is recommended all dogs traveling in a car should be appropriately restrained. For some, this means travelling in a crate in the boot, but, as ‘Her Indoors’ has a Mini convertible, if she does this to me, I’m calling Dog-Line. My preferred option is a specially designed car seat, like a box, suspended just 42 SUSSEX LIVING | October 2019

above the seat from the headrest, fastened in with a seat belt. If it’s just me and ‘Her Indoors’, my car seat is in the front, which means I can rest my chin on the rim of my box, and gaze adoringly at her, from close range, something she finds a bit unnerving. She worries that when the roof is down, I might get something in my eyes, as she has sunglasses to prevent this for herself. Somebody on Twitter,

showed a dog wearing Doggles, a cross between sun glasses and goggles as the name suggests. She bought me a pair – social media has much to answer for – but, if I say so myself, I do look quite cool wearing them, so I’m hoping to attract attention from eligible lady dogs. And I’ve recently experienced a different mode of transport. ‘Them Indoors’ have bought new bikes which they intend to take with them when motorhoming. The topic of how best to accommodate me was discussed, and ‘Her Indoors’ suggestion that I go in the basket on the front, was fortunately vetoed by ‘Him Indoors’, which is just as well, I’m no-one’s handbag pooch! Instead, a trailer has been purchased in a fetching shade of red and I’m looking forward to my bike rides, although I’ve some doubts about ‘Her Indoors’ cycling abilities. I’m wondering if I need a crash hat… l

and occupational therapists amongst others, means carers really have their finger on the pulse when it comes to a client’s requirements and everything is linked up. We have a really good reputation with authorities because of this relationship and approach.” It’s no surprise that for a service based on human contact and professional home care, it’s the quality of staff, their training and wellbeing that is key. “We are always on the lookout for great staff,” says SarahLouise. “Ours is a wonderful company to work for because we really look after our people and this is evidenced by many of our carers celebrating over 9 years of service, which is very rare in our sector. Caremark offers guaranteed contracts to care staff if they want them. This is unusual in an industry in which carers are often only paid for ‘contact’ time with a client. It’s giving staff peace of mind if they need it. Yet the flexibility is there too if a carer wants a zero hours agreement, to fit in with their life.” So what core qualities are needed to be a great carer? SarahLouise smiles, “Positive attitude, compassion and kindness, with a desire to make a difference to people’s lives”. Car drivers are a must as we

provide care for people in their own homes We ask for no qualifications, other than a bundle of common sense. It’s being able to gauge if someone is unwell due to a change in their medication.” Natalie adds, “We have staff ranging from ages 18 to 67 in our company. Many have had their own experiences of caring for someone and realised it’s something they want to pursue as a career. There have been great advances in equipment for clients, and technical help with hoists, so there’s no heavy lifting.”

Support arrangements are tailored to every person’s specific needs

Training is extensive and inclusive as well as hands-on. “We have our own in-house training scheme and offer the new Care Certificate. We use a blended learning scheme that is more visual than written. Trainees are also mentored and attend shifts with experienced carers so they really get to see how it’s done. All this is monitored by our Field Care Supervisors and Managers to ensure best practice and to support each carer individually.” It’s plain to see that both SarahLouise and Natalie truly love what they do. “The best thing about my job is connecting with the local community,” says Natalie. “To attend events such as Haywards Heath Town Day or functions for Parkinson’s Disease and meet people from the locale and make a difference – it’s what we’re all about.” Sarah-Louise started her career at Caremark as a community carer and worked her way up to Registered Manager and Director. “There are so many opportunities for career development here at Caremark. Our ongoing training and opportunities allows for continual improvement that gives us our reputation.” This continual striving for progression and improvement is reflected in their care offerings. An innovative new service called PatchCare® has been rolled out as an alternative to Live-In care and residential care, with the aim to keep people independent and in their own homes for as long as possible. Caremark carers are assigned to a local ‘patch’ of no more than 10 clients each. PatchCare® Assistants then deliver a wide range of personal care on these patches as and when they are needed between the hours of 7am and 10pm. This flexible approach has been designed to simplify home care and allows PatchCare® Assistants to react to clients in a more responsive way, as well as spend more time with them if needed. PatchCare® also tackles social isolation and lonliness as Clients are also encouraged to socialise with other PatchCare® clients if they want to, creating a sense of community in the process. Sarah-Louise explains, “One success story of a beneficiary of PatchCare® looks something like this. An 80 year old lady and beloved grandma who underwent a double hip operation is now walking again and cooking her own meals after support from Caremark.” Result! l Caremark Suite 3b, JYW House, Bridge Road, Haywards Heath, West Sussex RH16 1UA 01444 455800 midsussex@caremark.co.uk www.caremark.co.uk October 2019 | SUSSEX LIVING 45

CARE MONTH

FUTURE

PLANNING

Michelle Crowley from West Sussex County Council tells us about the latest local care initiatives

A

s we grow older we all want to be healthy and well. It’s important that we all look at how we can remain as independent as possible and live our lives with meaning and purpose. Estimates indicate that within the next 20 years the number of people aged 65 and over living in West Sussex will increase by more than 100,000. People aged 85 and over will make up a third of this increase. Here in West Sussex we know that older people contribute a huge amount to their families, communities, the workplace and volunteering and it’s important that people are able to continue to do this and live well as they become older. As 1st October marks Older People’s day, it’s a time to celebrate the contribution older people make to our communities and to encourage them and their families to look for advice and information about groups, activities, volunteering, financial plans, keeping well and living at home safely.

A new campaign being launched by the County Council aims to offer just that. As part of the campaign there is a survey that asks us what it’s like to age well in West Sussex and what more can be done. Over the next few months you can also discover a range of practical information, advice and activities that you can take part in, just sign-up to the newsletter at www.westsussex.gov.uk/agewell

As 1st October marks Older People’s day, it’s a time to celebrate the contribution older people make to our communities CONNECTING UP TO SUPPORT Perhaps you would benefit from a little extra help and support at home but don’t know where to look? Finding reliable information and advice about care and support can be

difficult and sometimes the choices can seem overwhelming. That’s where the West Sussex Connect to Support website comes in, www. westsussexconnecttosupport.org It’s designed for anyone in West Sussex who is looking for information and advice about ways to maintain their health and independence, as well as extra care and support with their daily life. You can also browse and shop for products and services, and discover local groups and activities across West Sussex. BE CARE WISE As we continue to live longer, it’s never been more important to think about our future care. If you’re thinking about long-term care for yourself or a loved one and you’re a bit concerned about how you might pay for it, think about contacting the Carewise care funding scheme. Whatever your financial circumstances Carewise can help you make the right choices and help you maintain a secure income to pay for good quality care at home or in your chosen care home. You wouldn’t take out a mortgage without financial advice, so don’t go without financial advice for long-term care funding. What’s more, your first consultation with a care fees specialist is free of charge. Visit the Carewise website at www.carewiseadvice.com or call 01243 642121 and choose the Carewise option. l October 2019 | SUSSEX LIVING 47

POWER OF ATTORNEY what you need to know

Should appointing an ‘attorney’ be on your financial to-do list? Hanna Prince takes a look at the process

T

he popularity of ‘Lasting Power of Attorney’ (LPA) arrangements is on the rise. More than 800,000 LPAs were taken out last year; three times the number granted in 2013. Nobody wants to dwell on what might happen should they lose the capacity to handle their own affairs – but planning for the worst can help protect your welfare and your family’s peace of mind.

WHAT IS A LASTING POWER OF ATTORNEY ? An LPA is a legal document that grants somebody else the power to act on your behalf. It’s designed to be used when mental capacity is lost, whether that’s through stroke, dementia, accident or other circumstance. There are actually two types of LPA, one relating to property and finance and the other to personal health and welfare. A property and financial affairs LPA gives your ‘attorney’ the power to manage your bank accounts, pay bills on your behalf, collect your pension and make decisions about your money and property. A health and welfare LPA will allow them to oversea your medical care and make important calls 50 SUSSEX LIVING | October 2019

such as when you might be moved into a care home. WHY DO I NEED ONE ? Unfortunately, many of us can expect to lose full mental capacity towards the end of our lives. Appointing an attorney while still in command of your faculties is a sensible move. If you’re judged to have lost mental capacity before filling in the Power of Attorney forms, your family or friends will need

There are two types of LPA, one relating to property and finance and the other to personal health and welfare

to apply through the court to become your ‘deputy’ – a long, expensive and sometimes intrusive process. According to Age UK, anyone over the age of 18 can set up a Power of Attorney. However, adds the charity, “if someone is diagnosed with a condition likely to cause loss of capacity, they may well be advised to think about who they want to make decisions for them when they can no longer do so.” HOW DO I APPLY ? It’s possible to set up and register an LPA yourself, but the process is complex and most people will employ a solicitor. If you do choose to go it alone, the first step is to download and fill in the appropriate forms from www.gov. uk. You’ll need to appoint a trusted friend or relative to be your attorney and find a ‘certificate provider’ to sign the forms. This can be somebody you’ve known for over two years or a professional with knowledge of your situation – but it can’t be a family member. Once the forms are signed and submitted to the Office of the Public Guardian along with payment, it can take between eight and ten weeks for registration to be complete. Issues can crop up during the process, so applying early is the best way to protect yourself and your family. l

MODERN PRACTICE. TRADITIONAL VALUES.

Lasting Powers of Attorney – what are the risks? Lasting Powers of Attorney (“LPA’s”) are documents which can be prepared by you to appoint another individual(s) to help you make decisions about your Property and Financial Affairs and/or your Health and Welfare, if you are unable to make these decisions yourself as you have lost capacity. These appointed individuals are known as Attorneys.

What powers are granted to the Attorney? When you create a Property and Financial affairs LPA, you’re granting your Attorneys wide powers over your assets, including access to your bank accounts, investments and the ability to sell your property. However you can limit the scope of their powers by placing restrictions in your LPA which they are legally obliged to follow. Similarly when you create a Health and Welfare LPA you’re granting your attorneys powers to make decisions about medical treatment for you if you have lost capacity, decisions on where you should live, your daily routine and even decisions on life sustaining treatment. Choose your Attorney carefully You should think carefully about whom you appoint as your Attorney as it should be somebody you trust to act in your best interests at all times. If you think there may be a dispute with your family and friends over your chosen Attorney you should consider notifying them at the outset of your intention to make an LPA to prevent any difficulties after the LPA is registered.

CARE MONTH

Would you like help in living life to the full? Debbie Beesley tells us about the WellBalanced Programme, designed for health, fitness and mobility

A

s people get older, muscles start to deteriorate as a natural part of ageing. Weakened muscles are not as strong to cope with everyday tasks such as getting up from a chair or walking, and balance can be affected. Reduced strength and balance can also increase the risk of falls, particularly for people aged 65 and over. Doing gentle regular exercises at least twice a week, in addition to taking a daily walk can help keep you strong and walking steadily, reducing the risk of falls. Suitable exercises include Tai Chi, Walking, Yoga, Dance, Bowling and Strength and Balance classes. Strength and balance programmes, such as the WellBalanced Programme, used across the world have been shown to reduce falls and injuries and these are available in Mid Sussex. The WellBalanced Programme is a community based exercise programme for people over 65 years of age who are at risk of falling. It provides a ‘step down’ service for those exiting the NHS falls prevention service or a step up for people unsteady on their feet wishing to prevent a fall.

I no longer need this, I am a lot more confident going out and coping with slopes. It keeps you motivated and I enjoyed meeting others. The instructors are excellent, they were very helpful. I am very grateful to have attended the classes.” l Interested? Ask your GP or Practice Nurse to refer you to Mid Sussex Wellbeing or please call 01444 477191 or email wellbeing@midsussex.gov.uk

CARE MONTH

Listening to Embracing Carers ambassador Karen Steadman is a humbling experience, like coming back to earth with a bump. Good health and wellbeing are never things to take for granted, as Robert Veitch found out

c

K

aren lives in Robertsbridge and has four children, plus two grandchildren. On the surface it seems a blissful existence, the same sort of thing many people experience. An ordinary person doing ordinary things. But there’s another story too, it’s a tale that Karen shares with many others, that of the unpaid carer. Back in 2004 when Karen was a primary school teacher, her mother Pauline was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. Initially life wasn’t too bad, but then her stepfather Roy was diagnosed with cancer and Alzheimer’s disease. Karen recalled, “At first, my mum and Roy could still drive, but once their driving licences were withdrawn, they lost their independence and gradually became increasingly dependent on myself and my brother Neil.” “My mum and Roy lived in Hadlow, forty-minutes away, up the busy A21. Neil lived nearby, in Tonbridge. We both helped out and worked as a team.” “Roy’s Alzheimer’s slowly got worse and my mum’s condition deteriorated imperceptibly” over the years that followed. Karen’s involvement gradually increased to the point where caring became a way of life for 2-3 years. It was the same for her brother. “Caring for someone else is tiring, it places restrictions on your own life.” Poignantly, she recalled, “Eventually, their need became greater than I could give.”

54 SUSSEX LIVING | October 2019

EMBRACING

CARERS

Ultimately, Karen left her teaching career as depression and ongoing anxiety affected her wellbeing. People like Karen is the reason why Embracing Carers™ has launched Time Counts, a call to action for people to give their time to a carer they know to offer support. From a five minute phone call to a two hour grocery shop – your time could make a real difference to someone

Eventually, their need became greater than I could give who is caring for a loved one. Karen noted, “We have been mostly able to manage ourselves, but it’s reassuring to know there are people out there willing to help.” Roy passed away about a year ago and Pauline is now in residential accommodation. Karen is working again, as a dinner lady in a Bodiam school. She delights in telling me, “I have a lovely

partner, he is very supportive and I have a very understanding family.” Life goes on. Karen and Neil now care for their father. “Our dad manages, but he needs help. He’s ‘safe’ at home, but at 83 we need to look out for him. My brother does a lot for dad. Sometimes I just like to sit and pass time with my dad.” Carers often get little support or recognition for the work they do and are often selfless, taking care of their loved ones first and far too often, ignoring their own needs. This is where Time Counts can help people to make a difference in the life of a carer, like Karen, by giving their time.. Like her brother, and so many others who live a similar life, Karen is not the least bit ordinary, she’s one of those extraordinary people, doing extraordinary things. l www.embracingcarers.com

CARE MONTH

Shine a light

ON CARERS RIGHTS DAY

Carers Rights Day shines a light on the unpaid efforts of voluntary carers across the land, as well as highlighting the option of in-home respite care, to create a lifeline and give these heroes a break, writes Nicky Newham

R

espite care is short-term care provided for very old or very sick people so the person who usually cares for them can have a break. Carers Rights Day, on Thursday 21st November, highlights and recognises the UK’s unpaid carers – many of whom seek support, to provide respite care in their own homes not just for the elderly but also younger people with special needs. Angela Scott, from Littlehampton, relies on in-home care to support her in caring for her youngest child, Gabby, who has Cerebral palsy. At seven years old, Gabby can’t speak, and it’s likely her condition will deteriorate as she gets older. “Gabby goes to a specialist primary school and I volunteer with adults with learning difficulties,” said Angela. “Without regular visits from Gabby’s care worker, I don’t know what I would do. Sending Gabby to a respite centre wouldn’t work for us as a family. It’s a shame people think respite care means sending their loved one away for days at a time. That just isn’t the case.” Angela first sought support when Gabby was nine months old. With support, Angela can have some one56 SUSSEX LIVING | October 2019

on-one time with her three elder children. After seven years, Gabby is still cared for by the same small team of care workers – something Angela is extremely grateful for. “Gabby loves spending time with her carers, and because she is only seven, it’s important to me that her care is consistent. If I sent her into a respite

Gabby loves spending time with her carers centre, she might be seeing a different person every time which would be unsettling for her. Because her care worker comes to see us at home, I’m given a much-needed break and feel safe in the knowledge that Gabby is in a safe environment where she feels happy.” Despite the positive impact respite centres have on communities, the financial burden is a consideration for a lot of parents. With the average cost of a few days in a facility upwards of £300, the fees can become unmanageable if regular breaks are needed. In-home respite care can be

provided for a few hours – allowing time to pop to the shops and see friends – or live-in care can be arranged by many providers. Andrew Demetriou, who runs an in-home respite care provider, understands the benefit of these muchneeded breaks for unpaid carers who silently support the vulnerable. “Caring for a loved one is a rewarding role and, for many, a considerable responsibility. Without the possibility of a shortterm break, a carer’s ability to care is sacrificed, which can lead to their loved one needing to go into long-term facilities. It’s important to understand respite care centres are not the only option available and a few hours of inhome care every week may provide a lifeline.” l

uring Breast Cancer Awareness Month around 5,000 people will be diagnosed with the disease, which is the most common form of cancer in the UK. While research breakthroughs in how breast cancer is detected, diagnosed and treated means that today almost 9 out of 10 people survive breast cancer for five years or more, there is still much more work to be done. A diagnosis of breast cancer can be devastating. In a bid to help others living with breast cancer, Cuckfield-born Lucy Harris has chosen to share her story, highlighting the importance of both emotional support and the need to fund further research into some of the rarer forms of the disease. Raised in a theatrical family, Lucy has channelled her creativity into a career as a Theatrical Costumier, touring across Europe and throughout the UK with both opera and

But 10 years ago, the pull of the Sussex countryside brought her back to the county for a job as Running Wardrobe Manager at a local opera house. It was against this backdrop of a busy working life that Lucy was given a diagnosis of breast cancer at the age of 43 years old. “When you first get diagnosed with breast cancer everyone wants to know what type you have,” she tells me. “I was diagnosed with a relatively rare form of triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) which is not fuelled by oestrogen or any other hormone. Unlike oestrogen receptive breast cancer, there are no suppressants such as tamoxifen that you can take once you’ve finished treatment to help inhibit the cancer’s return, so it feels a bit like being left out at sea with nothing to protect you.” Only 15% of breast cancer sufferers are diagnosed with TNBC. was after my hair had grown back, I’d returned to work and resumed my life that I found I needed emotional support because although I now looked ‘normal’ I didn’t feel it.” This is a feeling that Lucy and Katharine’s breast cancer nurse Maria Daultrey recognises from decades of practise. “There’s nothing equal to being with somebody that you don’t have to tell your story to because you both share that story and often it’s after patients have finished their treatment that it hits them. It’s then that they need the emotional support to process their experience of breast cancer,” she explains. While Lucy feels that the cancer has robbed her of the freedom of health, she was determined that it would not define her. “Positivity has been an important part of my recovery and during treatment I carried on working as much as possible. Everyone at work was fantastic. Human kindness is a powerful medicine which I found a huge source of strength and comfort to get me though each day and I’d encourage people to reach out and build a support network because you’re not alone.” Post-treatment both Lucy and Katharine recognise the importance

of embracing survivorship, along with building relaxation into their lives through mindfulness, meditation, yoga, a walk in the forest, as well as screen-free time. Lucy is also an avid fundraiser for Breast Cancer Care, a charity which helped her enormously. “I think it’s important to give back and I hope that some of the money donated can go into raising awareness of triple negative breast cancer, funding research into what fuels this type of cancer and finding a targeted therapy to deal with it.” Richard Simcock, Lucy’s oncologist explains, “There is an urgent need to understand the abnormalities and weaknesses within triple negative tumours. I am hoping that current trials will lead to more effective treatments for triple negative breast cancer so that our cure rates match those of patients with the hormone-fuelled type of this disease.” As early detection leads to better outcomes, Lucy urges all women to be body aware and Breast Cancer Care offers an excellent guide on how to check your breasts. “I’ve had to adapt my lifestyle but positive thinking, giving something back and the phenomenal support out there has helped to get me through.” l www.breastcancercare.org.uk

With National Burn Awareness Day on the 16th October, burns nurse Kristina Stiles tells us about prevention and awareness

I

have been a burns nurse for 16 years, working as part of a specialist team of NHS professionals in supporting lives and recovery of burn survivors and their families. In the last year I joined a wonderful team at the Katie Piper Foundation – a burn survivor charity – in establishing the first UK-based Rehabilitation Centre for adults living with the consequences of burns. Most of the burn survivors who attend our Centre have been injured in their adult life, however a surprising amount of individuals suffered burns in their early childhood, which continue to impact their life throughout adulthood. It is not a coincidence that the slogan of this year’s National Burn Awareness Day, supported by the British Burn Association and the Children’s Burns Trust, is a testament to this and proclaims that ‘a burn injury is for life’. The majority of burn injuries are preventable and most of them happen at home. Luckily, many of them are minor and do not require hospital admission or surgery. However, what is evident is that often the general public are unsure about the correct immediate first aid, which means that burns are subject to inappropriate and ineffective practices like application of toothpaste, creams, butter or ice. This can lead to deepening of the burn, which may then require a skin graft operation and result in life-long scarring. The Family Oops and Burns First Aid is a book for children and families, and is my personal contribution to the burn awareness campaign. A rhyming story, which introduces the reader to an accident-prone family who are not aware of burn prevention. The narrative raises awareness of the dangers of sunburn, hot drink scalds, hair straightener burns and the use of accelerants on open flames. The characters in the book attend a school to learn the importance of appropriate burns first aid, which is key in reducing the pain, depth and size of the burn. Upon graduation from the school the family want to share the messages they’ve learned, taking burn awareness beyond the classroom and the immediate family circle – making sure to promote healthy, connected and burn aware communities locally. 64 SUSSEX LIVING | October 2019

Learn Burn

I managed to find a lovely local illustrator, Jill Latter, and some wonderful organisations working in risk prevention, emergency response, children’s burns and trauma, wound care and chemical safety came forward to support the printing and publication of the book. It is now available on request from the Children’s Burns

Trust and can be downloaded from the website here: www.cbtrust.org.uk/burnprevention/first-aid/. Happily, it has already travelled across the UK, the US and Australia too. I am incredibly proud to have witnessed such wonderful acts of kindness from everyone involved along my journey in making The Family Oops and Burns First Aid. I hope that by sharing messages in burn prevention and first aid through reading and storytelling, the Family Oops can bring our communities closer together, and educate and nurture our future generations of burn first aiders from a very young age. l Please, follow and support the National Burn Awareness Day on 16th of October 2019 via #BeBurnsAware, #SafeTea, and #FamilyOops hashtags.

BEAUTY & FASHION

What is smart casual? Well, with no definitive answer it’s a tricky one, but Sara Whatley shares her thoughts on the matter

SMART CASUAL

Conundrum E

ver been flummoxed by an invitation that has a dress code of smart casual? Or a smart casual work place? You are not alone. It can be a bit of a nightmare as smart casual has such a broad range between its extremities – smarter than tracky bums but probably less smart than a tie. Meaning, it could be anything! It’s definitely easier for women to dress smart casual than men, so I’m leaving the women behind to fend for themselves while I concentrate on the men. If in doubt, I say go for the smarter end; you can never be over-dressed, right? Smart casual means different things in different circumstances. I was talking to someone the other day

66 SUSSEX LIVING | October 2019

who was about to go on a ranch holiday, and the dress code? Western Chic! The men don smart jeans, cowboy boots, shirt with collar and a casual jacket and, of course, Stetson. For ladies it’s cowboy boots

If in doubt, I say go for the smarter end; you can never be over-dressed, right? with trousers, skirt or dress, a braided shawl or top and possibly a Stetson with feminine overtones – make of that what you will! The very same man noted that it is always possible to recognise an off-duty army bod by their

chinos, short sleeved shirt and buttoned up collar. To some that would be pretty smart, but it’s all about context. One of the first things to consider when trying to solve your smart casual conundrum is where you are going. If your event is at a swanky club or hotel, shorts or jeans and a light shirt probably aren’t going to cut it, but if it’s a garden party then shiny lace up shoes might be overstepping the mark. Consider the weather too. Summer smart casual dressing is

a bit harder as shorts are definitely on the casual end of smart casual, but you can certainly pep them up with a crisp shirt and some tidy deck shoes. Cooler weather gives you more options with jackets, smart jumper and chinos. A long woollen collared jacket will instantly smarten up your look and keep you toasty warm too! Whatever you choose, wear it with conviction and make it work for you. You could create yourself a smart casual ‘look’ and play with iterations of that, for example; tailored jeans, tucked in white shirt and waist coat, nice leather boots. Another good trick is to give yourself options. If you dress in layers – t-shirt, shirt, thin jumper – you can take off and put on depending on the main dress code around you. Even keep a tie in your pocket for if the occasion suddenly requires it! And finally, grooming. It goes without saying that a good shave, styled hair and whiff of fine aftershave all go a long way in the style stakes and will never leave you overdressed and feeling foolish. l

BODY BUZZ

WELCOME TO

THE PARTY!

This month, Sasha Kanal enjoys the exercise for people who don’t like to exercise, learning that beginners are just as welcome as experts. Pump up the music, pop on the lycra, it’s time to Zumba!

W

learning these kind of dance styles in isolation. Although it’s an instructor-led workout, you don’t have to follow their moves exactly. The actions are a little more open to interpretation, so it’s great for beginner and advanced levels alike. Because of the fun factor and its upbeat vibe, Zumba seems to be the perfect regime for people who don’t actually like to exercise. FUN, FUN, FUN… But with all this ‘fun,’ is it actually a good workout? In short, it’s a resounding ‘yes’ and here’s why. A scientific analysis of a Zumba class revealed that a 40 minute class will burn around 370 calories – roughly

MOVE YOUR BODY Zumba is a full body workout but in disguise. With its dance-choreographed activity, all muscle groups are used. Heavy on the step count and with lots of hip and torso movements, it’s also beneficial for core strength and flexibility. Coordination is also tested and like anything, will improve the more you do it. Any Zumba devotee will tell you that they don’t view classes as hard work, simply because they’re having SO much fun. This is good news, because it means people are more likely to return again and make classes a regular habit. Perfect for enabling and building a healthy lifestyle. ALTOGETHER NOW The very act of joining in and losing your inhibitions as you dance is wonderful for building confidence and affecting your mental health in a wholly positive way. We all know the great sense of camaraderie and bonding to be had in totally letting go while in the company of others. Make the wrong move or make a fool of yourself briefly? No matter, you’re not the only one, so laugh it off and carry on! It’s ‘so’ good for the soul. l

anna salsa, merengue and shimmy your way to fitness but without learning the complicated dance moves? Then Zumba, a Latin dance-inspired workout, may be the answer to all your prayers. 12 million people can’t be wrong – Zumba is reportedly one of the most popular exercise classes on the planet performed in over 125 countries around the world. What’s the Buzz? According to afficionados, it’s the fusion of different dance moves such as reggaeton and flamenco set to Latin music that keeps it so interesting and varied. Zumba is also a little more relaxed compared to

equivalent to a slow paced run or bike ride, but this time with added smiles all round. It’s a little like an interval workout too, with participants going back and forth between high and low intensity movements. Oxygenation and heart rates during a Zumba class were impressive, meaning it’s a cardiovascular activity on a par with a kickboxing class or step aerobics.

The powder blue front door offers just the tiniest hint of what you’ll find inside this white-painted Victorian terrace that is home to self-confessed colour addict Suzanne Smith and her husband of 8 years, Matt. Step across the threshold and you are welcomed into a home that immediately excites the senses with its rainbow of colours, patchwork of patterns, and cute kitsch collections. “I was never able to decorate my room in my childhood home as I wanted,” explains Suzanne, “so 13 years ago, when Matt and I left our respective parents and moved in together I was eager to make my mark. I am incredibly lucky that Matt is very easy going and trusts me entirely, and that he does actually feel comfortable

with the décor, which, it has to be said, is more feminine what with all the flowers, bunting and lots of pink.” Suzanne masterminded a complete overhaul of their first home, which when they bought it was already pretty colourful, but not really in the right way, as she explains: “The sitting room had yellow painted textured wallpaper on the walls, orange curtains, and a diamond-pattern terracotta coloured carpet. In the kitchen/diner, the walls were a bright orange at one end, a mid blue at the other, a combination that continued into the bedroom that I now use as a craft room; the master bedroom, meanwhile, was a rusty red.” Needless to say, since moving in, the couple have gradually transformed the house: gutting the ill-planned kitchen and the carpeted bathroom, stripping off the 1990s wallpaper throughout, and beginning the seemingly never-ending task of replastering the walls and ceilings; and Suzanne is doing her utmost to calm the once dated decor with some warm off-whites to show off her colourful accessories and the furniture she loves to upcycle with jolly paint shades. “I’ve tried to let go of the concept of colour scheming,” she says. “But there are certain tones that do feature all around

of shelves and inserted into door panels; this home celebrates them all. And the pattern doesn’t stop there: Suzanne has hung flowery curtains; laid layers of quilted and crochet blankets on the bed, and on the sitting room sofa and chair; recovered dining seats with vintage fabric remnants; and dotted cute lamps, rugs, and cushions at every turn. And then there are all those collections that can’t help but induce a warm fuzzy feeling for people of a certain age… “When I was made redundant from my retail career a few years ago, I started The Junk Dolly, initially upcycling furniture, but now sourcing and selling preloved items; I want to try to communicate that choosing vintage items for your home isn’t going to make it look like great aunt Beryl’s fusty house, but instead can evoke a sense of nostalgia, become a talking point, and most importantly add fun to your décor so that you smile as soon as you arrive home.” The Smiths’ home certainly feels very happy. “Both of us love living here,” says Suzanne, “and know it’s going to be a hard place to leave if and when we decide to move; but maybe we never will!” l

BLOOMING TIMES

MOULDY MAGIC

LEAVES

Welcome to the wonderful world of leaf mould. What is it? How to make it? How to use it? Flo Whitaker explains all

A

ll decaying plant matter will eventually turn into compost but different materials decompose at different speeds. Soft vegetable peelings and grass clippings can rot down in a few weeks, whereas tree leaves take a year or more. Leaves with glossy surfaces or tough veins, (sycamore, horse chestnut, laurel, holly) take even longer, which is why tree leaves are best composted separately from general garden/kitchen waste. Compost containers have solid sides and lids to raise the temperature of the

heap and aid the composting process, but a leaf mould container, (‘bin’), requires no insulation – leaves decompose faster when exposed to cold, wind and rain. A bin can be easily constructed by using wooden posts, (tree stakes or 2” x 2” tanalised timbers are ideal) a roll of chicken mesh netting, staples and galvanised wire. Drive the posts into the ground to make the outline shape of your container, then wrap the mesh horizontally around the outside of the posts, securing with staples hammered into the posts as you go. Overlap the netting slightly and ‘stitch’

the overlapped edges together with galvanised wire to make a cage, (wear gloves – the wire ends can be sharp!) What size of leaf mould bin? Well, think about how much material you’re likely to collect. A pile of newlyfallen leaves takes up a lot of space, so make your bin as large as possible. Decomposed leaves will eventually reduce to about a third of their original volume. If DIY is not your thing, vigorously stab an old compost bag with a border fork to make drainage/ aeration holes. Two-thirds fill the bag with leaves, loosely turn over the top, hide it away behind the shed and you’ll have leaf mould next October. Don’t overfill the bag or tightly secure the top – the leaves need good airflow otherwise they’ll rot into a sludgy mess. Builders’ bulk bags aren’t pretty but they make excellent leaf mould containers; again, be sure to add plenty of drainage/aeration holes. Leaf mould is naturally low in nutrients. When finely sieved, it makes perfect seed compost, (many seedlings do better in ‘weak’ soil.) Add coarser leaf mould to your borders, either dug in as a soil improver or spread thickly as a weed-supressing mulch. Its waterretention properties are unsurpassed; a few spadefuls mixed into a barrow load of potting compost will ensure your patio pots and hanging baskets never dry out again. Our planet could not exist without leaves. They convert sunlight into food, lock up harmful carbon dioxide and release life-giving oxygen into our atmosphere. Even fallen leaves keep on working – creating perfect conditions for beneficial soil microbes to thrive. Oldtime gardeners referred to leaf mould as ‘Black Gold’. How right they were. l

Leaf mould’s waterretention properties are unsurpassed

LOCAL WALK

Southease to

LEWES WALK

This month our top wanderer, Robert Veitch, takes a train to Southease before walking the high road back to Lewes across the South Downs

T

o enjoy all the benefits of this route and magnificent landscape, walk it on a clear day when the scenery disappears into infinity. Alighting at Southease Station, take the track behind platform two and follow it around the bends towards the River Ouse and Southease swing bridge. Cross the swing bridge, before taking the gate on the right. Take the path atop the levee and follow the Ouse upstream. The smooth dome of Mount Caburn will be in the distance. After about half a mile there’s a gate, then half a mile later, there’s another. Turn left, away from the river, down the slope and along the track. The track leads through a gateway and under telephone cables towards Rodmell – reversing the final journey of the village’s most widely known resident, Virginia Woolf. Beyond a metal gate, the track evolves into tarmac, which leads through Rodmell. The flint walled buildings give the place a nostalgic serenity and elegance in dappled sunlight. Once at the main road, cross with care to Mill Lane opposite. Walk to the left of the barn with the electric blue paintwork. It’s half a mile to the end of the road, but civilisation finishes before then. Be sure to turn around on the ascent of Mill Hill

94 SUSSEX LIVING | October 2019

to inhale the views. Even with a small gain in height there’s still a wow factor. At the top of Mill Hill, turn right onto the South Downs Way, walking between the feathered edge fencing panels. Beyond the metal gate, the majesty of the Downs opens up. Wander down into the col, then once through the pair of metal gates, continue up to a wooden gate. Beyond this is a concrete track, which seems a little other-worldy in this landscape. Follow the concrete over Front Hill and then Iford Hill. After a mile the concrete turns sharp left, but our route turns sharp right. After 50m and once through a gate, it turns left and leads to the summit of

Even with a small gain in height there’s still a wow factor Swanborough Hill, which at 180m (591 feet) is the high point of the day. The surface underfoot is packed hardcore, which somehow feels more natural than the concrete. The path veers left around a bend and a first view of Kingston appears. Continue to the wooden gate, then 75m beyond it on Kingston Hill, take the path to the right by the fingerpost. It passes a burial mound before the

descent begins. The track of chalk and flint drops away steeply, losing 100m of altitude over the next 800m of distance as it snakes downhill to a metal gate. By the time the tarmac of Kingston Ridge appears, the outlying homes of suburbia border the route. The road dips down to the junction with Ashcombe Hollow. Cross with care onto the historic Juggs Road. This was once a route to Brighton, and Juggs was a term for Brighton fisherman, whose wives would transport their husbands’ catch across the Downs in baskets or earthenware jugs, loaded onto donkeys. Past the replica of Ashcombe Mill, built around 90 years after the original was destroyed by high winds in 1916, lies the last of the open downland; a final

chance to enjoy the expansive panorama on this walk. Beyond a redundant gate, the path follows the field boundary, beneath the trees, gradually widening, eventually giving way to tarmac once again. It’s gently downhill, dropping away a little more steeply as the drone of traffic increases in volume. After natural sounds of the walk, traffic noise feels a bit of a shock. A sharp left precedes the bridge across the A27 and railway. It seems more like crossing a gorge, but once over it, the road turns sharp right and leads downhill past Jubilee Gardens to a t-junction. Turn left, and then right at the mini-roundabout onto Southover High Street. It’s a delightful road, with a seemingly endless variety of buildings along the way. After almost half a mile, turn left at the mini-roundabout and Lewes Station will be a minute or two away. It might be time to head home, or it might be time to head into town for a well-deserved treat. Your feet will tell you the answer! l Robert has tested the route personally, making sure it is suitable for walking. However, even he cannot guarantee the effects of the weather, or roadworks, or any other factors outside of his control. If you would like to send your feedback about a local walk, please email editorial@sussexliving.com

PUZZLE PAGE SUDOKU

A simple process of logic is all that it takes to solve each puzzle in this game. Put the numbers 1 to 9 in each vertical column and each horizontal line. Each number must appear only once in each column and line and in each of the 3x3 boxes in the grid.

Place a different arithmetical sign (add, subtract, multiply, divide) in each circle so that the total of each line across and down is the same. Perform the first calculation in each line first and ignore the mathematical law which says you should always perform division and multiplication before addition and subtraction.

Each number in the grid represents a different letter of the alphabet. You have three letters in the control grid to start you off. Enter them in the appropriate squares in the main grid, then use your knowledge of words to work out which letters should go in the missing squares. As you get the letters, fill in other squares with the same number in the main grid and control grid. Check off the alphabetical list of letters as you identify them.
