ditchling film society: the moo man Ditchling Village Hall, 18 Lewes Road, Ditchling BN6 8TT

Directors: Andy Heathcote, Heike Bachelier. UK 2012. 97 mins. A remarkable documentary about Steve Hook, a maverick farmer running a small family dairy farm in East Sussex. Turning his back on cost cutting practices, Hook sells his unpasteurised milk via farmers’ markets and doorstep deliveries instead of supermarkets, as the latter are not prepared to pay the going rate. Apart from being a fascinating insight into the way in which the agricultural world works, it is a particularly moving and satisfying portrait of a compassionate, decent man who loves his animals. Doors open at 7.30pm. Refreshments and parking. Guests and temporary members

ditchling film society: in the House (15) Village Hall, 18 Lewes Road, Ditchling

Francois Ozon, France 2012, 105 mins. A high school French teacher gets increasingly drawn into a precocious student’s story about his relationship with a friend’s family. The teacher’s eagerness to sharpen up his pupils’ writing tell us about his own stalled creativity, his petty prejudices and marriage to an art gallery manager, played beautifully by Kristin Scott Thomas. The stories play up to an unhealthy curiosity about the lives of others. Made by the same director as La Potiche, the film is a naughty, insightpacked provocation which never takes its seriousness too seriously. Doors open 7.30pm. Refreshments and parking. Guests and temporary members are welcome for a small charge.
