Magical Mind Jamie Crow talks to acclaimed children’s author and illustrator Chris Riddell about his inventive imagination, love of the Sussex coast and his eagerness to inspire the next generation of creative youngsters
F
rom the moment I started talking to Chris Riddell, it was clear how passionate he continues to be about his work. Even if you didn’t know his name, it’s highly likely you would have come across his artwork and writing at some point; his unique style of line drawings have kept him at the top of illustrator lists for many writers and publishers for decades. His achievements led him to be awarded the UK Children’s Laureate from 20152017 and his catalogue is full of awardwinning achievements, many of which were conceived and put together during his time in Sussex over the years. Chris’ children’s series with author Paul Stewart, The Edge Chronicles, an epic fantasy full of extraordinary creatures and swashbuckling pirates with flying ships, have sold more than three million copies worldwide in over 20 languages. His love of drawing came at a very young age, with one of his earliest memories involving some crayons and one of the walls at a vicarage in North Yorkshire, where his father was working at the time. “Needless to say, he was not happy with the result!” Chris laughingly recalls. In a more serious attempt to assist with his young passion, his mother placed a large pack of A1 sketch paper in the family playroom. “I used to go to the cupboard, take out these great big pieces of paper and draw, but the paper never seemed to run out,” he says. “It turned out my mother was secretly cutting out the bits of
studied under yet another famous illustrator, Raymond Briggs, who was partially responsible for giving Chris his first commission. “Raymond was encouraging and I liked him because he did what he taught,” says Chris. “A publisher wanted to commission him for a book, so he used their interest as a ploy to get them to meet some of his students. When they arrived in Brighton, I was the only one in the room, everyone else was off doing assessments or upstairs making tea. I couldn’t believe it. They looked at some of my work and I was commissioned there and then for a book of fairy tales.” His big break as a writer came some time later, after he showed some of his drawings to another publisher, but was instead asked to present a story he had written himself. “I told them I had lots, but not with me, so they asked me to come back the next day with one,” he laughs. “I didn’t have anything! But I went home that night and created a tale based on some of my own childhood fears, that feeling there might be something under the bed. I went back the next day and they commissioned it.”
He enjoys using his platform to motivate young people to pursue their creative side tells me the pair conceived the series over a couple of years, meeting weekly at a pub in Brighton when they were both living in the city. Their first novel, Beyond The Deepwoods, was released at the height of a fantasy renaissance within the literature industry in the late 1990s. “I have always been drawn to fantasy,” he says. “I love the world-building.” But his own work as both an artist and writer stretches far beyond these popular tales.
paper around my drawings and returning them to the cupboard for me.” Through his school years, he was known as “the kid who loved art”, and from childhood was influenced by famed illustrators such as Sir John Tenniel and William Heath Robinson. The latter was especially known for his drawings of wild and wonderful machines, something clearly represented in Chris’s work. Another major influence on his own career was his tutor at A-Level, a former cartoonist from Fleet Street named Jack Johnson, who encouraged Chris to go on to art school. After moving to Brighton, he

Since then, Chris has gone on to have a career spanning over 35 years, with dozens of published books and hundreds of illustrations, making a name for himself as one of the top names in children’s literature, while also carving a career as a political cartoonist. When asked about his proudest achievements, he talks about a number of his popular titles, including Goth Girl, a series focusing on a young girl in a castle, something which Chris began to write to entertain his daughter. He also released a picture book in 2010 called Alienography, which presented many of his wacky creations as beings from outer
Talking and drawing to a reader is one of the greatest pleasures in life for me space. “I love that title dearly because it was very silly,” he says. A lot of the inspiration for the book came from one of his favourite novels, The Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy. Chris is considered a bit of an inspiration within the children’s fantasy genre, and he enjoys using his platform to motivate young people to pursue their creative side.
He’s travelled the world to talk to schoolchildren and adults alike about the joys of writing and drawing. One of his more recent talks was to 300 students at a book awards early this year in Hurstpierpoint, in which he entertained the audience by putting his on point drawings onto a projector, as shortlisted authors read aloud from their stories. “Events like that feel like a lifetime ago now,” he says. “Talking and drawing to a reader is one of the greatest pleasures in life for me.” Hopefully it’s something he can eventually get back into as the schools reopen this month. Following the COVID-19 pandemic this year, he says maintaining a creative culture is more important than ever before. “We live in interesting times and we still need storytellers. When times are hard, it’s easy to look at more practical routes forward rather than the creative. So I try to talk about the creative process in my talks as much as possible. It’s also incredible how much the visual arts can help with wellbeing and, in the digital era, the tools are out there more than ever before to be creative, whether that’s writing, drawing, painting, or playing music. Trying to engage with the creative process and reach an audience of like-minded people is key.”
For anyone aspiring to be a writer or illustrator, Chris has one piece of significant advice which has been essential in his own career. “Buy a notebook or a sketchbook,” he says. “Write and draw in it every day, and keep it with you at all times, even when you sleep. If you dream about something inventive, mark it down. Use that pad as your workshop – a pen and paper is where everything starts.” l

Hanna Prince shares the challenges – and the unexpected rewards - of home parenting during lockdown
O
n day one of lockdown, my child of 18 months discovered the stationery drawer. While the fouryear-old was building with building blocks and I was sending a quick work email, she systematically decorated the fridge, the legs of the kitchen table and the dog’s front paws with scribbles, glue and glitter. “I can’t take this anymore!” I shrieked to my husband, who was awkwardly trying to work in bed with his laptop on his knees. “This is only the beginning,” he darkly replied. All of us faced our own personal struggles during lockdown. For some it was anxiety, loneliness, frustration or concern about loved ones. For us it
was trying to stop our pre-schoolers causing one another actual bodily harm while we frantically juggled work and childcare commitments. Unlike parents of school-age kids, we weren’t faced with the prospect of re-learning fractions, coaching recalcitrant students in their times tables or labouring through online cardio and yoga routines every morning. On the other hand, our kids require constant supervision and entertainment. They also have wildly differing needs. Okay, so we could plonk the fouryear-old in front of the TV for half an hour to meet a particularly pressing work deadline. Meanwhile though, the younger one would be emptying the
saucepan cupboard, grabbing fistfuls of compost out of the house plants or trying to suck one of the dog’s tennis balls. While parenting pre-schoolers was certainly no walk in the park, we didn’t envy our friends with school-age children either. Most had started the home-schooling routine with a strict timetable and ambitions to have their kids reading Sophocles in the original text before the first term was out. By day three, most seemed to have given up on the textbooks and resorted to video games and endless ice cream instead. Towards the end of March, I got a tearful phone call from a friend with an eight-year-old son.

“I can’t teach him anything,” she wailed. “He just wants to know the answers – and when I won’t tell him, he asks Alexa!” Even friends with children at secondary school were struggling, complaining about their kids moping over the loss of social interaction and exchanging emoji texts with friends instead of concentrating during virtual lessons. We were worried about our kids too. How was the four-year-old going to manage without her nursery friends
There was no escaping to the playground to entertain them and her play dates? Would months of seeing nobody but her own parents turn the younger one into an antisocial mess? There was no escaping to the playground to entertain them – no soft play, no zoos, no swimming, no baby groups, none of the things that usually break up the day for parents with energetic young children. In a way, I think it was harder on my husband. As a work-from-home freelancer, I was used to picking up the brunt of childcare when the kids weren’t or with their Sussex Livingat- playgroup half page - Aug 2020.qxp_Layout 1
grandmas. He, on the other hand, was expected to entertain two grouchy pre-schoolers through the interminable hours of the lockdown afternoon. And yet we knew that we were the lucky ones. We live in a rural area of Sussex with plenty of walks on the doorstep. Even more crucial for lockdown sanity, we have a garden. It could have been a whole lot worse. In fact, as the sky emptied of contrail lines, thePage sounds 11/08/2020 16:25 1 of traffic noise
receded and the natural world seemed to be breathing a sigh of relief, we even began to enjoy this strange new routine. It was relaxing not to be man-handling the kids into the car every morning as we rushed to nursery, the shops or yet another playdate. It was rather glorious experiencing the silence and the feeling of a world slowing down. In the end, we didn’t just survive lockdown. Tantrums, fist fights and the weight of extra work aside…we sort of enjoyed it. l

HALLWAY “When we pulled up the old carpet in the hallway, we discovered these original tiles,” says Darren. “It’s so wonderful to get nice surprises like that when you’re doing up a house.”
arren Peskett, a former builder turned vintage shop owner, lives in a two-storey townhouse in Worthing with his partner Maisy Jane and their two Jack Russell dogs, Diddy, three, and Samson, seven. The house, which dates from 1905, is a five minute walk from the beach. For Darren, renovating a house is an adventure that begins the minute you first peer
through the door and imagine living there. His current home’s story began in 2009 when he bought the three-bedroom property from an elderly lady who had not touched the décor for decades. “I don’t want to be rude, so I will just say it all looked rather ‘tired’,” says Darren, with a smile that suggests he faced far greater challenges than simply refreshing paintwork to bring this house back to life.
GARDEN Darren’s back garden is a perfect seaside sun trap and contains a healthy trawl of vintage fishing accessories

“We got cracking straight away,” he says. “We were pretty much living rough in the house at first and everything took longer because we could only do it in stages. We both had full-time jobs and every time we got enough money in the pot, we spent weekends and evenings working on this place.” Darren and Maisy Jane called on professionals for some electrical, plastering and carpentry projects, but otherwise did most of the renovations themselves. They wanted to restore the house’s traditional features like cornices, so stripped off layers and layers of old paint by hand, a painstakingly lengthy process that Darren describes as a real labour of love. The first room to be tackled was the main bathroom, and the entire design scheme was based around a bath that Darren simply had to have. “My friend sells these huge copper beauties,” he explains. “It’s so deep that when filled it is pretty heavy. We had to reinforce the floor before fitting it.” That turned out to be a blessing in disguise, because when the floor was lifted, it revealed rotten ceiling joists damaged by years of leaky pipes. “Which probably explains why when we turned on the shower it ran down the dining room walls,” says Darren.

In Darren’s house, vintage accessories are everywhere. This film canister and shoe last live on a kitchen shelf
Darren gave careful thought to the blend of tones in each room
Darren made more positive discoveries when he stripped back years of bad paint to find original tile surrounds on all the fireplaces. A tired hallway carpet was hiding original floor tiles in near-perfect condition. As the couple worked from room to room, they highlighted these original details with traditional colour schemes. Having started his career as a painter and decorator, Darren gave careful thought to the blend of tones in each room. “I love the way colour can give a room an instant personality,” he says. “My office, a warm pinky taupe, is my personal favourite.” Another favourite is the front doorstep. Darren kept seeing a lump of stone leant against the fence of a stone mason he visited while working on houses for building clients, then one day he asked for a ‘best price’ on it. £100 later and it was his, with a smooth bullnose front carved in for good measure. “It will be part of this house forever now,” he says. “You’ve got to give something back to a building when you

bring it back to life, you’ve got to do something that will last.” Darren has always been a fan of all things old, but he also likes to be different. “It’s not just about finding beautiful pieces,” he says. “I like to find a new use for them.” Hence the coffee sack kitchen blinds, or even the bedside tables in the main bedroom at the front of the house that were coffee dispensers in a past life. The kitchen that opens onto the back garden was the couple’s design finale. “We stayed very conservative throughout the rest of the house,” he says. “This was the last room we did and we put everything into it.” A wall that divided the kitchen and dining room was removed and it left a large blank canvas on which the couple could work their vintage magic. “We took the walls back to brick for a more industrial feel,” says Darren. “I aged

the zinc for the countertops on the shed roof to make it look antique. Two huge French dressers were cut up to make the units and we didn’t just stick to ‘kitchen’ style accessories.” Ledges and shelves are full of handbeaten tin pots, shoe lasts and even the odd film canister – all picked up from local car boot sales or antique fairs. During the four and a half years they spent doing up the house, Darren and Maisy Jane would set their alarm ready for dawn raids in search of these pieces. “It was our only time off from either work or working on the house,” says Darren. “We found some great pieces, like the sitting room sofa that someone was giving away free to collect, and the large star wall plaque in the kitchen that was made for American Cold War storage racking.” The couple amassed a sizeable collection of things, which they kept adding to, after the house was full. So, almost by chance, Darren found himself a new career. After finishing the house, he hung up his building tools to devote himself to sourcing and selling vintage furniture and accessories. A new adventure has begun. l Photography: Julia Toms/Narratives Styling & Writing: Sian Lewis/Narratives

HOMES
Planet-friendly
LIVING Beautiful, sustainable and cheap to maintain, it’s no surprise that eco homes are popping up everywhere from city centres to the remote countryside. Hanna Prince explores the appeal of sustainable housing
F
rom straw bale hobbit homes to chic carbon neutral flats, eco homes are awe-inspiringly diverse. The one thing most have in common is that they are designed to have minimal impact on the environment – both in the materials used in their construction and in the energy they take to run. Whether you’re dreaming of your own self-build project or considering giving your current property an eco-makeover, here’s what you need to know about the green housing trend. LOW-IMPACT CONSTRUCTION The goal for a genuine eco house is to consider the planet from design to demolition, which often means that natural, sustainable materials are used in the construction process. These could be anything from recycled steel and Forestry Stewardship Certified (FSC) timber, to straw bales, lime, sheep’s wool and cellulose insulation. Many self-build eco homes
energy. Solar panels are frequently used to run the heating system, with excess energy exported back to the grid. Biomass boilers, ground source heat pumps and air source heat pumps are also popular methods of power provision. All of these can be retrofitted, making it straightforward (if pricey) to give any property a green boost. Switching to a renewable energy provider
can also make a huge difference to your home’s carbon footprint. EXCEPTIONAL EFFICIENCY As well as running on renewable energy, eco homes are generally highly energyefficient – those that meet the ‘Passivhaus’ standard can offer up to a 90% saving on energy bills. High levels of insulation, high-performance windows with insulated frames, airtight building fabrics and a mechanical ventilation system with efficient heat recovery are all common features of modern eco houses. Design and location are both important when it comes to energy efficiency – a house with glazing which is orientated south, along with thermal mass to absorb solar heat and features to manage overheating, will be far less costly to run.
rely on locally sourced materials to bring down the project’s carbon footprint. Others use kit homes or pre-fabricated frames for a low-cost but Earth-conscious alternative. There are plenty of options out there, which means you can choose the materials that work for your region and budget. RELYING ON RENEWABLES Most eco homes are powered at least partly by renewable

and double up as fertiliser collectors for the garden. SMART HOMES While some eco homes take a low-tech approach with natural insulation and waste-timber heating, others make full use of modern technology to save energy and cut bills. Smart hot water tanks that only heat the amount of water required, lighting systems that can turn lights off when you leave the room, GREEN LIVING Living walls and green roofs don’t just look attractive – they can purify the air, sequester carbon and help provide a haven for wildlife. In cities, where you’ll increasingly see them adorning high-rise blocks, living walls have been shown to remove air pollutants and even reduce urban temperatures. Many eco homes have a ‘green’ element, whether it’s a sedum-planted roof or a vertical garden.
thermostats that will regulate the temperature in your property based on your daily routine, even blinds that raise and lower by themselves to increase a home’s thermoefficiency – energy-saving technological innovations are constantly evolving. The best bit is that it’s not only new builds that can benefit. There are plenty of ways to cut energy use and reduce the carbon footprint of your existing home, using modern technology to help you out. l
WATER & WASTE While some eco homes are connected to the mains, others use water harvested from a sustainable source. Rainwater harvesting and greywater collection are both innovative ways to minimise impact, but water-saving features can be as simple as low-flow taps, showerheads and water-efficient appliances. Composting toilets are also making their way into many eco homes. Modern composting toilets are odourless, water-saving

If you shivered your way through last winter, it might be time to rethink your home heating options. Replacing a central heating system is a big investment – but there are plenty of ways to ramp up the cosiness factor in your house without a complete overhaul. STOVES WITH STYLE There’s nothing like snuggling up in front of the fire on an icy winter evening. Open fires require constant supervision and they can be tricky to get going - but stoves offer the same cosy feel without the inconvenience. Before you buy, think about whether you want a multi-fuel stove or a model that just burns wood. Multi-fuel stoves contain

If you want to replicate the look and feel of a stove without the same outlay, gas and electric fires are both excellent alternatives. Forget the 1960s stereotype – modern gas and electric fires are both attractive and efficient. Most have a flickering display
ELECTRIC DREAMS The latest additions to the electric scene are inset fires, which can sit in a recess in your wall or chimney opening. They look stunning beneath a TV or incorporated into a bookcase. Thanks to LED technology and handpainted logs, the best models boast a display barely distinguishable from a real fire. There are other options, too, for those who want the look and feel of a woodburning stove with all the advantages of an electric fire. These include electric stove fires, radiant bar electric fires and wall-mounted electric fires, as well as freestanding electric models that resemble open fires.

t’s easy to turn a fireplace from bare to brilliant with the addition of a few choice accessories. From candles and mirrors to vases and perfectlyplaced pictures, custom additions can completely transform the look and feel of a fireplace. The best accessories are functional as well as attractive. If you have
an open fire or a woodburning stove, invest in a stylish screen to protect rugs or carpets from excessive heat and instantly update your room at the same time. With everything from tree sculptures to stained glass screens on offer, it’s a practical way to make a style statement. Fireside tool sets come in an equally diverse range of styles and materials. Antiqued copper, stainless steel, handforged iron – with so many modish options out there, it’s not hard to find something that appeals to your design sense. Similarly, log baskets needn’t be traditional wicker tubs. Minimalist circular racks are increasingly popular, along with copper buckets, crates and inset wall storage. Once you have the
practical elements in place, it’s time to get creative. Intersperse candle lanterns with vases, house plants and pictures on a mantelpiece, use vintage glass bottles and modern ornaments to style shelves either side of a fireplace, or create a super-cosy feel with sheepskin rugs, cushions and candles arranged on the floor beneath the chimney piece. Just a few small design tweaks like these will keep your home feeling comfortable, inviting and stylish all through the colder months. l

HOME TRUTHS THE OWNERS: Will is a farmer, and Amanda an interior decorator who runs a bed and breakfast. They have two sons, Archie and Hamish THEIR HOME: A dairy farmhouse which dates back to the 1400’s ROOMS: Hall, drawing room, dining room, study, kitchen/family dining room, snug office, two downstairs cloak rooms, laundry, boot room, larder, six bedrooms and four bathrooms
S
et in 500 acres of Sussex farmland encircled by the South Downs, an old dairy, home to Amanda and Will Goodman, and their two boys, Archie and Hamish, commands uninterrupted views for 30 to 40 miles. “Living without another house in sight is quite special and being high up is an added bonus,” says Amanda, while watching the polo ponies graze in front of her drawing room windows. It’s hard to believe the original house did not have a ground floor window positioned to savour such spectacular views of the downs. “There is no point in having a view and not being able to enjoy it,” Amanda observes, “but it was just the way the house was orientated. I expect, like Will, who is a farmer, dairymen in those days simply did not have time to sit still to appreciate a view, however lovely.” September 2020 | SUSSEX LIVING 55
An arts and crafts style drawing room was added in the 1930s using flint, brick and leaded windows to match those there already. Finally, when Amanda and Will took over the house and farm from Will’s parents, they began to dream of ways to make it their own. “Inheriting a house from your in-laws is a huge blessing,” says Amanda, “especially this one, because all the original features were so well preserved. Thick oak doors, beams, leaded windows; large inglenooks and bumpy floorboards all contribute to its homely quirkiness. And as my in-laws were such great gardeners, it was like inheriting a mini Wisley Gardens.” Two drawbacks were the lack of downland views, and the very small kitchen, which was frustrating for Amanda, who enjoys cooking for her hungry boys. Once the electrics, plumbing and bathrooms had been upgraded, the couple sat down to discuss ways they could expand to include a much larger new kitchen. To enjoy the best view, they decided on a double height modern barn to be built in natural materials, set at right angles to the existing house. “This was the best position, not just for the views of the Downs, but also to

In the eaves of a house, paint low ceilings and walls in one colour to expand the feeling of space catch the most hours of sun,” explains Amanda. Inside the new barn, they installed a mezzanine floor tucked below the apex of the roof to use as an office. The projected office floor then created space below for a boot room, cloak room and larder, all of which were badly needed. Having done up two small barns to use for Amanda’s bed and breakfast business, the couple had the confidence to undertake what turned out to be their largest most challenging project to date and the most worthwhile. “This space has totally transformed our way of life,” says Amanda, viewing the results. “We all live here together without feeling crowded.” The new extension also gave Amanda a chance to indulge her passion for decorating, using modern colours and fabrics to mingle with family antiques and modern furniture. “I like to introduce modern shapes, even to the more traditional rooms in the older part of the house. Because of its chequered history there were features which I wanted to show off; the old well, once part of the dairy, had to be safely hidden below my laundry floor, but when we knocked two tiny bedrooms into one, we decided to keep the old timberwork

exposed. I rubbed the grainy oak with a wire brush which left a soft limed effect.” Amanda’s style is classically English in an offbeat unpretentious homely way; ancestral portraits hung against pale grey panelled walls, mixed with large capital letters and primitive paintings of dogs and ducks. Her collections range from Indian slippers to Vietnamese fishing pots. Part of her up-cycled experiments include the coffee table in the drawing room and chunky wooden lamp bases, all made from the timber offcuts which would otherwise have been thrown out by the builders when the barn was being built. Not surprisingly her friends, who often ask her for professional advice, fondly nick name her ‘Miss Eagle Eye’, because she is quick to spot

a bargain. Furnishing on a budget inspires rather than restricts Amanda, who has worked out some useful decorating maxims over the years. “I never buy patterned tiles,” she says, “you can tire of them so quickly. For the same reason, I buy timeless textiles, stripes, checks, kelim designs or textured linens and I use sisal rugs rather than pale oak floors.” As selfstyled ‘Mrs Can’t-afford-it- but-caneffect-it’, she finds pretty shapes to paint, so the house is full of colour. Being the only woman in an otherwise masculine household, Amanda enjoys being creative without too much resistance. She can paint the walls of the snug inglenook in blue and green stripes, and her menfolk probably won’t notice, although they are silently grateful for the relaxed colourful ambiance. All her artistic endeavours only serve to increase the charm and homeliness of the farmhouse. “It is an ongoing project,” says her husband Will, knowingly. “What I love about this house,” chips in their older son Archie with a cheeky grin, “We can leave things out and they get tidied away.” l Photos : Robert Sanderson/Narratives Text : Maggie Colvin/Narratives

HAVE YOU GOT THE INSURANCE YOU NEED? “At NFU Mutual Henfield we pride ourselves on taking the necessary time to help make sure we are providing the right level of cover for you to protect your home and contents should the worst happen.” Chets Modi, Agent When did you last walk around your house looking in cupboards to check your contents insurance is adequate? Do you live in a larger, higher-value home, or have a number of expensive items – perhaps jewellery and watches, fine art or collections, or even designer interiors with beautiful curtains and tech. Standard insurance may not be fully protecting you. You may be better protected by an insurance product which enables you to adapt your policy to meet your specific needs – such as agreeing values, increasing cover limits. WHAT IS UNDERINSURANCE? To be ‘underinsured’ means that the amount you’re covered for is less than the cost of rebuilding, replacing, or repairing. For example, if you had a fire at your home, and your ‘sums insured’ is only £30,000, but the actual cost to replace your contents is £100,000 then you’re underinsured and the reality is your policy won’t pay out beyond £30,000, leaving you with a hefty bill. DO YOU KNOW EXACTLY WHAT YOU OWN? Try to take account of the true value of everything you own – both buildings and contents. If you’re unsure of the difference between the two, imagine your house could be lifted off the ground and tipped upside down. Everything that falls out is contents. The rest should be covered by buildings insurance. Also don’t forget about items such as artwork or jewellery that you might have inherited or purchased a long time ago – their value may have changed significantly.
Agent of The National Farmers Union Mutual Insurance Society Limited.
HOW CAN YOU BE CERTAIN EVERYTHING IS COVERED? Not only does Bespoke insurance from NFU Mutual offer many specialist features as standard, but unlike many other insurers who have moved online, the team at NFU Mutual value a real conversation with you to fully understand your needs, enabling them to tailor cover right down to the finest detail. Take time to walk around your house and use the list below as a guide to the contents you need to be insured for. Remember, you should look at how much items are to replace from new as in the event of a claim you can get new for old cover. Exclusions may apply. Living room:

Trees

hen walking, particularly in parkland, certain trees tower above the rest. One species is the Dawn Redwood, Metasequoia Glyptostroboides, many of which rise above 20m (65ft). Living Dawn Redwood trees were discovered and identified in a remote area of central China during the 1940s, having been regarded as extinct for five million years. Seeds were sent to Britain, germinated and planted in Cambridge in 1950, making it 70 years since their introduction to the UK. Dawn Redwoods are fast growing trees reaching 40-50m (130-169ft). The Cambridge saplings were 1.5m (5ft) tall when our Queen came to the throne, 17m (56ft) for the Silver Jubilee in 1977 and nearly 23m (75ft) by the Golden Jubilee celebrations of 2002. In spring the feathery leaves are bright green and in autumn they become a spectacular combination 70 SUSSEX LIVING | September 2020
of red, orange and brown. In winter, when the foliage has dropped, the silhouette of these trees shows as an impressive spire. The bark is rust coloured and noticeable for its shaggy appearance. The species does well near water and has a common name of Water Fir. Conditions in Britain appear to be too cool for cone formation. This species is widely planted in Sussex and the Tree Register of Great Britain records 20 significant specimens in the county. The tallest at 33m (108ft) is near Lower Beeding, along with five other remarkable examples. Others can be found on the Chichester Tree Trail and in town parks such as Horsham, Crawley Memorial Gardens, Hampden Park in Eastbourne and Withdean Park, Brighton. The remainder can be found in private gardens and estates which can be found across the county. l

ome vegetables are far superior when home-grown. Spinach is a prime example. Shop-bought spinach quickly develops a texture resembling limp, soggy dishcloths, whereas freshly-picked leaves are another thing entirely. There are two types of spinach. ‘True’ spinach is a short-lived summer vegetable. ‘Perpetual’ or ‘beet’ spinach lives for a year, is fully hardy, can be sown now and will crop throughout winter. Spinach loves rich, moistureretentive soil. Incorporate leaf mould or compost into the planting area before thinly sowing seeds direct, 2cm deep.
OH SOW SPINACH Thin out seedlings, leaving 30cm spacings between plants. Mature plants will grow 30-40cm high. When harvesting, selectively pick a few of the largest leaves from every plant, leaving the smaller ones to help maintain vigorous growth. As their name suggests, ‘Japanese’ onions were originally developed to withstand harsh winters in Japan. However, it’s not just about temperature. Onions usually require strong sunlight to thrive, but autumnplanting types also cope with low light conditions. Onion and shallot ‘sets’ (small, immature onion bulblets) are

WINEMAKING in Sussex
As harvest approaches, Peter d’Aguilar investigates why the Sussex countryside is becoming prime wineproducing country
T
he English have always been great consumers of wine but, until recently, they’ve not been great wine producers. Today, it’s a very different story – one in which Sussex has played an important role. Thanks to the county’s warm, dry, maritime climate and free-draining soils, Sussex is now home to the largest group of winemakers in Britain. With over 50 vineyards stretching across more than 1,700 acres, Sussex accounts for around a quarter of the UK’s total wine production. Although wine has been produced in Sussex since Roman times, the county’s
vineyards have only begun to make an impression internationally in recent years; winning awards, plaudits and gaining loyal fans across the world – even in France! In particular, Sussex has a growing reputation for producing top quality, traditional-method sparkling wines that are now rated amongst the world’s best. A number of wine producers from Sussex have already won ‘Best Sparkling Wine’ in many international competitions. The county’s many south-facing slopes, chalky soils, long-growing season and similar latitude to the champagne region offer the ideal environment for growing the champagne grape varieties – chardonnay, pinot noir and pinot meunier. The effects of global warming, combined with Sussex’s cool evening sea breezes, allow the

fully-ripened grapes to develop the high levels of natural acidity that are crucial for sparkling wine – ready for harvesting in the autumn. It is estimated that, if climate change continues, then in a couple of decades Sussex has the potential to supplant the champagne region as the world centre of sparkling wine. As well as its outstanding fizz, Sussex also grows a range of grape varieties for still wines. These include many of German origin, such as dornfelder and bacchus, which have a long-established history in the UK, plus more familiar varieties like riesling, pinot blanc and pinot gris, which are becoming more viable for British winemakers due to climate change. Having received protected regional status from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs in 2016, Sussex is the first major wine area in the UK to apply to the European Union for Protected Designation of Origin (PDO). This ensures that only wine produced from local grapes within the county borders can carry the name ‘Sussex wine’ – similar to the French certification system known as ‘appellation controlee’. 2020 has certainly been a challenging year for the wine producers

of Sussex. Due to COVID-19, average revenues are down by roughly a third and cash flow has been a major problem. On top of the lockdown’s negative impact on vineyard tours, cellar door, on-trade and restaurant sales, a freak late frost hit several Sussex wineries in May. Like so many other businesses, the Sussex vineyards have had to adapt and improvise in the face of the virus. However, winemakers are famously resilient and well accustomed to innovation and coping with the vicissitudes of the natural world. During the lockdown and its aftermath, some wine sales have started to move online. Off-trade sales to supermarkets have held up

well. Virtual tastings and video tours have become popular. Onsite cafés are re-opening. Tours of the vineyards are starting to happen again, albeit with appropriate health and safety measures. The Sussex wineries may also benefit
from the increasing post-virus enthusiasm for buying local. In spite of the pandemic, this year’s harvest should go ahead as planned. Vines are well spaced, so pickers can observe social distancing. Due to early flowering, the harvest is likely to happen ahead of schedule. Hopefully, the long hot summer will help to make this year’s vintage one to remember. Despite all the restrictions, the great British public has continued to celebrate the warm weather with a few glasses of English wine. The future for Sussex wine certainly looks rosy, maybe even rosé! l

SPLASHDOWN FROM
LOCKDOWN
Jamie Crow looks back at the changes and challenges over recent months for those who like an ocassional tipple
82 SUSSEX LIVING | September 2020
I
t was a damp, March evening when the announcement came... The pubs were closing. It’s probably fair to say noone quite expected just how long they would be closed for. That statement from Boris Johnson at 5pm on a Friday was a landmark moment; millions of people with weekend plans saw them ground to an abrupt halt. Those key encounters with friends and family, for a few drinks, to relax after a long week, suddenly cancelled. It became obvious as lockdown progressed, that more and more people were longing for social interaction. To sit down with a singular cold pint or glass of wine with a friend on a Sunday afternoon in a beer garden (a key staple of the Sussex culture I’ve found) seemed reminiscent of something from halcyon days gone by. Never say we can’t adapt though, and despite government advice
suggesting social drinkers use the time in lockdown to drink less, many people seemed to find themselves indulging more. Members of my own family were honest in realising their alcohol intake was increasing during the week while shut in at home. The alcohol shelves and chillers at my nearby store in Worthing became more spacious, almost empty, and this pattern was repeated across the county.
A friend of mine who’s a supermarket key worker said to me, “It was reaching a situation where we were having to restock bottles by the hour. At one point it felt as if beer, wine and spirits were becoming essential items equivalent to toilet roll.” One pleasure I did discover was the ability to enjoy different drinks in a sophisticated manner at home. Rather than picking up the weekend six-pack of lager I had grown accustomed to for years, I started dabbling with a range of light and dark spirits. Locally prodcued ales were explored and low-calorie gins of different flavours were enjoyed. Lockdown provided an opportunity to sharpen my cooking skills and I began to enjoy different beverages with different foods. Saturday afternoons involved spiced rum and lime vodka while video calling friends. A homemade Italian meal one evening was raised to another level with the addition of limoncello and ice.
At one point it felt as if beer, wine and spirits were becoming essential items equivalent to toilet roll Once the pubs and restaurants reopened in July, there seems to have been a steady trickle to a new normality. Residents across the county are going out again and supporting their local; be it a seafront bar, a village pub, or a local restaurant. I sincerely hope there continues to be an uplift in their fortunes, because the public house remains at the heart of local communities. It’s a place to make friends, to meet friends, to relax, to celebrate, and to treasure. l

EAST HOATHLY

As summer slowly comes to an end, Robert Veitch headed for the landscape around East Hoathly to enjoy a tree-lined autumnal walk, in the company of his friend Louis

rom the car park walk past East Hoathly Parish Church, along Church Marks Lane to the High Street. Turn left into a “delightfully peaceful, archetypal English village High Street” as Louis observed. At the village sign, continue straight on along Waldron Road for 40m, before turning right into Mill Lane by the old telephone box. Ease uphill, past the tall wall, along the track to four posts preceding the concrete drive. Continue down the footpath opposite for 500m, arriving at a confluence of gates. Turn right, then left, following the path down the slope and into the woods. After skipping through the trees, head across the field towards the decaying tree, then across the second field to a gate, opening onto Ailies Lane. Cross over and, once through the metal gate, follow the shadow in the grass over the brow, down the other side and through another gate. Beyond this gate, follow the slither of earth in the grass, leading round to the right, past the water trough and towards the distant buildings. Once past the metal gate with the ‘WW’ sign by the oak tree, follow the route through Friths Farm, enjoying the last flowering roses of summer. Continue past the pond, following the drive to the pair of white concrete cones at the junction with Highlands Lane. Turn left and walk along the road towards Chiddingly. 30m before the Chiddingly village sign, cross the stile on the right and walk alongside the fence to the stile on the other side of the field. 75m further on, cross the stile and the three-sleeper bridge on the right by the oak tree. Soon after entering the woods, at the four-way fingerpost, head due west, out into the field. The path gradually bears right, then gradually left, following the perimeter into a second, then third field, before striking out diagonally towards the telegraph poles. After joining the concrete path, turn right and continue to the junction with Whitesmith Lane.
Beech branches draped in the first sunglow yellow and amber hues of autumn
Cross over and walk down the footpath opposite, alongside the post and rail fence, to the junction with the A22. This is a busy road so, with great care, cross to the driveway opposite and slightly to the right. Walk up the drive, keeping left of the fence, continuing to a hurdle with a swiveling top rail. Beyond the hurdle continue west, into Upper Vert Wood, through tall coniferous trees to three square posts in the path. Continue for another 300m, then across a small bridge to the junction with Vert Lane. Turn right and amble along the unmade road for half a mile; enjoy the peace, solitude, birdsong and rich variety of woodland that Louis was enthralled by. Cross over at the junction with Park Lane, and continue inside the arboreal tunnel for another mile, eventually emerging at the five-way crossroads at Laughton Common. Turn sharp right, onto the concrete driveway of Park Farm. Walk northeast, beneath beech branches draped in the first sunglow yellow and amber hues of autumn. After half a mile there’s an avenue of weeping willows, and beyond this the concrete peters out, evolving into a wide grassy avenue. It gradually narrows over the next half mile, emerging into a field. Bear left, then right and uphill alongside the ripening maize to the

drive ahead. Ease left and head along the drive, passing through the small gate on the corner by the lamppost where the drive turns sharp left. Across the paddock and through another gate, head downhill across the field to another gate, then stile, and steps to the A22. Cross with great care for the traffic flies by like the British Grand Prix. Through the woods opposite, a gate opens onto the dam of Decoy Pond. Once across the dam and over the stile beyond, bear right across the field, over another stile and through the allotments. Follow the path along the periphery of Moat Wood. As ground becomes gravel, then tarmac, civilisation reappears in the form of the church. Louis opted for a pint in a local pub to celebrate, but rewards are a personal choice! l Robert has tested the route personally, making sure it is suitable for walking. MAKING UP WITH
COLOUR COSMETICS Lisa de Silva looks at the coming season’s makeup trends to enhance your features
W
hile the ‘Covid-era’ has hit beauty salons hard, sales of colour cosmetics have soared as lockdown gives us more time to experiment with different looks. Here we checkout this season’s latest makeup trends. EYE POWER With face masks now ‘de rigueur’ while out and about, our eyes will need to do all of the talking and the current trend is for bold colour, lush lashes and strong brows. This is the ideal time to test new eye makeup, practise skills you normally wouldn’t have time for and try out a range of new looks. Autumn’s biggest trend is for coloured eyeliner – the brighter the better – which can add a pop of colour without being too overbearing. Try bright blues, pinks, greens and oranges, while white eyeliner will both enlarge and brighten your eyes. Experiment by lining the eye in the same colour or using a lighter

shade on top or even a contrasting colour to really make an impact. Try thinking of eye colour as an accessory, able to provide a flash of brightness to complement a neutral outfit (or mask). In terms of texture, this season’s trend is for glossy eyeshadows – add a few pearls of gloss just above your lash line and blend to create the same striking effect as a smoky eye but in half the time. For those not quite ready to give up their smoky eye, try swapping blacks and greys for deep greens, rich purples or royal blues. For those happy to step into the limelight, adding studs, crystals or even creating animal prints above your lash line will definitely turn heads. LASHES & BROWS The adventurous can also make a statement with neon-coloured mascara and playful lashes. This season the trend is for the theatrical and extreme,
Strong and structured brows provide the perfect frame for eye makeup
with false lashes embellished with feathers, metallic strips and even flowers. For those looking for more of an understated look, choose a mascara for volume, thickness, length or definition. Add impact by using a lashpumping primer underneath and an eyelash curler to maximise the effects of the mascara. Strong and structured brows provide the perfect frame for eye makeup. To keep yours in place, invest in either a clear or coloured brow gel for a polished finish.
LUSH LIPS While lipstick and mask-wearing are not a great combination there will still be times when you want your lips to shine. Nudes and barely there lip stains are both easy to wear and low maintenance. What’s more, they will balance and not compete with this season’s bold eye makeup. For those preferring a more understated eye colour, a strong lip looks fabulous. Dark berry, bright pink and terracotta shades in a glossy finish are current favourites. l

How can I stop my gums bleeding? The Cause
The primary cause of gum disease is plaque. This starts off as a fine film of live bacteria that grows constantly on the tooth, root, and gum surfaces. If it is not completely removed each day it calcifies to a hardened material called calculus or tartar. This cannot be removed just with a toothbrush or floss and requires professional removal in the surgery. Plaque forms constantly in our mouths, initially in a protein layer deposited from our saliva, and it is thus unrealistic to attempt to make a mouth plaque free. The priority is to reduce the volume of plaque in your mouth to a level at which it is theoretically harmless and thus bring the disease under control.
The Solution
At Oakmead Dental Care our team of hygienists aim not only to achieve a healthy status in your mouth, but to also involve and give you the essential knowledge to help you keep it that way.
‘Tell me and I forget, show me and I remember, involve me and I learn”

“I am so pleased with the way Debbie has helped to stop my gums bleeding. I am so happy to have found such a caring and thorough hygienist and I would highly recommend her. I do struggle keeping up with dental hygiene and have found some hygienists to be very patronising. However, with Debbie I didn’t feel discouraged at all – quite the opposite!”

BEAUTY SHINY METALLICS For statement dressing and special events, metallics will not let you down. hile the fashion industry has been dealt a massive blow by the coronavirus pandemic, it’s not a knockout punch. One of the key ways to express our identity and individuality, our love affair with all things fashion is set to continue, albeit with a more considered mindset. Here we identify the main colour trends for Autumn 2020 and suggest how to integrate them into your wardrobe for maximum impact and style.
Bold jewel tones such as ruby, sapphire, emerald and amethyst will turn heads and get you noticed SINGING THE BLUES With classic blue crowned the colour of the year for 2020, expect to see this versatile colour everywhere, along with a range of shades from innocent and youthful

HUES & STYLE belted and oversized, the black coat was shown in a range of tactile fabrics, including neoprene, leather and vinyl. Also look out for the redesigned little black dress, given a formfitting 90s twist with square necklines and cut-out detailing to reveal a glimpse of bare flesh.
DEEP JEWEL TONES To add a touch of luxe, sophistication and brightness to the season, bold jewel tones such as ruby, sapphire, emerald 92 SUSSEX LIVING | September 2020
and amethyst will turn heads and get you noticed. Pick one colour and use different shades to colour block your outfit – matching tights will ensure you stand out. Jewel-coloured leather separates and outerwear exudes serious style and glamour, working well with the strong and structured contours striding down the catwalks. These colours also work well in velvet, adding a touch of depth and mystery to an outfit. TOFFEES AND COFFEES Whether you enjoy a latte, cappuccino or espresso, dark toffees or caramels, be prepared for every shade of brown as the classic camel gets an update. Wear as a neutral for a cosy, warm and cheering vibe during the cold winter months. Marries well with oversized knitwear, sweater dresses and chic capes.
powder blue, through to deep, dramatic and romantic navy. Whatever your skin tone there is a shade of blue for you. From sober to bright, this dependable colour reflects a classy and stylish selfassurance, whether worn as evening wear, outerwear or separates. NATURAL OFF-WHITE Feeding into the sustainable and recycled trend, fashion-forward disciples will be trading in pure white for off-white this season. As a soft, warm shade, this works well for ruffled blouses and folksy billowing dresses. l
WELLBEING
DEVELOPING & STRENGTHENING Lisa de Silva offers her advice on social wellbeing at a time when friendships and family are more important than ever
T
he value of friendship can never be underestimated. We all need someone to laugh and cry with, share our deepest fears and secrets with and celebrate life’s big moments with. Friendships are the bedrock of a healthy and robust sense of wellbeing, and interacting with others can boost our physical, mental and emotional health as we bond over shared experiences and laughter. Sadly, the global events of 2020 and the need for social distancing left many of us feeling lonely and isolated, especially those shielding or working from home. Naturally we miss our families, friends and colleagues, but it’s important to find new ways to connect, as a strong social network is one of the best ways of coping with these challenging times. To help you to maintain and even develop new friendships, we’ve put together some ideas to inspire you. MAINTAINING FRIENDSHIPS All friendships benefit from shared experiences and activities, and it’s worth investing time staying in regular
It’s important to find new ways to connect contact with friends via video calls, messaging and regular phone calls. For friends you haven’t seen for a while, sending a letter or postcard can be a lovely way to reconnect. If you enjoy regular activities with your friends, try to maintain them online by watching a film at the same time while video calling, enjoying a virtual coffee or meal together, playing games and taking part in quizzes, or setting up an online book club. For those no longer shielding, there is also the option to meet for a socially distanced walk, coffee or meal out. MAKING NEW FRIENDS & CONNECTIONS Making new friends can also help to overcome feelings of loneliness and while it’s not easy during these difficult times, it’s also not impossible. Start slowly and do not put added pressure on yourself. Remember that the main
94 SUSSEX LIVING | September 2020
objective is to find a way of increasing your social activity which is enjoyable. A good way to achieve this is to focus on an interest that motivates you and join an online group or course. Ideas for this include joining an online choir, language, arts and crafts, cookery, DIY or gardening class. If there is no forum for discussions with your classmates, set up a WhatsApp group so you can begin to get to know each other better. You can also volunteer to help and support others by joining a befriending scheme and becoming a phone buddy, fundraising for a local charity, offering to help a vulnerable neighbour and using any skills you have such as dog walking, baking or gardening to help those in your wider community. Most importantly, do remember that this situation will pass and do make plans for the future, with plenty of sociable activities to look forward to. l

By this I don’t mean they’ve been on the receiving end of an emotional epiphany, just that ‘Junior Him’ has purchased his first flat after years of renting. Now, as a first-time buyer with a mortgage agreed in principle prior to reservation of the new-build property, ‘Them Indoors’ thought the process might be relatively simple. However, this was not to be. It is 15 years since they last moved themselves, an experience notable for the 18 months and 50 odd viewings it took to get a buyer, and the breakdown of the removal lorry on the big day resulting in the whole journey taking place in first and second gear. Still, it’s heartening to know that in the intervening time, nothing has really improved, and moving is still up there with serious illness, death and divorce as one of life’s big stressful events. As a dog, my experience of relocating is somewhat limited. When my previous owner was taken into hospital for the final time, and

I feel sure some of our tax reliefs will find their days numbered. I welcome the inquiry: it’s about time the tax system has a spring clean, and we do need to be ready for challenging times ahead. However, it is important we recognise that taxation is a big part of our society and, just like our reaction to COVID-19, the system needs to let the public take responsibility, and it needs to be fair and easy to understand. I look forward to the results. l

OPINION
IF YOU
ask me...
IF YOU RECKON YOU’RE IN CONTROL OF YOUR DOMESTIC APPLIANCES, PERHAPS YOU SHOULD THINK AGAIN, WRITES FLO WHITAKER
It’s been one of those weeks. On Monday, the computer fan died. On Tuesday, the vacuum cleaner joined in. On Thursday, the shower broke – while I was in it, naturally. Oh, and the washing machine is (literally) on the blink. The miniature lights on its control panel are randomly blinking in bewildered fashion – it looks like a disco for tiny fairy folk. I wonder what it’s thinking about? It certainly hasn’t got its mind on the laundry. Electrical appliances have always conspired to make my life miserable. The toaster really hates me and I’m convinced there’s a poltergeist living in it. As I approach, it whispers to the microwave, “Here she comes …” My husband, an “utterly rational” engineer (his words – not mine) thought I was exaggerating, until the day he observed the wretched thing score a direct hit on the back of my head as it flung out the toast with alarming velocity. “Now do you believe me – it even waited until I turned my back!” I bellowed. He’s not a man easily put off his breakfast, so merely said he’d have cereal instead, but I could tell he was momentarily rattled. And another thing; why do you have to buy a whole new device when you only need a spare part? Aren’t we supposed to be saving the planet? I’d better go and check the most important appliances in this household – kettles. I’ve got four of ’em, “just in case”, but I’m not paranoid…
We are a small team of UKs leading inhome pet end-of-life specialists in Sussex. Say goodbye to your beloved pet in your arms at home with our gentle two-step euthanasia - safe & loving for everyone.
“I cannot Express just how much our dog meant, he was my shadow, my companion, my best friend. You gave us the chance to spend time with him in his own comfortable surroundings. His brother was there to sniff goodbye too. He had been ill for so long and Dr Jo came out to see him. All this was at the beginning of the pandemic so it was iffy times. But we couldn’t have asked for a better service. Peace, compassion, respect and time. Bless you all for your compassion to animals and the people who love them xx”. JOANNA 5I
