Autumn in all its glory is just around the corner. If you’re in Mid Sussex, there’s only one way to celebrate the season and all that’s good about our countryside: the Autumn Show & Game Fair at Ardingly. We took a sneak peek behind the scenes for you (p.7-12). And while we’re on the subject of game, I’d like to welcome our new food writer, Robert Hanson, who starts off his ‘Food Glorious Food’ column (p.60) in true autumn style – by roasting a partridge! Another fixture on the Mid Sussex September social calendar is the Hurst Festival – two great weeks of art, music and entertainment for the whole community, now under the chairmanship of Colin Matthews (p63). We also caught up with what must surely be the youngest ever exhibitor at Hurstpierpoint Open Studios: Ben Driver, aged 8 (p.64-65) Riding for the Disabled (RDA) is a wonderful charity that provides therapy, achievement and enjoyment to people with disabilities all over the UK. There’s a group right here in Mid Sussex, and they kindly invited us to see for ourselves how the bond between rider and horse can have transformative results (p35-37). If you thought nothing much ever happens in Fulking, you’d be wrong. When we learnt that John Ruskin, the

famous Victorian social thinker, had a hand in bringing water to this small village at the foot of the Downs, we just had to find out more (p19-21). Our September wedding feature includes a useful wedding planner as well as lots of ideas from local suppliers to make your day extra special (p.48-57). There’s also an education feature this month, a walk through Bedelands Nature Reserve, as well as our regular sections on home & garden, health & beauty, food & drink, local living and our popular monthly diary dates. Oh, and one tiny last thing: Sussex Living has reached a bit of a milestone this month: September 2013 marks our 100th issue! Feel free to pop open a bottle of fizz on our behalf, if the fancy takes you. We’re celebrating with a little showcase of our favourite front covers through the years, on page 89. Do take a look.

Celebrate the

Sussex countryside at autumn time

Have you ever tried your hand at fly casting or clay pigeon shooting, watched a ‘gundog scurry’ or enjoyed a ‘Lamb national’? if not, it’s time to spend the first weekend in October getting involved in all that the Sussex countryside has to offer: the Autumn Show & game Fair.

The Autumn Show & Game Fair at the South of England Showground in Ardingly will be packed full of interesting rural pursuits across Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th October, many of which will offer opportunities for all ages to ‘have a go’ for themselves. Michelle Nudds, Vice Chairman of the Autumn Show & Game Fair Committee, explained to me the basics of the gundog scurry, which is “a timed competition aimed at finding the dog who can retrieve a dummy in the fastest time” and is open to any gundog breed or recognised crossbreed. Dogs are so much a part of the country scene that the show organisers have made sure there are numerous ways a pooch can steal the limelight.

Terrier racing is open to any terrier-type dog that can chase a lure, and the hugely popular Mid Downs Dog Agility competition is always a delight to watch. There is also a ‘have a go’ agility competition open to the general public - so if your dog is skilled enough to tear around obstacles, over fences and through tunnels, now may be his turn to shine. James Whiteman will be bringing his lurchers and terriers, along with his extensive knowledge of training methods and his inspirational connection to rural life. People can enter working terriers and lurchers on the day to show their prowess and conformation and there will even be a class for Best Puppy. continued on next page

Kent and Surrey Bloodhounds will be giving an energetic display on Saturday while a stirring cavalcade of hounds will be parading on Sunday. If you’re wondering about the ‘Lamb National’, allow Bob Hogg, a familiar face at the showground with geese and duck herding, to demonstrate his Herdwick sheep, which have a natural ability to jump, as they sail over obstacles like miniature showjumpers. Having grown up in the Lake District where Herdwicks were part of the landscape, this is an event I’ll be sure not to miss. The Donkey Show will be a popular crowd puller

on Sunday as these loveable animals who gave many of us our first childhood ride on the beach, will be presented with rosettes and heaped with strokes and pats from children and grown-ups alike. Children will love the chance to get close to a variety of farm animals in the Abergavenny building and challenge themselves on the Pumpkin Trail, a quiz that takes in the breadth of the show, encouraging youngsters to notice details within displays and engage them with everything on offer. opportunity to meet a qualified instructor and try your hand at fly fishing. The Salmon and Trout Association will be teaching this effective and skilled casting technique in a small purpose-built pond. If flight is more appealing than fishing, there will be a chance to get close to magnificent birds of prey, with a falconry display by Huxley’s Birds of Prey from Horsham. Visitors can see the birds literally eye to eye in a static display of owls, falcons and eagles, and children may be invited to assist during a flying display. If you prefer your birds to be edible, visit the game-cooking demonstrations, where you can discover a tasty alternative to the Sunday roast chicken. A vast array of poultry will be on display, showing the versatility and potential of local and national breeds. Children seem particularly fascinated by the sheer variety of poultry, understandable when many will only have an image of a ‘chicken’ they may have seen on TV or in a storybook. The Show is designed to appeal as much to urban dwellers as their rural counterparts; not only is it an opportunity to learn about what goes on in the countryside, but a chance to get involved in some completely new activities. Triple Commonwealth Gold Medallist Charlotte Kerwood and her father Dan will be bringing their clay pigeon shoot to the Show, where total beginners can have instruction in this challenging and enjoyable pursuit. Enthusiasts can enter High Gun competitions and a Team Shoot Challenge, gaining tips direct from the top

If it’s traditional entertainment that appeals to you, Punch & Judy will be bossing their inimitable way across the stage, and Mike Hayes will be bringing his steel band to perform during the day. Harris Brothers, one of the best loved vintage original fairgrounds in Sussex, will be bringing thrill and flavour with their magnificent painted gallopers and rides that never fail to delight people of all ages. Foodies will be spoilt for choice. In case all this activity has diverted you from the main purpose of the harvest festival, which is to be grateful for this important time of plenty, the Reverend John Crutchley of Ardingly Parish Church will be taking a Harvest Festival Service on Sunday morning. Whether you’re a confirmed urbanite or a recent or life-long country dweller, there will be much on offer to fascinate and engage you at every level. Harvest season is a wonderful time of year. But how to best store your produce?

Blooming Times

The season of Harvest Home was a busy time for our ancestors, as they rushed to preserve as much food as possible before winter set in. Nowadays, supermarkets provide everything all year round. For most of us, the imperative to harvest no longer exists, but there is much pleasure to be had from not just growing your own, but storing the surplus, too. The aroma from a jar of homemade strawberry jam, opened on a dark January day, cannot be beaten, providing food for both body and soul. The essential requirements for storing produce are: a dry, cool, dark, frost-free and rodent-proof environment. Root crops can be stored in wood or cardboard stackable trays, or sacks made from paper, hessian or netting. Specialist companies sell all manner of storage equipment, but these items can often be obtained for free from market stalls and agricultural feed merchants. On no account use plastic bags, as condensation will soon build up, causing rot. Damaged crops will quickly spoil the rest, so only store produce in perfect condition. Freshly dug potatoes need a few hours drying in the open air to ‘set’ their soft skins before storage. Onions should be dried off for a fortnight before storing; use upturned crates to keep them off the ground. Onions are the exception to the storage rule; requiring a cool, well-lit space, as storing them in the dark encourages sprouting.

Essential requirements for storing produce: a dry , cool, dark , frost-free and rodentproof enviroment.

16

SuSSex Living September 2013

Pumpkins have a high moisture content. To prevent rot, their skins should be hard and free from damage. Harvest them on long stems of 10cm or more. As the stem dries and shrivels, any bacteria on the cut stem will die off before they can infect the interior. Blanching runner beans is a miserable job; I simply put pre-sliced beans directly into bags and they freeze perfectly well, although they are best eaten within a few months. Apples and pears were traditionally stored in newspaper – it’s thought the arsenic in old newsprint helped preserve them! Store them on racks or in boxes with a good air space between each fruit. Check regularly and remove any that are suspect. Plastic boxes are ideal for freezing delicate fruit. Conveniently, an empty 1 litre ice cream container holds 1 lb of soft fruit – useful to know when jam making! Labelling produce for the freezer seems laborious at the time, but an informative label, noting contents, date and weight is essential for avoiding an encounter with a UFO, (Unidentified Frozen Object). A pencil is best for writing freezer labels. Marker pens and ballpoints quickly fade, but graphite stays legible for years – use a pencil and you’ll never sit down to apple pie and gravy again! www.sussexliving.com

What can the pretty downland village of Fulking and the famous victorian social thinker and art critic John Ruskin possibly have in common? in a word: water.

When

water came to

Fulking

If you’ve ever walked along the South Downs or visited Devils Dyke just outside Brighton, chances are that you have admired the breathtaking view that looks down on the picturesque village of Fulking, curved around the base of the gentle slopes. Venture down into the village and you may notice a water fountain and spring, both close to one another and bearing tiled inscriptions. Their story is one of collaboration between two Victorian men, united by their interest in the harnessing of rainwater. John Ruskin was a true polymath and one of the most influential voices of the Victorian age. His extraordinary range of interests and achievements ranged form art to nature and the environment, literature, education, politics and economics, and many more besides. But it was his skills as a civil engineer that he decided to focus on this small downland village. Ruskin was born in 1819 and although not a resident of Sussex, he did spend time in Fulking, staying at The Old Bakehouse next door to the Shepherd and Dog pub. Accounts of him ‘enjoying the sunsets’ are unlikely to be all that drew him to Fulking; he knew people in the village. A friend in nearby Brighton, Henry Willett, was the founding father of Brighton Museum and endorsed many of Ruskin’s theories on the potential gathering of water for domestic use. In Ruskin’s day, the water supply in Fulking was totally reliant on a stream that flowed past the Shepherd and Dog; the only other alternative was for villagers to dig wells in their own gardens, several of which still exist. Friends in the village felt certain that Ruskin could help them secure a better water supply and asked him directly for his input. Together with Willett, Ruskin designed a water distribution system for the village using stream water to supply four reservoirs. The main component of their scheme was a hydraulic ram pump, invented by Joseph Michel Montgolfier in 1796, versions of which are still in use today; its main advantage was that it required continued on next page

no energy source beyond the existing water flow. The principal of the ram pump was that it used the force of water to propel a smaller percentage of water to a higher level. Two of the four reservoirs were situated under hand pumps in The Street, another for the drinking fountain by the entrance to North Town Field and another at Perching Manor. The overflow supplied Perching Farm and cottage. There is an inscription on the pump house, which reads: HE SENDETH SPRINGS INTO THE VALLEYS WHICH RUN AMON THE HILLS OH THAT MEN WOULD PRAISE THE LORD FOR HIS GOODNESS The text is an interpretation from Psalm 104 Verse 10 and gives no reference to either Ruskin or Willett. The inscription on the fountain a hundred yards further up the hill, however, paints a picture of gratitude at Ruskin’s feat of engineering: TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN HONOUR OF JOHN RUSKIN Psalm LXXVIII That they might set their hope in God and not forget but keep his Commandments Who brought Streams also out of the Rock.

Willett had composed the inscription and Ruskin was apparently embarrassed by the reference to himself. He wrote to Willett “I am grieved by your inscription on the fountain, for it made my name far too conspicuous, nor did I feel the slightest honour was owing to me in this matter.” This letter reveals a humility that seems slightly at odds with the exuberant gothic style of the fountain. Perhaps Willett was responsible for the outer appearance of the structure, for he had a vast collection of pottery depicting British popular history, now housed at Brighton Museum, which shows his taste for the elaborate over the utilitarian. The decoration and visibility of the fountain and pump house reflected a celebration of the role that a reliable water supply had played in the development of Fulking. The biblical overtones spoke to the poorer inhabitants, uplifting them with beauty while providing practical help. In a manner typical of affluent Victorian philanthropists, the words encouraged villagers to be grateful to God and those who made their lives of toil slightly easier by earthly means. An article in the Pall Mall Gazette in 1891 refers to the good value of the enterprise: “...the works... did not cost very much and they certainly do not disfigure the locality.” Such regard for the landscape and the sustainability of a free water supply seem more in keeping with our own times rather than the headstrong drive for expansion that we normally associate with Victorian engineers. The villagers continued to maintain the system and the last person known to have been involved in its upkeep was Charlie Franks, a local builder and lifelong Fulking resident. It was not until 1951 that a water supply was installed by the Burgess Hill Water

In 1951, a water supply was installed from a pumping station at Poynings, making Ruskin and Willett’s works redundant after 60 years Company from a pumping station at Poynings, making Ruskin and Willett’s works finally redundant after 60 years of use. The fountain fell into a state of disrepair for some years until a comprehensive renovation in 1995 restored it to its former glory; fresh stone cappings now top the brickwork and new brown tiles were commissioned. Walking up the slope of Fulking Escarpment behind the village, it’s easy to understand what drew Ruskin to the village. His city upbringing must have given him a keen appreciation for such a quiet but industrious village. Perhaps his motivation for bringing water to the villagers was simple gratitude for the beauty he found here and the friendships he made in this unspoiled corner of Sussex.

if you feel you might have a hearing problem, ask your gP to refer you to Action for Deafness.

Action for Deafness: bigger & better!

Wednesday 31st July was a big day for Action For Deafness: Professor Sue Hill OBE, Chief Scientific Officer NHS England, officially opened its new headquarters on Sussex Road, Haywards Heath. Although the charity has moved only a few hundred yards from its old premises, the new facility with large Resource Centre, equipment demonstration room, high tech conference room, and customdesigned and built audiology suites seems to have moved it forward into a completely different world. The large car park is an added bonus. I was given a tour of the premises by Jane Shaw, the charity’s dynamic Chief Executive Officer whose vision and energy have driven the project forward. “Everything we do is inspired by our passion to enable and empower those with hearing difficulties and those closest to them,” she explained. Action for Deafness’ keen understanding of the issues faced by Deaf and hard of hearing people is key to its success. “People come to us for NHS hearing assessments after they’ve been referred by their GP and we can offer a

first appointment very quickly,” Jane explained. “The team then takes the client through the three steps of Assessment, hearing aid Fitting and Follow Up, but we like to add an extra step by inviting them back for communications tactics training, which is specially designed to help the client adjust to life with a hearing loss. As well as supplying audiology services on behalf of the NHS, Action For Deafness also provides a wide range of the very latest Assistive Listening Devices, all of which can be purchased at the centre or online. Action for Deafness also offers courses in Communication Tactics, Lip Reading and Sign Language.

In addition to the Haywards Heath centre, there are other centres in Crawley, East Grinstead, Handcross, Steyning and Worthing. All the centres welcome volunteer help, even if you can only offer a few hours a week.

LOCAL Heart of Sussex Sponsored Horse Ride This year the British Heart Foundation will again be holding their very popular sponsored ride at St Helena Farm in Plumpton Green. The date is Sunday 8th September and the course will be 10 miles, over beautiful Sussex countryside, with optional crosscountry jumps and suitable for all levels of rider and horse or pony. New this year is the leading rein course for younger riders, and a dog-walk course, which is ideal for those waiting for a rider to complete the main course. All riders, horses and dogs are invited to wear something red on the day! Last year over 100 horses took part, coming from all over Sussex on a blisteringly hot day, riding through woodland and across open farmland, with stunning views of the South Downs, raising around £3,500 to help fund vital research into heart disease. This year let’s hope the weather will be as kind and even more can be raised for this vital cause. The first concert of the coming season in November is entitled “Mostly Brahms” and includes an impressive piano accompaniment by Brahms himself of the Brahms Requiem. An afternoon Family Christmas Concert will be held in December at The King’s Church, Burgess Hill. In April there will be the first performance of a new English translation and edition by Neil Jenkins of Handel’s The Passion of Christ (Brockes Passion) followed in May by Mendelssohn’s St Paul. Our Musical Director, Neil Jenkins, has an international reputation as a tenor soloist. His expertise and enthusiasm have resulted in some memorable performances from the choir, which has been described as having “a high level of musicality”. New members, especially in the soprano and bass parts, are assured of a very warm welcome at any rehearsal. Rehearsals take place from 7.30 pm on Monday evenings at St Paul’s Catholic College, Burgess Hill. For further details please visit www.sussexchorus.org or contact the Hon. Fulking Book Nook The Chapel in The Street, Fulking, in front of the Village Hall, has been transformed into a Book Nook. This charming place now has a wide variety of books, CDs, DVDs and toys, which can be yours for a small donation. It is run by volunteers and is open on Wednesdays 10-11.30am and Saturdays 10.30am-2.30pm. We also welcome saleable books that you no longer need. Come and see us and while away a little time in this tranquil space in the heart of a downland village. All proceeds to St Andrew’s church, Edburton. Everyone at St Andrew’s church are very grateful to Anthony Brooks, who gave us £3,800 from the proceeds of his book entitled ‘The changing times of Fulking and Edburton 1900 to 2007’. We have now used the money to enlarge the area of paving in front of the porch. This is now a lovely open space where wedding photos can be taken

or the congregation can gather before and after services. We have used the remainder of the money to install an air curtain above the main door inside the church. This will help in the colder weather to warm the congregation as they enter the church. We would all like to thank Tony for his very generous donation.

Albourne Village Show The Albourne Village Show has been described as “reminiscent of childhood village fetes” – there’s a flower show, baking competitions, homemade jams and wines, apple pressing, crafts, tombolas, children’s games. It is becoming one of the most popular village shows of the year, with over 400 people attending last year. Pay us a visit on Saturday 7th September, 1-4.30pm and see what you think! This year, we are expecting even more magnificent vintage vehicles to steam into the village – from a giant steamroller to small working engines. Vintage vehicles will also be on display, so come and take a close look at them all and talk to their owners. Our very popular Fun Dog Show will be taking place throughout the afternoon, including classes for all shapes and sizes of dog. Come along with your pooch to take part and see if you can take home one of the many rosettes to be won. Children are well catered for with the fantastic array of games in the tent dedicated to them.

Come and watch apples being scratted (crushed) in the “shark” and then pressed in our new hydraulic press. You are welcome to bring your own apples to the show and, for a small fee, they will be turned into juice for you to take home, or you can donate any unwanted apples to be pressed and sold to help raise funds for future shows. Light Up Hassocks As children return for a new school term, the thoughts of the Light Up Hassocks committee are firmly turned towards this year’s switch-on evening on Friday 29 November. Watch this space for further details of that very special event. But, in order to make sure that there are some lights to turn on, we’re busy fundraising. Our next event will be a curry and quiz night at The Hassocks, Station Approach East on Friday 4th October at 7.30 p.m. for 8.00 p.m. Bring a team of up to eight people, or you can join with

others on the night. Join us for good food, good company and good quizzing. Tickets at £10, including a meat or vegetarian curry with rice, are available from Orion News. Our 2014 calendar, this year featuring some lovely vintage photos of Hassocks landmarks, will be on sale at the quiz for just £5. Buy early to post to any friends abroad who may have Hassocks connections! This year we will also be running a Grand Prize Draw, with a range of prizes including a first prize of a year’s membership to Freedom Leisure’s facilities at Downlands Community College. Look out for tickets at Freedom Leisure Hassocks and elsewhere. Please buy some if you can. We have to raise £5,000 in order to light up our village and every £1

from the community really does count.

editorial@sussexliving.com Wilmington Close in Hassocks turned out in force on Saturday 27th July to celebrate 50 years of their street’s existence. It was Party Central on “the banjo” – the elliptical area of communal ground in front of numbers 10 to 24 – with a gazebo, music, children’s games, and plenty of celebratory food and drink. Residents old and new joined in the party, reminiscing about half a century of Wilmington Close. There were plenty of anecdotes for the neighbours too – from a builder falling to his death during construction to allnight spa parties in the late 1960s. There was even a 50th wedding anniversary being celebrated the very same day! One elderly resident revealed that she and her husband had bought their house in 1962, just from looking at the plans. She also had tales of the Orion Cinema in Orion Parade (now Budgens) and a shop in the High

Street, run by a lady called Mary, that sold absolutely anything. It also transpired that Wilmington Close has challenged the laws of probability, with three physicists choosing to live within close proximity of each other. The land was previously owned by market gardener William Balchin, who ran a commercial nursery on the site. It later became part of the Edwardian Orchard Pleasure Gardens, which was closed in 1935 to make way for the Hassocks Homes Estate, which included Grand Avenue and the Close. Plans were given the go-ahead in 1962 to build 47 three and four-bedroomed homes, with the first residents moving into Wilmington Close in January 1963.

LOCAL stone as part of next year’s centenary commemoration of the 1914-18 war. Private Sidney Godley VC, who is already remembered with a blue plaque on the wall of East Court Mansion, was the first private soldier to be awarded the medal for valour in WWI. Despite being twice wounded, he held a bridge under heavy fire, allowing his comrades to escape, and was subsequently captured. He was told of his award while still a POW. and eventually received it from King George V at Buckingham Palace in 1919. Town Clerk Julie Holden said: “We are thrilled that the national commemorations are to honour the most valiant from the First World War by commissioning the paving stones. Pte Godley was born in East Grinstead and while the family has long since moved away he remains part of the town’s history, and this recognition in his birthplace will, I hope, be seen as fitting.”

Green Flag for Beech Hurst Gardens Beech Hurst Gardens, which is maintained by Mid Sussex District Council, has been recognised as among the best in the country, scooping the prestigious Green Flag Award for a 7th consecutive year. Councillor Pru Moore, Mid Sussex District Council Cabinet Member for Leisure and Sustainability, hosted a picnic to toast the park’s on-going success. She was joined by representatives from the MSDC landscapes team, Beech Hurst Gardens Petanque and Bowls Clubs, the Haywards Heath Society, maintenance contractor Grasstex, Beech Hurst Railway and Councillor Sandy Ellis, Mayor of Haywards Heath. The Green Flag Award is the national standard for parks

and green spaces in England and Wales, highlighting sites which are free to use and open to everyone. To gain the award, parks and public spaces have to meet a range of criteria including providing a welcoming, healthy, safe and secure environment, as well as be clean and well maintained and involve the local community. With beautiful views of the South Downs and spectacular flora and fauna, Beech Hurst Gardens is a firm favourite for locals and visitors to the area alike. Towards the western edge of Haywards Heath, the six-hectare garden also hosts some top-notch community and sports facilities, including lawn green bowling, petanque, a children’s play area and a miniature railway. “We are proud that Beech Hurst Gardens continues to be recognised and maintained at this high level. The Green Flag Award

proves that Beech Hurst Gardens is among the best examples of public parks or open space in the country,” said Councillor Pru Moore, Cabinet Member for Leisure and Sustainability. “I would urge people to visit and enjoy this green jewel in the crown of Haywards Heath.” The retention of Green Flag status has been particularly welcomed by the local friends group. The Group meets in order that members can meet others who share a passion for gardens, learn new skills and enjoy some physical activity – and there are also many organisational or publicity tasks if physical work is not appropriate. If you are interested in joining the Friends of Beech Hurst Gardens or joining another outdoor Group across the District, please contact MSDC Landscapes Contract Manager David Terry at david.terry@midsussex.gov.uk or on 01444 477439.

Choosing how to say P & S gallagher’s and personal aproach offers you real choices in marking the occasion of the passing of a loved one.

compassionate

Imagine looking down at your own funeral: the faces of your loved ones, the music being played, the words spoken, the flowers chosen to complement your service and the choice of your final resting place. Perhaps the most surprising word here is choice. Funerals, like death, are something we’d rather not think about, and our own funeral is perhaps one event we may feel we have no choice in deciding. I went to meet Matthew Gallagher, whose family have been funeral directors in Mid Sussex since 1978, to find out the steps involved in planning for a funeral. Matthew explained that “a funeral can be to say goodbye, to mourn, to reflect or simply to celebrate a person’s life. My role is to work with local people to give them exactly what they want.” Unlike larger companies, the Gallagher family business has no shareholders to please and they’ve always played an important role in the local community, employing local residents and visiting people in their own homes. As staff are not paid on commission, they’re able to offer entirely impartial advice. A funeral plan is a simple way to prepay funeral costs in advance at today’s prices. ‘The Independent Way’ individual funeral plan is backed by the largest independent provider of funeral plans, Golden Charter. Funds go into a securely protected trust, guaranteeing peace of mind as prices are fixed at the time of payment. Customers can be as specific as they like in defining their funeral wishes, rather than being offered pre-arranged packages. As Matthew said, “we’re here to listen, not to push products.”

Say goodbye, mourn , reflect or simply celebrate a person’s life.

Above right: Patrick and Sandy Gallagher, with son Matthew (left).

goodbye Matthew’s father Patrick began making coffins half a century ago at the age of 15, and became a fully qualified funeral director and then embalmer in London. In 1978, he moved to work in Cuckfield where Matthew attended both local schools. In 1991, the family opened their funeral business in Haywards Heath and, later, Burgess Hill. Patrick’s wife Sandy is a trained bereavement counsellor. The business also has two lady funeral directors, Mikki Taylor, who has been with Pat and Sandy since early 2000, and Shayne Hilbourne, who joined in 2009. Shayne brings with her a wealth of experience in the care sector; she is also an adviser for pre-paid funeral plans – advice is given free of charge on a strictly ‘no obligation’ basis. Supporting the local community is at the heart of the P & S Gallagher ethos. They recently held a charity golf day, raising £1,000 for the Age UK Cherry Tree Centre in Burgess Hill. On 31st August, they’ll be hosting a charity Summer Jazz Afternoon with a hog roast lunch at Downlands Park Nursing Home, Haywards Heath. The funeral of a loved one, or indeed the service you would like for your own funeral when the time comes, is an important event that deserves genuine care. P & S Gallagher have been serving the community for 35 years, offering a very personal and compassionate service at this most vulnerable time.

Summerlands continues to build on its great reputation as a boutique residential care home

with a heart.

Come home to

Summerlands As I sat on the large south facing patio in the warm August sunshine at Summerlands Residential Care Home, I couldn’t help noticing how well the home suits its name. The seating area is surrounded by beautifully maintained flower borders and sheltered by high evergreens. It will shortly overlook the brand new, delightful water feature and pond, which are currently under construction. To complete the image of the rural idyll, laughter and voices from the elderly residents spilled out into the garden from the wide open doors of the lounge, where a lively word game was in progress. When Deborah Cresswell, the joint owner of Summerlands, arrived with the promised tea and biscuits, she explained the cheerful ‘buzz’ by telling me that there’s always a mid-morning organised activity of some sort – a quiz, a sing-song or even ‘seated aerobics’. Unfortunately, I had come a week too late for the annual summer party (pictured), which

32

happy family.

is held for not just the residents, but all of their extended families too; and these garden parties are joyous and always eagerly awaited events. This year’s Cowboys & Indians themed party had included a mechanical ‘bucking bronco’, not, I’m told, for the use of the residents, but for their children and, more probably, their grandchildren. Previous party themes have included ‘Hawaiian Party’ and the Olympic Games, where gold medals were given out for events such as Egg & Spoon and Sack Races. Of course, Summerlands is not a holiday camp, but a Residential Care Home for the elderly. There

are regular, cheerful activities for those who want to join in, but which don’t intrude on those members of the Summerlands ‘family’ of residents who would rather live a quieter life. And ‘family’ is a very important word here because it is at the heart of everything Deborah and her team have created. “We want all our residents to feel that they can behave as naturally and freely here as they would have done in their own homes,” explained Deborah. “We only have 30 residents, which is our full capacity, so everybody knows everybody else and we live together exactly like a large, extended and happy family.” Deborah went on to make the point that Summerlands could be described as a boutique residential home – a far cry from large, purpose-built care homes that are popping up everywhere these days. “But you have quite ambitious plans to extend and alter the property, don’t you?” I enquired. “We do,” Deborah replied, “but all the changes we’ve got planning permission www.sussexliving.com

for are specifically designed to improve the facilities for residents, relatives, staff and visitors. We have no intention whatever of increasing the number of residents we can accommodate. We offer 30 delightful en-suite bedrooms for our guests and that’s the way it will stay.” Amongst the exciting developments planned at Summerlands is a new dining room extension which, by means of a folding glass door, will permit access to the garden area and the existing residents’ lounge, and let more natural daylight flood in. A new Hair Dressing Salon will be created on the ground floor and a new office facility for the Care Manager will be built in the form of a log cabin in the garden, where it will blend in perfectly with its rustic surroundings.

The changes we’ve planned are specifically designed to improve facilities for residents, relatives, staff and visitors. The new kitchen extension will incorporate the latest in modern cooking equipment as well as providing much more space for the kitchen team to work in. There will be a new reception and sitting area at the entrance to the building, whilst the ongoing reshaping of the garden’s footpaths, shallow steps and soft landscaping will continue. Deborah and her husband Sean bought Summerlands in 2010 and they’ve been steadily improving the physical aspects of the building since they arrived – without altering the friendly and welcoming character of the home that is so vital for its residents. The Government’s Care Quality Commission is responsible for checking the standards of care in residential homes and they regularly turn up unannounced to conduct their investigations. The last such inspection was in February and, like all previous ones, Summerlands once again received a very favourable report. It’s easy to see why when you look at, for example, the incredibly detailed individual Care Plans for each

resident. Compiled when the resident first arrives, the Care Plan is constantly updated and records everything from food preferences to medication, from literacy to daily activity. Deborah personally audits a selection of Care Plans every month to ensure that nobody ever slips through the care net. “My mother had Alzheimer’s,” she tells me. “Her care was shocking and that’s what drives me to ensure that our residents not only have a safe, comfortable and friendly environment to live in, but they know that they’re appreciated, and that we really do care for them.”

Mid Sussex RDA:

Freedom to ride i watched in wonder as a girl, clearly

thrilled to be holding the reins of her bay horse, rode him round the indoor arena, with the help of volunteers.

The girl was one of several young adults I met at Chestnuts Riding School, just north of Brighton, during a twice weekly session where the local branch of the Mid Sussex Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) offer free riding to children and adults with learning difficulties or physical disabilities. Before riders started arriving, I met the volunteer team, consisting of instructors, leaders and side helpers – each brimming with enthusiasm and obvious love for the vital role they play in the organisation. Sally Yonge has been volunteering for 42 years and recently received an award from HRH Princess Anne, the RDA president. Several of the other ladies have given decades of service, and instructor Ruby was leading lessons despite having recently had a hip replacement! Instructors are given six months of training before qualifying, and volunteers who lead the horses or support riders

at each side have training to fully equip them for these responsible positions. Watching the transformation that happens when riders take the reins is a fiercely emotional experience. Imagine being blind from birth, like one of the adult riders I met, and then discovering the sensation of moving freely astride a horse, borrowing his strength, sight and power. Suddenly you gain the confidence of movement without having to take someone’s arm or be pushed along in a wheelchair. continued on next page

Watching riders unfold as they sit tall on their horses is a joy. Their experience is profound and they seem transformed by the gentle engagement with these sensitive animals. Horses are renowned for being able to quickly gauge a rider’s confidence; they adapt to those they sense are vulnerable and become more placid in tune with their role as animal healers. Riders may be epileptic, blind or deaf; they may be suffering from spina bifida or have had a stroke or an amputation. Horses must be unflappable and calm to imbue their riders with confidence and co-ordination. The results speak for themselves: a young lady called Helen proudly showed me photos of dozens of rosettes she had won for mounted games, her smile spreading like magic across her face. The Mid Sussex RDA meet at Chestnuts Riding School twice a week, on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, for three 40-minute lessons. They have been based here for two years, when owners Richard and Sue Hazelden offered their facilities when the RDA moved from Brendon Riding School where they had been established since 1976.

The group was set up back in 1969 by Ann Holding, who worked with autistic children and believed that riding could help them; she took children from Downsview School in Brighton with support from the mounted section of the Brighton Police. They are the only RDA group in the area that provide riding for adults as well as for children, and the only criteria is that riders must not exceed 12 stone in weight. As a registered charity, all money comes from local fundraising and all helpers are volunteers. Horses are hired by the hour and, although three of the horses belong to Chestnuts, the RDA have their own horse, Super Ted, who earns his keep as a working livery. Riders range from 7-70 years old and the group currently help 35 disabled people. Adults attend the Tuesday sessions and children ride on Thursdays. There is a core of volunteers who help on both days and others who can manage one morning a week. Helpers are always welcome and potential volunteers are encouraged to come along to a session to see what is entailed. Many volunteers take a First Aid

certificate and all have to take part in the Data Barring System, which is the new equivalent of a CRB check. Adult riders can attend as long as they want; some people have been riding for years and their weekly session is a cherished part of their routine. As Sally commented, “we’re not out to achieve anything, just have

fun. It’s a social event, not just for riders but also for their carers.” It costs £8,500 per year to run the group and, unsurprisingly, fundraising help is always needed. A recent event at the South Downs Garden Centre in Hassocks made over £1,300 and the Burgess Hill Lions did much to contribute. Businesses are invited to invest £100 per year to be featured on the Mid Sussex RDA website and in their literature. The group are part of the nationwide RDA, consisting of over 500 groups and 18,000 volunteers who help up to 28,000 riders each year. Facilities at Chestnuts Riding School are perfect for disabled riders: the vast indoor school means that riding is never weather dependent, and Richard and Sue installed a hydraulic ramp so that riders can easily mount the horses without undue strain to them or their helpers. The four horses are sweet tempered and well loved: Mylo, Teddy Tosh, Basil and Super Ted are friends to their riders – the look of joy on Helen’s face after her ride when she patted her horse was unmistakeable. Anyone who has never witnessed the change

in expression of a profoundly disabled rider after s/he has ridden should take the time to see the effects first hand. One man with learning difficulties couldn’t help but express his delight: arm raised, he punched the sky in joy, shouting out, a wide smile lighting his entire face. It’s moments like these that prove connection with horses to be life-enhancing, therapeutic and irreplaceable. For individuals trapped by the limitations of their own bodies or minds, riding is a release,

Bedelands Walk Discover the countryside in and around Burgess Hill, taking in Bedelands Farm nature Reserve. From the car park, return to Maple Drive and turn left. On reaching Blackthorns, turn right, then almost immediately left into Maple Close. Follow the path ahead out to Valebridge Road, passing under the railway. Cross to the signed path opposite, and go over an estate road to pick up an enclosed path between houses. The path leads to a squeeze stile; you should follow the obvious path ahead to a gap in the hedge, then walk through two fields along a left-hand field edge to a stile by a dwelling.Follow the track ahead and, at the entrance to Great Ote Hall,

take the left indicated path on the four-arm signpost. Great Ote Hall is a Grade I listed building, which has been owned by the Godman family since 1530. Go over a squeeze stile, then through a metal gate. Follow the wide track ahead for about Âź mile to a metal gate, then cross the field ahead diagonally to the top left-hand corner. Go over a squeeze stile and walk slightly uphill on an enclosed path to join the drive to Lunces Hall. Cross the drive to the kissing gate opposite, turn left and walk parallel with the drive on an enclosed path. Go through a metal gate and down a flight of steps, and maintain direction ahead through a large field, dropping downhill to a narrow gap between fences to cross a footbridge. Go up the field ahead alongside trees to join Theobalds Road via a squeeze stile. Follow this residential Road out to Valebridge Road. Cross Valebridge Road with care to the pavement opposite and turn right uphill. Just before a bus stop, turn left on a signed path and cross the railway with extreme caution via a pair of substantial stiles. You are now in Bedelands Farm Nature Reserve. The Reserve is owned by Mid Sussex District Council and was declared a Local Nature Reserve in 1991. The Friends of Burgess Hill Green Circle Network help to maintain it. It covers 80 acres and consists of ancient meadows, woodland, hedgerows and ponds. continued on page 41 SuSSex Living September 2013

To resume the walk, turn right and walk parallel with the railway to go over a raised causeway, and carry on downhill. Where the path bears right into trees, follow a fence line left on a wide path, with Valebridge Pond on your right. Pass through a gap in the hedge at the end of the pond, close to the former Mill. Ignore the path to your right, and go over a small footbridge into Big Wood. Shortly, the paths diverge; take the right fork and carry on through the wood, with a pond on your left. Exit the wood and follow the enclosed path ahead, which soon becomes a boardwalk curving round the wood. Go through another wood and, on reaching two small footbridges, maintain direction ahead. At a junction of paths, bear right over a footbridge and, at a signpost, go through a gate. Cross the field ahead back to your car.

The end of the summer is always a bit of a relief, if you ask me. Autumn wardrobes are built around one sartorial staple that is hard to argue with: sleeves.

heaLth beaut y st yLe

MIRROR MIRROR MIRROR on the wall...

Toned arms are a beautiful sight, worthy of display in tank tops, strappy vests or sleeveless gowns. But if you’re not uber-sporty, under 30, genetically blessed or a celebrity, you may feel that these garment choices are not for you. The simple fact is that many women in their prime feel uncomfortable baring their arms. Unfortunately, our skin is affected by gravity and the passage of time, and the upper arms are particularly prone to what is more or less affectionately known as ‘bingo wings’, ‘old lady arms’ or ‘nana flaps’! And you’d have to do an awful lot of press-ups and tricep dips to make any real difference to what nature has predestined for you. Luckily, there’s no need to hit the doldrums and hide in baggy jumpers once the summer is over. Rejoice at the wealth of wardrobe options autumn brings!

Call to

arms Shirts and blouses, jersey tops, knitwear, dresses – sleeves not only provide warmth, they can do wonders for silhouetting your arms to best elongating effect, provided you stay away from skin-tight or big puffy sleeves, which are both wholly unflattering. Short cap sleeves are a no-no too, especially if you’re well-endowed up top. It’s all about balancing out the upper and lower body. Rocket science it is not. Longer sleeves are best, I find, and you could even look for floating cuffs or fluted sleeves to balance out a bulkier upper arm. For an elegant evening look, try sheer fabrics such as lace or chiffon. These materials provide just enough coverage to disguise underarm fat but still give the illusion of sexy bare arms. My personal favourite and a definite wardrobe staple are 3/4 length sleeves. Why? Easy. They finish at the slimmest part of the arm and show off the least flabby area: the wrist. Obviously, you can also experiment with jackets and cardies, shrugs, pashminas and other cover-up options. Or try layering: a basic longsleeved tee may just work under a sleeveless tunic or dress – bringing your style bang up to date in the process. Finally, if all else fails, cheat! A funky chunky bangle, statement earrings or gorgeous necklace can draw the eye away from the problem area, while accessories can add colour and sparkle to your outfit and lift your overall appearance, which is always a good thing.

There’s much more to Sarah Lacey than dry cleaning. Her traditional, fully hand-finished laundry service is now really in demand.

perfect finish every time The

Sarah Lacey Dry Cleaning is a true family business. Started by current owner Sarah Tampion-Lacey’s greatgreat-great-grandmother back in the 1800s, the family has literally been laundering in Haywards Heath for generations. “We still launder in the traditional fashion, but with the added benefit of modern equipment, meaning we can produce a really high quality finish,” says Sarah (pictured right). And if you’ve ever tried to get your Egyptian cotton sheets or damask tablecloths to look as good as they did when you bought them – or get a really nice crisp finish on your shirts – you will know exactly what she means. “We have the machinery, the skill and the commitment to quality to produce a professional result that is nigh on impossible to achieve at home,” she adds. Sarah Lacey’s laundry service is completely traditional, in the sense that every item is given exactly the sort of care and attention you would expect. A far cry from high-volume modern commercial laundries, Sarah only caters for domestic clients and ensures every item is handfinished to exacting standards. I watched in awe as she showed me how items are checked, double checked and, only when she is completely happy with the finished article, carefully packed, ready for customer collection. All laundry and dry cleaning is done on the premises, which is a little hard to believe when you consider the innocent looking shop exterior with the quaint snowdrop logo. But I know, because Sarah took me downstairs to the two floors where it all happens, the nerve centre of a major operation.

A wonderful smell of fresh laundry and squeaky cleanliness wafted all around as I walked past industrial washers, tubed up to a bewildering array of different washing and stain removal agents, and saw sheet presses, steam ironing and finishing stations and much more besides. Sarah offered to demonstrate the state-of-the-art shirt-pressing machine, and turned a freshly washed, still damp men’s shirt into a ready-to-wear garment in about a minute. The finished result? Totally crease-free and better than new! I watched the shop’s Manager, Deb Gracey, in the stain removal section as she expertly chose from a vast selection of chemical agents to apply just the right thing for the right stain, in preparation for dry cleaning. “We use the latest stain removal treatments and can achieve amazing results with all garments, table linen, bed linen and, of course, shirts. But we will launder or dry clean almost anything,” she smiled.

“ We have the machinery, the skill and the commitment to quality to produce a professional result that is almost impossible to achieve at home.” Sarah Lacey Dry Cleaners pride themselves on their attention to detail and commitment to customer care. So when Sarah tells me “I just love what I do,” I have no trouble believing her. The evidence is all around, for everyone to see.

KEEP CALM AND

MARRY ON The question has been popped and you’re now officially engaged, but before you can ride off into the sunset to live happily ever after, there’s a wedding to be organised. Whether your dream is vintage, eco-friendly, rustic luxe, Shoreditch hipster or a Katie Price extravaganza, your wedding is bound to be one of the most memorable days of your life. And to ensure this is for all the right reasons, it’s really important to get organised, as it will save you time, money and sleepless nights worrying whether the name cards should be off-white, cream or ivory. So, here’s our Wedmin Guide to all the essential wedding admin that will ensure you don’t spend your whole engagement worrying about The Big Day.

The Big Decisions Once the excitement and news of your engagement has sunk in, it’s time to make some big decisions: what type of ceremony and reception would you like, when are you planning to tie the knot (and if it’s in the UK, don’t bank on the weather!), what about themes or colours, and the really big one: your budget and who will pay for what. There is so much wedding inspiration available that it can be overwhelming. And if you don’t limit your research, it’s easy to get confused by all the ideas out there. I once attended aTwenties Gatsby themed wedding, but with an Elvis impersonator as the star turn! It might be a good idea to create a wedding scrapbook to keep track of ideas and pictures that appeal; that way you can streamline and focus your choices. continued on next page SuSSex Living September 2013

HYPNOTHERAPY AT SUSSEX OSTEOPATH AND COMPLEMENTARY HEALTH CLINIC 135-137 HIGH STREET, HURSTPIERPOINT

Want to be calm, relaxed and happy on your Wedding Day? Your wedding is the best day of your life, and there is no need to feel anxious. No more worrying about seating plans, venues or menus – look forward to this special day in a way that lets you remember why you are gathering loved ones around you to celebrate your relationship. Hypnotherapy can be an effective tool to help soothe any anxieties, build your resolve to get fitter before the Big Day, or help you look forward with confidence and calm to saying your vows or making a wedding speech. Nicola Preston-Bell is an experienced, solutions-focused psychotherapist and hypnotherapist who will work with you to achieve your goal, so that your wedding nerves are history and your confidence can bloom. Call the Clinic for a confidential discussion or to book appointments.

01273 835116 www.sussex-osteopath.co.uk

Also, try to remember to make all decisions jointly. No future husband wants to watch his kind and beautiful fiancée morph into a demanding Bridezilla With A Schedule, as she plans the ‘most epic wedding ever’, dictating every detail to make sure she gets Her Day. It’s also a good idea to open a dedicated bank account for all the wedding costs, because that way you won’t feel guilty every time you buy a pint of milk because you’re squandering money that should be going into the Wedding Fund. Big decisions made, you can spring into action: • • • • • • •

Book a church/venue for the ceremony on your chosen date/time Book a reception venue and check out guest accommodation nearby Compile a guest list and send out Save The Day notices Choose your wedding party – bridesmaids, ushers and Best Man Book time off work for the wedding and honeymoon Start looking for your wedding dress Research wedding suppliers continued on next page

Create a wedding scrapbook to keep track of ideas and pictures that appeal.

Six months to go As the Big Day comes into view, it’s time to finalise your plans. Do be realistic about both your budget and going down the DIY route. While it’s great to personalise your wedding and save money with DIY options, do you really want to spend six weeks painting individual pebbles for each guest, or making jam jars of contained beach scenes for every table? Possibly not. Now is the time to: •

• • • • •

Order the wedding dress. Most brides do lose weight before the Big Day but please be realistic. If you’re a healthy size 12, ordering a size 8 might just be a bridge too far. Also, play to your strengths: if you don’t have Pippa’s bottom, a fitted column dress might not suit. Order the bridesmaid dresses and please: be kind. I once had the curious pleasure of dressing as a ‘Burlesque Ballerina’ for one bride’s vision, and I would strongly caution against too much cleavage, leg, netting, taffeta or metallic. Order the cake. Go mad here; what’s an extra 12lbs once you’ve got that ring on your finger? Order the wedding stationery, or start making your own if that’s what you’ve decided. Book transport. There are only so many fairytale Cinderella carriages available, so get in quick. Book a florist and start thinking about the wedding flowers. Book a photographer.

• • • •

• • •

Book caterers. Book any entertainment/DJ. Book hairdresser/make-up artist. Book first-night accommodation and the honeymoon, checking passports and any vaccinations or visas required. Start to compile a wedding list. Start looking for wedding accessories – shoes, lingerie, veil, jewellery etc. Start thinking about table favours, decorations and name cards. These can be made at home or with friends, if you’re a keen DIYer. But there are many ready-made ones out there too. Keep it stress-free.

Three months to go Now is the time to really start finetuning your arrangements. Remember to: • • • • • •

• • •

Arrange suits/fittings for the groom and his men. Buy wedding rings. Send out invitations and the wedding list. Finalise the flowers. Decide on vows, readings and music for your ceremony. Think about your first dance. And please don’t attempt to recreate that scene from Dirty Dancing without the help of a choreographer and plenty of training. Create a music request list, along with a ‘do not play’ list. The Birdie Song is not compulsory! Order the table favours/decorations. Buy your shoes and break them in – you will be wearing them all day. continued on next page

One month to go If you’ve been organised up to now, the Wedding Day should be coming together nicely. Make sure you: • • • • • •

• • • • •

Have a trial run with your hairdresser/make-up artist. Arrange final dress/suit fittings. Buy a guest book. Confirm all bookings. Buy anything needed for the honeymoon. Have Hen/Stag Nights at least two weeks before the main event, to allow for a decent recovery period. Decide on witnesses and organise a rehearsal if you’re going for a church wedding. Finalise seating plans and create name cards. Finalise numbers and any dietary requirements with the caterers. Provide the photographer with list of essential shots. Organise presents for helpers. Draft a schedule of wedding day timings for the wedding party and give a list of suppliers with contact numbers to the Best Man.

One day to go Hopefully, all of your diligent planning has paid off and you can start to relax and enjoy the build-up to your special day. There should be little to do, other than: • • • •

On the Big Day, eat

breakfast!

Champagne on an empty stomach is not a good idea.

• • • •

• •

Give rings to the Best Man. Ensure honeymoon luggage, passports and tickets are ready. Lay out the wedding outfit. Create an emergency kit of plasters, mints, safety pins, make-up etc. Pamper yourself with a massage, manicure/pedicure Get an early night, even if it’s largely sleepless! The Big Day Eat breakfast! Champagne on an empty stomach is not a good idea if you want to remain conscious for the whole day. Check the flowers have arrived and the Best Man has the rings. Take a deep breath, relax and enjoy yourself!

Scaynes Hill’s inn on the green is enjoying an incredible turnaround, thanks to the passion and drive of the pub’s

new owners.

With its rambling beer garden, cosy bar area and welcoming vibe, the Inn on the Green at Scaynes Hill feels like a thriving community pub. It’s hard to believe that the Inn has gone from run-down and neglected to lively and popular in just a few weeks – but that’s until you meet the Whalley family. The new landlord, Luis, and his parents, Rod and Lesley (all pictured right), are clearly passionate about their new business. “Before we moved in, the place didn’t have a good

Warm welcome at the Inn on the Green

reputation,” explains Luis. “There was no food on offer and it didn’t seem particularly welcoming. We’ve only been here for a few weeks, but we’ve already got fourand-a-half stars on Trip Advisor and we’re ranked sixth out of 45 restaurants in Haywards Heath.” Turning a pub’s reputation on its head in such a short period of time is no mean feat. It’s taken plenty of hard work, but also some truly innovative ideas. Luis points with pride to his cocktail bar, where guests can learn how to mix their own favourite concoctions; and at the grape-, strawberry-, and appleflavour shisha pipes. The major change for the Inn on the Green, however, is the menu.

“We really want to put the emphasis on our food,” says Luis. “We’re offering a traditional British pub menu, with specials from around the world.” The specials menu has proved particularly popular. It often focuses on fish and seafood, including vodka oysters, scallops, whitebait and mussels, served in the soon-to-be-refurbished restaurant. Luis is a keen scuba diver, and even dives for lobsters in his free time. Few pubs in the area can claim home-caught lobsters, cocktail-making lessons and a shisha bar among their attractions! The Whalleys welcome everyone – from kids, who can work off their energy on the tree house in the huge beer garden, to wedding parties and local business

people. “We offer a 20% discount to local businesses, and there’s free wi-fi if people want to come in here and work,” says Luis. As well as open mic nights every other Thursday and live entertainment on most weekends, there are plans to reinstate the pub snooker and darts team in the games room behind the bar. A golf society, with special rates at Lingfield Golf Club, is in the offing – and Lesley is keen to invest in a bouncy castle for sunny summer weekends. “We want to put the Inn on the Green back on the map as a community hub, so we’re trying to get the locals involved in the pub and make it a part of their lives again,” says Luis. “I know we’ve still got some way to go but when we’ve finished, it’s going to be fantastic.”

Food and dRinK

Food, glorious food! When Honoré de Balzac wasn’t eating, he was writing novels, fast and furiously. And when he wasn’t writing novels, he was eating – very seriously. At one well documented meal at the Restaurant Véry, near the Louvre in Paris, he is said to have happily (very happily!) consumed a hundred oysters, twelve mutton cutlets, a duck with turnips, two partridges, and what we call a Dover sole, but they say is a Normandy sole. I wouldn’t be able to do very much of anything after that lot, let alone pick up a pen and start writing a novel. So here, we’ll just have the partridge.

roast Partridge (1 per person)

1 oven-ready partridge 2 rashers of rindless smoked streaky bacon 25g of unsalted butter 1 small shallot

2 cloves of garlic, peeled and crushed 1 bay leaf 1 large sprig of thyme Salt & freshly ground black pepper

Finally, you might like the following, which I heard on the radio recently: Jamie Fox, a Music and English graduate from Bangor University who took a job as a human scarecrow to frighten away partridges from fields of oilseed rape at a farm at Aylsham in Norfolk, said that ringing a cowbell or playing the accordion seemed to scare the birds away, but a ukulele had no effect at all.

Hurst Festival 2013 14th-28th September is Now in its 9th year, the Hurst better known as Festival seems to grow

bigger, better and more eclectic as the years go by. It simply refuses to be And with Colin defined as arts, or history, or music because it is Matthews as its all of these and more. new chairman A glance at this year’s buzzing with ideas, programme reveals a truly astonishing array you’d be mad of entertainments, from to miss it. the big numbers like the Abba Gold concert which kicks off the music on the opening night, to the extremely professional Brighton Gay Men’s Chorus, who were chosen as this year’s finale. In between are talks, walks, soirées, exhibitions, films, dance and much more. Around 70 events will be crammed into this mad, chaotic, brilliant, fun fortnight. On 14th September, a Village Open Day will signal the start of the Festival and it will set the tone for the events to follow. The bustling village high street will become a scene of revelry as it is transformed into a theatre for wandering circus acts, jugglers, musicians and performers of all kinds, while the Village Green will be the stage for live music and everybody-join-in dancing amongst Circus Kinetica’s amazing wind mobiles. A short stroll past the energetically rung bells of Holy Trinity Church brings visitors to the village allotments, where the normally reticent local gardeners are holding their own open day. They’ll be offering advice as well as vegetables and running a scarecrow competition. A wide range of free children’s activities, such as ‘messy play’ (is there any other kind?) and face painting will be offered at the

Festival time in Hurspierpoint.

Around 70 events will be crammed into this

brilliant, mad, fun fortnight. Village Centre and if you need more, there’s always the ‘Zumba’ dancing on the Green in the afternoon. The new Festival Chairman is Colin Matthews (pictured right), and he could hardly be better qualified for his role. Now retired, Colin was born in Hurstpierpoint and was Stage Manager for the Hurstpierpoint Players at the age of 15. Since that first flirtation with showbiz, Colin has had a successful career as a gallery and theatre manager, working with stars including Nina Simone and Germaine Greer. Colin is currently Vice Chair of the Brighton Fringe as well as Chairman of Onward Arts. In this, his first year in charge at Hurstpierpoint, he says his ambition is “to maintain the momentum and growth that has been achieved over the past eight years and to continue to involve as many local people and organisations as possible.” Look out Edinburgh, here comes Hurstpierpoint!

The Hurst Festival 2013 programme is available free all over Hurstpierpoint. You can book tickets in person at the Players Theatre, High Street, or by phone (01273 833696) or online at www. hurstfestival.org

art

Ben has a genuine confidence, rare in

artists of any age,

let alone one so young.

Picasso once said that it takes

a lifetime to learn how to draw like a child. After looking at the energetic paintings of eight-year-old Ben Driver, I can understand what he meant.

Ben, who has been drawing since the age of four, is proof that parental encouragement of a child’s creativity pays dividends; he will be having his first exhibition at Hurstpierpoint Open Studios this month. He took me to the coach house at the end of his garden, which is where he paints onto glass, straight from his vivid imagination via sketches he makes beforehand. Asked about his favourite subjects, he rattled off a list every boy could relate to: knights in castles, robots, rockets, spaceships and aliens. No surprise to learn that his favourite TV show is Dr Who, which provides inspiration for some of his paintings, although most spring directly from his boundless sense of creativity. He often draws in biro, colouring his ornately attired figures in bright, graffiti-style hues. Ben has a genuine confidence, rare in artists of any age, let alone one so young. I asked Ben to make a drawing while I photographed him in the process of creating. A bold, multilimbed alien quickly emerged, coloured in and ready for action on some far-flung planet. He scarcely paused while he worked, and went into finer and finer detail

64

as the figure was born on paper right in front of my eyes. His largest painting, Space City Under Attack, is a perfectly composed piece on glass, intended to be exhibited with a light source behind it to show the colours to their best advantage. It has an energy that is difficult to ignore and Ben is justifiably proud of his boldest work. Painting behind glass is an unusual technique but perfect for Ben’s graphic style. Once he’s sketched his idea, his father lays down the outline in thick black line and Ben paints on the colour behind the lines. This results in sharp, crisp lines that wouldn’t look out of place in a gallery of urban street art; the outlines contain the colour and tie the compositions together – it’s a highly effective technique. Ben, who attends St Lawrence School in Hurst, is intending to have prints made of some of his larger paintings, and cards should be available during the Hurst Open Studios weekend where his exhibition is showing. Visitors can sample homemade cakes and teas at the Open Studio, and two adult www.sussexliving.com

artists, Rachel Galbraith and Kerry Hummerston, will be exhibiting alongside Ben. The family only moved to their new home in October. Ben obviously relishes the chance to paint in the coach house, once home to horses, with its high ceilings and wonderful light. He refers to it as “my coach house” and I’m guessing that, as he grows older, it will be gradually filled with paintings as he defines his own style further. I asked him what he’d like to do when he gets older and he said he wants to be an architect. If he fulfils his ambition, there are sure to be some inventive and unique buildings emerging in 20 years’ time. The future should be an interesting place for Ben; his talent could take him in any direction. If you want to catch an artist in the making, make time to view Ben’s work and find out what’s so special about this young man’s imaginative world and refreshing talent.

So it’s September again. How did that happen? I’m still getting the hang of summer and suddenly we are into the season of ‘mists and mellow fruitfulness’. I’m thinking about ordering logs and we’re picking brambles for blackberry and apple tart. More than any other month, September seems to signal a complete change of focus and a speeding up of the pace at which we live, and that’s especially true if you happen to be the parents of small children. For them, the easy-going, long days of summer holidays have gone. They’ve been replaced by ‘back to school’ time and periods of intense activity at the beginning of the day and mid-way through the afternoon, when crises can develop without warning. They may seem like minor problems, but they appear entirely unexpectedly and usually need resolving without debate. A seven year old, for instance, can need convincing quickly, between face-washing and breakfast, that there are no style options available when it comes to school uniform. The tiniest ones need to be persuaded that going off to infant school is not the same as being sold into slavery. And most children have to accept that all new shoes squeak. “They just do. It’s because they’re nice and shiny and new. No it’s not just yours. Nobody will laugh at you. They’ll stop after you’ve worn them for a bit. Honestly!” It’s exhausting, really. Of course, real crises do occasionally arise, like discovering as you’re about to leave for school that you’ve lost ‘Wally’ the class bear who’s been having a special sleepover with you. That is certainly panic time, but it’s as nothing compared to the sinking feeling you experience when the teacher calls you in at school pick-up time and says: “Please don’t worry about your daughter’s Show and Tell today. We all thought it was very funny.”

A great solution for everyone if you would like to make a positive difference to a family’s life, while enriching your own, why not consider becoming a Short Break

Foster Carer?

West Sussex County Council are actively looking for people who can make a regular commitment to foster a child, whether for just a few hours a week or an overnight stay once a month. Val and Phil are a couple who have been fostering children for nearly 25 years and for most of that time have specialised in short break fostering for children with disabilities. “It’s incredibly rewarding,” explains Val. “Often, people are frightened of children with special needs because they can’t see beyond the child’s problems, but there is so much support and training available, it’s easy to learn how to give the care these children need.” “Over the years, people have told us we’re amazing, wonderful, even superhuman,” laughs Phil. “But, of course, we’re not; anybody can do this. You don’t need special skills, just the willingness to learn to care.” With short break foster care, everyone benefits. Carers enjoy making a positive difference to the lives of the children they care for, welcoming them into their own families and having fun on outings that may not be possible with their own family. The child gains some independence and confidence away from home and gets a chance to socialise with other people, while their families get a much needed break and can spend time together on outings or just recharging their batteries. “We have a young lad at the moment who loves coming here,” Val tells me. “He’s full of hugs and laughter and it allows his mum, who has two little ones, a chance to get out to go shopping, or take the others swimming.” Family Placement Worker Sara Taylor explains that the big difference between short breaks and mainstream fostering is the slow introduction process. “We have lots of initial meetings to make sure we match the right family with the right child and that all of the skills and support networks are in place beforehand.” Alongside the training and support provided, carers are also given any specialist equipment that

may be required and receive an allowance to cover the costs associated with fostering a child. What’s more, foster carers benefit from endless flexibility and always stay in control of what they can and can’t do. So, if you find that short breaks aren’t for you, there’s the opportunity to try other types of fostering. “People may fear becoming overwhelmed by the responsibilities associated with fostering,” says Phil. “But there are 168 hours in a week, and just caring for a child for eight of those hours will make such a difference to a family struggling to cope.” A Short Break Foster Care evening will be held at the Longley Exhibition Room at Crawley Library on Tuesday 1st October, 4.30-7pm.

are you eligible to be a foster carer? most people are. The main thing is your desire and ability to meet the needs of the foster child. Other than that, YOU CAN BE:

Education

Parenting –

do we care too much? Parenting is a daunting task,

so how do we best prepare our children for

life in the adult world?

Sir Isaac Newton, Albert Einstein and Thomas Edison have all achieved immortality through their brilliance, but what you may not know is that they all did so badly at school, they were either asked to leave or simply dropped out. Clearly, none of these high achievers were subjected to the type of ‘helicopter parenting’ that many of our present-day children face. Modern-day parenting can be a relentless task and our desire to do the best for our children can often mean they are subjected to the type of pressure and scheduling that would make many a Managing Director collapse at his desk with exhaustion. From babyhood, flash cards and ‘teachable moments’ are now commonplace, and as our little darlings progress, their timetable starts bulging with extracurricular activities including music lessons, Mandarin, Drama, Dance, Cricket, Athletics and extra tuition for entrance tests. I’ve even heard of university-aged children being ferried around, gifted large sums of money, stalked on Skype, while some have Ocado orders delivered to their halls of residence by overly attentive parents. Is this really good for our children (or us, the parents, for that matter)? Our children, it seems, are running the risk of becoming projects with schedules, while parenting can turn into a stressful and competitive sport, with the end goal of making our offspring the brightest and the best of them all. It is no great secret that this quest for perfection has led to a marked rise in learning anxieties, eating disorders, selfharm and depression amongst our young. continued on next page S u ss e x L i v i n g September 2013

continued from previous page

Once upon a time, our children would be encouraged to go out and play, but today they are more likely to be raised ‘in captivity,’ to protect them against the harsher realities of life. Yet, being able to deal with issues around alcohol, smoking, bullying, drugs, sex and crime is far more empowering for our children than scaring them with horror stories. Surely, we need to be developing strength of character and teaching the type of values that allow youngsters to cope with difficult situations, so that they will be able to make good decisions when faced with such problems? What’s more, many employers are finding that our school leavers and graduates are illequipped to thrive in the workplace. Many complain at their lack of initiative and low levels of common sense. But is it any wonder that, when finally left to their own devices, many young people are at a loss without parental guidance or the structured challenge of an exam to pass? So, how did we get here? Much of it can be traced back to the Government’s preoccupations with exam results

and league tables. Some would argue that this has reduced education to a quest for A*s and a place at a Russell Group university. Yet, such a narrowminded view and near-obsession with exams results and academic achievement is not only detrimental to our children’s mental health, neither does it make for the type of citizens that society needs to flourish: adults who are also responsible, respectful, resilient, creative, altruistic and kind. As C.S. Lewis once said, “Education without values, as useful as it is, seems rather to make man a more clever devil.” Thankfully, educationalists are recognising this problem and many schools now offer a more enhanced pastoral education, teaching life skills

We need to allow children to

discover who they are, rather

than who we want

them to be

and helping their students to develop their innate character traits. Moreover, the move towards ‘slow parenting,’ which allows children to discover who they are, rather than who we want them to be, is gaining momentum. This develops children with more self-confidence and reliance and instils some much needed fun and relaxation back into modern day parenting. After all is said and done, it’s an approach that didn’t harm Newton, Einstein or Edison.

The possibilities are endless. To book your visit at Great Walsted School call 01444 483528 or email registrar@greatwalstead.co.uk www.greatwalstead.co.uk

BOOK REVIEW

Downlands Community School, Hassocks

OPEN EVENING TUESDAY 1ST OCTOBER 6PM

Call Me Yesterday by Tim Beresford

A timely sense of economic unease runs through the heart of local author Tim Beresford’s punchy sci-fi trilogy, which takes an insightful look at the relationship between cutting-edge science and the global financial system. Call Me Yesterday is the first book in the series. It follows Mark Wright, a banking whizz with a degree in Astrophysics, who finds himself embroiled in the murky world of pan-dimensional communication when his ex-girlfriend begins working as a technician for Physics professor Mason Tyler. Unbeknown to the wider scientific community, Tyler has discovered the existence of faster-than-light particles and worked out how to use them to send messages back in time. He intends to establish an early warning system that will alert the world to future natural disasters – but his plans are put on hold when Mark points out the disastrous implications for the financial markets. With the help of a small band of friends, the two embark on an ingenious deception that will use Tyler’s discovery to save lives without revealing its true nature. As media interest builds around the project, calamity appears to strike – but all is not as it seems… Written with obsessive attention to detail, Call Me Yesterday brings a sense of gritty realism to its sci-fi material. Occasional overuse of academic language and the odd stilted conversation doesn’t detract from the main themes: the flaws inherent in our present economic system and the double-edged sword presented by many major new scientific discoveries. While the seemingly unimpeachable morality of all the main characters sometimes has you praying for a real villain, the plot is anything but predictable, and the twist at the end comes as a genuine surprise. Beresford’s years spent working with systems for financial analysis in the City of London positions him perfectly to grapple with some technically challenging issues, and the next two books in the trilogy go on to address social and environmental as well as economic dilemmas. Science Fiction aficionados will find plenty to like here, but if you generally stay away from the genre, then give this book a chance – it might just surprise you.

business to business

spreads its wings now in its ninth year, Burgess Hill Business Parks Association (BHBPA) is spreading its wings much

further than the confines of the town, through Mid Sussex and beyond. With more than 145 members now signed up, including Brighton & Hove Albion and Sussex County Cricket Club, the future of the Association has never been more assured. Coordinated by Peter Liddell, the Association is enjoying continued success in addressing burning issues facing industry and commerce in the region. Members benefit from a weekly briefing by e-newsletter, and the organisation holds regular networking events at local venues including Plumpton College, Ockenden Manor and the Birch Hotel. These events have proved highly beneficial, allowing a wide range of companies across Mid Sussex to network and to thrash out issues of mutual concern. In addition to nurturing links with other key organisations, the BHBPA is sponsored by the Town Council and Mid Sussex District Council. This is vitally important since its agenda covers so many issues affecting the business community – from illegal traveller camps to parking issues. Support comes from many quarters, including invaluable assistance from the area’s MP, Nicholas Soames, who is a keen supporter, having been involved since the group’s inception. The BHBPA boasts a wide spectrum of successes over the years – among them the extremely successful ‘Burgess Hill Means Business’ initiative. Showcasing the diversity of business across the area, the fifth event was staged in May this year, with an an even bigger and better one planned for next year. With plenty of activity, the BHBPA is committed to developing opportunities for young people. An apprenticeship scheme is now well underway with the involvement of Oakmeeds Community College and Central Sussex College. To build on this success, the Association is keen to progress the initiative by connecting with additional schools and colleges.

Guided by a passionate steering group, the BHBPA is uniquely placed to offer much support to dozens of businesses, however large and whatever their sphere. To mark Burgess Hill’s 25th anniversary celebration of its twinning with Schmallenberg, Germany, a group of their business professionals will visit Victoria Business Park on Friday 27th September. Also, many BHBPA members recently sponsored the Burgess Hill Bonfire Society for its forthcoming procession and display on 28th September. The future looks bright for the BHBPA, with many innovative projects underway and even more community-wide involvement spearheaded by the business sector. The Association will continue to grow membership and offer the best networking and lobbying opportunities for all aspiring business owners. See www.bhbpa.co.uk for further information. The

last

word Well, here we are. It’s been fun, frantic and a bit of a roller coaster at times, but we got there: Sussex Living is celebrating its 100th issue this month. Although the two of us have only been in charge for the last 22 issues, we have, of course, been involved in the magazine for much, much longer than that. We thought you might like this handpicked selection of our favourite front covers, starting with the first issue of South Downs Living, as it was then, back in June 2005. The magazine title and logo have undergone several changes over the years, as you can see, to take us to the Sussex Living magazine you know (and hopefully love!) today.

Our thanks to all those who have helped us get to this magic number: our fantastically capable team here at Sussex Living, including freelance writers, photographers and distribution staff and, of course, our valued advertisers and readers. As always, we appreciate your feedback, good or bad – preferably good!

TaNiS BaNham & carla FaulKS Co-Directors. Sussex Living Ltd

From top left to right: First issue (June 2005), Issue 54 (November 2009), Issue 55 (December 2009), Issue 60 (May 2010), Issue 84 (May 2012), Issue 89 (October 2012), Issue 93 (February 2013).

Dear Sussex Living… … Thank you so much for the coverage you have given the Hospice through the magazine, your blog and through social media. I am in no doubt that this all contributed to our numbers at the Sleep Walk being up from last year! Thank you. With the entry fees and sponsorship pledged so far, the Sleep Walk is expected to raise over £25,000, which is fantastic! Marie Shipley St Peter & St James Hospice & Continuing Care Centre, Chailey
