Pippa Greenwood speaks to Sara Whatley about her love of pathogens, being part of team Gardeners’ Question Time and the benefits of gardening with children
A
familiar family face of gardening sitting comfortably alongside Monty Don, Carol Klein and Alan Titchmarsh on the horticultural bench of fame, Pippa Greenwood is an expert plant pathologist and all-round gardening guru. Added to that, she is a truly warm and genuine person – it’s no wonder she has graced our screens and airwaves for so long now. With an encyclopaedic knowledge of pathogens, diseases and plant pests, Pippa has brought science and gardening to the masses through her television, radio and writing work. She was a regular presenter on Gardeners’ World for 13 years, is a regular panellist on BBC Radio 4’s Gardeners’ Question Time since 1994, has made guest appearances on numerous other television programmes, is a regular contributor to Gardeners’ World magazine and has also penned many best-selling books over the years. She was even the gardening consultant on ITV’s Rosemary and Thyme! In 2007 Pippa was awarded an honorary Doctor of Science from Durham University. I spoke to Pippa from her family home in Hampshire where she has her organic kitchen garden, which Gardening makes she first developed for you feel better, Gardeners’ World.
we should all be investing in that
Pippa discovered her love of gardening at a young age. The youngest of four girls it was the place that Pippa received all of her mother’s attention, so whether it was the garden or her mother that drew Pippa out there, she loved it. “She was an avid gardener, and let me have my own ‘garden’, a small square marked out with stones, at the age of four. I helped with the weeding, building bonfires,
and my love for gardening grew naturally,” says Pippa. Although affectionately known as ‘the bug lady’, it was gardening and plants that first piqued Pippa’s interest. “I studied botany first, then realised there were not a lot of jobs in that sector, so I wanted to move to something more practical and did my MSc specialising in Plant Pathology, which I became absolutely besotted with,” she tells me.

“From there I landed a job at The Royal Horticultural Society’s Garden at Wisley in Surrey, where I ran the Plant Pathology Department for 11 years and answered several thousand queries a year from troubled gardeners.” It was attending the Chelsea Flower Show with the Wisley team that lead Pippa into the limelight. With a wooden sign above their heads advertising their gardening expertise, a man from the BBC approached Pippa and asked to interview her. “It must have gone

pretty well as they then asked me to appear alongside Alan Titchmarsh on a behind-the-scenes programme of Chelsea. It was the ‘what went wrong’ behind the show.” That clearly went well too, as Pippa was then asked if she wanted to join Alan on BBC’s Daytime Live. This was in 1988. Then as the producer moved to Gardeners’ World, Pippa went

too. “I loved it and stayed there for 13 years. I had no idea what I was doing when I started out though – I had grown up in a house without a television!” Pippa laughs. The ball was rolling and Pippa took it in her stride. Other television work came along, publishing deals and radio too with various shows and of course Pippa’s long running panellist appearances on BBC Radio 4’s Gardeners’ Question Time. Has she ever been stumped by a gardening conundrum, I wonder? “The honest answer is yes!” admits Pippa, “but the thing is, there is always a panel of three up there and we work together as a team, plus we are seriously good friends. I think it’s important to say ‘I don’t know’ and pass it on to someone else. Someone will always know the answer, or everybody knows and argues about it! It’s pretty nerve-racking up there though – you don’t get to see the questions beforehand so it’s a case of pulling ‘pick me’ or ‘please don’t pick me’ faces at the chair, and hoping you don’t get too many very specific questions where you can only think of one answer… and then someone else on the panel says it before you. We really are such a team though, I’m lucky. It’s fun but terrifying.”

Pippa travels a lot with her work and so gets the chance to visit many gardens around the country. “Sussex has so many beautiful gardens it’s hard to choose just one!” she says when I ask if she had a favourite down South, but what sort of garden does tickle her fancy? “It either has to be something dramatic, like a cleverly planted geometric flower border, or something that I would like to have in my own garden. I also love calm gardens with gentle swaying movement and colour, but really, and I know it’s a cliché, I’m happiest at home more than anywhere else. Home is where you can feel relaxed and private.” Pippa reveals that her garden is her “personal space” with some bits still “a work in progress”, and that she loves her vegetable garden. “We live in such a beautiful part of the world, with the South Downs around us,” she says, “it’s so easy to
make excuses not to garden and to go walking instead.” Family is obviously very important to Pippa, and as I tell her about gardening with my little girl, who loves to hunker down and rootle through the earth to find worms, help me pop seeds into holes and pat down the earth of a newly potted plant, and of course, pluck the weeds – and occasional flower – out, Pippa says enthusiastically, “It brings it all back! Getting children into the garden is like pressing a smile button, they can change from grumpy to happy in a split second; it really is a brilliant thing to do.” “My son learnt to walk in the vegetable patch,” she continues, “and has always had an interest in gardening, whereas my daughter joined in when she was little then went right off it! Although the other day she sent me a message saying, ‘I’m just going to weed the vegetable patch, it’s a state!’ so she has clearly been missing the countryside and plants at university.” It seems only natural that children of a horticultural hotshot would follow in their mother’s footsteps, and as Pippa says, although she would never push her children into it, when you have gardened with a little child they hang onto that information somewhere and it may come out at a later date. Many children enjoy gardening at school, where they have the space and the funds, which is fantastic when not everybody is lucky enough to have their own garden at home, “but I think there is something about a parent and child gardening together which is special,” says Pippa. “It’s bonding and just a lovely thing to do together, and of course the benefits are huge – physically, ecologically, mentally. Gardening makes you feel better, we should all be investing in that.” The general population, and particularly younger generations, are much more interested in food and wellbeing nowadays, and gardening and growing-your-own fit nicely into that. “When I started working for the RHS in the 80s most of the board were of the suited and booted older gentlemen type, and many of the members where of the older generation too, but now the average age of gardeners has come down and greener living is certainly playing a part in that,” says Pippa. “Rarely would you have found a 30-something looking after their own allotment thirty years ago! Growing-your-own is not just for sustainability and environmental reasons, it tastes much nicer and has no nasty chemicals or pesticides either.” With those words ringing in my ears I’m off to check on the veg patch. l

Looking at the redevelopment of Eastbourne town centre, Peter d’Aguilar reveals all the summer fun on offer in this seaside town
SUMMER IN EASTBOURNE
T
hese are exciting times in Eastbourne. This popular south coast town is undergoing a spectacular metamorphosis. The Eastbourne Town Centre Improvement Scheme, a joint project between East Sussex County Council and Eastbourne Borough Council, is in the process of transforming the seaside resort into one of Britain’s most desirable destinations. The main thrust of the plan is to modernise Eastbourne’s town centre, creating an attractive pedestrianfriendly environment with civic space for cultural and social activities, and also supporting local economic growth by enhancing the facilities for local residents and visitors. This project is creating an international standard conference facility, beautifully restored theatres and a major upgrade of the world-class tennis facilities at Devonshire Park, alongside a flagship new shopping centre extension. Together, these innovations will turn Eastbourne into a mecca for tourism, shopping and business.
The dramatic £85 million conversion of the Arndale Centre into The Beacon is now up and running. Already the nine-screen cinema complex is showcasing this summer’s blockbusters. A string of high-profile shops and boutiques are open for business, and stylish restaurants and cafes are springing up to refresh tourists, shoppers and cinema goers. In total, the 170,000 square foot scheme will bring an additional 22 new retail units, around 300 extra car parking
spaces, seven restaurants and a ninescreen cinema to Eastbourne. Plans are also afoot to establish a Business Improvement District in the town centre. At the same time, the £54 million Devonshire Quarter project is also nearing completion. The redevelopment of Devonshire Park, renowned as the venue for the Eastbourne International tennis tournament, will create a premier conference and cultural destination, as well as delivering major improvements

to the international tennis facilities. The new Welcome Building, with its conference halls, break-out and hospitality areas, was completed in time to greet this year’s tennis players and spectators. This eco-friendly building will soon have a café and an attractive plaza that provides a gateway to the freshly-renovated theatres, the soon-tobe refurbished Winter Gardens and the celebrated Towner Art Gallery. Furthermore, not far from the town centre at Kingfisher Drive,

the £6.5 million extension to the Langley Shopping Centre is due to open soon; introducing an improved layout, a resurfaced car park, thirteen new shops and a 24-hour gym. As well as this, the centre will house the Langley Community Library, which has been resurrected through the efforts of local volunteers; using space generously donated free by the centre’s management team. And it’s not as if Eastbourne isn’t already a hotbed of activity; from 1518 August, Eastbourne pier provides the backdrop for the annual four-day ‘Airbourne’ event – one of the world's biggest free seafront air show. Featuring fast jets, aerobatic displays, helicopters,
parachutists and much more besides, this year’s headline display team are the Breitling Jets from France. The Eastbourne and Lewes Walking Festival runs from Friday 20 until Sunday 29 September, offering a wide variety of guided and self-led walks that allow walkers to discover more about the culture, history, and landscapes of East Sussex. Situated between the pier and the Wish Martello Tower, the 1930s bandstand is the busiest in Britain; with fireworks and proms every Wednesday and shows every Friday, Saturday and Sunday until the end of October – featuring everything from top tribute acts to military bands. A large beer festival takes place in October in the

Play safe The beach is a smashing place to be on a lovely summer’s day, but there are dangers to be aware of. Curtis Mays, the Assistant Seafront Manager for Lewes and Eastbourne tells us what to look out for

ummer is finally here and with another scorcher forecasted to last over the next couple of months it’s the perfect excuse to head to the beach! We want you to enjoy your time at the beach but it can be a dangerous place. Each year, beach lifeguards attend hundreds of incidents just because people ignore safety information or don’t take the right precautions. It’s very easy to stay safe if you just follow these simple steps:
Swim with a friend – Always go swimming with someone else, and tell another person where you are going before you set off. This way, if one of you gets into trouble, they can go and get help.
Take advice – Before getting in the sea, read the signs, check the flags or ask lifeguards about the best places to swim, and anything to be aware of. Flags with red and yellow on
Take care – The sea is very deep and even in the summer, open water around the UK is cold! Only confident swimmers should get in past their depth, keep an eye on the

tides and waves as you could be pulled out deeper than you expect. Don’t swim straight after eating or if you’ve drunk alcohol, and avoid swimming near groynes and piers.

Know what to do in an emergency – If you do get into difficulty in the water, lay on your back, stay calm and kick your legs, shout for help and wave periodically but otherwise keep your hands in the water to help you stay afloat. If you see someone in need of rescue, make sure you call emergency services before you attempt to help. If you get into trouble too then that’s two people who will need rescuing. Call 999 or 112 and ask for the coastguard, or if there are some in the immediate vicinity, inform the lifeguards. Do not put yourself at risk too. There are courses and classes you can take to be able to help in these situations but if you are not qualified, it is safer to wait for the experts. Despite all of the above, the biggest danger most of you will encounter on the beach this year is the sun! With a range of immediate or long-term health effects, sun exposure is best avoided wherever possible. In Eastbourne we have an easy phrase that we teach the kids; ‘Slip, Slap, Slop!’. To make sure you don’t suffer from sun burn, heat exhaustion or worse, you should slip on a t-shirt, slap on a hat and slop on some sunblock before going out in the sun. Drink plenty of water and wear sunglasses offering 100% UV protection as well. Have fun! l

In the course of a year, over 100 people with disabilities are supported with long-term care, respite breaks, day care and rehabilitation therapies. “Replacing archaic toilets and showers is not a glamorous project,” says Sandie Foster, Chaseley’s Head of Fundraising. “It doesn’t inspire, but in real terms this is a very basic requirement fundamental to everyone’s daily routine and living experience.” The fundraising events organised around Airbourne will help towards raising some of the £115,000 needed funds to improve the bathing facilities. Escape to the beach and watch your worries float away… Simply replace with sun, sea and fun, says Lisa de Silva

espite our unpredictable weather, we all like to be beside the seaside. Come wind, rain or shine, a bucket and spade, warm sand underfoot, a paddle in the sea, ice cream and fish and chips on the beach, is what British summers are made for. If you’re planning a trip to one of our glorious beaches this summer, we’ve put together some ideas to keep you and your family amused. So, with sun protection, sunglasses and sunhats at the ready, here’s our guide for fun in the sun. While you don’t really need much equipment for a great day out at the beach, do take a bucket and spade.
Hours of fun can be had building sandcastles with seawater moats, digging out boat-shaped holes and partially burying willing friends and family. In fact, sand art is a wonderful activity to unleash your creativity. You can make almost anything moulded from wet sand and embellish your creations with shells, small pebbles, tumbled smooth pieces of coloured glass and seaweed.
The best place to look for fossils is in the loose material washed up by the sea If you’re part of a large group and there is plenty of room, the beach is a great venue for bat and ball games like cricket and rounders. Otherwise, kite flying, shell collecting and skimming stones provide easy and enjoyable entertainment. For water
babies, paddling, splashing and swimming in the sea is a real treat. To enhance the experience, take a face mask and snorkel and see if you can spot small shoals of fish. Or if the surf is up, there’s lots of fun to be had on a boogie board. Once the tide has gone out, you can fish for marine life in the rock pools. Take a bucket and net or just a small white container and scout for sea anemones, hermit and shore crabs, starfish, limpets and interesting seaweeds. Do put back anything you find once you’ve had a chance to examine it. You can also take photographs of what you see which will help you to identify individual species once you get home. Another fun activity is fossil hunting. The best place to look for fossils is in the loose material washed up by the sea. Look out for pebbles with regular lines, marks and patterns which are all easier to spot on wet stones than dry, so focus your search on the shoreline. But if living creatures are more your thing, take some binoculars and indulge in some bird spotting. Terns, gulls, gannets, cormorants and kittiwakes all frequent our southern beaches and it’s fun to keep a running log of the sea birds you spy. Finally, end the day watching the sun sink slowly below the horizon with a warming bag of fish and chips. Beats the Mediterranean any day! l

Lifeguarding Lessons for Kids in Eastbourne School Summer Holidays

The Eastbourne Beach Lifeguard team will be teaching youngsters how to stay safe on the beach and in the sea this summer, as part of the fun Tyro Lifeguard course being held during school holidays. Led by the qualified and experienced team, the course provides youngsters aged 8-14 with first aid training, a guide to beach and personal safety plus an introduction to basic lifeguarding, all of which will equip them with essential skills they need to enjoy time spent on or near the water. Sessions last 3 hours at either 10am or 2pm, from the Lifeguard Station close to the Wish Tower. There are four levels that cover a range of different activities both on the beach and in the water. All activities are subject to change depending on the weather and sea conditions. Children need to be able to swim 100 metres unaided, swim wear (or preferably a thin wet suit) and towel are both essentials in order to take part. Courses run until 30 August priced at £18 per session or £60 for 4 sessions. THE HASTINGS
Tapestry
Twenty-two embroiderers worked for 10 months to complete the project, which consists of 27 panels, each being 2.7m wide and 90cm high (9x3ft). The finished tapestry was 84m (275 feet) in length. Though less well known than its illustrious predecessor from Bayeux, the Hastings Tapestry is also a substantial piece of work. The Bayeux Tapestry is 70m (230 feet) long, and 50cm (20 inches) high, though it is 900 ack in 1965, with the years older. President Macron of France has announced the Bayeux Tapestry will leave French shores for the first time, to be loaned to the British Museum, but not before 2022 at the earliest. When you buy a car, you wouldn’t dream of not getting it serviced, replacing the parts that suffer wear and tear, and it should be the same with your home. “Besides, it gives me the chance to try out new ideas and paint shades,” she continues, “and I’m about to tackle our bedroom and the hallway again; but I always stick with neutral shades that flow naturally from the colours in other rooms. If you travel, or shop around online, you’ll see you don’t have to spend a huge amount to get an original piece, although some works you might feel are worth more of an investment. One of our favourites is the horse sculpture in the sitting room; it’s by Nic Fiddian-Green who was inspired to start sculpting by the Elgin Marbles, the casts of which were on display as a frieze at the venue where we had our wedding reception, so we feel a special connection to Nic’s work.”

Since she and her husband became the custodians of this former Victorian coach house, Lulu has not just maintained a high standard of décor; there was an awful lot of work needed to update the property before it could become the effortlessly elegant home it is now, as Lulu recalls: “From the first moment we viewed it with a local agent, we appreciated its solid bones, high ceilings and good-sized rooms that would allow us to entertain with ease, just like the London home we were leaving behind to escape city life; but having been converted in the 1960s, we could see that the interior of our new home had been left in a midcentury time warp.” Despite having two young daughters at the time, the couple were determined to renovate the house within the first couple of years. Along with updating all the essentials, such as the plumbing, electrics, and the décor in the original parts of the house, they also constructed a two-storey extension on the site of an old garage. This gave them two additional bedrooms

BAMBOO Not just for giant pandas – bamboo is an astonishing plant that could help save the planet, argues Flo Whitaker
T
here is no plant more astounding than bamboo. It grows on every continent, save for Antarctica, and is a plant that even non-gardeners can instantly recognise, yet, because of its bewildering diversity, it has not been widely studied. The more we learn, the more extraordinary it seems; it is a paradox of a plant. Bamboo is superlight and also super-strong. Its woven fibres are softer than cotton, yet its tensile strength rivals steel – in some countries, bamboo is used to reinforce concrete. Some varieties can grow 1 metre per day, attain 50 metres in height and create vast forests over 1,000s of acres, while others reach maturity at just a few centimetres high and can easily be held in the palm of one hand. In evolutionary terms, bamboo is a late-developer and has only been around for about 30 million years. It is a member of the grass family; a huge and diverse group of plants. Apart from fungi, grasses are the most successful and widespread plants on earth. Bamboo’s natural habitats occur mostly in Asia, Africa and South America, but it is extremely versatile and thrives pretty much wherever humans plant it. There are over 1,200 identified species of bamboo and it is thought there are many more yet to be discovered. In recent years you will have

noticed bamboo products appearing in shops. When processed, bamboo fibres resemble luxuriously soft cotton wool and their natural antibacterial properties means they are ideally suited for the manufacture of socks, sportswear, nappies and, most appropriately, gardening gloves! Bamboo is also finding its way into our homes, not just in the guise of traditional-style conservatory furniture. It is used to make laminated flooring, loo seats, doors, window blinds and kitchen worktops. Bamboo can be pressed and steamed into shape without losing its strength. It is an eco-friendly choice for takeaway-style cutlery, plates and cups; making lightweight, portable items that can be used multiple times
Bamboo is a great architectural garden plant that adds structure and vertical impact and will harmlessly break down into compost when they are eventually sent to landfill. Planning your summer holiday? Your suitcase may have a rigid outer shell made from bamboo. Your swimsuit and beach towel may also contain bamboo fibres and your flip-flops may have hard-wearing soles manufactured from compressed bamboo. Some laptops and mobile phones have bamboo cases. take root wherever they touch the soil, so it’s advisable to keep runner-types confined to a pot. Utilitarian black plastic pots aren’t much to look at, but they have their uses. Plant a bamboo into a large black plastic pot, then stand it on the soil surface, with a pot saucer underneath to prevent roots escaping. Surrounded by other plants, the black pot will ‘disappear’, giving the visual impression of a bamboo growing in the border without the worry of it running out of control. Bamboo is especially suited to a patio setting. It will quickly
create a privacy screen and it imparts a gentle, restful quality when it rustles in a breeze. Bamboo can be used to create ‘living sculpture’ arches, tunnels and children’s dens, but you’ll need to maintain a strict trimming/shaping regime. Be warned, this could be a fortnightly task during the growing season. You’ll need lots of plants for a living structure and it’s often costeffective to purchase one large plant, then split it up. Bamboo is a tough customer; your weapons of choice
should include thick gardening gloves and an old kitchen knife, preferably one with a serrated blade. Remove the plant from its pot and cut the root ball into sections, ensuring each section has a strong, young shoot attached. Position them 30 cms apart, with the new shoots just below the soil surface. Play dens look visually great when planted through rough grass. Frequent mowing will weaken wandering shoots and help to curb their rampaging tendencies. Bamboo is commercially harvested using a coppicing system. The stems are cut at ground level, allowing the plant to quickly regenerate and, because the roots are not disturbed, there is minimal soil erosion. It releases approximately 30% more oxygen into the environment than trees and its staggering growth rate means that a juvenile shoot can become a mighty roofing truss within 3 years. Bamboo is extraordinary. You can bend it, stretch it, carve it, press it, weave it, paint it, dye it, burn it – and eat it! It is a plant that could save the world. l

Our second long walk of the summer is set in beautiful downland countryside, and passes six ancient churches. Robert Veitch took his nephew Joe, and Joe’s friend Sydney along for the adventure
W
alk south from Berwick Station for 50m, turning right at the Vanguard Way sign, emerging via an open gate into a field of rapeseed. Hawthorn on the right evolved into privet, then woodland, while Joe and Sydney discussed the merits of their favourite sports. At the lamppost the track leads straight ahead, then turns right at the fingerpost. Walk through the graveyard of Selmeston Church to the gates, emerging at the road. Turn left, along The Street to the junction with the A27 and cross it with great care. Take the footpath to the right of the wooden garage, and hug the left side of the field all the way to the road. Turn left, then 30m later turn right by the fingerpost and cross the stile. Wander downhill, through the gate, then uphill around the field boundary to a pair of kissing gates. Turn right by the first gate into the wheat field, then after 150m turn left at the fingerpost, through the kissing gate, then diagonally uphill across the field to the gate by the trellis. Beyond the adjacent field and road, follow the gravel path from the lamppost towards Alciston Church. Turn left before the steps, and follow the flint wall. Beyond the metal gates and stile enter the pea field to the right. Make a beeline for the distant church spire. The path turns 90° left then 90° right and continues in a straight line to the concrete track. Turn right at the roundabout, then left into the church car park. Follow the hollyhock-lined path to St Michaels and

Andrews, Alfriston will appear to the right (a worthwhile diversion). “Lovely flint architecture,” noted Sydney as Joe charged ahead. Continue east, crossing the Cuckmere River then follow the path to Lullington Road. Take the gate to the right of Great Meadow Barn. 150m beyond the second gate, pass through the gap in the trees, then turn right and amble uphill diagonally between the crops, to the hedge, through the adjacent field, over the stile, to the track and road. Cross the road and follow the South Downs Way past the covered reservoir, around to the right, then to the left and over the summit of Windover Hill (176m). At the weighted gate, take the left fork, uphill alongside the fence to the summit of Wilmington Hill (214m), the pinnacle of the walk and a panorama that thrills.

Turn right and follow the green carpet downhill between the corn, then across the sleeper bridge, through the next field, eventually joining a track, that ends at a crossroads. Continue straight on, down West Street, past the crucifix to the square. Then along the High Street for 125m, turning left down the twitten by the brown sign. St

Continue down the other side, descending towards the distant A27. Where the chalky path swerves into a hairpin, cross the bank on the left, then the stile. Ramble over the brow, then downhill towards the chalk path. Bear left, its level walking, then take the downhill fork on the right. At the gate beneath the Long Man, turn right and aim for the road where the path continues, adjacent to the tarmac, emerging opposite a car park. Turn right, then after 150m open the gate into the graveyard of St Mary and St Peter, Wilmington. We paused at the Yew and wondered how the area might have looked when it was planted. Beyond the graveyard, turn right, following the drive between the houses where it slims to a path, which zig-zags to the road. Turn left, then left again at the red phone box. Veer left after 75m. Once over the bridge, continue through the small oak wood to the kissing gate. Cross the field, then through the two kissing gates before arriving at Milton Street. Turn right towards the A27, which should be crossed with great care. After 75m turn left by the telegraph pole, then after three metal gates a large field appears. Keep left, along the boundary for 200m, then walk through the gate, turn right, and follow the field
periphery all the way to the stile in the corner. Beyond the scrub, grass and reeds and stile is the railway crossing; go across with great care. Keep to the left side of the next field, downhill into the dip, then veering left as the path eases uphill, staying close to the hedge, over the brow and downhill to a metal gate. 5m past this gate a gap in the hedge leads to a stile. Over the stile, head west, following the field boundary all the way to another stile, then the road. 200m along the driveway opposite cross the stile on the left by the Wealdway sign. Joe was starting to flag, but with Sydney’s encouragement he found new reserves of energy. Aim for the spire across the field, passing over a stile, across the paddock, and over a bridge, along the way. Joan

Cundell’s gate guards the entrance to St Pancras Arlington. It’s the final church of the day. Turn 180° and walk over the previous bridge, then bear right, towards the stile. Use the reverberating metal bridge to cross the Cuckmere River. Veer right, then left around the scrub, before climbing the embankment to find a suitable entry point onto the dam. Turn left and walk alongside Arlington Reservoir. Bear left at the end, then 120m later turn right into the field via a kissing gate. Follow the path through this field and the three that follow, back to Berwick through ripening corn – a yellow brick road of sorts – and to journeys end. “Thank the Lord, I’ve seen enough churches for one day,” was Joe’s final comment, while Sydney reflected, “A really solid walk, lots of lovely scenery, an enjoyable day out.” Thanks to St Michael and All Angels, Berwick for the inspiration. t this time of year, gardens play a significant role in many people’s lives and I am no exception. I’m lucky as ours is a reasonable size, and, being country dwellers, we get an interesting assortment of wildlife. There are birds of differing shapes and sizes, with the bird food, supplied by ‘Her Indoors’ to entice them in, providing crunchy little snacks for me when I feel so disposed. There are also rabbits to chase, the odd grass snake and hedgehog for me to avoid, and for the first time the other morning, a deer outside the kitchen window. ‘Her Indoors’ was rather excited by this initially, up to the point the deer started grazing on her herbaceous perennials, then it was not quite so dear and was ushered gently back over the fence from whence it came. I don’t know why I wasn’t allowed outside to help with the ‘ushering’, I bet I would have made it vacate our outside room more quickly than ‘Her Indoors’. We should play to our strengths.

My predecessor and boss, Rolo, used to be a master of food theft, and no unattended plate, beer glass or casual ice cream was safe from his attentions. I prefer to deploy my charm and appealing eyes to wheedle food out of ‘Them Indoors’. ‘Him Indoors’ is a better target for my persuasion as he doesn’t have to take me to the vet’s for my annual weigh-in. I’m quite a big Border Terrier so I’m 58 SUSSEX LIVING | August 2019
at a natural disadvantage in the weighing department. And in spite of the Boss’s fine example of never standing still on the scales for long enough to give an accurate reading, I’m too obliging and sit down comfortably; never a good tactic. Still, I like to think I use a few calories in the garden. Firstly, there’s the supervising of ‘Them Indoors’ burning off theirs. I lie, snoozing and yawning, where
I can keep an eye on them, making sure there’s no slacking in the digging, pruning, grass cutting and weeding. Then there’s guarding duties. The dog next door, Ben, is a Leonburger, a very hairy, large breed, about the size of a small donkey. He suffers from illusions that he’s in charge locally, a view that I regularly challenge in exchanges under our boundary fence. Border Terriers might be small in stature, but we are mighty in attitude. And when we’ve finished outside, there’s always TV gardens to view. ‘Her Indoors’ is soothed by the voice of Monty Don on Gardeners’ World every Friday evening and she’s usually asleep before ‘jobs for the weekend’. Still, I wake her up with growling and barking at Monty’s dogs, Nelly and Nigel. I always check around the back of the TV just to make sure they’re sticking to their own patch. My garden belongs to me, and ‘Them Indoors’ of course. l

THE LITTLE GIRL IN THE RADIATOR
by Martin Slevin (AuthorHouse) It sounds as though a true story about Alzheimer’s is going to be dreadful, but somehow Martin Slevin manages to see the humour in it as well as the tragedy. His mother, Rose, was very fortunate to have a son as loving and devoted as the author, and the first paragraph of the book gives an idea of the slant the narrative will take: Alzheimer’s Disease is the only medical condition that I know
Rose is convinced her sister Peggy is responsible for cutting the sleeves off her clothes of which affects the family of the patient more than it appears to affect the patient themselves. Rose is convinced that her sister Peggy, who died some years previously, is the person responsible for cutting the sleeves off her clothes. She is also quite sure that there is a little girl living in the radiator, who can’t get out. Martin gradually realises that her stories about cowboys herding cattle down the street outside and a plane crashing into the front garden are actually films she has been watching on the television. Fiction and reality have become one and the same. In the end, he has to find a care home for her, and these vary from enlightened to appalling. For anyone touched by Alzheimer’s this is a must, and highly educational for the rest of us as well. 60 SUSSEX LIVING | August 2019
by Lucy Clarke (HarperCollins) Elle, a published writer, seems to have it all: a dream home on a clifftop in Cornwall, a husband and a supportive sister living nearby. But in reality, life isn’t going as well as it might appear to others. The house is very isolated and a bit creepy, she’s nearly broke, she’s split from her husband and she’s not on top of her next deadline. So she lets out her dream home via Airbnb to make some money whilst she’s away in France for two weeks, being a guest speaker at a writing retreat – but when she gets back things aren’t quite the way they were. Someone has been in her locked study, because a glass paperweight has been chipped and the shard has found its way into her

MAISIE HITCHINS – THE CASE OF THE SPILLED INK
by Holly Webb (Stripes Publishing) I was pleasantly surprised by this book. It’s set in Victorian London, and Maisie longs to be a proper detective, but isn’t doing too badly on her own. She lives with her grandmother, and her faithful puppy called Eddie. There are a lot of Maisie Hitchins books, aimed at children from seven upwards, so once a child is addicted they can keep going until they grow out of them. In this story, Maisie’s friend Alice is sent away to boarding school. Before long there is a mystery, when possessions start to go missing, and Maisie formulates a clever plan to don a disguise and find the thief. The only clue is an inkwell spilled across Alice’s desk, and a trail of suspicious paw prints. The ending is clever and satisfying, and although the culprit is unmasked it’s not an

Snippets of information about Victorian London can be picked up along the way – even the titles can be intriguing. The first book in the series, The Case of the Stolen Sixpence, is a good example. I can imagine most children today asking, “What’s a sixpence?”

MOROCCAN MEATBALLS
The Moroccan ground spice mixture, ras el hanout, used in these little meatballs is typically made with cumin and coriander seeds, ginger, peppercorns, cloves, allspice and cinnamon. It lends a certain aromatic fragrance to savoury dishes, particularly tagines, but also enhances sweet dishes, such as an orange and date salad scented with orange flower water and mint. Pork can be substituted for lamb, although it’s not a meat that’s normally used in Morocco INGREDIENTS For the Moroccan meatballs 100g minced lamb, or pork 1 spring onion, chopped 2 tsp ras el hanout 2 tbsp chopped coriander 2 tbsp white sesame seeds Salt & freshly ground black pepper
METHOD Mix all the ingredients together for the meatballs, divide into 20 and roll into balls between the palms of your hands. Sprinkle the cornflour on a tray and roll the balls in it to lightly coat.

The joints are very unusual in their make-up, function and symptoms they can cause if they are upset. Although they are proper joints with ‘non-stick’ cartilage and lubricating fluid, they are not designed to move like a knee or shoulder joint. Instead they have very little movement at all. They transfer your weight from the upper body into the pelvic girdle. Because of this, the joint is continually under stress, and so when upset the joint can sometimes not settle down naturally and can cause ongoing pain, not only in the lower back but also into other areas. Because of its position pain from the SIJ can be felt in other regions and can give confusing symptoms. I often call it ‘The Great Mimicker’! It can give pain in the area of the hip joint, the testicles (in men) and even nervelike pain into the leg. I commonly see patients with SIJ problems who have been investigated for hip joint arthritis or sciatica and nothing has been found. Diagnosing SIJ pain can be a challenge; a key thing is awareness. Pain centred in the lower back and off to one side should raise suspicions, especially if the pain is also felt in the areas I mentioned earlier. Pain on changing positions such as getting out of a chair or turning in bed is characteristic. Activities which ‘jar’ the joint such as tennis or squash can also provoke symptoms.

ow back pain is very common. Almost 80% of adults will experience an episode of debilitating back pain at least once in their lives. Usually this episode will settle itself with minimal intervention: activity reduction or modification, some antiinflammatories if tolerated or some physical therapy. All can help with this. Most people put low back pain down to the spine itself. ‘Disc problems’, ‘arthritic joints’ and ‘spondylitis’ are commonly expressed diagnoses. But over a third of low back pain comes not from the spine itself but from the sacroiliac joints. And yet many people, including health professionals do not know much about the joint or the symptoms it can create! The sacroiliac joint’s or ‘SIJ’s’ are the junction between the lower spine and the pelvic bones, one on the left and one on the right. 68 SUSSEX LIVING | August 2019

Examination by an experienced health professional is important. There are a number of specific tests for SIJ pain, though not always conclusive. X-rays and even MRI scans are not very useful in diagnosing SIJ pain however, so a normal MRI scan does not rule the diagnosis out. Often SIJ pain will settle itself, but if the pain is severe and ongoing, there are other options: if you suspect you have SIJ pain, do speak with a health professional with experience of the condition. It is a very treatable condition, and many people suffer unnecessarily with it. l

ou may have heard of acid peels or face or body lotions containing AHAs or BHAs, but what do they do and why would you put them on your skin? There are two types of Hydroxy Acids – Alpha Hydroxy Acids and Beta Hydroxy Acids – the key difference is that AHAs dissolve in water and BHAs dissolve in oil. All of them are derived from plants and differ in chemical structure, from small to large molecules. With technical advancements they can all be made synthetically. Normally the synthetic versions are used in skincare. AHA Glycolic acid – from sugar cane Lactic acid – sour milk Malic acid – apples Citric acid – citrus fruit Tartaric acid – grape wine Mandelic acid – almonds BHA Salicylic acid SHOULD I WORRY ABOUT PUTTING ACID ON MY SKIN? The truth is we are surrounded by acid and alkaline substances: black coffee (acid), saliva (acid) or bleach (alkali) are easy examples. Our skin is about

–YES REALLY! Alpha and Beta Hydroxy Acids – what are they and why should you care? Kate Cowan gives us the pros and cons of these smoothing beauty products 5.5 so a little acidic. Water is 7 and neutral. The key to a successful product is scientific – you need enough acid to work but at a certain PH level. It’s not enough to have a product
containing AHAs, you want to be sure that it is at the right PH level too. Think of it like this: % of AHA/BHA + perfect PH level = efficient and proven product.

WHAT DO THEY DO? They penetrate and exfoliate the top layer of skin (the stratum corneum), stimulate skin cell renewal, (great for anti-aging products) and resurface the skin making it smoother, softer and ‘radiant’ looking. They help stimulate the growth of collagen and elastin giving skin elasticity and suppleness. They are humectants – drawing water into the skin to keep it moisturised. The best AHAs for penetrating are the ones with small molecules; glycolic and lactic acid are loved by the beauty industry. Although the larger molecules (malic, tartaric, citric or mandelic) are accepted as being gentler on the skin because they do not penetrate so deeply and are used by many anti-aging creams and as anti-oxidants. BHAs are oil soluble and salicylic acid is no different – it penetrates the sebum-rich pores of the skin, exfoliating the pore lining which loosens blockages and allows the oil to flow out more freely. It’s popular with those with spots or acne. It is also antiinflammatory and mildly antibacterial. BE AWARE Skin needs to get used to AHAs and BHAs and they can cause redness or irritation. They should be kept out of eyes and tried and tested before use. Although you can mix AHAs and BHAs, it is recommended to not use both at exactly the same time i.e. use one in the morning and one in the evening. Go easy and allow your skin time to get used to your products. Most importantly, they make skin more sensitive to the sun and it’s very important to wear sunscreen – this is because they have removed the top layer of ‘protective’ dead skin, so the sun is reaching new skin immediately which has no resilience. l

ith much of my working life spent inside a cosy studio looking out on the wider world, it is great when I get the opportunity to get out and about and meet our listeners. The Awards are always an important date in the calendar for us – a chance to recognise some amazing groups, organisations and individuals from across the Mid Sussex area that have achieved big things over the last 12 months. selflessly to support local charities, or individuals who have shown incredible courage and bravery in the face of adversity. There are often plenty of heart-wrenching stories to tell and many truly inspirational people to recognise. From a personal perspective I always take an active interest in the Top Teacher Award and the Young Person of the Year Award. As a father, I am well aware of the impact a great teacher can have on the lives of our children, and those I meet always seem such a dedicated and caring group of professionals, always willing to give that little bit extra to ensure the children within their care get to fulfil their potential. If you know of a teacher worthy of recognition, please

Equally our children are so often caring, selfless, positive and inspiring – again if you know of a young person that really has done something great this year make sure you let us know.
