Peter d’Aguilar paid a visit to Hailsham to find out all about its rich history and sample the beautiful area for himself. With lots to see and do, he found a vibrant town worth investigating

he busy rural market town of Hailsham sits seven miles inland from the south coast, overlooking the marshland of the Pevensey Levels and bordered by the South Downs National Park and the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It is the largest town in the Wealden district of East Sussex, with a population of over twenty thousand. Referenced in the Domesday Book of 1086, the town’s roots stretch back as

far as Neolithic times and its proximity to the sea attracted Ancient Briton, Anglo Saxon, Roman and Norman settlers. The Parish Church in High Street and many of its other buildings date back to the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. In 1252 Henry III granted the town a Market Charter. Today, there is a monthly farmers’ market featuring local food and craftwork, a stall market every Friday, a street market every Saturday and a weekly

livestock market - the only one still operating in Sussex. The town’s architecture is a harmonious mixture of ancient and modern. Hailsham Museum and Heritage Centre in Blackman’s Yard is run by members of the Hailsham Historical and Natural History Society and offers a snapshot of the town's past through photographs, artefacts and memorabilia. Rope-making is Hailsham's traditional industry.

As well as nautical ropes, local manufacturers supplied ropes for public hangings in Britain and its colonies. Hailsham now has a brand-new, purposebuilt rope factory and warehouse on a site that has been used for rope-making for over two hundred years. Hailsham has a variety of local and national shops, restaurants and supermarkets. The High Street, George Street and St Mary's Walk are the main retail areas. The Quintins shopping centre near the Vicarage Field precinct opened in the late 1980s and is named after the eminent Tory politician Quintin Hogg - who later became Lord Hailsham. Following a government-commissioned report compiled by Mary Portas, TV’s Queen of Shops, Hailsham’s Town Council and Chamber of Commerce set up the Hailsham Forward Town Team to come up with initiatives for revitalising the town centre. Its main aims are to boost the local economy, protect the environment, improve infrastructure and safeguard health, wellbeing and quality of life. Hailsham Forward has recently been accepted as a Community Interest Company. Hailsham is a vibrant centre for sport, arts, culture and leisure activities. Hailsham Active was set up in 1995 to unite sports clubs and societies within

outdoor bowling club based at the rear of the complex. Hailsham also has an adventure park which offers a range of activities including a ski and snowboard centre, birds of prey, tractor and trailer rides, crazy golf and a boating lake. Arlington Stadium, on the outskirts of Hailsham, has hosted speedway racing for more than fifty years. The Cuckoo

The Common Pond in Bellbanks Road has been a focal point and jewel in Hailsham’s crown for many years the district, provide support for member clubs and to promote sport within the town. Hailsham Town Football Club, known as The Stringers because of the town's rope-making history, plays in the first division of the Southern Combination Football League. Established in 1871, Hailsham Cricket Club is one of the oldest in East Sussex. Maurice Thornton Playing Field provides additional facilities for junior and senior football, as well as stoolball and athletics. There is a leisure centre which has facilities that include a gym, ten-pin bowling and a swimming pool with a flume and water slide, with an

Trail, which offers safe cycling, walking and riding along the disused railway line, passes through Hailsham on its way from Heathfield to Eastbourne. Hailsham Country Park incorporates woodland, an open field area, two ponds and a lake - where fishing is available in season. A water course skirts the open field area and there are all-weather footpaths throughout the park. and around the Hailsham district. Hailsham Pavilion is a Grade II listed cinema and concert hall built in 1921. It closed as a cinema in 1965 and served as a bingo hall until 1987. Refurbishment began in 1993 and it opened again in 2000. Summerheath Hall is home to Hailsham Theatres, a group of amateur dramatic players who have been staging musical and drama productions since the early 1930s. Since opening in 2004, Gallery North in North Street has showcased the work of over two hundred artists; as well as hosting art workshops, courses and events including Hailsham’s first Arts Festival. The Stone in Vicarage Road was originally built in 1320 and was once owned by Cardinal Wolsey. Others include the Old Brewery, Fleur de Lys, Inglenook, The Grange, Cortlandt, in George Street and the much-loved Michelham Priory. Three of Hailsham’s pubs are situated in the three streets that make up the triangle of the town centre, which also features several members' clubs. The other two traditional pubs are located in Station Road and South Road. Each October around three thousand people attend the town’s Guy Fawkes celebrations, organised by the Hailsham Bonfire Society. Hailsham also holds a range of popular Christmas markets. l

Tucked away at the foot of the South Downs is a small church illuminated with murals from the residents of Charleston. Robert Veitch investigates

everend Peter Blee is a quietly spoken, thoughtful man who appears to be at one with his environment. His church, St Michaels and All Angels in Berwick lies atop a tiny hill at the end of a flint walled passageway. It’s over 900 years old and Grade I listed. To wander around the churchyard is to amble peacefully through history. At the outbreak of World War II, the church interior was typical of the time, namely whitewashed walls and stone. Decorating church interiors with art works had become largely forgotten after The Reformation. It was Bishop Bell of Chichester who commissioned the artists, Duncan Grant, Vanessa Bell and Quentin Bell in 1941. As members of the Bloomsbury Set, the American Dorothy Parker remarked, “They lived in squares, painted in circles and loved in triangles.” Though viewed as ‘avante garde’ their Berwick work would be traditional, a ‘decorative scheme’ creating an environment rather than a series of paintings. The art reflects the local landscape, people, and a way of life under threat at the time. Vanessa Bell, the sister of Virgina Woolf noted, “What a wartime occupation, it needed Hitler to bring such things to pass.” The plasterboard appears to be 16 SUSSEX LIVING | December 2018

standard 8x4 sheets, but their origin remains unknown. Peter told me painting took place at Charleston, after which the boards were brought to Berwick and secured to wallmounted battens. Look closely and plasterboard nails can still be seen. During the War, several leaded glass windows were destroyed by a bomb, which detonated nearby. Replaced with clear plate glass, it adds a charming other-worldliness to the place.

Vanessa Bell’s, ‘The Annunciation’ – the meeting between angel Gabriel and the Virgin Mary, featured her daughter posing as Mary. On the opposite wall is ‘The Nativity’, also by Vanessa Bell. It was painted after Virginia Woolf had taken that fateful walk into the River Ouse and her brother Julian had been killed in the Spanish Civil War. Mary appears lost in her thoughts. In the background is Mount Caburn.

To secure the art for future generations, the church interior requires a stable environment. The plan is to install roof insulation and sustainable under floor heating utilising boreholes. “Humidity control is key to controlling the environment and avoiding fluctuations,” according to Peter. A failure to restore the paintings will see them deteriorate beyond recognition; even today flaking paint is clearly visible, highlighting the thin line between art and extinction. Peter indicated wax and varnish from preservation attempts in the 1960s needs removing because it’s proved more harmful than helpful. Salt eruptions in the paint exist, whilst evidence of mould and dirt need eliminating.

Peter is keen to publicise the fundraising plans for the ‘Saving Berwick Project.’ A National Lottery application is now in it’s second phase. If the £600,000 grant is approved the church will still need to raise £250,000 themselves… of which a heart warming £100,000 has already been donated. Preservation works will be in situ, on scaffolding platforms, which might make the Sunday Service unique for the congregation. The church has around 10,000 visitors each year. “Our conservation project will invite small groups of vulnerable and disadvantaged individuals to enjoy this quiet and reflective place,” Peter revealed.

Hilarious multi-award winning impressionist Bobby Davro is as much a part of the festive season as turkey and tinsel. Tim Saunders talks to him about pantos, camping and everything in between

he longstanding star of pantomime stars as Idle Jack in Dick Whittington in Southampton this Christmas. “As a family comedian, it is so wonderful seeing everyone from kids through to grandparents being entertained by you,” he says. Dick Whittington tells the story of Richard Whittington, a wealthy merchant and later Lord Mayor of London (between 1354 and 1423). The legend describes his rise from poverty-stricken childhood with the fortune he made through the sale of his cat to a rat-infested country. A regular visitor to the South Coast, Bobby recalled when he was 16 spending a week literally chasing women in Sussex. “I went to stay on a holiday camp with my friends, getting drunk and generally getting up to no good. I got so sunburnt that I

couldn’t put my shoes on, I couldn’t even smile!” Well-known on the panto circuit Bobby has played Buttons in Cinderella, Scarecrow in The Wizard of Oz and appeared in Jack and the Beanstalk as well as Robin Hood. He has twice starred as Wishee Washee in Aladdin, once with Melinda Messenger. Pantomimes are no longer reserved for Christmas; Bobby has helped turn them into Easter extravaganzas too. Last Easter he starred in Beauty and the Beast with CBBC actress Dani Harmer, known for her portrayal of Tracy Beaker. In 1981 Bobby made his television debut, but his

in a severe reprimand. “I made an early impression at school, when I was caught mimicking my headmaster - a Harold Wilson sound-a-like I was given six of the best.” After leaving school, Bobby worked as a trainee manager in a large department store, where he was soon trying out more impressions and honing his talents as John Inman and Mrs Slocombe. His next job was in his father’s retail store, Davro Trading, named

In 2015 he starred in the comedy Not a Game for Boys where he played a London taxi driver. His personal life has made the pages of the tabloids. For a decade he

was married to former Page 3 model Trudi Jameson, from Sutton Coldfield, before divorcing in 2003. The couple have three children Brittany, Tierney and Marnie. He has battled depression but his friend the hypnotist Paul McKenna has helped him tackle it by tapping acupressure points with his fingers. He is very involved in charity fundraising, including for Kids ‘n’ Cancer, Care After Combat and Variety, and on December 10 2018, Bobby appears alongside Jim Davidson and Jethro in Legends to raise funds for Care After Combat. Bobby also helped launch a new charity bingo game to raise

funds for Variety. The funds raised from the new charity game boost the pledge made by The Bingo Association to raise £1m for Variety by the end of 2018. These funds are used to provide support to even more children through Sunshine Coaches, powered and sports wheelchairs, specialist and sensory equipment as well as funding a number of memorable days and outings for disabled and disadvantaged children across the UK. Bobby said: “As a long-standing

supporter of Variety, the children’s charity, I am delighted to help launch a new fundraising initiative that aims to raise £250,000 for Variety. I know what a difference these funds will make to the lives of children and young people throughout the UK.” Born in Ashford, Surrey on September 13, 1959, Bobby likes the music of Gilbert O’Sullivan. “I have played your new album constantly over the past few weeks,” he tweeted to

Bringing magazines and news to the sight-impaired, Wealden Talking News is at the forefront of innovation, as Peter d’Aguilar finds out

ack in 1975, Heathfield and District Talking Newspaper Association was a pioneer in providing audio news for the blind. In 1983 its founder, Ted Davis, set up National Talking News & Magazines to offer a subscription service across the UK. In 2013 the RNIB took over its management until financial problems and a reduction in listener numbers forced its closure three years later. Today, the dedicated volunteers of Wealden Talking News (WTN) are once more at the forefront of innovation by bringing mainstream magazines – free of charge – to the sight-impaired across Sussex. In 2017 WTN secured a £10,000 National Lottery grant to rejuvenate its recording studios in Heathfield and this, together with an influx of 30 SUSSEX LIVING | December 2018

‘polished’ readers from the recently closed RNIB studio, enabled the setting up of the new initiative under the dynamic leadership of Dianne Steele. A qualified nurse, midwife and chiropodist with a passion for digital communication, Dianne first started as a reader twenty-five years ago after the death of her husband. Today, supported by technical manager Mike Hollis and a dedicated team of volunteers, Dianne is busy spearheading the new Sussexwide Publications (SWP) initiative across both East and West Sussex. “Many local Talking News services are in decline or closing, due to the lack of local news reporting and advances

in treatment for the sight impaired,” explains Dianne. “WTN is once again leading the way, moving in the opposite direction and expanding!” WTN produces a memory stick containing four thirty-minute news editions gleaned from the local newspapers each week, plus another thirty minutes of general interest features. In addition, it is now offering monthly audio recordings of Sussex Living and Sussex Life magazines, as well as a compilation entitled ‘Listeners’ Sussex’. “While it’s great that medical science is reducing the number of people with sight impairment, there are still many – especially the very elderly – who feel isolated from the mainstream media,” says Dianne. “We have a wealth of talented readers generously giving their time, so we want as many people as possible to benefit. We are taking our message to the outside world by building links with local NHS Trusts, opticians, charities and clubs, as well as Sussex’s sight impairment officers.” “Our audience numbers are increasing steadily and the feedback we’re receiving is very encouraging,” says Dianne. “Listeners speak of WTN opening up their lives. We want to reach as wide a demographic as possible, so plans are afoot to broaden our material to cater for more diverse tastes. We are using radio ads and flyers to spread the word but, as our ways of communicating are limited, we are keen for friends and relations to pass on information.”

A Rustic SCANDI Christmas Decked out in a rustic Scandi style, Phil and Philippa Heath’s stone cottage in the Derbyshire countryside is a haven of understated Christmas charm

In an old stone cottage, nestled amongst thick woodland on the edge of the Peak District, lives the Heath family who start preparing for Christmas on the first day of December every year. “We absolutely love Christmas,” says Philippa, mum of the family. “Phil and I got married in December, and my birthday’s the week before Christmas, so it’s a very special time for our family. As soon as daylight appears, Phil and one of the boys head out to pick a tree, and twigs and branches that I make into decorations such as heart shapes, stars or reindeer that I then paint white.” The couple’s children, Jack, Tom, Joe and Bess, also love to make bits and bobs from spare timber. No room is left unadorned and this warm home is transformed into a rustic winter wonderland ready to celebrate the season. The interior of the Heath’s home is just as inventively decorated the rest of the year. With little spare cash, Phil and Philippa have made several pieces of furniture as well as collecting hand-me-downs, salvage finds and odd things dumped in skips and giving them clever make overs. “Good quality paint can work wonders,” says Philippa. “I’m constantly found with a paintbrush in my hand. Phil often jokes that he’s scared to stand still in case I paint him too.” When the couple first moved into the house in 1992 the building needed much more than a quick lick of paint. “It was in a dreadful state,” recalls Philippa, who had spent three years travelling around the world with Phil, a former merchant navy seaman. “We both grew up and have family near here, so when we were ready to settle in the UK to start

our own family, we focused our search on the local Derbyshire area.” Although the 1800s structure they found was damp and neglected, the setting was magical and immediately won them over. “Money was tight after paying for the house from our savings,” says Philippa, “and we had little left to pay for workmen so we had a go at most of the immediate repair work ourselves.” Whilst they were doing the repairs they knocked two of the three small bedrooms into one to make a decent master. Since that initial renovation, the couple have

gradually transformed the house as funds could be resaved and in between the arrival of each of the four children. The most dramatic change to the house was the two-storey extension, built by Phil in 2000 using reclaimed punched face stone to match the original cottage; this gave the family a larger kitchen diner and a spacious third bedroom above. As the boys have grown up, this bedroom has since been divided into two, bringing the total number of bedrooms up to four. “Jack needed his own space as he got older,” says Philippa. “At the same time, Bess said she didn’t want to feel completely separate from the family so asked if we would take out a wall in her room so she could see down over the stairs and into the kitchen. She may change her mind and want more privacy when she becomes a teenager herself though.” As well as all that structural work the house has had its floorboards stripped upstairs and salvaged

flooring laid downstairs; all the rooms have been replastered and the electrics and plumbing have been updated. Phil only called in the professionals for the latter two tasks, while he and Philippa have managed the rest and the decorating themselves. Understandably, having lived there for 21 years, the house has been redecorated a number of times. Philippa has recently moved away from chintzy cottage style to a cooler, more sophisticated Scandinavian feel. “Living in the countryside, with ducks and chickens, dogs, boots and wellies means we are never clean and tidy. But the lightness and brightness of Scandinavian style gives the illusion of cleanliness at least!” Visitors to this home can be certain it will look a little different each time they stop by, such is the way this family and their home continually evolve, and there is always another job or two on the wish list. “I like the idea of a fireplace in our bedroom,” says Philippa, “and there is a chimney we could open up; a picture window would give us a nice view of the woods from our bed too. Those are just dreams, though, more urgently we need to tackle the house roof, and the verandah, which needs maintenance to make it waterproof, and the garage needs to be made mouse

proof… We love our home, but that’s the reality of rural life I’m afraid, most of the time it’s not all that magical and romantic.” What will be magical are the festivities ahead. They have a large clan, so each Christmas they take turns to host around 20 family members, including eight youngsters. “It will be noisy and chaotic, but Phil and I look forward to time with the children and recapturing all those early days of sheer excitement and anticipation. I don’t think we’d ever forget to put a mince pie out for Santa and a carrot for Rudolph.” The children have their rituals too: they make a Christmas box filling it with their favourite decorations, uneaten gold coins and a letter to themselves for the following year. “It’s amazing for them to open up the box and read their letters to see just how they and life have changed in 12 months,” says Philippa. The house may be beautiful, the setting may be idyllic, but for the Heaths, it’s who they share time with that’s the most important thing at Christmas, and all year round. Snow SENTINELS From ancient talismanic figures to sparkly Christmas decorations, snowmen have always been with us. Flo Whitaker takes us on a journey back in time

hat does the word ‘snowman’ mean to you? Do you build them with your children or grandchildren? At Christmas, do you hang a snowman decoration on your tree, or place an illuminated snowman figure in your garden? Nowadays we associate snowmen with light-hearted fun but their origins lie elsewhere. Snowmen have been a part of our culture for thousands of years. The oldest surviving art in Europe can be found in cave paintings dating back to 35,000 BC. Ancient tools and cooking vessels give us more clues about this faraway world. Carved figures of humans and animals indicate early belief systems and rituals. These tantalising fragments can be viewed in museums, but a snowman is ephemeral. It leaves nothing behind, save for a puddle and a written or spoken history trail passed along the generations.

Our ancestors were highly attuned to the seasons. Winter, with its short hours of daylight, was a particular challenge. In a landscape populated with bears and wolves, great importance was placed on talismanic objects. Snowmen were first created as guardians and were constructed around the perimeter of the homestead to protect people and livestock. Made with outstretched, defensive twiggy arms, they were positioned with their backs facing the settlement. Their grotesque faces looked outwards in order to scare away animals and bad spirits lurking in the dangerous Wildwood.

A snowman is ephemeral. It leaves nothing behind, save for a puddle and a history trail passed along the generations The earliest known snowman image appears in an illuminated book, (circa 1380) held in the National Library of the Netherlands. In 1494, the 19-yearold Michelangelo was commissioned by Piero de’ Medici to build a snowman in his palace courtyard in Florence. From the Middle Ages, snow figures were constructed to honour

favoured monarchs and military heroes, or to create religious effigies. Unlike costly artist’s materials, snow is freely available and snow figures were also made to show dissent. Unpopular politicians, landowners and churchmen were lampooned in snow sculptures. Ordinary folk would vent their anger by kicking and punching the figures and, when gunpowder arrived on the scene, blowing them up! In Zurich, a springtime festival still occurs, whereby a snowman, (now made from fabric) is exploded to symbolise the end of winter. Our ancient ancestors would be mystified by us, but might see something of themselves in our shared ‘worshipping’ of snow deities. So, if you receive a Christmas card depicting a jolly snowman, pause for thought. That image of an icy winter sentinel has travelled through the ages. Snowmen are mysterious and transient. Commanded by the weather, they come – and they go. They are the stuff of dangerous politics, but are also a child’s plaything. They can be pro-establishment, or anarchic; religious or profane. They are shapeshifting, inscrutable time-travellers. If only they could talk – what stories they could tell. l

Winter Flock A flock of wheeling long-tailed tits capture Ruth Lawrenceâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s imagination this month as she takes a winter stroll in the countryside

n afternoon stroll in light woodland at the edge of Chailey Common seemed strangely quiet. Other than the rumble of cars passing over cattle grids and the occasional caw of a distant crow, the air was still and silent. The sound of sharply fluttering wings came from nowhere, accompanied by high pitched trilling calls; it was a flock of one of our smallest birds, the diminutive long-tailed tit. I stood still as at least a dozen flitted among the slim branches of silver birch above my head. Long-tailed tits live in family parties of up to twenty, consisting of a brood, its parents and extra adults who help

The nest of a long-tailed tit is a remarkable home; constructed from moss, spider silk and up to two thousand feathers raise the brood if their own has failed. As winter approaches, each flock maintains a vigorously defended winter territory that can expand to 25 hectares. They seemed to move as one through the trees, calling continuously; their togetherness is a survival mechanism because their low weight of less than 8g means that they need one anotherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s

body heat on freezing winter nights. Huddling close in large groups allows them to survive the cold for they are unusually small for birds at this latitude. Their bodies seem little more than small feathered spheres, beautifully marked with dusky pink patches contrasting with their black and white plumage; itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the extra long tail that serves to double their length. The nest of a long-tailed tit is a remarkable home; constructed from moss, spider silk and up to two thousand feathers, it is a fully enclosed dome, leaving only a small

entrance hole for extra protection against rats, squirrels, magpies and stoats. It is camouflaged on the outside by tiny flakes of lichen, chosen for their grey green colour so that the pale surface makes the nest very hard to detect. The spider silk helps to anchor nest-to-branch while the cocoons and eggs double as nutritious food. The silk lends the nest an unusual quality, enabling it to expand to accommodate the growing chicks. Nests built early in the season can take three weeks to complete whereas late ones can be hastily assembled in as little as a week of concentrated effort. Studies have shown that pairs who lose a brood will often help to raise those of another pair. It seems that the net gain of offspring raised with helpers is greater than the gain made if attempting another brood of their own. After a few brief moments of watching the family flock enliven the autumn air with chatter and movement, they departed as one; I could hear their talk diminish with distance and the branches quieted once more, settling as the tiny wings flew on. l

It’s a Dog’s Life Rolo the Border Terrier is in full Christmas swing this December and waiting in anticipation for Santa Paws

hilst dogs generally have a different perspective to people, we’re nearer the ground, what can I tell you, I have to say that I like Christmas. Whilst ‘Her Indoors’ gets preoccupied and starts rushing round with lists, and ‘Him Indoors’ hides in the study muttering about the cost, there are some seasonal delights, like the re-emergence of home baking, for a dog to enjoy. ‘Her Indoors’ is a bit of a messy cook so there are floor cleaning duties with some festive flavours for me and my apprentice, Teddy. There’re also parcel deliveries to bark at. I can’t hear the doorbell these days, due to senior deafness, but Teds can, so I join in. It’s all good fun. There is also the return of the Juniors to the family home which is always good for a bit of tummy tickling and fussing, plus there’s the muchanticipated visit of Santa Paws. I used to worry that I’d get missed out, as I’m not generally a very good dog, but he’s

been coming for the last sixteen years so I’m not so concerned these days. I hope he realises I’ve got an apprentice as I don’t want to have to share. And without letting the dog out of the bag, if you’ve ever wondered how the old fella gets past the canine home guard, it’s got a lot to do with biscuits! Christmas, however, isn’t always a good time for dogs. Puppies are sometimes bought as Christmas presents, and then, when the novelty wears off in the cold light of January, and the reality of incontinence, chewing, training, walking and needlesharp puppy teeth, finally dawns, they end up in rescue centres. Last year, I heard that in the run up to Christmas there is an increase in elderly dogs given up to make

way for a cute puppy. Now I’m all in favour of cuteness, after all, I’m pretty blessed in that department myself, but a dog who has given the best years of their life to their family deserves a comfortable old age in a bed by the fire with loving owners in my book. This year will be the first Christmas that Teddy has been with us so I’ll have to set him a suitable example. He needs to know that the indoor tree isn’t for weeing on, premature opening of presents is frowned upon, crackers aren’t fireworks in disguise, parcel ribbon isn’t edible and sprouts are best avoided if he wants to be allowed in the lounge later. It’s pretty similar for people too, so go easy on the unsuitable eating and drinking or you could find yourself in trouble with the presents and embarrassing yourself with the Christmas tree! Have a great time! l

WEEDS IN THE HEART by Nathaniel Hughes and Fiona Owen (Quintessence Press)

This rather uninspiring title is a pity, because the book itself is absolutely beautiful and would make a wonderful Christmas present. The illustrations are accurate, informative and exquisite, and make this a coffee table book to leaf through at your leisure. It deals with the medicinal and spiritual aspects of the plants found in the Stroud Valley, and although it is very clear that it is not a medical textbook, it does include scientific elements as well as meditative ones. The opening of the preface sums

The illustrations are accurate, informative and exquisite it up very well: This book is the opposite of an encyclopaedia. It focuses on a relatively small number of uses for a small number of herbs from a highly subjective viewpoint. There are genuine case studies, both from the point of view of the person experiencing the treatment and the herbalist prescribing it, with plenty of references if you want to pursue a particular topic further. Hughes describes himself as an AnimistBuddhist, believing that consciousness can be found throughout nature. Even if you don’t agree with much of the philosophy behind the book, it is still a worthwhile read as many old-fashioned remedies are revisited.

This is quite a long book, and needs perseverance. The main narration is by ten-year-old Grace. The action takes place in the heatwave of 1976 on a housing estate, where everyone knows everyone else’s business, and there is a central mystery concerning a disappearance which we see through Grace’s eyes. She decides to investigate, along with her friend Tilly. The flashbacks to 1967 give clues to the main thrust of the book, but the final twist surprised me without feeling I’d

‘Tis the season to be jolly. ‘Tis also the season to stretch one’s legs with the returning Tim… So, don your favourite festive pullover and traverse the Downs with us this Christmas

e left Lewes by train, arriving at Plumpton eight minutes later. Head for the western end of the platform, towards the larger footbridge, turning left at the end, walking parallel to the racecourse. Follow the tarmac as it skirts around the buildings, gently uphill and over the brow as it changes to concrete underfoot. Turn right at the T-junction by the end of the flint wall, noting the V on the Downs, two miles distant as the crow flies. Follow the loosely surfaced track for ¾ of a mile, along the natural ebb and flow of the landscape. At the end, turn left by the post box, veering right 50m later by the red telephone box. The track passes between old and new graveyards, a serene and scenic location whatever the weather. A ¼ mile later, turn left at the T-junction. The surface becomes looser as the Downs approach, narrowing to a footpath by the green metal railings where it enters the tree canopy. The trees become woodland as the path ekes its way up the shallow gradient of downland pre-scarp. Two gates precede a duplicate arrangement slightly further

“We’ve made the top of the Downs,” whooped Tim on, immediately before the Offham to Ditchling road. Turn right, walking along the road for 20m, before turning left and beginning the final major ascent of the Sussex Living walking year. Narrow at first, the path opens up as chalk appears underfoot and the gradient stiffens, increasingly. The gate opens on to Streat Hill. The route runs parallel to an old cutting, towards another gate. “I’ve missed these walks, it’s hurting my calves,” chirped Tim, as a seat appeared on the right.

The path arcs to the right into a bowl layered with ancient terraces, towards the V. Planted in 1887 to celebrate Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee, it consists of beech, fir and lime – with glorious shades of shimmering red, orange and yellow on the day we visited. The path finesses the tip, offering views of trees planted in parallel, generations ago. “We’ve made the top of the Downs,” whooped Tim as the wind welcomed us to the summit gate at 224m (735 feet). Turn left, along the South Downs Way, through the hollow at the top of Streat Bostal, past the junction with Plumpton Bostal, turning right 200m later, by the bridleway fingerpost. Where the path bears left, keep to the right of the fence. The trail leads downhill, towards a gate, just before the power lines. The steepness increases as another gate approaches, before the path reaches the valley floor of Waterpit Bottom. The route sweeps right and uphill, skipping across contours, beyond the gorse to the summit of Waterpit Hill at 150m (492 feet) at the metal gate. Ahead lies the sea, visible on the horizon. Alongside the path, a few wild rapeseed brighten the way. After half a mile wandering gently downhill, turn right at the dilapidated brick building, following the path into the lines of beech trees, then through them to the narrow road that runs alongside. Walk north along the road for no more than 150m, then take the path on the left, by the telegraph pole, turning 180° and heading south. Between them, they look after 6,000 new mothers and their babies every year. Having jaundice monitors on home visits will allow midwives to carry out a simple test on babies suspected of having jaundice. This will reduce the time and stress on families who currently have to travel back to their local hospital A&E for the test. Bexhill Care Home Opens its Doors to Combat Loneliness and Isolation Older people are being welcomed into Sussex Housing & Care’s residential care home in Bexhill for a free hot lunch, to enjoy some friendly company and to take part in a variety of activities. Sussex Housing & Care, a not for profit provider of housing and care for older people in Sussex, is leading the initiative to help tackle the increasing local and national problem of loneliness and isolation amongst older people. Ardath care home in Bexhill will open its doors on Tuesday 11th December, and the second Tuesday of every month, from 11am to 3pm. Visitors can enjoy a variety of activities, as well as refreshments and a two-course lunch. As well as inpatient care and wellbeing services, local charity St Peter & St James Hospice offer support in people’s own homes. Here, Gary Marshall, a Community Nurse Specialist at the hospice, explains why support at home is so important and what caring for local families means to him

ll of our hospice services are focussed on helping people with a terminal illness achieve the best possible quality of life, and in the community team we do this by offering expert advice and support in the comfort of patients’ own homes. While on my visits across Sussex, I might review someone’s medication or work to ease difficult symptoms, offer guidance around the next stages of illness or help somebody put plans in place for the end of their life. Sometimes it’s simply about having a chat to patients and relatives and listening to their worries or helping them to understand what’s happening. To be welcomed into people’s homes is a privilege. You get to see the real person Debbie and partner Gary and paint a vivid picture of their life. I love forming those deeper connections with those I’m supporting. I feel people are often more relaxed at home too, which lends itself to more open conversations. She passed away peacefully at the hospice in May. To have been able to improve her quality of life and put her somewhat at ease was incredibly rewarding. THE MONTH OF DECEMBER With fairy lights and the festive season upon us, Michelle Brett brings us all the best that December has to offer

Facts and Figures

he first of December heralds the start of meteorological winter, and the 21st, the shortest day – often regarded as the first day of winter – although the temperature drop that we had in late November certainly made it feel that winter was knocking on the door earlier than that! The word December came from the Latin word decem (meaning ten) as it was originally the tenth month of the year (the winter days following December were not included as any part of a month – it was only much later that January and February were created out of this monthless period).

In the Kitchen The ‘glut of the month’ for December, is the Brussel sprout! They’re at their sweetest and most flavourful (yes, really!) after a frost. Harvest from the bottom of the stalk upwards. Why not make a winter coleslaw by mixing shredded sprouts with apple, grated carrot, toasted walnuts and mayonnaise. Or for the leftovers, cooked sprouts are wonderful when fried with crispy bacon and sage, or as part of a bubble and squeak. Stilton is considered a Christmas cheese, and with the shortened maturing time it changes in character through the year, with the Christmas batch now being sweeter – ideal with a glass of port! Like lots of products, ‘Stilton’ has a protected status and can only be made in three counties: none of which are Stilton in Cambridgeshire where the cheese was invented!

The 26th December, Boxing Day, is celebrated in a number of countries that used to form part of the British Empire. It was custom for servants who had to wait on their masters on Christmas Day, to have the following day off to visit their families. They would be given a box to take home containing gifts and bonuses and sometimes left-over food. Here in the UK and also Canada, Australia, Trinidad and Tobago and New Zealand, the day is primarily known as a shopping holiday and lots of sports fixtures are now held on this day too. For those born in December, their star signs will be either Sagittarius or Capricorn with the birthstone being the turquoise, tanzanite or zircon; and birth flower, the narcissus. The day length is down to its shortest at seven hours and forty-nine minutes and the sea temperature will be down to 12° – certainly not the chilliest it’ll get this winter! December birthdays include: Dame Judi Dench (9th), Kenneth Branagh (10th), Paula Radcliffe (17th), Maurice & Robin Gibb (22nd) and Annie Lennox (25th).

In the Garden This month is the last chance to plant new fruit trees and bushes for next summer’s fruits. Secure the tree loosely to its stake to prevent it being dislodged and remember to water when it doesn’t rain! Leave any parsnips in the ground – they taste much better after the frosts, and if there’s any tomatoes left out, they’re unlikely to ripen any further. Bring them in and put them next to a banana to ripen quickly. Or make them into a green tomato chutney – ideal as a present! Protect your pond by skimming off any leaves and trimming any foliage so as not to pollute the water. If you’ve any fish, float a tennis ball in the water to stop the fish becoming icebound. Pruning any dormant plants quite severely will prove beneficial for next seasons growth.

Guinea Fowl SERVES

A bird is traditionally the one must-have for the Christmas table, for a bit of variety why not try roast guinea fowl with oyster mushrooms? Sherry and mushrooms are a good combination, worthy of any celebratory meal making it a festive feast with a delicious twist, and lots of sherry! INGREDIENTS 2 small guinea fowl 2 tbsp olive oil 2 medium onions 4 cloves garlic, lightly crushed Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper 500g oyster mushrooms, cleaned 2 tsp rosemary, finely chopped 80-100g Serrano ham 100ml fino sherry METHOD Preheat oven to 220c/425f/ gas mark 7.

Rub two tablespoons of olive oil over 2 the guinea fowl and place in a lightly oiled roasting tray. Cut one onion into

wedges and put them in each cavity with the garlic. Season the birds. Place in the oven and roast for 45 minutes to one hour. After about 40 minutes test the leg using a skewer. If the juices run clear, the guinea fowl is cooked; if they are still pink, it will require more cooking. When cooked, transfer the guinea fowl to a board and leave to rest for 10 minutes, loosely covered with foil. Meanwhile, cook the mushrooms. Place the roasting tin on the hob and heat the oil. Add mushrooms, one

chopped onion, garlic and any juices from the cavity of the guinea fowl, the rosemary, half the Serrano ham torn into small strips, and fry for two to four minutes until the mushrooms are almost cooked. Add the sherry and let it simmer for a minute. Check seasoning; if too strong, add a splash of water. Serve half a guinea fowl per person with the remaining Serrano ham on top and the mushrooms with gravy on the side. l

Try Sara Whatley’s vegan mushroom wellington for a mouth-watering centre piece INGREDIENTS 1 pound mixed mushrooms, sliced 1 red onion, diced 2 garlic cloves, chopped Olive oil Pinch of salt Large sprig rosemary, leaves stripped and chopped 125g cooked chestnuts, roughly chopped Glug of booze (vegan wine/sherry/ port) Dribble of balsamic vinegar Optional extra, truffle oil Ground black pepper to taste

1 sheet ready roll puff pastry (many are vegan), room temp METHOD Pre heat the oven to 200C/Gas 6. Heat the oil in a pan and gently sauté the onion, garlic, mushrooms, rosemary and salt until all the liquid has evaporated, be patient it takes a while.

Add a generous glug of your chosen 2 alcohol and continue to sauté until the mix is dry again. Add the chopped

chestnuts, balsamic, drop of truffle oil if using and pepper. Leave to cool.

Unroll the puff pastry and mound 3 the mushroom mix down the centre. With a sharp knife cut slightly

diagonal ribbons down either side and bring alternative sides over the top, as if plaiting. Tuck the ends under. Brush the pastry with oil and place in the centre of the oven for 35 mins, until nicely brown. l
