Say Goodbye to Being Overweight in 2019 If you are looking for a sustainable way to lose and maintain your weight, which doesn’t involve faddy diets, meal replacements or slimming clubs, then read on!

Success!

After being overweight for 35 years, Rachel Ricketts following the principles of The Metabolic Weight Loss Programme, lost 3 stone in just over 3 months and successfully went on to maintain her weight loss. With a purpose to help as many people as possible to have the life-changing experience that she had of finally getting her weight under control, Rachel qualified Rachel Ricketts, as a weight loss consultant and nutritional adviser. She has never looked back, having helped over 6,000 people in the last 16 years, to bring their dieting days to an end once and for all.

Weight Loss Consultant

As we get older, the metabolic rate slows down due to such things as pregnancy, menopause, lack of sleep, stress and medication. In addition, different types of food and drink can either increase or decrease the metabolic rate. All of these factors can cause difficulty and frustration with weight loss! The purpose of The Metabolic Weight Loss Programme is to help improve your metabolic rate and address any eating or drinking habits that have contributed to your unwanted weight.

“I am delighted with the results of the Metabolic Weight Loss Programme. I always had difficulty in losing weight because of an under active thyroid, but I had no problem losing 3 stone with the programme. I couldn’t have done it without the support, my consultant was always so helpful. I would recommend this programme to anyone. It has been a life changing experience for me.” Betty from Yorkshire

For those who are not able to visit, a very successful remote support service is provided throughout the UK and overseas, distance is no object. In addition to the expected average weight loss of 7-14Ib per month, clients are frequently experiencing improvements in one or more of the following: blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar and energy levels. Not only are they delighted with their health improvements but they report very positive feedback from their doctors: “My doctor congratulated me that I was no longer in the pre-diabetic range. I am over the moon!” “I have just been told by my doctor that I no longer need blood pressure medication, due to having lost 3 stone!” “All my lady patients are struggling to lose weight, but you’ve lost 2 stone despite being on thyroxine – well done!”

Rachel and her team offer personalised one-to-one support which will help you make the necessary changes that allow you not only to lose weight, but also give you the know-how of keeping it off once and for all.

Call now for a free consultation.

The support is non-judgemental and motivating which is very welcomed! In between the weekly consultations, e-mail support is available.

CAUGHT IN A WEBB

television favourite, Robert Webb is well known for his collaborations with David Mitchell and stars alongside him in the award-winning That Mitchell & Webb Sound and the Bafta awardwinning That Mitchell & Webb Look. They partner up again when he plays Jeremy in the cult sitcom Peep Show. Along with all his television work, Robert is also a popular awards host, speaker and writer. Robert attended Cambridge University and when he was a student there he visited Brighton. It wasn’t long after he joined the renowned sketch troupe, Cambridge Footlights that he became one of a cast of five in the Summer Revue, which was going on a UK tour. At the last minute tour manager Simon secured the Brighton Dome for one night only. This meant that the show did not feature in the theatre programme and there were no posters anywhere. “What we got in Brighton was a 2,000-seat venue on the night of the 1994 World Cup Final,” recalls Robert, who was used to playing 200 to 300-seat theatres that were half

full. “When I asked how many tickets we’d sold, Simon conceded that the presales were ‘on the disappointing side of brilliant.’ When pressed, he said that the actual figure, ‘if we really want to dwell on a literal figure’, was ‘something in the vicinity of fifteen’. When he came under some pressure to clarify, Simon admitted: it was twelve! He suggested we might need to go flyering. I looked out upon the vast sea of empty red seats, disappearing into the distance on three tiers.” Robert took his allocation of 300 leaflets and when the others couldn’t see him, threw them away “and headed for the nudist beach.” “I was seven when I saw a grownup news report about the opening of Brighton naturist beach in 1980. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. But these people are bare! Outside! They don’t seem to mind that everyone can see!” Finding himself there in the flesh that hot day in 1994 Robert couldn’t resist. “It was a hot day, I hadn’t got any swimming trunks and I couldn’t think of anything better to do. I peeled off my Footlights Tour T-shirt before I

got there. Somehow it wouldn’t do to be recognised as a Cambridge revue performer in such an environment… The clientele appeared to be 80 per cent single men.” Only a year earlier Robert had met David Mitchell at a Cinderella audition. They put together their first project two years later. As an actor Robert starred in comedy TV series Bruiser, was Robin in The Smoking Room and Bill Hathaway in Blessed. He had a recurring role as Jedrington Secret-Past in The Bleak Old Shop of Stuff and starred as Dan in Fresh Meat. In 2013 he starred as Neil Tilly in the TV mini-series Ambassadors and has also starred in the films Confetti, Magicians, and The Wedding Video. Well-known for playing Bertie Wooster in Perfect Nonsense, Robert has performed at Chichester Festival Theatre. His performance helped the comedy win the Olivier Award for Best Comedy. Fellow Cambridge Footlight Alumnus Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie have also played Jeeves and Wooster and Robert points out

that theirs were smaller screen roles, whereas his was “very theatrical and very mad.” Robert’s mother died when he was just 17 and in the lower sixth form preparing for his A-levels. She had developed a cough, which turned out to be aggressive lung cancer. Robert had to deal with the “very painful weeks and months afterwards,” he explained, “She went from finding a lump to being bed-ridden in about five months. There was just enough time to get it into my head that she was going to die. Afterwards, there was just a black hole in the house – I was never going to hear her voice or see her face again.” This devastating ordeal, which he says, shaped him, did not prevent Robert from academic achievement but not surprisingly he did have to re-take his A-levels. He had spoken to his mum about whether he would need to help stepfather Derek bring up his young sister, who was only two at the time. His mum had said that wouldn’t be

necessary pushing Robert to pursue his dreams. Following his mother’s death, Robert went to live with his dad who had become half-deaf from his work as a woodman wearing no ear protection making communication difficult. He confided it was often best over a pint. Robert was determined to go to Cambridge to pursue his comedy ambition; following in the footsteps

of greats like John Cleese, Sir David Frost and Peter Cook and he secured a place at Robinson College where he eventually became vice-president of theatre club the Footlights. Robert’s mum was, “a working class woman who was certainly clever, but not clever enough to avoid getting pregnant before finishing her A-levels.” Robert remembers how she always had a part-time job such as a school secretary, a hotel secretary or a bar worker, and wanted the best for her children in whatever they chose as their career. Growing up, adults referred to Robert as painfully shy and quiet. His sense of humour gradually developed. His parents split up when he was five years old, his mother soon remarrying a man called Derek with whom she had a daughter, Anna-Beth. Robert chose not to refer to Derek as dad. It was while Robert was at home in his bedroom that he came up with his early sketches including The Price is Slight (TV game-show parody) and The GAY Team (parody of children’s TV action drama). “In my sophisticated opinion, doing ‘the gay voice’ has no place in the comedy of 1987, even in Lincolnshire where literally no one is meant to be gay,” he says.

His part-time job at Gateway supermarket earned him £1.36 an hour and saw Robert spending “the hours between five and seven on my sixteenth birthday in the same way as I usually would on a Thursday – stacking shelves.” Although the youngest parttimer he was “as quick as Tony with a price-gun.” Born 10 months after the death of his eldest brother Martin, who was six, from meningitis to parents Paul and Pat (she hated Patricia) Robert has two older brothers, Mark and Andrew. In 2007 Robert married comedienne Abigail Burdess, who has also starred alongside him. The couple have two children, Esme and Dory. Of bringing up daughters, Robert says: “Parenting girls makes you quite gender-conscious – it’s almost impossible to fight the power of pink. It’s not such a terrible thing to want to be a princess when you’re five, but it would be nice if there were some other options.” And how did his day sunbathing on the nudist beach turn out? Well, while there Robert met another nude man called Bryan with whom he had a conversation about local house prices. It bored him senseless, he confides. l How Not to be a Boy by Robert Webb is out now.

Full of fabulous independent retailers, arts and culture, history, characterful architecture and idyllic countryside, the town of Lewes in East Sussex is a delight to explore. Peter d’Aguilar pays it a visit

isiting Lewes, the county town of East Sussex, feels a little like stepping back in time. Set in the heart of the South Downs and dissected by the River Ouse, Lewes has a long and colourful history reflected in the old-world charm and character of its architecture and meandering twittens - the local word for lanes or alleyways. Dominated by a picturesque eleventh century castle and the distinctive aroma of hops from the local brewery, the town’s Dickensian atmosphere merges synergistically with its modern-day chic and artistic flair. Lewes is thought to be the original site of the Roman settlement Mutuantonis, and there is earlier evidence of Iron Age inhabitation in the vicinity. After occupation by the Saxons and Normans, King Stephen granted the town a charter in 1148. In 1264, Simon De Montfort defeated King Henry III at the Battle of Lewes. Thomas Paine, one of America’s Founding Fathers, lived and worked in Lewes during the late eighteenth

century and founded his revolutionary Headstrong Club. The railway first chugged into town in 1848. As well as the castle, local landmarks include the remains of Lewes Priory, Bull House (Thomas Paine’s former home), Southover Grange and Anne of Cleves House -

a 16th century timber-framed Wealden hall house which, like the castle, is owned and maintained by the Lewesbased Sussex Archaeological Society. The Round House, a secluded former windmill in Pipe Passage, was once owned by Virginia Woolf. The Pells Pool, built in 1860, is the oldest freshwater lido in England. The centre of Lewes is renowned for its high calibre regional vernacular architecture and diverse construction

the Lewes Pound, to encourage trade within the town. The well-known local brewery has been producing beer since 1794 and today is recognised as one of the finest ale producers in England. Three Sites of Special Scientific Interest lie within the parish - Lewes Downs, Lewes Brooks and Southerham Works Pit. The Railway Land nature reserve on the east side of the town next to the Ouse contains an area of woodland and marshes. This now includes the Heart of Reeds, a sculpted reed bed designed by a local land artist. The town’s best-known annual event is the Lewes Bonfire celebration on Guy Fawkes Night. As well as the 1605

Gunpowder Plot, it also commemorates the seventeen Protestant martyrs burnt at the stake in Lewes by Catholic Queen Mary I between 1555-57. This spectacular event, which controversially includes burning an effigy of Pope Paul V who was pontiff during the martyrdoms, is the largest and most famous bonfire night in the country. Lewes has an unusually diverse range of specialist independent retailers - in particular its secondhand bookshops and antique dealers; bucking the national trend towards shopping precincts, chain stores and large corporate outlets. Lewes Farmers’ Market, originally one of the first in Britain, was resurrected in the 1990s and takes place in pedestrianised Cliffe High Street on the first and third Saturdays of each month; with local food producers selling their wares under covered market stalls. There is also a weekly food market in the Market Tower, often featuring traders from Blois - Lewes’ twin town in France. Lewes is also twinned with WaldshutTiengen in Germany. Lewes has a rich cultural life. An internationally-famous opera house is just four miles to the north east. Lewes Operatic Society and New Sussex Opera are based in the town, along with

In 1900 local art collector Edward Perry Warren commissioned the

celebrated French sculptor Auguste Rodin to create a copy of his legendary statue The Kiss, which resided in Lewes from 1904 until 1953, when it moved to its current home in the Tate Modern. Perhaps inspired by the revolutionary fervour of Thomas Paine, the people of Lewes like to do things a little differently. Apart from burning effigies of popes and prime ministers, they are keen to embrace environmental issues, alternative therapies, artistic endeavour and radical political ideas - all of which contributes to the town’s unique and vibrant atmosphere. Lewes is also a hotbed of sport; with well-established and successful cricket,

football, rugby, hockey, golf, athletics, cycling, tennis, bowls and swimming clubs. Lewes Football Club, founded in 1885, is a pioneer of equal pay for male and female players. The Moyleman is a new off-road marathon run across the surrounding hills that starts and finishes in Lewes. The Vanguard Way and the South Downs Way both pass close to the town. The popular Lewes Hike and Bike Festival began in 2012. The town also has a strong tradition for idiosyncratic local pub games including Toad in the Hole, Dwyle Flunking and the World Pea Throwing Championships. l

NEW YEAR NEW YOU

BUZZING WITH HEALTH IN

2019

Kick start your 2019 with a healthy outlook for mind, body, heart and home designed to last you all through the year. Sasha Kanal tells you how

S

o here we are again. It’s January 2019, the last of the Christmas detritus has been dutifully cleared away and the children are already talking about Easter. There’s not much to look forward to now until April rolls along, right? WRONG! There is SO much to look forward to and yes, there’s work to be done, but it’s all good and will hopefully benefit you no end. So read on dear health conscious readers to get the best out of the year ahead and yourself. And don’t forget, take it easy… MIND Take a mindful approach to your health in 2019. A word that’s so often overused, but here, what’s meant is a more caring approach to yourself and your body. Be kind to yourself, starting with your head. Often our default internal

or something to be endured, so we’re already starting with a wholly defensive attitude. Exercise is SO very important, but let’s not lose sight of the fact that it’s there to benefit us. Carrying a guilty heart and negative mind-set around if we miss one spinning session is not going to do that. Similarly, January is not the time to go hell for leather into a full on detox or brutal exercise regime when you monologue aren’t used to it. Too often we see exercise as work This is where it is set at something inevitably ends or something to be endured between badly, as people indifference start things that and negativity. “Gosh I’m so stupid! are far too different from their normal Why did I do that?” and so on. Tell this activities, so they find it impossible to inner voice to shut it and imagine it to keep them up. Making gradual changes be a kinder, more soothing character, is always the most sensible approach. Be one that gives you a break and doesn’t adaptable too. If one thing doesn’t work berate you for minor mistakes. out then try something else, making the changes bite size really can make them BODY far more manageable. Next it’s time to give your physical self a Start by adding some extras into metaphorical break. This doesn’t mean your day. Take the stairs not the lift. I doing nothing - of course not! What it know someone who lost a stone doing does mean is taking up exercise or rethis. Yes they worked on one of the starting an old regime after Christmas higher floors in a high rise building at with an easy approach. Don’t foist the Canary Wharf but the fact they did guilt on yourself for not getting back to this consistently day in day out paid it on January 1st or for failing to attend dividends for them after just a few an exercise class when something else weeks. Add some time into your day to walk a different way to work or to the more important or unavoidable comes station. Get up a little earlier and take up. Too often we see exercise as work

the energy dip afterwards. Cut down on alcohol for January or give up completely if you can. Fancy that third glass of Merlot? Have a big glass of water with cordial instead when you do and then see how you feel. Alternatively, take a warm bath with calming essential oils instead of filling your glass. It’s surprising how the little things can break a bigger cycle or habit. Sometimes all it takes is just a minor shift. HEART Invest in yourself! Book a relaxing

massage, acupuncture session or spa day somewhere and give yourself something to look forward to throughout the darkest months. Similarly, sign up to learn a new skill or language and challenge yourself to try something new and master it. HOME With a ‘hygge’ and not heavy heart, reset your home for January and beyond. Buy a sheepskin or faux fur rug in the January sales and drape them across your sofa – Scandi style. Invest in an outdoor fire pit and light it up on a cold, sunny winter’s afternoon. There’s nothing nicer than wrapping up and sitting around the primal light and warmth of those flickering flames, drinking hot chocolate and toasting marshmallows. Finally, say no to fast fashion and mindless consumption. Fast, cheap clothing is having a catastrophic effect on our planet. Instead, utilise what’s already in your wardrobe or go to some of the many wonderful vintage and pre-loved clothing shops in our county. Seek out inspiration online or in store on how to style these items. So much better for your bank balance! Buy quality over quantity and classics that will last rather than a ‘wear once’ outfit. Clearing out your wardrobe can be so therapeutic, especially after Christmas, but don’t forget to give unwanted items to charity or recycle them, passing on the joy instead of filling up the landfill. ctivewear is now a firm fixture on the fashion map and despite its humble, rather pedestrian beginnings, is now a legitimate clothing genre with a billion-dollar market globally. Things have certainly moved on from the days of throwing on a faded old t-shirt and joggers to go out for a run or exercising in boring leggings and a shapeless top. We now have ever more stylish, sophisticated and comfortable offerings from both high street outlets and designers alike. Read on to discover the best activewear trends for 2019.

TIP FIVE TIPS TO A FIT AND HEALTH 2019

1

SLEEP - Aim for 7-8 hours of sleep per night. Recovering from training and stresses that have come your way throughout the day is vital to keeping you in tip-top shape. It has been shown that those who don’t get adequate sleep, can actually have a higher risk of injury and an increase in calorie consumption. EAT TO WIN - Whether it be weight loss or to gain muscle, protein is an important part of the process. Ensuring we eat adequate protein will ensure we lose as little muscle as possible when losing weight, keeping our metabolism as fast as possible, as well as providing our bodies with the building blocks to build muscle and create the physique you want. Aiming for 1g per lb of bodyweight will ensure you are eating enough to reap the rewards. STAY ACTIVE – Focus on your NEAT i.e. NON EXERCISE ACTIVITY THERMOGENESIS. Basically how many calories you burn through daily movements, from walking, doing household chores, running round after the kids etc. Aim for 8-10k steps per day. This ensures you are staying active and not sitting for long periods of time, burning as many calories as possible throughout the day without much hassle at all. MAKE IT FUN - The reason many of our fitness endeavours seem to fail is because they simply aren’t fun. Enjoying exercise

2 3 4

is so key to sustainable fitness. Try out different Ryan Smith, forms of Personal exercise Trainer at to establish Isenhurst Health Clubs what suits you. Motivation to fitness is key and if you want to exercise then that is half the battle done. Maybe group fitness is more your thing, so check out classes at your local gym as well as outdoor sports and fitness clubs and classes local to your area. FOCUS ON THE PROCESS - If we focus on the BIG goal ahead, it can be daunting. It could even put us off starting. Finding smaller goals along the way will keep you SUPER motivated, giving you wins that eventually lead to your end goal. Want to run 10k? Just focus on running 1k at first, then each extra 1k you run is another win. Want to drop two stone? Maybe set a goal of losing 1kg at a time. Having smaller wins along the way will be more motivational than having that daunting BIG goal to aim for.

NEW YEAR, NEW YOU

Lisa de Silva discovers how to enjoy mental wellbeing in the workplace and the huge benefits this has not only to the business, but to the individual as well

W

WORK HAPPY, Be Happy

ith many British workers feeling stressed, overworked and overtired, it has never been more important to safeguard our mental health and wellbeing within the workplace. In 201617, research by the Health and Safety Executive revealed that over 500,000 British workers suffered from workrelated stress, depression or anxiety, resulting in the loss of 12.5 million working days. Clearly, there is not just a personal cost involved in workplace stress, but also a business cost in terms of absenteeism and unproductivity, both of which impact on profitability. Working long hours under sustained pressure, skipping lunch breaks and not taking annual leave will inevitably result in stress and burnout. What’s more, it reduces your ability to be productive, creative and motivated, but the good news is that there are measures you can take to improve your mental wellbeing at work. If you are struggling with your workload, talk to your manager about delegating work to others, extending deadlines or having extra training. You can also encourage the company to appoint Mental Health First Aiders to support those struggling with issues, such as bullying and talk to your company about the possibility of flexible working. Flexible working has been proven to keep staff motivated,

healthier and greatly improve mental wellbeing and since 2014, all employees that have worked at a company for at least 26 weeks have the right for one ‘flexibility request’ per year. Most importantly, do work sensible hours and take regular breaks. We all know that our digital devices need to be recharged, well so do we. If you feel stressed during the working day take a break for a cup of tea, listen to a favourite piece of music, talk to a colleague or go for a short walk. Do take your full lunch hour and if possible, use this time for relaxing and socialising, by organising a group activity like taking a walk or starting a book or a craft club. It can also help to improve your working environment, so declutter your workspace, get a plant and decorate with personal photographs or pictures. It is important to keep a clear delineation between work and home life. At the end of each day write a To Do List and leave these tasks at work ready for the morning. Try to use your commuting time to unwind and when you get home change your clothes, do not check work emails, turn off all digital devices at least two hours before bedtime and try to prioritise exercise, good food and sleep, all of which will boost your mental wellbeing. By taking steps to ensure you stay recharged and refreshed, it is possible that work becomes a source of healthy mental wellbeing and less of a stress. l

South Hams, they felt, finally, that this property was what they’d long been searching for. “For 30 years, we’d lived in a lovely medieval farmhouse near Guildford, but once our two daughters Sophie (26), and Amy (28) flew the nest, we decided the time was right to do something completely different – and move to an area we’ve always loved,” she explains. Despite their enthusiasm, it proved easier said than done. While their priority was to find somewhere that would suit the two of them, they also wanted to create a retreat for visiting family and friends. But properties that met their criteria – a home with a layout that would give both them and their guests privacy and space – seemed few and far between. “We decided to instruct a professional property-finding company,” says Stuart. “It might perhaps seem an expensive option, but it proved absolutely worth it.”

Not only did the south west country house finder sort the wheat from the chaff, meaning the couple didn’t make fruitless trips to view unsuitable properties, the company’s expert knowledge of the local market meant they were ahead of other buyers and well placed to assess value and negotiate where necessary on Jeni and Stuart’s behalf, saving them considerable time, stress and worry. “When the company called to tell us about an old millhouse that had been on the market for a while, we were hopeful,” says Jeni. “We loved its situation, and the size sounded perfect. We went down that weekend with fingers crossed.” The couple were also intrigued by the property’s considerable history: records show a mill has been on this site next to a farm mentioned in the Domesday book, and is powered by water from the stream that runs along one side of the valley. While it’s thought this particular mill building was constructed some 200 years ago, the adjoining cob cottage – which once housed the miller and his family – dates back to at least the 15th century. It operated as a working mill until just before the Second World War; then the area was commandeered by American troops, evacuated,

The kitchen units were all in situ when the couple moved in. “Luckily they’re exactly to our taste,” says Jeni, “and we’ve always loved this colour!” The units offset the cheery red Aga, which ensures the room stays warm and inviting

DINING ROOM

The characterful dining room which leads on from the kitchen is on the ground floor of what was once the adjoining cottage. The flagstones are an original feature Jeni has been collecting vintage tableware and linen for years - and uses it at every opportunity. “I don’t save anything for special occasions only,” she says

The far end of the kitchen is a cosy place for informal meals

and the building used to accommodate soldiers. The fortunes of the mill were to change forever when during the war a line of bombs were dropped along the valley, destroying the leat (the manmade channel which diverted the stream water to the mill) effectively removing the supply. Not surprisingly, then, that after the war, the mill was used for nothing more than storage for the neighbouring farm’s machinery and supplies, a state of affairs that continued until the early nineties, when new owners took on the considerable task of converting the mill into living accommodation. They also linked it to the cottage via an intriguing labyrinth of passages and staircases which knit the two buildings together. Jeni and Stuart were not only charmed by the building’s provenance, but the layout, particularly the fact that there were four bedrooms on the cottage side (“perfect for guests!”), and three within the mill building, reinforced their conviction that here, at last, was the property they’d been looking for. Within six months, Keynedon Mill was theirs. While the property was generally in good condition, most of the rooms needed updating. “We loved all the original features, but really wanted to introduce a feeling of light and space,” Jeni explains. Stuart got stuck in without delay, redecorating rooms and corridors in soft, neutral shades, installing contemporary bathrooms and

We loved all the original features, but really wanted to introduce a feeling of light and space updating the basic heating system with ecofriendly wood-burning stoves. Meanwhile, Jeni, who had worked in the interiors industry for many years, thought how best to incorporate much of their existing furniture – an easy mix of family heirlooms and classic furnishings – into their new home. Not least, she wanted to make good use of the numerous collections of antique linens, tableware, and charming finds, from vintage signs to kitchenalia she’s amassed over the years. “We were so lucky that almost everything we already had looked completely at home at the Mill,” she says. “Although we had to invest in a few new pieces, generally it meant we were able to make each of the rooms comfortable and homely as soon as they’d been redecorated.” Jeni goes on to say, “Having the space for our two lovely grown-up daughters, family and friends to stay for wonderful weekends really makes this house a home, and being surrounded by all our special treasures which we’ve collected over the years.” Indeed, within seven months of moving in, the couple were more than settled in their new home

PUZZLES

PUZZLE PAGE SUDOKU

A simple process of logic is all that it takes to solve each puzzle in this game. Put the numbers 1 to 9 in each vertical column and each horizontal line. Each number must appear only once in each column and line and in each of the 3x3 boxes in the grid.

CROSS CODE

Each number in the grid represents a different letter of the alphabet. You have three letters in the control grid to start you off. Enter them in the appropriate squares in the main grid, then use your knowledge of words to work out which letters should go in the missing squares. As you get the letters, fill in other squares with the same number in the main grid and control grid. Check off the alphabetical list of letters as you identify them.

Kakuro puzzles resemble crosswords which use numbers instead of words. The aim of the game is to fill all the blank squares in the grid with only the numbers 1-9 so that the numbers you enter add up to the corresponding clues. When the grid is filled, the puzzle is complete.

BLOOMING TIMES

THINK

Houseplants Post-Christmas gloom? Brighten up your home with houseplants, says Flo Whitaker

N

ow is the perfect time to rescue those neglected houseplants that you pushed into dark corners during the Christmas upheaval. January brings a welcome increase in daylight hours which will trigger plants into growth - but they cannot flourish with dusty foliage. Plants with large, shiny leaves can be washed using cotton wool balls dipped in cool water. Support each leaf underneath with one hand while using the other to gently wipe the leaf surface. Smaller-leaved plants will enjoy a lukewarm shower. Secure the pot tightly inside a plastic bag to prevent water flooding the compost, stand the plant under the gentlest shower setting for a minute, then allow to ‘drip dry’. Furry-leaved plants hate getting their foliage wet - water droplets become trapped in the hairs, causing leaves to rot. They can be gently cleaned using a soft brush, (a cosmetic blusher-type brush is ideal.) Most of our houseplants hail from tropical climes and take a rest during winter. Don’t be tempted to repot or feed them until they are in full, active growth in March-April. Houseplant problems can often be attributed to the wrong location. A windowsill that was warm and sunny in July may be cool and shady in November, so take note of the seasons and move your plants around to suit their needs. They can suffer badly from fluctuating temperatures, especially in winter. Plants trapped behind closed curtains have to contend with chilly glass that becomes even colder when

the central heating goes off - remove plants from your windowsills before drawing the curtains! Sun-worshippers such as Musa, (banana), Aloe, Pelargonium and Kalenchoe enjoy a brightly-lit location in full sunshine, whereas Begonia rex, African Violet,

Aspidistra isn’t known as the ‘Cast Iron Plant’ for nothing and will survive in places where other plants fail Monstera, (Cheese plant) and the majority of the fern family are shadier characters who thrive when positioned away from intense light. Say ‘cacti’ and we immediately think of scorching heat, but deserts can be severely cold places. Some cacti and succulents will happily overwinter in a cool porch or conservatory, so long as the temperature doesn’t drop below 5°C. Draughty hallways and landings are challenging environments for plants. Asplenium, with its thick, waxy fronds will probably cope, as will the

Asparagus fern, along with almostindestructible ivies that usefully come in many varieties with different leaf shapes and colours. The handsome Aspidistra isn’t known as the ‘Cast Iron Plant’ for nothing and will survive in places where other plants fail. Once an essential feature in Victorian parlours, they positively thrived in the noxious air caused by coal fires and gas lamps. However, be warned; Aspidistra owners are in it for the long haul. Spectacularly long-lived, some plants have been bequeathed in wills. It’s the horticultural equivalent of inheriting a parrot or tortoise - your Aspidistra will probably outlive you! l

PETS

It’s a Dog’s Life January can be a gloomy month for man and beast, but Rolo the Border Terrier is looking on the bright side of things

N

ow it’s got to be said that January isn’t my favourite month of the year. I don’t know why, but after Christmas, ‘Her Indoors’ usually gets fanciful ideas in the house cleansing department and this often extends to me. ‘Out with the old and in with the new’ seems to refer to bath water here, and Teddy, my apprentice, needs to watch out too. He wasn’t with us this time last year, but I reckon he could be in danger of a quick dunk in the baby

bath and a lathering up with tea tree oil shampoo. The smell lingers for days unless ‘Her Indoors’ is distracted and an opportunity for rolling in something occurs, although you do have to be a bit careful otherwise the whole process can repeat itself. The weather in January is usually rather grim too and whilst snow might be bad for people, it’s even

worse for small dogs with short legs. I don’t want to start the New Year with my assets frozen. Still, I’m a positive kind of dog so I’ve decided to think of all the things that I like about January and focus on those. First, has got to be the wood burner. I thought I was pretty good at lying as close as possible and soaking up the soothing rays. Teddy, however, is even better. He lies hard up against the brick edging around the fireplace and gently roasts. Occasionally he has to move to cool down or to get a refreshing drink in the kitchen, but otherwise he’s there, like a barnacle on a ship’s bottom. Then there’s home crafting. In the absence of gardening, ‘Her Indoors’ tends to be busy with inside projects. This can be a dubious blessing. I’ve never quite forgiven her for the handknitted coat that severely dented my street credibility for months a few years ago. This year however, she’s read something about arthritic senior dogs, such as myself, benefiting from a mattress made out of orthopaedic memory foam so she’s bought an offcut and is all set to make a cover out of something warm and fleecy – perfect. I wonder if she could rustle up a stair-lift and a chair that tips you out to save the effort. I just hope she doesn’t get any ideas about a walk-in bath….

Teddy lies hard up against the brick edging around the fireplace and gently roasts The other good thing about January is the food. I have a particular liking for home-made beef stew and I long ago established a routine claim to my own portion. The only problem is, beef stew takes a long time to cook and then ages to cool, so the anticipation is almost unbearable. And these days I have to share with the apprentice. Still, it’s not all bad. If Teds gets distracted or is a bit slow, I sneak in there, faster than you can say ‘clean bowl’, and get second helpings. If you snooze, you lose, in this household! As I said, it’s not all bad in January. l

A PASSION Henley House owner Chris Hall has spent his career devoted to animals. Ruth Lawrence went along to meet him and found out more about the latest technology installed in his surgery

for Pets

W

ithin moments of meeting Chris Hall, the owner of Henley House Veterinary Clinic in Uckfield, it became clear that he is utterly committed to the wellbeing of the animals in his care. Single-handedly, he has grown the practice from scratch over 12 years, working every weekday and weekend to gain the superb facilities which use the very latest technology to care for his client’s beloved pets. Chris is used to putting everything on the line for animals; he spent years running an emergency clinic in South Wales and worked with cheetahs, rhinos and elephants in South Africa. He is also the main vet for wildlife casualties at the Wildlife Rescue and Ambulance Service based in Whitesmith and has a wealth of touching stories about his experiences helping wild animals here and overseas. The practice now has three vets and Chris has invested heavily to build an extension which houses state of the art diagnostic equipment, dental facilities and operating theatre. Modern digital X-ray and ultrasound technology

Cats and dogs have their own separate quarters which make for far less stressful visits

makes it easy to swiftly discover the cause of problems, while an in-house lab and specialised clinical lab with a courier service makes diagnosis and treatment much more efficient. All basic surgery and some more complex procedures can be carried out in the operating theatre using the latest anaesthetic techniques. Cats and dogs have their own separate quarters which make for far less stressful visits and three consulting rooms add to the efficiency of appointments. Therapeutic laser treatment speeds up post surgery recovery while blood and urine samples can be analysed in the lab for speedy diagnosis. There is a heated operating table as anaesthetic makes an animal’s temperature drop and an independently moving X-ray table, again saving stress and time for the pet. Superb dental facilities mean that tooth problems can be seen clearly, right down to the root and a specialist endoscope makes it easy to probe lungs and stomach for potential problems. Henley House was one of the first vets in the area to use non-invasive, pain free laser treatment which has so many different uses ranging from kidney and dental problems to post op pain and arthritis treatment.

The practice hosts Nurse Clinics where people can obtain advice about all aspects of health care and many clients use a monthly care plan which covers all routine procedures and offers discounts as well. In January, there will be an open day so that owners can come and ask questions, tour the facilities and see what Chris and his team have achieved in building a practice that places an unequivocal love of animals at its centre. l Henley House Veterinary Clinic 2 London Road, Uckfield, East Sussex TN22 1HX 01825 766099 info@henleyhousevets.co.uk henleyhousevets.co.uk January 2019 | SUSSEX LIVING 51

BOOK REVIEW

Elizabeth Kay offers Sussex Living readers her thoughts on recent reads that have caught her attention. She gives her views on a selection of books from different genres which may capture your interest

LONESOME BOG AND LITTLE DOG

The bog is personified as a sprite creature, who is just as lonely as the stray dog

by Iona Tulloch and Harry Woodgate (Little Forest Publishing) This is a picture book for preschool children, and can be read by slightly older ones. The illustrations are scribbly and fun, with little snippets of newspaper text inserted as part of the pictures, giving them a collage effect. The bog is personified as a sort of sprite creature, who is just as lonely as the little stray dog who runs away from persecution by other local canines, and finds himself there where he knows he won’t be followed. This is because the bog has a bad

FAR HORIZONS

by Frank Gardner (Bantam) Frank Gardner will be known to many people as the wheelchair-bound security correspondent for the BBC. He has always had the urge to travel, and this book charts some of his journeys from his gap year, student days, and territorial army trips. In 2004 he was shot six times and survived, although his cameraman, Simon Cumbers, was killed. He was left partially paralysed,

I did think some of the things were foolhardy, but then I was no better in my teens

reputation; misty and muddy, and things get lost there – but the bog sprite shows him all the wonderful plants and animals that live in and around it. Eventually the dog asks to know the way out. The lonesome bog is very upset, but shows him the way. It all ends happily. The little dog persuades all the local dogs and their owners to follow him to the bog, and shows them the beetles, butterflies, dragonflies, frogs and birds. My only criticism is the use of bored of, rather than bored with.

but has shown little interest in curtailing his activities, as he has since managed a birdwatching trip to Papua New Guinea, surely one of the most inhospitable destinations possible! I had been to many of the places he mentions, and consequently found a lot of the information was well known to me. I did think some of the things he did were foolhardy, but then I was no better when I was in my teens. Gardner writes well, and there’s a lot of local colour and attention to detail. However, I found the account of his injuries and recovery rather sparse, but this may be because it’s dealt with more fully in his earlier book, Blood and Sand. An absorbing read, and illustrated with some of Gardner’s own photographs and sketches.

THE COWS

Dawn O’Porter (Harper Collins) Although this book is ostensibly light reading about three women in their thirties, it’s really about the power of social media and the devastating effect one brief clip on YouTube can have on someone’s life. Tara is a single mother, working in the media, who does one stupid thing that is videoed by a stranger on a train. Cam is a popular blogger, confident on a computer but far less so in real life. She is one of the very few people who stands up for Tara online. Stella is a twin whose sister has died. She was the unpopular one, and has medical issues that making having a baby rather urgent. Eventually all three women’s lives interlink, but there is a shock ending that I didn’t see coming at all. None of the characters are perfect, and sympathising with them is hard at times – but isn’t that real life? The beginning of the book is a little confusing as the viewpoints of the different people change rapidly, but once you’ve got the hang of the characters it’s easier to read. I read it on holiday, which is probably the best way!

LEGAL MATTERS

A New

Chapter At a difficult time of life, such as when you are facing a divorce, you want as much support as possible. Lisa de Silva covers some of the options here to make it as easy as possible for you and your family

A

ccording to official statistics 42% of all marriages end in divorce. The impact on those involved in terms of the emotional heartache and financial burden can be traumatic, but recent years have seen developments in the legal world to help ease the process. What’s more, there is now a trend for celebrating this life-changing event with a divorce party, to shift emotions of loss and failure to those of rebirth and renewal. Here we take a look at the different legal processes and options available when a relationship breaks down, along with looking at ways to navigate the emotional landscape of divorce. GROUNDS FOR DIVORCE Under the Matrimonial Causes Act 1973 (England and Wales), anyone seeking a divorce must prove that a partner is at fault through adultery, desertion or unreasonable behaviour. Alternatively, if both parties agree, a divorce can be granted after two years of separation. If there is no consent from either party or no evidence of fault, a couple have to have lived apart for five years in order to divorce. These legal requirements can make a divorce a lengthy process and needlessly acrimonious with the need to appoint blame. Currently, the government is preparing to launch a public debate on proposals to modernise the divorce laws with a ‘no

56 SUSSEX LIVING | January 2019

fault’ option. If this is passed into law, it would mean that the sole grounds for divorce will be the ‘irretrievable breakdown of a marriage,’ making the process less confrontational and much quicker to process. THE IMPORTANCE OF PROFESSIONAL ADVICE & EXPERTISE Negotiating the legal language and processes of divorce can be challenging, particularly at a time of enormous emotional upheaval and the support, expertise and experience of a legal professional cannot be underestimated. Many family law solicitors offer an

initial consultation for a fixed fee, which will help you to understand how the grounds for divorce and issues relating to children and finances apply to your specific circumstances. Splitting up property, pensions and assets can be a minefield and professional legal advice allows you to make an informed decision as to how to proceed.

The government is preparing to modernise the divorce laws with a ‘no fault’ option For those who decide to forgo professional help and opt for a DIY divorce, there are two major risks: firstly, if one partner feels hurt and hard done by during the process it can lead to a contested divorce, which is a hugely expensive and long drawn out procedure; secondly, it is important to understand that a decree nisi simply dissolves a marriage, it does not cover financial arrangements and without a separate legally binding consent order covering finances, both parties can be vulnerable to a future claim on their property, pensions and assets. THE LEGAL PROCESSES OF DIVORCE In recent years the legal system has

recognised the damaging emotional and financial impact of divorce and has introduced a number of new resolution services in an attempt to minimise the effects of divorcing on couples and families. The aim is to try to make divorce more collaborative, open and transparent in order to achieve a fair outcome as quickly and cost-effectively as possible without costly court proceedings. Divorcing couples can now choose from a wide range of options which include: DIY DIVORCE A DIY divorce is where both parties negotiate their own agreement before instructing a solicitor to make what has been decided legally binding. While this may seem the most cost-effective way of divorcing, without the help of a legal professional to alert you to your rights and the full implications of your agreement, things can go wrong. MEDIATION In this scenario a couple appoints an independent and impartial mediator trained to resolve issues raised by divorce such as childcare arrangements and the division of property, pensions and assets. Often mediators are trained solicitors and so have the legal expertise to ensure a fair outcome for both parties. Once agreements have been reached, the mediator prepares a Memorandum of Understanding which is taken to a solicitor to be made legally binding. This reduces solicitor costs and can help to make the process less acrimonious.

58 SUSSEX LIVING | January 2019

COLLABORATIVE PRACTISE This aims to resolve issues face to face with the couple and their respective lawyers sitting down together to settle any issues and reach an agreement. There is no need for lengthy rounds of legal correspondence or for costly court proceedings. ARBITRATION Family arbitration is a quicker and cheaper option than going to court. An arbitrator is appointed by a couple to hear both party’s case and make a decision based on the evidence. It can be used for just one issue if necessary, for example if you agree about everything aside from pension rights, arbitration can be used to resolve the issue. LAW COURT DIVORCE Both parties appoint a lawyer and communication is exclusively through legal channels, before court proceedings in which a judge will make the final decision on what is a fair outcome in terms of childcare and the splitting of property, pensions and assets. Needless to say, this type of divorce is extremely expensive and usually involves a lengthy timescale.

Divorce is a major life event and there is a growing trend to support this landmark occasion with a Divorce Party. A party is a chance to celebrate this time of rebirth with friends and family and can help you to look forward.

In a bid to bring nature back into children’s stories, author Robert Macfarlane and artist Jackie Morris have created a beautifully illustrated book of spells to renew and engage children in the love of the wild

rom 19 January, Nymans will host an exciting new programme of activities based around the book The Lost Words, which is a unique collaborative project between renowned writer Robert Macfarlane (author of The Old Ways and Landmarks) and artist Jackie Morris (The White Fox, Tell Me a Dragon). Taking the form of a collection of illustrated spell poems, the book combines their considerable creative talents to celebrate the relationship between language and the living world, and nature’s power to spark the imagination. The Lost Words is also a response to Macfarlane and Morris’s

Words

Robert Mcfarlane says, “The Lost Words exhibition could hardly have a more natural or perfect habitat than Nymans” belief that nature is in retreat from our children’s stories and imaginations. A survey of British primary school children found 8-11 year-olds were “substantially better” able to identify types of Pokémon characters than species of common UK wildlife. Robert Macfarlane has created a series of 20 spell-poems, one for each lost word. While Jackie Morris, inspired by her lifelong passion for Britain’s landscapes and wildlife, has painted more than 50 beautiful watercolours - using gold leaf to take the viewer on a journey that makes the familiar appear magical once more. Jackie comments, “I want The Lost Words to delight the mind and the eye and send children to sleep dreaming of wild things.” Robert Macfarlane says, “Jackie and I have worked for two years to make a ‘spell-book’ that might by the old magic of poem, spell and icon – re-wild the language we use and the stories we tell about the everyday nature that surrounds us and of which we are part.” 60 SUSSEX LIVING | January 2019

The gallery at Nymans will be hosting an exhibition of original artwork from the book and on Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 January Jackie Morris will be in the gallery to share the stories behind the pictures in The Lost Words. She’ll be there between 11am–3pm, ready to take questions while watching her paint. A dedicated programme of events and activities is planned which will encourage children and adults to renew their love of nature, inspired by The Lost

Words. During this time, you’ll be able to take a self-led poetry walk around the garden, pick up a nature explorer activity, or enjoy a seasonal pop-up seasonal tour. Both the Head Gardener and ranger team will be giving special guided tours each month exploring the wonders of the natural world in the garden and surrounding woodland. At February half term Nymans will be making bird feeders to encourage feathered friends into your garden by making a simple bird feeder. The event will run between Saturday 16 and Sunday 24 February, 11am–3pm. The Lost Words touring exhibition events are listed on the Nymans website www.nationaltrust.org.uk/nymans l

Care for Couples at The Laurels

A

significant number of elderly people who need to go into a care home are currently living with their spouse and very often the thought of being separated from their partner can be heart breaking. Frequently a partner is remaining in the family home and perhaps feeling guilty that they can no longer provide the care their companion needs. Sometimes both partners are in need of care and yet their needs are very different, again leading to them being separated at this time. In order to address the issue of couples with different care needs, The Laurels Nursing Home in Hastings aims to specifically support couples who want to stay together. The home has now introduced a new luxury suite alongside its 50 bedrooms in a homely environment. The suite provides every home comfort including smart TV with video

stream and modern music system with the added benefit of 24 hour care. The spacious room offers a seating area with views to the garden through a Juliette balcony, an en-suite and, most importantly, the opportunity for couples to be together. “This valued addition to our accommodation can be adapted to support single or double occupation either for respite care or on a permanent basis,” Sally Bossom from The Laurels told us. “We welcome visitors and would love to show you what we have to offer at The Laurels.” From landscaped gardens with a soothing water feature to tastefully decorated rooms, a cinema room and the all-important home cooked meals, The Laurels is certainly worth visiting if you are thinking of the next stage in life for yourself or your loved ones. CHARITY

IT’S ALL ABOUT CHARITY

Volunteer in the New Year with the Association of Carers Could you spare as little as 30 minutes a week to help improve a carer’s life? A Hastings-based charity which supports unpaid carers in East Sussex is looking for volunteers to join their team. An unpaid carer comes in many shapes and sizes but is, essentially, a person who spends time looking after someone else who would not be able to manage without their help. It is often adult children caring for parents, husbands or wives looking after their spouses, or parents caring for children with complex needs (including grown-up children). Some unpaid carers carry-out the role on a 24/7 basis. The Association of Carers was set-up in 1987 after recognising that many carers needed support in their roles, and receiving help could improve and preserve their mental and physical wellbeing. They provide support in a variety of ways, including: Respite visits a volunteer will spend up to 3 hours with a cared-for person, so the

66 SUSSEX LIVING | January 2019

carer can have a break. The volunteer might spend time chatting over a cup of tea, playing games, or reading with the person they are visiting. Or they may simply sit with a person who is asleep, making sure they are kept safe. Computer help – a volunteer will teach a carer some basic skills on a computer, laptop, smart phone or similar. The sort of skills that will enable the carer to do online shopping or banking, keep in touch with family, or order repeat prescriptions. Seemingly simple tasks that can make a carer’s life a bit easier. Telephone support – a volunteer will carry out this role from their own home. A carer will call at a pre-arranged time for 30 minutes to discuss their caring role in confidence with a supportive listener. Charity shop worker - the Association of Carers’ charity shop in Hastings raises essential funds which are used to support the other services they offer. Jane Caley, who works for the charity, says volunteers would ideally commit regular times for at least a year. This enables, carers, volunteers and the person being cared for the chance to settle into a routine and build strong relationships. However, even if you couldn’t commit for this long, they would still love to hear from you. The time commitment is fairly low level – as little as 30 minutes a week – and it is possible to be flexible and work around people’s lives. A full induction is offered to volunteers, and there is on-going support and training opportunities, such as safeguarding, first aid, listening skills and more. If you are interested in volunteering with the Association of Carers, or finding out more about what they do, you can learn more and fill in a form on their website www.associationofcarers.org.uk or call 01424 722309.
