CASTLE CHARACTERS ARRIVE AT BODIAM CASTLE

RYE ARTS FESTIVAL The 48th annual Rye Arts Festival (14-28 September 2019) will feature around 60 events, including world class classical and contemporary musicians, literary events, historical talks, walks, drama, cinema and much more. Tickets for 12 key events have already gone on sale, including talks by Sir Max Hastings on the Dambusters Raid and Kate Bradbury on wildlife gardening. And one of the world’s top baritones Roderick Williams will sing Schubert’s Schwanengesang. HASTINGS FISH FESTIVAL

This year’s Midsummer Fish Festival takes place on the Stade open space, in the heart of Hastings Old Town, within casting distance of the town’s historic fishing fleet. The event takes place over the weekend of 22/23 June, with tickets costing £1.50 in advance, from Hastings Tourist Information Centre (in Breeds Place, on the seafront by the fountain), or £3 on the gate (under 18s free). As well as live music all weekend, there will be a great selection of food and drink from local restaurants, street vendors, and bakeries, as well as local brewers, wine makers, plus free cooking demos and children’s activities taking place in the Stade Hall. Visitors to Bodiam Castle this spring and summer will discover a new castle characters display where the people who would have lived and worked at a medieval castle will be brought to life through eight child sized illustrations. THE ROYAL PAVILION, BRIGHTON

Built as King George IV’s pleasure palace when Brighton was the heart of fashionable Regency society, the Royal Pavilion was also used by King William IV and Queen Victoria. CHARLESTON IN COLOUR – SICKERT TO RILEY Running until 26 August, Charleston’s second exhibition in the new Wolfson Gallery positions the work of former Charleston residents – Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant – within a century of great British colourists. Bell and Grant were two of the first abstract painters in Britain, and their modernist treatment of colour broke with accepted artistic conventions. Viewed in the context of 20th century abstraction, these painters of the Bloomsbury group can be seen as the radicals they were, producing works which saw colour dominate composition as the most vital component of an image. providing a temporary base whilst renovations began on the farmhouse. “We chose our architect carefully,” says Lisa. “His utilitarian design blends perfectly amongst the existing farm buildings and the steel curved roof of the new extension snuggles up to the original house without making it disappear. The glass linkway enables both old and new to stand proud as separate entities,” Lisa explains. In the new extension a large open plan family space combines kitchen, informal dining area, snug and playroom. With a central fireplace and a vast expanse of folding glass doors there is a wonderful sense of light and connection with nature. Upstairs the wood lined arched roof is home to the master bedroom suite, complete with a magnificent 180-degree vista window. “The new space is incredible – it’s our own personal sanctuary,” says Lisa. “At night the original structure comes into its own with the low ceilings, small windows and more cocooned feel of the sitting room and dining

Upstairs the children sleep in two of the original bedrooms; and a former master bedroom and bathroom have been converted into a new family bathroom and staircase gateway. “We have lowered floors, re-insultated the roof and walls, taken out the old kitchen and knocked down a study wall to create a larger sitting room space,” says Lisa. Harnessing radical thinking and some lambs, Jamie Feilden set about changing the way disadvantaged children are taught. He tells Ruth Lawrence about how Jamie’s Farm was born and where they are today

ocial and academic exclusion are the reality for many young people today. As a result those children are finding it difficult to discover their potential as adults and their wellbeing and employability suffer. So how can we stop this? Could farming be the answer? Back in 2005, Jamie Feilden was teaching in a Croydon comprehensive; shocked by the lack of engagement he was witnessing, he decided to bring some lambs from his farm in Wiltshire into the school for pupils to look after. It immediately became clear that the children with the greatest social

jobs with real purpose, which, when combined with therapy and a loving framework of support, sparked powerful, long reaching results. Once thirty five pilot weeks had proved how successful their approach was, they realised they needed a farm converted specifically for purpose. The first ‘Jamie’s Farm’ was launched near Bath in 2009 and remains the charity’s HQ; ten years later there are four rural farms and a city farm in Waterloo, the most recent, here in Sussex, sits in beautiful countryside near Lewes.

He decided, along with his mother, Tish, who had 30 years of experience as a UKCP Registered Psychotherapist, to develop a method using farming, family and therapy to invite children to participate in during weeklong visits to the family home. conversations about how to succeed after they return; most of the young people are from urban areas and this is usually the first time they have experienced tending for animals in a rural environment. After their transformative time at the farm they are supported in re-engaging in their school and community with the help of their teachers. Their parents are sent a letter outlining their achievements and six weeks later,

Jamie explained how visiting children will be given responsible tasks on the 200 acre farm which will boost their self-esteem and, when combined with therapy and family life, will enable them to take what they have experienced back to their own lives across the south coast, Kent and South London. There will be practical

Monthly giving will support the costs of running visits here whilst their immediate need is raising funds towards a minibus. I visited the farm when there was a group of young ‘ambassadors’ staying. These are children and young adults who have spent time at the other farms and developed in confidence to the point where they were helping to launch this project. I spoke to sixteenyear-old Georgie (which incidentally means ‘farmer’), a young man from London brimming with newly discovered potential, now keen to work

in farming or start his own business. He told me the Jamie’s Farm Ambassador programme has helped him work out that he enjoys being a leader as it gives him more responsibility and his suggestions are listened to. He explained how “everyone is very open, warm and loving here; you can be who you want to be and not be scrutinised which gives me the potential to be myself.” He appreciated the fact that “people listen to you like family and having one to one attention is a real bonus.” During his times on the farms Georgie told me he had come to discover that, “It’s easier to be myself after being here; I used to be antisocial and this has helped me come out of my shell and express how I feel.” He felt the experience has also so much from simply being listened to, given him “respect for being given responsibility and having the food on my plate a sense of cohesive interaction with because you learn how others was humbling; testimonials much effort it takes like his are the proof that Jamie’s to rear lamb.” He Farms are working brilliantly at what mentioned how living they set out to do. erstmonceux is a charming and ancient village situated just north of Eastbourne, with a single parade of shops spread along Gardner Street – the village’s original name. The name Herstmonceux derives its origins from the 12th century when Idonea, the Saxon heiress of the Manor of Herst, married a Norman knight with land in Wartling - Ingelram de Monceux. Appropriately, given the local topography, the Anglo-Saxon word hyrst means wooded hill. Herstmonceux’s most famous landmark is its magnificent moated castle. Surrounded by elegant Elizabethan gardens and over three

hundred acres of beautiful parkland, this imposing and picturesque medieval edifice sits two miles south-east of the village. As one of the earliest examples of a brick-built building in England, it was built in the mid 15th century – harmoniously combining the rich history of medieval England and the romance of renaissance Europe. The castle has passed through a number of hands over the centuries, including a long early period of ownership by the eminent Fiennes dynasty. Sir Roger

Fiennes, a descendant of the Monceux family, was responsible for the original construction of the castle. The Castle was abandoned in 1776 and gradually deteriorated into a ruin until Colonel Claude Lowther, a distinguished soldier and politician, bought it in 1911 and employed local craftsmen to carry out extensive renovation work. After he died, it was

fen vegetation. This narrow stream valley is the location of two plants which are rare in south-east England – milk-parsley and Cornish moneywort. There are several artificial ponds which have a variety of aquatic plant species and a public footpath runs through the site. The nearby Pevensey Levels, which lies partially within the parish, also has SSSI status. The site consists of lowlying grazing meadows that host a wide variety of wetland flora and fauna. It has many nationally rare invertebrates and is arguably the best site in Britain for freshwater mollusc fauna, including

Trugmaking dates as far back as the 16th century. A number of local craftspeople still preserve this ancient tradition today. The village, which is twinned with Varengeville-sur-Mer in Normandy, is part of the larger Herstmonceux civil parish, which includes Cowbeech and the hamlets of Foul Mile, Trolliloes, Cowbeech Hill, Stunts Green, Ginger's Green, Flowers Green and part of Windmill Hill. l

ealden Dementia Action Alliance, supported by Wealden District Council was set up three years ago and has grown each year. There are now six forums across the district who are working towards making Wealden dementia friendly. The forums are based in Uckfield, Polegate, Crowborough, Hailsham, Ninfield and Wadhurst and by working with local groups, services, volunteers and local people they want everyone to have a better awareness and It is estimated that by 2035 there will be an additional 7,500 understanding of dementia. The local forums are finding out what the gaps people with dementia in East Sussex. igh Trees Garden in Seaford will be opening its gates again this year on Saturday 29th June to raise funds for Alzheimer’s Research UK, following its successful inaugural opening for the charity in 2018. Garden owners, Susan and Tony Luckin have been opening their garden annually since 2013, raising funds for charitable causes including Seaford in Bloom, the Seaford Mayor’s Trail and the National Garden Scheme. In the first year opening its gates to the public, High Trees garden scooped four awards in the Seaford in Bloom Competition: ‘Best Back Garden’, ‘Best New Entry’, ‘Best Hanging Basket’ and ‘Best Overall Entry.’ The garden raised a total of £1300 for charity in 2018, with £875 raised for Alzheimer’s Research UK. The couple wanted to support Alzheimer’s Research UK in memory of Susan’s mother, Daisy, who lived with vascular dementia and passed away in 2017 after celebrating her 100th birthday. “Living with dementia is a terrible disease which affects not only the individual but their whole family. By sharing our love of gardening with others, we are able to open our garden and raise funds to contribute to vital research that hopefully will one day cure this awful illness for future generations,” says Susan. Visitors will be able to enjoy the beautiful gardens, the secret woodland and the serene koi pond as well as discovering a brand new feature in the 48 SUSSEX LIVING | May 2019

Now a nationally renowned garden opening and raising thousands for charity, Ruth Lawrence talks to the man behind Driftwood in Seaford, Geoff Stonebanks

ne of Sussex Living’s very own contributors, Geoff Stonebanks, has created a nationally renowned garden from an exposed site close to the coast at Seaford and I went along to find out how he has conjured so much magic from such a compact plot. After looking at 140 properties, Geoff and his partner Mark found and purchased ‘Driftwood’, a 1930s house overlooking the sea and started gardening with only limited knowledge and no real plan in mind. Over the years the garden has evolved into a haven bursting with 1600 varieties of plants and shrubs. They first opened to the public for the first time for Seaford in Bloom after friends kept suggesting that people would love to see it. By 2012, Driftwood was opening on its

competition. Hamish Webb, one of the judges praised the garden as being “up there with the best” after seeing hundreds of gardens over his 21 years of judging the competition. After being featured by most of the major dailies weekend magazines and having slots on national TV, the garden has welcomed 20,000 visitors so far and raised a staggering £114,000 for charity over the years. Primarily, the money raised by the Driftwood Fundraising Group has been focused on Macmillan Cancer Support and in 2018, Geoff was invited to a Macmillan Cancer Support Reception at Buckingham Palace hosted by HRH Prince of Wales. A few months later, Geoff was invited to a Royal Garden Party at Buckingham Palace and took his 91 year old mother Barbara, who wore a splendid hat which was immediately noticed by Camilla after Prince Charles shook her hand! In the same year, Geoff was awarded the Don Mabey Award for “exceptional services to the town of Seaford” presented by the mayor, Cllr Linda Wallraven. Geoff admits that the garden has “changed his life” and is constantly “amazed at the impact a garden can have on your life.” He has had coach visits from Sweden, a group of ladies visiting from Tokyo and a family who travelled from Beijing to see the garden. Although Geoff has never regarded himself as an expert, he hosts a personal guided tour of the garden, detailing the story of its development with all proceeds going to Macmillan Cancer Support. This year, Driftwood will be opening for five garden events including ‘Art in the Garden’ where twelve artists’ work will be creatively displayed in the beach inspired setting. Homemade teas and cakes and light lunches will be served on vintage china in the garden and a grand raffle for artist donated prizes will support Macmillan, with over £65,000 raised for them to date. Some plants have got the lot – they look good and do you good. Flo Whitaker recommends planting some handsome vegetables in your flower borders

here are reasons why a traditional vegetable garden looks the way it does. Centuries of trial and error has come up with a system that’s hard to beat. Crops grown in neat rows take up less space and are easier to water and harvest, but if there’s no room in your garden for a designated veg plot you can still grow some vegetables. Many have great ornamental qualities and can be mingled through the flower borders to good effect. The yields will

be smaller this way, but it’s always fun to grow a few edibles. Carrots have elegant, border-worthy foliage. The small ball-type varieties don’t require much depth of soil and can also be grown in a container; likewise radishes, which are very quick to crop. Incidentally, radish flowers are beautiful – a few roots left unharvested will produce delicate flowers in gentle mauve and cream shades. Wigwam supports are quick and easy to make. Use bamboo canes or hazel poles firmly bound at the top with string. Each support needs to be spaced approximately 20 cms from its neighbour and pushed 15cms into the soil (keep that in mind when considering the eventual height of the plants you want to support!). A tall wigwam of French or runner beans makes a bold statement in a border. The annual climber, Ipomoea lobata, (‘Spanish Flag’) can be combined with runner beans. Vigorous by nature, it will easily keep up with the rapid

growth of the bean plants and bears unusual blooms in graduating shades of red/orange/yellow. Mangetout peas have dainty flowers, are easy to grow and will quickly scramble up a support. Some varieties have snazzy pink or purple pods. Courgettes and squash can be trained up a wigwam or over a trellis arch. Some gardeners actually prefer this method, reckoning the additional airflow makes for less mildew/rot problems. Make sure your supports are sturdy as these plants will become heavy as they start to crop. Cut-and-come-again lettuce is surely the easiest vegetable of all. It’s best grown in a patio pot where the leaves will remain cleaner. Beetroot seedlings are my latest salady-obsession. You’ll require a seed tray filled with general purpose compost, sharp scissors and a heart of stone, for once you’ve snipped and harvested the cress-like leaves, the seedlings die – but they are so delicious, with the distinctive taste and colour of mature beetroot. They look fabulous scattered over a green salad. Lettuces and violas aren’t an obvious combination, but make surprisingly companionable bedfellows. Violas enjoy the shade cast by the developing lettuces and if you grow dark-leaved lettuce, really interesting colour combinations may occur. Viola flowers are edible and make a pretty garnish for summer cordials – or a G&T! l

It’s a Dog’s Life Teddy the Border Terrier is venturing out and about this month and he is quite partial to a bit of motorhoming, writes Helen Stockton, the pen behind the paw

ell the year is progressing, the weather improving and holidays are looming! The concept of the perfect holiday is a bit subjective, but if I had to vote, it’d be motorhoming, paws down. Now I’m a dog who likes to keep my family within sight; I’ve already lost one owner and I’m not about to let that happen again, so a motorhome is ideal, after all it’s everything you need in a small space and there is little opportunity for your nearest and dearest to go out of sight for more than a few minutes. I have a special bed that fits in between the front cab seats and there’s blown air heating with the outlets at the perfect height for a small dog with a strong sense of

alignment, so what more could I ask for. The Boss, Rolo, used to like that kind of holiday too when he was alive, and he was the master of escape. On caravan sites, dogs are supposed to be kept on tethers, but

that’s nothing to a small dog with determination. ‘Them Indoors’ made the mistake of thinking the awning was a secure location with its firmly pegged down sides, but the Boss launched his own great escape under the flaps and was eventually returned on a borrowed lead to a frantic ‘Her Indoors’, having appeared in someone else’s caravan because they were cooking something tasty. You’ve got to admire his style! I too, have launched my own successful escape bid. When we were away recently, ‘Her Indoors’ went to go outside and as she was poised in the doorway, she witnessed a caravan accidentally uncoupling from its hitch to the towing car, and rolling back down the hill towards a parked motorhome. In all the excitement, I escaped and ran after it barking, with ‘Him Indoors’ running after me. He managed to catch me, and the caravan ran into the verge of its own accord so no-one was hurt, but I like to think I added to the sense of drama.

I have a special bed that fits in between the front cab seats One of the advantages of being on holiday is that I get to try out different forms of transport. I went on a train recently and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The Guard, having noticed me getting on, made a point of seeking me out. I was a bit worried initially, as I didn’t have a ticket, but fortunately ‘Them Indoors’ did and the Guard was a dog lover who just wanted to say hello and give me a quick ear tickling, which was fine by me. I had a similar experience on a bus when one of the fellow passengers turned out to be a Border Terrier owner too. He had some shopping so he opened his packet of crunchy nut cornflakes especially to share. I notice none of the other passengers got any. Still, holidays are supposed to be about eating and drinking unfamiliar things as well as having different experiences so this ticked all the boxes. Happy days! l 54 SUSSEX LIVING | May 2019

The protagonists in this are teenagers, and as it’s set in the US most of them have cars and drive to school. It took me a while to get into it, as there are a lot of things that are unfamiliar to British kids, and there are several narrators. That’s a lot of characters to get to know, as you need to understand their parents and friends as well. But once you’ve got over that initial hurdle, this book is terrific. Fast-moving, full of plot twists, and I didn’t guess the ending. Five kids are given a detention for carrying mobile phones in their bags. They all deny that the phones are theirs, and as they have other handsets it seems very plausible that they’ve been set up. Especially when one of the five

I feel a little uncomfortable using the word entertaining or amusing about a book such as this, but there’s no doubt that the device of the reader seeing things far more clearly than the main character gives you the same feeling as getting questions right on Mastermind. Susan says exactly what

THE SILENCE OF THE GIRLS by Pat Barker (Hamish Hamilton) I don’t usually recommend violent books, but this is different. Nothing is gratuitous; this is Ancient Greece during the Trojan War, and the picture it paints of death, torture, plague, and enslavement is so real you can almost taste it. Women were meant to stay in the background and say nothing, whatever happened to them, and what did happen was very unpleasant indeed.

When Achilles sacked Lyrnessus and killed her husband and brothers, she was awarded to him as a prize. Her subsequent transition from a free woman to an object that could be traded sounds totally authentic. She was the cause of the dispute between Agamemnon and Achilles, which led to the death of Patroclus, Achilles’ soulmate, and the only really sympathetic male character. Achilles is depicted as a complex person, half thug and half abandoned child, which gives some insight into his behaviour. Like Mary Renault, Pat Barker can weave mythical elements into a story so that we can see how the people of the time believed in the supernatural although the present-day reader can see both the psychological and the scientific explanations. Compulsive reading.

s we walked over to meet Chris, Rob revealed that he has always been a keen golfer whereas my experience consisted of a wet Saturday afternoon spent resentfully struggling round the Crazy Golf course at Blackpool over forty years ago while my parents escaped for a walk. I doubted my ability to hit the ball let alone see it disappearing swiftly inside a hole, but I was game to try. Chris immediately got me practising my swing and soon I vaguely knew what I was supposed to be aiming for. The first few attempts were embarrassingly inept but before long I was confidently managing to hit the ball in approximately the right direction. Eventually I cracked it and the ball went sailing satisfyingly high, landing very close to the hole, which seemed miles away to my inexperienced eye. “Perhaps it’d be good to end while you’re ahead,” Chris said diplomatically and I nodded with relief as we headed back to the car park; time to put away the clubs and find out more about the intriguing history of golf. The game originated on the east coast of Scotland in the fifteenth century; players would hit a pebble round a

natural course of sand dunes, tracks and rabbit runs using a stick. Although there were plenty of other stick and ball games from which golf could have originated, they were all missing the ingredient that marks out golf as unique - the hole. During the mid 15th century as Scotland was defending itself against an English invasion, golf, along with soccer were banned by King James II because men were more enthusiastic about these pursuits than military training which concentrated mainly on

archery. The ban was finally lifted in 1502 with the Treaty of Glasgow and it rapidly gained in popularity partly due to royal endorsement by King Charles I, who spread the game through England. Mary Queen of Scots, who was French, introduced the game over there while she was studying; the name ‘caddie’ stems from the name given to her helpers who were cadets from the French military. The top golf course at that time was in Leith near Edinburgh. The town of St Andrews had its own golf course by 1552; the clergy allowed public access to the links and two centuries later the St Andrews Society of Golfers was formed to compete in its own annual competition. An 18 hole course was constructed, which became the standard and it was here that the world’s first women’s golf club was formed in 1895. King William honoured the club with the title ‘Royal and Ancient’ in 1834 which led to it becoming the premier club because of its fine course, the publication of its rules and its royal patronage. Golfers had by this time developed clubs with heads made from beech or apple and some from hand forged iron.

SECTION SUBJECT Shafts and handles were usually hazel or ash while balls were constructed from stitched horse hide containing tightly packed feathers. The expense of the equipment made the sport somewhat exclusive and after 1826, hickory and persimmon were imported from the USA to make shafts and club heads respectively. Golf rapidly spread throughout the British Empire and the Victorian industrial revolution brought about many social and economic changes including mass tourism, spread by the growth of railways. Ordinary people could now explore widely as day trippers and this led to an explosion of clubs all over the country allowing people to enjoy the challenge of a different course every weekend. Once metal club heads and shafts began to be mass produced, golf was no longer the preserve of the rich and it quickly grew in popularity and soon became a professional sport. The first international golf tournament was the Amateur Golf Championship of India and the East in 1893 and a year later the United States Golf Association was formed to regulate the game in the US and Mexico. As the game attracted media attention, the first monthly magazine, ‘Golf’ was published in the USA in 1897 and it was confirmed as an Olympic sport in 1900. Technical innovations meant that golfers could hit the new rubber cored balls further and more accurately than before and with the exception of the war years, golf grew in popularity and professionalism over the decades. Perhaps the most famous golf shot ever made had to be that taken by Alan Shepard in 1971, not here on earth but on the moon’s surface, watched by an audience of millions. Golf had grown from an exclusively rich, male sport into a global pursuit, enjoyed by people the world over regardless of colour, sex, age or salary. As Rob takes to the course for his lesson, he shares with Chris the story of his own golfing journey: At eight years old my grandparents took me to the pitch and putt golf course at

Walking down the fairway, I imagined I was Severiano Ballesteros who had just won the ’79 Open Championship. On either side the fictitious galleries cheered my arrival on the green. I duly obliged, one putted, plucked the ball from the hole, raised the fictional claret jug and basked in the applause of my grandparents.

So I put the clubs away for a while to concentrate on primary school. Years later and schooling behind me I picked up the clubs again, though it was clear that most of my talent had dissipated over time. I ruined many walks along well-manicured fairways, diverting into the rough, the bunkers

and the woods to find my ‘lucky ball.’ Unperturbed I even spent my hard earned cash on a yellow golf sweater because Nick Faldo wore one. When I did play, I would jump around with delight the few times I managed to score under 100. After which I would leave the practice green and head for the first tee to begin my round. I remained unfazed and realised a good round of golf was always played with someone slightly worse than myself – although finding someone of this calibre was often a task in itself. I once took sixteen shots to get out of a green side bunker and needed a ladder to climb out, after displacing so much sand. Eventually, the penny dropped and it became clear I might never be like Seve. Then I met golfing guru Chris White. Chris has taught golf for 54 years and comes from a golfing family that includes his father and two brothers, all of whom, played professionally. In his youth, Chris was Sussex and Surrey Junior champion “I was a big fish in a small pond, but the higher I got, the better the standard and the harder it was to win.” He won a few local tournaments and was more successful than his modesty allowed him to divulge. After briefing Chris on my golfing history, he summed it up succinctly,

â&#x20AC;&#x153;A bad golfer remembers only the good shots in contrast to the expert golfer who remembers the poor shoots. A bad golfer usually goes home the happier.â&#x20AC;? In 1962 at the age of 18, when Chris turned professional, tournament golf wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t played on a Sunday. The final two rounds of a tournament would be on a Saturday. Chris recalled a time when Peter Alliss the commentator, who

was once the best player in England, won a tournament on a Saturday. The following day he was seen tutoring the 75 year-old wife of the club President. Back in the swinging sixties playing â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;on tourâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; was not the corporate multinational enterprise that professional golf has become. It was club professionals like Chris who were good enough to compete at the highest level when club work permitted. As the tour developed, the number of full time golfers spending most of their time competing away from their

parent clubs increased, so a disparity in performance grew between them and the club professionals. The disparity became self-perpetuating and club professionals gradually found it harder to compete at the top level. â&#x20AC;&#x153;These days,â&#x20AC;? said Chris, â&#x20AC;&#x153;professional golf is more competitive than tennis. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s just so hard to make a living.â&#x20AC;? Nonetheless, as a club professional

Chris more than held his own. In 1967 he beat 1951 Open Championship winner Max Faulkner in an exhibition match. The following year Max won the Portuguese Open. In 1973 Chris took part in the French Open, before heading to Royal Troon to play two rounds in The Open Championship, won that year by American Tom Weiskopf. After his zenith, Chris spent more time teaching and less time competing. Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s taken 20-25,000 lessons over the years, which made him suitably qualified to resurrect my game. With patience, clear communication and a good sense of humour he did just that. With his eagle eyes, Chris adjusted my stance, advising me to swivel my trailing leg after striking the ball. He got me to focus on the underside of the ball rather than the top, to hit the ball on the down stroke, and to create a divot after striking the ball. Most importantly Chris advised me to â&#x20AC;&#x153;release the club as if throwing it.â&#x20AC;? All easier said that done, but within half a dozen attempts I was getting the hang of it. I left Chris with renewed hope and a great sense of gratitude. My cherished childhood dream of emulating Seve may yet come true! l

diverticulum is the name given to a small pouch which bulges out from any hollow structure in the body. The plural of diverticulum is diverticula. Diverticular disease of the colon is a disease of western civilisation. In the UK approximately half the population over 65 years of age have diverticular disease. Many people have the condition without realising, because it causes no symptoms and does them no harm. The condition is much less common in the developing world, possibly because of differences in diet. We cannot be entirely certain what causes diverticula to form in the colon. Increased pressure within the bowel probably forces pouches of bowel lining through points of weakness in the muscle layers to form diverticula. Studies have shown that diverticular disease is more common in those countries with a western diet – high in animal protein and fat and low in vegetable and cereal fibre. A low intake

of fibre results in a smaller volume of material passing through the colon. In these circumstances the pressures produced within the colon are higher. Thus, diverticular disease is thought to be one result of a low-fibre diet. There is no increased risk of cancer in diverticular disease. However, since diverticular disease and bowel cancer may cause similar symptoms, your doctor may want to be entirely sure that cancer has been excluded by arranging an X-ray of the colon (a barium enema or CT colonography) and, possibly,

Even though diverticular disease has a widespread prevalence, complications are surprisingly few but the following may occasionally occur: • Diverticulitis – inflammation due to bacterial infection and usually treated by antibiotics. • Perforation of a diverticulum which may cause peritonitis (a serious

condition requiring hospital admission), an abscess (collection of pus) or a fistula (a connection into the bladder or vagina). Any perforation may require surgical intervention. Most patients with diverticular disease do not have any symptoms, however, some patients experience: • a change in bowel habit (either more constipated or more loose than usual). • colicky discomfort, especially on the left side of the abdomen. • distension of the abdomen. Occasionally, there may be: • pain, which arises because the diverticula become inflamed (diverticulitis). • blood in the motions. If this occurs it should be reported to your doctor. For many patients simply increasing vegetable and cereal fibre in the diet will relieve their symptoms and return their bowel activity to normal. Fibre intake can be supplemented by adding coarse wheat bran to food (such as yoghurt, soup, gravy, mashed potatoes, cereals). Your doctor may prescribe fibre bulking agents, such as ispaghula husk. A few patients who still experience colicky pain and distension need treatment with drugs called anti-spasmodics. There are several such drugs some of which are available over the counter. Your doctor or pharmacist can advise. l

Rhubarb Iceâ&#x20AC;&#x2020;Cream

Field grown rhubarb is at the peak of its season in May and June, producing vibrant stems of shocking pink, mauve and even green. Make the most of this tangy taste bud tingler with some refreshing, grown up ice cream INGREDIENTS 500ml double cream 150ml full fat milk 1 vanilla pod 2 tsp vanilla extract 6 small egg yolks 360g caster sugar 1kg rhubarb, chopped 250ml water

Prep Time 30 minutes Cooking Time 30 minutes Serves 8

METHOD Put the cream and milk in to a saucepan and scrape in the seeds from the vanilla pod. Bring to the boil over a medium heat then put to one side and add the vanilla extract.

Whisk the eggs in a bowl with 120g 2 caster sugar until pale and thick. Gradually pour in the cream and milk mixture and whisk until combined. Pour the mixture back into a clean pan and heat on a low heat, stirring continuously with a wooden spoon until it thickens and coats the back of the spoon. Pour into a bowl and leave to cool.

Next put the rhubarb and remaining 3 sugar into a pan with the water. Bring to a simmer and cook for 10 minutes or until the rhubarb is soft and the liquid is reduced by half. Next pour the rhubarb into a blender and blitz then pour the mixture through a sieve leaving a smooth puree.

1 hour to thicken. Scoop and serve immediately or put the ice cream into a container and store in the freezer until needed. If you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have a machine pour the cooled custard mix into a container big enough to stir around, freeze for 30 minutes then take out and stir in the ice crystals. MENTAL HEALTH & WELLBEING SUPPORT FOR PEOPLE IN EAST SUSSEX The charity Porchlight’s service Aspirations provides free support in East Sussex for anyone who is not in work, and feels that their mental health is stopping them from achieving what they want in life. They help people find the right support for difficulties they are facing and will also help those feeling lonely or cut off to reconnect with others. “If you’re not active in your community or working, a mental health issue or other negative feelings can affect your self-belief and your chances of feeling more able to tackle life’s challenges,” explains Aspirations’ Barbara van Minnen. Poor mental health can have a knock-on effect in many areas of life. Because of this the service provides support with everything from health and housing to budgeting and employment. Every person’s situation is unique, so the service’s approach to helping is unique to each person. Ultimately, it helps people feel more confident in getting out and about, accessing advice and support with

Crematorium settings have come a long way since the first in 1885, up to the modern and sleek Wealden Crematorium, as Peter Griggs tells us

t was back in 1885 that this country saw its first official cremation. This was at the Woking Crematorium, in nearby Surrey, when on 26th March 1885 a certain Mrs Jeannette C. Pickersgill, whom a national newspaper described as “a well-known figure in literary and scientific circles” was cremated. Over the years more and more crematoriums opened until today when there are 316 operating in the UK, with around 77% of the population now opting for cremation. Most of our crematoriums were built in Victorian times or earlier when car ownership was a luxury, not an essential, and usually sited in urban areas. Whilst this suited those living in the towns and cities these crematoriums now find that they are struggling to

meet the increasing demand and have insufficient parking for their visitors. Wealden’s modern new crematorium which has just opened has been designed to address these problems and has much more to offer. You will find it nestling in the countryside just outside the village of Horam which lays midway between Eastbourne and Tunbridge Wells on the A267. Its rural setting and sensitive design

Services at hourly intervals will ensure that nobody feels rushed. The interior design, furnishings and colours have all been carefully chosen to enhance the overall feeling of tranquillity and peace. Wealden District Council, which owns and operates the crematorium, is keen to let the public see the care it has taken with this project and plans to have a public open day where people

can look around the grounds and the buildings and also take a peek behind the scenes if they wish to. The crematorium’s green credentials are important to the Council and in addition to the large number of trees and shrubs that have been planted on the site it is in the process of installing bat and bird nesting boxes to further encourage wildlife on the site.

Its rural setting and sensitive design combine to provide a comforting environment for the bereaved Pesticide usage is to be kept to an absolute minimum and will only be employed if invasive species such as Giant Hogweed should be found.
