odour which dogs can be trained to identify. Today, the charity is involved in high level training of both Bio-Detection Dogs and Medical Alert Assistance Dogs. The Bio-Detection Dogs work in NHS ethically approved studies to detect various cancers by odour including urological, prostate and colorectal cancer. There have also been encouraging results using dogs to identify malariainfected individuals, while another exciting development includes their ability to detect conditions such as Parkinson’s Disease long before any symptoms emerge. The most recent research has centred on the identification of bacterial infections. With antibiotic resistance a growing problem, canine detection can help to detect specific bacteria as well as discriminate between bacterial and viral infections. Equally impressive are the Medical Alert Assistance Dogs trained to identify minute odour changes emitted prior to a medical emergency. The dogs alert their owners to any potential danger PICTURE: GARY NUNN

laire Guest co-founded Medical Detection Dogs in 2008 and this charity is at the forefront of pioneering research. As a psychologist specialising in animal behaviour, Claire always had a hunch that dogs could be trained to sniff out and identify minute odour changes created by disease. As every dog has the talent to sniff out one tiny teaspoon of sugar in two Olympic-size swimming pools, she was convinced this extraordinary ability could be used to help save human lives. As a result, Claire was responsible for the world’s first study of canine detection of bladder cancer by odour, published in the British Medical Journal in September 2004. When Claire’s own dog, Daisy started behaving strangely with her obsessively nudging her side, she consulted a doctor and tests revealed she had a very deep-seated breast cancer. Owing to the location of the cancer and Claire’s young age, the doctor felt that without Daisy’s help, the cancer would not have been found for several years. This experience confirmed Claire’s belief that all disease and conditions have a specific

I was getting more and more depressed, my wife was constantly worried about me and not knowing when I might go hypo(glycaemic) meant I didn’t have the confidence to leave the house in case I collapsed,” Jon confides. It was Jon’s wife who first heard about Medical Detection Dogs and the couple decided to start the application process. After visits to the charity’s training centre in Milton Keynes Jon was found to be an ideal candidate for a Medical Alert Assistance Dog and he was eventually introduced to 15-month old Labrador, Ralph. Ralph had been socialised by one of the charity’s puppy foster families but was not yet trained and work Medical Detection immediately began on teaching Ralph to identify Jon’s Dog Bea and her odour and any small change in his smell. As a small charity dog, Ralph with no government funding, Medical Detection Dogs relies on donations and volunteers. If you would like to get involved to help sustain their valuable research and training you can make a donation, organise a fundraising event or sponsor a puppy from just £5 a month. Organisations Ralph is more accurate at and groups can also request a speaker helping to monitor my blood who will come and sugar than the testing meter entertain you with videos and anecdotes (and often a dog) or you may even wish to become a volunteer speaker for the charity yourself. Even simply following and sharing social media posts can help to spread the word about the charity’s remarkable work. A final word from Kate Humble, one of the ambassadors of the charity, “The work of Medical Detection Dogs is both pioneering and game-changing. From training dogs to be life savers supporting those with life threatening illness, to researching the capability of dogs to pick up on very early signs of human conditions like cancer and Parkinson’s, the impact this charity and its dogs are having on human health is enormous. Medical Detection Dogs has proved, with scientific rigour, that dogs really are a human’s best friend.” l www.medicaldetectiondogs.org.uk

A PERFECT

MATCH

ennon and McCartney. Bacon and eggs. Torvill and Dean. Fish and chips. Morecambe and Wise. Strawberries and cream – all of them pretty good individually, but even better when working as a pair. And the same applies to wine and cheese – but not just any old combination, selected at random. The coming together of the right wine with the right cheese can be a marriage made in heaven. The successful pairing of food and wine is a developing art form – especially when it comes to the cheese course. While it has always been important to get this delicate process right, these days there is so much to choose from and so many different producers and variants, the task of achieving a perfect match calls for ever greater sophistication. The balance of flavour intensity is crucial in successfully pairing food and wine. For example, foods with high acidity like tomato or lemon-based dishes make wine taste fruitier and less bitter, while the opposite is the case with spicy food. Salt is a wine-friendly flavour that makes even the biggest and heaviest wines feel smoother, richer, less bitter and acidic. Sweet food needs the company of a sweet wine. Finding a successful partnership is particularly important in the case

This is the ideal time of year to really get stuck into the festive cheese boards, paired with just the right wine of course. Peter d’Aguilar gives us a quick lesson of cheese, as many have strong and complex flavours. In order to maximise the gastronomic experience, it is essential to choose a wine that will enhance rather than overwhelm or compromise the cheese’s characteristics. Regardless of whether the wine is light, heavy, sweet or dry, you can

The coming together of the right wine with the right cheese can be a marriage made in heaven

rest assured that there is a cheese out there somewhere that will match it to perfection. People have been consuming wine and cheese together since the dawn of time – or at least the earliest days of civilisation. Because the two complement each other so well, it may be tempting to believe that any old combination will do. However, some careful research and planning is needed to achieve the perfect fit. Why is it that certain wines work so well together with particular cheeses? As soon as the cheeseboard starts to circulate, many people automatically reach for the bottle of red but this is not always the best pairing. Bold, heavy, red wines are great with aged cheese like a mature cheddar. On the other hand, white wine can provide an ideal accompaniment to soft creamy cheeses. As white wines are lower in tannins, they complement gentler flavours without overpowering them. White wine, especially the sweeter versions, are particularly well suited to blue cheeses, as its lighter notes enhance the saltiness of the cheese without

detracting from its full-bodied flavour. Let’s look at some specific examples. For instance, in the case of cheddar, much depends on the strength of the cheese. A full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon or Malbec with their bold flavours will hold up well against a sharp and mature cheddar. Conversely, a mild creamy cheddar will taste better when accompanied by a more delicate wine such as a Chardonnay. An oaked Chardonnay’s citrus and stone fruit flavours with hints of nuts also pair well with Gruyère. Soft cheeses with tangy rinds

Brie’s rich, sensuous flavour combines beautifully with the crisp effervescence of Champagne. Whether served hot or cold, Camembert’s powerful flavour and creamy texture goes especially well with a crisp white or a clean sparkling wine such as Cava. Port is arguably the wine most closely associated with cheese

Wensleydale call for a bold partner to complement their intense flavour. Fuller-bodied wines rich in tannins such as Cabernet Sauvignon or Syrah would make good partners. No pasta dish is complete without a generous sprinkling of parmesan, a quintessentially Italian cheese with a long and distinguished history stretching back to the Roman Empire. Whether served as a garnish or on its own, parmesan works well with a light white such as Pinot Grigio. Alternatively, the high acidity of a Prosecco will cut through the saltiness of this hard cheese. A classic Spanish cheese calls for

a classic Spanish wine Manchego and Rioja! Sweet, creamy ricotta combines to perfection with a tangy German Riesling. The richness of a cheese fondue matched with an exotic Sauternes dessert wine is the perfect way to end a day on the ski slopes – or anywhere else for that matter. And then, of course, there’s Port. While Port is arguably the wine most closely associated with cheeses

of all types, its sweetness and thick body goes particularly well with a pungent, crumbly blue cheese such as Stilton – the classic Christmas combination. A Beaujolais and Greek Feta. Viognier and Jarlsberg. Monterey Jack and Merlot. Mozzarella and Pinot Grigio, goat’s cheese and Sauvignon Blanc. The possibilities are almost limitless, and we all have different taste buds and sensitivities to flavours. If in doubt, a simple, unoaked wine with a little residual sugar will go with just about anything. One thing is for sure – you can have a lot of fun trying out these combinations and with so many vineyards and cheese makers in Sussex creating fabulous wines and incredible cheeses why not discover some local ones of your own? l

CHRISTMAS

Christmas Magic RETURNS TO SEAFORD ❄

The countdown to Christmas has begun; Seaford Town Council, and the Christmas Magic Committee have been working hard preparing for this year’s event, writes Sharan Brydon of Seaford Town Council

A

fter the success of last year’s Seaford Christmas Magic, the organisers are keen to make this year’s extravaganza even bigger and better. This year’s spectacle is being held on Saturday 7th December from 10am - 5pm in Seaford town centre. It will combine the evocative sounds and smells of Christmas with entertainment and attractions for the residents of Seaford and beyond to enjoy. Live music will be ringing out from the main stage at the top of Broad Street throughout the day. Entertainers such as Jamie Morgan with Virginia Thorn, Rebecca Clay with Colin Hughes, Seaford Choral Society, Pop Up Singers, Megan Rose Mulpeter, SPRuNG, Concentus, Vocal Repertoire, Kings Church, Archway and more will be keeping the joyful Christmas spirit upbeat with a whole range of singing styles. Shannon Smith will host an exciting and eclectic mix of vocalists, musicians and other contemporary performances on the performance stage, just off Broad Street. The dramatic Stix Drummers will be very hard to miss as they perform around the town centre.

For families with young children, Santa’s Grotto will be found at Seaford Barn Theatre. Follow the trail through the craft market stalls as helpful elves direct visitors to a magical Christmas grotto experience where children’s eyes will light up in anticipation of meeting the great man himself. Lantern making is also hugely popular with young children. Coloured tissue papers, custom designed and cut stamps will be available in abundant supply at St Leonard’s Church Hall from 10am - 3:45pm. Even if it’s not

Children can take their lantern creations home with them possible to join in the parade at the end of the day, do pop along and make a lantern for free. The lantern parade is a highlight of the day, both for the children taking part and the onlookers. It begins the build-up to the switching on of Seaford’s Christmas lights by Father Christmas. Children can take their lantern creations home with them as the LED lighting makes them fun and safe to enjoy throughout the festive

period. The Christmas lights will be switched on at 5:00pm To top off an exciting day, sit back and relax at the Barn Theatre where Seaford Community Cinema will be showing Mary Poppins Returns, a U-rated film for all the family to enjoy. Booking is advised. Tickets are available online at www.seafordcinema.org and from the Tourist Information Centre at 37 Church Street. Free parking will be available in car parks on West Street, Richmond Road, East Street and Saxon Lane during the event. l More information: www.seafordxmasmagic.uk www.facebook.com/seafordchristmasmagic

CHRISTMAS

Sweet singing in the choir Sara Whatley, soprano, is looking forward to the festive run up to Christmas in her choir, and urges you to do the same

A

t some point in our lives we have all had a go at singing. It might have been at school, in the shower or round the campfire. It’s part of our history as humans, part of the oral telling of tales that entertained and passed on knowledge for many millennia. And happily, group singing is again becoming popular. I love singing. Take a deep breath, fill your belly, relax your shoulders and open your mouth… If you want to get technical there is a bit more to it than that, but it really can be that simple. The benefits of singing are numerous and quite astonishing: from the physical engaging in aerobic exercise and oxygenating your body, to the social; thinking; learning; relaxing; confidence building and even the neurological. Neural pathways are built between the right and left hemispheres of our brains as we sing, that is between the right feeling, imaginative, creative, musical, intuition, visualisation side and the left maths, facts, logic, linear thinking, sequencing, and analysing side. These connections are hugely beneficial to our overall thinking and being, attention and cognition, and connects us with our human qualities of emotion, creativity and love.

Endorphins are also released when singing, coming from the right side of the brain, making us happier, healthier and smarter. Many people love singing – some

in the car, some to their children, some on a stage in the spotlight and some with a group of like-minded people. All are great, but there is something particularly enjoyable about singing with others, especially at Christmas. I know, I know, it’s all still an age away, but in choir terms, it’s actually just around the corner and you better get practicing! I have sung in my local village choir for a while now – and in many other choirs before this one – and can contest there is always something very special about the run up to the festivities. Learning new arrangements to age old favourite carols and hymns is lovely, as are the silly hats, mince pies and glass of something mulled when it comes to the Christmas concert. I would urge anyone who fancies singing to have a look around and join your local group. There are so many places to sing in Sussex, so many brilliant choirs and small groups – even a few friends round a piano is a fun thing to do! Grab some bells and a triangle and ding dong, you’re away! l

PUZZLE PAGE SUDOKU

A simple process of logic is all that it takes to solve each puzzle in this game. Put the numbers 1 to 9 in each vertical column and each horizontal line. Each number must appear only once in each column and line and in each of the 3x3 boxes in the grid.

1. Jutted out (9) 6. Weep (3) 8. Loving (7) 9. Ruck (5) 10. Hotpot (4) 11. Cushion (3) 13. In addition (4) 14. Canoe (5) 16. Demeanour (6) 18. Thin paper (6) 19. Avarice (5) 21. Peak (4) 22. Affirmative (3) 23. Egg-shaped (4) 27. Deduce (5) 28. Come into (7) 30. Long, thin fish (3) 31. Doctor (9)

Each number in the grid represents a different letter of the alphabet. You have three letters in the control grid to start you off. Enter them in the appropriate squares in the main grid, then use your knowledge of words to work out which letters should go in the missing squares. As you get the letters, fill in other squares with the same number in the main grid and control grid. Check off the alphabetical list of letters as you identify them.

SOMETHING NEW Philippa and Neil Ejje had always dreamed of what life might be like in the historical Moathouse overlooking the lake, but would never have guessed that they might one day be its proud owners

AT HOME WITH… THE OWNERS: Philippa and Neil Ejje, live here with their three children Thomas, 7, Max, 5 and Harry, 2. They moved to this area because it was commutable from London, yet felt rural. It was a part of the countryside that Philippa had known well as a child, having grown up in the neighbouring village. Philippa’s father and mother still live nearby. THE HOUSE: Late 15th century hall house with 20th century extension attaching it to its converted 19th century barn. ROOMS: Entrance hall, kitchen, dining room, living/playroom, sitting room, drawing room, office, 7 bedrooms, three bathrooms. WHAT WE LOVE MOST ABOUT LIVING HERE: “We love how self-sufficient we feel here. When we lived in London we spent all of our free time dashing about looking for entertainment, but here we just want to stay at home.” WHAT MAKES THE HOUSE A HOME: “We love the fact that we have a very cosy intimate home when we are here as a family, all tucked into the older part of the house. It is full of character and period features which we have always loved in older properties.”

W

W hen the estate agent drove Philippa Ejje down the winding country lane leading to the Moat House, she fell in love. For there in an exquisite position, sunnily overlooking a duck-filled lake was the perfect 15th century brick and stone farmhouse. Sadly however, the house wasn’t for sale. Its neighbour was; an equally well situated, if not quite so historical converted barn, which would once have made up part of the Moat House’s farmyard. The stunning location of the barn, its large garden and fields on the doorstep, its spacious interior (especially

when compared to their previous London flat) and its proximity to a mainline station for Neil to make the daily London commute all contributed to the Ejje’s decision to set up their family home here. Their two year old son Thomas was fast outgrowing the confined space of their London home, and with baby Max on the way time was running out. “Although we’d always really wanted to live in a period property the barn did have some history and would make a fantastic family home,” says Philippa. For four busy years the Ejje family thrived in their converted barn. Interiors expert Philippa renovated and decorated the house to perfection. As if this didn’t keep her busy enough, she also found time to fit in another baby, Harry. “Life was happy and very busy in the barn,” remembers Philippa, “but I did feel the odd twinge of envy for the beautiful house next door.”

MASTER BEDROOM

Philippa fell in love with the French shutters (now behind her bed) but they never fitted the windows in any of her bedrooms, and so she decided to use them instead as a bedhead

And so, when their neighbours slipped them the wink that they were about to put the Moat House on the market, they were thrown into a quandary. They had set up a home for life in the barn, but knew that the opportunity to buy the Moat House, which had really been their dream for all these years, would most likely never arise again. The temptation proved too great for them, and they had an offer accepted within days.

Moving twenty yards along the lane seemed like a breeze to Neil and Philippa, who, to somehow assuage slight guilt at moving again, decided to move all of their furniture without the help of removals vans. “Our first whopping mistake,” tells Philippa ruefully. “It was a nightmare! 20 yards felt like miles as we puffed and panted to and fro, heaving sofas and tables from one house to the other.” When at last they, and all their worldly possessions were in place, however, they knew they had done the right thing. The furniture that Philippa had collected over the years and brought back to life fitted perfectly into its new surroundings. The main house dates back to the 1400s, and in the 1980s the previous owners had built an extension to join the house to its 19th century barn, across the original farmyard opposite. Philippa’s beloved antiques and classic furnishings fitted in well. The house itself is a

its own – a wide light-filled sitting room whose doors fling open onto the extensive lawns is the perfect entertaining space, with three further bedrooms upstairs for guests. Further on still is the fabulous barn conversion whose ceiling soars high up into the rafters. The space is cleverly laid out into a huge downstairs room with stairs to a mezzanine level. It provides a versatile space – part office, part show room, part workspace for Philippa’s burgeoning furniture restoration business and it promises years of future fun for the boys, within reach, but out of immediate earshot, of the main house… “It’s the home we always dreamt of,” says Philippa, “and living in a period property has fulfilled all of our hopes. Ironically enough, having spent our first years of family life in a converted barn, we experienced the benefits of that particular style of living and are fortunate to have kept a barn element in our new home: the contrast between the old house’s cosy character and the barn’s height and space hits the perfect balance. We feel we found the best of both worlds.” l

CHRISTMAS

Green

As the festive season draws nearer, Sara Whatley starts to think about the all-important Christmas wreath

E

very December I like to mark the beginning of the festive season by making a wreath for our front door. I go foraging in the forest for greenery, pinecones and berry-laden holly, then lug it all home and get the kettle on. I find it easier to make the wreath on the garden table, with hot beverage by my side of course, to save the mess in the house. To keep my wreath as easy as possible, I simply take the branches of greenery and bind them together with green cotton, gradually building up height and breadth to create a sturdy wreath. I then snip smaller pieces of holly and any

&berry

other interesting greenery I have found, poke them into the wreath, nestle in pinecones and do a final round with the cotton to secure everything. You could use a festive ribbon for this final round if you wish. Finally, I tie on red ribbon to hang it from the door. As is tradition, I also love to bring the greenery inside and tuck little sprays behind picture frames, across the mantelpiece and anywhere I can! If I can incorporate lights, oranges and natural festive decorations in amongst the greenery, all the better. Trends for this Christmas are natural, nature inspired looks – think greens, browns, golds and reds in rustic materials. Blue is another big look, which will look bold set against a natural backdrop. Lights of course are big news, but on I simply take the branches the warm, golden side of things of greenery and bind them rather than bright white. Happy together with green cotton decorating! l

n February 1919, the war poet Robert Graves was laid up in a Hove villa with a dangerous bout of Spanish flu. The pandemic was at its height and there were no working nurses to be found. Graves had to settle for two that were already retired. “One,” he said, “was competent but frequently drunk, the other sober but incompetent.” Robert Graves Despite the hit-andmiss nursing care, Graves eventually recovered from the southwards to London. Few Sussex towns remained unaffected. But Influenza ward at the U S Army Camp where did the Spanish Flu Hospital, France come from, and how did it spread through Sussex? THE ‘NAPLES SOLDIER’ The origins of the Spanish Flu are uncertain. China, Kansas and Etaples in northern France have all been suggested as the epicentre – but the timing of the disease was no coincidence. Its spread was enabled by the global movements of soldiers and labourers towards the end of the First World War. First identified in Glasgow in May 1918, it quickly travelled

Spanish Flu killed an estimated 50 million people worldwide – more than double the death toll of WW1

The first wave was relatively mild. Twenty fatalities had occurred across Brighton and Hove by the end of August and the media gave little coverage to the disease. The Sussex Daily News called it an “ingenious attempt” to sabotage the upcoming general election. In Brighton, Hanningtons department store published an advert suggesting a visit to their sale as a cure: “To those not familiar with the House of Hannington, of North and East Street, Brighton, we would suggest an early visit, before the influenza germ develops, and bargains decline,” read the piece in the Brighton Gazette. THE DEATH TOLL MOUNTS Within three months of this advert’s publication, a second and far more deadly wave of ‘flu had gripped Sussex. October and November saw fatalities rise steeply across the area, with Brighton and Hove the worst affected. At its peak, the Spanish Flu was claiming 80 lives per week in Brighton alone. Symptoms were gruesome.

By the end of January, over 600 lives had been lost across East Sussex. The death toll was far worse in areas with high population concentrations. Brighton’s most densely populated wards – St John’s, Hanover and St Peter’s – had higher death rates than anywhere else.

Sufferers could experience bluetinged skin from lack of oxygen, vomiting, infectious nosebleeds and haemorrhages that filled the lungs with blood. Healthy young adults were affected as much as the very young and the very old. Local newspapers began to issue advice on how to avoid catching the ‘flu. The Bexhillon-Sea Observer recommended wearing an extra coat, sitting

In October 1918, the Sussex Express published an article about Spanish Flu’s devastating effect on Uckfield. “The epidemic of influenza at Uckfield is not diminishing,” it read. “Business is much hampered. While not as deadly as the earlier outbreak, it still accounted for 157 fatalities in East Sussex. In under a year, this virulent disease had filled graveyards, depleted local populations and ripped apart the few families still intact following the war. In total, the Spanish Flu killed an estimated 50 million people worldwide – more than double the death toll of WW1. There are no memorials to them, but their deaths shaped the political and scientific landscapes for years to come. l

REMEMBRANCE

My freedom In our Centenarians special in June we were spellbound by Herta Stanton’s amazing story, so we reunited her with Robert Veitch, to learn more about her Kindertransport journey as the 80th anniversary approaches

W

hen Mr Kern, my ‘A’ level history teacher taught The Third Reich it didn’t seem possible I would ever meet someone who lived through it, and yet I have. At 102½ years, Herta Stanton has a clear and lucid memory, detailing a warning from history. “I was born in 1917, in Vienna, into a Jewish family. After Hitler’s rise to power in 1932 in Germany, the Nazi influence seeped across the border and Vienna changed. Some started to wear a Swastika, but didn’t realise what it entailed, that it might have been dangerous for Austria.

60 SUSSEX LIVING | November 2019

‘Juden Verboten’ [ Jews forbidden] signs appeared outside some shops. But I was young and didn’t take much notice of them,” she said with a nonchalant defiance. After the Anschluss with Germany (12th March 1938) and Kristallnacht

German army on patrol

Nazi brown shirts would break up the queue (9-10th November 1938) life got tougher. Obtaining basic food and groceries proved problematic while armed Nazis patrolled Vienna. “They were welcomed,” Herta noted with a sense of incredulity. “To wear a Swastika as a disguise? If they found out you were Jewish, it would be... the finish of you.” “The Gestapo could knock at our door at any time; day or night. They took our Bösendorfer upright piano and our and ta Her jewellery. They took husband whatever they wanted. Chessi Eventually, they came

to take us to a camp, but my mother pleaded, saying I was too ill. Our neighbour, the doctor, confirmed it, ‘this girl is very ill, she will die if she is moved.’ The Gestapo let us stay. My mother was advised to take me away as soon as I was able to move because they would return, then take us to a camp.” In Britain, the government encouraged Kindertransport; a planned rescue of Jewish children from Germany, Austria, Czechoslovakia and Poland, prior to WWII. To speed things up, British Home Secretary Sir Samuel Hoare issued travel documents for lists, rather than individuals. After an appeal for foster homes on the BBC Home Service, 500 volunteered.

Herta was offered a chance to escape on the first Kindertransport, but she needed a visa. “It meant queueing outside the British Embassy. Nazi brown shirts would break up the queue by kicking people, their boots armed with razor blades embedded in the soles. It took four or five days but I was granted my visa, and told about the train.” Herta left home on December 10th 1938 for the midnight train from Westbahnhof station. She paused to reveal a coruscating, haunting, insight, “For several years all I had was the memory of leaving home for the station. The image of my parents, sat at the table, their heads in their hands, crying uncontrollably. They were certain we would never meet again. I thought it was goodbye forever too.” Each child was allowed one suitcase. Toys, money, jewellery and accompanying adults were banned, “I wore a straw hat with a velvet ribbon. I had to chaperone a four-year old boy that I met at the station.” The steam engine released its brakes and slipped away, carrying 500 fortunate young souls. It was almost 18 hours to Rotterdam and there was nothing to eat or drink on board. “At the Dutch border, Nazis stopped the train, taking anything of value. I saw

Herta with Prince Charles at Clarence House

Britain gave me a home, when Austria didn’t them coming and threw my little Agfa camera across the border into Holland so they could not have it. Arriving in Rotterdam, the Dutch clapped us off the train. They fed us oranges, apples and chocolate,” Herta remembered gleefully. “The little boy cried on the ferry to Harwich, it was awful, but I had to look after him. Once docked in Harwich,

we were all medically examined. I was separated from the boy, I never saw him again.” From Harwich, Herta travelled to Liverpool Street station, and onto Crawley where her foster family lived. “Do I feel British or Austrian? It’s very difficult to take sides but Britain gave me a home, when Austria didn’t. When I laid the Remembrance Sunday wreath at a service in Beckenham I got a round of applause. It brought back so many memories. That moment meant so much.” Remarkably, Herta’s parents and three siblings all survived the Nazis. Their family was reunited after a small ad was placed in the Daily Telegraph. Around 10,000 children came to the UK thanks to Kindertransport, but two-thirds never saw their family again, making Herta’s story all the more astounding. “I was invited to the 60th Anniversary celebration of Kindertransport at Clarence House and met Prince Charles and Camilla.” Commemorative memorials have been installed at Westbahnhof and Liverpool Street stations. Herta is one of the very last surviving Kindertransport children. As Mr Kern would have said, “Ich bin Freiheit…” I am freedom. l

ADVERTISING FEATURE

UPWARDLY MOBILE WITH Clearwell Mobility W ith exceptional levels of customer care, a comprehensive range of mobility products to enable independent living and superb aftersales support, Clearwell Mobility continue to build on their success with the opening of an impressive new showroom in Eastbourne. A family-run business founded by husband and wife team, Duncan and Natasha Gillett in 2004, Clearwell Mobility has grown from one small shop in Woodingdean, Brighton to encompass a network of 12 showrooms across Sussex, Surrey, Kent and Middlesex. Driven by a focus on customer care and the desire to improve quality of life, Clearwell is now the

leading supplier of mobility products and services in the South East. “All of our products and services are designed to help people retain their independence, allowing them to remain living in their own home for as long as possible and giving them the ability to get out and about in the community without having to rely on someone else to help,” explains Duncan. The company’s ethos of care is valued by the entire staff and all managers are trained to Trusted Assessor standard so customers can be assured of receiving the best possible guidance when purchasing mobility products or living aids. “We’re not just here to sell products, we also want our customers to get the best possible use from them,” Duncan tells me. “The 62 SUSSEX LIVING | November 2019

Clearwell Mobility has become the leading retailer of mobility equipment across the South East, as Lisa De Silva recently discovered when she visited the new flagship Eastbourne store wealth of experience and knowledge of our wonderful staff is invaluable in advising and helping people to make the right choices for their specific circumstances.” While the company has an online presence, nothing beats a visit to one of Clearwell’s showrooms, where there is a wide range of products on display and a ‘try before you buy’ policy. Customers can trial products that include riser recliners, wheelchairs, beds and mobility scooters for size and comfort, as well as having walking frames fitted and an introduction on how to use them. With plenty of free parking, an

expansive floor space, as well as disabled access and facilities, the new Eastbourne showroom is particularly well-placed to display and demonstrate a wide range of mobility products, including a stairlift, various ramping solutions, a choice of 14 different riser recliners, a range of beds, mobility scooters and wheelchairs. As the UK’s biggest retailer of Cosyfeet footwear, the new Eastbourne store also has the space to stock an extensive choice of styles, sizes and colourways of these popular and comfortable shoes, boots and slippers. There’s even a café area to revive tired shoppers. “Every six months we have a management meeting so we can keep on top of customer feedback and discuss new ideas,” says Duncan. “As choosing new furniture and mobility products can take time and be tiring, we’ve designed a small café area in the Eastbourne showroom for people to sit down with a cup of tea and think over their purchases.”

cross-product trade-ins is also available on a wide range of other items. Clearwell can also take back products to resell on behalf of families, to help minimise distress during bereavement. The quality of their offering and the ethos of customer care means that Clearwell has been chosen as a retailer by some of the best mobility brands available, including Stannah Stairlifts. This professionalism also qualifies the company to be a service partner in the Government’s Motability Scheme, which provides vehicles including scooters and powered wheelchairs to the disabled. With a fleet of over 400 scooters, the company is one of the largest Motability dealers in the South East.

will be donated to the Gardening for the Disabled Trust. For Duncan, Clearwell’s success is based on people power. “We’ve got a great team and a great staff and we’re all committed to helping customers get the most from the products so they benefit from greater independence and an enhanced home and social life.”

Clearwell has been chosen as a retailer by some of the best mobility brands available For those unable to make a store visit, Clearwell offer free home assessments for large items of equipment to ensure they are suitable for both the customer and their living space. What’s more, Clearwell also offer home adaptations including the installation of stairlifts, bathroom remodelling and ramp fitting. “We can adapt a house so people can stay living in their homes for as long as possible and along with installing equipment, we also service and repair it too. It’s great for customers because they only have to deal with one company.” Aftercare support providing customers with peace of mind is another service important to Clearwell, particularly with the purchase of mobility scooters and stairlifts. Extended warranties and service contracts are available, along with specialist insurance products for scooters. The company even has a Scooter Owners Club offering cheaper servicing, low cost parts, free loan equipment and a guaranteed exchange scheme for those wishing to trade-up or cross-trade from one product to another, such as from a scooter to a powered wheelchair. This policy of

Keeping in line with the company’s ambition to help people maintain their independence and mobility, Clearwell are proud sponsors of the Brighton and Hove Albion Walking Football Team. “I love the idea of giving these older guys a means to socialise, so they can continue to enjoy their passion for football and get some exercise,” laughs Duncan. Being involved in the community is important to the company - all showrooms support a local charity and this year any money collected from the sale of plastic bags

BLOOMING TIMES

Looking for a seriously useful gardening gift? Bewildered by the choices on offer? Flo Whitaker sorts the wheat from the chaff and picks six of her favourite things for the green fingered

What gardeners really want for Christmas

I

n the gadget-obsessed world of horticulture, it pays to remember that a few carefully chosen tools are all you need. A well-made carbon steel spade is a sound investment and will be strong enough to last a lifetime. Look for one that’s constructed from a single piece of metal and has a choice of handle length – a short handled spade used by a tall gardener is a recipe for backache. Some spades have a foot rest plate which cushions the sole of the user’s foot; particularly useful on heavy/compacted soil. For hand tools, single piece construction is also desirable as welded or bolted joints can break under stress. Wide trowels are ideal for general work, whereas long, pointy ones are perfect for bulb planting. Think about the recipient’s style of gardening and purchase a tool to suit. Some companies offer a customising service and will engrave a message on a trowel, making a uniquely personal gift. For budding youngsters, a scaled-down ‘junior set’ comprising hand fork, trowel and rake combines cuteness with functionality. Even the smallest garden should have several watering cans dotted about, ensuring there’s always one conveniently

64 SUSSEX LIVING | November 2019

to hand. Cans with long-reach spouts are useful if there are lots of pots to water and gardeners who like the retro look will love a vintage galvanised can. If you feel like blowing the budget, fill a can with little wrapped gifts; string, plant labels, lip balm, etc. An electrically heated propagator brings a new world of horticultural possibilities – the growing season can be extended and seeds that would otherwise be difficult to germinate can be considered. Propagators come in many styles (and prices!). Choose one fitted with a thermostat

Gardeners who like the retro-look will love a vintage galvanised watering can to give a greater level of temperature control. The fanciest types are multicompartmented, allowing for a range of different temperatures to be set.

Long, narrow propagators are great for raising seeds and small cuttings on indoor windowsills. In a chilly greenhouse, a large, high-sided propagator is a cost-effective way to overwinter tender plants as you only need to heat the propagator interior, not the entire greenhouse. Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without socks. Gardeners want soft, knee-length socks made from natural wool, cotton or bamboo fibres. What we don’t want is novelty nylon musical socks that will make our feet sweaty and cold. Thank you. Good secateurs are essential. It may sound daft, but take a moment to recall the size of the recipient’s hands. Chunky secateurs look impressively macho but if they don’t sit comfortably in the hands, they will, literally, be a pain to use. Left-handed secateurs are hard to find but garden centres often stock them in the run-up to Christmas. Left-handed/ ambidextrous gardeners, (like me!) will be delighted with such a gift. Not that I’m hinting, or anything… l

LEWES WALK

This month our top wanderer, Robert Veitch, takes a train from Lewes to Southease before walking the high road back to Lewes acoss the South Downs

T

o enjoy all the benefits of this route and magnificent landscape, walk it on a clear day when the scenery disappears into infinity. Alighting at Southease Station, take the track behind platform two and follow it around the bends towards the River Ouse and Southease swing bridge. Cross the swing bridge, before taking the gate on the right. Take the path atop the levee and follow the Ouse upstream.

The smooth dome of Mount Caburn will be in the distance. After about half a mile there’s a gate, then half a mile later, there’s another. Turn left, away from the river, down the slope and along the track. The track leads through a gateway and under telephone cables towards Rodmell – reversing the final journey of the village’s most widely known resident, Virginia Woolf. Beyond a metal gate, the track

evolves into tarmac, which leads through Rodmell. The flint walled buildings give the place a nostalgic serenity and elegance in dappled sunlight. Once at the main road, cross with care to Mill Lane opposite. Walk to the left of the barn with the electric blue paintwork. It’s half a mile to the end of the road, but

Even with a small gain in height there’s still a wow factor civilisation finishes before then. Be sure to turn around on the ascent of Mill Hill to inhale the views. Even with a small gain in height there’s still a wow factor. At the top of Mill Hill, turn right onto the South Downs Way, walking between the feathered edge fencing panels. majesty of the Downs opens up. Wander down into the col, then once through the pair of metal gates, continue up to a wooden gate. Beyond this is a concrete track, which seems a little other-worldy in this landscape. Follow the concrete over Front Hill and then Iford Hill. After a mile the concrete turns sharp left, but our route turns sharp right. After 50m and once through a gate, it turns left and leads to the summit of Swanborough Hill, which at 180m (591 feet) is the high point of the day. The surface underfoot is packed hardcore, which somehow feels more natural than the concrete. The path veers left around a bend and a first view of Kingston appears. Continue to the wooden gate, then 75m beyond it on Kingston Hill, take the path to the right by the fingerpost. It passes a burial mound before the descent begins. The track of chalk and flint drops away steeply, losing 100m of altitude over the next 800m of distance as it snakes downhill to a metal gate. By the time the tarmac of Kingston Ridge appears, the outlying homes of suburbia border the route. The road dips down to the junction with Ashcombe Hollow. Cross with care onto the historic Juggs Road. This was once a route to Brighton, and Juggs was a term for Brighton fisherman, whose wives would transport their husbands’ catch across the Downs in baskets or earthenware jugs, loaded onto donkeys. Past the replica of Ashcombe Mill, built around 90 years after the original was destroyed by high winds in 1916, lies the last of the open downland; a final chance to enjoy the expansive panorama on this walk. Beyond a redundant gate, the path follows the field boundary, beneath the trees, gradually widening, eventually giving way to tarmac once again. It’s gently downhill, dropping away a little more steeply as the drone of traffic increases in volume. After natural sounds of the walk, traffic noise feels a bit of a shock.

A sharp left precedes the bridge across the A27 and railway. It seems more like crossing a gorge, but once over it, the road turns sharp right and leads downhill past Jubilee Gardens to a t-junction. Turn left, and then right at the mini-roundabout onto Southover High Street. It’s a delightful road, with a seemingly endless variety of buildings along the way. After almost half a mile, turn left at the mini-roundabout and Lewes

Robert has tested the route personally, making sure it is suitable for walking. CHARITY

Hirsute you sir! Hanna Prince discovers how getting hairy could help save lives this autumn

E

ver wondered what you’d look like with a goatee, a handlebar or even a full-on Santa Claus beard? Now’s the time to find out. Letting your mo’ grow in the run-up to Christmas isn’t just a style statement – it’s also the easiest way to raise money for charity. BONFIRE BEARDS There’s nothing new in the concept of cultivating facial hair for a good cause, but it was the Movember movement that first widely publicised the idea. Founded by two friends in a Melbourne bar, Movember quickly spread across the world. The campaign has raised over £440 million for research into men’s health over little more than a decade, transforming cancer survival rates in the process, encouraging men to open up about their mental health and even bringing the long-derided ‘tache back into fashion. By 2030, Movember aims to reduce the number of men dying prematurely by 25%. Barcombe resident Mark Engineer is among those who have taken up the challenge. So, why Movember? “Well, basically I’m pretty lazy,” he admits. “Some folk run marathons or sit in baths full of baked beans to raise money for charity. That all seemed like a bit too much effort. Movember is a way to support a good cause by doing very little. “It was fun. You find yourself really getting into it, trying out various styles – the Victorian villain, the plain clothes

cop, the Salvador Dali. I was sorry to lose it when December came. I might have kept it, if my wife hadn’t put her foot down!”

Movember is a way to support a good cause by doing very little. I might have kept it, if my wife hadn’t put her foot down!

WARM AND FUZZY Movember isn’t the only movement encouraging men to cultivate their facial hair for charity. If you prefer the idea of distinguished whiskers to a furry upper lip, Bowel Cancer UK runs ‘Decembeard’ in the run-up to Christmas. “Bowel cancer is the third most common cancer in men, with 1 in 15 diagnosed with the disease every year,” explains Luke Squires, Director of Fundraising at Bowel Cancer UK. “Decembeard is a fantastic opportunity to raise awareness of bowel cancer in men. Since we launched the campaign in 2011, we’ve had thousands of people take part in raising an incredible £1.4 million to help fund our vital services and lifesaving research.” Taking part, he says, couldn’t be easier. “Sign up, ditch your razor and get sponsored to grow a beard throughout the month of December. Already bearded? No problem. Dye, ditch or decorate your beard and join the campaign.” Women can get involved in the no-shave movement this autumn, too. Movember asks ‘Mo Sisters’ to take part by hosting a Mo-ment gathering for friends and family or making a donation. The most important contribution you can make, though, is to encourage the men in your life to be proactive about their health. l uk.movember.com http://www.bowelcanceruk.org.uk/ decembeard2019 November 2019 | SUSSEX LIVING 69

PETS

It’s a Dog’s Life Teddy knows ‘them indoors’ are frightened of the odd thing here and there, and being a sometimes mischievous little chap he plays on this from time to time… unless spiders are involved! This month’s column is barked through his human mouthpiece, Helen Stockton

I

t is fair to say that we all have certain things we’re frightened of. November, following hard on the heels of that celebration of spookiness, Halloween, brings its own contribution, with mists and dark evenings, that people, with their reliance on their visual sense, find a bit un-nerving. Now I’m not afraid of the dark; what can I tell you I’m a roughty-toughty terrier, but my predecessor, the Boss, taught me how to play dark evenings to advantage. You wait until, ideally, one family member is home alone, and then you unexpectedly bark sharply. If they are watching a tense film on TV then this needs to be timed for the

70 SUSSEX LIVING | November 2019

quiet moment when the suspense is building nicely. It makes them jump a treat. The secret is to follow this up promptly. I’m a master of tilting my head with pricked up ears so that it looks as if I am listening intently. I actually only do it because ‘Them Indoors’ think it’s appealing. However, in this instance, having given the appearance of listening carefully, something certain politicians are good at too but without my cuteness,

I’m not afraid of the dark, I’m a roughty-toughty terrier

I then give a low, rumbling growl, as if I’ve heard something sinister. This usually leads to them gabbling reassurances which have nothing to do with soothing their pooch, but everything to do with quietening their own fears. For maximum effectiveness the whole process needs to be repeated several times so they can’t relax, and a good variation is to do it when outside for a late-night garden visit, accompanied by staring fixedly into the shadows. It gets them rapidly scuttling back inside I can tell you. And talking of scuttling, there’s one fear I share with people; that of spiders. ‘Her Indoors’ doesn’t like big ones and ‘Junior Her’ has a similar reaction to even miniscule arachnids. The Boss used to help by eating them, although for some reason, ‘Junior Her’ thought spider’s legs poking out from between his teeth unattractive. When I arrived, they assumed I would help with spider catching duties, but there’s no way. I just hide in my bed or add to the general sense of drama by barking. Anyway, a friend thought it would be fun to buy me a toy spider as a joke, and it took me about six months before I’d play with it. However, revenge is a dish best served cold and Incy Wincy has subsequently been de-squeaked and de-stuffed which is no less than he deserves! Whilst I’m not keen on spiders, one of the Boss’s fears that I don’t share is that of fireworks. He used to hate the bangs and barked at them. Last year, on my first bonfire night with ‘Them Indoors’, they stayed at home in case I needed comforting. However, ‘Her Indoors’ was impressed by my fearlessness and we ended up watching them through the window together. So, considered in the round, I’m really quite a brave dog after all. l

BOOK REVIEW

Elizabeth Kay offers Sussex Living readers her thoughts on recent reads that have caught her attention. She gives her views on a selection of books from different genres which may capture your interest WE WERE THE LUCKY ONES

POSTCARDS FROM A STRANGER by Imogen Clark (Lake Union Publishing)

This is another novel featuring Alzheimer’s, but it has a very different feel from The Little Girl in the Radiator (August issue) which was upbeat and affectionate. This is far darker, and concerns a father who was a bully and has kept many family secrets which are now out of reach to the daughter who

There are a lot of twists and turns in this plot, and a lot of surprises. I found it held my interest far more than expected, and was a bit of a page-turner. However, what both these books have brought home to me is that you need money to look after someone properly, and neither book tackles the problem of what you do when there simply isn’t any. The story has many flashbacks, and two narrators, but they’re never confusing. It becomes clear how the mother’s own upbringing with a domineering father caused her to make exactly the same mistake, and what it cost her. You do want to scream at the narrator from time to time to stop her repeating the female family trait of undervaluing themselves, but stick with it. A worthwhile read. 72 SUSSEX LIVING | November 2019

by Georgia Hunter (Allison & Busby) This book was a book group selection, and so I didn’t look at the blurb, I just started reading. And like many people, I thought I was reading a novel and found it rather far-fetched. I didn’t realise it was a true story until I reached the end. And I should have done, because it mirrors the experiences of my father, who was not Jewish but a Pole. He was deported to Siberia from Lwow – now Lviv – and his family survived too and were also scattered across the globe in the aftermath of the Second World War. My father died in 1981, and I’ve tried to tie together the different parts of his history without success – until now. It’s all there. Digging his own grave at gunpoint, working his way south to join up with General Anders’ army, Samarkand, Palestine, Monte Cassino. This is a tremendously exciting book and for anyone with an incomplete view of the Second World War, it’s essential reading. I read it in, of all places, Lviv, where I was staying for a few days. The only downside is the sheer number of characters, and keeping track of them all. It’s heart-breaking, exhilarating, and informative, all at once. Read it.

MALAMANDER

by Thomas Taylor (IndiBooks) A town called Eerie-on-Sea, the wreck of a ship called the Leviathan, Herbie Lemon, a twelve-year-old in charge of the Lost and Found department at the Grand Nautilus Hotel and the unexpected appearance of Violet Parma, another twelve-year-old in search of her lost parents. It’s a spooky mix, with lots of mist and threatening

It’s a spooky mix, with lots of mist and threatening shapes in the gloom and cold snowy weather shapes in the gloom and cold snowy weather as well as Lady Kraken, who surveys the town through her camera luna (reminds me of a camera obscura) from her penthouse suite at the top of the hotel. The ending gets a bit hectic, but it’s an original read with the occasional dash of dark humour – orphan Herbie was found washed up on the shore in a crate of lemons. The central mystery concerns the legendary monster called the Malamander and its egg, which supposedly grants wishes although, in all the best traditions of fairy tales, they may not turn out the way you wanted. This is well-written, with a gothic feel to it, and there’s loads of excitement and adventure for the 10+ age-group. Something a bit different.

he forerunners of tights have been around for centuries, though the hosiery you have in your drawers at home only emerged less than 100 years ago. In the decadent 1920s when hemlines rose enough to show women’s legs, it became the fashion to wear sheer stockings made of silk. On 15th May 1940 the nylon stocking created a stampede of American women looking to take advantage of this cheaper and more durable garment. Two years later frustrated women were deprived of this luxury as America entered World War II and nylon was requisitioned for making parachutes. These were the days when gravy-browning with eyebrowpencil seams were found on the legs of fashion-conscious women and American soldiers swept British ladies off their feet with their supplies of nylons.

When the miniskirt became a fashion emblem in the 1960s, tights took over from stockings, and the emergence of spandex made them cheap enough for everyone. Since those days, the variety of tights has increased dramatically: not just in colours and patterns but in appearance too. This is where the 74 SUSSEX LIVING | November 2019

question of ‘denier’ comes in, which basically means the thickness of the material used. You can get different deniers: 100 denier is completely opaque and 3 is barely visible when worn. Now that the weather is turning, the question is: have you looked in your tights’ drawer yet? Tights are a must if you want to wear dresses and skirts in cold weather, and this season

In the decadent 1920’s when hemlines rose to show women’s legs, it became the fashion to wear sheer silk stockings opaques have made a comeback! For the past decade they haven’t been considered the ‘thing’ to wear, but now you can feel fashion forward putting your best (covered) leg first. If you want to join in with the fashion-conscious, try pairing black opaque tights with a shorter skirt and knee high boots or socks. But don’t feel compelled to wear just black or sheer tights – boost your outfit by adding some colourful and quirky patterned ones. They can really complete your look, especially when the colour complements your outfit or accessories. For those who want a more individual look there are plenty of small boutiques out there, which stock unique and often bespoke patterns and designs. So look on the bright side of chilly November days; the latest in tightswear will enable you to look good, and keep warm! l

REMEMBRANCE

Pilot Officer John D Crossman

As the Battle of Britain raged above Southern England in 1940, a fatal plane crash left a lasting legacy in the fields of Forest Row, uniting a local boy and Australian pilot in eternity, though they never met. Robert Veitch investigates

WAR & PEACE J

ohn Dallas Crossman was born in 1918 and grew up in New South Wales. Aged twenty, he applied to the RAAF but wasn’t accepted so in 1939 he applied to the RAF, made the grade and endured an eight-week voyage, docking at Southampton on 12th October 1939. He was airborne before the month was out and the Battle of Britain began before he completed training. Crossman commenced active service on September 14th 1940 and in the 16 days that followed he flew 18 sorties. On September 30th 1940, Crossman’s Hurricane engaged several Messerschmitt 109’s, showing ‘stupendous courage’ causing significant damage to one. It would later crash on Ashdown Forest, but not before the stricken German aircraft caused fatal damage to Crossman’s Hurricane, causing his crash at 1:30pm at Tablehurst Farm. Anna Pearce, who runs the memorial Facebook brought the story up to date when I met her on 30th September, the 79th anniversary. Peter Wheeler was two-years old in 1940, a babe in arms in the garden with his brother and mother. When he was a little older he visited the scene and it left a lifelong imprint. Anna recalls, “After 78 SUSSEX LIVING | November 2019

Peter Wheeler

They never met but they’re united by this the crash Pete said it wasn’t widely known that Crossman was Australian, people assumed he was German.” Pete visited the scene on each anniversary. As the boy grew into a man, he would leave a small wooden cross to honour Crossman and place a notice in the local paper. A small boys tribute became an old man’s bequest, ensuring John Crossman’s sacrifice left a lasting legacy in the village. Of the many Battle of Britain crash sites, few are officially marked as names were added to nearby war memorials instead. Pete campaigned for a permanent memorial for years and years, eventually gaining permission to

install it on private land. The unveiling of the memorial took place on the 76th anniversary of the crash. “I went along because I was curious,” remembers Anna. Pete had completed his bucket list but it was just the pair of us in attendance. It was an awful anti-climax and I was deeply upset. We got chatting and I resolved to help raise awareness so I set up the Facebook page. Pete was never really heard, despite his willingness to shout.” Pete was diagnosed with cancer and admitted to East Surrey Hospital in Redhill. Anna recalled, “When I visited, he told me more and more about John Crossman,” as if passing on a living will. Pete passed away in April 2017. “I knew Pete for less than a year but I want to perpetuate his and John Crossman’s legacies, now their lives have ended. They never met, but they’re united by this.” There’s a footpath to the memorial and Anna intends to place themed markers along the route. “I hope to arrange a flypast for the 80th anniversary, but we need more support to make it happen.” l For more information follow the Facebook page: Pilot Officer John D Crossman Memorial To attend Remembrance Sunday at the memorial contact Anna Pearce on 07724 944960

COMMUNITY

Ruth Lawrence discovers the history of almshouses, a long affordable housing option and charity venture

A

almshouses may conjure
up images of Victorian cottages grouped around
a traditional three sides
of a square but times have changed
and now, almshouses are a dynamic solution to provide high quality, well maintained, affordable accommodation for those who need it most. Benefactors used to come from the aristocracy, clergy or royalty and their charities would often provide
for a particular group of people and particularly women. These days there

Alms linking arms are fewer age restrictions and the charities cater for a wide range of groups and men in addition to the elderly. South Chailey is home to Grantham Close, a delightful cluster of almshouses that I had a chance to visit when I
met Chairperson Jill Bailleux at the beautifully situated homes surrounded by countryside. The 35 flats are provided by the Andros Almshouse Charity, founded by the will of Sybil Grantham in 1952. In addition there is also accommodation provided for visitors to Grantham close. A board of trustees were set up to administer and manage the affairs of the charity. Dr Jack Palmer and Rev Edwin Matthias conceived the idea of sheltered homes for local people in Chailey and the Andros fund almshouses owe their existence to their initiative. Later Rev Edwin Matthias took over as Chairman from Dr Jack Palmer and was instrumental in the building of Grantham close. Currently the Andros charity is administered and managed by 5 trustees and a Chairperson, Jill Baillieux who

Jill stated, “The long-term plan of this Charity would be to provide more accommodation using energy efficient materials thus providing good quality homes. We will be seeking funding to achieve this. We are currently looking into upgrading the current heating system, for 36 flats, to provide a more efficient source of heat for the residents.” They have also recently completed the works on upgrading the communal laundry and kitchen. Anyone wishing to apply for residency at Grantham

In 1965 local GP Dr Jack Palmer became one of the trustees after conceiving of the idea of sheltered homes recently took over from a lifetime trustee of over 40 years, Peter Mulcare. To apply for almshouse accommodation, a person has to meet financial and medical criteria and have a local connection through self or family. Most are around the age of sixty and depending on circumstances, successful applicants will be appointed by the trusteees to a ground or first floor apartment in a single or double storey building. The running costs of the almshouses are funded by weekly contributions paid by the residents. Grantham close is independent living; there are two managers on site who are close at hand should they be needed, when on duty. Residents are encouraged to participate in social activities such as keep fit, lunches, outings and bingo.

Close who has a connection with the surrounding area and fulfills our criteria, the trustees will be happy to look at their application. I ended my visit with a peek at one
of the apartments, which was beautifully appointed and filled with natural light. Almshouses are a concept that have stood the test of time and provided numerous people with a home to cherish and enjoy for life. l www.granthamclose.org.uk Call the office on 01273 400466

CHARITY

IT’S ALL ABOUT CHARITY THE SNOWMAN™ SPECTACULAR CHRISTMAS APPEAL 2019 FOR CHESTNUT TREE HOUSE Our son Theo lived for 6 weeks and 2 days – spending the last month of his life at Chestnut Tree House children’s hospice. It felt like home. There were no sterilised corridors, no tubes, no machines beeping. We were greeted by a lovely nurse who gave Theo a brand-new cot and a blue teddy bear to put next to him. Chestnut showed us how to care for Theo – and thanks to them we can remember the times we fed him, changed him, sang songs, took him to the zoo. Every day became a precious memory. I’d like to ask for your help, to bring a magical Christmas to all the children this wonderful local charity will be caring for this season. Raymond Briggs’ beloved character The Snowman™ is once again leading the fundraising campaign to find the £116,450 Chestnut will spend on care for children like Theo over the holidays. A gift from you this Christmas could allow another child, another family, to have precious moments together. Please, support Chestnut Tree House, your local children’s hospice. Because like The Snowman did in Raymond Briggs’s famous story, your donation could transform a child’s life this Christmas. With every best wish to you and your family, Chantelle. VOLUNTEER FOR THE ASSOCIATION OF CARERS A charity that supports unpaid carers throughout East Sussex is looking for more volunteers. The main service offered by Association of Carers is a free respite service, where a volunteer visits a family once a week and spends time with a person with support needs, enabling their carer to have a break. A volunteer might spend time chatting over tea, playing games, or listening to music with the person they support. Or they may simply sit whilst someone sleeps, keeping them safe whilst the carer gets some time to themselves. Jane Caley, who works for the charity, says volunteers would ideally commit regular time for a minimum of one year. This gives people time to settle into a routine and build strong relationships. However, even if you couldn’t commit for this long, they would still love to hear from you. The charity can be very flexible and work around people’s lives. The charity supports volunteers every step of the way, and volunteers are not required to carry out any personal care – the role is simply about providing company and keeping someone safe. You can learn more on their website www.associationofcarers.org.uk or call 01424 722309

MONEY MATTERS

KNOW YOUR CAPITAL GAINS? It’s wise to think about Capital Gains Tax before you get stung, says Robin Stevenson, who also has a timely warning about scammers

is now not automatically covered by the relief. Usefully, the tax legislation gave us a three-year window which allowed the relief to exempt the final period of ownership that didn’t otherwise qualify. But since April 2014 that three-year period has been reduced to 18 months, and it is due to be reduced again from April 2020 to nine months. If you own a property that has not been used as your only or main home throughout your ownership, for whatever reason, then you need to think about Capital Gains Tax. In the above example, the homeowners would have to find additional funding to pay the capital gains tax, which reminds me to mention again the change coming in April next year. I mentioned in a previous issue that capital gains tax is currently payable 31 January after the end of the tax year in which the property disposal took place, this means if you sold the property on 10 April 2019 then any capital gains tax would fall due for payment on 31 January 2021, almost two years later. From April next year this is being changed and the capital gains tax will be payable just 30 days after completion. This is a major change to a long-established tax principle, but perhaps one I can understand, even if 30 days doesn’t give much time for people to sort out their tax affairs. Maybe 90 days would have been better? Finally, just as I write this, a client has telephoned me to say that they have received a telephone t’s happened again. Someone call from HMRC threatening an arrest assumed that their home would be If you own a property that has warrant, the High Court and bankruptcy free of capital gains tax when they they didn’t pay their tax liability. Clearly it was a scam, but the caller was so convincing that my client, a wise businessman with many years’ experience, But in today’s modern world we are finding different situations. A common scenario is two people each own their own wasn’t so sure. I saw an advert on television recently where someone had lost their pension to someone who was happily spending it on a jet-ski holiday. It demonstrated how believable the scams have become and that everyone is a potential victim. There are some horrible people about!
