We sent Robert Veitch back to school this month to receive a proper education at the feet of an expert. We put him in detention with Mrs McCluskey, to learn about her, and her creator, the actress Gwyneth Powell. Here’s his end of term report

or those of us of a certain vintage, having experienced our own daily trials, tribulations and little victories at school, we would come home to watch others doing the same on television at Grange Hill. Years later, the names trip off the tongue quite easily; Trisha Yates, Precious Matthews, Zammo McGuire, Roland Browning, Gonch Gardener, Danny Kendall, Pogo Patterson and of course the adorable Fay Lucas. There were teachers too, Mr Keating, Mr Hopwood, Miss Mooney, and Scruffy McGuffy. At the summit of the pyramid strode a force of nature, unseen in children’s television before or since – the mighty Mrs McCluskey.

IN DETENTION WITH

Mrs McCluskey Wind the clock forward a generation or more and Mrs McCluskey is sipping coffee in front of me. Except it’s not ‘Bridget the Midget’ it’s her creator, the actress Gwyneth Powell. As a child, Gwyneth spent her early years in Gorton, moving to Cheadle Hulme in 1955. She attended Cheadle Hulme Grammar School for Girls from 1957. “It’s so long ago,” she recalled, “Manchester has changed so much since then.” “Jean Cannon was the teacher that changed my life,” Gwyneth remembered. “She taught English and Drama and gave me my first role, as Kate in The Taming of The Shrew.” It was the lead, and young Miss Powell loved the experience. Decades later Gwyneth was performing her one-woman show at the Oast Theatre in Tonbridge, when a disembodied voice in the audience was audible during the performance “My 8 SUSSEX LIVING | September 2019

sister gave her, her first role.” Actor and voice met afterwards and the heckler, Muriel Cannon, was Jean Cannon’s sister. “I was quickly reunited with Jean, who was living in Horsham. The teacher that changed my life couldn’t recall my days as a pupil,” noted Gwyneth with a twinkle.

Amateur dramatics is a great way to enjoy acting safely. Get a proper job and do it for fun “I did enjoy school, but I was a goodie, goodie and never bunked off. I became a prefect, which involved dressing up in mini graduation gowns, which I loved. Eventually I became head girl.” Gwyneth wanted to be a teacher and undertook her teacher training at Goldsmiths, University of London.

“I auditioned for the National Youth Theatre. I was mostly in the wardrobe,” she chuckled. “Eventually they let me on stage and I played Ursula in Ben Jonson’s comedy Bartholomew Fair at the Royal Court Theatre.” It was September 1966 and the production also featured a young David Suchet as Ezekiel Edgworth. One doubts if the ‘little grey cells’ of the future Poirot could have predicted their futures. Gwyneth continued, “I got good notices and there was an opportunity to try for a professional theatre career. It was too good an opportunity to miss, so I got myself a wonderful old-fashioned agent who wore an astrakhan collar and walked with a silver-tipped cane.” When a proposed film with Robert Shaw and the American director George Cukor failed to materialise Gwyneth moved to Worthing for two years in repertory theatre. She played in The Beggars Opera with Barbara

Windsor. Off stage, she met fellow actor Alan Leith. They married in 1971 and settled in Worthing. At the same time, Gwyneth’s big break came along; “On our wedding day in 1971, I was given the leading role in a London Weekend Television 13-part series called The Guardians, and followed this with many TV series playing opposite stars such as Ian Mckellan, Kenneth More, and Albert Finney,” Gwyneth told me. Further to The Guardians there were several guest appearances on television including; Z Cars, Play for Today, Dixon of Dock Green, Coronation Street and Emmerdale Farm. “I played five characters in five series of Dixon of Dock Green. Jack Warner liked actors he was comfortable with and knew to be reliable.” Then out of the blue, the role that defined her career came calling. “I had never seen Grange Hill, never heard of it, but I thought, if you were offered a role without having to audition, you should probably accept it. I rang my brother. I could hear him down the phone, asking his children’s opinions. ‘Do it, do it,’ came crackling down the line. So I thought, why not? I had no expectations of the role. It’s only in the years after the impact has become obvious, because people still remember it and talk about it.” Mrs McCluskey was designed to be a formidable creation. “Colin Cant (the Producer) gave me leeway in my interpretation of the role, which allowed me to make a statement in my portrayal. She was modern, firm but fair, loved fashion and had a sense of humour. At one point I had it written into my contract that her clothes had to come from Harvey Nichols.” Gwyneth’s first episode aired in December 1980 at the start of series four and she stayed until the end of series fourteen. At that time there were very few young women employed

as headmistresses, and few with the opportunity to apply. “So it was groundbreaking, and in a sense ‘she’ was inspirational. As a result more women applied for headships” in the years that followed. Critics claimed the programme encouraged bad behaviour, but viewers identified with it, because it reflected society. There was a balance between serious and humorous storylines. Issues dealt with over the years included bullying, racism, knife crime, divorce, drug addiction and child abuse. “Mark

Gwyneth nodded, “The children were so real. The writers teased out their natural characteristics and integrated them into the scripts. Some children came from stage school; some came from a drama group in Islington. They were encouraged to keep honest rough edges in their performance and use their natural energy.” Their performances gelled seamlessly with

DD the professional actors, the ‘teachers’. “There was an obvious warmth across the whole production so it was almost always a very happy set. The spirit was tremendous. We would have parties from time to time, and the ‘teachers’ would make fun of themselves, imitating the children.” “Technically it was a good training ground for the children. They learnt discipline; being on time, learning lines, hitting cues and marks, not wasting other peoples time.” Besides acting, the children still had to complete their formal education, so tutors were always present. For some like Todd Carty and Sue Tully it was the start of greater things. Both graduated to Eastenders and “Sue recently directed Line of Duty. Anthony Minghella was our script editor for several years.” The great irony of qualifying as a teacher, but never practising isn’t lost on Gwyneth. I suggested her influence had permeated further across the nation as a fictional headmistress, than she would ever have achieved in a real classroom. She laughed out loud “I know, but I was ‘teaching’ and my mother was delighted.” At times, Mrs McCluskey’s influence was bemusing; “I visited a school and while I was there, they asked me to comment on their timetable and compare it to mine at Grange Hill.” As tears of laughter rolled down her face Gwyneth continued, “They had a real timetable, we had a script.” “There have been several reunions over the years. In recent times, I’ve met some of the children’s children,

which is lovely.” Almost all have jobs in the real world, but there’s still the opportunity to relive their years at Grange Hill. “They support each other and remain a team. It’s not as easy as people might think,” being a former child star. “I kept in touch with George A Cooper (Mr Griffiths) who lived in Petersfield. Mr Bronson (Michael Sheard) was a scary character, but a lovely man. The wig was planned when he joined the cast. I still exchange Christmas cards with Mike Cronin who played the PE Teacher ‘Bullit’ Baxter.” By 1990 I had gone as far as I could, I told them I wanted to move on the following year. In terms of doing other work ‘she’ was becoming restrictive and I wanted to try other things. In March 1991 Mrs McCluskey retired from Grange Hill, but Gwyneth Powell continued to work. Having purchased the rights to EM Delafield’s Diary of a Provincial Lady, Gwyneth toured it as a one-woman show. Guest appearances on TV

continued and included Hetty Wainthrop Investigates, A Touch of Frost, Peak Practice, Holby City, Heartbeat and Ashes to Ashes. More recently Gwyneth reached a new audience in the Greg Davies creation, Man Down. “I’m still in touch with Greg (a qualified teacher who did actually teach!), Mike Wozniak

The children were encouraged to keep honest rough edges in their performance and use their natural energy and Roisin Conaty.” Man Down was rewritten after Rik Mayall died. “Rik was the most charming, gorgeous, beautiful man, a life force, not at all like his on-screen persona. He told me I was his one and only on screen romance during his career.” Imagine that, Mrs McCluskey and Lord Flashheart romantically inclined! A Manchester lass in her youth,

We’ve been in Hurstpierpoint since 1987 and I love it here.” “It’s a great thing to have a village theatre. Amateur dramatics is a great way to enjoy acting safely. He grew up less than a mile from the theatre and played some great Shakespearean roles.” The theme of education has ebbed and flowed through Gwyneth’s life and now it’s gone full circle. After her own education, training to teach, acting the role of a headmistress, and working with a former teacher, she has recently become a drama examiner at Trinity College in London. As detention was ending, there was one question remaining. What’s your advice for the current generation of school children? She paused… “Get that education… you’ll need it.” l

UKFOR Reducing food waste, helping those in food poverty and keeping unwanted food out of landfill seemed like a good idea, and so in 2017, UKHarvest was born. Stacey Cullen continues the story

wo years ago, UKHarvest was founded for a simple purpose; to protect the environment by rescuing good food destined for landfill and to feed those in food poverty, providing food for the old and young alike in desperate need of the nutrition. Over the past two years we have evolved into an organisation known for its collaboration, partnership work and excellent education programmes. By using food as a medium, we have been able to educate all on how to minimise food waste, bring isolated and lonely people together, nourishing their minds, bodies and souls. Today,

UKHarvest delivers a broad range of programmes and our environmental offer is still as relevant as it was in 2017. UKHarvest currently supports over 103 charities; delivering 25,000 meals per week across Sussex, Hampshire, Brighton and Hove, saving over 600 tonnes of good food from going to landfill and are the only free food rescue organisation operating along the south coast. We have educated over 3,500 people and worked with a broad range of people within the community, all who need support on how to make the most of the nutritional value of the food they purchase and to reduce food waste. We use rescued, surplus food in all of our workshops, awareness raising events and surplus suppers/lunches (pop-up restaurants). At the beginning of this year we moved into our new premises in the centre of Chichester where we can now

work more intensively with our local communities and train and support our 60+ volunteers. To keep us true to our roots, we want to be out in the community as much as we can, educating and supporting those most in need of nutrition, whilst looking after the environment. Our dedicated team of volunteers is key to this, supporting us with awareness events and workshops, and onsite with the preparation of the crates that go out each day to our recipients. This year’s Harvest time is going to be very special for us as we will be collaborating with our local secondary and primary schools who are very generously donating their Harvest Festival offerings to UKHarvest. It’s a massive undertaking as we are expecting the donations to be in excess of five tonnes. We will be filming the journey of the food donated by the children from school to the charities we support, with the children writing individual messages on their donations. Apple Rose Tart

Got some apples? Feeling creative? Impress your nearest and dearest while expressing your artistic side, writes Jo Grey For the Pastry 200g plain flour 125g unsalted butter, diced 30g icing sugar 1 large egg yolk For the Crème pâtissière 350ml full-fat milk 4 large egg yolks 100g caster sugar 15g plain flour 15g cornflour ½ tsp vanilla extract For the Apple topping 4-5 fresh red apples, quartered, cored, and sliced very thin (keep in lemon water until ready to use) juice of 1 fresh lemon, added to a large bowl of cold water 2 tbs of warmed honey or golden syrup

METHOD Sift the flour into a large bowl, add the diced butter and rub together until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. Mix in the icing sugar and then add the egg yolk and mix to a firm dough adding a little cold water if necessary. Chill for 30 minutes. Roll the pastry onto a lightly floured board, to 5mm thickness, and use to line a 25cm loose-based tart tin. Heat the oven to gas mark 5, 190°C, or 170°C fan. Line the tart with nonstick baking paper and ceramic baking beans. Bake for 15 minutes. Remove the paper and beans, then bake for 5 more minutes. Leave to cool. To make the crème pâtissière, heat the milk almost to boiling and then leave to cool for a few minutes. Put the egg yolks and sugar into a bowl and whisk until thick and pale. Add the

flour and cornflour then whisk until smooth. Gradually whisk in the milk. Return the mixture to a clean pan and stir over a medium heat until it begins to thicken. Stir vigorously, reduce the heat to low, stirring continuously for 2-3 minutes, until the mixture is very thick. Remove from the heat and stir in the vanilla extract. Pour the crème pâtissière into the tart case and spread level. Chill for 4 hours, or until set. Drain the apple slices and microwave for 3 minutes until pliable. Roll a slice of apple into a tight spiral and stand it up vertically in the custard. Continue to arrange apple slices in a concentric pattern around the first one, building a rose pattern. Repeat until the top of the tart is completely covered with apple roses. Brush the warmed honey or syrup over the apples. l

IT’S WARM INSIDE Get ready to cosy up this autumn with Lisa de Silva’s guide to your heating options

s our thoughts turn to the colder months ahead, now is the time to think about heating your home. There’s still time to get organised! Central Heating Most homes will have traditional gas fired central heating, and this is still a cost-effective way of heating your home, especially if you have a modern

condensing boiler. Where mains gas is not available, liquid petroleum gas (LPG) or heating oil can be used to run a central heating system, but they have to be delivered by road and stored in a tank. Electric Heating Many homes not connected to the gas grid use electricity for heating. It can be more expensive than gas, so the most cost-effective form uses night storage heaters, which run on a cheaper nighttime rate (Economy 7). Heat-retaining bricks are warmed through the night and slowly release the heat during the following day. Electric radiators are

also available – but they can use up a lot of electricity very quickly unless your home is well insulated. Underfloor Heating Do you wish you could get rid of unsightly radiators? Why not consider underfloor heating. There are two types: electric underfloor heating involves wires installed beneath or within the flooring; water underfloor heating consists of a series of pipes connected to your boiler or central heating system. Underfloor heating can be more energy efficient than radiators as the heat is more evenly distributed

throughout a room, provided there is good insulation. The other advantage is that the warmth is produced where you want it: at floor level. Initial set-up costs can be considerable, so it’s important to take a long-term view. Stoves If you’re not keen on open fires, why not consider having a woodburning or multifuel stove fitted instead? but with more heat efficiency. They are generally used to heat a particular room but can also be attached to the central heating system. When choosing your stove, take professional advice on the size and heat output required and choose from a wide range of styles – from traditional country cottage to super modern Scandi chic. Solar Water Heating Solar water heating systems use the heat from the sun to warm domestic water, using solar thermal energy (STE) panels fitted to the roof of your home. interest in relocating. The house, previously extended in the 1970s, now needed a considerable amount of renovation, along with their plans to further extend it. Their neighbour, an architect, introduced the idea of an entire new build, explaining that their triple plot would provide far more scope to create a spacious home with a more logical layout. “The thought of demolishing our cosy family home was quite terrifying at first, but it was an unspoken dream of mine to build a house from spec,” recalls Anya. “I just didn’t imagine I would get a chance to actually do it!” The couple were referred by Robin’s brother to an innovative company specialising in designing and digitally manufacturing bespoke passive homes for individual clients. “We were impressed with their ethos,” explains Anya. “We also felt that by using a small company, we were

assured of their full focus, and the benefit of their fresh approach to design.” Anya sketched a layout to help the architect envisage her requirements. “I’m keen on symmetry and so started with a main central hallway, from which the rooms would flow,” describes Anya. “I knew we wanted en suites for all the bedrooms, and a pool in the basement. Suddenly my unspoken dream was becoming a reality, as I worked together with the architect until we had the floor plans for our new home.” In May 2015 the family moved out and their home was knocked down. “My husband was enthusiastic about the project, but was clear that this was my project and that his only stipulation was for a place for his wine,” says Anya. She was thorough in her attention to the practicalities of the layout; “Robin is up before me most mornings, and so I insisted that we needed a buffer, in

interesting combination of lines and angles. This is warmed by the creamy neutral hue of the walls. “We needed big canvas art, as anything smaller would be lost. I found these online and they were shipped over from China in rolls. I had them framed locally and it proved extremely cost effective. Their hints of blue and yellow gave me the accent tones for this room,” she says. One could say that Anya’s profession as a medic is reflected in the meticulous design of such an aesthetically impressive and sustainable property. “We have been so fortunate to have been involved in creating this house, its bespoke design allows the whole family to enjoy every part of it and it’s wonderful to see our boys growing up here.” l

Peter Erridge has turned from gums in the mouth to gums in the ground… he has even found his very own Pepperidge tree! Read on to find out more

fter 45 years in dentistry my interest in gums has shifted from patients to trees with the ‘gum’ in their common name. As a volunteer garden guide much background knowledge is gained about trees. In Britain the groups of gum trees are Eucalyptus, Liquidamber and Nyssa. The word ‘gum’ has been given to these trees as many of them exude a resin from breaks in the bark. A range of aromas are given off by various species of eucalyptus, for example lemon or peppermint, both of which are preferable to that from mouths with poorly cleansed teeth. The leaves from selected species are used by industry to produce a range of eucalyptus oils which are used in nasal and chest decongestants, throat lozenges, toothpastes, antiseptic agents, soaps and more. The food industry uses this oil as flavouring and for their antimicrobial activity. Eucalypts have been around for 35 million years mainly in Australia with some in South America. Fifty

thousand years ago humans arrived in Australia and they aided the spread of eucalypts which subsequently covered about 70% of the forest area. These trees take up a lot of water making the ground unsuitable for many other plants including crops. In the 20th century the marshy areas around Rome were planted with eucalyptus trees to dry the ground and reduce the risk of malaria. Most of the world’s 900 species are found in Australia, the southerly

latitude of which corresponds with northern Africa, meaning that the climate of Europe is too cool for most species. In Britain only the

Gunnii and Nitens varieties can withstand the usual outdoor winter temperatures. These can grow as much as 2m [7ft.] a year and reach 10-30m [30-100ft.] and are being grown for biomass for power generation. Recently among many seedlings, a French nurseryman found a low growing specimen, up to 2m [6ft.] which is now marketed. Annual pruning of this variety, E. gunnii ‘France Bleu’, creates a bush form. Surprisingly Eucalyptus bonsai kits are advertised. Eucalyptus flowers are rich in nectar which can lead to flavoured honey being available. The eucalyptus bark peels away in ribbons leaving the trunk with patches of new coloured bark. This creates the problems of a tatty appearance and discarded strips of bark at the tree base. Another disadvantage is that dead leaves are discarded throughout the year. Regular trimming back of young trees encourages new growth with attractive grey-blue foliage. Liquidamber styraciflua or Sweetgum exudes a pine-like resin. In the UK they are grown as ornamental trees in particular for the dramatic red colours of the foliage in autumn. The black gum tree has the botanical name Nyssa sylvatica and common name of Tupelo. N. sylvatica flowers have a sweet smelling aroma which attracts bees but they are better known for the spectacular autumn foliage colour ranging through yellow, orange to bright red. It came as a surprise to me that the Tupelo is also known as the ‘Pepperidge tree’, which has the homophonic overtones of the sound of my name! l

PETS door so I intend to take full advantage. Watch out squirrels… September is also the start of the academic year. Whilst our Juniors are grown-up now, this still has an impact. My morning walk, which takes me past the local primary school, has been rather quiet during August. When I first came to live with ‘Them Indoors’, and unlike the Boss who had grown up with his own Juniors, I was a bit unsure of youngsters. However, a local family with a litter of four children, decided to befriend me, being calm and kind around me and giving me treats. I now lick my lips when I see them coming and have rather missed our regular little meetings.

I don’t like squirrels, and I have a long-standing ambition to get up close and personal with one I always feel a bit sorry for the children starting school in their new warm winter uniforms, as once they are safely returned to the classroom and the holidays are officially over, the summer usually makes a final resurgence. ow I know newness is conventionally associated with the spring and its fresh shoots, knock-kneed lambs, baby bunnies and dive-bombing, unairworthy fledglings, tempting an innocent Border Terrier into instinctive reactions, however, I reckon September has a good claim to being the month of fresh starts. To begin with, it’s the first month of autumn and with it comes a wave of new produce in the garden and countryside, presenting opportunities for an enterprising small dog. We have a walnut tree in our garden, and when ‘Them Indoors’ first moved here years ago, back in the days of my predecessor

and Boss, the late, great, Rolo, they fretted about knowing when the walnuts were ripe; it’s easy – just watch the squirrels. They seem to know instinctively when the nuts are ready and can clear the tree in a day. Which is where I come in. Like most dogs, and certainly all Border Terriers I’ve ever met, I don’t like squirrels, and I have a long-standing ambition to get up close and personal with one. For a brief time, we have our very own squirrel bait growing by our back-

wiry overcoat to keep the weather out. The top coat keeps growing and has to be removed by a process called ‘handstripping’ which is best not mentioned on social media unless you want lots of attention from anonymous young ladies who are in need of a warm coat themselves. This procedure takes place quarterly which means it’s a bit random as to whether the state of my fur matches the prevailing weather. This year, I struggled through the warmer months looking like a woolly Mammoth, and now that it’s autumn, I’ve been groomed and, if you’ll excuse the pun, am rather a bare Teddy! Still, I shall look forward to a September of fresh starts and a new season with everything it brings, appropriately attired or not. l

Elizabeth Kay offers Sussex Living readers her thoughts on recent reads that have caught her attention. She gives her views on a selection of books from different genres which may capture your interest

MY SISTER, THE SERIAL KILLER

by Oyinkan Braithwaite (Atlantic Books)

by Charli Howard (Penguin) This is a painfully honest account of an anorexic, who suffered from depression, OCD, bulimia and anxiety. Like so many who go down this path, Charli wanted to be ‘perfect’, a carbon copy of the girls she saw in magazines. She was rather hairy and a bit chubby, so she decided to become a model in order to be envied the way she’d envied those cover girls herself. She went on a diet. The urge to be thin and to be signed by

The agency wants her to be even thinner, and gives her a hip measurement which is ludicrous. They don’t tell her to lose weight, because that’s legally questionable, they just tell her they want her to ‘look the best she can’. She loses so much weight that she has no energy, is physically weak and breathless and experiencing heart palpitations. There is a disclaimer at the start of the book saying that if you are struggling with an eating disorder this isn’t the book for you as it’s not a selfhelp manual. But for anyone trying to cope with an anorexic it’s a must.

This is the story of two sisters. The narrator is Korede, the older one, a former hospital nurse who is tall and angular and not very pretty. The younger is Ayoola, devastatingly pretty, wayward, and a psychopath with no moral compass whatsoever. Korede’s role is to clean up after her sister’s misdemeanours. The book is set in Nigeria, and there’s a father, dead ten years, who was the worst sort of control freak and must have had some sort of impact, although that doesn’t totally explain Ayoola’s behaviour. You can speculate endlessly about these sharply-drawn and intriguing characters. This is a black comedy, extremely well written and longlisted for the Women’s Prize for Fiction this year. The opening paragraph is one of the best hooks I have ever read: Ayoola summons me with these words – Korede, I killed him. I had hoped I would never hear these words again. This is followed by: I bet you didn’t know that bleach masks the smell of blood. And we’re straight into the action, with Ayoola perched on the toilet seat, her dress stained with dried blood, faintly worried that her sister will be cross with her…

BARBIAN AND THE WISHING STAR

by Claire Walker (Austin Macauley Publishers) It makes a pleasant change to read a book for very young children that is printed on good quality paper that won’t disintegrate when used as a hat or part of a hamster maze! The storyline is pure fantasy, and won’t increase any child’s knowledge of the galaxy, but it’s good fun and starts with every child’s favourite toy – an empty cardboard box. I think this makes acceptable the premise of constructing a spaceship from it, and heading for the moon, as it’s clearly impossible. As is Barbian the friendly metal Diggle dragon, who is George’s playmate, and is depicted behaving just the way imaginary friends do when you’re a small child. The illustrations are bright and cheerful and

But that’s just an adult being picky. There are lots of Diggle dragons, which you can find at the back of the book, and they’re all rather cute and designed to appeal to both boys and girls. The prospect of a life in social work is an intriguing one. Nick Willmore, a tutor and lecturer, explains how those who might be tempted by a change in direction can make the prospect a reality

or many years the role of the social worker has been mocked and reviled in equal parts, yet people are still lining up to join the profession. Why? For many, it’s a real opportunity to make a difference in the lives of others that need a bit of help. As Ghandi once said, ‘the mark of a civilised society is how it treats those most in need’ and there is a satisfaction in being one of those that contributes. Social workers work in many different roles; whether it’s supporting vulnerable children and their families, undertaking adoption assessments, arranging care and support of older adults, or helping people with disabilities maintain as much independence as possible. What is common in all these roles is the ability to talk to people at a difficult time in their lives, being able to see the key issues, and planning the best way forward. So what makes a social worker? Without doubt it’s someone that readily gets on with others and is able to retain

a cool head under pressure. It is also someone that can build up a toolkit of ideas and theories that will inform the way they work. Whilst there is often cynicism about the profession, that it only knows theory and has no common sense; when training social workers we try and help them see the good and bad aspects of theory. After all a theory is something that has been seen to work for some people – the trick is being able to see which one is relevant in a situation. That is why practical experience is an essential element of the training. Social work training consists of two parts, the academic and the practical. All social work training involves the student completing some academic study. Alongside this students are placed with an

experienced social worker, learning how this academic study makes a difference in the real world. This gives the student time to think about the people they are asked to support, and a senior colleague to talk to about what they should do next. Often the people being supported by students say they are some of the best workers they experience, as they have time to reflect and are keen to listen to work out the best way forward, elements many qualified staff say are difficult to make time for. To get the necessary amount of practice time, each student needs to be sponsored by a social work agency, usually a council or care provider. Employers will often have an academic institution they work with, such as a local university or distance learning provider. Most social work training

organisations offer courses for both undergraduate (degree) and postgraduate awards (often at Masters level). The degree level is aimed at people with some educational qualifications (such as ‘A’ levels or a foundation

award) whilst the post-graduate course requires a degree or equivalent. The advantage of the post-graduate award is that it is usually two years compared to the degree’s three. Students taking up social work have tended to be in

their mid-twenties or older. Having life experience does make a difference when you are looking for ideas to help someone solve their issues. Subjects studied during a course could include psychology, sociology, child development, social work theory, social policy and social research as well as regular consideration of legislation and ethics. Most people find a way into training after working in social care (as a support worker or care manager) as this is a good way to experience the role without the commitment of years of study. There are some fast-track courses that have been developed (mainly in Children’s or Mental Health services) and recently agreement has been given for an apprenticeship course in social work. There is no best option. When I look round my tutor group, each student’s journey has been different, but they are all keen to become a professional social worker and I am keen to help them achieve their goal. l

n our world of instant connection, loneliness in the young and elderly is an unfortunate and little examined reality. I recently met Julie Rezac who, together with a friend developed the Life Stories project, which aims to confront this pressing issue with a beautifully elegant solution. Five years ago, Julie was working as a carer and found she was often the only one visiting an elderly person. She realised older people have a hugely important role as the holders of stories and therefore our collective past. Why not pair a young person with an older person and collect the stories that sprung from their meetings? Using a toolkit developed by a software designer, participants from a school and a care home are linked by a co-ordinator from either organisation who has access to the software. The premise is simple; pair a teenager, aged 16 or over, with an elderly person using a match decided by a series of questions that create the most fruitful connection. After five training sessions a series of eight meetings are arranged to enable conversations between both participants. As the meetings usually take place in the elderly personâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s

Books are presented at a celebration attended by family and friends home, there is always a chaperone to accompany the young person and the older person has two training sessions to prepare them for the meetings with the teenagers. The young person creates a book based on their conversations, complete with photos. The book is professionally published as a hardbound, and further copies can be made available. The books are presented at a celebration attended by family and friends and are publicly available through the Bridging Ages website library.

The consequences of linking young and old to share, write and publish their unique stories are far reaching and overwhelmingly positive. Many keep in touch and form trusting relationships which build long-term benefits for both participantsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; wellbeing. The project recognises that no one has led an ordinary life, that each

person is special and that each has contributed to our collective history. The benefits for the teenagers are manifold; they build self confidence and social skills and have to combine core skills such as writing, social studies, psychology, journalism, computer skills, photography and history. The teenagers learn about changes in society from someone who lived through them and challenge stereotypes about the lack of connection between young and old while gaining a unique achievement for their future CV or university application. Older people gain meaningful social contact which is particularly beneficial during the winter months when they can feel more isolated in their homes. They have the opportunity to reflect on their lifeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s lessons and accumulated wisdom while sharing their knowledge with an actively interested youngster.

The finished books become a cherished family document which will always be there for future generations to read and learn from. Imagine if our ancestors had left such records behind and the insights we could gain into lives directly linked to our own. Schools benefit from the project too; students are integrated into the wider community and this is particularly relevant to boarding school pupils who otherwise tend to lack ties to a local community. The voluntary service encourages civic values which foster

links to local community and contribute to a school’s role in that wider locale. The project is applying for grants to enable it to spread further. So far around fifty books have been created but the potential for growth is enormous. Sponsorship, legacies and funding is being actively sought as are potential schools to run projects. Julie pointed out that any Parish Council, organisation or community group can run a Life Stories project. Life Stories will be working with a Brighton based befriending organisation

called Time To Talk Befriending and Brighton College. The project is keen to work with university students too. One of the most transformative insights came from a young participant who concluded, “the best classroom in the world is at the feet of an elderly person,” which surely demonstrates the immense value of this project in building connections between the generations which are fundamental to a healthier society. l

MAYFIELD Once named as the sweetest village, modern day Mayfield still lives up to this apt description. Local resident Peter d’Aguilar takes us on an historical amble of the village

nyone closing their eyes to conjure up an image of a classic English village might well find themselves looking at Mayfield. Nestled in the lush countryside of the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty nine miles south of Tunbridge Wells, this lively, picturesque village has a vibrant community, an attractive Tudor high street still full of well-stocked and friendly shops, two traditional pubs and a plethora of local clubs, events and activities. No wonder, therefore, that Mayfield came top in a 2017 newspaper poll to choose the Best Village in Britain, and also headed Visit England’s selection of Britain’s

prettiest villages, with particular reference to its cultural activities and charming heritage, as well as winning Gold in the 2018 Parishes in Bloom scheme. Mayfield’s colourful history stretches back over a thousand years, earning itself a mention in the Domesday Book of 1087. The village sign shows the figure of a young woman and children in a flower-covered meadow, illustrating the Saxon origin of the village name – Maghefeld or Maid’s Field. A popular local legend tells the story of how St Dunstan vanquished the Devil. He was working at his forge when the Devil, disguised as an attractive woman, attempted to lead him astray. However, Dunstan spotted the Devil’s cloven hooves and grabbed his nose with a pair of red-hot tongues. As a result of this legend, Mayfield’s Anglican church is dedicated to St

Dunstan, who later became Archbishop of Canterbury between 960 and 988 AD. As well as St Dunstan’s, Mayfield also has a Roman Catholic church, a Free Church and a Baptist Chapel. St Dunstan is also credited with founding Mayfield Palace, which was previously owned by the Kings of Wessex and became one of the great residences of the medieval Archbishops of Canterbury. Its ecclesiastical connections ceased in 1567, when it was bought by Sir Thomas Gresham, founder of the Royal Exchange. Queen Elizabeth I was one of his house guests. The Dowager Duchess of Leeds later purchased the palace and presented it to The Sisters of the Holy Child Jesus, who converted it into a Roman Catholic boarding school for girls in 1872. Nearly 150 years later, it is still going strong.

In 1556 four Protestant martyrs from Mayfield were burned for heresy. To this day, they are remembered through the annual Mayfield Carnival and Bonfire Parade, part of the East Sussex bonfire season. Each September, the procession marches through the village lit by flaming torches, climaxing with a dramatic firework display. The Mayfield Bonfire Boys and Belles is one of the oldest bonfire societies in the country. Like many places in East Sussex, Mayfield was an important centre for iron production in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Mayfield’s prosperity reached its zenith during the boom in the Wealden iron industry and many of its finest houses date

Mayfield was an important centre for iron production in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries from that era. When the industry went into decline, smuggling took over. The Mayfield Gang, led by Gabriel Tomkins, was notorious for owling (wool smuggling). Unlike other gangs, they did not generally use violence and distributed most of their profits, Robin Hood-like, amongst the local community. In the autumn of 1830, local land workers were caught up in the swing riots, which demanded reasonable agricultural wages and took their name from the fictitious Captain Swing – the mythical figurehead of the movement. The army was called in to suppress them and a number of local workers were imprisoned or transported to the colonies.

With the opening in 1880 of the Cuckoo railway line between Hailsham and Tunbridge Wells, Mayfield railway station was built to serve the village. The station closed in 1965 following the Beeching Report. The station building is now a private house and the old railway line is now the A267 Mayfield bypass. Appropriately, May is a special month for Mayfield. The celebrated biennial Mayfield Festival of Music and the Arts takes place in May, and 2020 will mark the festival’s 50th Anniversary. The Mayfair celebrates traditional May activities, with local children dancing round the Maypole,

Morris Men, Mummers and a host of stalls and attractions. Likewise, the Mayfield Duathlon takes place in May. Mayfield also hosts a Fringe Festival, an Art Trail, a Slow Short Film Festival and Film on Friday – the Mayfield Film Society. Christmas is a magical time in the village, with Christmas lights and late-night shopping, plus the ever-popular Live Crib - when girls from the local school re-enact the nativity along the high street and in the school chapel; complete with candles, a choir of angels and a real baby Jesus and donkey. Overlooked by the Scout Hut and the Memorial Hall (home to the popular Phoenix Theatre Company, or Mayfield Phoenix Players), Court Meadow is a stretch of green space with beautiful views, a children’s playground, a football pitch, a skateboard park and a tarmac basketball area. Mayfield cricket club can trace its origins back to 1750 and now fields four teams every Saturday. The First XI currently plays in the top division of the Sussex County League. The buoyant Colts section meets every Friday evening throughout the season and the smart new pavilion has a bar and sports television. Just north of the village off the A267 is the Grade ll* Argos Hill Windmill. Dating from 1835, it is one of only fifty post mills remaining in England. On certain days of the year, the mill is open to the public. The eminent Victorian poet Coventry Patmore once described Mayfield as the ‘sweetest village’ – and it remains so today! l

ACID REFLUX EXPLAINED

Gastroenterologist Dr Keith Hine discloses the symptoms, causes and possible treatments of Gastro-oesophageal Reflux Disease

he oesophagus (gullet) is the muscular tube that connects the back of the mouth to the stomach. It is about 15 inches in length. After swallowing, food is pushed down the oesophagus by waves of peristalsis - these are rhythmic contractions of the muscles in the wall of the oesophagus. At the lower end of the oesophagus is the cardiac ‘sphincter’, which is a circular muscle that acts as a valve and helps to prevent the stomach secretions getting back into the oesophagus. If this sphincter is weakened, gastro-oesophageal reflux may result. Gastro-oesophageal Reflux Disease (GORD) is the commonest cause of indigestion in the western world with 30% of the population experiencing significant reflux (heartburn) at least once per week. What causes GORD? Some people are born with a weak sphincter. In others, the presence of a hiatus hernia, where a small part of the upper section of the stomach slips up through the diaphragm, may cause the reflux. Being overweight may increase the pressure inside the abdomen and encourage

reflux. Various dietary constituents, such as fats and spices, could also reduce the tightness of the sphincter, as do some drugs. Strong alcohol may aggravate the symptoms by irritating the inflamed lining of the oesophagus. Clinical investigation may not be required in younger patients with typical symptoms. However, when the first symptoms occur after the age of 55 years or if there is any difficulty in swallowing, investigation is essential. Usually the investigation of choice is

Antacids could help to relieve the heartburn and they are more effective if combined with an alginate

endoscopy but sometimes a barium swallow may be ordered. What is the treatment? Some people respond to simple measures such as losing weight, avoiding heavy meals shortly before going to bed, and sleeping with their head raised in bed. Lying in bed on the left side is also helpful since the body of stomach, which is mainly on the left side of the abdomen, becomes a sump to hold the gastric contents. If these simple measures fail to control the symptoms some medication may be helpful. Antacids could help to relieve the heartburn and they are more effective if combined with an alginate which forms a raft on the top of the stomach contents. These alginate/antacids are available over the counter and your pharmacist can advise. If further treatment is required, drugs called ‘H2 receptor antagonists’ or ‘proton pump inhibitors’ both reduce the strength of acid produced by the stomach. Once again, many of these are available over the counter in small doses but if they are required in the longer term or in a larger dose you should consult your GP. Your GP may also decide about surgical intervention which is necessary in the small proportion of patients with GORD in whom medical treatment proves ineffective. l

As it’s back to school this month, we asked Sasha Kanal to educate herself in the ways of the Japanese… in the ways of the ninja

RELEASE THE NINJA INSIDE!

hat does the word ‘ninja’ conjure up for you? Mysterious Japanese warriors: silent, skilful, athletic – and deadly? That’s the inspiration for the ninja warrior workout, minus the ‘deadly’ part. It’s a dynamic form of exercise that can develop strength, agility, speed and flexibility. Its popularity has inspired a successful TV show on both sides of the Atlantic, which pits competitors against an obstacle course that tests mental and physical abilities. This balance of mind and body is the essence of the ninja warrior workout. The exercises are for upper and lower body. And they start with the humble press up. Done correctly, with a straight spine, this works your arms, shoulder, chest, back and abdomen, building strength and stability. Real ninjas will move onto ‘Spiderman’ press ups – basically press

ups on one leg. As you lower yourself for the first time, move your right knee towards your right elbow and back, then on the second press up you move left knee to left elbow, and so on. It might help to imagine you’re climbing a building on a secret mission! The chin up is next. These are hard and many people struggle to do a full one, but it’s one of the best ways to

Over time, you can gain flexibility by doing them with palms facing away. Three ninja exercises for your lower body can build agility, speed

and strength. The first is the jump squat – and it works exactly as you might imagine: from a low start, to an explosive jump, to a low finish, and repeat to fade. Then there’s the power step up. You face a step or box, put your left foot on it and jump up. While you’re up there you switch legs so you land with your left foot on the ground and the right on the step or box. Lastly, ninjas hop. More precisely it’s called a lateral hop and step. You stand on one foot, jump one metre to the side and land on the other, swinging your arms as you go. Ninja warrior training can get serious – but like all the best exercises you can do as much or as little as you want, provided you warm up properly and stop at any sign of discomfort. If this sounds like your kind of thing, or something to do with the kids, there are loads of online resources and experts in the area to speak to. Go ninjas! l

NOT SO FANTASTIC Drowning in a sea of plastic wrapping one Christmas, Alice Guy had an epiphany; it was time to make a change and live plastic free. Chatting amongst her chickens, she told Lisa de Silva about her journey

lastic pollution is a major challenge the world cannot afford to ignore – by 2050 there will be more plastic waste in the world’s oceans than fish. Yet while it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the problem, we can all take steps to reduce the amount of plastic in our lives by changing a few simple habits. Three years ago, Alice Guy, a Sussex-based mum of two, decided to rise to the plastic free challenge. “If someone had told me then that within three years, I’d be shopping in my local greengrocer on a Saturday morning,

zero-waste life for a month. “I thought I can do that. It was the start of a new year and I decided to try living plastic free.” At the time Alice didn’t know much about the environmental and health benefits of plastic free living but made a few initial changes which soon became firm habits. These included to stop online shopping to allow more control over what she was buying and how it was packaged; to only use reusable tote bags for shopping; to never buy bottled water or takeaway coffees and to order her milk from the milkman. From here, the quest to live plastic

Alice’s epiphany came during Christmas 2016. not buying disposable items balances out some of the pricier items. “It’s not about being perfect or feeling guilty, just about making the changes you’re comfortable with and obviously not all of them will be everyone’s cup of tea. We lead a perfectly normal life, it’s just that we’re now conscious consumers and have changed our choices,” Alice explains. “With some things there are

It’s not doing without, it’s just doing it differently.” What’s more, for Alice and her family the benefits have been huge. Aside from the obvious one of helping to save the planet, one of the biggest pluses has been improved physical health and mental wellbeing. “Living this way and shopping locally forces you to slow down which has been a great thing. We eat more seasonally, we live in a less toxic environment and hopefully our kids will grow up with this as their way of life.” The family now do most of their

shopping within a 10-mile radius of their home, spending over 90% of their household budget in local shops which ultimately has a positive impact on the community. “Just do what you can, however little, and help to inspire the next generation and those around you,” urges Alice. In recent years plastic free living has become more normalised and manufacturers and retailers are finally

taking the problem of plastic pollution seriously. As consumer awareness and concern grows, experts believe that packaging will become more important than cost in the purchasing process and many supermarkets are now trialling refillable options and bag-free fruit and veg. IT’S ALL ABOUT CHARITY RADIO STATION GIVES A BIT ‘MORE’ TO ROCKINGHORSE CHILDREN’S CHARITY Rockinghorse children’s charity has received a donation of £1,275.41 from More Radio. The local radio group chose to support Rockinghorse during two of its events this summer. Rockinghorse was the beneficiary charity of More Radio’s East Sussex Awards, which recognised some of the county’s most amazing people and organisations. The awards took place at the Cooden Beach Hotel in BexhillOn-Sea and raised £790 from a raffle held on the night. The charity has also benefited from More Radio Live, which took place in Worthing’s Steyne Gardens. The music event played host to some of the UK’s top tribute acts and raised £485.41 from a raffle and bucket collection during the evening. Terrina Barnes is Corporate Fundraising Manager at Rockinghorse and is very grateful for the support. She says, “We have really enjoyed working with More Radio as beneficiary of these two events. Thanks to More Radio’s support, we are able to increase awareness of our work across both East and West Sussex. As property sales pick up after the summer break, Robin Stevenson looks at tax and the family home

am frequently asked for tax advice on the family home and it is often the same questions that are asked so I thought I would devote this month’s editorial to the subject. Our homes are very emotive, and we get protective of them especially when we discuss tax, but in the eyes of HMRC it is just an asset like any other, the only difference being that your home can attract a very big tax relief, Private Residence Relief. There seems a misconception that we don’t pay tax when we sell our home because of Private Residence Relief, but this isn’t necessarily true. There are several factors that must be considered before that conclusion is reached, and below are a few I have dealt with over the past weeks. If you have occupied the property as your only home throughout your period of ownership, then you are likely to qualify for the tax relief which will stop any gain you make when selling the property being taxed to Capital Gains Tax. But sometimes people have owned the property for some time either before they move in or they keep the property after they move out, and sometimes people have more than one property and live in both at different times of the year. As the exemption only

qualifies for the period that you occupied the property as your main residence, then perhaps you can see why a tax liability might arise. Common problems arise where a married couple each own a property, they might live in one property and keep the other. For tax purposes a married couple can only have one property as their main residence and so an unexpected tax liability might arise should one of them be sold. Another problem arises where someone may buy a property to develop and sell on at a profit. Living in the property whilst it is being developed and claiming Private Residence Relief to stop the gain being taxed will not be completely successful because Private Residence Relief is a Capital Gains Tax Relief whereas buying an asset to develop and sell on at a profit is trading and subject to Income Tax not Capital Gains Tax, and there isn’t a similar relief for Income Tax. There are several interesting tax tribunal cases deciding whether Private Residence Relief is available or not in specific circumstances and maybe I’ll cover these at a later date as they could easily be relevant to the ordinary situations we might find ourselves in. Two examples that immediately come to mind are a house that was also a guest house as well as being the owner’s home, and an unfortunate gentleman who only owned his house for a short period of time before selling it on for a profit. Outside the scope of this editorial but still important when considering Capital Gains Tax on property are the new tax rules coming in from 6th April next year. These will restrict the tax free period at the end of ownership down from 18 months to nine, and cut-back almost to extinction another valuable tax relief available to property owners, Lettings Relief. A different tax which applies to property is Inheritance Tax. As mentioned above the valuable Private Residence Relief is a Capital Gains Tax Relief and there is not a similar relief to Inheritance Tax. This is a particular bone of contention for me because everyone has the same Inheritance Tax rates, yet property prices are much higher in some parts of the country than others and this can turn inheritance tax into a “postcode tax”. The recent introduction of the Residence Nil Rate band has helped soften the blow for some, but the problem still exists. Something else for another time perhaps, the home is often a family’s main asset and so it is perhaps no surprise that a number of arrangements were suggested to remove the family home from Inheritance Tax altogether but these too are proving difficult to be successful in avoiding the Gifts with Reservation of Benefit rules and Pre-Owned Asset Tax. I’ve seen extreme cases where people have transferred the ownership of their homes away from their family to avoid tax! It seems we’ve identified a number of topics for the upcoming months!
