June 2 2022 022 Cover image: Queen Elizabeth II 70th Jubillee
HELLO! June 2022 is a big month for the UK, with Her Majesty the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations over an extended Bank Holiday weekend. There are plenty of official events planned for our region as well as many street and garden parties. Don’t forget Father’s Day on 19th June too. Other events this month include the Big Church Day Out which resumes at Wiston after a twoyear enforced Covid break. If you’ve ever seen the road signs and wondered what it’s all about then read our main charity article. Garden designer Andrew Staib looks at including trees in your garden (space permitting!) and health expert Heather Smith offers some straight-talking weight-loss advice. Fancy a solar-powered car which you never have to charge? This month’s motoring feature looks at the futuristic Aptera with a 70km range which is expected to launch next year. Solar energy for homes is also our topic in this month’s property market feature. We have our regular prize crossword; seasonal recipe and you can also win a family ticket to The Children’s Trust Supercar event at Goodwood. Until next time, enjoy the long days.

The Church of St. Andrew-by-the-Ford, Ford
By Allen Misselbrook, Yapton & Ford local history
boards, at the western end. It is thought that the reason for the white paint was as a navigation aid for river traffic. The Southside aisle was added in the late 12th century and the Chancel extended in the 14th century. During the late 15th and early 16th centuries there appeared to have been a fire which caused a great deal of damage and resulted in a new South wall being built and the addition of the porch.
St Andrews
Sitting quietly in a field on the banks of the river Arun at Ford, east of the Clymping to Arundel, road lies the little parish church of St. Andrew-bythe-Ford. Access to this Grade 1 listed building was originally accessed by a footpath across a field, today this path has been upgraded to a drive-way from the road, directly opposite Ford Lane. Although quiet now with only one or two cottages as company, it was not always so. Close by there are a series of humps and bumps in a field which have been interpreted as the site of a medieval manor house, home to the Bohun family, along with other buildings connected by roads.
It appears that it became deserted in the 17th century, possibly due to an outbreak of the Black Death. These were not the only structures nearby that succumbed to the ravages of time. Passing just to the north of the church was the Ford to Portsmouth canal which exited the river Arun a few hundred metres to the north. Gone are the lock gates and the tall building housing the huge pump which fed the canal with water from the river. The Lock Keeper’s Cottage still remains and a slight depression indicating the course of the canal. Some ancient graves in the churchyard are interesting. There are six of them arranged radially with their heads towards the centre, it has been suggested they may date from the pre-Christian era. The church itself is basically Norman being built in the 11th century as a two-cell church with several additions added during later centuries. It is constructed from a mixture of flint and stone with a square bell turret constructed of white painted
During one period of renovation, a series of wall paintings were discovered in various stages of preservation. They included a painting of ‘The Doom’ which can be seen over the Chancel Arch and the ‘Agony in the Garden’ on the South wall. Other points of interest are a carved stone with an interlaced design, c.10th/11th century, positioned over the Vestry doorway and a Harmonium made in Chicago in approximately 1870.
Doom wall painting
When the church fell into dis-repair around 1865, a replacement Font went missing. It was subsequently discovered in a local farmyard and returned after the church was renovated. It was during these renovations that a crude belfry ladder was removed. It consisted of a plank of wood with foot-holes cut through it. This was replaced with a more mundane 35 rung ladder. St Andrews has several items of church silver plate which are kept in Chichester Cathedral. Today Ford is part of the Clymping, Yapton & Ford Benefice and has regular services, albeit not as frequent as the other two churches. Because the Church does not have an electricity supply, these services are carried out under candlelight. Mary Shelley, The Arundel Connection By local historian Mark Phillips If I were to ask local residents to name the first thing that comes to mind when I mention the name Mary Shelley, perhaps many would say that she was the author of the Gothic classic Frankenstein. Others would no doubt mention that she was married to the romantic poet and philosopher, Percy Bysshe Shelley and edited/ promoted his work. Some may even be aware that she was also the author of Mary Shelley The Modern Prometheus, considered by some to be an early example of science fiction. However, I’d wager that few, if any, would say that she stayed for a few months in a cheap lodging house in Tarrant Street, Arundel; but if they did, they would be correct. On August 26, 1827, records note, ‘The Sompting accommodation is to be re-let to tenants who can pay more. MWS (Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley) and Isabel Douglas find cheaper lodgings a few miles away at Arundel on 27th. While they wait for these to become available, they take rooms at the inn in Sompting from 29th.’ The location of the lodging house has been lost to history as records just state that on 3rd September, ‘… MWS’s group (Including Mary’s son, Percy) moves to Mrs Coopers, Tarrant Street, Arundel.’ At this time, it is known that Mary was working on her novel, The Fortunes of Perkin Warbeck: A Romance. (Warbeck was a false pretender to the English throne who claimed to be Richard of Shrewsbury, Duke of York, who was the second son of Edward IV and one of the so-called Princes in the Tower). Some historians believe the subject matter was very possibly prompted by the historic connections of Arundel castle just a couple of minutes’ walk away. There are other documents that confirm Mary was living at Arundel from Autumn 1827, including a letter from Edward John Trelawny (a novelist and adventurer who was a friend of the Shelley’s) to Mary, stating: ‘I have now your letter from Arundel, 9th September. It gives me pleasure to hear your anxieties as to money matters are at an end;
it is one weighty misery off your heart.’ We also have a letter written to Mary from Francis Write (who in 1824 founded the Nashoba settlement in Tennessee as a community where slaves could earn money to buy their liberty) on 15th September saying: ‘On the 28th instant I shall be in London, where I must pass some days with a friend about to sail for Madeira. Then, unless you should come to London, I will seek you at Brighton, Arundel, anywhere you may name.’ On 23rd September a friend, Mary Diana Dods, who lived under the male identity of the diplomat and scholar Walter Sholto Douglas, ostensibly the spouse of Isabella Robinson Douglas, arrived in Arundel to see Mary. Dods, likely to have been in the guise of Walter, persuaded Mary to assist her in obtaining passports for herself and her lover Isabella. This would enable the couple to travel to Paris under the identities of Mr and Mrs Douglas and start a new life together. Since ‘Mr and Mrs Douglas’ were unable to be present in person, Mary enlisted the help of her friend, American author John Howard Payne, in gaining passports for the couple, though she did not tell him exactly what she was doing. With the aid of forged signatures and very likely, actors impersonating the couple, Payne succeeds in obtaining the passports. Although Mary Shelley only lived a few short months in Arundel, I feel this would be worthy of a blue plaque being installed at the site. However, even with the assistance of Arundel genealogist, Isabel Beeton, we were only able to establish that the property was next door to an inn on Tarrant Street. With the known inns along Tarrant Street during this time, the best we could manage was to narrow this down to nine potential locations, but our research will continue. ‘You will rejoice to hear that no disaster has accompanied the commencement of an enterprise which you have regarded with such evil forebodings.’ - the first line from Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein.

Big Church Day Out A big deal at the Wiston Estate by editor Kris Thomas
35-40,000 visitors Many events are making a welcome come back this summer and Big Church Day Out (BCDO) is one of them. Ticket holders who were unable to come in 2020 due to Covid-19 have rolled over their tickets and these, combined with new ticket sales, mean that the 2022 event is on track to host 35-40,000 visitors this month. History
The idea for a Christian orientated music festival was conceived in 2009 after a meeting between Tim Jupp and the Goring family of Wiston estate. Tim Jupp was a founding member of contemporary English Christian band Delirious? (the question mark is part of the name). Originating from Littlehampton, the band had a successful career between 1992 and 2009 playing in over forty countries and in the UK at venues such as Wembley Stadium, Hyde Park and the o2 Arena, as well as on the main stage at Glastonbury in 1999. Tim’s idea with BCDO was to hold an event to serve the churches in the area but to also welcome non-religious people who were looking to experience a friendly and safe
local music festival. Big Church Day Out was the first ever event to be held on the Wiston estate and 13,000 people attended the first one. Tim explained that all did not run smoothly that first year! “It was incredibly hot and we had some serious traffic problems. Food vans didn’t turn up, there wasn’t enough drinking water nor enough team members...The bravest thing we did was to carry on and do the 2nd year.”
Since that challenging first year, the team have developed the infrastructure including building tracks to make the estate suitable for other large-scale events such as the popular Steam Rally and the many other events that Wiston now hosts. The festival was extended from one day to three days in 2010 and the number of attendees went up to 25,000. What’s it all about? Primarily it’s a summer music festival - not quite on the scale of Glastonbury but it’s grown year on year. Tim elaborates; “There are 6 music stages and it’s all sorts of music - opera, classical, rock and roll, hip hop - all genres. This year there will be 70 different artists over the weekend, the larger names are American as the Christian music industry in America is huge. There will be around 70 food vans and lots of

children’s activities - fairground rides, and such. Many are free. We have a team of 20 working for the event all year, but more than 3,000 team will be on site during the event who are responsible for looking after up to 40,000 people including approximately 700 caravans and 8,000 cars. It’s exciting and challenging and takes a full month to set up. We thought, go large or go home! Every Christian denomination is welcome as are the non-religious. The name reflects the fact that it’s inclusive - a space for all churches to come together and gather for a weekend”. About half of the attendees (over 15,000 people) will be camping at Wiston which is at an additional cost to the festival itself. The 2022 event spans 4 days from Thursday 2nd to Sunday 5th June. Campers can arrive from Thursday and stay through to Sunday morning. The acts take place on the Friday and Saturday. This year the event is on the same weekend as the Queen's Platinum Jubilee. Tim; “There will royal fancy dress, jubilee songs and we will be streaming live TV events plus there will be a service for the queen in the Wiston chapel. Jubilee beacons will be lit across the South Downs and one will

The event industry is recovering and everything costs more now. When we went on sale with the ‘22 tickets, there were still Covid restrictions in place - it felt risky and it’s a big relief that things are back to normal now. Rain is a bigger problem!” Costs / Fundraising BCDO 2020 was cancelled just eight weeks before the event was due to take place and many of the costs were unrecoverable. BCDO doesn’t make a profit and in fact will need donations to make up the shortfall from this year’s event. 120 different charities are involved and sponsor the various activities, raising their own profiles at the same time. BCDO itself is an independent charity with an annual budget in excess of £2.5 million. They raise around 90% of this through their main activities - sponsorship, ticket sales etc but have to fundraise for the remaining 10%, around £250,000. An important part of the festival weekend is fundraising on behalf of the BCDO partner charity, Tearfund. Tearfund is a Christian charity that works with churches in more than 50 of the world’s poorest countries.

I asked Tim if he had plans to launch another Big Church Day Out somewhere else. “No, we don’t have any expansion plans. We did take it up north for a couple of years but the southern one has become so well known and there’s still room to grow at Wiston. Our aim is to support the local area, it brings in business to shops, hotels, pubs. The event helps support the local economy and we also raise a lot of money usually for international development work via Tearfund. 3rd & 4th June 2022 www.bigchurchdayout.com

In Your Garden
Monthly gardening ideas & tasks by Andrew Staib of Glorious Gardens
Bringing height in to your garden Introducing new trees into a garden can fill people with trepidation. The wrong tree can outgrow its space, cast shade, or it can drop unwanted leaves. Its roots can undermine houses or it fails to survive due to soil or wind conditions. This article will help you choose the right tree for the right place. Given that most of our gardens are on the small to medium size I will concentrate on trees from 2 to 5 metres in height Photinia Trees must be chosen carefully. A well positioned tree with a delicate and spacious leaf and branch character can create a canopy that will give your garden a sense of height, enclosure, intimacy and privacy without dominating the garden. Proportion Choosing more than one new tree in your garden can give your garden a more glade like effect. They can soften the effect of neighbour’s houses and overlooking windows and actually make the garden feel bigger as a canopy immediately stimulates our memories of the countryside and different landscapes we have visited. If your garden is quite bare, planting trees normally means selecting more than one so that the ‘weight’ and ‘volume’ of them will balance each other. However if you have a large tree next door, you can factor this in as your own, and therefore all you need to do is balance this neighbour’s tree with one or two of your own. Evergreen Trees Small evergreen trees The more robust the evergreen presence you want, say for privacy, the more dense the leaf canopy needs to be. This can have the advantage of being perfect for screening but they will still cast shade and if you grown them near a fence careful that over time they won’t also block out your neighbours view or light. Also they
will want to protrude outwards as well as grow upwards so this has to be factored in. For a denser canopy of leaves, these are some of my favourites: Arbutus Uendo, Magnolia Little Gem, Ligustrum excelcium, Loquat and Photinia. Photinia is a common tree, normally kept as a hedge, but still a high performer with its electric red leaves. If you have acid soils you can go for the Rhododendrons and Camellias. More delicate evergreens are Olives, Pittisporum ‘Silver Queen’ and Viburnum tinus whilst Ceanothus can form an ‘umbrella’ like shape over a bed or path. Delicate small trees that lose their leaves Don’t forget you relax in your garden mainly in the warmer months so think hard before you buy an evergreen. They are less generous to wildlife normally, and will you really be needing their shade, privacy or dense green backdrop over the Winter months? For a more open canopy that lets dappled light through, you could think of Amelenchier lamarki, Weeping Birch, Weeping Cherry, Malus Red Sentinal, Sorbus Pink Pagoda (or the smaller Sorbus pseudovilmorinii), Cercis Forest Pansey (or the smaller green leaved Cercis Avondale). Albezia is a heavenly tree though it needs a lot of sun and a sheltered position.

There is also Prunus amanogawa, Hamamelis and the perfectly formed, classic of all small trees, the Japanese Acers. The only trouble with these is they like to be the centre of attention and need a lot of neutral space around them. Laburnum Golden Showers, is a tree that has gone out of fashion but after the yellow display of flowers in Spring has a very interesting branch structure. Prunus Hally Jolvette is worth considering as it has a well behaved rounded canopy and only gets to 5 metres in height. Also think about Acer griseum (The Paperbark Tree), Salix exiguta and the two small Magnolias, ‘India Magic’ and ‘ Laura’. For wildlife try the Hawthorn ‘Prunifolia’. The Salix is a great bad haircut looking tree and suits filling up a space in the very back of a garden or next to a large pond. All of these trees will give your garden a lovely sense of breadth and depth without a tree surgeon being called in every year. Also the vertical fruit trees like Malus ‘Adirondack’ and Malus Ballerina can be tucked away in a bed and nicely contrast any weeping trees you might have. Unusual Trees For more unusual trees you could try Rhus lacinata (though it will sucker with its roots over
Japanese Acer
the years) You could also think of Euonymous Red Cascade, Liquidamber ‘Gum Ball’ or the majestic, if slow growing, Cornus cousa ‘Miss Satori’. The ‘Gum Ball’ only gets to 2.5m and as you can imagine the autumn colours alone make it worth growing. Acacia pravissima is another interesting tree with an open canopy, especially if you are considering a Mediterranean style garden.

have a look at Hamamelis × intermedia ‘Jelena’. • For a tropical look, try Catalpa bignonioides ‘nana’. • For a small tree Hamamelis × intermedia ‘Jelena’ with amazing purple leaves and rich dark purple berries look up Malus toringo ‘Scarlett’. Turning wasted space into a working place By Nick Roberts RMR Group The post pandemic world has arrived. It’s a more hygienic world. A world of new perspectives and habits. And for many of us, this new world has created permanent new lifestyles; working from home – once abused and frowned upon – now covers a large percentage of the population. The catch being a lack of suitable space to operate efficiently at home. By now, many will have refined their working home routines to mitigate against kids bursting in demanding for their Rice Krispies, but that doesn’t mean the situation can’t be improved. Working from home is more than just setting up a desk and asking everyone to be quiet. This is reflected in the huge spike of converting outbuildings and building entirely new ones in the garden. The environment we work in affects our day-to-day performance so having the right space can compound into a massive improvement over the course of 12 months. Luckily, the process of converting outbuildings is usually straight forward. It’s even a pretty simple

process when building one from scratch. However, there are some important factors you need to consider; most notably planning permission. In most cases, these projects fall under ‘permitted development’ so you don’t need formal planning permission. The mistakes arise when you assume that's the case based on your own calculations, especially if your home is listed or under a conservation area. This is when some friendly, professional advice comes in handy! But, as we all know, it’s not all about size! With garden offices, location is important too. So, if you’re looking to overcome your Zoombarrassment, converting an outbuilding or building a garden office could be the way the go. Aptera’s futurist “never charge” solar EV By Nadia Goldsmith California start-up Aptera Motors are the creators of the world’s first “never charge” solar electric vehicle. In 2020 Aptera unveiled their futurist-looking three-wheel design with a built-in solar array. Integrating 700 watts worth of solar cells and providing 70-kilometres of driving range each day from the sun alone and up to 1,600 kilometres from its lithium-ion battery (top of the range model variant) the Aptera electric vehicle is undoubtedly in the EV spotlight. “With Aptera’s Never Charge technology, you are driven by the power of the sun,” says co-founder Chris Anthony. “Our built-in solar array keeps your battery pack topped off and anywhere you want to go, you just go”. It is no secret that Aptera Motors are leading impressive innovation in the EV vehicle market. Their streamlined, three-wheel, pod-like designs are lightweight and deliver improved aerodynamics with a drag co-efficient of just 0.13. The electric vehicle is capable of acceleration from

Arundel C of E Primary School Showing love to all, tree planting & helping Ukraine Showing love to all Isis in Year 3 is one of the most caring and loving children I have ever met. She is a joy and is very conscientious and recently made a lovely cake for all the staff to share at the end of term. When I spoke about this, she explained she had made it for many reasons, but fundamentally she had made it for all the staff to help them get through the last days of the Easter term. Covid-19 Tree Planting It was lovely to see our children involved in the Tree Planting ceremony to mark the historic efforts by the people of Arundel during the height of the pandemic. The Town Council allowed our children to have a significant part in this. This included writing and reading prayers and a poem about the significant events around the pandemic.
Amber’s art and helping Ukraine I want to share a picture that Amber in Year 3 completed via an Art Enthusiast art webinar. Everyone who knows Amber will know she is a real delight and a fabulous artist. Two of the teachers are professional artists who are Ukrainian and living in the UK. They set up a few webinar’s, and people were asked to donate what they could afford with 100% of the donations going to Ukrainian Families in need. The image was based on the recent latest addition in Paris by famous street mural artist ‘Seth the Globepainter’, at the start of the invasion in Ukraine. He had messaged “For my Ukrainian friends “. Well done to Amber for making a difference through using her fabulous art skills. www.arundelchurchofenglandschool.org.uk

Solar Panels - are they worth it? Investing in your home for renewable energy by Helen Say Solar panels as an alternate source of energy To help hit “Net Zero by 2050”, the UK Government announced a gas boiler ban in 2019. By 2025 no new houses can have one and by 2035, the UK will phase out their installation altogether. This caused a stir in the energy industry (this was before the current turmoil of world events putting pressure on energy prices) and many are looking for alternate energy to heat their homes. One option is solar energy. Money Saving Expert says installing solar panels on an average home costs around £5K, and the impact on energy bills depends on various aspects of your home. Energy Saving Trust estimates a typical household with a 3.5 kilowattpeak system can save between £170 - £440 per year on energy bills. You can be paid for solar energy you “export” to the national energy grid with the 1 Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) scheme.
Is the UK weather beneficial for solar energy? Despite the UK’s grey and gloomy reputation, it has enough sunlight to power solar panels and gets the same level of solar energy as areas in France/Spain. It's about daylight, not hours of sunshine or temperature. Solar panels use light to produce electricity, not heat. Though they obviously produce more power in a sunny day, they still produce a considerable amount of energy when it’s cloudy. Wind and snow aren’t necessarily bad. Wind can be a cooling mechanism for domestic solar panels and make them more efficient. A light flurry of snow will melt with the panel’s residue heat, although heavy snowfall will need to be brushed away as it’ll prevent the panel working to its full potential. If you’re considering switching to renewable energy, solar panels are worth further investigation. Find out more about the SEG scheme from the www.gov.uk website, and Energy Savings Trust has a comprehensive guide for solar energy via: energysavingtrust.org.uk/advice/solar-panels Helen Say is a freelance copywriter/blogger.

Classic Coronation Chicken Salad A quick, easy and healthy meal
The original recipe was created by Constance Spry for Queen Elizabeth’s Coronation in 1953. It was a very quick and easy way of turning a cooked chicken into an interesting salad but sadly was often adulterated and had many odd ingredients added. Here is a light and simple version more like the original. Ingredients - Serves 4 Prep time: 30-40mins • 1 poached or slow roasted 1.5kg chicken • 1tbsp mild curry paste or powder • 4tbsp good mayonnaise • 1tsp lemon juice • 6 very ripe apricots, or apricots canned in fruit juice • 1/2 pint whipping cream • Salt and black pepper • Fresh salad leaves – rocket, watercress and spinach Method 1. Remove the flesh from the cold chicken in large pieces and place in a large mixing bowl.
2. Blend together the curry paste, mayonnaise and lemon juice. Sieve three of the apricots and blend the fruit puree into the mayonnaise, then fold in the whipped cream and season to taste. 3. Coat the chicken lightly in the sauce and arrange in a serving dish with the rest of the apricots sliced and some of the fresh leaves. Sprinkle with a little curry powder and chill. 242 Health & Wellbeing
Gaining & losing the same weight? By Heather Smith Are you in a cycle of losing and regaining the same pound or two for months at a time?
Over five days, that’s a 2500 calorie deficit. Which will also result in weight loss.
Do you find yourself sticking to your food plan and creating a calorie deficit during the week, and taking a more ‘flexible’ approach at the weekend? Have you ever thought about how easy it is to cancel out your hard-gained calorie deficit – and perhaps even end up in a calorie surplus?
But, if at the weekend you eat more than your body needs to maintain weight, then you’re literally eating (or drinking) away the calorie deficit you’ve created.
The weekend makes up 29% of your week. 48% if you include Friday too. When you look at the numbers like this, it becomes easy to see how much of an impact the more relaxed approach at the weekend can have. Whether you’re counting your intake, or taking the more simple (and for most people, likely just as effective – at least at first) approach of simply making better choices for most meals, then you should be achieving at most a 500 calorie deficit each day. Over seven days, that’s a 3500 calorie deficit. Which will result in weight loss.
The calories add up annoyingly quickly. You could happily eat back a 2500 calorie deficit with a takeaway and a bottle of wine. So, choose when you’re going to eat or drink into your calorie deficit carefully, and in full knowledge. But also remember that no food is ‘good’ or ‘bad’. Nothing should be banned or off limits. We value different foods for different reasons at different times. Just know that going all-out at the weekend to ‘reward’ yourself for sticking to your plan all week might not be helping you get closer to your goal. www.fitbiztraining.co.uk

244 Local History
Celebrate Sussex Day on 16th June! A brief history of the county by local historian Chris Hare Sussex is a county with a proud tradition that dates back some 1,600 years. Unlike other English counties, such as Surrey, Hampshire, or Dorset, Sussex once was a kingdom. Yes, there once was a king of Sussex! This was the land that Saxon migrants made their Chris Hare with the home in the fifth centu- Sussex flag ry. Historians are divided as to how brutal the conquest was: some believing that the native population were slaughtered or forced to flee to the west; while others think there was a great deal of assimilation. No one can be sure, as written records from those times are few and unreliable. What is known is that nearly every place name in Sussex is Saxon in origin. Other counties, for example, Devon and Cornwall, have a good mix of Saxon and pre-Saxon place names, but here in the land of the ‘South Saxons,’ there is very little to remind us of the days of the Roman Empire or of the British tribes that co-existed with it, their history was, at the very least overshadowed by the arrival of the newcomers. The first king of Sussex, according to the AngloSaxon Chronicle, was Aella, who landed on the Sussex coast with his three sons and their families. The old English scribes loved to paint a picture of valiant and ruthless warriors, who, in a series of glorious battles, cowed and killed the natives who resisted them. The truth, though, may be less bloody. It seems likely, that in many instances, existing communities, found common cause with the settlers. Evidence from archaeological sites, like Highdown, north of Goring and Ferring, suggests that the two ethnic groups worked together for a common cause. The last king of Sussex was Aethewalh, who ruled in the mid-seventh century. He made alliance with King Penda of Mercia against their mutual enemy, Wessex. For a time, the alliance proved glorious for Sussex, and its proud king invaded and occupied the Meon Valley and the Isle of Wight. He ruthlessly put to death surviving
princes on Wight, who might threaten his rule. By this time, all the old English kingdoms had been converted to Christianity, all apart from Sussex, which clung to its pagan ways. When Bishop Wilfrid of Ripon arrived on the Sussex coast at Selsey, in 666, the Sussex king ordered his men to attack the bishop and his monks, and they were lucky to escape with their lives. However, 20 years later, fete dealt Sussex a cruel blow: the harvests failed and starvation beckoned. The great Wessex king, Caedwalla, who was a great friend of Bishop Wilfrid, overwhelmed Sussex in a surprise attack, crushing all resistance, and subsumed Sussex into Wessex. Yet, the old instincts died hard, and during the following reign of King Ine, Sussex rose in revolt, led by two men of royal birth, Byrthun in the west and Andhun in the east. It would seem that the idea of an East and a West Sussex dates back to those far off days. The Godwin family, who ruled England with an iron fist in the early eleventh century, had ancestral lands at Bosham. It was one of the Godwins, Harold, who was declared king of England in January 1066, and died, along with all his nobles at the Battle of Hastings, ten months later. The Sussex flag, unlike other county flags I could mention, is not the creation of clever tourist executives, but dates back to medieval times. Sussex knights went into battle with the ‘martlets’ emblem emblazoned on their shields.
Yes, Sussex has been around a long time and may it continue to do so for many years to come. Chris Hare will be leading a guided the Duck Pond Sailors walk around the village of Slindon on Sussex Day, Thursday, 16th June. Local shanty and folk song group, the Duck Pond Sailors, will be singing songs of Sussex, its history, its folklore, and its landscape. The group requested that two allotment sites should be operated with the new allotment site at Church Lane assigned to the new homes when the Strategic Development Location is built out and that the current allotment site remain for existing allotment holders. The Chairman acknowledged the group’s request and reminded the meeting that the allotment move is set out in the Tangmere Neighbourhood Plan which was subject to extensive public consultation and referendum before being made in 2016. Grants - Members considered requests received for grant aid and decided upon them as shown: Tangmere Youth Club - £4,000 was agreed as the
third annual contribution as part of a five-year commitment made to the Youth Club St Andrews Church - £250 was agreed towards the upkeep of the Churchyard of St Andrew's. There are differing views that may be summarised as the legality of Parish Councils making donations to Churches is unclear and untested in case law. Members agreed that in the absence of clarity about law and given low value of grant they would proceed to make a grant. Planning Application - Members considered the planning application below and commented upon it as shown: 22/00516/TCA - Land Adjacent to Tangmere Road and Chestnut Walk Tangmere PO20 2HH Notification of intention to fell 1 no. Populus nigra 'Italica' tree. Tangmere Parish Council would normally object to the felling of an apparently healthy tree and notes that there is no evidence provided to justify why this tree should be felled and therefore defers to the expertise of the tree officer. www.tangmere-pc.gov.uk

Walberton Parish Council Planning applications, A27, speed indicator device & cycle path Extracts from the minutes of the Planning Committee meeting, 12th April 2022. Several planning applications were considered. Support was given to improved disabled access to a property in Barnham Lane, the construction of new glasshouses at Lower Farm, Yapton Lane and the variation in plans for Fleurie, Lake Lane. The proposal for double-yellow lines on Arundel Road opposite the petrol station will be supported; options for further control of inappropriate parking in the area were discussed. WPC will be represented at the appeal hearing against the refusal of permission for building on the land west of Tye Lane to reaffirm our objection. Concerns were expressed regarding the suitability of the lighting proposals for the GTR site in Fontwell and an objection will be prepared. The lack of progress with enforcement of planning decisions by ADC was noted and a complaint will be submitted. It is reported that this relates to staff shortages at Arun. A letter regarding ADC’s housing supply and inappropriate Government
housing number targets has been written for sending to the Secretary of State. Further legal advice will be taken regarding correspondence with National Highways and Natural England concerning the A27 protected species application. More engagement will be required before the DCO stage. Correspondence confirming maintenance of Yapton Lane access to Avisford Grange regardless of the A27 outcome was noted; the developer has indicated they will not pursue Tye Lane access at this time. WPC has a further meeting with NH scheduled. The sockets for the Speed Indicator Device have been arranged; the SID will be ordered when installation is complete. When discussing the cycle path link between Fontwell Meadows and Walberton Green with WSCC the missing section between Denmans Lane and Level Mare Lane along the A27 will be raised. www.walberton-pc.go’v.uk
