A View from the Bridge

Chichester Festival Theatre Fri 6 - Sat 28th October

On the Brooklyn waterfront, where the fierce passions of ancestral Sicily linger, the orphaned Catherine falls for her handsome, newly arrived cousin Rodolfo – an illegal immigrant. Their romance is encouraged by her aunt Beatrice but viewed with revulsion by her uncle, Eddie Carbone, who harbours an unspoken desire. As tensions rise, their story spins inexorably beyondcontrol.

MP for Arundel & South Downs, September update

Railway ticket office closures

I know that many in our community rely on the railways, myself included as a regular commuter to Westminster. The rail industry is currently consulting on the closure of ticket offices and instead deploying the staff out onto platforms to help customers – including at Arundel, Pulborough, Hassocks, Barnham, Angmering, Petersfield and Haslemere stations. Making sure the most vulnerable can still receive the assistance they need and that our questions at stations can

be answered is absolutely key. I submitted a response to the industry’s consultation, and I look forward to the conclusions of the call for views.

Planning reform

I know that for many local residents, unsustainable development on the green places that surround our villages and small towns is a significant concern. For that reason, I am pleased that last week we received positive news on planning reform that will prevent unsustainable housebuilding whilst still delivering the affordable homes that future generations need.

The key measures that the Government announced were a shift to focus on building in urban centres, to brownfield development and to protect green spaces. It means development will be focussed on cities such as London, Cambridge and Manchester and see them grow upwards rather than outwards – something that I advocated in my very first speech in Parliament. The Ourstory Archive at The Keep in Brighton shows how the UK's most popular international Pride Festival began as a small annual march against Section 28. Sometimes called Clause 28, this was the Conservative’s government’s response to the LGBTQ+ community’s demands for equality in the late 80s. Becoming law in 1988, it banned the ‘promotion’ of homosexuality by local authorities. The LGBTQ+ people of Brighton fought back, forming ‘Brighton Area Action Against Clause 28’ or BAAAC28.

The strength of the LGBTQ+ community in Brighton today has its origins, in part, in the activism and the endurance of BAAAC28. Labour repealed the law in 2003. www.thekeep.info.

Mini meadow for Yapton school

At the end of last summer term, some students at Yapton C. of E. Primary School got hands on with nature, creating a new mini meadow of wildflowers in their grounds with help from local housebuilder, David Wilson Homes. The housebuilder donated 30 build-your-own seed bomb kits to the school to aid the activity.

David Wilson Southern Counties, who is building its Ryebank Gate development on Drove Lane, also organised for its Design Manager, Roger White, to visit the school to deliver a talk on outdoor sustainability and the importance of nurturing local eco-systems. The children learnt about the role of wildflower meadows as well as bee boxes and hedgehog highways that the housebuilder has implemented at Ryebank Gate to encourage local wildlife populations to grow.

Painted lady migration patterns and other migratory insects:

Every year, Southern England becomes the stage for a remarkable sight when 3.5 trillion flying insects, equalling the weight of 20,000 reindeer, migrate across the country! Among these in-sects are the Painted Lady butterflies, the subject of a recent discovery among scientists and butterfly enthusiasts.

The Painted Lady butterfly (Vanessa cardui) has a 4-7.3cm wingspan and often populates dry open areas. Every spring they journey from their overwintering grounds in North Africa and the Mediterranean region to the UK, Asia and Northern Europe. These butterflies obtain average altitudes of 500m, can reach 30mph in favourable conditions, and can do a 9000-mile round trip from Africa to the Arctic Circle! For many years it was a mystery where Painted Lady butterflies went in the autumn, whether they died in the UK or made a return journey, as they fly at such a high altitude and could not be seen by butterfly observers. It was recently discovered that the Painted Lady butterflies do make a return journey in autumn, returning to favourable temperatures further South.

These butterflies are unique due to their migration being the longest-ever recorded flight for butterflies. These migrations can take generations, as they lay their eggs in the UK, and the offspring continue the migration South to southern Europe and North Africa, although not all participate, and some may not survive the harsh UK winters. As they undertake continuous, year-round mating, painted ladies are able to stop, breed and die at locations along the migration route.

How do they know when to start the migration?

The caterpillars of Painted Ladies grow while the days are lengthening, to then fly northwards, and when the days shorten the butterflies know to travel south to warmer climates.

Painted Ladies are the only butterflies found in Iceland and since the 1970’s their population has increased by 32%! In the UK they feed on, amongst other plants, Teasels, Ivy, Ragwort, Heather and Hawkweed.

Although the migration of Painted Lady butterflies is one of a kind, other migratory insects are worth keeping an eye out for.

Sometimes we experience mass migrations of insects in summer and autumn. Between 10 and 25 billion medium and large insects move back and forth out of regions in Britain. This includes hoverflies for example, where 4 billion come to and from Britain each year, and they are essential for pollination and natural pest control.

Mass migrations truly can be a shocking sight, for example in World War 2, military observers reported a ‘golden ball’ drifting over the channel and thought it was poison gas, only for it to be migrating Clouded Yellow butterflies.

Painted lady butterfly

We also host other insects on their migratory journeys, such as the Red Admiral. This butterfly is extremely common in spring and throughout summer too, usually spotted near flowers such as Buddleia. They make their journey from North Africa and continental Europe, arriving in the UK in Spring. They lay their eggs in the UK, meaning new butterflies are around from July onwards.

We also host Hummingbird Hawkmoths in Spring, which usually live in Central Asia and in the Mediterranean region. They are named for their similarity to hummingbirds, feeding on nectar using their long beaks. Hummingbird Hawkmoths have very good memories, and often return to the same flowerbeds every day at the same time. They breed in the UK, and due to their inability to survive the winter they make return migrations in Autumn.

If you are lucky enough, you might be able to spot a Monarch Butterfly which makes occasional, sporadic appearances in the UK. It is believed that strong winds may carry individual Monarch butterflies across the Atlantic Ocean

into the UK. They’re native to the US and can fly up to 100 miles per day. Migratory insects that visit the UK undertake incredible journeys driven by instinct and environmental cues, playing an important role in pollination, pest control,

Loft conversions with a view

Raising the roof by Nick Roberts RMR Group

Velux balconies

Who needs a garden when you can have a balcony in the sky? Velux balconies – the relatively unknown diamond loft conversions - make this fantasy a reality.

This architectural marvel doesn't just provide an extra room. It promises sunrises with your morning coffee and sunsets with a chilled glass of wine, all from the comfort of your own home. Velux balconies are not just an upgrade to your home, they're an upgrade to your lifestyle.

A room with a view

Transforming your loft into a balcony might seem like reaching for the stars, but the sky is not the limit - it’s just the view. Yes, we're quite literally suggesting a room with a view, and perhaps even a few starlit dinners. Remember those spaceships you imagined as a child? Well, this is your launchpad. That's the power of creative construction. It's about seeing not just what's there, but what could be there.

So, as you sit with your morning cuppa and glance towards the ceiling, let your imagination soar. After all, as the saying goes, the best view comes after the hardest climb – or in this case, after a phone call to your local architect and construction company! robertsmillerredshaw.com

Financial advice for later life

Over the course of our lives, changing circumstances govern our financial requirements from bringing up a family, dealing with debt or providing for retirement or later life care. Some people are fortunate in being able to make suitable provision for the future whilst for many of us, retirement suddenly looms and we begin to wonder whether we will be able to sustain our present way of life.

For the over 55 homeowner, Equity Release is widely advertised as the way to enhance income, pay off a mortgage or other debts, provide help for family members or indulge in holidays or luxury purchases. Adrian Foulks of Advice for Later Life is an independent adviser specialising in financial issues for older people and he spoke to Sussex Local about the importance of close contact with clients when dealing with such matters. As each individual's circumstances and needs vary considerably, he said, it is essential that sufficient time is taken to fully explain the workings of equity release and to listen and respond

to the client's questions which are likely to be many.

Equity release is a big financial step and should not be entered into without thorough consideration. To this end, Adrian told us, a free no-obligation initial consultation is available when equity release or alternative options are discussed in detail and a ‘Key Facts Illustration’ is provided for the client. Clients are encouraged to take their time and Adrian will keep in touch to ensure that circumstances have not changed.

If you or a family member are considering equity release, make sure that you seek independent advice.

Unlock the value of your home and enjoy the retirement you’ve always dreamed of

As a homeowner, your property is probably your biggest asset, but have you ever considered releasing some of the tax-free cash tied up in it? Best of all, you can use the cash lump sum however you wish.

If you’re a UK homeowner aged 55 or over, with a property value of at least £70,000, then a lifetime mortgage could be right for you.

Table Talk Foundation

Creating a healthier future through food education

In the UK, Obesity accounts for over 30,000 deaths each year with obesity levels having more than doubled over the last decade. Today, one in three children leave primary school overweight or obese and children in deprived areas are more than twice as likely to be obese as their more privileged peers.

Sussex based charity, Table Talk Foundation has a two-pronged mission – namely to deliver high quality food education and provide children with an insight into the hospitality industry, and to also provide mental and physical health support and financial assistance to the local hospitality industry.

The charity’s co-founder, Jessica Aggarwal, (inset picture right) says, “We believe this health crisis requires immediate intervention. We exist to create a healthier future by helping young people build better relationships with food through innovative and fun food education.”

The charity is also keen to provide support for the hospitality industry, which was hard-hit by the COVID-19 pandemic and has continued to suffer from the increased cost of living crisis, rising operational costs, staff shortages and from meeting demands for increased sustainability arising from environmental concerns and climate change. “The hospitality industry is the UK’s third largest industry for employment and yet hospitality faced a staggering loss of £115 billon and over 660,000 jobs during the COVID19 pandemic. Hospitality businesses are three times more likely to fail compared to other UK businesses.” Jessica goes onto say that the charity believes that the hospitality industry plays a vital role in society. “We’re transforming the hospitality industry with a strong focus on mental wellbeing, physical health and financial support. We want to encourage more young people into careers in hospitality and support them every step of the way.”

All funds are spent directly in Sussex

The work of the Foundations is funded by a mix of grants, sponsorship and Industry Partnerships. Jessica expands on the roles each play in supporting the Foundation. “We have been fortunate enough to receive generous grants from several trusts and foundations committed to creating positive change. These include The

Band Trust, Enjoolata Foundation, Fonthill Foundation, Focus Foundation and The Lawson Trust. “Through the kindness and dedication of local people and businesses who’ve sponsored local schools, we've managed to raise over £20,000. These sponsorships not only provide vital funds but also help foster a sense of community around our mission.” Additionally, the charity is, Jessica says, “Proud to collaborate with hospitality businesses that have found creative ways to raise money through customer donations. Initiatives – like adding one pound to a bill or featuring a “Cocktail of the week” – have collectively raised over £43,000. The dedication of our Industry Partners exemplifies the spirit of the hospitality industry.”

Table Talk Business Club – offering monthly events in the best independent hospitality venues in Sussex

Table Talk Foundation also has a sister organisation and Community Interest Company: “Table Talk Business Club, has been instrumental in our fundraising efforts,” and is an exclusive club for executive-level owners and key decisionmakers holding monthly events at “The best independent hospitality venues in Sussex. These events not only raise awareness of our mission but also generate vital funds to support our ongoing work.”

Founded in 2021, the charity has grown extremely quickly - from a Summer Party thrown to launch its mission to a Festive Feast in December –raising £60,000 in its first year. In 2022, the organisation hosted “nine inspiring fundraising events, raising over £40,000 – generating awareness and excitement for the Foundation and

our mission,” and March this year saw Sussex Showcase 2023 raise £22,500 for table Talk Foundation over seven days, “Fourteen chefs with twelve Michelin stars, two Great British Menu Winners and one Masterchef: The Professionals winner amongst them, collaborated to bring guests a one-of-a-kind food experience, in the most exciting restaurants Sussex has to offer.” Future events include a Christmas Party in December andSussex Showcase in March 2024. The charity is staffed by a combination of a small number of paid staff and volunteers – trustees as well as ad hoc volunteers who fundraise and help out at events - and is, Jessica tells me, now at capacity with current staffing levels. In 2024, the aim is to recruit another chef to grow the team and meet increasing demand.

“All this growth requires more funding so our main challenge will be to bring in more donations and partnerships to ensure we can keep moving forwards.”

Ensuring the generosity of the local people is put directly back into the immediate community. When I ask how much support the charity receives from the local community, Jessica is emphatic. ”A lot! Our School Sponsorship, Industry

Partnerships and Table Talk Business Club members are predominantly Sussex based. Those attending our events and bidding at fundraising auctions are also mostly from Sussex. We believe in creating an ecosystem whereby the generosity of the local people is put directly back into the immediate community.”

The foundation also works with the Royal Academy of Culinary Arts’ Adopt a School Trust, which brings chefs and hospitality professionals into primary schools, helping children develop healthy eating habits, enthusiasm, interest in food and learn about the hospitality industry. to the Trust which sponsors the Foundation’s full-time Sussex-based chef and delivers food education across the Sussex region.

“I learnt so much and had such a fun time – this was the best day of school ever!” Brodie, aged 11 Table Talk Foundation has delivered food education to more than 30 schools and holiday clubs, helping over 1,200 children make informed choices and eat better, teaching skills and knowledge that will foster healthy choices throughout children’s lives. In 2022-2023 the Foundation, in partnership with Adopt a School Trust, raised £200,000 to build a bespoke training kitchen at Plumpton college. From where they can offer Chef on a Farm sessions that give children a hands-on farm-to fork experience. Jessica says, “Sessions started in May and we’ve been overwhelmed with positive feedback.”

“It was wonderful to see the children using the skills Chef John had taught them in a real kitchen. Being able to create their own lunch from scratch would have been the first time most of them would have experienced anything like it.”Primary School Deputy Head Teacher.

This year also saw the Foundation launch its Hospitality Training Programme, featuring eight

sessions and networking lunches. Entirely funded by charity fundraising, the programme is designed to develop critical skills, knowledge and industry connections to hospitality professionals in Sussex. Jessica says that feedback has been positive – with one hundred percent showing “an improved confidence rating in their ability to open safe conversations around mental health and to signpost appropriately.”

“I will be recommending that members of my management team attend future sessions.” –

Table Talk Foundations believes that, “By defending the health of individual children and fighting for industry sustainability, we’re investing in a healthier, more prosperous society. A society that celebrates fresh, whole foods, the joy of cooking, cooking from scratch and a hospitality industry that serves its community and looks after the wellbeing of its employees.”

Peace Celebrations & Dinner - 1919

This month I am indebted to several well-known figures from Yapton’s past whose foresight has provided me with the material to write this account of the village Peace Celebrations. Out of a combined population of 850, 153 men left Yapton and Ford to fight in the Great War, 31 did not return. But what of the men that fought and did return.

Researches show that the number of men from Yapton, per head of population, who went to war was one of the highest in the country.

Celebration Records

A few months after cessation of the hostilities, a committee, under the Chairmanship of Revd. Whatley of the Chapel, was formed in the village to organise a Peace Dinner for the returning service men. This committee included Mr. McCoombes, a local builder, who kept the accounts for the celebration. This he did meticulously to such an extent that he kept all the invoices, receipts and dockets which he passed down to his grandson, James Diggance, well known in the village as a member of the Postmaster family. James (Jim) allowed schoolmaster and local historian, Dennis Vardy, to photocopy and publish them in his series of Yapton Chronicles. It is this account that I have used as the basis of this article.

The celebrations were planned in two parts. Firstly, at the end of July, a village ‘Gala’ was arranged to take place, possibly in the field behind Bonham’s Farmhouse. The organisers used local shops and suppliers where possible. Bread, for example was supplied by Wm. Bartley of Berea Court Bakery, now ‘The Old Bakery’ in Church Road.

His bill for 70 Gallons of bread and 500 rolls was £3-3s-4d. where a gallon of bread was made from a gallon of flour and weighed 8 pounds, 11 ounces (approximately 3.94 kgs.). Another shop, Collins, in Church Road was the source of Night Light Candles as well as butter, sugar and sweets. Milk was purchased from Mr. W. Baker’s Dairy, behind the Shoulder of Mutton pub, and from Sparks Dairy attached to Church Farm. George Chandler’s shop, Bilsham Stores, was not left out, he also supplied sweets as well as butter and tea. Even more sweets, 500 bags, came from the old Post Office which was owned by the Diggance family.

Fireworks

The finale of the evening was supposed to have been a grand firework display. The fireworks costing £5 were purchased from Henry Smart’s shop in Arundel and stored in a Shepherd’s Hut behind the Black Dog pub. Sadly, local youths broke in, stole the fireworks and set them all off. To save the day and because of the time factor, replacements were ordered directly from Brock’s Fireworks of Crystal Palace.

Peace Dinner

The second part of the celebrations was in the form of a ‘Peace Dinner to the Returned Warriors’ held in the Clubroom of the Shoulder of Mutton pub on the 30th October. The meal included Ham, Beef, Mutton and various vegetables followed by a selection of deserts and ending with cheese and biscuits. This sumptuous spread was all washed down with 44 1/2 gallons of beer. They were entertained with a programme of songs sung by local villagers. A fitting thank you for the men who had risked their lives for their homeland.

Fire at the Swallow Brewery

Just before 4pm on Tuesday, August 18, 1863, an article in the Sussex Journal tells us that a ‘… conflagration broke out in Mr Constable’s Swallow brewery, in Queen Street, Arundel, which, for the fierceness with which it raged, and the rapidity with which it caught up and destroyed everything within its reach, has not been equalled anywhere in this neighbourhood for a long time past.’

The Swallow Brewery was a large building located on the south side of the bridge fronting Queen Street. In 1863, the first of two Bridge Hotels stood on the site where Martlets Court is now located.

Next door was Mr Constable’s house, followed by his brewery that ran all the way along just past where today's Co-op ends. Within this row of retail premises one can still see walls and rooflines of the earlier brewery building. Just past the end of the brewery were a row of six cottages (three of which still exist) that finished at Queen’s Lane. Behind the cottage nearest to the town ran a long narrow court containing a terrace of eight or nine rather dilapidated timberframed thatched houses, running from east to west, from Queen Street to Fitzalan Road.

The Swallow Brewery consisted of a series of buildings behind a later single frontage ‘…built chiefly of timber, tarred and thatched with the gables fronting the street, with a somewhat antiquated appearance’. At the time of the fire, the southern part of the building was let to Mr Chat-

At the rear of the brewery was a stable and coach house belonging to Mr Constable; it was a simple spark from the brewery engine chimney falling on this thatched building that created the forthcoming inferno. Although the small flame was spotted, ‘… the men of the brewery attempted to subdue it, but being dry, it quickly spread totally out of their control.’

Just before 4pm the *hue and cry rang out, the alarm raised and the borough fire engine immediately summoned. Shortly after it arrived it was pumping water from the river Arun and hosing down the flames. By this time the fire had taken an uncontrollable hold on the coach house and spread to the southern end of the brewery building.

Suddenly and without warning there was a huge bang and the flames shot over three adjacent thatched roofs with such speed, it quickly became obvious that the engine was having no effect in suppressing the fire. The firemen had to reluctantly accept that the southern end of the brewery, along with Mr Chatfield’s wheelwright’s shop, could not be saved.

The heat and smoke were so intense at this point that the men struggled to manage the engine and took to covering their heads and faces with jackets and aprons wetted from the hose.

It was decided to move the engine along to the cottages at the south end of the premises ‘… towards which the flames were rapidly proceeding’. Many of the residents and owners of the properties stood across the road in silent horror, watching the terrible devastation and wondering what, if anything, would be left.

*Hue and Cry - To warn/request assistance from others by shouting loudly. This was previously a legal requirement to warn others of criminals and danger. This ceased to be law in the early 1800s but many towns retained the custom as it was very effective. Part II to follow next month.

Feel like you’re failing with your goals?

It’s hard to make changes consistently

In fact, most people I meet have a pretty good idea of what they need to do in order to reach their health and fitness goals, but struggle to put things into action.

Set yourself up to win!

When you feel stuck and as if changes just won’t stick, set yourself up to win.

Pick one thing you can do today which is so easy that it would be ridiculous not to do it.

Make yourself do whatever it is today, whether you feel like it or not. Then, count it as a win.

Maybe tomorrow you’ll feel like you can do a little more – or perhaps you feel you’re better to do the same thing again for a

few days before you add on any more. There’s no right answer. Setting things up so you win often is a great way to give yourself some positive experience with your goals.

When you win, you want to win again

Your goal becomes something you can successfully take steps towards, and not an unsurmountable task – and that makes the mental portion easier.

Never underestimate the power of taking small steps consistently. Things don’t have to be perfect for you to be winning.

Nutrition for children

Helping youngsters to make good food choices

Childhood is a particularly important period for forming positive behaviours related to nutrition. Children who learn and practise positive eating habits from an early age are likely to make healthy choices when they grow up. Here we explore some ways to help promote positive eating behaviours: stick to regular meal and snack times.

• A regular eating pattern that forms the basis of a healthy, balanced diet

• Providing three meals, and two or three snacks a day is ideal for children

• Keeping mealtimes regular creates predictability and encourages a healthy appetite

• Set a good example

In the long term, children and young adults are more likely to learn from how we behave rather than what we tell them. The more we can be a role model about healthy eating habits the better! Set an example to your child by showing them how you make healthy choices and how you practice positive eating habits; this could be

something as simple as choosing to eat a wide variety of foods, or by ensuring you drink plenty of water. Also, family mealtimes offer an excellent opportunity to teach children good eating patterns as well as a time to connect and talk to each other.

Children love to get involved in new things, so why not get them to help in the kitchen? Cooking with kids and getting them involved in the meal preparation process may encourage them to try new healthy foods. Small children could be responsible for setting the table, any mixing or stirring and washing fruit and vegetables. Older children could get involved with preparing the shopping list, chopping, and peeling! For more information and tips including healthy recipes, visit www.heartresearch.org.uk

Marwell zoo visit, PE award, singing festival & leavers service

Rainbow Class visit Marwell Zoo

Our boys and girls had a wonderful trip to Marwell Zoo. They were blessed with the weather and the children's behaviour was exemplary. Thanks to the staff who organised this and all the wonderful parents who supported this trip.

ACE attains the highest grade you can get!

Well done to all the children, parents and staff who have helped us achieve the highest mark you can get for a National Award. We received the highest score for our Physical Education Provision, which looks at sport and opportunities we provide through competitive and non competitive activities - we attained a Platinum Plus grade for the 3rd time in our history

ACE at the locality singing festival 2023

The children's choir's brilliant performance at TLA not only showcased their musical abilities but also led to fabulous applause and cheers from the attendees. Mr Servant, who led the

choir and was supported by Mrs Stacey, Mrs Stanford and Mrs Simpson, chose a current and edgy song and it was lovely hearing the beautiful solos by Ottilie and Amber.

Year 6 Leavers’ Service

Our Year 6, as always, made us proud with their exemplary behaviour at the Year 6 leavers’ service at Chichester Cathedral. It was so amazing that even the vicar who led the service commented upon and said, basically, ‘I can see with your children's behaviour and attitude and this banner why your school is called ACE’. Thank you to those parents and grandparents who were able to attend this special event.

Amberley C of E Primary School

Hood winked & sports day

As I write this, it is the start of the Summer Holidays and it is a welcome break from all the busyness of school life. The end of the school year was marvellous with many exciting events happening! Hoodwinked!

Amberley's KS2 Production of Hoodwinked was incredible from start to finish. From the staging and costumes, to the jokes and dances, the pupils in years 3, 4, 5 and 6 did a sterling job. What was particularly impressive was that the show ran smoothly, with no (or incredibly little) support from the adults in front of the stag; once the stage lights were up, it was the pupils who shone the brightest. A massive thank you to Mrs Phillips and Mrs Walker for putting the show together and pushing through rehearsals with no stage for a period of time! Thank you also to Mrs Philpot, Miss Kinnane and Mr Armitage for

staying behind the scenes to support the pupils during the two performances.

Sports Day

We were blessed with beautiful weather for Amberley’s annual Sports Day! The children took part in a carousel of multi-skill activities as well as taking part in running races. The house, Dragons, were this year's winners - well done to thembut ALL the children were fantastic participants. It was lovely to see so many parents join us for the afternoon; thank you for coming. A massive thank you goes out to our PE coach, Matt Dingle from 1:1 Football Performance Coaching, for organising the whole event.

Roundup from the summer term

Southern Rail Trip for Year 6

The children in year 6 had the opportunity to visit Southern Railway at Bognor Regis train station. They learned how to plan a journey and travel safely. This was good preparation for the children, as they begin their transition into secondary school and develop their independence.

Sports Day

St Philip’s had their annual sports day. The sun shone and the children enjoyed moving around the different events. There was an abundance of family support and encouragement for all the children. We had some student helpers from St. Philip Howard who did a great job of supporting each sporting event, the staff and the children. The overall winning house team this year was Brotherton, who held the cup high and did a lap of the track as the school cheered on.

St Philip’s Singing Superstars

Back in June, some of our Singing Superstars attended the ‘Celebration of Song’ at The Littlehampton Academy. They had the opportunity to sing on the stage in front of over 400 people. They sang alongside 6 other schools and performed to their parents. Finally, the children combined as one big choir at the end to sing a joint song.

Sussex Green Living Workshop Day

One of our Year 6 children, Amara, requested a visit from Sussex Green Living. They came into school and carried out two workshops in each class. They helped to remind us about the important role each of us plays in saving the planet. Their remit was to inspire the younger generation to want to reduce, reuse, refill, repair and recycle.
