Findon Sheep Fair Sep 22

HELLO!

September means the start of autumn - misty mornings, darker evenings and for anyone with children, it’s also the start of the new school year. Good luck to pupils moving up a year and/or to a new school!

Our charity spotlight this month shines on Sussex-based charity, Table Talk Foundation. Obesity accounts for over 30,000 deaths each year and Table Talk help young people build better relationships with food. The charity also provides mental and physical health support and financial assistance to the local hospitality industry.

If life feels hectic, just think what it must have been like in September 1752, when the country lost 11 days. This was when we switched from the Julian calendar which was 365.25 days long. Over the centuries, that quarter day had added up to push the calendar out of step with the seasons. So it was decided to switch to the 365-day Gregorian calendar instead. On changeover day, September 3rd vanished, to be replaced by September 14th –yikes…

Whatever happens this month, at least we’ve got 30 days to play with!

Until next time, Kris & Jeff

A brand new care home in Tarring

Tarring Manor - 75 rooms plus cinema, hair

The increasing age of the population and the issues surrounding senior care are widely discussed. People are living longer and whereas some are fortunate to be able to care for themselves well into old age, others will require specialist nursing and personal care.

Tarring Manor Care Home opens during September and is the latest in a chain of family owned care homes across the country. Karen Grainger, a long time Worthing local, is the Home Manager and has worked at Caring Homes for over ten years. Originally Karen trained as a Registered General Nurse in the Royal Air Force.

Karen spoke to us about Tarring Manor and the care provided. She explained, “The needs of the individual are pivotal and residents are encouraged to be as independent as possible. As well as providing healthcare and person care, extra support is available for those who are able to enjoy days out and local activities. Karen continued, “We believe the best care comes from a genuine interest in people. The care team are

interests, former lives, little quirks and preferences which really helps us to offer a fulfilling and dignified later life experience.”

Community involvement and promoting intergenerational relationships are also supported and local Scouts, Guides and school children, as well as residents’ families of course, are always welcome to visit. Residents of this new 75 bedroom establishment will be able to enjoy facilities such as a cinema, bistro and hair salon with activities including arts and crafts, baking and gardening designed to sustain well-being into the later years. www.caringhomes.org/tarring-manor.

Metamorphosis

New adaption at Worthing Connaught Theatre

Frantic Assembly and Lemn Sissay O.B.E. collaborate on this thrilling new adaptation. Combining the fluidity and lyricism of Lemn Sissay’s adaptation and Frantic’s uncompromising physicality, this promises to be an unmissable retelling of Franz Kafka’s shocking tale of cruelty and kindness; a visceral and vital depiction of humans struggling within a system that crushes them under its heel. wtm.uk/events/metamorphosis

One morning Gregor Samsa awakes to find himself changed. To those around him he is dangerous, untouchable vermin. Worse, he is a burden.

A word said, an action out of place, the opening of old wounds, none of which can be undone. Until now Gregor has woken every morning, quietly left to take the same train, and worked to pay off the family debt. But that world explodes on this morning of brutal metamorphosis.

The Ourstory Archive at The Keep in Brighton shows how the UK's most popular international Pride Festival began as a small annual march against Section 28. Sometimes called Clause 28, this was the Conservative’s government’s response to the LGBTQ+ community’s demands for equality in the late 80s. Becoming law in 1988, it banned the ‘promotion’ of homosexuality by local authorities. The LGBTQ+ people of Brighton fought back, forming ‘Brighton Area Action Against Clause 28’ or BAAAC28. The strength of the LGBTQ+ community in Brighton today has its origins, in part, in the activism and the endurance of BAAAC28. Labour repealed the law in 2003. www.thekeep.info.

Local builder wins armed forces award

Local housebuilder Thakeham has been awarded the highest level of recognition for its support of the armed forces community. Under the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme (ERS), Gold is the highest award for those organisations who pledge, demonstrate and advocate support for, and align their values with, the Armed Forces Covenant. With only 193 recipients of this accolade nationally, Thakeham is the only housebuilder in the South East to achieve this status.

Council sets agenda to modernise procedures

Worthing Borough Council is modernising to encourage younger and less-heard voices to engage with local democracy. The mayor will now chair meetings and events wearing just the mayoral badge and chain, not traditional robes. Councillors will also stop wearing ceremonial robes. The Council wants to make meetings more inclusive and accessible so they can understand and represent young people who may see politicians as out of touch. The Council wants everyone to have a real say in shaping Worthing's future, following last year's launch of The Big Listen, a new community engagement approach on key local issues.

Hotel to house the homeless

Adur & Worthing Councils have voted to provide temporary housing for up to 44 local homeless single residents at Windsor House Hotel, pending planning approval. Critics questioned the grounds for this move, but the councils say this could reduce accommodation costs by £2.5 million over 10 years amid rising demand and limited local options.

All the fun of the (Sheep) Fair

117 years ago by Valerie Martin

I have discovered that the annual Lamb Fair held in July on Nepcote Green was started around 1835 and was locally known as "The Little Fair". I think that the more flattering title of "The Great Fair" was reserved for the autumn event in September when an uninterrupted spiral of caravans and vehicles lined the length of the Green. Brown faced gypsies squatted on the steps of their bright stuffy trailers waiting for their palms to be crossed with silver, whereupon various dark Romany secrets would be instantly revealed.

They dropped off lots here and there at the various waiting farmsteads they passed.

Amusement at the fair came into its own in the evening. The main attraction for anyone who lingered under the glare of the naphtha lamps (I told you about those in the August issue of Sussex Local), was the steam roundabout with the blare of not very melodious music. The lamps occasionally spluttered and underwent a course of disturbance from the pesky night breeze. Pungent fumes pervaded everyone's nostrils.

Bottle smashing was an activity to be indulged. A dozen or so strange looking missiles were arranged in a gallery. A supply of flower pots were angled invitingly from strings. These temptingly appealed to the swift of hand to dislodge them from their swaying perches. The clay pots were reduced to a thousand fragments. For such slight of hand a reward was forthcoming in the shape of a cheap ornament to take home.

In 1906 around 7,000 ewes and other divisions of woolly quadrupeds, had been driven to the Green by shepherds (wearing their traditional smocks) and carrying crooks. Visiting flocks had deposited a trail of droppings the length and breadth of every road. If a garden gate was not firmly shut it was not unusual for valued blooms to be munched as the animals headed for the Green.

The sheep had, in fact, walked from remote corners of the county. They swarmed across the Findon Downs like a sweeping white cloud in the misty grey dawn. The swathes of animals massed on the elevated ground of the Green where they were penned waiting patiently for buyers, watched by crouching sharp-eyed shepherds’ dogs.

Some flocks had arrived the day previous and had been laid up in nearby fields. The weather in September 1906 was overcast with our familiar heavy persistent showers of rain. Farmers arrived in their gigs to purchase sheep and all kinds of cattle, horses, goats and even donkeys. Cheerfullooking farmers’ wives magically appeared carrying creamy butter, fresh eggs and poultry to sell and, of course, with juicy gossip to exchange. Everyone scattered when it rained.

After the auction, the drovers from the Chichester area made up large flocks and they drifted them over the downland en masse home towards Amberley, Chichester and the Hampshire border.

A display on another stall was that of huge ugly moulded heads representing well-known grimacing celebrities of the day. These had clay pipes stuck in their mouths in the form of teeth. The object of the exercise was to throw a hard wooden ball vigorously at a chosen personality.

A new event introduced at the Great Fair was in the form of an ingenious simulated football match. This consisted of half a dozen cut out figures standing in a line, bearing familiar club names. Above these were large holes and anyone feeling so inclined to partake in the jollity could attempt to kick a football sending it through one of the apertures. Thus a goal was scored. A participant could also contrive to knock down one of the figures. Such was the merriment of the soccer in 1906.

Booths housed displays of trinkets, sweets and peddler's wares of all kinds. Walking sticks awaited buyers; appealing dolls smiled and hoped to be bought: gaudy ornaments were on show to attract cottage owners; tangles of bright strings of beads for the girls; toddlers’ rattles; children’s nick nacks… toys and everything imaginable. To stimulate his trade a stall owner in a rakish cap proclaimed, "Any article on the board a penny. The cheapest shop travelling". All the gaiety and mirth of the fun of the fair of 117 years ago.

Writing a Will

Writing a Will is one of those tasks that often goes overlooked. However, the benefits of creating a Will extend far beyond just financial considerations. A Will acts as a powerful document that can provide peace of mind to loved ones and ensures the smooth transfer of assets after you have gone.

Crafting your Will enables you to have full control over the distribution of your assets after you die. By explicitly stating your wishes, you can ensure that any property, investments and personal belongings are distributed how you want. You will often hear me coin the phrase “Your Will, Your Way!” This can prevent confusion, reduce the likelihood of disputes and it can eliminate the need for expensive legal processes.

A Will is not just about assets though, it allows you to protect your loved ones in various ways. Guardianship provisions can be included to designate who will care for children, additionally, a Will can provide some security for elderly or dependent family members who require ongoing support.

There are also many options to leave financial help to the Charities closest to your heart.

The absence of a Will can leave loved ones in a difficult and emotionally challenging position. Having a roadmap in place can sometimes relieve them of the burden of making complex decisions during an already distressing time. It provides a clear set of instructions, making the estate settlement process smoother, faster, and less stressful. By avoiding intestacy laws, a Will also minimises unnecessary costs and preserves the value of the estate for your beneficiaries.

At Nsure we believe writing a Will is a responsibility that we should all embrace. Beyond the financial considerations, it allows you to take control of your legacy, protect the people who matter the most to you and alleviate difficult decisions after you have gone.

Creating a healthier future through food education

In the UK, Obesity accounts for over 30,000 deaths each year with obesity levels having more than doubled over the last decade. Today, one in three children leave primary school overweight or obese and children in deprived areas are more than twice as likely to be obese as their more privileged peers.

Sussex based charity, Table Talk Foundation has a two-pronged mission – namely to deliver high quality food education and provide children with an insight into the hospitality industry, and to also provide mental and physical health support and financial assistance to the local hospitality industry.

The charity’s co-founder, Jessica Aggarwal, (inset picture right) says, “We believe this health crisis requires immediate intervention. We exist to create a healthier future by helping young people build better relationships with food through innovative and fun food education.”

The charity is also keen to provide support for the hospitality industry, which was hard-hit by the COVID-19 pandemic and has continued to suffer from the increased cost of living crisis, rising operational costs, staff shortages and from meeting demands for increased sustainability arising from environmental concerns and climate change. “The hospitality industry is the UK’s third largest industry for employment and yet hospitality faced a staggering loss of £115 billon and over 660,000 jobs during the COVID19 pandemic. Hospitality businesses are three times more likely to fail compared to other UK businesses.” Jessica goes onto say that the charity believes that the hospitality industry plays a vital role in society. “We’re transforming the hospitality industry with a strong focus on mental wellbeing, physical health and financial support. We want to encourage more young people into careers in hospitality and support them every step of the way.”

All funds are spent directly in Sussex

The work of the Foundations is funded by a mix of grants, sponsorship and Industry Partnerships. Jessica expands on the roles each play in supporting the Foundation. “We have been fortunate enough to receive generous grants from several trusts and foundations committed to creating positive change. These include The

Band Trust, Enjoolata Foundation, Fonthill Foundation, Focus Foundation and The Lawson Trust. “Through the kindness and dedication of local people and businesses who’ve sponsored local schools, we've managed to raise over £20,000. These sponsorships not only provide vital funds but also help foster a sense of community around our mission.” Additionally, the charity is, Jessica says, “Proud to collaborate with hospitality businesses that have found creative ways to raise money through customer donations. Initiatives – like adding one pound to a bill or featuring a “Cocktail of the week” – have collectively raised over £43,000. The dedication of our Industry Partners exemplifies the spirit of the hospitality industry.”

Table Talk Business Club – offering monthly events in the best independent hospitality venues in Sussex

Table Talk Foundation also has a sister organisation and Community Interest Company: “Table Talk Business Club, has been instrumental in our fundraising efforts,” and is an exclusive club for executive-level owners and key decisionmakers holding monthly events at “The best independent hospitality venues in Sussex. These events not only raise awareness of our mission but also generate vital funds to support our ongoing work.”

Founded in 2021, the charity has grown extremely quickly - from a Summer Party thrown to launch its mission to a Festive Feast in December –raising £60,000 in its first year. In 2022, the organisation hosted “nine inspiring fundraising events, raising over £40,000 – generating awareness and excitement for the Foundation and

our mission,” and March this year saw Sussex Showcase 2023 raise £22,500 for table Talk Foundation over seven days, “Fourteen chefs with twelve Michelin stars, two Great British Menu Winners and one Masterchef: The Professionals winner amongst them, collaborated to bring guests a one-of-a-kind food experience, in the most exciting restaurants Sussex has to offer.” Future events include a Christmas Party in December and Sussex Showcase in March 2024. The charity is staffed by a combination of a small number of paid staff and volunteers – trustees as well as ad hoc volunteers who fundraise and help out at events - and is, Jessica tells me, now at capacity with current staffing levels. In 2024, the aim is to recruit another chef to grow the team and meet increasing demand.

“All this growth requires more funding so our main challenge will be to bring in more donations and partnerships to ensure we can keep moving forwards.”

Ensuring the generosity of the local people is put directly back into the immediate community.

When I ask how much support the charity receives from the local community, Jessica is emphatic. ”A lot! Our School Sponsorship, Industry

Partnerships and Table Talk Business Club members are predominantly Sussex based. Those attending our events and bidding at fundraising auctions are also mostly from Sussex. We believe in creating an ecosystem whereby the generosity of the local people is put directly back into the immediate community.”

The foundation also works with the Royal Academy of Culinary Arts’ Adopt a School Trust, which brings chefs and hospitality professionals into primary schools, helping children develop healthy eating habits, enthusiasm, interest in food and learn about the hospitality industry. Table Talk Foundation has donated £50,000

to the Trust which sponsors the Foundation’s full-time Sussex-based chef and delivers food education across the Sussex region.

“I learnt so much and had such a fun time – this was the best day of school ever!” Brodie, aged 11 Table Talk Foundation has delivered food education to more than 30 schools and holiday clubs, helping over 1,200 children make informed choices and eat better, teaching skills and knowledge that will foster healthy choices throughout children’s lives. In 2022-2023 the Foundation, in partnership with Adopt a School Trust, raised £200,000 to build a bespoke training kitchen at Plumpton college. From where they can offer Chef on a Farm sessions that give children a hands-on farm-to fork experience. Jessica says, “Sessions started in May and we’ve been overwhelmed with positive feedback.”

“It was wonderful to see the children using the skills Chef John had taught them in a real kitchen. Being able to create their own lunch from scratch would have been the first time most of them would have experienced anything like it.”Primary School Deputy Head Teacher.

This year also saw the Foundation launch its Hospitality Training Programme, featuring eight

sessions and networking lunches. Entirely funded by charity fundraising, the programme is designed to develop critical skills, knowledge and industry connections to hospitality professionals in Sussex. Jessica says that feedback has been positive – with one hundred percent showing “an improved confidence rating in their ability to open safe conversations around mental health and to signpost appropriately.”

“I will be recommending that members of my management team attend future sessions.” –Restaurant General Manager

Table Talk Foundations believes that, “By defending the health of individual children and fighting for industry sustainability, we’re investing in a healthier, more prosperous society. A society that celebrates fresh, whole foods, the joy of cooking, cooking from scratch and a hospitality industry that serves its community and looks after the wellbeing of its employees.”

Feel like you’re failing with your goals?

It’s hard to make changes consistently

In fact, most people I meet have a pretty good idea of what they need to do in order to reach their health and fitness goals, but struggle to put things into action.

Set yourself up to win!

When you feel stuck and as if changes just won’t stick, set yourself up to win.

Pick one thing you can do today which is so easy that it would be ridiculous not to do it.

Make yourself do whatever it is today, whether you feel like it or not. Then, count it as a win.

Maybe tomorrow you’ll feel like you can do a little more – or perhaps you feel you’re better to do the same thing again for a

few days before you add on any more. There’s no right answer. Setting things up so you win often is a great way to give yourself some positive experience with your goals.

When you win, you want to win again

Your goal becomes something you can successfully take steps towards, and not an unsurmountable task – and that makes the mental portion easier.

Never underestimate the power of taking small steps consistently. Things don’t have to be perfect for you to be winning.

Painted lady migration patterns and other migratory insects:

Every year, Southern England becomes the stage for a remarkable sight when 3.5 trillion flying insects, equalling the weight of 20,000 reindeer, migrate across the country! Among these in-sects are the Painted Lady butterflies, the subject of a recent discovery among scientists and butterfly enthusiasts.

The Painted Lady butterfly (Vanessa cardui) has a 4-7.3cm wingspan and often populates dry open areas. Every spring they journey from their overwintering grounds in North Africa and the Mediterranean region to the UK, Asia and Northern Europe. These butterflies obtain average altitudes of 500m, can reach 30mph in favourable conditions, and can do a 9000-mile round trip from Africa to the Arctic Circle! For many years it was a mystery where Painted Lady butterflies went in the autumn, whether they died in the UK or made a return journey, as they fly at such a high altitude and could not be seen by butterfly observers. It was recently discovered that the Painted Lady butterflies do make a return journey in autumn, returning to favourable temperatures further South.

These butterflies are unique due to their migration being the longest-ever recorded flight for butterflies. These migrations can take generations, as they lay their eggs in the UK, and the offspring continue the migration South to southern Europe and North Africa, although not all participate, and some may not survive the harsh UK winters. As they undertake continuous, year-round mating, painted ladies are able to stop, breed and die at locations along the migration route.

How do they know when to start the migration?

The caterpillars of Painted Ladies grow while the days are lengthening, to then fly northwards, and when the days shorten the butterflies know to travel south to warmer climates.

Painted Ladies are the only butterflies found in Iceland and since the 1970’s their population has increased by 32%! In the UK they feed on, amongst other plants, Teasels, Ivy, Ragwort, Heather and Hawkweed.

Although the migration of Painted Lady butterflies is one of a kind, other migratory insects are worth keeping an eye out for.

Sometimes we experience mass migrations of insects in summer and autumn. Between 10 and 25 billion medium and large insects move back and forth out of regions in Britain. This includes hoverflies for example, where 4 billion come to and from Britain each year, and they are essential for pollination and natural pest control.

Mass migrations truly can be a shocking sight, for example in World War 2, military observers reported a ‘golden ball’ drifting over the channel and thought it was poison gas, only for it to be migrating Clouded Yellow butterflies.

We also host other insects on their migratory journeys, such as the Red Admiral. This butterfly is extremely common in spring and throughout summer too, usually spotted near flowers such as Buddleia. They make their journey from North Africa and continental Europe, arriving in the UK in Spring. They lay their eggs in the UK, meaning new butterflies are around from July onwards.

We also host Hummingbird Hawkmoths in Spring, which usually live in Central Asia and in the Mediterranean region. They are named for their similarity to hummingbirds, feeding on nectar using their long beaks. Hummingbird Hawkmoths have very good memories, and often return to the same flowerbeds every day at the same time. They breed in the UK, and due to their inability to survive the winter they make return migrations in Autumn.

If you are lucky enough, you might be able to spot a Monarch Butterfly which makes occasional, sporadic appearances in the UK. It is believed that strong winds may carry individual Monarch butterflies across the Atlantic Ocean

into the UK. They’re native to the US and can fly up to 100 miles per day. Migratory insects that visit the UK undertake incredible journeys driven by instinct and environmental cues, playing an important role in pollination, pest control,

and ecosystem balance. Remember the next time you’re looking at a Painted Lady butterfly for example, it has taken 9000 miles and many generations to get there!

Where to go in September

September tasks

• Watering - keep up in sustained hot weather. For years now we have been having sunny and dry Septembers

• Top up mulch to retain moisture and keep weeds down

• Keep pinching out tomatoes

• Sow new rills of lettuce, radishes and spinach

garden developed by Lady Collum for over 40 years, it features a series of interlocking rooms, each one with a different purpose and feel - a herb garden, pool room, water rill room and classical sandstone summer house. The garden is lovingly tended with an eye for detail and simple colour palettes.

It is open to the public just a few days of the year: www.clintonlodgegardens.co.uk

• Prune the bigger shrubs that have finished flowering like Wygelia, Philadelpus, and Sprirea- cut out the old flowering wood back to new growth that next year’s flowers will bloom from. A harder cut of the Wysteria can wait till January so just lightly trim at the moment.

• Mow your lawn on a higher setting now to keep moisture in the grass to help mitigate against summer browning in dry spells

• Start planning where you want your bulbs to come out in Spring. You can order them online now for planting until November.

Loft conversions with a view

Raising the roof by Nick Roberts RMR Group

Velux balconies

Who needs a garden when you can have a balcony in the sky? Velux balconies – the relatively unknown diamond loft conversions - make this fantasy a reality.

This architectural marvel doesn't just provide an extra room. It promises sunrises with your morning coffee and sunsets with a chilled glass of wine, all from the comfort of your own home. Velux balconies are not just an upgrade to your home, they're an upgrade to your lifestyle.

A room with a view

Transforming your loft into a balcony might seem like reaching for the stars, but the sky is not the limit - it’s just the view. Yes, we're quite literally suggesting a room with a view, and perhaps even a few starlit dinners. Remember those spaceships you imagined as a child? Well, this is your launchpad. That's the power of creative construction. It's about seeing not just what's there, but what could be there.

So, as you sit with your morning cuppa and glance towards the ceiling, let your imagination soar. After all, as the saying goes, the best view comes after the hardest climb – or in this case, after a phone call to your local architect and construction company! robertsmillerredshaw.com

We’ve been trusted by 100,000 customers to transform their home.

It’s no wonder we’re the most recommended on Trust Pilot and Check-a-Trade, so you can rely on us when we say we are the UK’s number one! Our straightforward approach is backed by our trusted local engineers who are on-hand to guide you through the whole process.

A new study conducted by conveyancing solicitors, Bird & Co, has uncovered the most popular regions to live in West Sussex, having analysed Office of National Statistics net migration figures.

In West Sussex, the majority of the population is below the age of 40, except for the district of Arun, where a significant proportion falls within the 65-69 age group.

Comté stuffed mushrooms

On sourdough toast

Ingredients – serves 2 (For all ingredients visit us at Village Larder. Squires garden centre, A24, RH20 3BP)

• 4-6 medium-large flat mushrooms

• 125g smoked bacon, cut into small pieces

• 1 banana shallot, finely chopped or whizzed in a food processor

• 1 garlic clove, crushed or use a food processor

• 4 tbsp rolled oats

• 1 tsp Carla’s rosemary seasoning

• 1 tsp Carla’s piri piri seasoning

• 50g Comté cheese, grated

• 4 slices toasted sourdough

Method

1. Preheat the oven to 200c fan. Wipe any dirt from the mushrooms and remove the stalks, then finely chop the stalks, and set aside. Place the mushrooms on a baking tray flat side down.

2. Fry the bacon in a pan for 8-10 mins until starting to crisp, then add shallots, mushroom stalks, and garlic, fry for a further 5 minutes.

3. Remove from the heat and add the oats and seasonings to the pan, mix well so the pan juices start to absorb into the oats. Spoon the mixture into the hollows of the mushrooms and sprinkle with the grated Comté cheese.

4. Bake for approximately 10-15 minutes until the cheese has melted and serve with toasted sour dough. Find all ingredients at the Village Larder and follow us on Instagram and Facebook for more weekly meal inspiration - @village_larder @mr_mrscheese

Should you top up your state pension?

To qualify for the full State Pension, you need to have 35 years on your NI record. To qualify for any State Pension, you need 10 years.

The government’s state pension forecast can show you the amount you could receive from the State Pension and when you can claim it.

If you have a gap in your NI record, you may be able to top up your contributions and receive a greater income from the State Pension. The government scheme to make voluntary National Insurance contributions going back as far as the 2006/07 tax year has been extended. It will now run until 5 April 2025.

The potential risks of topping up your state pension are that you may die before recouping the

costs, and

that you may face additional taxation,
