Designing a Dry Garden
( See my last Article on Tom Brown at West Dean Gardens) It is imperative that structure is fully considered. The smaller drought tolerant plants tend to be short lived so try to plant a combination of longer lived plants because it will help create a backbone structure. Water them sparingly and once they are established, sit back and watch them grow without watering anxiety. If you have trees you can still plant dry shade tolerant species like Liripoe and Japanese anemones.
Some great Mediterranean plants are Lavender Hidcot, Phlomis, Lamb’s Ear, Va lerian and most of the herbs like Sage, Chives and Oregano, Verbascum and Nepeta. Ornamental grasses include the whole of the Stipa range as well as Calamagro sis Karl Foester and Sesleria autumnalis.
A dry garden doesn't rely on rainwater, irrigation or feeding to survive. Instead, plants are chosen for their drought tolerance. If you do not have much spare time to maintain your garden, a dry garden is one for you. Also it conserves water for the nation and gives you a powerful taste of the TheMediterranean.firstthingyou
Poor and stony soil is a bonus in gardens where you want to grow a wide range of ground cover plants with little maintenance. The gravel garden is a good op tion, suppressing the germination of weeds almost entirely. This balance between plant and stone is characteristic of Mediterranean landscapes. One thing you may want for a more wild natural look is for your plants to self seed, so your gravel needs to be thick enough to prevent normal English weeds coming up, but not too impenetrable that your self seeding plants can’t germinate.
You also need to think about materials as dry gardens can initially require sand, crushed hard core or concrete to improve the drainage.
Some of your plants you will know from the traditional English cottage garden like Alchillea, Santolina, Iris’ Synopation’ and Erigeron karvinskianus.
You don’t have to apply fertiliser to the soil, as this can encourage lush growth which can flop in summer, needing water and become frost damaged in winter. At the time of planting some compost applied to the soil can help them initially. One other reason to think about a shingle mulch is that it locks the moisture in so in times of severe dryness the soil is less likely to turn into Generally,cement!choose plants with grey green or silver leaves as they reflect the sun's rays, helping to conserve moisture within the plant tissues.

“We help people with a diverse range of ages and conditions. For example, medical conditions such as Multiple Sclerosis, Muscular Dystrophy, Parkinsons Disease, etc; physical conditions such as amputees, little people, and arthritis, or consequences of a stroke; issues like reduced flexibility, strength, and co ordination; wheelchair or bed / armchair bound difficulties.”
Steve explains the process further “Once the initial enquiry is received, our occupational therapy (OT) volunteer experts in the group review the needs of potential beneficiaries to make sure that the issues and requirements are understood. They often make first contact to discuss further before considering the practical or engineering skills to tackle the case. It is often the situation that standard and readily available equipment is not appropriate for a person’s specific requirements, which sometimes involves multiple conditions. A volunteer engineer visits to discuss the ‘specification requirements’ and agrees a plan of action with the beneficiary.
Whether a simple adaptation of a clothes peg to help a one armed person hang washing on the line, a modification to a standard wheelchair or rollator to suit a specific person’s need or helping a person with arthritis in their wrists to continue playing the piano, the charity does it all. Essential equipment that might simply help someone use bathroom facilities can tremendously boost their independence. There are many happy beneficiaries to them, additional independence or being able to do something easier than before, is a major boost.

Bespoke equipment designed & supplied for free Remap is a charity that helps people with disability to achieve greater independence and quality of life. Volunteers design and make bespoke equipment for people of all age groups and ethnicities, and varying conditions and disabilities. Affordability is not an issue since equipment is provided by the charity free of charge.
Often, carers, or parents, or the NHS OT representative are also present during these visits.
Local Remap groups in Sussex Steve Whyley, who lives in Storrington, is the chairman of the local group carrying out the Remap projects in West and East Sussex, he tells Sussex Local “We have a team of around 25 people centred around the Brighton area and we need more volunteers, offering whatever time they can spare, to help us ensure we can support as many people as we can, and to ‘make things possible’ for our beneficiaries. Our local group’s area of interest is along the south coast from Littlehampton across to Eastbourne, and northwards to Horsham. There are similar neighbouring local groups covering Chichester and Portsmouth, and in Surrey, and others right across the UK.”

“Our local group receives around 45 enquiries every year, and we have around 25 ‘live’ ongoing cases at any one time. We carry out over 1200 hours of volunteer activity. The number of cases is increasing through greater awareness of the charity activities combined with the desire of people with disability to enhance their day to day quality of life, or to be able to do more activity, independently if possible.”
The charity’s Diamond Jubilee is in 2024, as it was established in 1964 as a single small group of volunteers mainly from ICI on Teesside. From 1968 it’s had a number of local groups around the UK. Steve’s group in Sussex was set up in 1976 by staff and students at Brighton University, one of its original founders is still involved.
On the inside, the space features a large mounting bracket where the passenger seat should be. This space allows fitment of different modules such as a storage basket, child’s car seat or pet carrier, depending on personal needs. In addition, Fiat are offering the option to change seat fabrics so owners can personalise and update their Centoventi during ownership.

Queen Day (Autism Awareness) at Bury CE Primary
Just over a year ago a child named Leo joined our school having moved from a larger setting in another county. He told me he was autistic and was happy for others to know. When discussing interests, he told me he loved Queen and was amazed when I said I like Queen too. He told me it would be amazing if we could have a Queen day. I explained that as much as I like Queen, it wasn’t possible to have a day just celebrating Queen as I would need to have a day for everyone else’s favourite band and we don’t have enough days. Leo persevered and we discussed that we could have an autism awareness day with a Queen theme. We agreed we could do this if he could convince our class representatives it was a good idea. We met with the reps and he explained his idea. Initially there was confusion with the jubilee on the horizon, but it was quickly sorted once Leo started clapping We Will Rock You, then everyone knew a Queen song. There were requests to learn songs with the music teacher and requests to dress up as members of Queen or as favourite rock stars. The day of the event Roll on to the day itself and we were blown away with the support. It was amazing to see their response on the day and to hear the laughter and enthusiasm as we opened the school gates.

The time came for the assembly and as we stood at the front, Leo said “can I do the Freddie ‘wayyyoooohs’” go for it! He realised he did not need the script he prepared and made it clear he could only tell us what autism was like for him and that everyone is different. He told us how it affects him and that it’s his superpower. He then stopped and said, “It was very difficult to make friends in my last school. In this school they just took me in.”

A new day for the last Thursday of term This day was nothing to do with Jubilee celebrations and is in fact referring to the band, Queen.
The long awaited trim trail opened at St Mary’s CE (Aided) Primary School, Pulborough. Although there was a trim trail on site before, it was showing signs of age and was not safe to use. The children mourned its demise, and had enjoyed playing on it. However, the school is now filled with smiles once again, following the long awaited opening. The planning has taken two years, from inception to completion. Features included in the new trim trail

The children were asked what features they wanted on the new trim trail. There were so many suggestions/requests that the list had to be whittled down. It now comprises a balance walk, Burmah bridge, balance weaver, drop rope traverse, two mini link balance walks with a log rope traverse between, a full traverse wall, balance zigzag and spring plank. As part of the plan, an all weather track was laid from the school to the trail, also passing the outdoor classroom, so bad weather is no deterrent to the use of these resources!

Traffic issues. West Sussex traffic officer has requested a walk around the area, to highlight the problems, especially those experienced at the Brook Lane junction for both cars and pedestrians, with overgrown vegetation and the lack of visibility in all directions. It was noted that the street party had been a great success and although the expenses were more than the grant from Horsham District Council, members agreed that the additional costs would be covered by the parish. Street party success; Play park equipment; Traffic issues
Concerns that the issues of traffic and access remains very low in the priority when determining the suitability of any site. Sites being considered for inclusion are for a minimum of 5 homes, but there is no limit in size, when being considered for affordable housing.
Proposed that the SDNP CIL funding received in April should be used for the renovation of the existing older play equipment. This equipment was originally installed in 2003, this work will allow the equipment to remain in use. The first phase work of the work was completed in June, the second phase will be carried out upon delivery of some components. The Alban Head is being used a great deal. Chris Clithero is liaising with the insurers regarding the roof repairs, who requested additional quotes for a different roofing system. Also, a family have donated a bench in memory of their father. Development sites. The SDNPA are starting the process for calling for Land Sites for potential development sites, reminding members that there were other sites, in addition to the Barlavington site, mentioned by residents.
The Swan pub, sports & social club, village hall re vamp & traffic
The Swan pub Our lovely pub has been sold to a private investor who is backing Angus Davies who used to run the Hollist Arms in Lodsworth. Angus and his team are very keen to return the pub to its former glory, which includes restoring the wonderful picture room, which is certainly possible as the vast majority of the pictures are still on site. The Swan working group will be doing an inventory and will be collaborating with them to make it as good as possible, as well as involving historic England.
They are also going to contribute to the costs of restoring the Millennium Arch, so we can complete this work and revamp The Swan sign on top of it. We are also facilitating discussions with WSCC and the SDNPA around improving the parking and public realm in this area and will obviously be consulting with residents once we have a firm plan.
There is obviously a lot to do, but Angus and his Team are going in with their ‘eyes open’ and if all goes according to plan would like to re open before Christmas. Sports and social club and village hall re vamp This Community Project had been paused whilst all the Jubilee celebrations were being planned. We are delighted to say that we have now given all of the work that has been done so far to a local architect who was very involved in the building and development of the Fittleworth Village Stores and we will be arranging a site meeting with him and all those involved to talk about what is and is not possible. As part of a broad consultation process, we hope to have a plan to share with the village and invite comment in the Autumn.

speeding is now recognised as a major problem nationally and police can’t be everywhere. The advice is to educate drivers through Community Speedwatch. Volunteers receive training, and neighbourhood policing team staff will support them. The aim of Speedwatch is to: • reduce death and injury on the roads • improve the quality of life for local communities • reduce the speed of vehicles to the speed limit • increase public awareness of inappropriate speed For more information on the economic and personal effects of speeding go to: Village Gateways: It’s been proved that Gateways such as this one can help to reduce speeding. These will be installed at four locations around West Chiltington with no cost to the Parish Council the money has come from West Sussex County Council due to housing development in the village. We hope you like them. We would like to hear your comments on this and/or any other forthcoming Parish Council projects.
Free visits by West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service: This is a free service offered by the Fire Service to ensure that vulnerable residents are fire safe at home as well as supporting with general health and wellbeing. They can advise on aspects of fire safety: testing smoke detectors to ensure they are working, talking about how to reduce the risk of fire in the home including kitchen fire safety, electrical fire safety, safe heating practices, smoking cigarettes safely and escape plans. They can supply free equipment such as smoke detectors, deaf alarms and equipment for protection when smoking in the home. They can also signpost or refer on to partnership agencies for support with health and wellbeing.

Hot on the heels of his most successful solo tour ever, Steve Hackett announces his Steve Hackett Genesis Revisited Foxtrot at Fifty + Hackett Highlights tour for 2022. The tour will mark the 50th anniversary of the legendary Genesis album Foxtrot which, in 1972, was pivotal in establishing the band as a major force in British rock. Guitarist Steve Hackett joined Genesis in 1971, making his band debut on the Nursery Cryme album which enjoyed a greater commercial success in Europe than the UK. After extensive touring, the band were encouraged, by audience reactions, to further experiment with ever longer compositions and develop their ability to incorporate strong narratives. This, in turn, allowed frontman Peter Gabriel more opportunity to indulge in the theatrics.
