HELLO! June 2022 is a big month for the UK, with Her Majesty the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations over an extended Bank Holiday weekend. There are plenty of official events planned for our region as well as many street and garden parties. Don’t forget Father’s Day on 19th June too. Other events this month include the Big Church Day Out which resumes at Wiston after a twoyear enforced Covid break. If you’ve ever seen the road signs and wondered what it’s all about then read our main charity article. Garden designer Andrew Staib looks at including trees in your garden (space permitting!) and health expert Heather Smith offers some straight-talking weight-loss advice. Fancy a solar-powered car which you never have to charge? This month’s motoring feature looks at the futuristic Aptera with a 70km range which is expected to launch next year. Sussex Snippets Community news from across the counties Two Velocity road patching machines are being deployed across West Sussex to proactively seek and fill potholes before the regular inspections by Highways teams. In the first four weeks of the 2022/23 financial year the machines completed just over 1,100 repairs. Over 60 disadvantaged children and families will receive help and support, thanks to a grant of £30,000 from Sussex Freemasons to the charity Family Support Work (FSW). FSW supports disadvantaged families and their children who live in isolated rural areas or deprived seaside towns in Sussex. www.sussexmasons.org.uk. Sussex homeless charity Turning Tides are hosting their biggest SleepOut yet on Saturday 18th June to raise vital funds to support the life-saving services they provide. The West Sussex children’s hospice Chestnut Tree House, has launched a new challenge event – Wild Wood Swim – and is looking for participants to take on a 1km, 3km or 5km open water swim to raise vital funds. On 29th April, the charity Carers Support West Sussex, West Sussex County Council, local NHS, and partners welcomed more than 150 West Sussex unpaid family and friend carers, and health professionals, to the One Big Day event at Fontwell Park. The event was developed by carers, for carers and focussed on them being seen, heard, included, and supported in a world where finances are a challenge and systems, and services are stretched to the limit. Activities which carers enjoyed included reiki, satin hand moisturising, reflexology and mini-gel manicure, and an introduction to mindfulness, mini terracotta plant pot painting. The next meeting is on 4th June at 10.00 am at The Glade to carry out the annual path clearance there. All are welcome to come and enjoy fresh air and friendly company – and a break for coffee. Ashington Festival Princess 2022 The 2022 Ashington Carnival Princess was chosen at the annual Children's Disco at Ashington Community Centre on 1st May. There were a lot of children and parents that attended making a great atmosphere at the disco with all the children joining in with the dance competitions and
dancing around the hall full of excitement for the lucky draw raffle. This year’s Carnival Princess is 10 year old Angela Collins. Angela will lead the Carnival procession at the Ashington Festival on 20th August and will be supported by attendants Ellie Willard (7) and Eleanor Durnan (5) plus pageboys Toby Utting (5) and Finley Pearson (5). The children were all chosen by a lucky draw. The Carnival procession starts at 1.30 and follows a route through Ashington Village to finish on the Recreation Ground where an amazing line up of activities and stage acts feature all afternoon and into the evening. There will also be the usual favourites including a car boot sale, classic cars, fun dog show, funfair and all kinds of stalls plus, of course, food and drink. Bringing height in to your garden Introducing new trees into a garden can fill people with trepidation. The wrong tree can outgrow its space, cast shade, or it can drop unwanted leaves. Its roots can undermine houses or it fails to survive due to soil or wind conditions. This article will help you choose the right tree for the right place. Given that most of our gardens are on the small to medium size I will concentrate on trees from 2 to 5 metres in height Photinia Trees must be chosen carefully. A well positioned tree with a delicate and spacious leaf and branch character can create a canopy that will give your garden a sense of height, enclosure, intimacy and privacy without dominating the garden. Proportion Choosing more than one new tree in your garden can give your garden a more glade like effect. They can soften the effect of neighbour’s houses and overlooking windows and actually make the garden feel bigger as a canopy immediately stimulates our memories of the countryside and different landscapes we have visited. If your garden is quite bare, planting trees normally means selecting more than one so that the ‘weight’ and ‘volume’ of them will balance each other. However if you have a large tree next door, you can factor this in as your own, and therefore all you need to do is balance this neighbour’s tree with one or two of your own. Evergreen Trees Small evergreen trees The more robust the evergreen presence you want, say for privacy, the more dense the leaf canopy needs to be. This can have the advantage of being perfect for screening but they will still cast shade and if you grown them near a fence careful that over time they won’t also block out your neighbours view or light. Also they
will want to protrude outwards as well as grow upwards so this has to be factored in. For a denser canopy of leaves, these are some of my favourites: Arbutus Uendo, Magnolia Little Gem, Ligustrum excelcium, Loquat and Photinia. Photinia is a common tree, normally kept as a hedge, but still a high performer with its electric red leaves. If you have acid soils you can go for the Rhododendrons and Camellias. More delicate evergreens are Olives, Pittisporum ‘Silver Queen’ and Viburnum tinus whilst Ceanothus can form an ‘umbrella’ like shape over a bed or path. Delicate small trees that lose their leaves Don’t forget you relax in your garden mainly in the warmer months so think hard before you buy an evergreen. They are less generous to wildlife normally, and will you really be needing their shade, privacy or dense green backdrop over the Winter months? For a more open canopy that lets dappled light through, you could think of Amelenchier lamarki, Weeping Birch, Weeping Cherry, Malus Red Sentinal, Sorbus Pink Pagoda (or the smaller Sorbus pseudovilmorinii), Cercis Forest Pansey (or the smaller green leaved Cercis Avondale). Albezia is a heavenly tree though it needs a lot of sun and a sheltered position.

There is also Prunus amanogawa, Hamamelis and the perfectly formed, classic of all small trees, the Japanese Acers. The only trouble with these is they like to be the centre of attention and need a lot of neutral space around them. Laburnum Golden Showers, is a tree that has gone out of fashion but after the yellow display of flowers in Spring has a very interesting branch structure. Prunus Hally Jolvette is worth considering as it has a well behaved rounded canopy and only gets to 5 metres in height. Also think about Acer griseum (The Paperbark Tree), Salix exiguta and the two small Magnolias, ‘India Magic’ and ‘ Laura’. For wildlife try the Hawthorn ‘Prunifolia’. The Salix is a great bad haircut looking tree and suits filling up a space in the very back of a garden or next to a large pond. All of these trees will give your garden a lovely sense of breadth and depth without a tree surgeon being called in every year. Also the vertical fruit trees like Malus ‘Adirondack’ and Malus Ballerina can be tucked away in a bed and nicely contrast any weeping trees you might have. Unusual Trees For more unusual trees you could try Rhus lacinata (though it will sucker with its roots over

the years) You could also think of Euonymous Red Cascade, Liquidamber ‘Gum Ball’ or the majestic, if slow growing, Cornus cousa ‘Miss Satori’. The ‘Gum Ball’ only gets to 2.5m and as you can imagine the autumn colours alone make it worth growing. Acacia pravissima is another interesting tree with an open canopy, especially if you are considering a Mediterranean style garden.

Turning wasted space into a working place By Nick Roberts RMR Group The post pandemic world has arrived. It’s a more hygienic world. A world of new perspectives and habits. And for many of us, this new world has created permanent new lifestyles; working from home – once abused and frowned upon – now covers a large percentage of the population. Gaining & losing the same weight? By Heather Smith Are you in a cycle of losing and regaining the same pound or two for months at a time?
Over five days, that’s a 2500 calorie deficit. Which will also result in weight loss.
Do you find yourself sticking to your food plan and creating a calorie deficit during the week, and taking a more ‘flexible’ approach at the weekend? Have you ever thought about how easy it is to cancel out your hard-gained calorie deficit – and perhaps even end up in a calorie surplus?
But, if at the weekend you eat more than your body needs to maintain weight, then you’re literally eating (or drinking) away the calorie deficit you’ve created.
The weekend makes up 29% of your week. 48% if you include Friday too. When you look at the numbers like this, it becomes easy to see how much of an impact the more relaxed approach at the weekend can have. Whether you’re counting your intake, or taking the more simple (and for most people, likely just as effective – at least at first) approach of simply making better choices for most meals, then you should be achieving at most a 500 calorie deficit each day. Over seven days, that’s a 3500 calorie deficit. Which will result in weight loss.
The calories add up annoyingly quickly. You could happily eat back a 2500 calorie deficit with a takeaway and a bottle of wine. So, choose when you’re going to eat or drink into your calorie deficit carefully, and in full knowledge. But also remember that no food is ‘good’ or ‘bad’. Nothing should be banned or off limits. We value different foods for different reasons at different times. Just know that going all-out at the weekend to ‘reward’ yourself for sticking to your plan all week might not be helping you get closer to your goal. www.fitbiztraining.co.uk

Historians are divided as to how brutal the conquest was: some believing that the native population were slaughtered or forced to flee to the west; while others think there was a great deal of assimilation. No one can be sure, as written records from those times are few and unreliable. What is known is that nearly every place name in Sussex is Saxon in origin. Other counties, for example, Devon and Cornwall, have a good mix of Saxon and pre-Saxon place names, but here in the land of the ‘South Saxons,’ there is very little to remind us of the days of the Roman Empire or of the British tribes that co-existed with it, their history was, at the very least overshadowed by the arrival of the newcomers. The first king of Sussex, according to the AngloSaxon Chronicle, was Aella, who landed on the Sussex coast with his three sons and their families. The old English scribes loved to paint a picture of valiant and ruthless warriors, who, in a series of glorious battles, cowed and killed the natives who resisted them. The truth, though, may be less bloody. It seems likely, that in many instances, existing communities, found common cause with the settlers. Evidence from archaeological sites, like Highdown, north of Goring and Ferring, suggests that the two ethnic groups worked together for a common cause. The last king of Sussex was Aethewalh, who ruled in the mid-seventh century. He made alliance with King Penda of Mercia against their mutual enemy, Wessex. For a time, the alliance proved glorious for Sussex, and its proud king invaded and occupied the Meon Valley and the Isle of Wight. He ruthlessly put to death surviving
princes on Wight, who might threaten his rule. By this time, all the old English kingdoms had been converted to Christianity, all apart from Sussex, which clung to its pagan ways. When Bishop Wilfrid of Ripon arrived on the Sussex coast at Selsey, in 666, the Sussex king ordered his men to attack the bishop and his monks, and they were lucky to escape with their lives. However, 20 years later, fete dealt Sussex a cruel blow: the harvests failed and starvation beckoned. The great Wessex king, Caedwalla, who was a great friend of Bishop Wilfrid, overwhelmed Sussex in a surprise attack, crushing all resistance, and subsumed Sussex into Wessex. Yet, the old instincts died hard, and during the following reign of King Ine, Sussex rose in revolt, led by two men of royal birth, Byrthun in the west and Andhun in the east. It would seem that the idea of an East and a West Sussex dates back to those far off days. The Godwin family, who ruled England with an iron fist in the early eleventh century, had ancestral lands at Bosham. It was one of the Godwins, Harold, who was declared king of England in January 1066, and died, along with all his nobles at the Battle of Hastings, ten months later. The Sussex flag, unlike other county flags I could mention, is not the creation of clever tourist executives, but dates back to medieval times. Sussex knights went into battle with the ‘martlets’ emblem emblazoned on their shields.

Sandgate Singers are a vibrant community choir based in Storrington, supporting the village and surrounding villages of the South Downs
The choir was founded in 1983, and has a current membership of fifty.

Membership of the choir is open to everyone and no auditions are required. The choir prides itself on welcoming new members, enabling people to benefit from the pleasure of singing, and the enjoyment of new friendships, especially for new people moving to the area.
The choir also performs at local retirement homes and for community groups in the area and supports local charities to promote community links.
The choir are known for their varied and popular concert programmes, both religious and secular, performed three times per year. Past concerts performed include The Armed Man by Karl Jenkins, Carmina Burana, Songs from the Shows including les Miserables,
The choir benefits enormously from the musical direction of Will Waine as our new Musical Director. Will brings considerable knowledge and skill to the role, having created choirs for Cathedrals and singing with such prestigious choirs as the “Sixteen” and Chichester cathedral. Added to these attributes Will is very enthusiastic and has a ability of making singing both a skill and a pleasure.

Big Church Day Out A big deal at the Wiston Estate by editor Kris Thomas
35-40,000 visitors Many events are making a welcome come back this summer and Big Church Day Out (BCDO) is one of them. Ticket holders who were unable to come in 2020 due to Covid-19 have rolled over their tickets and these, combined with new ticket sales, mean that the 2022 event is on track to host 35-40,000 visitors this month. History
The idea for a Christian orientated music festival was conceived in 2009 after a meeting between Tim Jupp and the Goring family of Wiston estate. Tim Jupp was a founding member of contemporary English Christian band Delirious? (the question mark is part of the name). Originating from Littlehampton, the band had a successful career between 1992 and 2009 playing in over forty countries and in the UK at venues such as Wembley Stadium, Hyde Park and the o2 Arena, as well as on the main stage at Glastonbury in 1999. Tim’s idea with BCDO was to hold an event to serve the churches in the area but to also welcome non-religious people who were looking to experience a friendly and safe
local music festival. Big Church Day Out was the first ever event to be held on the Wiston estate and 13,000 people attended the first one. Tim explained that all did not run smoothly that first year! “It was incredibly hot and we had some serious traffic problems. Food vans didn’t turn up, there wasn’t enough drinking water nor enough team members...The bravest thing we did was to carry on and do the 2nd year.”
Since that challenging first year, the team have developed the infrastructure including building tracks to make the estate suitable for other large-scale events such as the popular Steam Rally and the many other events that Wiston now hosts. The festival was extended from one day to three days in 2010 and the number of attendees went up to 25,000. What’s it all about? Primarily it’s a summer music festival - not quite on the scale of Glastonbury but it’s grown year on year. Tim elaborates; “There are 6 music stages and it’s all sorts of music - opera, classical, rock and roll, hip hop - all genres. This year there will be 70 different artists over the weekend, the larger names are American as the Christian music industry in America is huge. There will be around 70 food vans and lots of

children’s activities - fairground rides, and such. Many are free. We have a team of 20 working for the event all year, but more than 3,000 team will be on site during the event who are responsible for looking after up to 40,000 people including approximately 700 caravans and 8,000 cars. It’s exciting and challenging and takes a full month to set up. We thought, go large or go home! Every Christian denomination is welcome as are the non-religious. The name reflects the fact that it’s inclusive - a space for all churches to come together and gather for a weekend”. About half of the attendees (over 15,000 people) will be camping at Wiston which is at an additional cost to the festival itself. The 2022 event spans 4 days from Thursday 2nd to Sunday 5th June. Campers can arrive from Thursday and stay through to Sunday morning. The acts take place on the Friday and Saturday. This year the event is on the same weekend as the Queen's Platinum Jubilee. Rain is a bigger problem!” Costs / Fundraising BCDO 2020 was cancelled just eight weeks before the event was due to take place and many of the costs were unrecoverable. BCDO doesn’t make a profit and in fact will need donations to make up the shortfall from this year’s event. 120 different charities are involved and sponsor the various activities, raising their own profiles at the same time. BCDO itself is an independent charity with an annual budget in excess of £2.5 million. They raise around 90% of this through their main activities - sponsorship, ticket sales etc but have to fundraise for the remaining 10%, around £250,000. An important part of the festival weekend is fundraising on behalf of the BCDO partner charity, Tearfund. Tearfund is a Christian charity that works with churches in more than 50 of the world’s poorest countries. I asked Tim if he had plans to launch another Big Church Day Out somewhere else. “No, we don’t have any expansion plans. We did take it up north for a couple of years but the southern one has become so well known and there’s still room to grow at Wiston. Our aim is to support the local area, it brings in business to shops, hotels, pubs. Life interest trust By Will Writer Emma Wells MIPW Regardless of how you feel about paying for later life care, it is always important to explore your options. Many clients approach me regarding putting their home into a Trust as they are worried about it being used to fund long term care, leaving nothing for their family to inherit however, this is rarely a viable option. In fact, if you have been advised to put your property into a Trust to avoid it being used to fund care home fees then it is very likely that you have been mis- sold a product that won’t work. The local authority are wise to such Trusts and should you require care, they simply set aside the Trust as though it doesn’t exist and value your estate with your property included. The onus is on you to prove there was a legitimate reason for creating the Trust that wasn’t anything at all to do with care home fees. What you should be doing is looking at what you can legitimately do that isn’t going to land you in hot water with the local authority, the Tax man or leave disgruntled children.
Using a Life Interest Trust in your Will secures half of your property for your chosen beneficiaries. It does so by you leaving your half of your property to beneficiaries other than your partner on first death but with a Life Interest in the property for your partner. This means that your partner can carry on living in the property treating it as though it is theirs in its entirety including being able to sell the property and buy another in its place. The person with the Life Interest needs take precedence over the beneficiaries until stipulated within your Will but your share is not owned by them. This means that should they go on to need care only their half of the property can be assessed as a means of paying for it. Your children will therefore inherit at least half of the value of your property and your partner will be able to afford high quality care. It is a compromise but one that truly works. Storrington neighbourhood wardens Dog behaviour & coffee mornings Calling all dog owners. We have recently received several complaints about dogs not being kept under control. In partnership with the National Trust and Bone Canis Dog Training, we have arranged for a dog behaviourist to be available to help with any training and issues that you wish to discuss. We will be at Sullington Warren on the green area, on Wednesday 22nd June from 09:00 to 11:00. There will be an arena set up, so there is a safe environment to work with your dog. Please drop by and say hello. We would like to thank everyone that has attended our coffee mornings that we run at the leisure centre on the last Thursday of every month. It has been great to see our residents and we have enjoyed the chats and laughs. Due to the benefits that the coffee mornings bring (social interaction, engagement with Age UK and helping
to stop isolation and loneliness), we are going to continue them for the near future. A big thank you to Julie from Age UK, for the help and advice that she have given at the coffee mornings. Solar Panels - are they worth it? Investing in your home for renewable energy by Helen Say Solar panels as an alternate source of energy To help hit “Net Zero by 2050”, the UK Government announced a gas boiler ban in 2019. By 2025 no new houses can have one and by 2035, the UK will phase out their installation altogether. This caused a stir in the energy industry (this was before the current turmoil of world events putting pressure on energy prices) and many are looking for alternate energy to heat their homes. One option is solar energy. Money Saving Expert says installing solar panels on an average home costs around £5K, and the impact on energy bills depends on various aspects of your home. Energy Saving Trust estimates a typical household with a 3.5 kilowattpeak system can save between £170 - £440 per year on energy bills. You can be paid for solar energy you “export” to the national energy grid with the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) scheme.
Is the UK weather beneficial for solar energy? Despite the UK’s grey and gloomy reputation, it has enough sunlight to power solar panels and gets the same level of solar energy as areas in France/Spain. It's about daylight, not hours of sunshine or temperature. Solar panels use light to produce electricity, not heat. Though they obviously produce more power in a sunny day, they still produce a considerable amount of energy when it’s cloudy. Wind and snow aren’t necessarily bad. Wind can be a cooling mechanism for domestic solar panels and make them more efficient. A light flurry of snow will melt with the panel’s residue heat, although heavy snowfall will need to be brushed away as it’ll prevent the panel working to its full potential. If you’re considering switching to renewable energy, solar panels are worth further investigation. The Parish Yard was used for cleaning vehicles so we have put the case forward that a Tearoom would use less water than car washing… Chanctonbury Nurseries planning application was submitted in March. The site is included in the Neighbourhood Plan so the principle of development is sound but there seem to be a few errors in the documents and a few minor amendments that could be made. WSCC has suggested that the Public Footpath running from the school through past the balancing pond to the site is upgraded to Bridleway standard so that it can be used by pedestrians, cyclists and equestrians. The Neighbourhood Plan stresses the importance of these
sustainable transport routes in and around the village and forming important links into the countryside and beyond. WSCC is planning a project to install a new surface and undertake drainage works on the Public Footpath that runs from the Church over the stream and joins the top of Malthouse Lane and the bridleway beyond so another important village route will be usable all year round.
Hopefully, by the time you read this, the hanging baskets will be up. They bring colour to our village and serve to brighten London Road both in time for the Queen’s Jubilee and Ashington Festival. Storrington & Sullington Parish Council Young people’s activity survey; Parking, HGVs, Car park Activities for young people. The Parish Council is working on a project to evaluate the activities which are available for young people in the Parish. With this in mind, they are asking for all organisations and groups who offer activities to contact the Clerk with details so that a comprehensive list can be drawn up, and any gaps identified. The Council will be in attendance at the Jubilee Party on 4th June to speak with people about this, so do look them up. Sussex Local will be publishing the list later in the year. Edited extracts from the Parish Council meeting held on 27th April 2022 Parking on School Hill - County Council reported complaints received about double yellow line parking on School Hill. Recommended Parish Council apply for Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) to introduce no waiting restrictions like in North Street. Suggested could be included in TRO application planned for introduction of 20mph speed restrictions on School Hill and Manleys Hill. Review of HGV Routing Signage on School Hill
- Chair and Clerk met with County Councillor and WSCC’s Highways Department to review HGV signage and how to better manage 7.5t restriction. Suggestions include: removing “except for access” park of restriction sign, relevant signage on both sides of road creating gateway effect, ensure route signs are free from overgrowth, changing wording on signage on A283 to direct deliveries for Old Mill Square to Water Lane (rather than Waitrose only); and organising traffic survey via CCTV to assess extent to which restrictions are ignored and how to enforce them. Due to the car park works and news that Waitrose is to be closed for refurbishment in July, it was proposed that survey takes place in September in “normal” conditions. Waitrose car park alterations - A member of public disappointed at lack of consultation or prior notice of plans for car park and was also aware of concerns from business owners about various aspects of project.
