Charity & Community News

HELLO!

18

November is a busy month with Guy Fawkes night on Sunday 5th and Remembrance Sunday on the 12th. Many local communities will gather to watch armed forces personnel, cadets and members of the Scouting organisation parade and lay wreaths in memory of those who have lost their lives in the line of duty. You many also have heard of “Movember” a month-long charity event when men grow moustaches to raise awareness of male health issues. Since 2016 Movember has raised over £25 million towards men’s health and wellness initiatives. Our charity article this month is on Carers Support West Sussex. An esteemed organisation doing so much for the many unpaid carers in our community. If you know of a West Sussex charity in need of recognition please get in touch. All charity articles are offered free of charge and promotion in these pages not only raises awareness but can lead to much needed donations. This month is also the start of Christmas fayres and markets, putting us in the mood for another festive season! We have lots featured in our What’s On guide and more online at www.sussexlocal.net Lest we forget,

Kris & Jeff

Scouts in the Community - Seeking leaders! 1st Sullington and Storrington Scouts brings scouting to over 150 young people within in the local area. It was our pleasure to assist West Chiltington Schools Family Running Festival in September. Scouting is not just about providing fun activities for the young people to enjoy or keeping them off screens and getting them outdoors- although we do both and they love it! Like all youth groups, we always need willing adult volunteers! This maybe working directly with the young people: Beavers (6-8 years), Cubs (8-10 years), Scouts (10-14 years), Explorers (14-18 years). Volunteers for all sections are warmly received and always in need. Or maybe more behind the scenes like our Treasurer, Board of Trustees, Membership Secretary - who all provide an invaluable supporting role to our group. Areas we need immediate help would be a Social Media Support – an individual willing to help promote what we are doing on social media platforms. Carers Support West Sussex…

Offering support to unpaid carers in the county. By Lynn Smith NHS England, defines a carer as “Anyone, including children and adults who looks after a family member, partner or friend who needs help because of their illness, frailty, disability, a mental health problem or an addiction and cannot cope without their support. The care they give is unpaid. Carers Support West Sussex (CSWS) is the amalgamation of three organisations who saw fit to become one. Registered with the charity commission in 2008, the charity is now fifteen years old and has been growing from strength to strength as the need for support of carers has grown. Sonia Mangan, CEO of Carers Support West Sussex, says that there is a nationwide need to provide support to these carers. CSWS is West Sussex’s support for those who are caring for someone. The charity is dedicated to offering unpaid carers the information, guidance and emotional support they need, whether the individual’s carer journey is a sudden responsibility or a lifelong commitment. “It’s (CSWS) aim is to deliver a well networked and supportive approach to each carer in the county, in the city, town or village in which they live, providing local solutions to family and friend carers.” Why is the charity necessary? Carers UK has provided key national facts that give context as to why the charity is needed: Over the period 2010-2020, 4.3 million people became unpaid carers – 12,000 people per day (Petrillo and Benett, 2022); fifty-nine percent of unpaid carers are women (Census 2011), women are more likely to become carers and to provide more hours of unpaid care than men, and more women than men provide high intensity care at ages when they would expect to be in paid work (Petrillo and Bennett, 2022). Also, one in seven people in the workplace in the UK are juggling work and care (Carers UK, Juggling Work and Care, 2019) and between 2010-2020, people aged 46-65 were the largest age group to become unpaid carers. In fact, 41 percent of

people who became unpaid carers were in this age group (Petrillo and Bennett, 2022). CSWS offers guidance and practical and emotional support Accessing this support, Sonia Mangan explains, begins with the carer making contact or being referred to CSWS, by a professional who has recognised a need for support. The carer discusses their caring situation with a wellbeing worker who can assess the best course of action. The charity doesn’t subscribe to the belief that one size fits all. In fact, they believe that every caring situation is different and should be treated with the respect and dignity deserved. One way of achieving this aim is via a statutory carer assessment. The purpose of this assessment is to determine the help and support which could be provided to the carer, which may include access to equipment or services offered by the council. During the assessment, common topics of discussion include: The carer’s role and how it affects their life; how the carer feels about caring and the options available; and the carers health and wellbeing, including physical, mental and emotional problems the carer might be having. The assessment will also discuss the carers relationships, social life and recreation, as well as employment, training, studying and volunteering, and planning for emergencies. All the support on offer to carers is completely free of charge. If a carer would like to join a carer group – whether that is face-to-face or online – or If they wish to receive carer benefits advice, or arrange for a

volunteer to do a regular check in and chat, all they need to do is register with CSWS. A twenty-six percent increase in carer registrations CSWS has over 30,000 carers registered and has seen a staggering twenty-six percent increase with them. During 2022 – 23, 5,301 new carers were registered with the service. And, according to the charity, the number of monthly registrations just keeps climbing and climbing. The charity points those carers who are new to caring, or those looking for more information, to the Carers Smart Search, accessed via the CSWS website. This simple tool takes a couple of minutes answering questions and guides the carer to the information they’re seeking. If the carer cannot find what they’re looking for a phone call to the charity should provide them with the help they need. Defining success CSWS’s vision, Sonia Mangan says, is to bring the day forward when family and friend carers are seen, heard, and included. During 2020, the charity’s trustees, employees and volunteers worked together with carers to review who CSWS

are, what they aspire to and the actions needed to achieve these aspirations. “The vision and the strategy are the driving force of the organisation. And so, success is defined by how we stack up against that vision and the six strategy aims.” There is regular consultation with carers to establish if their needs have changed, to ensure we are delivering the right services at the right time. We also constantly ask carers to give us their opinions about how we are performing. And with ninety-nine percent of carers saying they would recommend CSWS to other carers

You can find out more about CSWS’s six strategy aims from the “Our Strategy for the future” report, available on the website. Carers Rights Day – Thursday 23 November 2023 Each year Carers Rights Day brings organisations together to help carers in the local community know their rights and find out how to get the help and support they are entitled to. This year the campaign will focus on the ways in which caring costs unpaid carers. Events will be running throughout the week and CSWS encourages carers to book their places in advance. Predominately funded by local government contracts CSWS receives most of its funding from West Sussex County Council (WSCC) with the remaining funding coming from grants and other trading facilities. Currently, CSWS has 118 employed members of staff and 73 volunteers. The charity relies upon the support of volunteers who Sonia Mangan describes as “Fantastic and assist in all areas. Last year,

Charity Profile 213

volunteers contributed an incredible 146,704 minutes of volunteering. The volunteer run “check in and chat” telephone befriending service provided 20,910 minutes! Which helped carers feel more socially connected. “We are in the process of reviewing our volunteer roles, but will very much be recruiting for new volunteers very soon – so keep an eye out for the roles on our website. When I ask Sonia what the greatest challenge is facing CSWS, the response she gives is, sadly, a common one amongst the charity sector. “One of the greatest challenged faced by the charity is the ability, with the resources given, to keep up with demand. CSWS wants to ensure that each carer is given the time they deserve, which may mean that waiting lists may be longer than the charity would like. In this case the charity asks carers for their patience and understanding.” Contact Carers Support West Sussex The Orchard, 1-2 Gleneagles Court, Brighton Road, Crawley, RH10 6AD. Tel: 0300 028 8888. Writing a Will By Will Writer Emma Cohen MIPW Writing a Will is one of those tasks that often goes overlooked. However, the benefits of creating a Will extend far beyond just financial considerations. A Will acts as a powerful document that can provide peace of mind to loved ones and ensures the smooth transfer of assets after you have gone. Crafting your Will enables you to have full control over the distribution of your assets after you die. By explicitly stating your wishes, you can ensure that any property, investments and personal belongings are distributed how you want. You will often hear me coin the phrase “Your Will, Your Way!” This can prevent confusion, reduce the likelihood of disputes and it can eliminate the need for expensive legal processes. A Will is not just about assets though, it allows you to protect your loved ones in various ways. Guardianship provisions can be included to designate who will care for children, additionally, a Will can provide some security for elderly or dependent family members who require ongoing support.

There are also many options to leave financial help to the Charities closest to your heart. The absence of a Will can leave loved ones in a difficult and emotionally challenging position. Having a roadmap in place can sometimes relieve them of the burden of making complex decisions during an already distressing time. It provides a clear set of instructions, making the estate settlement process smoother, faster, and less stressful. By avoiding intestacy laws, a Will also minimises unnecessary costs and preserves the value of the estate for your beneficiaries. At Nsure we believe writing a Will is a responsibility that we should all embrace. Beyond the financial considerations, it allows you to take control of your legacy, protect the people who matter the most to you and alleviate difficult decisions after you have gone. Creamy baked gnocchi With seasonal squash & spinach Ingredients • 500g seasonal squash of your choice, deseeded and cut into small chunks. • 1 tbsp oil • 2 garlic cloves, crushed • 1 tsp ground cinnamon • ½ bag spinach, washed • 250g Tims Dairy natural Greek yogurt • 80g gruyere, grated • 500g gnocchi • 2 tbsp pine nuts • Seasoning Method 1. Place the squash in a heatproof bowl with a splash of water and a pinch of seasoning, cover, and microwave for 5 mins or until tender, or alternatively you can roast for 25-30 minutes in the oven with a little olive oil. 2. Two options for losing weight By Heather Smith - Nutritionist & Personal Trainer Two Options for Losing Weight Option 1 - Cut your intake drastically, increase your activity and hold on tight. Option 2 - Make sustainable changes to your diet and exercise habits. Now, no one is going to tell you that option 1 won’t work. It will work, and it’ll work quickly. But, you’ll reach a long lasting, hard plateau fairly quickly. Then, you’ll need to cut your intake and increase your activity further and further – until you’re surviving on a tiny amount of food and spending all your time exercising. Worse, if you dare to take a couple of days off, or eat a little more, the weight will stick to you like glue. Sadly, this is a position many find themselves in.

Option 2, however, will get off to a bit of a slower start. Not much seems to happen at first but then the change starts to accelerate and snowball. This approach is much more sustainable both in terms of the habits you’re putting into place and in terms of the results you will see over the long term. It’s kind of like delayed gratification, except it’s not, because you’ll almost certainly never reach your goals with option 1. So, if you’re looking for true last-for-life results, don’t be tempted to do the most you possibly can – instead, do what is genuinely sustainable for the long term and work at consistently putting these changes into place. I think you’ll be surprised at how well this approach works for you. www.fitbiztraining.co.uk

Go Green Behind the Wheel Eco-Driving Tips to Reduce Your Carbon Footprint Here are some tips to save fuel and money while helping the planet: Drive smoothly Sudden accelerations and hard braking waste fuel. Gently accelerate and coast more while anticipating traffic patterns ahead. Cruise control also helps maintain a fuel-efficient constant speed. Monitor your speed Speeding wastes fuel. Optimal fuel economy is achieved between 30-50 mph. Above 50 mph, fuel economy drops rapidly. Use cruise control on motorways to avoid speeding. Reduce idling Idling for over 10 seconds uses more fuel than restarting your engine. Cut idling time by turning off your engine if stopped for more than 30 seconds. Exceptions include heavy traffic jams.

Lighten the load Extra weight reduces fuel economy, so remove unnecessary items from your car. An extra 100 pounds can reduce efficiency by up to 2%. Also avoid using roof racks when not needed. Check tire pressure Under-inflated tires create more rolling resistance which reduces fuel economy. Check pressures monthly and before long trips. Proper inflation also enhances safety and tire lifespan. Limit air conditioning (A/C) Use A/C sparingly. At faster speeds, opening windows is more efficient than A/C. Park in shade to keep your car cooler. Schedule maintenance to ensure A/C runs efficiently. Following these simple eco-driving tips will boost your fuel efficiency, save money on fuel, and reduce harmful emissions.

In Your Garden

Monthly gardening ideas & tasks by Andrew Staib of Glorious Gardens

Bulbs- a guide to a colourful Spring garden When a client asks me to design a garden with all year colour, my first thoughts are normally-“Right, lots of Spring bulbs so that the rest of the beds can be taken up with Summer and Autumn flowering plants!” They are the most efficient way to have colour from January to May without taking up too much space and bulbs can be planted in areas where the trees haven’t come into leaf so they survive where other flowering plants can’t. And they are inflation busting with most coming back Allium purple sensations in greater abundance each year. Below are some tips on what and where to plant Lawn this month. It is not fashionable these days but why not plant up a large area of your lawn with Crocuses. Alliums - wow factor Plant your Alliums deep as their long stem They will delight you when they push up through growth under the soil to reach the surface will the grass and in the 70’s colour scheme of purproduce stronger more wind tolerant stems. You can also try the giant Snowdrop Leucojuim in a quiet corner of the garden. Plant in amongst other plants You can plant your bulbs in amongst evergreen ground cover which doubles the use of the space and also hides the foliage once the bulbs have finished. Try planting in amongst an area of Perriwinkle, Ajuga, Violets or even Ivy. Snowdrops are good at the base of Japanese anemones before the latter come into leaf. Planting Advice and Care The packet that the bulbs arrive in will normally tell you the depth and spacing for planting up. If you are planting in clumps dig a whole section of the bed up of about 40cm in diameter rather than try to plant them individually. Bulbs as a rule need very well drained soil so if you are in a lot of clay really prepare the soil well with grit and organic improver and even then you will have to experiment with what survives. If you have planted in pots make sure they don’t dry out which is possible if we have a dry Autumn or Winter. Bulbs like a mulch feed whether in pots or in the open ground so this can done now after you have planted them. If you deadhead the old flowers once they have finished then you will stop the plant having to produce seeds which can weaken it. Most people though like to leave the old seedheads of Alliums to dry out as they look very sculptural over the Summer and Autumn. Lastly if you leave the foliage to die back naturally then more of the energy of the plant can return to the bulb increasing its health.

The humble garage Untapped expansion potential? By Nick Roberts RMR Group A Hidden Gem in Plain Sight The humble garage. A sanctuary for forgotten tools, old bicycles, and those boxes you've been meaning to sort through since 2005. For many, it's a place where dreams of DIY projects go to gather dust. But what if I told you that your garage is not just a storage unit, but a treasure trove of untapped potential? Now, I know what you're thinking. 'But my garage is a mess! It's dark, it's damp, and it's definitely not fit for habitation!' Ah, dear reader, that's where the magic of architectural expertise comes into play. With the right guidance, that cluttered space can be transformed into a haven of comfort and style. While the idea of converting your garage might seem daunting, it's not as Herculean a task as one might think. Yes, there are considerations to be made – insulation, ventilation, and building

regulations. But with the right team by your side, these challenges become mere stepping stones on the path to your dream space. And speaking of challenges, it's always wise to expect the unexpected. Just as in life, sometimes when you peel back the layers, you find a few surprises. Maybe it's an old structural issue or a forgotten time capsule from the 80s. But with a seasoned architect or builder to guide you, these surprises can be tackled with grace and humour. In these times, when space is at a premium and the world is changing rapidly, it's comforting to know that we can find sanctuary right under our noses. Garage conversions are not just about adding space; they're about enhancing the quality of our lives. They're about rediscovering the beauty in the familiar and making the most of what we have. So, the next time you look at your garage, see it not as a storage space, but as a canvas waiting for your vision. And who knows? That hidden gem might just be the best room in the house. www.robertsmillerredshaw.com

Investing for your children/grandchildren By Oliver Suter DipPFS, financial adviser

Investment solutions group photo

As children go back to school let’s look at the options available to invest for the benefit of children / grandchildren. Junior ISAs Anyone can pay into a JISA although only parents and guardians can set one up. Like all ISAs, the returns are tax free. You can choose between a cash JISA or a stocks & shares JISA and can contribute up to £9,000 each year. Money is held until the child reaches 18, after which it can be converted into an adult ISA. Pensions Children can have a pension. Setting one up can bring significant tax advantages since the government adds generous tax relief on contributions up to £3,600. Saving this way may help also mitigate an Inheritance Tax (IHT) liability. Trusts Trusts can be complicated but are often used to gift money to grandchildren/ children. If you have any questions about investing for children, please get in touch.

The value of investments can go down as well as up and you may not get back the full amount you invested. Capital at risk. ‘Investment Solutions’ is the trading name of Investment Solutions Wealth Management Ltd who are authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority.

Storrington Primary School Update for November 2023 Gardens - Produce is aplenty at school this term with our gardens full of vegetables such as tomatoes and greens. It is wonderful to see the children tending to the vegetables and harvesting them for use. They feel such a sense of achievement seeing the growing process from seed to plate. PGL - This month year 6 took part in the annual residential to PGL on the Isle of Wight. This is a fantastic opportunity for children to develop their team work and collaborative skills whist focusing on resilience and determination. Many of the children took part in activities out of their comfort zone and afterwards feel such

a sense of pride. Activities included, sailing, dragon boat racing, climbing and fencing. History visit - Romans came to Storrington with the year 4s enjoying an immersion day into the life and times of Romans. It was an excellent start to a favourite period of history. Harvest - The first half of Autumn term there is a focus on Harvest and supporting members of the community. 200 of our junior children visited St Mary’s church and were led by Cannon Katherine in celebrating Harvest. There were some confident performances of Harvest readings and poems by the children who enjoyed the experience of reading in the church.

Ashington Parish Council Update for November 2023 Wildflower Verges & Green Initiatives

Change of Venue for Parish Council Meetings

Thank you to everyone who responded to the proposals for growing wildflower verges along London Road. To date, 85% are in favour of the concept, and 15% against. Initially it is proposed to put several wildflower trial plots at the southern end of the road by The Red Lion. If the trial does extend along London Road at a later date, no work will be undertaken without consulting nearby households first.

All parish council meetings are now being held at Ashington CE School. Currently held on the 1st Thursday of the month, they will move to the 2nd Thursday from January 2024. All meeting dates for the remainder of the year and for 2024 can be found on our website “Meetings and Minutes” page as well as on our parish noticeboards.

We will also be trailing wildflower plots on parish council land near the church, using a variety of seed mixes. It is hoped between now and spring to locate other suitable areas. Along with other green initiatives currently being looked at, this will be a long-term project intended to cover the whole parish.

Skate Park The annual skatepark service has been undertaken and in response to various surfaces identified as being damaged or worn, work has been carried out to replace those sections. The surfaces have all had a coat of wood preserver and the park is looking good for another years use.

Storrington & Sullington Parish Council Update for November 2023 Overgrown Vegetation Our colleagues at West Sussex County Council Highways Department are receiving many complaints about overgrown trees, hedges and shrubbery which are causing obstacles for pedestrians around the parish. In places, the greenery is so far across the pavement that easy passage is very difficult and may require walkers to step into the roadway or duck down to pass through. Each case can take a lot of time to deal with as WSCC have to visit the area only to find that much of the offending greenery is on private land. The property owners are then requested to cut the vegetation back. If you have a property with an outer perimeter on the highway or area where people regularly walk (our many footpaths and twittens), please check your borders and deal with any overhang or obstructions that you find. “Brake” Road Safety Week (19-25 November) The Parish Council is keen to support Road Safety Week organised by Brake, the road safety charity. Washington Parish Council Update for November 2023 Rampion 2 Update: The process to consider a Development Consent Order (DCO) for the offshore windfarm expansion project with an onshore cable corridor is moving forward. As a first step, the Planning Inspectorate had to consider Adequacy of Consultation with communities affected by the proposals. Although reflecting concerns raised by parishes such as Washington, neither of the two district councils – Arun and Horsham – raised an outright objection, and so the application continues to progress. Members of the public and other interested parties have until 6th November to submit comments. Washington PC has submitted a letter of objection, reiterating residents’ concerns over the chosen cable route through the village and lack of any discussion or consultation regarding alternative routing. MP Andrew Griffith has also registered his concerns and what he believes has been an inadequate consultation with those communities affected by the proposals. These and other representations will be considered at preliminary hearings to be held within the coming weeks, to which members of the parish council will be invited to attend. Following this, the examination phase will commence, wherein the Planning Inspectorate has to decide whether to recommend the proposals for acceptance to the Secretary of State. Washington residents roundly rejected the proposed cable route through the village, ducted underneath the Recreation Ground/ Allotment plus associated access roads and compounds, at a public meeting in September 2021. The parish council has expressed support for renewable energy in principle but has repeatedly asked Rampion to look again at the various options to create a cable route that avoids the village, along the lines of its original plan (Route A). To view the Rampion 2 proposals and register as an ‘interested party’, go to the Planning Inspectorate website at: www.infrastructure.planninginspectorate.gov.uk Anyone wishing to be kept informed or to participate in the examination can register. Deadline for registration is 23:59 on 6th November 2023. If you are unable to register online, please call the helpline on: 0303 444 5000 to request a paper form.

A ‘Guide to the Application’ for the project can be viewed from the Rampion2 website page at: www.rampion2.com/the-project Planning Development: Horsham District council has conducted a series of meetings with parishes, to discuss the implementation of a new local plan for the district. A number of landowners have submitted sites for consideration, and HDC now has to decide which can go forward in the new plan. Some of the sites submitted are not in the joint Storrington, Sullington and Washington Neighbourhood Plan, and others have been specifically rejected in the NP previously. The NP Steering Committee has subsequently written to HDC, outlining its major concerns regarding sites under review. This follows the controversial planning consent granted recently at Old Clayton Kennels to build a 60-bed care home and eight private residences, despite previous rejection of the site in the Neighbourhood Plan. Rock Common Quarry: The determination date for the application to West Sussex County Council to infill the quarry had been postponed until 6th September, and has, at short notice, been postponed again. At the time of writing, no new date has been given. The application has attracted almost 400 public objections. Parish Notice Boards: The Parish Council is in the process of renewing its two main noticeboards at the Village Hall and at Pixie’s Corner (Heath Common). These, together with the board at John Ireland Way, Millford Grange, will in future be the only notice boards used to display parish agendas and other information. Join Us: We still have vacancies for councillors in both the Washington and Heath Common wards. If you care about the area in which you live, and would like to participate in helping to shape local policies and decisions in a non-political environment, please get in touch. For more information please phone 07776 771921 or email the Parish Office at clerk@washingtonparish.org.uk www.washingtonparish.org.uk

Storrington wardens Reporting anti-social behaviour Queries regarding Anti-Social Behaviour In an emergency, or if you feel threatened, call 999. In a non-emergency call 101 or report it online at www.sussex.police.uk using the ‘report’ tab. You will be given a crime number and feel free to share this as I Warden Chris have a good relationship with local PCSO and we will discuss how to resolve any issues that are reported. If you want to report an incident and remain anonymous, report online on crimestoppers-uk.org or by calling 0800 555 111. For anti-social driving or abandoned cars, please report to Operation Crackdown via: ww.operationcrackdown.org Storrington is a safe place to live, and the number of reports to the Police is low. However, it is the number of reports the Police receive that dictates their response, so please support your community by reporting incidents you witness.

ACCOUNTING

I’m asked if antisocial behaviour or other issues are police matters, how to report them and if I can report on their behalf. I can’t report an incident for you as I’m not a witness, but I can advise and discuss concerns. My advice is if you see or hear anything you feel is suspicious or worrying, report to the Police.
