Admissions open in September for Surrey Maths School - a new state-funded specialist maths school for gifted maths students aged 16-19, located in Guildford and serving the South East. Horsham District Council’s fleet of street cleansing vehicles can now benefit from new allelectric sweepers for Horsham’s town centre The electric sweepers will deliver a reduction in carbon emissions in line with the Council’s corporate priorities to tackle climate change, as it aims to become carbon neutral by 2030.
Two new audio walking tours allow people to explore the South Downs National Park in the footsteps of eminent 19th century archaeologist Augustus Pitt Rivers and 20th century Petersfield artist Flora Twort; the free downloadable phone apps connect landscape, stories, and historic sites to these influential figures who were inspired by the area's heritage and nature. Search for “In Their Footsteps” on either the Google Play or the Apple Store.
The South Downs National Park's ReNature initiative has raised over £5 million in two years to fund biodiversity projects, already creating over 400 hectares of new wildlife habitats and improving over 4,000 hectares of existing habitats to support nature's recovery in the region. See more at www.southdowns.gov.uk/renature.
Did you know that West Sussex libraries offer free public computer and internet access, designated quiet study spaces, and research resources, making them great study spaces in addition to borrowing books; more information from local branches or call 01243 642111.
Sussex-based charity, Safe Haven for Donkeys, has launched an appeal to provide the critical veterinary care needed for thousands of donkeys and mules working in the brick kilns in Egypt. The charity in Haywards Heath has been working with a medical team in Egypt for the past few months to bring much needed treatment to these animals who work tirelessly in the desert heat, despite their long-standing health issues and living in constant pain. More details of the charity at www.safehaven4donkeys.org
The Ourstory Archive at The Keep in Brighton shows how the UK's most popular international Pride Festival began as a small annual march against Section 28. Sometimes called Clause 28, this was the Conservative’s government’s response to the LGBTQ+ community’s demands for equality in the late 80s. Becoming law in 1988, it banned the ‘promotion’ of homosexuality by local authorities. The LGBTQ+ people of Brighton fought back, forming ‘Brighton Area Action Against Clause 28’ or BAAAC28.
The strength of the LGBTQ+ community in Brighton today has its origins, in part, in the activism and the endurance of BAAAC28. Labour repealed the law in 2003. www.thekeep.info.

Summer success for young equestrians
It has been a very busy summer few months for an equestrian team from Steyning Grammar School. On 11th June they came second at the Felbridge showground qualifying them for the national championships at Addington in October. Then on 30th June they competed at the prestigious All England jumping ground at Hickstead, followed by gaining a team first place at Coombelands Showground in July. Kitty Lovell placed second individually and Tilda Angell was eighth. Megan Duke rode a lovely clear round to help her team to first place. All the girls were
fantastic and all supported each other through the competitions. The team members pictured left to right at Hickstead are: Kitty Lovell (13); Tilda Angell (14); Tabitha Shillingford (12). Megan Duke (14); Storrington Conservation news

Writing a Will
By Will Writer Emma Cohen MIPW
Writing a Will is one of those tasks that often goes overlooked. However, the benefits of creating a Will extend far beyond just financial considerations. A Will acts as a powerful document that can provide peace of mind to loved ones and ensures the smooth transfer of assets after you have gone.
Crafting your Will enables you to have full control over the distribution of your assets after you die. By explicitly stating your wishes, you can ensure that any property, investments and personal belongings are distributed how you want. You will often hear me coin the phrase “Your Will, Your Way!” This can prevent confusion, reduce the likelihood of disputes and it can eliminate the need for expensive legal processes.
A Will is not just about assets though, it allows you to protect your loved ones in various ways. Guardianship provisions can be included to designate who will care for children, additionally, a Will can provide some security for elderly or dependent family members who require ongoing support.
There are also many options to leave financial help to the Charities closest to your heart.
The absence of a Will can leave loved ones in a difficult and emotionally challenging position. Having a roadmap in place can sometimes relieve them of the burden of making complex decisions during an already distressing time. It provides a clear set of instructions, making the estate settlement process smoother, faster, and less stressful. By avoiding intestacy laws, a Will also minimises unnecessary costs and preserves the value of the estate for your beneficiaries.
At Nsure we believe writing a Will is a responsibility that we should all embrace. Beyond the financial considerations, it allows you to take control of your legacy, protect the people who matter the most to you and alleviate difficult decisions after you have gone.

Table Talk Foundation
Creating a healthier future through food education
In the UK, Obesity accounts for over 30,000 deaths each year with obesity levels having more than doubled over the last decade. Today, one in three children leave primary school overweight or obese and children in deprived areas are more than twice as likely to be obese as their more privileged peers.
Sussex based charity, Table Talk Foundation has a two-pronged mission – namely to deliver high quality food education and provide children with an insight into the hospitality industry, and to also provide mental and physical health support and financial assistance to the local hospitality industry.
The charity’s co-founder, Jessica Aggarwal, (inset picture right) says, “We believe this health crisis requires immediate intervention. We exist to create a healthier future by helping young people build better relationships with food through innovative and fun food education.”
The charity is also keen to provide support for the hospitality industry, which was hard-hit by the COVID-19 pandemic and has continued to suffer from the increased cost of living crisis, rising operational costs, staff shortages and from meeting demands for increased sustainability arising from environmental concerns and climate change. “The hospitality industry is the UK’s third largest industry for employment and yet hospitality faced a staggering loss of £115 billon and over 660,000 jobs during the COVID19 pandemic. Hospitality businesses are three times more likely to fail compared to other UK businesses.” Jessica goes onto say that the charity believes that the hospitality industry plays a vital role in society. “We’re transforming the hospitality industry with a strong focus on mental wellbeing, physical health and financial support. We want to encourage more young people into careers in hospitality and support them every step of the way.”
All funds are spent directly in Sussex
The work of the Foundations is funded by a mix of grants, sponsorship and Industry Partnerships. Jessica expands on the roles each play in supporting the Foundation. “We have been fortunate enough to receive generous grants from several trusts and foundations committed to creating positive change. These include The
Band Trust, Enjoolata Foundation, Fonthill Foundation, Focus Foundation and The Lawson Trust. “Through the kindness and dedication of local people and businesses who’ve sponsored local schools, we've managed to raise over £20,000. These sponsorships not only provide vital funds but also help foster a sense of community around our mission.” Additionally, the charity is, Jessica says, “Proud to collaborate with hospitality businesses that have found creative ways to raise money through customer donations. Initiatives – like adding one pound to a bill or featuring a “Cocktail of the week” – have collectively raised over £43,000. The dedication of our Industry Partners exemplifies the spirit of the hospitality industry.”
Table Talk Business Club – offering monthly events in the best independent hospitality venues in Sussex
Table Talk Foundation also has a sister organisation and Community Interest Company: “Table Talk Business Club, has been instrumental in our fundraising efforts,” and is an exclusive club for executive-level owners and key decisionmakers holding monthly events at “The best independent hospitality venues in Sussex. These events not only raise awareness of our mission but also generate vital funds to support our ongoing work.”
Founded in 2021, the charity has grown extremely quickly - from a Summer Party thrown to launch its mission to a Festive Feast in December –raising £60,000 in its first year. In 2022, the organisation hosted “nine inspiring fundraising events, raising over £40,000 – generating awareness and excitement for the Foundation and

A word said, an action out of place, the opening of old wounds, none of which can be undone. Until now Gregor has woken every morning, quietly left to take the same train, and worked to pay off the family debt. But that world explodes on this morning of brutal metamorphosis.

our mission,” and March this year saw Sussex Showcase 2023 raise £22,500 for table Talk Foundation over seven days, “Fourteen chefs with twelve Michelin stars, two Great British Menu Winners and one Masterchef: The Professionals winner amongst them, collaborated to bring guests a one-of-a-kind food experience, in the most exciting restaurants Sussex has to offer.” Future events include a Christmas Party in December andSussex Showcase in March 2024. The charity is staffed by a combination of a small number of paid staff and volunteers – trustees as well as ad hoc volunteers who fundraise and help out at events - and is, Jessica tells me, now at capacity with current staffing levels. In 2024, the aim is to recruit another chef to grow the team and meet increasing demand.
“All this growth requires more funding so our main challenge will be to bring in more donations and partnerships to ensure we can keep moving forwards.”
Ensuring the generosity of the local people is put directly back into the immediate community.
When I ask how much support the charity receives from the local community, Jessica is emphatic. ”A lot! Our School Sponsorship, Industry
Partnerships and Table Talk Business Club members are predominantly Sussex based. Those attending our events and bidding at fundraising auctions are also mostly from Sussex. We believe in creating an ecosystem whereby the generosity of the local people is put directly back into the immediate community.”
The foundation also works with the Royal Academy of Culinary Arts’ Adopt a School Trust, which brings chefs and hospitality professionals into primary schools, helping children develop healthy eating habits, enthusiasm, interest in food and learn about the hospitality industry. to the Trust which sponsors the Foundation’s full-time Sussex-based chef and delivers food education across the Sussex region.
“I learnt so much and had such a fun time – this was the best day of school ever!” Brodie, aged 11 Table Talk Foundation has delivered food education to more than 30 schools and holiday clubs, helping over 1,200 children make informed choices and eat better, teaching skills and knowledge that will foster healthy choices throughout children’s lives. In 2022-2023 the Foundation, in partnership with Adopt a School Trust, raised £200,000 to build a bespoke training kitchen at Plumpton college. From where they can offer Chef on a Farm sessions that give children a hands-on farm-to fork experience. Jessica says, “Sessions started in May and we’ve been overwhelmed with positive feedback.”
“It was wonderful to see the children using the skills Chef John had taught them in a real kitchen. Being able to create their own lunch from scratch would have been the first time most of them would have experienced anything like it.”Primary School Deputy Head Teacher.
This year also saw the Foundation launch its Hospitality Training Programme, featuring eight
sessions and networking lunches. Entirely funded by charity fundraising, the programme is designed to develop critical skills, knowledge and industry connections to hospitality professionals in Sussex. Jessica says that feedback has been positive – with one hundred percent showing “an improved confidence rating in their ability to open safe conversations around mental health and to signpost appropriately.”
“I will be recommending that members of my management team attend future sessions.” –Restaurant

Table Talk Foundations believes that, “By defending the health of individual children and fighting for industry sustainability, we’re investing in a healthier, more prosperous society. A society that celebrates fresh, whole foods, the joy of cooking, cooking from scratch and a hospitality industry that serves its community and looks after the wellbeing of its employees.”

• 4-6 medium-large flat mushrooms
• 125g smoked bacon, cut into small pieces
• 1 banana shallot, finely chopped or whizzed in a food processor
• 1 garlic clove, crushed or use a food processor
• 4 tbsp rolled oats
• 1 tsp Carla’s rosemary seasoning
• 1 tsp Carla’s piri piri seasoning
• 50g Comté cheese, grated

1. Preheat the oven to 200c fan. Wipe any dirt from the mushrooms and remove the stalks, then finely chop the stalks, and set aside. Place the mushrooms on a baking tray flat side down.
2. Fry the bacon in a pan for 8-10 mins until starting to crisp, then add shallots, mushroom stalks, and garlic, fry for a further 5 minutes.
3. Remove from the heat and add the oats and seasonings to the pan, mix well so the pan juices start to absorb into the oats. Spoon the mixture into the hollows of the mushrooms and sprinkle with the grated Comté cheese.

Feel like you’re failing with your goals?
By Heather Smith
It’s hard to make changes consistently
In fact, most people I meet have a pretty good idea of what they need to do in order to reach their health and fitness goals, but struggle to put things into action.
Set yourself up to win!
When you feel stuck and as if changes just won’t stick, set yourself up to win.
Pick one thing you can do today which is so easy that it would be ridiculous not to do it.
Make yourself do whatever it is today, whether you feel like it or not. Then, count it as a win.
Maybe tomorrow you’ll feel like you can do a little more – or perhaps you feel you’re better to do the same thing again for a
few days before you add on any more. There’s no right answer. Setting things up so you win often is a great way to give yourself some positive experience with your goals.
When you win, you want to win again
Your goal becomes something you can successfully take steps towards, and not an unsurmountable task – and that makes the mental portion easier.
Never underestimate the power of taking small steps consistently. Things don’t have to be perfect for you to be winning.

Nutrition for children
Helping youngsters to make good food choices
Childhood is a particularly important period for forming positive behaviours related to nutrition. Children who learn and practise positive eating habits from an early age are likely to make healthy choices when they grow up. Here we explore some ways to help promote positive eating behaviours: stick to regular meal and snack times.
• A regular eating pattern that forms the basis of a healthy, balanced diet
• Providing three meals, and two or three snacks a day is ideal for children
• Keeping mealtimes regular creates predictability and encourages a healthy appetite
• Set a good example
In the long term, children and young adults are more likely to learn from how we behave rather than what we tell them. The more we can be a role model about healthy eating habits the better! Set an example to your child by showing them how you make healthy choices and how you practice positive eating habits; this could be
something as simple as choosing to eat a wide variety of foods, or by ensuring you drink plenty of water. Also, family mealtimes offer an excellent opportunity to teach children good eating patterns as well as a time to connect and talk to each other.
Children love to get involved in new things, so why not get them to help in the kitchen? Cooking with kids and getting them involved in the meal preparation process may encourage them to try new healthy foods. Small children could be responsible for setting the table, any mixing or stirring and washing fruit and vegetables. Older children could get involved with preparing the shopping list, chopping, and peeling! For more information and tips including healthy recipes, visit www.heartresearch.org.uk

Taking your dog in the car
Advice on how to travel safely with your dog
UK motorists are being reminded that dogs must be properly restrained when travelling by car or risk breaking the law. The Highway Code states pets should be “suitably restrained” but what's best practice for you and your pooch?
Use a harness or crate to keep your dog safe and prevent roaming around the car. Regular stops are a must on long journeys - your dog will appreciate the chance to stretch their legs and relieve themselves. Have water and your dog's usual food handy too
Help your pet relax by taking their favourite toy and only travel to fun places to create positive associations. Be mindful of motion sickness and try to minimise it by positioning your dog to face forward. Don't let your dog hang out the window
as horrific injuries can occur from passing vehicles. Disable front airbags if securing your dog in a front seat harness. And never leave a dog alone in a warm car - heat stroke can arise rapidly.
Other don'ts include opening windows fully as your dog may leap out and feeding your dog just before travelling to avoid tummy upsets. Following these simple rules will ensure your dog is properly restrained, safe and comfortable on car journeys - long or short. Your pet's welfare must be a top priority so do your research on travel accessories and plan your trip around their needs. With a little care and preparation, car travel with your dog can be stress-free and even fun. Just be sure to always adhere to the Highway Code. Painted lady migration patterns and other migratory insects:
Every year, Southern England becomes the stage for a remarkable sight when 3.5 trillion flying insects, equalling the weight of 20,000 reindeer, migrate across the country! Among these in-sects are the Painted Lady butterflies, the subject of a recent discovery among scientists and butterfly enthusiasts.
The Painted Lady butterfly (Vanessa cardui) has a 4-7.3cm wingspan and often populates dry open areas. Every spring they journey from their overwintering grounds in North Africa and the Mediterranean region to the UK, Asia and Northern Europe. These butterflies obtain average altitudes of 500m, can reach 30mph in favourable conditions, and can do a 9000-mile round trip from Africa to the Arctic Circle! For many years it was a mystery where Painted Lady butterflies went in the autumn, whether they died in the UK or made a return journey, as they fly at such a high altitude and could not be seen by butterfly observers. It was recently discovered that the Painted Lady butterflies do make a return journey in autumn, returning to favourable temperatures further South.
These butterflies are unique due to their migration being the longest-ever recorded flight for butterflies. These migrations can take generations, as they lay their eggs in the UK, and the offspring continue the migration South to southern Europe and North Africa, although not all participate, and some may not survive the harsh UK winters. As they undertake continuous, year-round mating, painted ladies are able to stop, breed and die at locations along the migration route.
Staib
How do they know when to start the migration?
The caterpillars of Painted Ladies grow while the days are lengthening, to then fly northwards, and when the days shorten the butterflies know to travel south to warmer climates.
Painted Ladies are the only butterflies found in Iceland and since the 1970’s their population has increased by 32%! In the UK they feed on, amongst other plants, Teasels, Ivy, Ragwort, Heather and Hawkweed.
Although the migration of Painted Lady butterflies is one of a kind, other migratory insects are worth keeping an eye out for.
Sometimes we experience mass migrations of insects in summer and autumn. Between 10 and 25 billion medium and large insects move back and forth out of regions in Britain. This includes hoverflies for example, where 4 billion come to and from Britain each year, and they are essential for pollination and natural pest control.
Mass migrations truly can be a shocking sight, for example in World War 2, military observers reported a ‘golden ball’ drifting over the channel and thought it was poison gas, only for it to be migrating Clouded Yellow butterflies.

Painted lady butterfly
We also host other insects on their migratory journeys, such as the Red Admiral. This butterfly is extremely common in spring and throughout summer too, usually spotted near flowers such as Buddleia. They make their journey from North Africa and continental Europe, arriving in the UK in Spring. They lay their eggs in the UK, meaning new butterflies are around from July onwards.
We also host Hummingbird Hawkmoths in Spring, which usually live in Central Asia and in the Mediterranean region. They are named for their similarity to hummingbirds, feeding on nectar using their long beaks. Hummingbird Hawkmoths have very good memories, and often return to the same flowerbeds every day at the same time. They breed in the UK, and due to their inability to survive the winter they make return migrations in Autumn.
If you are lucky enough, you might be able to spot a Monarch Butterfly which makes occasional, sporadic appearances in the UK. It is believed that strong winds may carry individual Monarch butterflies across the Atlantic Ocean
into the UK. They’re native to the US and can fly up to 100 miles per day. Migratory insects that visit the UK undertake incredible journeys driven by instinct and environmental cues, playing an important role in pollination, pest control,

Where to go in September
September tasks
• Watering - keep up in sustained hot weather. For years now we have been having sunny and dry Septembers

A new study conducted by conveyancing solicitors, Bird & Co, has uncovered the most popular regions to live in West Sussex, having analysed Office of National Statistics net migration figures.
The study breaks down the stats by County and includes statistics on net internal migration, average house prices and the average ages of people migrating to the region.
According to migration data, people moving to West Sussex are moving to:

In West Sussex, the majority of the population is below the age of 40, except for the district of Arun, where a significant proportion falls within the 65-69 age group.
The study also looked at the most popular counties in England and Wales, revealing the most popular places to move to. West Sussex came 7th whilst neighbouring Hampshire was in 1st place. Full report on: www.birdandco.co.uk

Should you top up your state pension?
By Oliver Suter DipPFS, financial adviser
To qualify for the full State Pension, you need to have 35 years on your NI record. To qualify for any State Pension, you need 10 years.
The government’s state pension forecast can show you the amount you could receive from the State Pension and when you can claim it.
If you have a gap in your NI record, you may be able to top up your contributions and receive a greater income from the State Pension. The government scheme to make voluntary National Insurance contributions going back as far as the 2006/07 tax year has been extended. It will now run until 5 April 2025.
The potential risks of topping up your state pension are that you may die before recouping the
costs,
and that you may face additional taxation,

New support group & travel buddy scheme
New support group
This month I am starting a new support group, with a colleague from Ashington, for families who have children with Autism Spectrum Disorder or Special Educational Needs. We both have family members with autism and know how important it is to be able to talk and share. We recently visited some ‘Umbrella’ support groups and feel that there is a need for a group locally.
The first meeting will be on Tuesday 19th September from 10am – 11.30am at the Village Hub on North Street, Storrington (next to One Stop). There will be refreshments and a chance to chat, rant, and talk about the daily struggles. We have also invited some experts, to give advice on what help andservices are available.
Travel Buddy
On my patrols around the village, I’ve noticed that some residents are socially isolated and
need some assistance to get out and about. I now have the details of a scheme that will potentially help. The Travel Buddy scheme is a service that empowers those who are socially isolated to live as independently as possible in their community. Residents simply complete an application form and an appointment will be made to come and chat about their needs. They are then paired with a volunteer, who will assist them to get to social settings, activities, shopping and wellbeing activities.
For more information, please email the scheme co-ordinators at: travelbuddy@ctsussex.org.uk
I look forward to having a chat when I see you out and about. Chris: 07795 046743

A brand new care home in Tarring
Tarring Manor - 75 rooms plus cinema, hair
The increasing age of the population and the issues surrounding senior care are widely discussed. People are living longer and whereas some are fortunate to be able to care for themselves well into old age, others will require specialist nursing and personal care.
Tarring Manor Care Home opens during September and is the latest in a chain of family owned care homes across the country. Karen Grainger, a long time Worthing local, is the Home Manager and has worked at Caring Homes for over ten years. Originally Karen trained as a Registered General Nurse in the Royal Air Force.
Karen spoke to us about Tarring Manor and the care provided. She explained, “The needs of the individual are pivotal and residents are encouraged to be as independent as possible. As well as providing healthcare and person care, extra support is available for those who are able to enjoy days out and local activities. Karen continued, “We believe the best care comes from a genuine interest in people. The care team are
interests, former lives, little quirks and preferences which really helps us to offer a fulfilling and dignified later life experience.”
Community involvement and promoting intergenerational relationships are also supported and local Scouts, Guides and school children, as well as residents’ families of course, are always welcome to visit. Residents of this new 75 bedroom establishment will be able to enjoy facilities such as a cinema, bistro and hair salon with activities including arts and crafts, baking and gardening designedto sustain well-being into the later years.

Volunteers at the heart of the community Community minibus service calling for volunteers
West Sussex Minibus is a community transport charity that helps individuals to thrive. Their mission is to enable residents to stay active and foster a strong sense of belonging to prevent isolation and loneliness.
They provide a range of practical shopping trips and social outings throughout the year. It is a membership-based service that welcomes all age groups. Eight divisions service the county, each operating buses seating up to 8 passengers to keep the service personal and friendly. For many members, the service is a lifeline, providing the chance to stay in touch with friends, visit new places and gain companionship.
As an all-volunteer organisation, West Sussex Minibus owe their continued success to those individuals who offer their skills and time. People volunteer for many reasons. A change in personal circumstances is where it often begins. If you are active, enjoy meeting people and have spare time, that’s all that is needed. One of the following roles may be a perfect start to volunteering.
Minibus Drivers pick members up from their homes, drive them safely to the planned destination and return. Drivers need to be confident and hold a D1 category licence.
Passenger Escorts work alongside the driver. They welcome members to each trip, collect fares and assist passengers throughout the trip.
Communication Co-ordinator to help promote awareness of the service through local publications and social media channels.
Everyone who joins understands what an essential role they play and will help to ensure the retention of vital services for the local community. To learn more about volunteering with West Sussex Minibus, Storrington and Ashington, please call 0300 772 7735.

Andrew Griffith MP
MP for Arundel & South Downs, September update
Railway ticket office closures
I know that many in our community rely on the railways, myself included as a regular commuter to Westminster. The rail industry is currently consulting on the closure of ticket offices and instead deploying the staff out onto platforms to help customers – including at Arundel, Pulborough, Hassocks, Barnham, Angmering, Petersfield and Haslemere stations. Making sure the most vulnerable can still receive the assistance they need and that our questions at stations can
be answered is absolutely key. I submitted a response to the industry’s consultation, and I look forward to the conclusions of the call for views.
Planning reform
I know that for many local residents, unsustainable development on the green places that surround our villages and small towns is a significant concern. For that reason, I am pleased that last week we received positive news on planning reform that will prevent unsustainable housebuilding whilst still delivering the affordable homes that future generations need.
The key measures that the Government announced were a shift to focus on building in urban centres, to brownfield development and to protect green spaces. It means development will be focussed on cities such as London, Cambridge and Manchester and see them grow upwards rather than outwards – something that I advocated in my very first speech in Parliament. These are looking lovely as always, with red, white and blue flowers to commemorate the Coronation. As well as looking after the baskets, our contractor Mark also maintains the parish owned green spaces, pond areas, trees and hedges. We are grateful for his commitment and dedication to making sure our village looks well kept.

Land West of Ashington School
At time of writing, we have not received a decision regarding this proposed development. However, we note that consultation documents are still being submitted, with many of those bodies objecting to the application in its current form, highlighting the issues that the parish council have raised in their own objection.
