St Philips Primary Years 5 and 6 are participating in weekly Hockey sessions. The children are able to take part safely in their ‘bubbles’ and are enjoying learning new skills. Music lessons are also taking place. It is lovely to hear the sound of the piano, guitar and xylophones echoing through the school. Year 3 have been on the first school trip of the year, they visited Butser Farm. Focus days also feature regularly at St Philips. Year 2 recently had a ‘Space Day’ and Year 1 had a ‘Winter Writing Day’. The children wore their Winter woolly pyjamas and spent the day in immersive learning with reading and writing as the key feature. Their classroom was converted to a Winter Wonderland and they finished the day with hot chocolate and marshmallows. If your child is due to start Reception Class in September 2021, you will be looking at schools to list as your three choices in readiness to submit to WSCC admissions team. Please take a look at our school pictures and information on the school website www.stphilipsarundel.org.uk

Tansy, the ‘Shepherd girl from Burpham’ By Mark Phillips It was in this sleepy village that Tansy the Shepherd Girl was ‘born’ in 1914. Well when I say ‘born’ in, I should perhaps say that Tickner wrote ‘Tansy’ while living in Burpham. Some believe that she was based on a real person, long since lost to history. Tickner’s Tansy, the novel, was turned into a silent film in 1921 and although the story is set around the rolling hills of the Devon countryside, it was shot in and around Burpham which in the story was known as Goldringham. Houses became settings in the film and extras were made up of locals and farmworkers. It had a large release for its time and was shown in over 15,000 cinemas. The film was produced by Cecil Hepworth and starred Alma Taylor, a very well-known actress of the time, as Tansy. Alma is often said to have been Britain’s first true film star and was compared at the time to the great Canadianborn actress Mary Pickford. In the story, Tansy is a shepherd’s granddaughter who is adored and mistreated by the men in her life. There are several wonderful scenes of farmworkers, shepherds, village buildings – some long demolished. My personal favourite is the authentic sheep dipping scene; authentic as the ‘actors’ in it were the local farmworkers themselves. History does not tell us if they were paid for their part.

Author of the book - Rev Tickner Edwardes - along with Alma Taylor who played Tansy in the film.

In the churchyard of St Mary The Virgin in the small village of Burpham can be found the last resting place of the Rev Edward Tickner Edwardes, once known as the ‘Thomas Hardy of Sussex’, who died at 79 in 1945. Edward, who preferred to use his middle name of Tickner, moved to Burpham from London with his family, became vicar there in 1927 and remained so until he retired in 1935. Tickner appears to have been well liked and respected by his flock and became better known through his writings about the history and legends of the village such as ‘A Year's Life in and about an English Village’(1911). His earlier books on bee keeping were held in high esteem and titles such as ‘Bee Keeping for all’ (1923) and especially ‘Lore of the Honey Bee’ (1908) soon became a must-have in the collection of all serious apiarists.

Although a silent film, which at the time would have been accompanied all the way through with mood music played by the cinema pianist, occasional ‘scene setting’ title cards have been added which help the viewer to follow the plot. The opening scene and the wording are pure nostalgia, magic of a bygone era that sets the tone of the film: ‘On the gentle slopes of the Devon countryside, an old shepherd passes the evening of his days...’ *Although the film is not generally available to the public, there have been a few showings of it over the past few years in Burpham and Arundel.
