My dad, Bill, had been living with advanced prostate cancer. But David with mum (Joan) and dad (Bill) as his condition advanced, it was clear he was approaching the end of his life. The medical care and knowledge he received from St Barnabas was extraordinary, and everyone made a huge fuss of dad. It was coming up to his 90th birthday and the nurses piled into his room and we sang ‘Happy Birthday’ together. Dad lived for 10 more weeks and the Hospice at Home team came out to him every day. In those precious weeks we got to sit, talk and share favourite family stories. It was a dignified, peaceful, even beautiful death. A few days later, my mum, Joan discovered she had advanced liver and lung cancer, and she only had weeks to live. It was a huge shock for all of us and, once again, St Barnabas came to the rescue. The hospice team bent over backwards to find mum a bed and we found ourselves back in those familiar, bright surroundings once more. Mum lived for only five weeks following her diagnosis, and she was cared for by the same wonderful nurses who’d come to know dad so well. Looking back, the overwhelming memory I have is of being surrounded by kindness. Will you join me in making a gift to St Barnabas House this Christmas? Visit www.stbh.org.uk/christmasappeal

Worthing Pavilion Worthing Pier's art deco Southern Pavilion is set to be brought back into use after plans for an extensive refurbishment got the go ahead. Worthing Borough Council agreed a deal with the team that operates The Perch in Lancing to take over the lease on the landmark 1930s building last year. Since then, the new owners have spent time drawing up plans to revamp the interior of the building and create a new enlarged kitchen within the Grade II Listed pavilion, with hopes to reopen as soon as possible.

Worthing town centre plans Ambitious plans to regenerate Worthing’s town centre have been given a major boost with the approval of proposals to create nearly 170 homes, commercial space, hotel and expanded cinema on a brownfield site. Also included in the proposal is replacement public car parking, highquality public spaces and a new play area.

Temporary cycleways will now be removed The Government-funded, temporary cycleways in Crawley, East Grinstead, Horsham, Shoreham and Worthing are to be removed, it has been decided. When the Government funding was awarded and the cycleways’ construction started, the country was just emerging from the first national lockdown. However, since then, the Government has continued to provide additional funding for local public transport and traffic has significantly increased, so the pop-up cycle lanes are no longer needed for their original purpose.

Motoring News from across the industry Drivers dislike driving in the dark Nearly a third (29%) of UK motorists – over 14 million drivers – get nervous when driving in the dark, according to new research by SEAT UK. With the days now at their shortest, many drivers will have to make more trips in the dark. Glampervanning trend takes hold A new trend for “glampervanning” is on the rise this winter as Brits look for inventive ways to staycation with loved ones whilst adhering to lockdown restrictions. A survey of 2,000 UK adults, commissioned by Auto Trader has revealed that 71% of Brits who are thinking about taking a holiday this winter would consider staying in a luxury caravan or motorhome. The data also reveals a 156% year on year rise in advert views for top end models (costing £50,001-£100,000).

Don't veer for Deer Road safety organisation GEM Motoring Assist is urging drivers to take extra care in areas where deer are common. The rutting (or breeding) season means deer are more mobile than usual, bringing them onto roads and increasing the risk of collisions. Experts believe the UK deer population numbers more than two million, and research from the RSPCA shows around 75,000 deer are involved in vehicle collisions each year, with 10,000 killed instantly. The human death toll from deer collisions ranges between 10 and 20 annually, while industry estimates put the cost of damage to vehicles alone to be at least £11 million. GEM states, "Ideally we want to avoid any sort of collision, but swerving to avoid a deer could prove a very dangerous if it leads to a collision with another vehicle".

42 Parish Councils

Findon Parish Council WSCC councillor, Findon village hall, seagull nuisance & planning Edited extracts from the draft minutes of the Parish Council Meeting held on 14th September 2020. WSCC councillor An update from the WSCC Cllr reported the following items. The bid for the combined cycle and footpath along the A24 had been submitted and was awaiting progression from government; a Solar Together scheme had been launched; the new fire station and training centre based in Horsham was discussed; and the two government planning consultations from the government had raised a lot of concerns. Clarity was needed on the level of protection for National Parks and the impact of affordable housing in rural areas. Findon village hall The Chairman reported that he would be meeting the architects and expected to receive a summary of the works already completed, an outline of the works still needed; and a tender document for those works. The Chairman attended the recent Findon Village Hall Trust Committee meeting. The Committee had reviewed potential booking viability (subject to COVID 19 restrictions) and

had completed a risk assessment. Seagull nuisance Photos that had previously been circulated to Councillors clearly demonstrated the effect of the seagulls from a noise, damage and environmental health perspective. It was resolved that the Clerk would contact Arun District Council Environmental Health department to investigate and resolve the issue. Planning The Committee Chairman referred to the South Downs National Park Authority (SDNPA) Enforcement Officer email (as previously circulated to councillors) regarding the outstanding Condition regarding fencing at 1 Ivy Arch Close. The quote from specialists Action in Rural Sussex (AiRS) for the Local Housing Needs Survey (LHNS) was discussed and the postal survey option was agreed. Councillors were reminded that the SDNPA now require a parish LHNS to be less than two years old when taken into account for planning applications. www.findonparishcouncil.gov.uk
