12 Arundel Festival

All the town’s a stage There’s so much going on at this year’s Arundel Festival from Saturday 20th - Monday 29th August – with events ranging from the gastronomical to the cerebral, and plenty in between Of course, acting outside brings its challenges – “we don’t want it to rain!” And for actors more used to television or radio work, projection can be a challenge – although since the audience for Shakespeare in the Collector Earl’s Garden has grown to more than 800, some microphones are mounted in the performance area to ensure those at the back can hear what’s going on.

This year’s Arundel Festival is a nine-day arts extravaganza, during which old favourites and exciting new events combine to offer something for all audiences. West Sussex’s fabulous producers and restaurants will be centre stage for the roaming restaurant trail and vineyard tours, while dramatic dragon boat racing on the River Arun provides a thrilling crescendo to the festival. This is the second festival organised by the present committee. But it was Shakespeare who started the whole thing. In 1977 a performance of one of his plays in Arundel Castle’s Tilting Yard, staged to raise money for the town’s Silver Jubilee celebrations, was a sell-out success. The next year was the same story. So, in 1979, Arundel Festival was born, with a production of Twelfth Night at its heart. Thirty seven later the Bard is still a big part of the community event – this year’s plays, performed in the Collector Earl’s Garden, are the much-loved tragedy Romeo and Juliet and pastoral comedy As You Like It. Barrie Palmer, co-owner of GB Theatre Company which has brought Shakespeare’s plays to life outdoors since 2010, says the prospect of performing at Arundel Castle is a major enticement to his actors. Barrie, a former police officer who became an actor at the age of 51, says: “We do Shakespeare as he did it himself – we are following that tradition.”

everybody is so nice!”

The company performs throughout the summer at venues up and down the country (there are also performances in East Sussex, at Alfriston and Herstmonceux), but Arundel is a favourite: “It is such a beautiful place and

In this special year for Shakespeare fans, as we commemorate the 400th anniversary of his death, seeing these two plays in such beautiful surroundings will be a real delight.

High Drama The festival’s fabulous Drip Action Theatre Trail is now in its 16th year. The premise is simple: eight plays are performed over eight days in eight different venues. Local crime novelist Simon Brett, famous for his Charles Paris and Fethering mysteries, kicks things off with his play Reading at 11am each day of the festival at Arundel Town Hall, while the final drama of the evening – Lindsey Williams’ Deliver Me O Lord – is at 6pm at the Jailhouse. Eight day-seasons for 20-27 August are £30 and tickets can be bought on the door (£5/£3 students), space permitting.

Dancing in the Streets The weekend street entertainment element of the festival is bigger and better than ever, thanks to a grant from Arundel Town Council. Attractions include: magician Nick Stein; comedian and juggler Dan the Hat; folk band Renegade Dogs and a traditional Punch and Judy show. There will also be a steel band, morris dancers, pop choir and stilt-walkers to enjoy, as well as much more.

will lay bare a grisly 20th century murder trial and ask the audience to reach a verdict over a glass of wine. Arundel Festival is generously supported by Christ’s Hospital. For more information on all of the events, visit www.arundelfestival.co.uk

Home is where the art is The Arundel Gallery Trail celebrates local talent in more than 65 venues. More than 150 artists and makers are taking part, including sculptors, painters, printers, ceramicists, photographers and jewellers. Visitors have the unique opportunity of meeting and talking to the artists themselves whilst discovering many of Arundel's period homes. Wander from venue to venue at your own pace during the 10-day period (entry is free). Look out for the red and yellow venue flags or pick up a trail guide from any of the venues. In Your Garden Monthly gardening ideas and tasks by Andrew Staib of Glorious Gardens If not you could think about a Rose covered Arbour, a live Willow chamber, creating a canopy with a weeping feature tree or a Summer house with a fridge full of cold drinks - you can even get lovely ‘Gypsey’ wooden caravans on line. You could even create a room with hedging inside your garden where you can sit and connect back to yourself away from the tugs of war of daily life! Step 3. Can you introduce curved paths and classical shapes like old pots and vases that give your space a gravity that hints of a time gone by, or the time that is timeless.

Creating more Romance in your Garden and therefore in your Life. Design a Romantic Garden for Yourself... Is your garden looking stale with barren or empty areas? Is it a place that continually invites you into its’ arms? Can your garden reflect the values you have about life and what is important? If not why not suffuse it with more romance? A place where lovers meet, a space to let yourself be overwhelmed with the sensuality of nature and where mysterious nooks and crannies can lead to a meditation on beauty and impermanence! Step 1. Are all your 5 senses delighted?  The fragrance of climbing Roses, Chamomile paths and Lavender.  The sound of gushing water and the wind in tall grasses.  The furry touch of Lamb’s Ear and glossy Fatsia leaves.  The sight of Romantic colour combinations.  The taste of Grapes, Fennel, Apples and Chives. Step 2. For a trist with your loved one or to feel your love of nature in quiet contemplation ask yourself: is the seating cosy with a sense of intimacy.

Step 4. Can you let your romantic planting design be more relaxed and spontaneous like a summer party where the guests are slightly tipsy and people merrily bump into each other?

16 Gardening

SUSSEX LOCAL you can chat about more important things than the broken dishwasher.

Where to go in August This is your very last chance to see Chiltern Lodge this year. An exquisite garden developed by Lady Collum for over 40 years, it features a series of interlocking rooms, each one with a different purpose and feel- a herb garden, pool room, water rill room and classical sandstone summer house. Look to abundant planting like tall ornamental grasses, Allium heads, Day Lillies , the scrabble of Nasturtiums and wild Geraniums. You can let your Wysteria be a bit more wild, let Roses climb up all the big trees and drainpipes, allow great heavy headed Peonies to flop about without stakes, and intersperse the planting with intense bright colour spots of Poppies, Delphiniums and Phlox- and of course lots of shrub Roses. To create a Romantic garden you need to ask yourself ‘what does love look like?’ -and then make this happen! A beautiful water feature reflecting the still heart of all things, a hot coloured flower border full of passion and generosity, a well crafted seat for two tucked away from the house catching the evening sun where

The garden is lovingly tended with an eye for detail and simple colour palettes. It is open to the public just a few days of the year so put the date in your diary now. Only day left this year Monday 5th August 2-5.30pm Fletchling, East Sussex TN22 3ST

What to do in August Obviously keep up the watering in sustained hot weather Top up the mulch to retain moisture and keep weeds down (don’t forget they kept on growing until Xmas last year!) Keep pinching out your tomatoes and sowing new rills of lettuce, radishes and spinach

Time to prune the bigger shrubs that have just finished flowering like Wygelia, Philadelpus, and Sprirea- cut out the old flowering wood back to new growth that next year’s flowers will bloom from Mow your lawn on a higher setting now to keep moisture in the grass to help mitigate against summer browning in dry spells Apply a nitrogen feed if Red Thread fungus is taking over your lawn

The 1644 print of Arundel by Wenceslas Holler (1607-1677) By Mark Phillips Wenceslas Hollar

artistic license that appears to have been used, it is the oldest known view of the town and contains some historically important features. The most obvious feature is that of the castle before its major rebuild at the end of the 1800’s but there are some smaller images we can identify such as the old Parsonage building one can see in front of the Parish Church. The circled small church-like building on the left is quite possibly the precursor to the Eagle brewery and is on the line of Tarrant Street. I have a Bill of Sale from way back in 1801 that refers to the brewery even then as ‘The old brewery’ which would indicate there was likely to have been a brewery on this site for at least a few generations. If you look closely you will see that the building in the image is not a single gabled roof but in fact a double one. The next circled building to the right is the high status Nineveh house that stood on the site in Tarrant Street where the Congregational chapel was built in c1838. This house is believed to have been built in c1420 by the Earl of Arundel, John FitzAlan. In the early 1700’s records show that part of the house was used at The Star Inn as well as small retail outlets. However, it was finally demolished around c1833 because of its dilapidated condition.

In 1636 Wenceslas Hollar’s fine artwork and prints attracted the attention of Thomas Howard, 21st Earl of Arundel. Employed as a draftsman he travelled with the Earl to Vienna and Prague returning with him to England in 1637. Although much of his work was commissioned by Lord Arundel, he did not work exclusively for him and in later years, earned his living by working for various authors and publishers including the Duke of York. During the English Civil War Hollar based himself in Antwerp where he produced many of his most renowned works. It is doubtful if he ever actually visited Arundel and the preliminary sketch of the town was likely prepared for him by one of his agents. It would have been a brave man who made these initial sketches considering it was during the time of the English Civil war when the town was occupied. I have always found this Arundel print by Holler absolutely fascinating and regardless of the

The third circled area on the right is believed to be the old long narrow Court House that was located in the centre of the High Street by the current war memorial. Because it was allowed to fall into a ruinous state by the town ‘Corporation’, an early type of ‘closed shop’ Council, a new Court House was proposed and the old one was demolished around c1741 followed by some adjacent buildings in c1773. However, because one house owner stubbornly refused to sell, a new Court House was never built on this site. Records show that in 1793 Town Council business was taking place in the sacristy of the neglected Fitzalan Chapel until the Duke finally ‘persuaded’ them to move out in return for a brand new town hall that was built at the top of Maltravers Street in c1834-35 and is still used to this day. Volunteers, including pupils from the two Arundel schools, will collect photographs, newspaper clippings, documents, letters and photos, as well as family stories, to help them build a clear picture of how local people got involved with the daily work and management of the hospital and how they supported it through fundraising and entertaining the convalescent servicemen. The information gathered will be digitally recorded and made freely available on the Arundel Museum website. www.hlf.org.uk/thenandnow

South Downs Farmer Finalist Dominic Gardner of Lee Farm, Angmering Park has been nominated as a finalist for the Farming and Wildlife Advisory Group’s national Silver Lapwing Award. The Award celebrates the e n v i r o n m e n t a l achievements of farmers, recognising outstanding efforts to promote wildlife and good habitat management on their farms. Lee Farm stretches to nearly 3,000 acres of the South Downs National Park and is farmed with the Angmering Park Estate. Dominic manages his chalk soils sustainably by bringing in large quantities of waste product and by integrating his sheep flock into his arable rotation, utilising modern technology to optimise margins whilst protecting the numerous heritage assets on this part of the Downs. The team is busy restoring chalk grassland and there is provision for winter food and habitat for farmland birds. Contact: FWAG, 01823 660684 Email, info@fwagsw.org.uk www.fwagsw.org.uk

Brexit, Flooding, By-Pass Local councils have taken the brunt of austerity cuts and Arun District is in the process of having to £4 million from our budget by 2020, on top of previous cuts it’s a big ask, but let’s hope we don’t get additional cuts due to Brexit. The Environment Agency (EA) has been doing its best to wriggle out of commitments to flood defences in the Lower Tidal River Arun Strategy Phase 1 works, which was being delivered in partnership with West Sussex County Council, The EA, Arundel Town Council and Arun District. It’s clear that, over the last twenty years the EA has not maintained the walls in Arundel to the level that they should have done. They now have a catch up requirement and they are trying to dilute the Phase 1 works. As an Arun District Cabinet Member flooding is not my responsibility, but I have a say and I think we should hold the EA to their commitment to complete the Phase 1 defences. Thanks, from all Arundel residents, should go to Derek Waller who advises the Town Council, keeps a watching brief on flooding developments and does a lot of work lobbying representatives and advising us. Derek also advises the Town Council in regard to the By-Pass. Consultation on the route will begin early in 2017, the previous preferred route (Pink Blue route)

SUSSEX LOCAL seems to be the best one, and I think the consultation should be only for Arundel and surrounding village residents - many Brighton residents seem to think they have a more important say than Arundel residents. I know some residents want an online solution, but do you really want a dual carriageway through Arundel? My judgement is that that option and the Binsted one are equally the worst routes. However, if the Pink Blue route is given the go ahead we will also need a package of mitigating measures, cycle paths, sustainable transport solutions, remodeling of streetscape of the old A27, and a dead end for Ford Road to stop through traffic. Until next month. Paul Dendle is Arundel & Walberton ward and Cabinet member on Arun District Council. Email cllr.paul.dendle@arun.gov.uk www.pauldendle.org

Sussex Wildlife Trust Appointment Carole Nicholson is the first woman to hold the post of Chairman of the Sussex Wildlife Trust - the largest nature conservation organisation in the county. Five a day - fruit & veg. Their benefits and ways to help you increase your intake Fruit and vegetables are so important to our wellbeing, as part of a healthy and balanced diet. Fruit and vegetables have many beneficial and essential nutrients for your body including vitamins and minerals, which are vital to maintain our bodily function. It is important to include variety when selecting fruit and vegetables, as different fruits and vegetables each contain different vitamins and minerals, nutrients and fibres. Fruit and vegetables are also beneficial as they are an excellent source of fibre, which helps to maintain a healthy gut and prevent constipation and digestion problems. Fibre also helps you feel full and keeps you fuller for longer due to its digestion rate. Fruit and vegetables are also mostly low in fat and calories, so

27

including them in your daily diet can help you maintain a healthy weight. The phrase, to eat five fruit and vegetables a d ay , means try to eat at least five fruit and vegetables in total each day, as this amount can prove beneficial for your health. This recommendation is based on advice from the world health organisation, suggesting this will then lower the risk of serious health problems, such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes and obesity. If you are looking for ways to increase your daily intake, here are a few ideas: Keep a variety of different fruit and vegetables to hand, and try to vary your cooking method ie: baking, stirfrying, stewing and steaming are some suggestions. In the morning: Add chopped fruit to breakfast cereals, porridge or low fat yoghurt. Try a handful of berries or a chopped banana. Add mushrooms or tomatoes to scrambled eggs. Have a banana, for breakfast or a snack or homemade smoothies or natural juice. When making smoothies keep in all the edible-pulped fruit or vegetable to contain all the fibre it provides. For snacks: Snack with fruit or raw veg between meals. Have a bowl of raw, chopped veg in the fridge such as carrots, broccoli, celery sticks, and peppers, with dips such as salsa, reduced fat hummus or lower -fat cheese spread. Snack on apples, Clementines, pears or Satsumas. For lunch: Add some crunch to your sandwiches with lettuce, tomatoes, cucumber or grated carrots. Also have fruit with your lunch. For dinner or tea: Add vegetables, frozen, fresh or canned to soups, stews and
sauces. Add beans, lentils and pulses to stews, soups, and bakes and include a side salad. If you can make “5 a day part or your daily routine it will benefit your body, your overall health, and help you on the way to achieving a healthy, balanced diet. Sussex Community Foundation Trust Matching donors to needy people and causes. By Veronica Cowan This year the Sussex Community Foundation Trust - which awards grants to charities and community groups in Sussex, in four general grant rounds per year, and manages funds on behalf of a range of Kevin Sussex donors, conRichmond necting them to CEO groups and communities they want to support - celebrates its tenth birthday this year. The Duke of Richmond, who founded the trust, thought the establishment of such a foundation would highlight the smaller charities and community groups that are often overlooked when local people and companies think about giving to charity, but perhaps can’t identity where the need is. He said at the time. “Sussex Community Foundation has been set up to bridge this gap and to make it easy for local people and companies to give to local communities.” The Duke brought together a small steering group of

people from across the county, and following an extensive feasibility study, a number of individuals, companies and trusts were approached to become founderdonors. Their support funded the initial costs of setting up the organisation. Kevin Richmond was appointed as its first Chief Executive, and explains further: "The Duke of Richmond and Gordon had the idea to set up [the Foundation] in 2006 because he felt that many people see Sussex as a wealthy county which, in places, it is. However, there are some areas of Sussex that are in the top 10% most deprived in the UK. There are also many donors who wish to give locally.” The project started with enough funds secured to cover three years’ running costs, and the Foundation’s record in the past ten years has been impressive, in that it has given a massive £10 million in grants. The deprivation is still there, and this autumn, the Foundation will be updating, and relaunching, a report it commissioned in 2013 - Sussex Uncovered - which revealed the hidden disadvantage existing in the county. Mr. Richmond grew up in Somerset but fell in love with Sussex and Brighton, in particular, when he went to Sussex University at the age of 18. He has worked in a wide range of local and national charities, and was director of the Carers Centre for Brighton & Hove from 1999 to 2006. The Foundation, with its opportunity to put generous donors in touch with needy people and causes, was an attractive move for him: “Happily, we can bring donors together with the causes, charities and community groups they wish to support,” he said. Do they find it easy to get ambassadors? “We have found that many people are attracted to the Foundation, either as donors or other sorts of supporters, when they see what a great and quite unique sort of organisation it is, Mr. Richmond comments, adding: “We can maximise a donor’s charitable giving and put them in touch with smaller local charities and community groups across Sussex that they wish to support.” A recent example of this is the Sussex Lund grants programme, launched by Peter Baldwin and Lisbet Rausing, which is a collaboration between their charitable fund, Lund, and Sussex Community Foundation. It aims to support small-scale, practical projects that improve the ecology and landscape of the High Weald, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Charities, community groups, schools, churches, councils, farmers, landowners and anyone with a good idea about progressing this project were invited to apply for a grant of between £500 and £10,000. It attracted over 50 applications, and whilst the first call for applications has now closed, it will be open for applications again in the Spring of 2017.

This charity received a Competing in the Regional RDA grant o f Countryside Challenge £1,000 last year. Home Start Arun, whose volunteers visit families at home, giving practical and emotional support, which is directed at improving life chances for vulnerable children, received £5,000. And the healing power of animals was recognised when Hope in the Valley Riding for the Disabled Association received a grant of £973 last December. This charity caters for physically disabled children aged between 3 -16 and was delighted to “receive a generous award from the Noel Bennett Fund through the Sussex Community Founda-

tion,” said Liz Mills, its Honorary Secretary. So how did they use the grant funding? “We spent the money on the upkeep of our ponies, without [which] we would not be able to function at all. Keeping and caring for ponies becomes more expensive every year and donations such as this are vital to our continuing existence. Items covered include shoeing, feed, grazing and routine vet bills,” explained Ms. Mills. The Foundation doesn't want to rest on its laurels, and Mr. Richmond believes there is still much more it could do. Accordingly, its target for the next four years is to reach a total of £17.5 million in endowment funds for Sussex and to give out £1.5 million in grants each year. He notes in a recent Newsletter

Is the weaker pound a good thing? By Richard Cohen JP FPFS ACII MCSI Chartered Financial Planner One of the most widely predicted but most dismissed outcomes of the UK voting to leave the EU has been the dramatic drop in the value of the pound against the value of most other currencies. This has massive consequences for the country, some positive, some negative. Firstly, it will drive up the cost of imported goods and services. For example, technology companies, whose base currency is almost always the US dollar, were quick to put up their prices in the UK. By contrast our exports to other countries become cheaper to people in those countries, which could improve the prospects of British exporters. Higher prices on imports will push up inflation giving the Bank of England a tricky job when it comes to setting interest rates. Traditionally, when inflation rises the Bank increases rates, which in turn pushes up the cost of borrowing and causes us to spend less, bringing inflation under control. However, at the moment an increase in base rate could push the economy into recession. At the time of writing in early July, the signals from the Bank’s Governor Mark Carney are

that the next movement in rates is more likely to be down rather than up. This could mean that savers end up earning even less interest on their savings, whilst higher inflation erodes the value of those savings even quicker. Companies that are listed on the London Stock Exchange but generate income and profits overseas will, all things being equal, see their profits increase when they convert them back into pounds. This could well push up dividends and share prices for investors. Of course this needs to be taken in the context of a slowing global economy potentially meaning lower profits to begin with! UK investors looking to invest overseas will find assets are considerable more expensive than they were before and will need to decide whether such an investment is still good value. In summary, there are going to be winners and losers. However, since no Government for decades has intentionally pursued a policy of deliberately weakening the pound, on balance its probably not a good thing.
