Welcome... As usual, there’s plenty to read this month including a preview of the Goodwood Festival of Speed (11th-14th July) and this year is the 20th Anniversary of this prestigious event. Our What’s On guide is choc-a-block with other local events, it’s the main month for local village days and fetes. Hats off to all the community event organisers, we hope the weather is kind and that lots of people come along. Our main article this month is from the ever-droll Cat Sims. She writes from personal experience, about how social media has changed the way many of us communicate. There’s also a round up of local news from our correspondent Veronica Cowan. If you like to keep up with what’s going on in our region why not sign up to our online daily newsletter? Register for free at www.online.sussexlocal.net and receive a free daily digest of today’s news and events directly to your email inbox. I thought I would sign off this month with a little-known and very useful fact. If you can’t remember which side of the car your petrol tank is on, look at the picture of the petrol pump on your dashboard. The side on which the fuel hose is shown is the same side as the petrol tank on your car! Until next month,

18 Charity / Community Arun District Councillor Mid Term report I am now two years into my 4 year term and I need to update you on some electoral pledges, I know the well known retort is that you only hear from politicians at election time, so hopefully this will be a refreshing change. I cannot claim this is all my own work and I have been working closely with officers, Arundel Town Council and WSCC, but I do feel that together we are starting to solve some of the long term problems. Traffic Calming - I promised I would find a solution to ‘rat run’ drivers using Canada Road to shave a couple of minutes off their journeys, I have been pushing for two 20mph zones for Arundel and can report that these are now looking like a real possibility. One zone will be the area covered from following junctions/points Jarvis road/A27, Ford Road/A27 roundabout and the Ford road as you come into Arundel from Ford. The other zone will be for the old town, from A27 Roundabout/Maltravers Street, London Road/A29, The Causeway/A27 roundabout and Mill Road by Swanbourne Lake. All roads within these zones would be 20mph; this will slow drivers down and make Arundel a safer place. Ford Road HGV ban - This is being linked to the provision of a Lyminster bypass which will be built in the next 5 years; I cannot get the support of this scheme until the bypass is built as it will drive HGV’s through Lyminster. But I do believe we can try and get it de-listed as a HGV route with Satellite Navigation systems, this is something the Transport Minister Norman Baker has been pushing and we can try and get WSCC to use this government initiative to stop some of the foreign lorries using Ford Road. Keep weekly Refuse Collection - This is guaranteed until 2017, we retendered the contract in 2012 extending it for 5 years and shaving £200k off the contract for the next 5 years. Protect our Environment & improve recycling - The mechanical Recovery Unit is being built in Horsham and as well as the green bins recycling, the food and non recyclable plastics will be processed. The food will go to an anaerobic digester to make fertiliser and the currently non-recyclable plastics will be made into pellets to generate electricity. Also you may not be aware, but Arun receives nearly £1m a year for the recyclables from manufactures because they are at a very high quality thanks to the Materials Recycling Facility (MRF) unit at Ford. Maintain low council tax - Council tax has been frozen since 2011 and I will campaign to continue that. The local Conservative branch is holding a drinks reception at Burpham Village hall on the 06th of July at 6.30pm, if you are interested in coming please ring Bruce Henderson on 01903 874772 tickets are £15. Until next month, you can keep updated via www.pauldendle.org or email Pauldendle@aol.com
SUSSEX LOCAL Local Police Update The warmer weather is here (hopefully to stay)! and I would like to provide you with some advice on securing your homes and outbuildings. Garden equipment, tools and cycles are usually kept in sheds or garages and will be targeted by thieves. Burglaries to residential properties do not always occur in the night. Daytime breaks are common and smaller valuables such as laptops, jewellery and cash are easy to transport. Always lock the door and close the windows when you go out, even if you'll only be out for a short time. Patio doors should have special locks fitted to the top and bottom – ask your DIY store for advice. Keep sheds and garages locked and think about using a battery-operated alarm. Don't leave window and door keys in their locks. Keep expensive items out of sight and in a secure place. Take photos of items along with any serial numbers for identification should they be stolen and recovered. I would like to thank the public for reporting suspicious behaviour. Please continue to do this at the time you see it. It may be your call that helps us catch and convict those committing crime. The numbers to call are: non-emergency number 101 or local number 01273 470101. If it is an emergency, a crime is occurring or about to occur call 999. If you would like to contact me please call me on 07795 257116 If I am not on duty when you call, you will be redirected to the 101 number or email me at loraine.dixon@sussex.pnn.police.uk.

The Anti-Social Network? “Is it odd that we’ll be sat next to each other on the sofa, and have a brief conversation on Twitter but not say an actual, real word to each other?” ponders Cat Sims It’s a Sunday morning. I wake up to see the sunlight streaming through the curtains (miraculous in itself), my husband sleeping soundly beside me, the cats curled up contentedly on the end of the bed and I count my blessings. Then, before another thought crossed my mind, I check Facebook. And Twitter. I’m not proud of this, but that’s what happened.
While I am checking what everyone I’ve ever met has been up to in the ten hours since I checked it last, my husband’s alarm rings. A slight rustle occurs from the other side of the bed. The alarm is silenced and the familiar click-click-click of my husband entering the passcode on his phone can be distinctly heard. Five minutes pass and we haven’t even said good morning until, with a sigh and a yawn, we both simultaneously put our phones down, turn to each other and say good morning. This is habit now. It has somehow become ok for my husband and I to check our social media goings-on before we even say good morning and give each other a kiss. We don’t even think of this as weird, well, we didn’t think of it as weird until I decided to write an article about it. Then, all of a sudden, it was as if I’d opened the floodgates. “Does that mean it’s weird when we go to the cinema together and both ‘Check In’ at the Vue (other cinemas are available) and then both ‘Like’ each other’s check in?” I pondered worriedly. “Is it odd that we’ll be sat next to each other on the sofa, and have a brief conversation on Twitter but not say an actual, real word to each other?” The answer is yes. And no. Yes it’s peculiar because up until five years ago, this kind of behaviour would have been considered worryingly anti-social and even destructive to the fabric of human interactions and emotions but it’s also not strange. It’s become so embedded in our reality that it’s simply how things are. I’m sure there are experts who will disagree with me, but we still maintain healthy relationships (as much as we always did), we haven’t forgotten how to write or converse and while spelling and grammar is, admittedly at serious risk of becoming an optional extra, perhaps this is just the next step in language evolution? This desperate fear that real-life, human relationships will suffer in the face of this social media revolution is understandable but perhaps unfounded. Yes, relationships don’t look how they

used to look. Old, married couples won’t be able to look back on their box of love letters and keepsakes that they’ve stashed in the closet for fifty years. Instead they’ll go to the computer and flick through picture after picture on Facebook or Tumblr or Instagram. Is it any different though to the evolution from carrier pigeon to telegram to email?
However, my nephew sends me all his thank you letters via email. This riles me, in the same way that some of you will be riled with the ubiquity of all things internet, but it is something that I’m going to have to accept and honestly, as long as he’s still writing Thank You letters, that’s what’s important
While it’s easy to lambast social media and the development of the internet cyber highway for all sorts of evil and menace, there are also times when it is convenience personified. It’s a simple truth that I would not have kept in touch with many of my friends if it wasn’t for Facebook and email. If I had to write letters to everyone I knew who lived overseas, many friendships would have died off by now. I know that for many years, prior to the invention of the internet, people maintained penpal relationships for decades but that was in a time when far fewer people emigrated and moved overseas. Fifty or sixty years ago you may have known two or three people that lived overseas. Now, almost half of my friends are in other countries. It’s simply not feasible to rely on the traditional pen-pal method. This doesn’t mean that I don’t know or can’t remember how to write letters properly. It doesn’t mean that I don’t understand the joy and beauty of a hand-written letter. I still write thank you letters for every birthday and Christmas present that I get. I still write them with a fountain pen, on beautiful paper, put them in an envelope and send them in the post. I do this because, despite my love affair with all things cyber, I still know what’s appropriate and what’s not.

through the door Of course, it does mean we’re not all as honest as we used to be. Facebook, Twitter, instagram et al. have allowed us to become our own marketing department and PR guru. Photos that don’t represent us in our best possible light, don’t see the light of day. Our status update may read, “Enjoying an afternoon reading in the sunshine” accompanied by a picture of an old, battered version of Tess of the d’Urbevilles lying next to an iPod playing Tchaikovsky and a bottle of vitamin water, when the reality is Tess remains largely ignored in the face of the newest Grazia and while the Vitamin water is tasty, it’s not a diet coke and a Twirl bar. There are people that I’ve been put in touch with over the internet for work-related purposes and we’ve connected on Facebook before we’ve met. At first glance their profile seems extremely intimidating. They are, of course, beautiful and it appears that they only associate with beautiful people. Unsurprisingly, they never put a fashion foot wrong and always appear to be on the edge of the latest, ‘coolest’ thing. By the time the rest of us mere mortals catch up with it, it’s so passé it might as well be MySpace. The reality however, is never that perfect, and when it comes to finally meeting these people, it turns out that, just like the rest of us, they are prone to bad hair days, they

don’t always take a perfect picture and they don’t spend all their days at the ’in’ places, listening to the latest bands and hanging out with the most popular people. I suppose, in conclusion, that social media is a little like Elvis. The more traditional amongst us are not happy about it at all. How dare Facebook thrust its pelvis at us? How dare Twitter be all sexy and dreamy and make us think about sex all the time? How dare social media be so damn rock and roll? Well, it does dare and just like Elvis, it’s here to stay and sooner or later, we’ll be wondering what we were worried about in the first place. Phocas the Gardener Saint Phocas is the patron saint of gardeners. Phocas used to feed the poor and became skilled at growing herbs to aid the sick. Contributed by AJ of GCF Grave Tending services.
As the longest day (or shortest night) becomes just a memory, we are left with the slow slide to Christmas and the winter with only the prospect of the safe arrival of a new heir to the throne in mid July briefly providing a little joy. A gloomy outlook and, unfortunately, the predictions for our 'summer' are gloomy too. Whilst it has to be admitted that confidence is fairly low on the accuracy of current long term forecasts, due to the unsettled state of the pressure systems, jet stream variations etc., the signs are not good for any long, uninterrupted, spells of fine summer weather. July is often the warmest month of the year in our area but it is fairly certain that even if that proves to be the case this year, it will not be spectacularly so. July can also be the wettest month of the summer, that could be so this year. With the Atlantic depressions being frequent, westerly winds can bring long periods of often heavy rainfall, also thunderstorms with torrential downpours and the risk of 'flash flooding'. Occasionally hot, moist air from the south will arrive with one of these depressions bringing humid conditions which prove enervating and usually end noisily. The best July weather occurs when pressure is high and the wind from
the west or south-west, then hot sunny weather is experienced but this situation will also result in conditions turning sultry and ending with thunderstorms which usually develop over the near continent and move slowly northwards, depositing much rain and also some damaging hail. High humidity and frequent rain in July produce favourable conditions for the spread of plant disease and so early and continued preventative measures must be taken, for once a disease has established itself in the garden it is usually too late to do anything about it. Most good garden stores will be happy to answer your questions on this and to advise on what precautions are necessary and products that are available. So to the question of the weather for July 2013. As stated previously I must admit that confidence is not as high as usual in the prediction and would suggest that frequent reference to the updates on the Phocas website (www.phocas.org) would be advisable. Currently, the signs are that July will not be a bad month, but not a particularly good one either. It looks as though pressure generally will be a little lower than is the 'norm' so the month will be wetter overall than normal with temperatures near or slightly below the level usually expected in July. For the second week of Wimbledon it looks to be a mixture of sunshine with some cloud and warmish temperatures, however the likelihood is for some play interruptions due to rain on Monday 1st, Thursday 4th and the final Saturday 6th. For those attending it would, however, be advisable to go armed with an umbrella on all days to avoid soggy strawberries and watery cream!
In Season Buying British not only supports local producers but reduces your 'food miles' as well. In season this month: Fruit: Fruit gooseberry, raspberry, red currant, strawberry. Vegetables: Vegetables globe artichoke, broad beans, dwarf french beans, runner beans, beetroot, carrots, courgette, cucumber, gourd, kohl rabbi, lettuce, marrow, onions, peas, potatoes, pumpkin, radish, shallot, spinach, squash. Do check on the country of origin as other countries’ produce may also be on the shelves.

Mel’s Cajun spiced courgettes & butterbeans Ingredients (main course for 2) • 1 x 400g tin butterbeans in water (don’t drain them)
• 2 -3 courgettes (quartered lengthways and sliced) • 1 - 2 tsp Cajun spice mix • 1 red pepper (diced) • 3 tbsp tomato puree • 1 vegetable stock cube • 100 ml double cream .
You can try more of our chef’s creations in the cafe at Pulborough Brooks
Variations: If you’re not keen on spicy food, replace the Cajun spices with herbs for a Mediterranean flavour – perhaps oregano or rosemary. Top with a herby or cheesy breadcrumb mix and finish in a hot oven.
Method • Gently soften the peppers in a dry frying pan for about 10 minutes, adding the cajun spices when you’ve a couple of minutes to go. • Add the courgettes and the vegetable stock cube and cook for 5 minutes, stirring the vegetables occasionally. • Add the tomato puree, butterbeans (including the water) and cream. • Simmer on a low heat until the courgettes are tender – about 25 minutes. Serve with fresh bread & salad, or use as a topping for a baked potato (think gourmet baked beans!).

32 Local News
Arundel Area Diary Monthly news round up from our local correspondent Veronica Cowan The changeable weather, along with the recession, might have resulted in fewer people going to see the magnificent Carpet of Flowers at Arundel Cathedral, commented a spokeswoman. Nonetheless, there was quite a buzz when I visited, and the organisers deserve several floral tributes themselves for the creation, planning and organisation they put into this important event each year.
The Mill Road Six have become the Mill Road Eight, the swans who reside on that road having cracked open eight eggs this year. The birdbrained nesting next to a derestricted road, and the crossing and re-crossing of the road in a line led by the cob, the cygnets in the middle, and the pen bringing up the rear, looks precarious. Yet they all survive. It’s just as well, given that erecting a ‘wild-fowl crossing’ sign warning motorists of the varied wild fowl adjacent to the road seems to have been given the bird by Highways, despite my mini-campaign in a local newspaper over the past few years. So much for the power of the press - it’s enough to make one hacked-off! If you thought lamp-posts were the sole domain of the canine world’s dating service, being the means by which dogs send ‘wee-mail’ to prospective mates, think again. Event organisers and local tourism promoters will now be able to promote major events, by booking banner space on eleven lamp posts in Arundel. Arun District Council has secured the sites, and the Arundel Town Criers
Competition, on the lower lawns of Arundel Castle on 8 June, was billed as the first event to be ‘lamposted’ to launch the scheme. Let’s hope it sign-posts people to the town. Ring 01903 737920 or email phil.graham@arun.gov.uk. On the other hand, don’t contact Arun District Council to renew your concessionary bus pass or to make a new application. Whilst current passes will continue to be valid and renewed automatically, customers should now contact West Sussex Bus Pass Information Line, on 0845 0751018, email buspass@westsussex.gov.uk or write to West Sussex Bus Pass, PO Box 212, Waterlooville, PO7 6ZN. Arundel Festival runs from August 16-26 this year. At the time of writing, the organisers were busy finalising the programme, but expect anything from helicopter flights to music, theatre, fishing competitions, quizzes and….. Oh yes, and the GB Theatre Company will be performing the Bard’s ‘The Merchant of Venice and ‘A Midsummer Night's Dream’ in The Collector Earl's Garden at Arundel Castle on August 22, 23 and 24. Still with specially-designed gardens, great news that Greenfingers, a charity dedicated to creating gardens in children’s hospices, has chosen Chestnut Tree House as one of ten beneficiaries of one of its gardens. Greenfingers has launched an appeal to raise £750,000 over two years to build the gardens. It has already worked with Chestnut Tree House on the award-winning Meadow Garden, a tranquil space for reflection and remembrance, and is now devising plans for a magical woodland walk there. To donate, ring 01494 674749, or email info@greenfingerscharity.org.uk. With big sums of money in mind, did you realise you are living in a lucky post-coded area in terms of lottery winners? According to National Lottery research, the BN postcode is one of the luckiest in the country. It ranks 15th highest for jackpot millionaires and 20th for the most big-prize winners. The post-code includes Brighton and Hove (Actually!), Lancing, Worthing, Littlehampton, Arundel and Steyning. It could be you! St Nicholas Church’s recent Art Festival featured local artists, painters, sculptors and photographers, and was well attended. Local architect, Neil

Holland’s landscapes and buildings, Sue Taylor’s grand Venetian canal and Nick Plumley’s Ely Cathedral were particularly memorable. Prints of Mr Holland's painting of St Nicholas’ are available to buy, with a proportion of the proceeds being donated to the Friends of St Nicholas Church. Details from 01903 882923. Why just buy a pint, when you can purchase the pub’s freehold? That’s what three regulars at the George and Dragon in Burpham have done, in the most positive example of community action yet in
the hostelry stakes. John David King, Bill Tustin and Simon Lay, directors of the Burpham and Warningcamp Pub Company Ltd, did just that, and then offered shares to a number of villagers in Burpham and nearby Wepham and Warningcamp. We should drink to the success, preferably by frequenting the 300-year-old establishment to support their endeavours when it reopens, after refurbishment, in July. Cheers! Meanwhile, there is work to be done. Walberton Allotments Association has vacant full-sized plots for rental. If you dig this opportunity, contact Jerry Nelson, lettings officer on 01243 552987 or 07746 515904. The Association’s joining fee is £15, and the annual rent £25. Sounds a snip!
