Welcome... We are delighted to be bringing you our biggest issue to date this month. It is 7 years since we published our first local magazine in the Storrington area and we are thrilled to still be here bringing you regular competitions, local news and events and working with some fantastic local businesses. Thank you to everyone who supports our magazine by using the advertisers, attending the events and entering our competitions. If you have something you would like us to publish please do get in touch. We work about a month in advance and are happy to publish local, not-for-profit events and items of local interest for free. The warm summer last year brought more tourists to the UK, which was great for the economy, with almost 33 million international visitors spending a total of £21 billion. Another sunny summer this year could give trade a welcome boost in our area with more visitors coming to visit the South Downs National Park and enjoy our lovely towns and villages. Let’s hope that for business and pleasure alike, we are in for a sun-filled summer starting this month. Have a super June.

Clarkes Arundel is a family run business that takes pride in providing it’s clients with a professional and personal service. This last month has seen an interesting shift in the market in our area. For the last six months we have seen too few properties coming to the market leading to often unrealistic price expectations. However, this month has seen a healthy change, in that, more properties have been put up for sale. This has meant that prices are finding a more realistic level: this can only be a good thing. Sensible numbers of properties for sale at achievable prices make for a happy time for all! When there are more properties about it is important that your home is presented in the best possible way to the prospective buyers. Digital photography and the internet have lead to a drastic change in the way a home needs to be marketed. Gone are the days when a few grainy snapshots attached to an A4 piece of paper worked well… Today the buyers will be trawling through Rightmove looking at all the properties available in the area of interest in their price range. What will make them stop and take a second look at your

Littlehampton £325,000
home? The photographs! A great photograph will draw the buyers in, tempt them to view and create that all important first impression. Likewise, a bad photograph will immediately put your home on the ‘no’ list. At Clarkes we take time to photograph your home so as to present it in the best possible way to attract good quality buyers. When we ask you to tidy or ‘de-clutter’ a room it will be to ensure that the resulting photograph shows the room to the buyers in the best possible light. We often come back on different days in different weather conditions to take more photographs. Making an effort to get these things right does make an enormous difference when it comes to attracting those all important purchasers. It is now relatively rare for buyers to request hard copies of property sale particulars, an email version or the information already viewed on Rightmove and our website is usually all that is needed. In this digital age quality photographs are the best way to showcase your home!

Arundel Lido The original “Arundel Swimming Pool” opened in 1960, built on land gifted to the Town by the 16th Duke of Norfolk... Arundel Borough Council owned the site, and one man (Joe Pescott) ran it. In 1974, ownership passed to Arun District Council (ADC), who further developed the site, built the “Baby Pool” and installed a Water Heating Boiler. In early-2000, ADC closed the site, claiming that they could not afford the running costs, nor the investment needed to re-build the Main Pool. After a public outcry, and endless negotiations with District and Town Councils, the newly-formed Arundel & Downland Community Leisure Trust
Personal service & advice for all your domestic appliance needs. FREE installation Plus recycling of your old equipment if needed We deliver, we install, we care...
(ACT) took over the site in May 2002 and, with the Main Pool rebuilt, re-opened as “Arundel Lido” in 2004. Local support for the Trust was excellent and continues to be so. This is perhaps best illustrated by last year’s Public Appeal: in just 3 months, £35,000 was raised to replace the defunct Water Heating Boiler! Local people must really love this facility! As Arundel Lido enters its 11th Season, you can find out what’s on offer at www.arundel-lido.com, by telephoning 01903 884772 or by visiting the site (via the Fitzalan Car Park in Queen Street, Arundel).

The Sussex Guild Fine craftsmanship on display The Sussex Guild is a group of professional designers and makers of fine contemporary and traditional craftwork, whose members live and work in Sussex and the adjoining counties of Kent, Surrey and Hampshire. The members have been selected for their high degree of skill and creativity. Although The Sussex Guild has changed and grown over the years since its foundation in 1970, the original spirit still remains. They continue to be an autonomous, self-help organisation and now, as before, a very special bond of friendship and support exists between members. The Guild aims to inspire and encourage public appreciation of fine craftsmanship by organising shows and exhibitions in a wide variety of venues. Visitors to these events enjoy learning about the crafts they see on display for they can discuss with the makers themselves the design process, the techniques, tools and materials used. Exhibitors are always willing to talk about their work. Pieces can be bought at the shows or specially commissioned. Friends of The Sussex Guild are members of the public who are interested in high quality craft and who support the aims of the society.

Home Support Available For Vulnerable Residents West Sussex County Council (WSCC) is reminding residents of three home support services available to adults and older people. Home from Hospital helps settle people back into living independently and involves a home assessment and help with organising transport and practical and emotional support. The Good Neighbours Scheme, Scheme provided by The Royal Voluntary Service, offers face-to-face, telephone and group support to residents who are at risk of, or are suffering from, loneliness and isolation. Help at Home provides subsidised help and assistance with cleaning and household tasks to adults who are in receipt of a means tested benefit. The service includes ‘safe and well’ checks by volunteers who will monitor if there is any change in someone’s wellbeing or home surroundings. All three services can be accessed through a patient’s GP either by self-referral or by a friend or relative, or through Age UK West Sussex on 01903 761800 www.ageuk.org.uk/westsussex; Guild Care on 01903 528600 www.guildcare.org.

The Arundel Flood Risk
Arundel Walking Festival
The Arundel Community Partnership report that a study commissioned by the Environment Agency shows that there are currently 17 properties at risk. If a “do nothing” option is followed as the current defences fail over time, this rises to 138 properties. As more fail this will rise to 377 properties. Erosion to the wall on the west bank of the river, between the two bridges, will raise this number to 443. This does not take into account damage to either farmland or the railway line. There is no suggestion that flooding is imminent, but this information is in the public domain and therefore it is important that these prospects are removed so that residents can continue to enjoy a competitive insurance market. At a public meeting in December, the Arundel Flood Risk Community Group was mandated to lobby for the creation of a Partnership Fund to enable work to be carried out. Also the land owner has a duty to maintain his flood defences. Each section of the wall along the West bank between the bridges is the responsibility of the owner of the property above it and the number of owners involved is significant. More information from Arundel Communty Partnership, Town Hall, Arundel.
A varied series of walks has been organised on 14th, 15th and 16th June to celebrate Sussex Day. Some are serious, some for fun, some easy, some more challenging. The Lesser of Two Evils Some of you may have seen the newspaper reports regarding the recent debate on the Local Plan, we had to vote on whether to agree the strategic option of providing 2000 houses in Eastergate/Westergate and Barnham and also 600 houses in Angermering. If we don’t have a local plan in place then we are vulnerable as a District for “Planning by Appeal”. This is where a developer would put in an application on a site to the planning authority which is rejected by local Councillors, if the developer subsequently appeals to the planning inspectorate in Bristol, the appeal can be allowed for the sole reason that the planning authority did not have a local plan in place. So this could get applications popping up all over the place, on greenfield sites like Horses Field and it would be planning anarchy. In addition to this, we wouldn’t get the windfalls of developer contributions to build new roads or community buildings. This situation has arisen because the previous Labour government wanted to see more house building and designed this into the system; the coalition government also wants more house building so has allowed the system to continue. As a country we need more houses, but this is not localism, it’s planning by duress.
So I voted for the recommendation not because I wanted to or because I believe putting these houses in these locations was desirable, I voted for it to stop planning by appeal and I saw a vote for yes as the lesser of two evils. However I looked at the conundrum I could not see a way out. It was not an easy or popular decision, but we couldn’t wait any longer in making a decision however unpalatable or unpopular, as we have already had a number of applications approved on appeal. Until next month. Paul Dendle is Arundel Ward & Cabinet Member on Arun District Council and can be contacted by email Pauldendle@aol.com or visit: www.pauldendle.org
Arundel Votes In Favour Of Plan The Arundel Community Partnership (ACP) reports that the Neighbourhood Plan was approved by 631 votes to 97, a 90% vote in favour of adoption. The turnout was 26.6%, which was considered reasonable as this was the first such referendum in Sussex and only the 13th in the country, of a potential 7,000. The ACP would like to thank everyone who contributed their time, their ideas; and their votes.

Novium Museum A stunning contemporary statement or Chichester’s ‘Beige Elephant’? By Veronica Cowan Chichester District Council’s new museum, in crushed Bath stone and lots of glass, really makes a statement, although not one welcomed by all locals. One letter to the Chichester Ob-server described it as a “beige elephant”, whilst others have been critical of the admission charge, and questioned whether it represents value for money. The former museum was in an 18th-century disused corn store in Little London, but in moving to the new building on Tower Street, known as the Novium, which derives from the Roman name for the city "Noviomagus Reginorum”, the Chichester District Council hopes it will become one of the jewels in its crown, attract locals and visitors and give a boost to the local economy. It is certainly a departure from the typical fustymusty museum buildings, with lots of steps, that

‘decorate’ many towns, but once inside there is a lot to like about the contemporary style, with lots of space, beautifully carved benches, stairways flooded with natural light and a large lift offering access to all. Designed by Keith Williams Architects, designers of Ireland’s Wexford Opera House, the Marlowe Theatre in Canterbury, and London’s Unicorn Theatre, this look-at-me structure is built on piles, rather than foundations, to protect the remains of the Roman Bathhouse underneath, which has been dated to the Flavian period, 69AD to 96AD. In-deed, like Yours Truly, you might have parked over these when shopping in Chichester in times past. They were preserved under the former temporary Tower Street car park since first being excavated in the 1970s, pending construction of the purpose-built Novium. The archaeological remains were boxed in and had sand put over them for preservation purposes. Archaeologists working at the site in the 1970s also found remnants of small-scale Saxon pottery production, medieval housing, a public house and a school. The centrepiece is the Roman bath house, which has been uncovered and dominates the ground floor. They were a type of Roman leisure and beauty centre, and an audio visual film shows how

32 Local Places these baths were built and used in Roman times. There is a large entrance gallery, with a viewing platform and glass vitrines built around it. The construction cost of almost £7 million did not include heritage lottery funding, but sale of the residential development site next to the Novium to McCarthy and Stone has helped offset the capital costs. With such an investment it would be a shame if it didn’t get the visitors it merits, so what are the barriers I asked the recently-appointed manager, Cathy Hakes.“There have been issues with signage, and local maps that we are working on. Being up a side street, doesn’t help. It is tucked away but we are producing promotional materials with easy directions. We have to remember that not everyone knows we are here, so we are doing Outreach, and talks, and attending parish council meetings [to raise awareness].” I noted that after the Department for Culture, under the the previous Administration, had removed charges for entry to public museums and galleries several years ago, visitor numbers soared, and satisfaction levels rocketed. Could charging be a handicap, given that entry to the previous museum was free of charge, I wondered. “We are looking at different arguments and talking to other museum directors. The ideal would be for the museum to pay for itself, but we may need to look at other income streams,” said Ms. Hakes. Moving to the building facilitated installation of the massive Chilgrove Roman Villa Mosaic, dating back to the fourth century. This was found by a local farmer whilst ploughing a field fifty years ago, and had been on display at the purpose built store within the Discovery Centre at Fishbourne Roman Palace. Following conservation work, it is now on the ground floor of the Museum opposite the bath house remains. Other exhibits include the Jupiter Stone, a piece of Roman sculpture base, dating from between the late first and early third century AD. This was found in an ancient rubbish dump during excavations at West Street in 1934, and has been conserved and rebuilt to take a prime position in the museum. Another prominent structure is the Bosham Head, a remnant of ancient art and all that remains of a Roman statue, which was found in the Vicarage garden in Bosham. The Novium contains about 150,000 artefacts, both on display and in its store, and the challenge is to choose which to display. Many have never been displayed to the public before, and the galleries will use them to observe continuity and
SUSSEX LOCAL change across the district and influences from different people, as well as to map wider technological and social developments. The basic aim is to tell the story of Chichester over the past 500,000 years, a city with a rich and varied story to be told by a large number of objects spanning its Saxon, Norman and Medieval heritage through to comparatively recent Georgian and Victorian eras. An exhibit which appealed to me - the Municipal Moon Lantern – dates to around 1600, and was used in a procession at the open-ing of the Chichester Festival Theatre in 1962. It was carried behind the Mayor of Chichester when he made official visits at night. The new building makes it easier to preserve the collection in the correct atmosphere, explained Ms. Hakes. “It has environmental controls that can be monitored by computer and the store is first class. We have done intense conservation work on the collection.” When I visited, the second-floor gallery was being prepared for an exhibition commemorating the First World War, which aims to “explore the bravery, creativity, joy and sorrow of WW1 and it's impact on Chichester.” It has been completed, and runs until 31 December, and has hands-on activities, including First Aid, and testing a German Picklehaube (helmet).

through the door Chichester is a rich source of Roman finds, and visitors often discover items in gardens and bring them in to the museum. “We have a ‘finds afternoon’ when the public come in and the collections’ officer will help them identify what they have found,” Ms. Hakes explained. O u t r e ac h projects include links with the local college de-sign students, an after-school club and a dementia group. The Woodstaplers Room on the second floor is used by study groups. It has views of the Cathedral, as does the gallery on that floor - of the city’s rooftops, the cathedral spire and its bell tower. The Novium also has a shop with a wide range of souvenirs, gifts and books as well as housing the city’s Tourist Information Centre. It also runs the Guildhall in Priory Park, which is part of a medieval Friary dating back to 1289. This was closed by Henry VIII, as part of the dissolution of the monasteries in 1538, and gifted to the Mayor of Chichester. It has been used as a Town Hall and
law courts, and the poet and artist William Blake was tried there. “We have had it cleaned and invested in new seating and are trying to open it on a regular basis,” said Ms. Hakes, “and we are also looking at summer events as well as potentially getting a wedding licence.” We can drink to that! 34 Finance Should you be completing a Tax Return? Under the self-assessment system, certain taxpayers are liable to complete a Return. These include company directors, self-employed, people with income over £100,000, where expense claims exceed £2,500, if there is untaxed income in excess of £2,500 or capital gains, those who are required to pay the High Income Child Benefit charge. If you fall into one of the above criteria, you must file a tax return for the year ended 5 April 2014 by 31 January 2015. Failure to file on time creates huge penalty issues; a return over three months late could result in penalties in excess of £900 even if no tax is owed! Areas where you might need some advice: - Claiming for expenditure incurred personally in respect of your employment such as professional subscriptions: - Income you receive from property - Investment income sources that have differing tax rates deducted at source - You are a higher rate tax payer and make Gift Aid or personal pension contributions Monks Accountants in Arundel offer a full range of tax planning, advisory and compliance services. A new name for Midhurst solicitors And the benefits of mediation for couples considering divorce Midhurst solicitors’ practice Anderson Rowntree has not only expanded its operations to provide family law and mediation services to its clients, but is also rebranding. The rebrand follows the 2012 merger of Midhurst firm Bevis Rowntree with Anderson Longmore & Higham, which has four other offices across West Sussex. As head of the Anderson Rowntree family team, Edward Cooke (pictured) is responsible for family law and mediation at its Midhurst office. Edward, who has worked in family law in the Midhurst area since 2000, says that family law is undergoing significant changes. As of April 2014, almost anyone going through a divorce who wishes to start court proceedings related to financial issues or children must attend
a meeting (known as a ‘MIAM’) to find out more about mediation. Edward welcomes this change. He says: “I see first -hand the considerable benefits that mediation can bring for couples and their children in terms of achieving more amicable, child-focused solutions.” An experienced family mediator, Edward is accredited as a Family Lawyer and Mediator by Resolution, the nationwide organisation of family law professionals. His growing team not only provides family mediation, but also offers collaborative law - another out-of-court process involving couples and their lawyers - and specialist advice when a relationship breaks down. 38 Gardening Flowers for Health Eating some flowers found in British gardens can apparently reduce the risk of heart disease and cancer according to a study published in the Journal of Food Science. They contain phenolics, antiinflammatory compounds, which it is suggested reduce the risk of heart disease and some cancers. Among those edible flowers listed are Viola tricolor, marigolds, hibiscus, lavender, rose petals.
It should be noted that only those known not to have been treated with pesticides and other garden chemicals should be eaten.

Toxic Caterpillar There are warnings again this year, as last, of the dangers posed by the caterpillars of the oak processionary moth. This little beast is covered with fine bristles which when coming into contact with the skin can cause rashes but more seriously can
Gardening 39 be born on the wind causing serious irritation to the eyes, skin and lungs resulting, in extreme cases, in asthma attacks and severe allergic reaction - sometimes fatal. The moth lays its eggs on oak trees and the larvae feed on the trees leaves, once a tree is stripped bare they move on to the next one, hence the name oak processionary moth. The nests are about the size of a tennis ball and white and can be found in June and July. The public are warned not to try and destroy the nests themselves but to contact the authorities.

The Superstitions & Curious Beliefs of Old Sussex by W.H. Johnson A graphic introduction to the superstition-ridden world of our ancestors. W.H. Johnson presents a fascinating world of witchcraft; of spells and counter-spells; of so-called cunning men; of death omens; of girls conjuring the identity of their future husbands; of fisherman’s precautions against ill luck; of the fairies and of the devil and all his nefarious ways. In “The Superstitions & Curious Beliefs of Old Sussex” W.H. Johnson, well known for his many books on Sussex themes, explores the mind-set of people whose lives were coloured by a richly woven tapestry of ancient believes that today seen outlandishly farfetched but once gave ordinary lives their meaning..
