Charity & Community Storrington Conservation Society The local conservation society received the relaxation of the Covid-19 restrictions recently with great relief. The society should be able to resume limited working parties, so long as social distancing arrangements and increased hygiene standards are maintained. In a letter to Sussex Local, a member said “It is noteworthy that since the start of the lockdown, more walkers, joggers, riders and cyclists are taking the opportunity to enjoy the paths and bridleways in the area. Family groups being especially noticeable. Perhaps this will become part of the new normal. It demonstrates how valuable our green spaces are. Research shows use of them is good for our mental and physical health. Their conservation is vital. Making them more accessible to all should be seen as essential.” If circumstances allow, the regular Saturday morning work party is due to meet in Fryern Dell on 5th September at 10AM to carry out further restoration work of the Victorian Pleasure Garden. This to be confirmed nearer the time. www.storringtonconservation.org.uk

Rotary announce new President Rotary’s community service has been hard hit by the Coronavirus safeguards. They have been unable to start the popular monthly Sullington Hall Film Nights, Rotary’s Storrington Village Day has been cancelled Pippa Davies and they are unable to host the Bank Holiday Car Boot Sales. Throughout lockdown, members have continued to meet at a distance through Zoom. They are planning to resume business as usual as soon as circumstances allow. In addition to adjusting to the ‘new normal’ the Rotary Club are pleased to announce they have a new President - Pippa Davies. Pippa and her family moved to Partridge Green, West Sussex from West Wickham, Kent in 1997 and more recently she and her husband Steve moved to Thakeham. Beginning her career as an officer in the Metropolitan Police Force, she re-trained and specialised in educational and personal development for children and adults who have learning disabilities. For 20 years Pippa managed West Sussex Learning Links, raising £1.5 million for this unique countywide charity which supports adults who have learning disabilities to access mainstream learning and leisure opportunities with support from volunteer 'buddies'. Pippa joined the Rotary Club of Storrington and Pulborough District in January 2011 and had a first spell as President in 2015. Taking on the role again allows her to once more lead the Club support for worthwhile projects in the local community and internationally. She said, “The friendships and fellowship of other Rotary Members in these challenging times is a very big bonus and I am very much looking forward to the year ahead as President of such a great Club”. pippadavies_wsll@hotmail.com or 01903 74040

Charity & Community Impulse Leisure (Adur) jobs risk Adur District Council has assured residents that it will take all steps possible to secure sustainable leisure services in the future following the announcement that the company running centres is facing collapse. Impulse Leisure, trading locally as Adur Community Leisure, which runs all leisure and recreational services from three centres in the district, announced it was in severe difficulty with up to 150 jobs at risk. The leisure centres affected are Lancing Manor Leisure Centre, Southwick Leisure Centre and Waders Community Pool in Shoreham which are all owned by Adur District Council. The Council awarded Impulse a 30-year contract to run leisure services out of the centres in 2005. Any financial surplus goes to the company, not to the Council, in addition to the Council paying an annual Service Fee to ACL to deliver the services. In common with some other leisure service suppliers around the country Impulse has been severely affected by the Covid 19 Pandemic and

subsequent lockdown. The centres have been closed since March with doubt still surrounding when some activities will be able to resume. The Council has been in dialogue with Impulse during that period but there has been an ongoing concern over how the company will finance itself moving forward. The Council did pay in advance the full annual service fee it pays to the company to run services from its buildings but is not able to offer the large one off payment requested for financial reasons or without sufficient likelihood that Impulse will be able to recover and maintain its services for residents. The Council’s own finances have been badly affected by the lockdown. The Council has insisted it would maintain the centres to ensure they were fit for use and begin the search for a new operator immediately. Cllr Emma Evans, Adur District Council’s Executive Member for the Environment, said: ‘We understand how devastating this news must be to a large number of staff during these uncertain times. We will do all we can to try to reopen those centres as soon as is practicable. A final decision is due at Adur & Worthing Councils’ Joint Strategic Committee on July 7.

Is your property protected against fraud? By Clive Janes, CRJ Lettings Scammers are getting increasingly sophisticated and property is targeted due to the high transactional values. You may be aware of ‘phishing’, whereby fraudsters impersonate your solicitor to try and intercept the transfer of funds into their own pockets. But have you considered the fraudsters who attempt to impersonate you?! Property title fraud has been on the increase. In simple terms, this is where a fraudster targets properties that they can sell or mortgage by impersonating the registered owner. Buy-to-let properties without a mortgage are ideal, as the owner won’t live at the property and there won’t be a mortgage company double-checking things. As title deeds are a publicly available document (they cost £3 to download online), it is very easy for anyone to get the name of the owner of a property. The title deed will also show whether there is a ‘charge’ against the property i.e. a mortgage. With this information the fraudster, who typically poses as a tenant, will simply change their name by deed poll to match the property owners name. Now living at

the property with the same name as the true owner, it becomes very easy to build up identification documents and paperwork that would see that person passed off as the ‘owner’. That’s exactly what has happened in recent cases, with one fraudulent tenant selling a property without the landlord even knowing! Another case saw a previously unencumbered property in London become subject to a £1.2million bridging loan, which was paid out to a mother and daughter who had changed their name to match the registered owners. Fortunately, there is a solution to this; which is to enter a restriction on your title deed. This will then state that any application to change the register must be accompanied by a solicitor’s certificate verifying your identity as that of the legal owner. This can cause a slight delay when you actually want to sell or mortgage your own property, but that’s surely better than falling victim to this serious crime. www.crjlettings.co.uk email: clive@crjlettings.co.uk or telephone: 01243 624 599
