Welcome... With the Royal Wedding, Easter and Mother’s Day this month, there’s plenty of opportunity to get together and enjoy time with friends and family. If you’re looking for something to do with the children or on one of the bank holidays, look no further than our extra large What’s On guide, see pages 4 - 8. All we need now is some good weather, here’s hoping! Also this month, on page 17, Veronica Cowan visits the beautiful estate of West Dean near Chichester and meets the head gardener. Talking of gardens, the saintly Phocas has plenty of gardening tasks to occupy your April bank holidays, (page 27). It really is a lovely time of year to get out in the fresh air and I hope our cheerful cover photo inspires you to do just that. Why not join a group walk? See page 12 for a selection of walks in our area. Finally, don’t forget Mother’s Day on Sunday 2nd April. Here’s a little poem for all our lovely mums, enjoy your official ‘day off’! Hundreds of dewdrops to greet the dawn, Hundreds of bees in the purple clover, Hundreds of butterflies on the lawn, But only one mother the wide world over. - George Cooper See you next month, Kristina Words of Wit “If evolution really works, how come mothers only have two hands?” MILTON BERLE

Minx it up! Kris Thomas tries the new glitzy Minx nail laminates and “Gelish” extended-wear nail polish. I absolutely adore the new Minx nail laminates. They affix to the nails with the help of a heat lamp rather like transfers and, being a laminate rather than a polish, there is no drying time and no chipping. My toes looked stunning for well over four weeks and everyone that saw them thought they were amazing. If you don’t fancy the futuristic silver or ‘blingy’ gold there are a range of other metallic colours as well as stripes, polka dots, fishnet and other intricate patterns even the most accomplished nail artist would struggle to achieve with varnish. They are also removed with heat and I am told a hairdryer will do the trick if needed! The other new ‘apply and go’ nail product to hit the salons this year is Gelish. For those who know the Shellac system this is a similar extended-wear nail polish developed for people who don’t want extensions but do want a manicure or pedicure

that lasts longer than a couple of days. The Gelish range has a huge choice of colours as well as glittery top coats, perfect for parties. Like the Shellac polish the Gelish is cured by UV light so again there is no drying time. Although the Gelish wont chip or fade the nails still grow so after about two weeks you would want to have it removed. There’s a simple wrap around remover which takes off the polish in ten minutes, no soaking, and underneath the nail is completely undamaged. Angela runs Simply Nails from her comfortable home/salon in Findon village High Street. Prices are from £21 contact Simply Nails 01903 873924

Heat Pumps Only last year, I was preparing a survey on an Edwardian detached pile in deepest East Sussex. I had noted that there was no gas supply, and central heating was powered from an oil fired boiler. As I approached the attractive swimming pool in the rear gardens my thoughts were with the owner who I assumed would pick up a substantial water heating bill for the pool. Then, tucked away behind a bush I saw the air source Heat pump…. pump looking not unlike a large refrigerator. Heat pumps are the green “equivalent” of the domestic heating boiler. They can provide hot water stored in a hot water cylinder, provide heating via radiators or under-floor pipework… And they work in British weather conditions! .They use electricity to run but are still a “green” source because they give out about 3 times more energy than they use. Its clever stuff, achieved by extracting heat from external low temperature sources (the atmosphere, or the ground), and then concentrating the energy using refrigeration technology (heat pump) . to supply heat for the home, business or swimming pool. Ground source heat pumps use energy from the

SUSSEX LOCAL Sun that has been stored in lakes, watercourses, bore holes and the ground. The heat collector consists of pipes filled with an antifreeze solution which is circulated to collect heat. Ground source pumps are better suited for larger properties as large areas of land (>1000 m2) are typically required to lay out the buried pipework horizontally underground to acquire, sufficient energy. Boreholes can be used, but they have to go deep, very deep. Air source heat pumps extract energy from the air; they closely resemble air conditioning units and do not need extensive ground works. They are a little less efficient than ground source pumps, but are cheaper to install. They are suitable for small to medium size properties and urban as well as rural situations. The running costs of heat pumps make them very competitive with oil, LPG or electric heating, and marginally more cost effective than a modern condensing gas boiler. The Government Renewable Heat Incentive grant scheme is intended to make heat pumps economically viable even for properties connected to mains gas, with a planned return on investment of 12%.

First Aid for Roofs Mossy banks and mossy boughs may be picturesque, but moss or lichen stubbornly clinging to roof tiles is a different matter entirely. Moss, lichen and algae are among the earliest of life forms and have remained virtually unchanged over the years. The general demise in heavy industry and the resulting improvement in the environment have led to an increase in airborne spores and the milder weather enables these simple plants to thrive. In addition, acid rain and other pollutants combine to wreak havoc on our roofs. If your roof is over 25 years old and beginning to look jaded, Sussex Moss Removal can provide a lasting and affordable solution. The whole process is extremely thorough from the original survey, careful cleaning and application of a fungicidal drench and preparation of the roof for the application of the protective coating (with a choice of colours) through to the final inspection with the customer. The company has been operating for 10 years and employs no salesmen, relying instead on good honest

workmanship and high standards to promote its growth. Commendations such as "..the whole process has significantly improved the appearance of the house” (Mr. H. Pulborough) and "The roof looks like new “ (Mrs. B. West Chiltington) support these principles. Andrew Herrington, who runs the company, believes that the varied types of roof in West Sussex motivate his work team. Andrew is particularly proud of his restoration of BBC Changing Rooms presenter Oliver Heath's roof on his "Eco House" in Hove last Summer. The project was recently featured in the Evening Argus and Oliver Heath was delighted with the work. As protection processes and products continue to improve, Sussex Moss Removal is confident enough to provide a 10 year guarantee for all their work. So if your roof is in need of a “facelift”, now may be the time to contact them, particularly as mentioning their advertisement in Sussex Local will entitle you to a 10% discount.

Cleaning Up! Quality Kwik Dry Cleaners in Durrington celebrate 22 years of spotless service In 1989 Gloria Connor took over a dry cleaning establishment in Half Moon Lane, Worthing and Quality Kwik was born. She was joined by husband Jeff in 1996 who opened the Tesco unit in Durrington. Both shops operated until 2003 when Gloria semi retired. When Tesco opened a new superstore in 2010, Quality Kwik relocated and reopened there this February. The new location has given the business an opportunity to invest in state of the art dry cleaning machinery which is more efficient and more environmentally friendly plus a garment conveyor system. Dry cleaning and in particular the care of designer clothing and wedding dresses, is still the main concern, but Quality Kwik also offers a range of other services to customers. These include, repairs and alterations, laundry (including duvets), hire of carpet cleaning equipment and mattress cleaning at home. There is also a curtain cleaning service which includes taking down and re-hanging with free collection and delivery included. A shoe repair

Business Spotlight 23 service is to be added in April to complement the existing sale of polishes and laces and in response to demand a full range of Dylon dyes will also be stocked from April. A wide variety of handbags, purses and gentlemen’s belts is already available. A loyalty card has been introduced and for a small annual fee, “Privilege” will give 10% off all cleaning and repairs and £1 off duvet cleaning. This is proving to be of great benefit to regular customers who can also take advantage of “three for two” “five for £20” and other deals on offer throughout the year. When cleaning a wedding dress recently, Jeff realised that they had been dry cleaning this family’s clothes for some sixteen years and that he had actually cleaned an anorak for the bride when she was just six years old! This is the sort of service that is of prime importance to Quality Kwik and the reason behind their motto; Be smart and visit us. Visit us and be smart.

Must End 30/04/2011
