Clear Appeal Windows, doors & conservatories For many people the words "double glazing" evoke images of over enthusiastic salesmen. Thankfully nowadays reputable companies tend to adopt a more customer-focused approach. Brian Attwater has over 30 years experience in windows and home improvements. Brian has been in business since 2008 with his son Mark (pictured above) and told us that he believes the future growth of the company depends upon dedicated customer service. In his opinion an open and honest approach is of prime importance both at the quotation stage and during fitting. He described the company’s wide range of windows, doors and conservatories with designs and colours selected to satisfy the most discerning client. He particularly praised the Kommerling Valentis Curve PVCU windows and the bi-fold scenic patio doors. Brian is happy to offer a quotation by phone or via the website and offers a follow up survey to ensure there are no hidden extras. Tel 01903 765 506 or visit www.attwaterhomeimprovements.co.uk

Household Waste Recycling Sites At a recent meeting, WSCC Councillors discussed making a number of changes to local Household Waste Recycling Sites (HWRSs). The views of more than 4,800 residents were taken into consideration as part of the proposals following the biggest response to a consultation the council has ever run. WSCC needs to make savings of more than £18million next year and these proposed changes follow a review of the authority’s waste service.
Following feedback from residents, the Council’s Environmental and Community Services Select Committee must decide whether to change a number of parameters including - opening times and days of HWRSs, and introducing charges for non-household waste disposal. It is anticipated the proposals would save about £2million a year if they are all approved. www.westsussex.public-i.tv/core/portal/ webcast_interactive/231762

Skincare vitamin Simply Nails By Angela supplements Nail care specialist & Nail artist Taking care of your skin should be an essential part of your health. It is, after all, your body’s largest organ. Lots of people are aware of looking after their skin by moisturising regularly and wearing an SPF, but have you ever considered taking vitamin supplements for your skin? Your skin is built up of layers, most cosmetic skincare moisturisers will reach the top layer of the skin called the horny layer. Cosmeceutical brands will reach the epidermis, but the only way to reach the deepest layer, the dermis (where skin cells are born), is by taking skincare supplements. Skincare supplements treat your skin from the inside out, they are actually better for your skin than topical creams. 1. It feeds skin over the entire body 2. Comes in an absorbable form 3. Feeds even the deeper layers of the skin, where skin cells are produced to help make the best changes for your skin The easiest way to compare this is if you were pregnant, you would look after your baby throughout the pregnancy, not just once it’s born. The same applies for your skin cells, you should look after them from the bottom layer not just the top layer. Advanced Nutrition Programme is one of the highest quality skincare vitamin supplement programmes on the market. Available at Bespoke you, speak to one of our team members for more information.

Can you really avoid Inheritance Tax ? By Ivan Lyons Director Investment Solutions, Worthing Inheritance Tax (IHT) was once famously described as “a voluntary levy, paid by those who distrust their heirs more than they dislike the Inland Revenue” by Roy Jenkins, a former Chancellor of the Exchequer.

When Gordon Brown was Chancellor of the Exchequer, he called IHT a “voluntary tax” because he said there were many ways to avoid it. It is clear, however, that not everyone has taken this message on board. The details of the estate of a well - known and recently deceased figure in the world of entertainment were recently published. In the will, £15 million was to be divided between her three children. Each son would receive just over £3 million, but the biggest beneficiary will be the Exchequer in the shape of a huge tax bill of nearly £6 million. The billions that could be saved… The office for Budget Responsibility released figures in 2014 which estimated that 1 in 10 deaths would be subject to IHT in the 2018/19 tax year. This number is eventually expected to reduce as a result of the new Main Residence nil- rate band introduced in the summer budget 2015, but the Exchequer is still expected to receive receipts of around £5.6 billion of IHT each year by 2020 / 2021. If you aim to take advantage of the voluntary nature of IHT, it is essential to do your tax planning in good time. That means starting now - as soon as possible – because most of us cannot foresee when we are going to die. The first step is to make an appointment with us and put together a plan of action. An initial meeting is without charge. What have you to lose – other than 25 minutes of your time? The value of tax reliefs depends upon your individual circumstances. Tax laws can change. The Financial Conduct Authority does not regulate Estate planning or tax advice. The value of your investment can go down as well as up and you may not get back the full amount you invested. Past performance is not a reliable indicator of future performance.

Sussex Community Foundation Trust Matching donors to needy people and causes. By Veronica Cowan This year the Sussex Community Foundation Trust - which awards grants to charities and community groups in Sussex, in four general grant rounds per year, and manages funds on behalf of a range of Kevin Sussex donors, conRichmond necting them to CEO groups and communities they want to support - celebrates its tenth birthday this year. The Duke of Richmond, who founded the trust, thought the establishment of such a foundation would highlight the smaller charities and community groups that are often overlooked when local people and companies think about giving to charity, but perhaps can’t identity where the need is. He said at the time. “Sussex Community Foundation has been set up to bridge this gap and to make it easy for local people and companies to give to local communities.” The Duke brought together a small steering group of
people from across the county, and following an extensive feasibility study, a number of individuals, companies and trusts were approached to become founderdonors. Their support funded the initial costs of setting up the organisation. Kevin Richmond was appointed as its first Chief Executive, and explains further: "The Duke of Richmond and Gordon had the idea to set up [the Foundation] in 2006 because he felt that many people see Sussex as a wealthy county which, in places, it is. However, there are some areas of Sussex that are in the top 10% most deprived in the UK. There are also many donors who wish to give locally.” The project started with enough funds secured to cover three years’ running costs, and the Foundation’s record in the past ten years has been impressive, in that it has given a massive £10 million in grants. The deprivation is still there, and this autumn, the Foundation will be updating, and relaunching, a report it commissioned in 2013 - Sussex Uncovered - which revealed the hidden disadvantage existing in the county. Mr. Richmond grew up in Somerset but fell in love with Sussex and Brighton, in particular, when he went to Sussex University at the age of 18. He has worked in a wide range of local and national charities, and was director of the Carers Centre for Brighton & Hove from 1999 to 2006. The Foundation, with its opportunity to put generous donors in touch with needy people and causes, was an attractive move for him: “Happily, we can bring donors together with the causes, charities and community groups they wish to support,” he said. Do they find it easy to get ambassadors? “We have found that many people are attracted to the Foundation, either as donors or other sorts of supporters, when they see what a great and quite unique sort of organisation it is, Mr. Richmond comments, adding: “We can maximise a donor’s charitable giving and put them in touch with smaller local charities and community groups across Sussex that they wish to support.” A recent example of this is the Sussex Lund grants programme, launched by Peter Baldwin and Lisbet Rausing, which is a collaboration between their charitable fund, Lund, and Sussex Community Foundation. It aims to support small-scale, practical projects that improve the ecology and landscape of the High Weald, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Charities, community groups, schools, churches, councils, farmers, landowners and anyone with a good idea about progressing this project were invited to apply for a grant of between £500 and £10,000. It attracted over 50 applications, and whilst the first call for applications has now closed, it will be open for applications again in the Spring of 2017.

30 Local Charity Other local grant recipients include Liaise @ Frontline, which provides free help and advice about debt and welfare benefit entitlements, at drop-in centres in Petworth and Storrington. This charity received a Competing in the Regional RDA grant o f Countryside Challenge £1,000 last year. Home Start Arun, whose volunteers visit families at home, giving practical and emotional support, which is directed at improving life chances for vulnerable children, received £5,000. And the healing power of animals was recognised when Hope in the Valley Riding for the Disabled Association received a grant of £973 last December. This charity caters for physically disabled children aged between 3 -16 and was delighted to “receive a generous award from the Noel Bennett Fund through the Sussex Community Founda-
SUSSEX LOCAL tion,” said Liz Mills, its Honorary Secretary. So how did they use the grant funding? “We spent the money on the upkeep of our ponies, without [which] we would not be able to function at all. Keeping and caring for ponies becomes more expensive every year and donations such as this are vital to our continuing existence. Items covered include shoeing, feed, grazing and routine vet bills,” explained Ms. Mills. The Foundation doesn't want to rest on its laurels, and Mr. Richmond believes there is still much more it could do. Accordingly, its target for the next four years is to reach a total of £17.5 million in endowment funds for Sussex and to give out £1.5 million in grants each year. He notes in a recent Newsletter

Is the weaker pound a good thing? By Richard Cohen JP FPFS ACII MCSI Chartered Financial Planner One of the most widely predicted but most dismissed outcomes of the UK voting to leave the EU has been the dramatic drop in the value of the pound against the value of most other currencies. This has massive consequences for the country, some positive, some negative. Firstly, it will drive up the cost of imported goods and services. For example, technology companies, whose base currency is almost always the US dollar, were quick to put up their prices in the UK. By contrast our exports to other countries become cheaper to people in those countries, which could improve the prospects of British exporters. Higher prices on imports will push up inflation giving the Bank of England a tricky job when it comes to setting interest rates. Traditionally, when inflation rises the Bank increases rates, which in turn pushes up the cost of borrowing and causes us to spend less, bringing inflation under control. However, at the moment an increase in base rate could push the economy into recession. At the time of writing in early July, the signals from the Bank’s Governor Mark Carney are
that the next movement in rates is more likely to be down rather than up. This could mean that savers end up earning even less interest on their savings, whilst higher inflation erodes the value of those savings even quicker. Companies that are listed on the London Stock Exchange but generate income and profits overseas will, all things being equal, see their profits increase when they convert them back into pounds. This could well push up dividends and share prices for investors. Of course this needs to be taken in the context of a slowing global economy potentially meaning lower profits to begin with! UK investors looking to invest overseas will find assets are considerable more expensive than they were before and will need to decide whether such an investment is still good value. In summary, there are going to be winners and losers. However, since no Government for decades has intentionally pursued a policy of deliberately weakening the pound, on balance its probably not a good thing. Con Men By Chris Ennis FRICS I was inspecting an elderly couple’s flat, and in our conversations a tale emerged which should certainly serve as a warning to us all. The couple had been receiving phone calls from ‘a nice man’ who was spinning them a line about their historic time share ownership. Apparently they had purchased a week or two of time share in Spain some 30 years before. My ears picked up since about 20 years ago I too had a time share experience. This plausible gentleman had persuaded them to part with £2000 by way of a ‘fee’ to repay a substantial sum of overpaid property maintenance contributions. My interest aroused, I listened to a tale that was typical of my own experience. The con man having built up a rapport with the elderly couple was asking for more cash, and his phone calls were becoming more persistent and aggressive. The final straw for them came when he instructed that they make a visit to their bank that day to transfer moneys to his account immediately. He said he would phone them back at 12.30pm to check that the funds had been transferred. Smelling a rat, the couple phoned the police who sent a PCSO to their property to listen in to the
Stop!
conversation. It was at this point that I became involved. Sure enough, at 12.30 precisely their phone rang and an educated man introduced himself. He enquired as to whether the money had been paid……..the PCSO took over the phone and announced the police presence. The effect was immediate …. He put the phone down without further comment. Proof enough that he was a con man and fraudster. Now, I recount this tale to remind us that there are ‘bad guys’ out there ready to prey on the elderly and the uncertain. Apparently there have been a number of instances locally where people have been targeted where there was a Time share connection. Over the years I have had time share touts on my phone, and they all get a very, very succinct response. I urge all Sussex Local readers to be so very careful when dealing with any unsolicited communications from strangers however plausible their tale… Chris Ennis FRICS is a Chartered Surveyor Tel: 01903 261217 email: surveyor1@talktalk.net

In Your Garden Monthly gardening ideas and tasks by Andrew Staib of Glorious Gardens If not you could think about a Rose covered Arbour, a live Willow chamber, creating a canopy with a weeping feature tree or a Summer house with a fridge full of cold drinks - you can even get lovely ‘Gypsey’ wooden caravans on line. You could even create a room with hedging inside your garden where you can sit and connect back to yourself away from the tugs of war of daily life! Step 3. Can you introduce curved paths and classical shapes like old pots and vases that give your space a gravity that hints of a time gone by, or the time that is timeless.
Creating more Romance in your Garden and therefore in your Life. Design a Romantic Garden for Yourself... Is your garden looking stale with barren or empty areas? Is it a place that continually invites you into its’ arms? Can your garden reflect the values you have about life and what is important? If not why not suffuse it with more romance? A place where lovers meet, a space to let yourself be overwhelmed with the sensuality of nature and where mysterious nooks and crannies can lead to a meditation on beauty and impermanence! Step 1. Are all your 5 senses delighted? The fragrance of climbing Roses, Chamomile paths and Lavender. The sound of gushing water and the wind in tall grasses. The furry touch of Lamb’s Ear and glossy Fatsia leaves. The sight of Romantic colour combinations. The taste of Grapes, Fennel, Apples and Chives. Step 2. For a trist with your loved one or to feel your love of nature in quiet contemplation ask yourself: is the seating cosy with a sense of intimacy.
Step 4. Can you let your romantic planting design be more relaxed and spontaneous like a summer party where the guests are slightly tipsy and people merrily bump into each other?

Where to go in August This is your very last chance to see Chiltern Lodge this year. An exquisite garden developed by Lady Collum for over 40 years, it features a series of interlocking rooms, each one with a different purpose and feel- a herb garden, pool room, water rill room and classical sandstone summer house. Look to abundant planting like tall ornamental grasses, Allium heads, Day Lillies, the scrabble of Nasturtiums and wild Geraniums. You can let your Wysteria be a bit more wild, let Roses climb up all the big trees and drainpipes, allow great heavy headed Peonies to flop about without stakes, and intersperse the planting with intense bright colour spots of Poppies, Delphiniums and Phlox- and of course lots of shrub Roses. To create a Romantic garden you need to ask yourself ‘what does love look like?’ -and then make this happen! A beautiful water feature reflecting the still heart of all things, a hot coloured flower border full of passion and generosity, a well crafted seat for two tucked away from the house catching the evening sun where

The Brown Dynasty at the Forge By Valerie Martin I will start at the beginning. It all began when John Mitchell the blacksmithof the day established the forge in Nepcote Lane in 1760 . His daughter, Martha, married Henry Brown on 18th February 1811 in Findon. Upon John Mitchell's death, Henry took over the forge. There were many children in the Brown family — Harriet (christened at St. John the Baptist Church on 3rd December 1815), James (christened there on 5th October 1817), Henry (8th August 1819), Ellen May (1821), Miriam (October 1822), Amelia (24th July 1824), Eliza (February 1827), Emily (March 1829) and Walter, of whom there is more later (christened in Findon on 8th January 1832). I understand that when her husband died, Martha Brown gallantly carried on the business for the next forty years. She lived in the cottage adjoining the forge with her family into her eighties. Martha's son, Walter (shown left) followed her at the forge until he took over as innkeeper at the Gun Inn. His nephew, William, c. 1874, succeeded him.
There were three forges in Findon in this era, owned by a very colourful trio; Mr. White, Mr. Green and, of course, William Brown, known later as Old Billy Brown, of the Nepcote Lane forge and shown above with arms akimbo in the centre. Do you notice how tiny the rider of the horse is… do you think he was a potential jockey? Here is an extract from Nancy Price's writings in 1955. Nancy (1880-1970) lived at High Salvington above Findon… "The itinerant blacksmith is rare now. I remember one who used to walk from Dorking to Findon. His face was smothered with black whiskers and he never appeared either to shave or wash. "Thaat," he once told me "wur sure way to catch colds, an' colds be nasty things, leadin' mostly to churchyard, a place I'm not seekin." He looked rather like a huge black hedgehog; I have seen him looming up out of the fog at my home in the heart of the Downs to enquire the way, a fierce apparition; if a stranger met him he would certainly not welcome such a companion, but I must confess that, knowing him to be harmless, I enjoyed his company. I found this fearsome looking man had his domestic problems. He talked pathetically of his wife who "hopped off her twig wi' nudder chap. I doan't say as I'm no picture postcard mesel', but if yer wur to view 'is dial yer wud call me a beauty. He's got a head like a bladder o' lard an' 'bout as mitch inside on' it. You could no more be content walkin' down this lone downside wi' likes o' him that I could be the scrounger like what he wur." "Perhaps you are well rid of your lady? I ventured. "Thaat doan't made it no pleasanter, thaat her should hev chose him arter knawin' me, an' thaat's what her's done".
through the door "Then I should think no more of her", I said. "Ah! thaat bean't so aisy. A chap can be sartin sure on bein' in the right an' her bein' the opposite, but can't help missin' a female, even the likes o' what her be. Thaat's nature". The photograph left is of Old Billy Brown in later years. By 1909, Old Billy Brown's son, Edward John (known to everyone as Ted), had completely taken over the heavy work as blacksmith at the forge. The forge has been altered and renovated over the years and the cottage attached to it was converted into a cycle shop that was run by another of Old Billy's sons, Walter.
Above is the Findon bakery and the Forge (on the right) in Nepcote Lane in the snow of the early 1900s. Here is an final extract from Nancy Price's writings where she talks of the forge when one day the blacksmith's son was working and told her to go to the house next door and have a cup of tea with his sister... "She had inherited her father's habit of wearing a particular hat all times and seasons; her choice was a large black felt the shape of a coal scuttle. Once, when the blacksmith's sister was ill, I found her still wearing her black felt in bed. In her case it was not absent-mindedness, it was deliberate; she felt more at ease with her hat on.
Local History
39
Today when I went into her house, tea was on the table. Tea always seems to be on the table in this part of the world; the spread included potatoes, pickles, meat and blancmange. Through her lattice window I could see a box hanging on the side of the shed. 'Three meals a day they birds have' she said, 'and I'll say they knows the times.' Sometimes when this lady was of a mind she would take me into another room, in which was gathered an extraordinary collection of china and glass, crinoline dresses, and other paraphernalia. All these things I believed she valued but never seemed to have the time or the mind to sort them out. There were also literally hundreds of photographs which served as a memory of bygone days and little else. All were heaped together in this unused room and the effect was rather like a rummage sale". Life once existed in the village of Findon because everyone’s work was in a way connected with the surrounding countryside and the land. The forge in Nepcote Lane was no exception and was ancillary to the indigenous industry of the rural community — the famous racing stables. I think that there is no place like a smithy for odds and ends and clattering heaps of metal. A friendly place and an excuse for a chat.
