Welcome... It’s February and many people will be buying cards and presents to give to loved ones on Valentine’s Day. Read about the origins of this annual event and who Saint Valentine was, in a light-hearted article ‘Is Romance Dead?’ by Cat Knowles-Fitton on page 17. Gay Richardson helps us sort out our wardrobes - the perfect job for a damp February Saturday - see our Style feature on page 24. Take advantage of the dry days to get out in the garden. Phocas lists the main tasks for February on page 27 along with his weather predictions. Our recipe this month on page 22 is a perfect Valentine’s Day dessert and is very simple to make too. We’re always pleased to publish items free of charge for local groups and charities. So, if you need help or want to spread the word about a good cause, please do get in touch. Anything non-commercial and of interest to our readers will be considered and if you can send a photograph as well, so much the better. Send your contributions to info@sussexlocal.net by 7th of the month for the following month’s magazine. We are also looking for photographs of local scenes for our covers. A small fee will be paid for any used. Have a great February, Kristina Words of Wit “Getting divorced just because you don't love a man is almost as silly as getting married just because you do.” ZSA ZSA GABOR

Conservatories I can remember when the first timber-framed and single-glazed conservatories made their appearance during the 1960s/70s. I still see some – usually in poor condition; the single-glazed roofs have cracked glazing, and timber roof bars are inevitably decayed. Condensation is often a problem, and single-brick thick walls are affected by penetrating dampness. The modern conservatory is quite a different structure and it has become an integral and important part of a family’s living space. Planning Permission is not usually required for a conservatory on a house or bungalow since this is considered to be “Permitted Development” subject to certain conditions. Separate conditions apply to flats and maisonettes. Whilst Building Regulations are normally required for extensions to a home, conservatories are very often exempt. Planning regulations were changed on 1st October 2008, and a good guide to the current position can be found on www.planningportal.gov.uk. Look for the mauve button marked “interactive house” (a quarter-way down and two-thirds across the page). Run the mouse over the types of modifications that can be made and the relevant

information will be shown. It’s all very clever! There are a number of defects that commonly affect conservatories, since the structure is usually built after the original dwelling. It is not unusual to find inadequate stormwater disposal at ground level where paving slabs adjoin the external framework. If conservatory framework is of timber construction, decay will surely follow. Where the conservatory roof adjoins main walls, a cavity tray should be installed, but this is frequently omitted to save cost and as a consequence moisture can enter the room. Glass roofs can become very dirty, but expensive self-cleaning glass can be installed. I have also seen a number of roofs where the “pitch” is insufficient to discharge stormwater to the gutters. Ventilation is also an important issue since these rooms can become very hot in the summer. The best structures incorporate electrically operated automatic roof vents.

Three Forts Challenge

Leave your Mark on A Heart

Start your training now; ‘The Tough One’ is back! On Sunday 1st May 2011 the challenging but rewarding Three Forts Challenge will be taking place at the Rotary Playing Fields in Hill Barn Lane, Worthing, and this time they are raising money for Ferring Country Centre.

Brighton based fundraiser, I leave my mark, whose first event on Boxing Day raised over £1,000, is inviting groups and businesses to donate a pound and 'leave their mark on a heart' in support of Winston’s Wish and their work with bereaved children.

Trevor Nash from Horsham Joggers said “‘A superb course with some of the steepest hills and best views of Sussex”. “This is a fantastic event and I would recommend it to anyone… If you’re bored of pounding tarmac – this is a must!” added Ewen Purcell, Worthing District Harriers. The marathon takes runners through beautiful Sussex countryside, over Devils Dyke, Chanctonbury Ring and Cissbury Ring. Known as ‘The Tough One’, runners are pushed to the extreme with 27 miles of mixed terrain and climbs of 3450 feet. For those who prefer a less demanding challenge, a half marathon will be taking place, as well as a 13 mile walk to Chantonbury Ring and a 5 mile ‘family friendly’ walk to Cissbury Ring. The event is fully marshalled with refreshments and changing facilities. The event kicks off with the marathon at 10am. The half marathon and walks start at 10.15am. Entry fees are: Marathon/half marathon: £15 for advanced registration (£20 on the day, if available) 13 mile Chanctonbury Ring walk: £10 5 mile ‘family friendly’ Cissbury Ring walk: £6

“This is a fun activity for work and leisure, for friends and families, any group of people, that will make a difference to children’s lives”, says Debbie Brown. “We are inviting the Sussex Community to support local children who have lost a parent or sibling by donating £1 and leave their mark on a heart. We aim to raise £5,000 for the work of Winston’s Wish in Sussex by the end of January”. The hearts will be displayed at the end of the Brighton Fringe Festival in May in one of the world’s largest collections of fingerprints; a representation of our commitment as a community to the future of our children. UpsideUpside-down Pear Cake A warming winter treat but made with fruit so counts as one of your ‘five a day’!

Ingredients • • • • • • • • •

1 oz butter 2 eggs, beaten 1 oz soft brown sugar Juice of ½ lemon 3 conference pears, peeled and halved 6 oz self-raising flour 4 oz margarine 4 oz caster sugar 1 teaspoon baking powder

Method Grease the base of a non-stick 8” pan. Pre-heat the oven to 200ºC, gas mark 6. Melt the butter in a frying pan. Add the sugar and stir until dissolved and beginning to caramelise. Stir in the lemon juice and then add the pear halves. Heat through. Arrange the pear halves, cut-side down, in the base of the tin and pour over any left-over caramel. Beat the margarine and sugar together until light and fluffy. Sieve the flour and baking powder together and gradually beat into the creamed mixture. Stir in the beaten eggs to make a batter. Spoon over the pears and bake for 10-15 minutes until golden and risen. Turn out onto a serving dish and serve with vanilla ice cream or thick whipped cream.
