July 2017 Cover Photo Downs above Findon by Sheila Mills

Welcome... I hope you are enjoying the summer so far. Our July issue has another bumper What’s On Guide featuring summer fairs, music events and family entertainment listings aplenty! Starting on page 4 with more listings on our website. We are lucky to live in a very affluent part of the country but unmanageable debt is still a real concern for many. Our main article highlights the free course for people with debt problems run by CAP (Christians against poverty) see page 26. This month you can win tickets to the fabulous Loxwood Joust, see page 30. Taking place over the first two weekends in August, the Loxwood Joust sees knights in full battle armour on thundering horses setting their lances at ‘full tilt’ against each other. You can win tickets to the event as well as VIP seats in the Royal Pavilion. You can also win tickets to the Firle Vintage Fair near Lewes, page 17 and John Otway’s new CD box set ‘Montserrat’ see page 50. Plus you can win tickets to see Jungle Book page 41 and Wind in the Willows page 17. In local news, oil exploration has begun in Adversane - read more on page 43. We also have our regular Charity & community news round-up starting on page 20. Finally, Andrew Staib our gardening guru gives ideas to help your garden ’sing’ this month, as well as July’s main gardening tasks. See page 38. Thanks for reading,

Kris & Jeff

Sussex Snippets Imm ers ive Cine mat ic Events are hosting a three day film event at Newhaven Fort over Armed Forces Weekend from the 23rd - 25th of July. The organisers sought out this location with the idea that it would be the perfect setting for an event themed around wartime Britain. Each evening there will be a screening of a military themed film with two hours of immersive experience beforehand: Friday 23rd: Saving Private Ryan; Saturday 24th: The Great Escape; Sunday 25th: Warhorse. Newhaven Fort was the location where many service personnel left Britain for the DDay landings. For this event guests are transported back to wartime Britain by taking advantage of this incredible location. Rockinghorse is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year and aims to raise £500,000 during its Golden Jubilee, to be split between 10 children’s centres and paediatric services in Sussex. The Wey & Arun Canal Trust and the National Trust are jointly celebrating the 150th anniversary of JB Dashwood’s adventurous journey down the River Wey along the Wey & Arun Canal towards the Solent. News from Sussex Police & Crime Commissioner Katy Bourne - Ahead of HMIC’s Legitimacy Inspection, the DCC said that the number of Stop and Searches had fallen from 24,000 in 2011 to 6,000 a year because of the concerted effort by the force to ensure stops were targeted, proportionate, justified and legitimate. Ms Bourne is also repeating the warnings of courier fraud crime, where you get a phone call from fraudsters posing as bank staff or, as in this case, a police officer. They persuade you that your bank account has been hacked or that they need your help to catch organised crime gangs and tell you to withdraw money and hand it to one of their trusted associates the courier- who will either keep it safe or use it in their fake police operation. Ms Bourne recently welcomed the first conviction in Sussex for exercising coercive and controlling behaviour in a relationship. Robert Conlon from St Leonards, was sentenced to four and a half years and also received an indefinite restraining order which prohibits him from any contact with his 28-year-old ex -partner and from entering Sussex. www.sussexpcc.gov.uk

Tesco Express Fundraiser

Colleagues at Tesco Express, Findon have organised events at the store to raise funds in support of Michel Ammolla. The money is for life extending drugs for his illness in order that he will survive long enough to see his young family grow up. A giant raffle was held involving more than 50 prizes donated by local businesses, local pubs, colleagues at Tesco and Tesco Express, Findon. Other events included Bugs Bunny making a rare appearance and helped by charging to have his photo taken with youngsters and parents alike. A guess the eggs jar and balloons let up into the air to remember their loved ones. A fitness bike was at hand and donations were made encouraging Tesco staff to get fit. The event was very well supported by all friends and customers of the local store and a superb sum of over £730.00 was presented to Michel at the store later on in the week. With special thanks to Helen, Lauren and Paula, who organised the very successful event.

Tenders invited for Dial-a-ride

Adur & Worthing Councils are inviting tenders for the provision of a ‘Dial-a-Ride Transport Service’ for people with additional needs in the area. Dial-a-Ride works through a telephone booking system and offers a bespoke door-to-door service for those unable to use or reach public transport. The Councils already offer this valued service, recognising that a lack of transport can be isolating for vulnerable people as well as a barrier to leading a fulfilling and productive life. They will be looking to secure the service with the award of a two-year contract starting from August 1. Contact 01903 221499 procurement@adur-worthing.gov.uk

Worthing Summer Play Streets Residents across Adur & Worthing are being urged to close off the streets for playtime this summer. So far hundreds of children have enjoyed being able to play in traffic-free roads outside their homes thanks to the Adur & Worthing Councils’ Play Streets scheme. With the summer holidays on the horizon, the local authority is encouraging communities to come forward and get their applications in - just in time for schools breaking up. In turn, Adur & Worthing Councils will not charge a fee for any applications submitted. Staff will also work hard to accept each one for the requested date, as well as re-arranging sessions cancelled due to bad weather. Shop is Village Heartbeat

Dear Editor Just having moved into Clapham and knowing we have a very friendly and professionally run local shop at it's heart bringing this small village together to share a cuppa and friendship is something I truly cherish. Apart from the wonderful church, it's all we have. I cannot imagine this village with no heart, just individuals remembering the community spirit that used to be. A fulfilling life is never about money, or profit, but about giving and sharing, maybe even occasionally losing out personally. The Trustees' letter delivered to everyone in Clapham on the 17th May is well written and informative and invites suggestions. I just want to suggest how with the shop, The Junction, everything would be resolved going forward, I like to think, being positive, the shop and cafe/restaurant, perhaps licenced premises, would allow this village green area to survive and even thrive, as profits could be used to have the grass cut and simple improvements made over time. Everyone would benefit, even if they only needed to buy one stamp once a year. Just imagine no shop, just a muddy field with horses or houses. Another suggestion might be to have another shop, far away in the Clapham/Patching hall by the main road where passing trade would make it very busy at times. Having two shops, both independ-

Deadline to the Breadline By Richard Cohen FPFS ACII MCSI Chartered Financial Planner Recent research conducted by Legal & General as part of their “Deadline to the Breadline” study shows on average UK employees could be on the breadline in just 32 days if they lost their main source of income due to sickness, accidental injury or death. Of course, averages can hide a multitude of sins, as shown by the fact that a quarter of people would run out of money within a week and a further quarter would run out of funds the next day. Everyone has three possible solutions to this problem. Don’t die, have an accident or get sick. Build up more savings. Insure your income. I think everyone would agree that solution one is outside of your control. If the second solution was realistic then there wouldn’t be a need for articles such as this! That only leaves the third option. Whilst, most people with dependants recognise the need for life insurance, very few seem to recognise the need to insure their income. Less than one in fourteen people have any kind of income protection insurance.

SUSSEX LOCAL ent of each other, would allow the Clapham shop to thrive as a very local and very much loved, unique and individual hub for this wonderful friendly village. The new Trustees emphasise they have no money. I am so happy they are open to making this work for all of us in Clapham. Yours faithfully, Graham Swain. Clapham.

Join mission to help vulnerable local children On the 22nd July SpiderMan will be leading a children’s Super Hero Fun Run around Tilgate Lake, to raise vital funds for local charity Home-Start CHAMS. Each year Home-Start CHAMS help hundreds of local children in families dealing with issues such as mental health, financial problems, or serious illness. Their trained volunteers work with the families, helping parents to overcome these challenges and give young children the best possible start in life. Choosing from 1.5km or 500m distance, this event is open to all ages and abilities - under 11's must be accompanied by an adult. For tickets visit: www.superherofunrun2017.eventbrite.co.uk www.homestartchams.org.uk A good Income Protection policy will provide a tax free monthly payment of half of your gross salary, either until you are fit to return to work, you die or you reach your chosen retirement age. The policies have a deferred period, that being the length of time you must be off work before it starts paying out and the longer the deferred period the lower the premium. A policy with a deferred of one month, which would meet the needs of the “average person” above, would cost around £30 per month for £1,000 of cover for protection until age 68. If you have no savings at all and need “day one” cover the premium increases to around £43. This is based on a thirty year old administration manager, in normal health. In case you’re yet to be convinced of the need I’ll finish with a quote from Winston Churchill on insurance. “If I had my way, I would write the word “insure” upon the door of every cottage and upon the blotting book of every public man, because I am convinced, for sacrifices so small, families and estates can be protected against catastrophes which would otherwise smash them up forever.” For more details visit www.nsurefinancial.co.uk or to arrange a free review please call 01903 821010

SUSSEX LOCAL

Free help for debtors Registered charity Christians Against Poverty help people to manage their finances According to recent figures, there are almost nine million people in debt in the UK, that’s around one in six adults. Being unable to keep up with bills and other financial commitments can result in people spiralling into debt and evidence shows that often the people who are most in need of help and advice on how to manage their finances, those who are teetering on the brink of debt or in debt already, either have no idea how to find this advice or else do not seek it until it’s too late. Registered charity Christians Against Poverty (CAP) offers help to anyone struggling with their finances, finding it difficult to budget or in debt. The charity believes that “nobody should be held hostage by debt and poverty,” and wants to help people escape the grip of poverty. CAP’s aims are threefold, to give people the skills to improve their money management, to encourage people to look at their own finances and make changes that are tailored specifically to their needs and to enable people to successfully budget, save and keep out of debt – supporting people to take control of their finances. The organisation offers a range of courses designed to do just this.

Chris Jay CEO and Chairman

The CAP Money course is a free money management course that teaches budgeting skills, promising attendees they will be on top of their finances in just a few weeks. The course is made up of three sessions and is open to everyone – irrespective of faith, income, financial circumstances or knowledge. Each session lasts two hours including refreshments, is informal and confidential and there are specially tailored courses available for Students, Youth and Kids available.

CAP was established in the late nineteen-nineties by John Kirkby, who was employed in the consumer finance industry and found himself in considerable debt. He managed to turn his life around and established the charity in his hometown of Bradford to help others in unmanageable debt. Since then CAP has grown to have over 290 debt centres helping more than 21,000 people a year out of debt and poverty. CAP developed the CAP Money Course In 2008 and it is the largest provider of face-to-face financial education in the UK.

“Why Not Have A Fresh Look Kitchen Makeover?”

Do I have to re-tile, do my flooring or change my worktops and appliances?

Having a new kitchen installed is often a big hassle that takes weeks to achieve. It is often costly, and you sometimes have to make sacrifices or cutbacks because the budget you have does not stretch to what you want. With a kitchen makeover, you will still achieve the main objective... a fresher, brighter, more contemporary kitchen but at under half the cost of a new kitchen. We can simply change the face of your kitchen by changing the doors, worktops and accessories.

No, not at all, if these items are fine then why replace them, it possible to just change your worktops only as no job is too small for us.

How does a makeover work? As kitchen cupboards are often in great condition, we can fit made to measure doors manufactured and built here in the UK. We can also reface your units, or panel them so they match the colour of the door you have chosen. We can also replace the kick boards, lighting pelmet and cornice to the same colour too and because our kitchens are fitted by British craftsmen.

My doors are an unusual size, I can’t find replacements in any shop! Our doors are made to measure and the hinge positions are drilled on site meaning an exact fit for your cupboards.

Do you have a showroom? No. This is so we can keep the costs down. Companies with showrooms are often 15-20% more expensive. We will, however, bring a showroom to you as we have samples of doors, worktops, handles and hinges. For your free no obligation quotation, please David or Tony at Fresh Look Kitchen Makeovers on 01903 443333 or emaiLinfo@freshlookkitchenmakeovers.co.uk

28 Charity Profile Peter Sutton is local coordinator for the CAP Money course in Sussex, having been trained as a CAP Money coach in 2010, whilst living in North London. In 2013 he moved to Chichester and introduced the course to his church, Immanuel Church in Graylingwell. Peter is, he says: “A great advocate of churches working together and since moving here I have tried to expand awareness of this fantastic course throughout West Sussex as there seemed to me to be a real need for this type of financial management/ budgeting course.”

The organisation has a relationship with the Department for Work and Pensions, who regularly refer people with money issues to CAP. The services provided by CAP are completely free of charge, and the charity receives its income from donations, fundraising dinners, sponsored events and regular givers, who provide the majority of CAPs income. In fact, 63 per cent of the charity’s income comes from individuals, with

He is keen to further extend CAP’s network and to encourage as many churches as possible to offer these courses to the community. “Churches I have contacted have all been supportive and we have been running courses in a variety of venues in Chichester, Bognor and Littlehampton.” Peter estimates that around 6000 people go through a CAP Money Course every year and that with 46 active churches in West Sussex, there is potential for around 200 people go through a course in West Sussex a year. In addition to the courses CAP has debt centres in Chichester, Bognor, Littlehampton, Worthing, Crawley and Shoreham-on-sea, and also in Brighton, Bexhill and Hastings; and there are currently job clubs available in Billingshurst, Horsham and Chichester. Although all of the courses are run by a Christian charity, the services provided by CAP are open to all irrespective of faith or no faith at all. Peter says that, “CAP encourages all who wish to do the course to attend. The CAP money course is not an evangelical event and focuses purely on the financial issues.” Since its inception the charity has grown enormously, and garnered a number of awards – including being named Debt Advice Provider of the Year at the Collections and Customer Service Awards 2015 – and has a wide range of supporters. One of whom is Martin Lewis from Money Saving Expert, who regularly recommends CAP to people who are in debt and struggling to cope, and is quoted as saying: “CAP is unsurpassed in its debt counselling.” Peter tells me that CAP has enormous credibility within both the private and public sectors; the charity’s website carries endorsements from, amongst others, HRH Prince Charles, former Prime Minister David Cameron and the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby.

nineteen per cent from church donations and the bulk of the remaining eighteen per cent coming from charitable activities and charitable trusts. Peter says, “We never give financial advice on a CAP Money Course, we just facilitate an amazing DVD based course full of handy principles to get your finances in order.” The DVDs used during the course are also available on line from the CAP Money website, and also focus on many whose lives have been transformed following attendance. In addition to the existing CAP Debt help and CAP Money Course, there are also CAP Job Clubs – to help people support back into work – and CAP Release Groups - helping people to tackle addictions. The organisation has recently piloted a new venture – CAP Life Skills, which equips people to live well on a low income and was launched at Westminster in March at an event attended by around seventy guests, including thirty-one MPs. Interestingly, when I ask Peter Sutton what he sees as the greatest challenge faced by the charity, he doesn’t reply with the usual – and understandable – response from those involved in the charitable sector, namely funding, but rather that the greatest challenge CAP Money faces is: “getting people to know about CAP and encouraging them to come.” CAP Money courses are scheduled locally on a regular basis, and at a variety of venues and times. Testing the Tivoli Editor Kris Thomas road tests the SsangYong Tivoli ELX When I first set sight on the angular, stylised looking car I thought it looked quite formidable. However when I sank into the comfortable seats and turned on the AC I felt very much at home. The first thing I noticed was the space, the interior is very roomy and the cream and grey upholstery gave off that luxurious ’leather’ aroma.

The keyless ignition emitted a jolly little tune as I started the engine, welcoming me on board. This was a taste of the many friendly touches SsangYong have incorporated into the Tivoli ELX. I was somewhat apprehensive about using the touch screen, expecting the satellite navigation map to take an age to load, however it was quick and intuitive to use. My children loved playing around with the controls and settings. It has full European TomTom navigation as well as Bluetooth connectivity and, in no time at all, I had hooked-up my phone and was enjoying my own music. One of my favourite features of the ELX was the rearview camera which makes reversing and parking a doddle. Other nifty extras include the individual passenger and driver temperature controls plus a useful memory feature to save all the settings.

Motoring

31

Driving speed is shown in a clear, digital display right in front of you as well as on the more traditional circular speedometer. As I was driving, the car beeped to warn me when there were speed cameras or if the speed limit had changed - helpful little things... Rear load space is among the best in its class at 423 litres. I can vouch for this as I managed to fit a good number of magazine boxes and shopping in the back, without putting down the seats. Other safety features include a forward collision warning and autonomous emergency brakes. If a collision appears imminent, the braking system will intervene. Optional ‘lane control’ takes over if you start deviating from a traffic lane, and assists the car in staying toward the centre of the lane by applying a small amount of steering force. It is a peculiar sensation when the car takes control but I would certainly use it for motorway driving and found this and the other safety features very reassuring. The car is so safe it was awarded with an NCAP 4 Star Rating, partly due to its seven airbags, which is quite an astonishing feat. Another nice touch, not normally seen on cars in this competitive price bracket, was the wing mirrors folding away when I locked the car. Overall I found the Tivoli ELX to be a delightful blend of comfort and good handling. If you want a spacious family car with a large range of user friendly features then the SsangYong Tivoli ELX may be for you. Starting price of the basic Tivoli is £13,300. The ELX, as reviewed above, starts at £16,800. Arrange a test drive with Clarion Cars, 84 South Street, Tarring, Worthing, BN14 7LS. 01903 234363 or visit www.clarioncars.co.uk

In Your Garden Monthly gardening ideas and tasks by Andrew Staib of Glorious Gardens So how do we free up our garden and make it feel abundant? One question you can ask is how can I let the plant off it’s leash. The other is do I need to move it or pull it out and start again. A good example of the first point is how we treat our Philadelphus. This popular Orange Blossom is basically a multi stemmed small tree that we treat as a shrub. It has a very tall, arching nature, sending lots of stems up from the base to rejuvenate itself each year. Most well intentioned gardeners will just cut it into a 5 foot rectangle after flowering each year. But if you

Designing a Graceful Garden Letting Plants Sing As a garden designer I am often called in to renovate a garden that has become tired or stultified. Two problem elements often stand out for me. The first is that plants are not in the right place. This leads to owners having to prune them to size on a regular bases. If you are wanting a tight, formal look to your garden this can work out well if the right plant for controlled pruning has been chosen. However, plants are just normally hacked back because they are too big for the allotted space and the poor householder has no choice. The second problem I often encounter is that the planting has no real connection to the house. Neither the texture or structure of the plant, it’s leaf colour or personality relate to the house and its characteristics. It goes without saying that houses tend to be large and hard objects but often the planting is equally hard and atrophied, pruned to fit into a border rather than being free to ‘do it’s thing’. Nigel Phillips, a well known Sussex garden designer, has a wonderful way of looking at it. He says - Ask yourself a simple question - Does that plant in that place SING? That is, does it embody all the beauty and unique characteristics of its nature without looking bound, chopped, squashed or held back. It is surprising what answers you will get once you start asking yourself this question of each plant in your garden.

through the door want it to 'sing' the best way to prune is to thin out a third of the oldest stems right down to the ground and encourage the new stems to freshen up the plants. This will leave you with a graceful yet very tall plant, about 12 foot. The second issue becomes - Now I have let my plant sing, it too big for its spot? Then you will need to be brave and either move it or pull it out. Getting rid of plants is a whole issue in itself. In my oil painting class what we struggle with a lot is not just getting something to look right but knowing when to start a whole area again in the service of getting the whole picture to work, even though what we have done ‘looks good’. This courage to ‘destroy’ is arguably more important than the skill in making something look presentable. If you can muster the courage to take out something then you find you can start working towards a greater goal. We often baulk at taking out a healthy plant but if a garden is to work and inspire you and others with the beauty of nature then the sacrifice is worth it. And in my experience once you have the nerve to do it, you end up planting a richer garden with possibly more plants than before.

Look at the shrubs you have Every plant has its own characteristics, forged from thousands if not millions of years of growth in particular habits. The amazing thing is how adaptable they are. If you work with them rather than against what they want to do, your garden will have a natural and effortless feel and you won’t be feeling there is a fight on your hands every weekend. You can let the shrubs you have let their hair down this Summer and see what happens. They might go up and out in which case you could try a different type of pruning which would be thinning out whole branches rather than chopping them into a round shape. If they do get too big you can think about training them against a wall, moving or removing them. Here are some of the common garden shrubs that you could re think. Rosa rugosa - leave at the back of the border to become wonderfully leggy letting it throw its blooms over the plants at the front. Escalonia - this can be thinned and the small

38 Gardening branches at its base can be stripped back to the core branches creating a nice looking ornamental tree. Acuba japonica - let it go and see what happens. Again it can be allowed to stretch out if planted deep in a shady corner rather than in a prime spot in the border. Weigela - this popular flowering shrub often gets pruned into a ball but it has the most wonderful fountain of branches. Again the lower branches can be cleaned up and old branches taken right out. Spirea - same as above There are so many other plants that you can give a green light to this Summer. What’s the worse that can happen? They look untidy and you can just neaten them up again!

The National Garden Scheme Founded in 1927 the scheme encouraged people to open up their gardens to the public to raise money for the newly formed district nurses role in poor urban areas. It has moved on since then, from “a shilling a head” to raising over 20 million pounds for a variety of charities in the last 10 years. If you go to the NGS website and type in ‘Sussex’ plus the dates you are free and you will find 36 gardens that are opening their gates in July though each garden is just open for a day or two only. Most serve tea and cakes so you can burn off 15 calories by walking around and then put on 600!

What to do in July  Deadhead perennial flowers as they will often create a new flush of buds as you inhibit the energy of the plant going into seed production. Plus the first flush of Hybrid and Patio roses may have finished so deadhead them back to a couple of new, outward facing buds  Bring out any tender plants out from your conservatory now  Ponds - Make sure any ponds don’t get swamped with blanket weed  Watering - Any new plants that went in this year will dry out much faster than established plants as their roots are not as plugged into the surrounding soil.  Keep pinching out side shoots on your tomatoes  Keep sowing salad for a continuous crop

What constitutes adultery in Divorce? By Karen Fleming Consultant Solicitor at Bennett Griffin Worthing Many In order to divorce your spouse, under the laws in England and Wales, the Petitioner must prove irretrievable breakdown plus one of the five facts:  Unreasonable behaviour  Adultery  Desertion for 2 years  Separation for 2 years with the consent of the Respondent to divorce  Separation for 5 years whether the Respondent consents or not. The definition of adultery under our law is: One party to a marriage having sexual intercourse with a member of the opposite sex and that party cannot continue to live with them. The adultery must have been in the last 6 months, (if you still live together) otherwise the adultery has been ‘condoned’. Interestingly, even if the parties have been separated for a long period, say 10 years, and haven’t divorced, should one spouse commence a relationship with a member of the opposite sex, the other spouse can cite adultery and divorce on this basis. Many people are shocked by this, BUT remember those people are still married, aren’t they?

Despite so much progress with regard to equality in recent years, and the introduction of same sex marriage into our jurisdiction, there is a clear anomaly. The grounds for a divorce in same sex marriage are the same as above, but that means this: In a gay divorce, one party can only cite adultery if the other has cheated with a ‘person of the opposite sex’. Interestingly, in a recent Canadian case, this, the judge was faced with the same dilemma and decided that the definition and the law should apply to same sex marriage. Many other jurisdictions consider that adultery should apply in same sex marriage as it does in hetrosexual marriage. Cheating is cheating. Under Muslim law, adultery is sexual intercourse by a person (whether man or woman) with someone to whom they are not married. Is the way ahead then that adultery, whether in hetrosexual marriage or homosexual marriage, should be defined as ‘sexual relations’ (as Clinton famously said) with another person, whether male or female?. Broadford Bridge Oil Drilling starts near Adversane We have received the following reader letter: Dear Editor UK Oil and Gas plc (UKOG) began exploratory drilling for oil at the Broadford Bridge site, on Adversane Lane, near West Chiltington at the end of May. They brought a towering rig in before anyone noticed. It now disturbs the views for many and disrupts the rural peace. Worryingly, a lot of locals remain uninformed about the company’s true plans. The company is using a permit for conventional drilling previously awarded to Celtique Energie, in 2013. It is waiting to hear on its submission to the Environment Agency for a variation to that permit to allow unconventional exploration techniques including the use of chemicals that could risk our water supplies.

Local Issues

43

Dr Roger Smith for the Campaign to Protect Rural England, shared geological evidence of a fault near the site, which could result in the ground shifting if disturbed - as happened at Preese Hall Lancashire, causing the earth to shake in Blackpool. He warned if drilling went wrong, liquids and chemicals could get into the public drinking water supplies to 100,000 homes via the River Arun. Some of the chemicals to be used – listed in the Safety Data Sheet submitted by UKOG to the Environment Agency (EA) - are carcinogenic and two are toxic to aquatic invertebrates. Any leak of such chemicals could cause havoc to an internationally important Special Protection Area wildlife site on the river. Is this the ZERO impact on the water supplies, which they talk of. And who will be monitoring this anyway? Have baseline tests been done by the EA to see if any changes occur as the drilling goes on?

UKOG director Stephen Sanderson has said to make their operation worthwhile they have to drill wells, ‘almost back-to-back so it becomes… an industrialised process’. Is this what we want all over the Weald, polluting the air, soil and water we rely on for our very lives?

UKOG say, “Onshore oil and gas exploration and production is among the most regulated industries in the UK and, therefore, one of the world’s safest and environmentally rigorous sectors.” But the Conservatives are planning to relax local planning scrutiny and with cutbacks in EA resources will the regulation be safe enough? Many more questions need to be asked before further drilling takes place. Dr David Smythe, Emeritus Professor of Geology at Edinburgh University has raised several:

In a letter delivered to nearby residents before the public meeting in Pulborough on 30th April, UKOG shared ten ‘facts’ about Broadford Bridge, clearly to reassure residents that it’s all perfectly safe, clean and beneficial. Yet there is much evidence to the contrary and experts told a different story.

Firstly, the Weald is a mature, albeit minor, oil province; the thin limestones within the Kimmeridge Clay have been penetrated many times by exploration wells, and the oil price has historically been far higher than today's $50 per barrel. Extended-reach horizontal drilling has been around for 25 years.

The site at Wood Barn Farm, Adversane Lane, Billingshurst, RH14 9EB (c) John Houston

44 Local Issues

SUSSEX LOCAL

So, given that many major companies such as BP, Shell and Conoco have looked at and tested these limestones, and that the technology has been in place for a long time, why have these limestones not hitherto been exploited as conventional plays? Professor Richard Selley, an expert on oil seepages, published in 1992 an account and listing of 173 known UK oil and gas seepages. One of his sections is headed 'Petroleum seepages of the Wealden basin', within which he discusses 11 seepages. Why does UKOG claim that there are no seepages in the Weald Basin, when they have been known about and documented for years? Furthermore, I believe the geology expected to be encountered submitted to the EA by UKOG is seriously in error and internally inconsistent; this is because it is a copy of the Celtique Energie column drawn up for the latter's well, directed at the Triassic target. There is section absent where it should be present, and vice-versa. Does UKOG hold the regulatory authorities in such contempt that it does not take the trouble to prepare an updated prognosis along with the expected deviated well-track, or does it not simply not understand the geology? In addition, the US unconventional gas and oil plays have proved, after about 15 years to have been a financial disaster. The Wall Street Journal claimed at the end of 2015 that the industry carries more than $200 billion in debt. Up to 135 companies were in danger of bankruptcy, as of September 2016. The useful life of unconventional wells, whether gas or oil, is very short - about 5-8 years, with most of the production coming within the first 2 years. Unconventional exploitation was originally designed for an oil price of at least $80 to break even. UK exploration and production costs will be far higher - perhaps double - than those of the US. Why does UKOG and its subsidiaries persist in promoting, with newsworthy but technically unsustainable claims, what will be almost certainly an uneconomic exploration agenda in the UK?” Surely, if we value our countryside, water and health these questions should be fully answered before any more potentially destructive drilling takes place and before we know if it even makes economic sense. Yours faithfully, Broadford Bridge Action Group Find out more: facebook.com/broadfordbridgeaction action@broadfordbridgeaction.co.uk Editor’s note. The UK Oil and Gas website (www.ukogplc.com) has a page on the Broadford Bridge site (www.ukogplc.com/page.php?pID=115) with a link entitled “latest information for residents”. This leads to a document entitled “Broadford Bridge: The Facts Not The Fiction”.

The underground explanation footprint (c) UKOG POC In it, Stephen Sanderson, Executive Chairman, writes “We have been fully aware of a pressure group in the area who have been spreading extraordinary levels of misinformation about our planned activity, which is causing unnecessary alarm to some residents.” “The main concern has centred around us using ‘acidisation’ techniques which has been erroneously and mischievously linked to massive hydraulic fracturing, ‘fracking’. We are not fracking. We do not want to or need to, because the Kimmeridge Limestones rocks that we are targeting are naturally- fractured by mother nature.” “Although much of this subject has been dealt with in our .... document ‘10 Things You Need to Know About Broadford Bridge’, we now feel compelled to give a more detailed explanation:” and he goes on to list eight points to support his case. He then continues “We fear that the ill-informed pressure group will throw any counter information back at us with more and more unfounded accusations. All we can do it deal in facts, not fiction.” and lists a further seven ‘factual answers’ to ‘false claims’ which he says have been made by the pressure group. The document makes interesting reading, and is certainly useful for anyone trying to make sense of what, for most, is a complicated subject. We aren’t taking sides on this matter as we haven’t researched the detail. However we do think that if Mr Sanderson, a (presumably highly remunerated) chairman of a PLC who is trained in a specialist technical industry - is aiming to win over local support for the project, he might take a somewhat less bullying tone. He might also recognize that one person’s “illinformed pressure group” is another person’s group of ordinary residents who, without his specialist knowledge or funding, are trying - in their spare time to grapple with a highly technical issue which they feel could blight not only their own homes and lives, but those of many generations to come.

5 Top Tips for Planning Your Financial Future By Ivan Lyons, MD Investment Solutions, Worthing What kind of retirement do you want? Spending some time working out a plan of action is important as there are options open to you and the decisions you make today can affect your future. Our Five Top Tips to help you get started include: 1. Your retirement journey Whatever stage of planning you’re at, spending an hour now to check you’re on track for the retirement you want could make a big difference later on. The first step is setting yourself a retirement target – once you have worked out how much you want to live on in retirement, you can start planning around it. If you haven’t already done this, we can help, a great place to start is www.changeyourlifeinanhour.co.uk 2. Plan the retirement you want It’s important to focus on the sort of life you would like in retirement first – and then find the retirement solution to fit it. You can fund your retirement with more than just your pension savings, so consider all of the options and don’t forget to include the State Pension. The State Pension is based on your National Insurance contribution and you are entitled to it when you reach your State Pension age. Find out more at www.gov.uk/new-state-pension. 4. Tax relief benefits The Government will normally give you tax relief that helps increase the value of your plan. If you are a higher or additional rate tax payer, you may be able to claim additional tax relief via your tax return. You can normally get the same tax relief if your employer makes workplace pension contributions out of your pay before deducting tax. 5. Keeping track of your pension savings Finding a pension you’ve lost track of may be as easy as making a quick phone call:

 If you can remember the pension provider, call them directly

 If you can’t remember the provider, but paid in through a company pension scheme, call the Company and they should be able to help.

The 1930s House By Chris Ennis FRICS At the turn of the century it is estimated that only one in ten families owned their own property…most were tenants. Many families aspired to own their own homes in a bid to move away from poor living conditions and overcrowding. In the 1930’s building societies found themselves with funds available, and during a period of falling interest rates and increasing demand there started a housing boom. For these reasons up to 300,000 houses were being constructed annually and by the outbreak of WW2 nearly half the population owned their own property. The typical 1930’s house remains popular for many good reasons. The properties are usually located on well-placed estates at the outskirts of town centre. Whilst older Edwardian estates were designed in geometric rows, the larger 1930’s properties were located in wider tree lined streets and crescents. The 1930’s house often made provision for onsite car parking and many had garaging facilities which by today’s standards can accommodate only the smallest of cars. The 1930’s house was constructed with certain style features. Typically, the roof design was pitched ridged

and hipped and covered in plain clay tiles. Walls were formed in cavity brickwork quite often with faced brickwork to the front elevation with cheaper brick to the side and rear. Timber windows were arranged in casement style often incorporating leaded coloured glass panels. Ornate front entrance doors were fitted with an oval glazed panel as a decorative feature. Bay windows were a common feature as were entrance porches with arched brickwork in the upper part. The house of this period would incorporate a covered entrance porch, hall, 2 separate reception rooms and a kitchen at ground level with 3 bedrooms and a bathroom at first floor level. There was no central heating and hot water was supplied by an ‘Ideal’ ODE solid fuel boiler in the kitchen or a gas fired geezer over the bath in the bathroom. When I inspect a house of this age, I look for common defects such as wall tie corrosion, dampness, wood beetle infestation, timber decay, settlement issues, structural stability, and roof coverings amongst many other possible deficiencies. “Call me before you buy your dream home”

To make sure your dream home doesn’t hide any nasty surprises! Shockingly, many people do not obtain a professional survey before buying a house. This can result in future misery and thousands of pounds of repair work. I will report on the current condition of a property and also forewarn you of any major problems which may arise. I am a fellow of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, and have over 30 years local experience. Based in High Salvington, I pride myself on my speedy and personal service. Feel free to call me for an informal chat.

48 Local History

More dips into local history by Valerie Martin Hopefully some interesting glimpses into the past are below...and some you have not previously come across...

Above: match that swing of 111 years ago.

The swinging sign of the Gun Inn at The Square in Findon in 1900. Winton's Stores is on the left... and Grey Point can just be seen on the right. Straight ahead is Nepcote Lane leading up to Nepcote Green.

It is interesting to remember that the Worthing Golf Club was formed in 1905 and its first course was opened the following year by six-times Open Championship-winner Harry Vardon and five-times Open Championship-winner James Braid. The above momentous scene dates from 23rd October 1906 at the Worthing Golf Club... Cissbury Ring is in the background. The golfer being so intently watched by the crowds is aforementioned James Braid.

Above: a vintage photograph of nearby Tarring. Date: unknown. When I originally clapped my eyes on this scene I could not help but wonder if these properties were still standing? After a little investigation I found they were called Stents Cottages and stood at the upper end of the High Street. Alas, they were demolished 82 years ago. Two garages are now standing on the site. But none of this tells me when the photograph was taken so I am none the wiser!

Above is the Square in Findon. In the days when Grey Point in the centre of Findon was an AA appointed hotel. A multitude of further bygone photographs of our area can be found on Valerie Martin's website, as well as an ongoing record of life through the centuries in Findon. Visit www.findonvillage.com

Win John Otway’s Signed Box Set CD ‘Montserrat’ When John Otway has an idea he usually carries it through. Others may wilt at the first hurdle, trip at the second or just plain retire hurt at the third. But not Otway if he can help it. ‘Where do real rock stars go to make an album?’ he mused...and the answer was loud and clear, Montserrat. Montserrat was the go to place in the 70s and 80s for all major rock stars to make their records - The Rolling Stones, Elton John, Dire Straits, The Police, the list goes on. Then two hurricanes later and one erupting volcano and it all changed. Air Studios fell into disrepair, the capital city became a modern day Pompeii and half the island became uninhabitable due to the spread of ash. Until now.... Otway liked the idea of following in the footsteps of the stars and wasn’t going to let a little thing like weather conditions and topography deter him. In January 2016 he visited the Island with a view to recording. The people of Montserrat are incredibly proud of their iconic musical status and when the Otway team arrived they were greeted at the airport by the Premier, several members of the cabinet and Miss Montserrat.

Otway had not recorded an album for over 10 years and, though he is best known for his self-effacing humour, his avid fan base are also very fond of his song-writing. His Kickstarter campaign generated £40k in a month. “It was a big job,” says Otway, “I wanted to make a better album than Steel Wheels – and I did!” The 11 track CD, ‘Montserrat’, was released in May 2017 on Red Bowler records. www.johnotway.com.

Win a ‘Montserrat’ box set To be in with a chance of winning answer the following question: Q: When did Otway last record an album? a) 10 years ago b) 20 years ago c) 1 year ago Send your answer and full contact details including daytime telephone number to: ’Montserrat’ Competition, PO Box 2237, Pulborough RH20 9AH or email competitions@sussexlocal.net Winner will be first entry drawn after 31st July 2017. Findon Valley Residents’ Association Report Local Issues Jeff Swann, FVRA Highways Environment Officer, is keen to share the following information to help local residents who have Internet access to report on local issues to the relevant people in the appropriate authorities. To report any highway, footpath and lighting issues: visit www.love.westsussex.gov.uk/reports/home If you have a smartphone with a camera, you can download the ‘Love West Sussex’ app and report the issue/danger with your photo in a few minutes. To report any anti-social driving and abandoned vehicles: www.operationcrackdown.org To report on any other issues relating to parking: www.adur-worthing.gov.uk/parking

To report any vehicles for sale along the highway A24 Findon Road: simon.jones@adur-worthing.gov.uk To report on driving school vehicles causing problems: kelly.galton@dvsa.gov.uk For those people who do not have a computer, smartphone and no Internet access, please call 07711 679724 or send a text message and Jeff will assist you in any way he can. “We all want to have a safer environment in Findon Valley,” Jeff Swann says. “My aim is to keep our community fully aware of the main contacts in our local authorities to report on any concerns. We’re in need of some volunteers to come forward and help us in a ‘Speed Watch’ initiative to observe vehicles’ driving speeds in Findon Valley. If you’re keen to be involved then email jeff.swann@findonvalley.org.” It’s thanks to an idea from Jeff at the 2016 AGM suggesting an Outdoor Gym on The Gallops that led to the success of Elizabeth Sparkes, Worthing Councillor, in securing the funding. The public consultation took place in May and we await the results with interest.
