Welcome... It’s holiday time again, towards the end of this month the schools break up for the summer. If you’re looking for things to do over the summer break then there are plenty of events listed in our What’s On guide starting on page 4 - and more listed on our website at www.sussexlocal.net. Whether you are at home or away this month do find time to enter our competition to win tickets to the Loxwood Joust - see page 16. This unique family event takes place over two weekends in August and sees armoured knights on horseback jousting along with other terrific Mediaeval attractions. We have a family ticket up for grabs which include VIP seats in the Royal Pavilion for the best views of the jousts. Our main article this month is a feature on West Sussex charity Whizz Kids. Providing equipment and support, this worthy charity is radically improving lives of local disabled youngsters. See page 28. Designing with Perennials is this month’s gardening topic on page 34 along with the main monthly tasks. Our July recipe (p26) is perfect for the barbecue (let’s hope the weather co-operates!) and our local history article on page 41 is an eerie tale about an executed highwayman and his ghost. Thanks for reading,

Skincare vitamin supplements Taking care of your skin should be an essential part of your health. It is, after all, your body’s largest organ. Lots of people are aware of looking after their skin by moisturising regularly and wearing an SPF, but have you ever considered taking vitamin supplements for your skin? Your skin is built up of layers, most cosmetic skincare moisturisers will reach the top layer of the skin called the horny layer. Cosmeceutical brands will reach the epidermis, but the only way to reach the deepest layer, the dermis (where skin cells are born), is by taking skincare supplements. Skincare supplements treat your skin from the inside out, they are actually better for your skin than topical creams. 1. It feeds skin over the entire body 2. Comes in an absorbable form 3. Feeds even the deeper layers of the skin, where skin cells are produced to help make the best changes for your skin The easiest way to compare this is if you were pregnant, you would look after your baby throughout the pregnancy, not just once it’s born. The same applies for your skin cells, you should look after them from the bottom layer not just the top layer. Advanced Nutrition Programme is one of the highest quality skincare vitamin supplement programmes on the market. Available at Bespoke you, speak to one of our team members for more information. Calisthenics in the Park petition Worthing resident, Amelia Santana has started a campaign to persuade Worthing Councils to build a Calisthenics park in Worthing. Amelia’s online petition, launched in May, already has 150 signatories, and she needs at least 1,000 signatures in order for the Council to consider the petition for discussion. She hopes that, as people become aware of the initiative, then more supporters will make the project a reality. Calisthenics is a form of exercise where the bodyweight is used as resistance; common exercises are lunges, squats, sit-ups and pull-ups, and it is achievable for anyone at any fitness level. Although Calisthenics mostly involves using a wall and the floor, certain exercises require ‘equipment,’ such as pull-up bars, gymnastic rings, a dips station and soft flooring. Amelia believes that this kind of equipment should be available for free in every community and that implementing a pilot would impact future Councils' decisions on what equipment to provide for parks and grounds. Scouts learn to bowl The WPBC Coaching Team recently hosted a successful evening introducing the 8th Worthing Sea Scouts to bowls. Twenty four scouts and two leaders were taught the basics of the game by the coaches, Eric Henshaw, Keith Merrett, Trevor Parker, George Rhodes, Gordon Kibbles and Richard Calvert, who found the scouts to be “very responsive … and showing, in some cases, genuine interest in our sport.” The evening ended in a match using the scoreboards after which the scouts thanked the coaches for their commitment and patience, and for making the evening so much fun. Home is where the Heart is Can you imagine how you would feel if it was suggested that you leave your home and loved one and move to an “old people’s home”… Panic, anger, fear, betrayal are some words that come to mind. When the time comes for residential specialist dementia care, it is ROOM AVAILABLE NOW! when the quality of life for both sufferer and carer can be improved. Woodlands offers twenty-four hour professional care with the majority of staff having the equivalent of NVQ 3 and 4 with continuous updated courses provided. Families are able to take their loved one out or enjoy home made tea and cake in a relaxed atmosphere within the home daily or when ever is possible for them. This allows for quality social time, and families know that the personal, nutritional and complex care needs of their loved ones are being provided for every hour of the day. There is however one fact that is not frequently admitted. This is… that the earlier this move takes place, the better the result for the resident as they are able to cope with the changes to their lifestyle. No-one wants to make this sad decision, and in reality the temptation is to wait and “see how it goes”. Unfortunately, what so often happens is a catastrophe! A fall, midnight walk, not to mention all the little things that can play havoc with Dementia - lack of nutrition, hydration, cleanliness leading to infections and indeed the appearance that the actual Dementia is worse than it is! Why would we want minimum care at home, instead of the continuously caring atmosphere where a sufferer of Dementia is protected from all of the fear, indignity and complete isolation they experience most of the time. Come and visit Woodlands and see the difference professional family care could make for your loved one. We have a saying at Woodlands, “Enable a person to be the best they can be!” For further information and to visit Woodlands House contact me Oonagh Cacioppo Manager/ Proprietor: house.woodlands@gmail.com 01903725458 or 07815762623

The onus is now on retirees to decide what to do with their pension savings... By Ivan Lyons Director Investment Solutions, Worthing While you may not be planning to blow your savings on a sports car or an expensive cruise habit, it is easy to make costly mistakes even when you have the best intentions. 1.

Cash is not king

Some people are taking cash out of their pension, not to spend in retirement, but to put in to a Bank Account. Whilst some do have a lack of trust in pensions and see getting money out as a good thing, it may not make any financial sense. Example ‘ Carol regards cash as a safe investment’ So following the Pension Freedoms in April 2015, she withdrew £10,000 - not to spend but to deposit in an Instant Access Account to have on hand for emergencies. However, only the first 25% was paid tax-free and after basic rate tax was deducted from the remainder, she only had £8,500 to pay into her account. With the top-paying Instant Access Account paying less than 1.5%, it would take a serious amount of time to recoup the money lost to tax. Throwing inflation into account and Carol may lose more money in real terms. While it is invested within your pension, your money is protected from income tax and, when you die, it will be outside of your estate for Inheritance Tax purposes. At Investment Solutions, we would suggest that if individuals prefer to hold some cash, you could consider switching part of your pension fund into cash but still keep it in the pension wrapper so it keeps its tax-free status. 2.

Withdrawing To Invest

There may be the temptation to cash-in your pension and re-invest the money in shares. This does not make sense for two important reasons. Firstly, 75% of the withdrawal will be taxed at your highest rate of income tax and second, you lose protection from Income Tax, Capital Gains Tax and Inheritance Tax. Example ‘Investing Ian’ Ian wants to buy a portfolio of shares, so he cashes-in his pension to do this. Over the years the value of these shares grows and he is now looking to sell.

As his gains exceed the Capital Gains Tax Allowance he has another tax bill to pay (after paying income tax when he cashed his pension-in). He was not aware that if he had kept his money in his pension, and reviewed where his money was invested, his money would have continued to grow tax-free and remain sheltered from IHT. At Investment Solutions, we would advise that if individuals want to invest in different shares and investment funds to those offered by their current pension provider, then to consider switching to another provider, which offers the choice. An eager investor, for example, could switch into a Self-Invested Personal Pension (SIPP) that offers access to shares in addition to the full universe of investment funds. Whizz-Kidz Helping disabled youngsters find confidence and independence For 26 years national charity, Whizz-Kidz has been transforming the lives of disabled children in the UK by providing the vital equipment, support and life skills they need to reach their full potential, and offers a range of services in West Sussex. Back in 1989, Whizz-Kidz founder, Mike Dickson, was in his bike shop when he saw a girl in a wheelchair looking up at a bike light on a higher shelf. When Mike asked if he could help, the girl politely replied, ‘No thanks, I can reach it myself,’ pushed a button her powered wheelchair and rose up to take the light off the shelf herself. It was at that moment that Mike realized the difference that the right wheelchair could make to a child’s life. That small action of picking something off a high shelf meant something a lot bigger – it meant independence. Mike ran the London Marathon that year and, remembering the moment in the bike shop, pledged to raise the money to buy a powered wheelchair for a child who needed it – he raised £9,000 for a girl with cerebral palsy and the following year he founded Whizz-Kidz.

The charity provides a range of mobility equipment for children and young people with physical disabilities – including manual and powered wheelchairs, buggies and trikes, and in some cases they may also be able to offer sports wheelchairs – allowing them to be independent in all areas of their lives. The charity works with young people from roughly two to twenty five years of age, supporting young people at different stages throughout their journey into adulthood. However, Whizz-Kidz mission statement is for all disabled children’s lives to be full of fun, friendship and freedom, and for them the wheelchair is just the start of achieving this aim. The charity also runs clubs and camps, provides wheelchair skills training and work placements to help young people develop confidence and independence, and offers services to help disabled young people, their parents or carers Whizz-Kidz services in West Sussex centre upon the charity’s Ambassador Youth Club in Worthing. Ambassador Clubs give young disabled people a place to meet, make friends and have fun, and they provide a range of activities including, music, dance, art, sports, beauty therapy, cooking and trips out. They also run campaigns to help improve the lives of young disabled people by raising awareness of disability issues and campaigning for better facilities. Other services that run throughout the county include Wheelchair Skills Courses, Work Placements that are tailored to each young person’s needs and also Residential Camps that come to the South East once a year, providing young people with a two night stay independent of their parent or carer – Camp Whizz-Kidz is designed for wheelchair users aged from twelve to twenty five. The Wheelchair Skills Courses work in partnership with local primary, secondary and special schools teaching users how to get the most from their wheelchairs. There are three levels of training provided – beginners, intermediate and advanced – and children can learn how to tackle kerbs, perfect their reversing skills or learn how to safely carry items in their chair. Training events support wheelchair users aged from two to twenty five and are delivered by experienced trainers, many of whom use wheelchairs themselves.

For an older age group, Work Placements allow disabled young people, aged from fourteen to twenty five years old, to gain invaluable experience of the workplace, learn more about a career, acquire useful contacts and improve their employability. The service offers a range of opportunities and works in one of two ways – either a company will offer a placement and the charity finds a candidate to fill it, or else a candidate will contact them and ask for a specific placement which the charity then do their best to find. The charity also organises Work Skills Days, offering youngsters a valuable chance to meet employers and friends and to learn about and consider future career paths in a social environment. During the day participants undertake interactive workshops, working as a team and individually, and learning about CV building, career planning and disability rights, resulting in a boost of confidence, experience in the work place and the opportunity to work with Whizz-Kidz in the future with a Work Placement. In addition to the charity’s core programme of services, young people can also sign up to the Young Leaderz programme that develops vital leadership, decision-making and teamwork skills, encouraging the development of new mind-sets and attributes by completing modules such as ‘Becoming a Role Model’.

Whizz-Kidz is always looking to grow the services it provides and so reach more young people and families that need the charity’s support. The Ambassador Club, along with all of the Young People’s Services offered, welcomes new young people. So, how do families take up the services offered by Whizz-Kidz? Whizz-Kidz works in collaboration with the NHS and with respect to the provision of mobility equipment, the charity’s guidelines state that: “The NHS should always be a family’s first port of call for mobility equipment. However, if your local NHS Wheelchair Service does not provide equipment to meet the essential mobility needs of your child then we may able to help.” It may be that children are un-

Too much information By Richard Cohen JP FPFS ACII MCSI Chartered Financial Planner The long term higher return you usually get from investments is the reward you get for putting up with a rougher ride. With that in mind is it sensible to worry about every daily movement? Is there any downside to checking regularly? Possibly… The problem is that in the short term markets are unpredictable. Whilst the FTSE 100 is not everything when it comes to investing and hopefully an investor will have a diversified portfolio made up of different asset classes from all over the world, it does provide us with 32 years’ worth of market data. With that in mind let’s look at three investors who all invested £10,000 in a FTSE 100 tracker when the index was created in 1984. The first likes to know exactly what they are worth each day and logs on to their account each morning to see the value of their fund, pre internet they checked the FTSE 100 on teletext. Our second investor phones up their adviser at the start of each month to check how things are doing and our final investor wait for their annual review with their adviser. Since 1984 the FTSE 100 has risen around five fold,

so all three investors will now have around £60,000. Whilst they will have paid charges to be invested they will have received far more in dividends and if they had reinvested those dividends they would have benefited from compounding. However, to keep things simple I’m using a no dividend, no charge scenario. Despite the massive capital return the FTSE 100 has provided, since its inception it has only risen on 51% of trading days. Our first investor is going to be disappointed around half the time he checks in. The FTSE 100 has risen 59% of calendar months, so on average each year seven of the monthly calls will have been positive. Finally, the FTSE has risen in 72% of calendar years therefore the final investor will only have been disappointed nine times over the 32 years. In my experience the last two investors are happier and have a more positive outlook on investing. I’m not suggesting investors should bury their heads in the sand but it’s important to remember the long term reasons you invested and remember the bigger picture. Deadhead perennial flowers as they will often create a new flush of buds as you inhibit the energy of the plant going into seed production. Plus the first flush of Hybrid and Patio roses may have finished so deadhead them back to a couple of new, outward facing buds.

It is safe to bring any tender plants out from your conservatory now.

Make sure any ponds don’t get swamped with blanket weed.

Any shrubs that flowered in June can be cut back eg Wigelia and Philadelphius.

Any new plants that went in this year will dry out much faster than established plants as their roots are not as plugged into the surrounding soil.

ing as an adult beetle ready to lay more eggs during the summer months. These pests can cause considerable damage and weaken timber to the point of collapse. This activity goes on unseen until the grub emerges from the timber leaving the characteristic flight hole, and a small pile of yellow dust (Frass).

Common harmless insects include Booklice, woodlice, carpet beetle, bedbugs and silverfish. Probably the most common of these is the woodlouse which is found in dark damp and humid conditions. Bedlice can be a source of intense personal irritation and warrant specialist intervention and pesticides. The silverfish will be found in your bathroom lurking in warm damp corners.

Treatment of woodworm involves the low pressure spaying of timbers with insecticide. The treatment can be intrusive since all timbers should be brushed down, any roof insulation removed, and the undersides of floor boards lifted to facilitate spraying.

Most house-holders are more concerned with woodworm, this generic name is given to a number of specific bugs that might attack your home, largely unseen. They spend most of their lives burrowing though both soft and hardwood timber. The beetles share a similar lifestyle in so far as they start life an egg laid in cracks and crevices in timber. The Findon Highwayman Came Riding (and His Ghost Too) By Valerie Martin pennyless, the young gentlemen with much credit, pursued their journey and arrived safe in Sussex".

Here is an extract from the long defunct Sussex Weekly Advertiser, the first weekly newspaper ever published in Sussex. It is a report about schoolboys on their way home‌ "2nd April 1798... On Tuesday last about four o'clock in the afternoon, the following daring robbery was committed: As Messrs. Shergold, Quantock, Comber and Campion were travelling in a post chaise from Eton School, to spend the Easter vacation with their friends, they were stopped by a single highwayman, who, with a white handkerchief hanging down his face, and a presented pistol, robbed them of their cash; but, not in the least disconcerted at being left

Yes, there were Sussex highwaymen. There was even a Findon highwayman. Years ago the solitary and little known nearby property of Lychpole Farm (OS ref: TQ 1507 on the Sompting side of Cissbury Ring), in the middle of nowhere, formed part of the Manor of Lychpole. The name is indeed a strange one and comes from the Lychpole family who held the land in the 13th century. It could also be surmised that it is a corruption over the centuries of "lich-pole". This has a more sinister meaning, that of a gallowstree and place of execution. The date of this photograph is c. 1905 and depicts an agricultural worker of over a hundred years ago, standing near the door of the Well House and Washroom at Lychpole Farm. I understand that this is where the dirty milk churns were washed out. Travel during the first half of the 19th century was a perilous task in Findon. It is true that travelling on the armed Mail Coaches or scheduled stagecoaches with a guard had greatly improved safety, but a journey by carriage, chaise or unarmed stage was still a dangerous business. Highwaymen plied their trade along lonely stretches of the road and it was said it was advised to write a Will before setting out on a journey. The ghost of Lychpole Manor was that of a highwayman who worked the downland tracks on that side of the Findon boundary. In the 18th century, our local highwayman targeted the lumbering long distance carriages on the old coach road from Lancing up to Steyning as they provided relatively easy pickings. These carried the more affluent travellers who were more likely to be carrying larger sums of coin in their hide money-pouches. The tracks were dangerous places and in the end the local inhabitants feared using the highway. Our highwayman was eventually caught and taken prisoner, tried and convicted. His execution place was fixed to be on the ancient downland coach road where his crimes had been committed. A grave was, therefore, dug in preparation across the centre of the track.

42 Local History As he was taken to the gallows the highwayman pledged revenge..."to not sleep in his grave". He roared his vow loud and clear that he would never rest and carriages and wagons would bump, jolt and jerk for ever more over his remains. The highwayman was duly hanged on the verge of the coach road and buried in the prepared grave. The following morning the first passers-by received a shock. They discovered that the highwayman's body had risen from the soil and his head had sprouted forth in the centre of the highway, mouth agape. It was indeed a macabre experience for those discovering it. Assistance was called and the convicted man was hastily re-buried. The result was the same and the following day his head had reappeared in the roadway like a grotesque puppet on strings. This happened many times. At this point sceptics may be thinking that this was bad workmanship on the part of the workmen digging a shallow grave — followed by the handiwork of wild foraging animals (foxes?). However, this is how the macabre legend of the spirit of Lychpole Manor came into existence — the apparition of the highwayman was to be seen mounted on a phantom horse and forever haunted the downland highway. Strange tales relating to the story came to the ears of local people. A coach driver who frequented the lonely stretch was held up by a robber and on the spur of the moment decided not to halt when he heard the all too familiar words, "Stand and deliver". Instead of stopping, he cracked the whip and charged to "run the fellow down". The horses set off at a gallop. The leaders shied off to the nearside. The occupants of the coach were thrown about. It was said that the highwayman’s ghost rose up from the ground in the path of the coach. The speeding vehicle passed straight through what appeared to be the apparition of the executed highwayman. The unearthly vision vanished. The coachman was extremely shaken on that day to say the least. Wayfarers and many agricultural workers used with dread the haunted road on their way home at dusk after a long day’s work. They stoutly declared that

SUSSEX LOCAL their wagons collided with a strange soft object lying lengthways in the track. When they had alighted to investigate the obstacle there was nothing in sight. And so the stories abounded. If a future survey of twenty-first century motorists between Lancing and Steyning were undertaken, it would be interesting to note if any drivers still experienced a phantom "hump" in the road. The strange tales of the appearance of the ghost of Lychpole Manor lingered for over a century. Then they grew less frequent and gradually subsided. It was, I deduce a smuggler-inspired deterrent to keep local folk indoors when they were moving their contraband. Scoundrelly smugglers of the night would go to great lengths to frighten local people from being on the roadways after nightfall when they were working their illegal goods up the highway to Steyning, or across country to Findon. No one has seen or heard for many years the galloping hooves heralding the ghostly figure of the highwayman on his spectral horse below Cissbury Ring — but I cannot guarantee that he will not appear if anyone has a mind to take a night time walk....... any volunteers? Further stories under the heading of "Ghosts and eerie Sightings" can be seen on Valerie Martin's website www.findonvillage.com
