10 years in publishing!
Happy Birthday to us! This month our magazine is ten years old. We started with just one magazine covering Storrington and West Chiltington - originally called ‘Key Local’ - and now have six separate editions. I recall visiting the businesses in Storrington with some trepidation, to seek advertising. Happily at my first stop I met James Williams owner of MJ Cars who booked (and paid for) a full year of advertising for his and also his mother’s business. We still work with several businesses who took space in our first ever issue and are grateful to everyone who took a chance on me and a new magazine. As is customary at these times, I would like to thank all the wonderful local people we have worked with. Our superb distributors, some of whom have been with us for over 8 years; the brilliant team at Evonprint Printers (which very sadly went into administration recently) who helped us get started and never missed a deadline; our knowledgeable editorial contributors and not forgetting Sheila Mills, my mum, who has helped in so many ways and has also supplied many of our wonderful cover images over the years. Many thanks to you too for reading and supporting our advertisers who of course make the whole venture possible. To celebrate our anniversary we have five competitions this month! We have also made a short video which you can view on our website.

It was bought by Mosaic Global Investments Ltd in December 2015 with those behind the firm promising to deliver a “world-class development’ with both residential and business use. After the firm delayed a proposed consultation with the local community, Worthing Borough Council says it is doing all it can to work with the developer to ensure firm plans are brought forward. SUSSEX LOCAL Car Parks Going Green
A bright idea will lead to big savings in energy and money at two car parks in Worthing. Energyefficient LED lights will be installed at the multi-storeys in Buckingham Road and High Street, replacing existing lighting and saving Worthing Borough Council nearly £50,000 a year in power and maintenance costs. The long-lasting LED lights will be retrofitted throughout the car parks, including the stairwells, and sensors will control lighting levels, using energy even more efficiently and triggering brighter lighting when and where it’s needed. The savings made will pay for the £172,000 installation costs in less than four years, providing financial benefits into the future as well as: helping to reduce the council’s carbon footprint, providing better lighting for car park users, reducing the risk of accidents and creating less light nuisance. The investment in LED lighting is an example of Adur& Worthing Councils’ drive to be more energy efficient, a commitment outlined in their three-year strategy – Platforms for our Places. I could tell you all about Woodlands House and its facilities as if I was describing a hotel, for example the beautiful individual rooms, the designer bathrooms, wi-fi, HD TV, telephones, spacious gardens, etc etc etc. all of which Woodlands has! However when I was searching for a room for my own mother all those years ago I do ROOM AVAILABLE NOW! not remember any of these concerns being uppermost in my mind. What I do remember is the fear of making the wrong decision, whether I was "doing the right thing” remembering "don't ever put me in an old peoples home" but knowing in my heart and head that this was the very best decision I could make. What was so heartbreaking was the role reversal of taking and accepting the responsibility of making such a life changing choice on behalf of a loved one, and it was the hardest decision I had ever had to make. Finding the type of care available within the many different homes is daunting in itself. Do I want a new large modern home with all the "facilities" bright walls, all new staff or do I want the home that offers the nearest possible likeness to a home? With familiar staff, many who have been at the same home for years and years with the maximum experience and ongoing training within that same home with a manager who is in daily contact with all residents and staff? Do I want to see every certificate for every course and pictures of members of staff because there are so many, or do I want to be greeted by the same team week in week out? These same staff knowing my loved one not only during the day but also at night when they are alone and feeling lost? Knowing - without referring to records - that it's Horlicks and not chocolate that she will appreciate at 2am? Can’t afford to Divorce?
By Karen Fleming Consultant Solicitor at Bennett Griffin, Worthing Many people are nervous about the cost involved in obtaining a divorce so don’t go to a solicitor. This can result in two unpleasant options: 1: Staying in an unhappy marriage, which despite views to the contrary, can actually adversely affect the children, due to the tension and atmosphere between the parties. 2: Doing a ‘do it yourself divorce’ and accepting a financial settlement, without advice, which may be far, far, less than the recipient is really entitled to. Of course there are times when a straight forward divorce, say very short marriage, no children and no assets could indicate that there is little need to pay solicitors. However, even here, do remember my words of caution, in my previous article, regarding the importance of a consent order. It is good practice to seek at least an initial piece of advice. Many people seek a free half hour. Well if you can obtain it, that is great, but it is becoming harder and harder to do so. It is worth say £200, to have an informed chat and have some knowledge about what to do, how to do it, and what you are entitled to? If having had some initial advice you decide to do it yourself, or not, at least you are better informed.
Remember a 50/50 split of the assets is a starting point not a definite. If all cases simply split 50/50 we lawyers and the court process would not be necessary. Often the party in the more modest financial position, after a split, can feel he or she has little choice but to agree to a financial settlement which is clearly inadequate. There are however litigation loans, for legal fees, which could apply to you and help you obtain the best outcome for yourself and your children. Such a loan can put you on an equal footing with the party who has the income to pay legal fees. Ask yourself, is it worth having a litigation loan of say £10,000, to get back £400,000 rather than the £250,000 being offered? Don’t accept an amount that leaves you vulnerable. Come and see myself or one of my colleagues to see if a litigation loan applies to you and can help you have a better future. 26 Charity Profile
Enable Me... ...Enabling disabled people, by raising awareness Chris Jay is a man with a mission. The CEO and Chairman of West Sussex based charity Enable Me, wants to make his organisation more visible – to raise its profile amongst the schools and businesses of West Sussex, and beyond.
Chris Jay CEO and Chairman
Enable Me is a small user-led charity providing disability awareness days in schools – allowing children of all ages to learn about the needs, challenges and unique life experience of disabled people, from disabled people. The charity also provides specialised disability awareness training for sports coaches, teaching professionals and businesses; exploring language, legislation, communication and how to make the work environment more inclusive. This year Enable Me will be expanding its portfolio of services by delivering new work in the form of Disability Access Audits and Autism Awareness workshops. Originally established in 2004 by Helen Sage, a secondary school teacher inspired by her disabled son, David, to run workshops in order to dispel
negative myths and attitudes faced by disabled children, young people and adults. Over the intervening years Enable Me has provided disability awareness training to over 50,000 school children, teachers and professionals working with disabled children, young people and adults and has been through many changes. Born with cerebral palsy, Chris Jay joined Enable Me in 2008 as a volunteer. He was working on a part-time Masters degree, when a friend called up and suggested he might like to join him volunteering at a small charity promoting disabled awareness. From volunteer, Chris became Deputy Project Manager, supporting the then Chief Executive, before becoming Enable Me’s Chairman and CEO himself. Chris describes himself as being: “Delighted and thrilled to be in charge of an organisation whose work is so close to my own heart.” With a degree in Politics and a Masters in Global Security, and as a wheelchair user for over twenty years, Chris is able to deliver Enable Me’s training from first hand experience.

27
28 Charity Profile Unsurprisingly, one of the factors driving changes to the services offered by Enable Me is fluctuating levels of funding. A few years ago, after a significant funding stream dried up, Chris was led to make a tough decision: to take the charity out of the business of running clubs for disabled children and concentrate instead on delivering disability awareness training to schools and businesses. Although the charity covers an area of a sixty-mile radius, providing services across West Sussex, Hampshire and Surrey, Chris is keen to make the charity better known, to increase its visibility outside of the local area and to reach even more schools and businesses across West Sussex. However, he is full of praise and gratitude for the local community. The people of Littlehampton, where the charity is based, have in Chris’s words “been amazing, they have helped raise tens of thousands of pounds (over the years that Chris has been involved with the charity) … and support us every time we do an event.” Chris illustrates just how lucky Enable Me has been in finding support from the local community when he tells me that the charity recently received donations totalling around £10,000 from the local community; funding, from various donors – including the Co-op’s local funds, from Littlehampton’s Bonfire Society, a Golf Day hosted by Littlehampton Golf club and a £5,000 from a donor who wishes to be anonymous. A pool of funding that will allow Enable Me to offer awareness training to Sussex schools, that would ordinarily pay a fee to receive, free of charge. Chris reckons that the average cost of taking Enable Me into a school is £500 – so the charity currently has capacity to offer free training to around twenty schools. Chris says that ideally he would like to have a waiting list of schools eager to host Enable Me’s awareness training, and says he would love to hear from any schools interested in organising disability awareness training in their school. However, one of the challenges that the charity faces is that of being known and gaining access to schools in order to present their training. As well as the expected difficulty of getting past “the gatekeeper”expected as a result of heightened security in and around our schools - a number of other factors, not least being the lack of money available to state schools, and the compression of the curriculum, make getting access to schools, in Chris’s words: “Bloody awkward.” This is the first prong of Chris’s drive to make the
SUSSEX LOCAL Building awareness with local schoolchildren
charity more visible. Whilst wanting to make schools aware of the charity and what it does, he realises just how difficult it is for schools to fund external training in these cash strapped days, and he is keen for schools to know that even if the funds run out then Enable Me can go to its supporters and say, “we have a school that wants our training and needs funding.” Chris’s ideal is to make Enable Me practically selfsufficient, which is where the second prong of making the charity more visible come in. Taking awareness training into businesses is an area that Chris “would like to make a big push for.” He stresses that Enable Me is “not looking for handouts from businesses” but that the charity wants to work with them, providing an

The charity also requires able-bodied volunteers – who can drive and are able to help co-ordinate volunteers on the training day.

Secret Millionaire By Richard Cohen FPFS ACII MCSI Chartered Financial Planner As a nation, we have a reputation for being very repressed when it comes to talking about money. If most people suddenly became a millionaire, they would probably keep it secret from all except their nearest and dearest. Over recent months I’ve come across a phenomenon of people keeping it secret from themselves. This isn’t because they’ve won the Lotto but not checked the ticket it’s that they’ve ignored old pensions. Most people don’t have a clue what “deferred” pension they’re entitled to from previous employers and even fewer people know what transfer value they’d be offered to surrender that pension. The mechanism for revaluing a deferred pension can mean that pensions from the 1980s and 1990s where you had a reasonable period of service can sometimes be worth more than the salary you were on when you left that employer. Even deferred pen-
sions from employers you left since 2000 can be worth more than you’d expect. Whilst the income stream may be higher than expected it’s the sum pension schemes are willing to pay in exchange for giving that income up that can be life changing. I recently had a case where a pension that a client initially described as “probably worth nothing” was in fact worth £26,000 per year and the scheme were willing to pay £1.1 million as a transfer value. When we first met, he was convinced he was going to have to work into his seventies because he hadn’t made provision for his interest only mortgage and felt bad how he couldn’t help his daughter with university expenses. Three months later he was a millionaire and able to retire immediately. Not all forgotten pensions will be as large, not all schemes offer such a large multiple of pension to transfer value and for many people a guaranteed income for life suits them better than a large lump sum. However, not having a pension transfer qualified independent financial adviser to check your pensions for you is like buying a lottery ticket and not checking the numbers. “Why Not Have A Fresh Look Kitchen Makeover?”
Do I have to re-tile, do my flooring or change my worktops and appliances?
Having a new kitchen installed is often a big hassle that takes weeks to achieve. It is often costly, and you sometimes have to make sacrifices or cutbacks because the budget you have does not stretch to what you want. With a kitchen makeover, you will still achieve the main objective... a fresher, brighter, more contemporary kitchen but at under half the cost of a new kitchen. We can simply change the face of your kitchen by changing the doors, worktops and accessories.
No, not at all, if these items are fine then why replace them, it possible to just change your worktops only as no job is too small for us.
How does a makeover work? As kitchen cupboards are often in great condition, we can fit made to measure doors manufactured and built here in the UK. We can also reface your units, or panel them so they match the colour of the door you have chosen. We can also replace the kick boards, lighting pelmet and cornice to the same colour too and because our kitchens are fitted by British craftsmen.
My doors are an unusual size, I can’t find replacements in any shop! Our doors are made to measure and the hinge positions are drilled on site meaning an exact fit for your cupboards.
Do you have a showroom? No. This is so we can keep the costs down. Companies with showrooms are often 15-20% more expensive. We will, however, bring a showroom to you as we have samples of doors, worktops, handles and hinges. For your free no obligation quotation, please David or Tony at Fresh Look Kitchen Makeovers on 01903 443333 or emaiLinfo@freshlookkitchenmakeovers.co.uk

In Your Garden Monthly gardening ideas and tasks by Andrew Staib of Glorious Gardens Space Creating Tricks The creative use of curves can make your garden seem to go on and on past the fence lines. Mirrors can reflect the light from one side to another especially if the area is very dark (make sure they are not very big and in the open as birds will fly into them). A small lawn can be made into a receding trapeze shape to give the effect of a greater sense of distance. Rhythmic planting can draw the eye to the repetition rather than straight to the end of the bed.
Garden Design Ideas for the Small Garden When designing your small garden I recommend buying very large and bold pots for a small courtyard garden. Small pots look like you are trying to squeeze as much as you can into the space where one big pot gives the space a sense of power and gravitas. The bigger the better sometime as the pots, seating or raised beds exude a sense of generosity of spirit.
Parts of the garden can be hidden from the frontal view so one has to go on a little walk to see what is around the corner. This can be done in the smallest of gardens. Painting the back walls and fences a dark grey, black or dark green can make the back of the garden recede to a greater depth than it actually is. Growing a mix of evergreen and deciduous climbers can also have this effect and give the visitor a sense of interest with splashes of colour taking their attention away from the limits of the garden.
As with trees- it is much more effective to buy one really wonderful big specimen than three little shrubs. With paving materials because you don’t have much area to pave you can go for an expensive basalt or porcelain tile which will offer you endless pleasure. Also, investing in a really original sculpture can give your space a sense of creativity and purpose. The Elements You can bring the elements into a small garden- in fact in designing your garden this is imperative as most smaller gardens are quite hemmed in and often don’t have other neighbouring greenery to enrich the outer perimeter. A fire bowl can be stored under the stairs or in your shed and brought out when a few friends pop over. Once you sip a G and T and the fire is roaring under the stars you will forget where you are and your little space will feel timeless! A water feature will give you the sound of water which is generally calming for the nerves and gives an echo of larger bodies of water that you have visited in the past. Birds will frequent you feature or pond and the sky will fill the reflections. Movement- Ornamental grasses, dwarf willow trees or pendulous trees like Betula pendulosa will sway in the wind and bring an element of wildness and unpredictability.

through the door Layers Most small garden designs shy away from trees and large shrubs as the fear is that the garden will look over crowded. However the exact opposite can be true. A line of obedient, shaped little shrubs can make the garden feel restricted and limited. When designing a small back garden I will often concentrate on establishing a larger tree is a natural corner of the garden. Even if the garden is less than 10 meters long an apple tree with maximum height of 4 meters can give the garden a sense of age and majesty, and bring in the feeling of a complex ecosystem than reminds us of the countryside. Under the larger tree one can plant a small swath of ornamental grasses, mid size shrubs or bulbs that can evoke a larger landscape. Multi functional If you can make your garden for you with multiply functions it will be a much more enticing place to be. Herbs can be grown from hanging baskets, tomatoes up the sunny shed wall, climbing roses can be piled

up over sheds and up conifers, and fruit can be grown as espaliers along the edges of paths. Good luck if you decide to re think your small space. And if you have a bigger garden you can create a network of smaller gardens within it to give it the feeling of a never ending exploration.

How to get a Divorce– Reduce Time, Cost and Stress? By Ivan Lyons, MD Investment Solutions, Worthing As an Alternative to the Courts at Investment Solutions we can help via the Collaborative Law process. This offers an alternative to the traditional adversarial court system. When a relationship breaks down it is often a time of stress and transition. Going to court can be an added worry and the Collaborative Law process enables separating couples to agree a resolution around the table with their Solicitors that is legally binding. How does it work? Collaborative Law is a legal process which both parties need to agree to enter into. Once solicitors are appointed both parties sign a contract committing to the process. Meetings are held on neutral ground and an agenda is set. Everyone in attendance at the meeting will work as a team to help achieve the right outcome.
Where to find help? The Worthing POD is a group of local, trained Collaborative Solicitors and associated professionals, based in Worthing that has been established to help promote and give advice to people seeking an alternative to the court system. An enquiry can be made without charge via the website www.worthingfamilylaw.com and one of the team will come back to you. Further afield, national organisations such as Resolution (www.resolution.org.uk) have over 6,500- Family Lawyers and other professionals listed. Need advice? At Investment Solutions, we are an Award-winning Chartered Firm of Independent Financial Advisors. Contact 01903 214640 or see www.investmentsolutions.co.uk. The information in this Article does not constitute advice. Please remember that past performance is not necessarily a guide to future returns. The value of units and the income from them may fall as well as rise. Investors may not get back the amount originally invested.
The emphasis is on transparency and cooperation, prioritising the key issues, focussing on what’s important, helping to formulate a practical plan that will help the family move on in the best way possible. Everyone commits in writing not to go to court, so both parties and their solicitors have a strong incentive to reach a resolution, even if things get difficult. Financial experts and family consultants can also be invited to join to help manage the emotional and financial side of the separation. Is it for everyone? Divorce is often an extremely emotional and stressful time and the idea of sitting around a table with your spouse to try to resolve matters amicably will often not be possible or desirable. However it should be considered. Arbitration and Family Mediation are also options instead of the court system. What does it cost? It is difficult to provide an average cost, as costs are bespoke and very much depend on the circumstances of the individual case and the issues involved. Typically a Collaborative Law case is less expensive than going through the court system, however cost should not be the key determinant. One needs to consider the greater emotional aspect of going to court.

Wood Boring Insects By Chris Ennis FRICS Wood worm is the generic name for a wood boring insect infestation. There are many types of insect, and most can be readily controlled using chemical sprays. The Common Furniture Beetle is probably present to some extent in about 80% of pre-war houses in the South of England. The beetle attacks sound softwood timber and is encouraged by the presence of some damp conditions nearby. The evidence of beetle attack is the appearance of small ‘flight’ holes of up to 1.5mm in diameter beneath which there may be a small quantity of bright yellow dust known as “frass”. The holes so frequently seen are in fact the exit holes for the beetle. It’s life style is such that it can exist in timber for several years before emerging as a an adult fly ready to lay eggs. The adult beetle will lay eggs on a rough timber surface, and these develop into grubs. It is those grubs that will chew their way through timber before emerging as adult flies some time later. In serious wood worm attacks timber can be structurally weakened, but in most cases this is not the case. There are many types of wood boring insects, amongst them being the Death Watch Beetle, often found in old hardwood timber in period properties. A

typical Death Watch beetle flight hole may be 2/3mm in width. Wood boring Weevils tend to attack end grain timber close to damp masonry, and they are frequently found in the ends of timber floor joists and in floor structures near damp walls. Bark Beetles attack only the outer sapwood timber, and will not require remedial treatments. There are many other forms of woodborers, amongst them being the Powder Post Beetle, and the House Longhorn Beetle. There are many specialist companies dealing with the eradication of all types of woodworm, and all should belong to a reputable trade body and offer a 25 year insurance backed guarantee covering their work. Treatment is usually straight forward and involves spraying joinery with an insecticide that kills the grubs while they are still in the timber. Many householders have a morbid fear of wood worm attack…. Don’t worry it really isn’t unusual or dangerous to find worm hole in your loft space! Past Pictures by Valerie Martin
I wonder if the above depicts the Excelsior Cycling Club from Worthing? My bet is that it does. The date is 11th July 1906. The band of cyclists are ready to start for home passing down the Bostal and pedalling through Findon. They have just been out for a "Strawberry Feast" at the Frankland Arms in Washington. How on earth did the girls manage to cycle along wearing those dresses?
19 years later the above shows the Frankland Arms again . Spot the Jack Russell? In 1949 crowds came to see the re-opening of the Worthing Pier after hostilities. Worthing Pier was out of bounds during the Second World War when we lived in fear of invasion by the Germans.
Another clearing-up operation and again in 1949 when the Worthing Corporation introduced new equipment to assist with the dreaded weed thrown up by the waves..... the seaweed. They estimated to have shifted 30,000 cubic yards of seaweed in four days. Mr G H Kempton, Deputy Borough Engineer commented at the time that they had commenced work on the Thursday and by Monday the three dumper carts which carried about 4 cubic yards each, four bulldozers and a crane had cleared the beach up to the high water mark. He said ... "All the weed is now on the lower reaches of the beach and only the weather can help us. When the wind gets round to the east it will go. If, however, it has not gone by the end of the week then the position will be reviewed". Mr. Kempton considered that 1949 was one of the worst years for seaweed and estimated that more had been washed up on the Worthing shore than the previous year. Thickest deposits of seaweed and the worst stench was opposite Seldon Road. Here loads were taken out to the low water mark and dumped. The wind did freakishly veer round to the east for a short while and a quantity of smelly deposit was taken way out to sea. But suddenly the cheeky wind switched once again to a westwardly direction.
Were you there at the re-opening? I see that the boys got in the front of the photograph as usual. A few facts and figures for you to think about. Here are some of the materials used in the above right clean-up of the pier: 225 tons of iron and steel. 125 tons of wood. 12,000 square feet of glass. 30,000 ft. of wood decking. 1,500 gallons of paint. 34,000 bolts, nuts and rivets. Over a mile of handrailing. 3 miles of wire.
Meanwhile, amid this activity, children still cheerfully played on the shore but sand castles were not in vogue, it was making "seaweed castles". But few of the youngsters were inspired to do any swimming. 47 years later, I was living in this area and it was estimated in 1996 that if the beastly seaweed washed up on the shore that year had to be carted away by road, it would have filled 60,000 lorries before the beach was clear. I can recall driving to Worthing and upon getting out of my car..... I promptly hopped back in again because of the pervading smell..... and headed off to do shopping elsewhere.
