Welcome... The results of our survey last November indicated that many Sussex Local readers are wildlife lovers. So, we are pleased to be able to include an interview with Dr Tony Whitbread, Chief Executive of the Sussex Wildlife Trust in this month’s issue. Read what Dr Whitbread has to say about the recent government proposals to sell off Britain’s woodlands and other wildlife related topics starting on page 17. By the way, many congratulations to Beverley Mallett who was the winner of £150 in our reader survey prize draw! Ten other lucky readers also won £25 each. March is one of my favourite months, the weather tends to brighten up and the first spring flowers make an appearance. Phocas has “Spring fever” and is keen to get you working hard out in the garden see page 26. We’ve also got the lowdown on this season’s trends from Gay our style guru, see page 24. Gay is also looking forward to styling our January Style Makeover winner Doreen Harbour from Ashington. Look out for Doreen who will be appearing ‘before’ and ‘after’ in next month’s magazine. There’s plenty of events in our area this month too so keep our What’s On guide to hand, see pages 4 - 7. Enjoy March, Kristina Words of Wit “Two wrongs don’t make a right, but they make a good excuse.” PHYCHIATRIST THOMAS SZASZ

Findon History 9
THE MUSKETT GUNNE by Valerie Martin I firmly believe that the village of Findon migrated from its earlier position near the church, to its present site at an unknown date - most probably late mediaeval times. I think that a new settlement of a few houses very gradually grew up around the Square and one of these was the property on the site of the Gun Inn (right in picture taken c. 1955). It seems likely that Findon's situation on the important east-west route through the county would have made it less isolated than many other villages by the 1600s. Because of its downland situation, Findon's communications with neighbouring communities were relatively good. In bygone days (before improved road-making and drainage techniques) the chalk ridges of the Downs provided the driest routes and were the most logical choice for travelling by horse and coach in all seasons and weather. In the 1600s, Findon was a district through which many paupers, travellers and gentlemen of the road (tramps) passed. There was perhaps a population of nearly 200 in the village by this time. It was a quintessentially agricultural community where the inhabitants grew crops such as barley, wheat, oats, peas, tares, hemp and grass. I think
that practically every household owned some sheep, so the district was rife with petty sheep stealing. These flocks ranged in number from a mere 3 belonging to poorer households, up to 160. Cattle provided the inhabitants with meat, milk and dairy products and hides, whilst also serving as draught animals on the land. The village appears to have been little affected by national events during this period. However, Thomas Leicester proprietor of the inn in the centre of Findon (described as the Muskett Gunne in those days), was suddenly notified that he needed a licence to operate. Up until 1617 the law had not required establishments such as the Muskett Gunne to be licensed. How the Muskett Gunne came to have its name is rather a mystery. I suspect that Thomas Leicester was in all probability a country gunsmith by trade and operated business at the inn as a sideline, possibly assisted by his wife and family. It was most likely during their tenure in the early 1600s that the Open Hall area at the inn was floored over providing substantial additional living accommodation for the occupants. Who enforced the licensing of the Muskett Gunne? An intriguing story now unfolds. Sir Giles Mompesson was a certain swarthy, short in stature 32-year-old enterprising legislator of the day whose name was to become inextricably linked with the history of Findon. Giles was a well-known and respected Member of Parliament. As well as being a courtier of the first Stuart King of England, James I, he was considerably well connected and related by marriage to King James' influential follower, the Duke of Buckingham. He was described as a "good fellow" by his contemporaries and this may have played a part in his career prospects and assisted his ascent in important government and society circles - at least, until his plans were thwarted. I would go so far as to describe this gentleman as a somewhat questionable and shady character and a philanderer.....in spite of his excellent connections at court. It was in 1616, when Giles voiced his idea of

Thereafter, inns were the countryside enforcing the dubious new law and required to obtain an "alehouse licence", to permit collecting the revenue often by crooked methods them to retail beers and ales at their premises. 14 Charity & Community Every day in the UK 6 young people are told that they have Cancer….. Currently, there are no age-appropriate treatment facilities for young people with cancer in the South East and with no government funding, we urgently need help to fund the first ever Teenage Cancer Trust Unit in the South East at The Royal Marsden hospital. Teenage Cancer Trust are inviting 150 businesses to take part in our GRAND Challenge. By raising just £1000 each by June 2011, collectively local businesses will raise enough money to build and furnish one of the patient’s bedrooms at the brand new Teenage Cancer Trust Unit. This bedroom will provide a homeaway-from-home environment to enable young people to feel ‘normal’ and provide a much needed distraction from their gruelling treatment.
• Boost your employee’s morale
Why should your business support The GRAND Challenge?
• Encourage
Be one of 150 businesses who, in addition to supporting young people, their family and friends cope with a cancer diagnosis, will take part in an exciting Challenge which will:
Take the Downs Link Challenge! This annual bike ride of up to 30 miles across the stunning scenery of the Sussex Downs is a great, family friendly event. This year the ride starts at Bramber Castle at 8am on Saturday 21st May. Cycling is a great form of exercise, and there are lots of health benefits associated with regular cycling. Your cardiovascular fitness will improve and this means you’ll lower your risk of heart attack and stroke. On average, 350 calories an hour are burned off during leisure cycling so it’s a good way to lose weight. Pedalling is low impact, so you can improve muscle tone without stressing your knee and ankle joints. The Downs Link Challenge has the advantage of being mainly off road, following the route along the old dismantled railway line between Bramber and Christ’s Hospital. The countryside is beautiful and the wildlife is plentiful. The Downs Link Challenge has raised over £30,000 so far for Chestnut Tree House, the only hospice for children in Sussex. Every penny is vital to this valuable service so, get on your bike and see us on 21st May 2011!
See www.downslinkchallenge.co.uk for full details, maps and entry forms
• Enhance your business’ reputation and social responsibility within your local community
• Encourage business from people who also support Teenage Cancer Trust
• Build better business and social relationships between your employees, customers and business contacts fundraising/team building activities which can be implemented as part of your event’s calendar

Green Energy... Green energy is moving towards being a mainstream energy source for your home. The cost of the equipment is coming down and the Government is in the process of introducing a number of schemes to encourage the take up of renewable technologies – including the Feed In Tariff (FIT) for solar photovoltaic and the Renewable Heat Incentive for other technologies such as solar thermal (hot water) and heat pumps. In the next couple of articles I will give an outline of the various technologies. A Solar photovoltaic system produces electricity…the Government has already implemented an installation incentive scheme for this. A system consists of a number of panels, preferably, but not necessarily south facing, normally mounted on a roof, or on the ground. The panels are connected to an inverter and a generation meter which measures the electricity generated. The panels are usually “National Grid” connected, so no storage batteries are required, although this is an option for remote “off Grid” locations. Installation is minimally disruptive and normally takes 2 days to complete.

The economic entry level installation is 5 panels, with each panel being 1 x 1.5 metres. For a south facing pitched roof; this will generate approximately 1000 units of electricity a year, saving half a tonne of CO2. The number of panels you can choose is based on cost and space considerations. Under the FIT scheme, the Government requires electricity suppliers to buy the electricity you generate, even when you use it yourself. This means that instead of paying the supplier about 11p for each unit that you use, they have to pay you 41.3p for the electricity you generate, with a bonus of 3p for each unit you don’t use yourself. The FIT scheme is intended to provide a return on investment of about 10-12%, it’s open to businesses as well as domestic premises, and is payable for 25 years, index linked. Landlords can also benefit from an additional income stream as the FIT is paid to the equipment owner. Now I am not an expert on these technical matters but I know a man who is. In the next month or two I will look at ground and air source heat pumps.
