Charity & Community Charity virtual garden tour Pulborough residents Karen and Steve Bicknall have been organising Sweepstakes for friends and family in aid of local children’s hospice, Chestnut Tree House for 16 years now, starting with Strictly Come Dancing and moving on to The Apprentice, World Cup and Euro Football, Celebrity Masterchef and most currently The Sewing Bee! Amid the lockdown, their annual charity event, their ‘Open Garden’ was unable to take place, meaning the pair had to find an alternative way to share their beautiful gardening whilst raising money for the hospice. Karen said their Open Garden is “one of those events where you ask all of your friends to make cakes, donate unwanted gifts, perhaps the odd bottle or two for tombola prizes, even grow a few plants to sell or to donate a few well-read books to share. Then of course you invite the said friends, family and neighbours to come round and buy it all back!” She continued, “it is all in aid of such a tremendously, worthy cause! Who doesn’t live in awe of those dedicated souls who support

families with life-limited children, surely everyone’s worst nightmare? And that is why Steve and I choose to support them”. Not wanting to sacrifice their annual event, Steve said “We can’t cancel. I can do a virtual’ tour!” Steve has always wanted to direct his own film so figured this would be a great place to start. If you would like to watch the virtual Open Garden, you can watch it here: https://youtu.be/ QcukL-gnvAw If you enjoy it, please visit the fundraising page and give a donation, suggested £5, which you can do via: www.justgiving.com/fundraising/ KazBickers

Chestnut House lottery If you would like to support your local children’s hospice, you can take part in the Chestnut Tree House Lottery and help provide the very best hospice care for children with lifeshortening conditions and their families, across Sussex and South East Hampshire. It costs just £1 a week to play and you'll be in with a chance of winning our top prize of £1,000 every single Friday. During the coronavirus crisis, Chestnut Tree House is doing all it can to carry on providing care for local children who desperately need their support, but they cannot provide these services without community help. That’s why the hospice is asking generous local people to consider joining the Lottery. The regular, weekly income our Lottery provides allows the hospice to plan ahead and budget effectively for the difficult times now and to come. By playing the Lottery could help so many families in the weeks and months ahead. And that’s not all. Everyone who plays the Lottery stands a chance of winning the top prize of £1,000 or one of the other 22 cash prizes every single week. Start playing the Lottery and making a real difference today for full details visit: www.chestnutlottery.org.uk.

Organising your day Getting some structure is beneficial says Heather Smith It feels like life could start to return to some kind of normal, but still, with a lack of things to do, it is very easy to spend the morning drinking coffee, maybe go for a walk, then spend the rest of the day eating junk food and watching rubbish on TV. And then perhaps marking the change from day to evening with a G&T. Or two. This is a stressful time for all of us. Give yourself some processing time, let yourself catch up on the sleep you probably need, and enjoy doing very little – no need to feel guilty! This said, at some point, some structure in your day, and setting a few basic aims for each day is going to assist a return to normal life. Are you liable to sit around all day? If so, set yourself a step-related target to achieve every day. Go for a walk, get out into the garden more, give the house a spring clean or do a few star jumps! Are you liable to not bother cooking? If so, set yourself a target of cooking at least one proper meal, from scratch, every day. Do you find it easy to sit up until silly o'clock because

there's nowhere to be tomorrow? If so, set yourself a time limit for getting to bed. I really don't think there needs to be anything major, just a focus point or two to give your day some kind of structure and to help you feel that you're doing something. Beyond these basic ideas, this could be a great time to look at some bigger ideas if you feel so inclined. Perhaps you want to learn about something you've been interested in. There are lots of companies offering free or massively discounted educational courses at the moment. Perhaps you want to get into a structured exercise routine too. Again, there are lots of people offering free online workouts at the minute. And, of course, I'd be delighted to help you with more tailored exercise too. Overall, of course there is value in doing something productive and taking care of our health - but it is also ok to slow down for a while.
