Despite the lockdown, the wildlife hospital has remained open to take in vulnerable wildlife admissions. Hundreds of seasonal wildlife orphans and casualties are keeping the animal care staff busy, each wildlife patient needing around the clock care. When well enough, they move outside to recover prior to being released back into local habitats later in the year. If you do find a wildlife casualty, please call for further advice, the Brent Lodge team are more than happy to help. Tel: 01243 641672 email: enquiries@brentlodge.org or for further information you can visit their website at: www.brentlodge.org

Storrington & Sullington Neighbourhood Wardens Storrington Community Volunteer Hub We helped to set up the Storrington hub on 26 March along with a few volunteers. These volunteers have since become a life-line for many residents that are shielding from Covid. The hub is now completely run by volunteers and this has given us, as Wardens, the opportunity to return to our normal duties. The hub takes between 20 to 30 calls daily. All calls are processed and volunteers are tasked to do shopping, deliver medication or sort out transport needs for doctors or hospital appointments etc. Another important part of the hub is the weekly welfare calls the volunteers make. A friendly call to someone who is lonely or scared is so important and gives us confidence that people are being looked after. We would like to personally thank all of the volunteers for their continuing support and commitment to the hub. It is good to be out and about again as the eyes and ears of the parish now we have resumed our
duties. The main issue we have had to deal with is groups of young people meeting and maybe not understanding the social distancing rules that are still in force. To counter this we have distributed leaflet to the residents in the area giving information about how to report such incidents which are a criminal not a civil matter. We have also been able to help some residents by signposting them to services that can assist them, as there are still a lot of people who feel scared and unsure. We would both like to thank everyone for their kind words and support and it is nice to stop and talk to everyone. Washington PC With the Coronavirus restrictions still in force at the time of publication, the council has suspended all physical meetings. However, following a change to the rules governing council meetings, the May and June meetings took place online using the “Zoom” videoconferencing app, and full council meetings will continue virtually until restrictions are eased. The council is working with our partner Authorities to keep residents informed of available support during the crisis. Meanwhile, we continue to maintain the recreation ground, MUGA sports facility, Play Area and closed graveyard. The MUGA sports facility now has a wonderful new court surface and has reopened for public use. Please read the safety notice, and check this on the website before setting out. Information on the recreation ground and play area will also be posted as the situation evolves. Grass cutting continues, and H2 tree management has recently been completed, felling trees in danger of succumbing to ash die-back. Sadly we had to say goodbye to the much-loved conker tree on the Recreation Ground but we hope to replace it when ground conditions are favourable!

Development of several new homes on the site of the former Highways Depot in Old London Road is nearing completion, and the parish council has received £13,000 from the Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) relating to this development. As a council with a “made” neighbourhood plan, we receive an enhanced 25% of the total levy. Planning applications continue to be dealt with by HDC, and the parish council is able to make representations as a consultee. Any application due to be discussed will appear on pc agendas, both online and on the notice boards. However, residents are urged to check the HDC/SDNP planning portals for applications in their areas, and to follow the Local Planning Authorities’ published guidance on submitting consultation responses. Vacancies exist for parish councillors in both Washington and Heath Common Wards – it’s a chance to get involved in local issues and make a contribution. Full details and an application form can be obtained from the clerk, Zoe Savill clerk@washingtonparish.org.uk The next virtual meetings are July 6th and August 3rd. Members of the public are welcome to attend, and may apply to speak. For details, contact: clerk@washingtonparish.org.uk (tel: 07776 771921) www.washingtonparish.org.uk
