January 2017 Cover Photo By Denise Pritchard, Findon Valley Residents’ Association photo competition winner.

Welcome...

to January 2017 and a brand new year! I resolved a long time ago not to make new year resolutions which is easy enough to stick to... If 2016 hasn’t been the best year for you, January brings a metaphorical blank page so why not make a fresh start? Our main article this month puts the spotlight on local charity Home Start. Assisting struggling families with practical advice and hands-on support since 1973 the charity helps families in this area with at least one child under five. See page 24. With a new year upon us, you may be thinking of making changes around your home or garden. Andrew from Glorious Gardens gives ideas for designing a wildlife garden in this month’s gardening feature, see page 35. Valerie Martin looks back at the history of St John the Baptist Church in Findon and at some of the renovations which have taken place over the years. The repair work never ends it seems! See page 41

14 Motoring / Local News

Motoring news Record year for new car sales? Despite worries about the potential economic impact of Brexit, new-car sales are expected to exceed 2.7m when industry body the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) collates the annual data in the new year. As reported on www.telegraph.co.uk a variety of factors have assisted the sales. A strong pound meant cars produced abroad but sold in the UK are more profitable. Weak demand in other European markets resulted in car makers directing supply to where their vehicles were selling. Finally, cheap finance deals mean cars have never been more affordable.

Aston Martin DB4 A run of 25 Aston Martin DB4 GT Continuation models are being built to original specification for an estimated £1.5 million each (around half of what original DB4 GTs are currently valued at). The cars will be built next Autumn by the brand’s historic arm, Aston Martin Works, at Newport Pagnell, where the original car was constructed from 1959. Produced for four years until 1963, the DB4 GT won on its race debut at Silverstone with Sir Stirling Moss behind the wheel. Buyers of the track-only cars will be

offered the chance to receive training from Aston Martin’s professional drivers. www.autocar.co.uk

Green driving www.independent.co.uk The Dutch government has set a date for parliament to host a roundtable discussion that could see the sale of petrol and diesel-fuelled cars banned by 2025. If the measures proposed by the Labour Party in March are finally passed, it would join Norway and Denmark in making a concerted move to develop its electric car industry. Outside Europe, both India and China have demanded citizens use their cars on alternate days to reduce the exhaust fumes which are causing serious health problems for the populations of both nations. A new way of charging electric cars could help reduce the time it takes to minutes rather than hour reports the RAC on www.rac.co.uk The company Augmented Optics has revealed a new polymer material that can charge a car as fast as filling it up with fuel. The technology could totally transform the electric vehicle market.

Findon Valley Residents’ Association (FVRA) The 2017 Findon Valley calendar is still on sale from the Post Office in King’s Parade and Jacobs Steel offices in Worthing and Lancing. Priced at £5 we are raising money for the Chestnut Tree House Children’s Hospice. The photos from the November and December competitions, featured here, were taken by Georgie Heath (Betty the pig) and Gabrielle Johnstone (All Saints’ Church and Findon Valley Free Church). During 2016 the FVRA has made a real difference to the community:  A new bus shelter on the east side of theA24 Fin-

don Road and another one underway.

 More trees and wild flowers on The Gallops as well

as being involved with the children’s playground and getting more benches.

 New seasonal flowers for the two planters and an

additional FVRA noticeboard close to the bakery on King’s Parade.

 We organised a successful

Fun Dog Show that led to £1,001 being raised for PAWS Animal Sanctuary.

 2 Competitions were held, a

garden and a photo competition respectively sponsored by Michael Jones and Jacobs Steel estate agents, to build the local community spirit.

All this is thanks to the hard work from our team of volunteers combined with the income we receive from the membership subscriptions to ‘make things happen’. You can pay your 2017 membership subscription through the Post Office (which has recently been refurbished to help customers) or through bank transfer with these details available from membership@findonvalley.org. We now have over 950 households as FVRA members so we wish them and all Valley residents a happy and healthy New Year! Clapham Village Shop & Cafe Letters Dear Editor, I would like to respond to the anonymous reader letter in the December 2016 issue regarding Clapham Village Shop. I just want to say how appalled I am that s/he gave the reason for writing anonymously was because other villagers could “indulge in unpleasant hostility and a personal attack” against him/her. To suggest they would be violent is an outright slur on the good people of Clapham Village who support and campaign for our much loved shop/cafe, and if this person actually went into the shop/café, s/he would see for him/herself what kind and caring people work there and use it. There is huge support for the shop/café remaining in the village, from both inside and outside the village apart from a small minority, one of whom wrote the anonymous letter. (By the way, we are not a gated community and non-villagers are most welcome!) Yours, Mrs M Lloyd, Clapham Village By Email Dear Editor, Very sad to read this article on The Junction can't imagine how Neil Austin must be feeling having this all made public, after all that he has done and bought to the village. We have something unique in Clapham, and should all be pulling together and be proud of what he has achieved. Yours, A disappointed resident, The Street, Clapham. By Email Dear Editor, I am greatly disappointed that local residents in the two villages of Clapham and Patching and beyond, that love and support 'The Junction' are subjected to an article that claims to be “fact” based but is mainly just opinionated rhetoric. There are just a few people it seems, who are hell bent on destroying the fantastic reputation and good feeling that Neil Austin has created with 'The Junction'. I feel very saddened that Neil is subjected to such an article, claiming disharmony in the villages after the fantastic community spirit building he has achieved across both villages and far beyond. I hope that this article is allowed to be challenged in your next issue. Yours, A Resident of Clapham Village, By Email

SUSSEX LOCAL Worthing Charity Receives £20k The Worthing-based Queen Alexandra Hospital Home (QAHH) has been awarded £20,000 by the RAF Beneveolent Fund, to use towards its core nursing and rehabilitation services for residents who are ex-RAF. QAHH resident, Larry Ryan, was a Senior Aircraftman in the RAF during the late 1960s. In 2007 he suffered a very serious brain injury following a fall down a flight of stairs, and was left in a critical condition ventilated and intubated in intensive care. After a spell in King’s College London Hospital, he was transferred to QAHH in 2008. As a result of his Acquired Brain Injury, Larry is unable to walk and is very dependent on the nursing and care staff at QAHH. The multi-disciplinary care, which he has received since his admission, has been tailored over the years to give him the very best quality of life possible. His mobility and independence have been greatly improved with the help of QAHH’s Wheelchair Technicians and on-site wheelchair clinic. QAHH Trusts and Foundations Fundraising Officer, Clare Smith, said, “We are so grateful to the RAF Benevolent Fund for this generous grant. The money received means that we are one step closer to providing our first-rate nursing and care services for another year to the RAF veterans who live at QAHH.” The Queen Alexandra Hospital Home Boundary Rd, Worthing, BN11 4LJ 01903 218444 www.qahh.org.uk

Domestic violence against men By Karen Fleming Consultant Solicitor at Bennett Griffin Worthing We often associate domestic violence in a marriage/ cohabitee situation, with an aggressive man assaulting a defenceless woman. When I was at University, in the 80’s, I wrote my Dissertation on ‘Police Intervention in Domestic Violence situations’ and as part of my research I interviewed a senior Metropolitan Police Officer, visited the first Women’s Refuge in Chiswick and read numerous books and articles. At that time I don’t recall ever reading about, (or speaking to anyone who referred to), the fact that it is not only women that are victims of domestic violence but men can be too. Around 10% of domestic violence, now reported to the police, will be by male victims, but in reality the figure is far higher as many men suffer in silence. In March 2015, Ken Gregory a victim of domestic violence was reported in the National Press as saying: ‘As a man, who is a bit older and who isn’t exactly small, there is a perception that you can’t be a victim of domestic violence. I was worried that people would assume that it was my fault and she was the victim. There is still a perception that, as a strong man against a weaker female, you must have been the protagonist.” The couple, he 65, she 60, had been married for 5 years and there had been previous incidents of violence

against Ken. On the day of the final incident, Ken was due to take flowers to the grave of his former deceased wife, but instead the couple rowed over finances. Maureen Gilbertson, his wife at the time, left the room claiming she was going to make tea, but instead returned with a jug of freshly boiled water and poured it over him, causing horrendous burns to 14 % of his body. Maureen was convicted of GBH and jailed for 5 years. Ken’s plea to other men following his wife’s conviction was simple; ‘If other men find themselves in this position I would say don’t be embarrassed or ashamed - my case goes to show this can happen to anybody’. Issues of domestic violence are devastating but swift action can be taken to protect the victim and advise them on how to remove themselves from a violent domestic situation. As an experienced family law solicitor I have over 25 years’ experience practicing in all areas of family law including domestic violence. If you need help on this or any other area of Family Law, such as divorce, separation, Pre Nups, living together agreements, child or financial issues don’t hesitate to get in touch via; Email: Kf@bennett-Griffin.co.uk 01903 229935 or mobile 07961 280878 1 Liverpool Gardens, Worthing BN11 1TE www.bennettgriffin.co.uk

Home-Start Offering support and friendship for families By Lynn Smith Sometimes even the most dedicated parents can face challenges that prevent them doing all they want for their children. When those recognisable parental issues of sleep deprivation, juggling work and finances, or isolation are added to a mix of other factors such as physical ill health, depression or domestic abuse, the world for these families can become overwhelming. Fortunately, voluntary organisation HomeStart is there to offer support. An independent registered charity, Home-Start is committed to promoting the welfare of families with at least one child under five years of age and believes children need a happy and secure childhood and that parents play the key role in giving their children a good start in life and helping them achieve their full potential. The Home-Start schemes started in 1973 with the first Sussex based scheme established in 1998 - CHAMS, covering Crawley, Horsham and MidSussex, was closely followed by the Worthing & Adur and the Arun schemes. Chichester & District began supporting families in 2008. Sadly, the Worthing & Adur scheme recently closed due to lack of funds. Lois Rowlands and Bridget Richardson are Managers of Home-Start schemes – Lois became Manager of Home-Start Chichester & District at the beginning of this year, having been a Home-Start volunteer prior to this, she is also a trustee for a national breastfeeding charity (La Leche League GB); whilst Bridget came to Home-Start Arun from Victim Support and from having spent many years working with the Body Shop and the Body Shop Foundation. Both women agree that every year Home-Start receives far more referrals than it has the resources to support. Lois illustrates this fact: “Arun, with the largest district population in West Sussex, appears in the 2014 Index of Multiple Deprivation as having two wards in the top ten percent, and three in the top twenty percent most deprived areas of England.” A statistic echoed by Bridget, “In Chichester a rising number of

families were identified as vulnerable by health visitors and social services. Three of the four wards in Chichester are also identified with a high index of multiple deprivations. Many of the families that we support in the north of our area (Chichester & District) experience rural isolation, poor and expensive transport links and difficulty accessing shops and services.“ Whilst, from the outside, West Sussex may be viewed as an affluent county, there are many families – from all areas of the county – who have little support locally and need a little help when times get tough. Home-Start’s model is a simple one - that of one parent supporting another, but underlying this is a more complex blend of trust, confidence, self-esteem, coping and wellbeing. Services offered include home visiting, helping parents to access local services and Family Groups where parents can meet, talk and create their own local support network. Lois and Bridget know that early intervention works, and recognise the importance of a whole family approach. They believe that the Home-Start approach is unique: “… because the support and friendship we offer to families through our volunteers is absolutely tailored to the needs of the individual.”

They also believe that “ … listening is the greatest gift volunteers can give to families, many of whom may never have had the chance to talk openly about their feelings.” Volunteers visit a family for two to three hours a week to offer emotional and practical support and guidance, and Lois says that, “Many ‘matches’ continue as life-long friendships.” Kelly first sought help from Home-Start over fourteen years ago and over the years the Family Group has helped support and protect her children from an abusive ex-partner and to build bridges within her family. She says that being listened to “helped me to understand why I felt so low and what I should do to repair these feelings.” She is now taking West Sussex Council courses to be a support group volunteer and hopes to, eventually, volunteer for Home-Start, “and give back a little of what I’ve received.” Home-Start works alongside other statutory services amongst them: West Sussex Think Family and the Early Help teams; they take referrals from health visitors, Children's Centre Family Support Workers, midwives, social workers and community nursery nurses. They also take a number of self-referrals each year. Lois puts the importance of their work into perspective when she confirms that, “Since the year 2000 in excess of 3,000 children and their families have been supported by Home-Start Arun. In the last year alone, our volunteers have supported 134 families and their 286 children.“ Whilst Bridget says: “Last year Chichester & District supported 96 families and their 205 children.” 175 families were supported across CHAMS. Each Home-Start scheme is self-funded and, as with most charities, fund-raising is a vital tool in the organisations survival kit. Lois explains the reality, “ … we are each individual charities applying to trusts, county, town and parish councils and personal donations from the community, alongside the more traditional fundraising methods.”

28 Local Charity / Finance Looking ahead, Lois Rowlands says that, “Arun has been successful with both the Big Lottery Fund and Children in Need in the last few months, but this success still means finding a further 45 percent of our budget from other means.” Chichester & District, which survived a major fundraising crisis in 2014 by restructuring its staff team and reducing staff hours, is also part funded by a grant from BBC Children in Need and is Bridget says, “Planning a prestigious art exhibition and sale in October 2017.” At Home-Start’s core are its staff and volunteers. Lois says that finding enough volunteers to cover all of the referrals received is another issue the charity faces, and that staff can support only a certain number of volunteers safely, so funds are needed to recruit. Volunteers undertake 40 hours of training, covering topics such as safeguarding, confidentiality, bereavement, depression and the power of play. Volunteers come with a range of parenting skills budgeting, cooking, managing twins and triplets, coping with post-natal depression. Gill has been a HomeStart volunteer for over six years and is convinced that, “Thanks to the excellent preparatory course followed by the continuous support and supervision of the Home-Start team, including recognising their prowess at matching volunteers to families, it is very rare not to achieve positive outcomes.” Volunteers also help out in the office and hold fund-

raising events, doing vital work that keeps essential funds coming into the charity’s coffers. Lois says that also behind the scenes are the Trustees, whom she describes as, “A small, dedicated group who ensure the highest standards are upheld and that the governance of our scheme complies with the Charity Commission standards and those we set ourselves to give the very best support to our community’s children.” The charity is always looking to attract people who have the skills and dedication required to work as a trustees, particularly skills in areas such as Human Resources and IT. When asked what the greatest challenge faced by Home-Start, Lois and Bridget concur: “Long-term sustainability is the key for all charities right now. Without it our staff and volunteers have no stability, and our families face an uncertain future of support.”

Planning for 2017 By Richard Cohen JP FPFS ACII MCSI Chartered Financial Planner If there’s one thing that 2016 taught us it was to expect the unexpected. At the start of the year Donald Trump was a billionaire reality TV star with a fantasy of being president, Mark Carney (the Governor of Bank of England) was talking about when interest rates would rise and no one had even heard of the term Brexit. Look at how things have changed twelve months on. 2017 brings its own set off accepted norms, predictions and, I expect, some surprises. These unexpected events will all impact people’s finances for better or worse and cause people to update the plans they have for their future. Benjamin Franklin said “If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail” and its driven into us how important planning for the future is. I think it’s also important to remember the words of less often quoted Mike Tyson “Everybody has a plan until they get punched in the mouth”. Doggedly sticking to a plan regardless of how the world is changing is rarely sensible and it’s definitely important to update your plans to adapt to changing circumstances. A good plan will factor in that things

may not turn out exactly as you hoped. In the case of planning your finances, you may purchase insurance against unlikely but undesirable events or diversify your portfolio to include investments that will perform well when the rest is performing poorly. With a well-constructed, adaptable and balanced plan there should be no need to panic with every piece of news. As the Brexit and US election results became apparent, we saw billions made and lost in markets around the world, only for most markets to end up roughly where they started within a week. That’s not to say these events do not have long term consequences, it’s just that they will take time to play out. It’s rarely going to be apparent on the next day or even the next month what the long term implications will be. Perhaps 2016 has taught us to expect the unexpected and the unexpected thing about 2017 will be it all runs as expected. www.nsurefinancial.co.uk or to arrange a free review please call Sarah Gray on 01903 821010

In Your Garden Monthly gardening ideas and tasks by Andrew Staib of Glorious Gardens countless insects and amphibians. A lot of people think ponds are a lot of work but if you are not interested in keeping fish and thus need the water filtered or pumped for a water feature there is not that much to do. When you put plants in them carefully research whether they won’t spread too much and every so often scoop the pond weed off the surface of the water. Once every 5 -7 years you can empty a good amount of water and take out any silt that has collected at the bottom.

Designing a Wildlife Garden

Compost

The news can be depressing about the destruction of nature the world over and the UK has seen a massive decline in most species since the 50s with loss of habitat as the greatest single cause. Every couple of years a plant species becomes extinct in the UK alone.

You can buy barrels that are above ground with a stand that allows you to turn them which moves the compost around and aerates the material. This is the most effective way to compost plus there is no rodent problems. And what a joy to know the potato peelings

However private gardens account for nearly 20% of our urban landscape and they are the one place that is in our control to nurture and encourage wildlife. They can be our small but important way to contribute to what we love and there is nothing more satisfying than planting a shrub and seeing it feed a dozen or so different insects with its pollen and sap or see birds eat the berries of a tree we planted a year ago.

Hard Landscaping Think hard about hard landscaping. Many gardens change ownership every decade and often one garden is pulled out and another put in its place. You can try bark paths rather than paved ones, decking from sustainable pine trees rather than sandstone all the way from India or shingle rather than cement. Also rather than buy oak materials (it is highly unlikely that oak is being re planted as quickly as it is being used and most of it is coming from what is left of oak forests in Eastern Europe) Julia Young, the manager of WWF’s Global Forest and Trade Network programme at WWF-UK recently said: “We purchased goods (oak) from 17 companies, and not one could provide evidence that they had carried out sufficient due diligence.

Ponds Ponds are powerhouses of nature, not just providing water to drink and wash but are also the home to

tasks include not buying peat based composts of which there are surprising amount that still do in your local garden centre.

When you chose your next plant, you can think of its food and shelter giving properties.

Collect rainwater

Medium trees for the garden- the top supermarket of trees are Rowan, Malus, Yew and Buddlea.

The more we can use rainwater from our roves the less dams have to be built and maintained and the more money you will save if your water is metered. Also if you are topping up your pond it is best to use rainwater to avoid the chlorine and lime in the tap water.

Shrubs can include Skimmia, Catoneaster and Pyracantha. Perennials with fragrant flowers are good- like Knautia, Scabios, Helenium, Rudbekia, Chives, Roses and Lavender. The RHS online also has a comprehensive list of plants that are good for pollinators.

Boxes Bee boxes, hedgehog boxes, bird boxes and bat boxesmake your garden into a veritable city of homes for wildlife.

Peat Other environmentally friendly

Wild Spaces You can leave a bit of your lawn uncut. You would be amazed at how many little bugs love the privacy and edible seed heads of long grass. Plus it looks good and a swath of long grass is an antidote to having to be in complete control of everything in our lives!

Mulch Use mulch to control the weeds on your beds. This helps keep a

What to do in January

Leave the leaves in the beds this year Hard to do but leaving the leaves about allows all sorts of hibernating insects to burrow away and hide till the Spring. Leaving old piles of logs in the corner can also provide homes for the bigger creatures including hedgehogs. You can see your self as only partially owning your garden, and that the thousands of fungi, millions of ants and wood lice, bees, birds, bats and voles also need a home. Like a benevolent King or Queen you can provide a rich and pleasant land where there is enough for everyone!

Where to visit this January If you want to walk off those extra Xmas calories you can take a trip up to Kew Gardens. They have such a huge range of trees even in the middle of winter there is so much to see. Plus you can hang out in the cafes or Tropical Greenhouse for a warm break. They also have after dark tours.

 The biggest jobs are the pruning of deciduous plants like Roses, Wysteria and fruit trees. The best place to go is Youtube for Pruning! Example- If you type in “Pruning a small apple tree” you will get all sorts of well meaning gardeners showing you what they do. Choose to listen to an expert and you quickly can tell. Also make sure the apple tree looks like your one as there are different types.  Also in January you can sow in your greenhouse all sorts of vegetables ready to be transplanted in Spring into your plot.  Plus you can start to force your Rhubarb by placing as big a pot as you can find over the heads.

More About Asbestos By Chris Ennis FRICS Over As many of my readers will know, asbestos comes in many forms – blue, white or brown. All can be potentially unsafe in use. They were commonly used in buildings constructed up until the late 1980s, and occasionally beyond. Asbestos materials were used both for insulation purposes and as a fire prevention barrier. Only recently, I was involved with the purchase of a modern estate house where the undersides of a stairway in a 1980s house were confirmed to be lined in asbestos insulation board (AIB), which contained significant quantities of brown and white asbestos. The modern safe replacement for asbestos insulation board is currently sold under the Trade Names ‘Asbestolux’ or ‘Supalux’. These boards use vermiculite and other fibres to replace the thermal insulation and mechanical properties of asbestos. A surveyors’ trick to visually identify ‘Asbestolux’/’Supalux’ is to shine a light on the board and you will see that the vermiculite gives a sparkling finish, with the light reflecting off it. AIB does not sparkle, but there is often a mottled effect on the surface (these are clumps of brown asbestos fibres mottling the finish). It is harder to tell the difference to the untrained eye if the boards are painted, or otherwise sealed.

Stop!

AIB is different from asbestos-cement in that it contains brown, white and occasionally blue asbestos fibres. AIB was mostly used internally as firebreaks or shuttering and virtually all removal works are required to be fully licensed by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), following a formal notification period, and removal under controlled conditions. After removal, by licensed asbestos-removal contractors air-testing to count the number of airborne fibres is required. Asbestos cement is harder than AIB and is typically used externally, often seen on garage roofs in its corrugated profile form, or in the soffits at the lower levels of roof structures. AC usually only contains white asbestos and, sometimes remedial works can be carried out by non-licensed contractors. AC is normally dimpled like the surface of a golf ball whereas AIB is normally, but not always, smooth-finished. Asbestos should always be treated with care, and never sawn, sand -papered or otherwise abraded. Happy New Year to all! Sheep Pens of Yesteryear By Valerie Martin

I have found the details of the various renovations at St. John the Baptist Church in Findon over the centuries, informative and interesting, as well as a little amusing. How many times through the ages have the parishioners of Findon been appealed to, and subsequently given, pledges and donations towards the Church Restoration Fund? As recently as August, 1996, half of the church was sectioned off as hazardous. This was in case plaster descended on the congregation from overhead following downpours of rain. The nave was unable to be utilised on Sundays for some four weeks until a provisional repair to the ceiling was completed. Above inset is a photograph of work being carried out on St. John the Baptist church roof in the Autumn 1998. Dangerous conditions have dogged the building over the generations. Robert Cholmeley was born in Lincolnshire in 1819. At the age of forty, and still unmarried, he accepted the position of Vicar of Findon in 1859. He took up residence at The Rectory in the main street and made a few radical alterations to the property. He lived with his elder sister, Katherine, who found fulfilment in her work as fundholder. In 1866 the formidable task of the Great Restoration of Findon church was commenced and carried out along the lines of the design of Sir Giles Gilbert Scott. The most important episode during the Reverend Robert Cholmeley’s life in Findon was in 1867 when the Great Restoration of the church was finally and officially completed on 9th July. This was at a cost of £2,500 and among other amenities gave seating for 394 persons, and included the facing of the whole of the façade with dressed flints as seen today. The ancient font, probably dated c. 1200, was also replaced with a replica.

On St. John the Baptist’s Day, 29th August, 1868, the Reverend Cholmeley entertained his flock with a sermon and graphic narrative on the state of Findon Church preceding the repairs. His words perhaps ring a bell today: "Let me remind you of the condition of our church two years ago. The area was filled with cumbrous pews almost to the steps of the altar. The pulpit and reading desk were alike inconvenient and unsightly. The noble span of the roof with all its curious and intricate arrangement of ancient beams was concealed by a flat whitewashed ceiling; and the now free and lofty space was further obstructed by two galleries; one over the font and adjoining sittings (erected in 1771), the other in the north-west corner of the Church over the pews by the north door. To enter the latter gallery the beautiful west lancet window had been converted into a doorway, and an incongruous excrescence of brick porch and steps added outside the church. The whole of the eastern piers of the church were in a crushed and dangerous condition; and the wall plates and much of the timber in the roof were decayed and distorted. The restoration of these, the underpinning of the walls, the thorough repair of the roof and the draining have been the heaviest expenses. The tower was much dilapidated, and the basement used as a lumber room. The Mortuary (Manorial) Chapel was closed and rapidly falling into decay". The "cumbrous pews" as described were apparently awkwardly crammed during the tenure of a vicar unnamed… into the confined area of the body of the church. They were of a fixed nature with high sides and even complete with doors. These congested and overcrowded enclosures were of various shapes and dimensions and seemed to have been conceived and erected by different families, heedless of the design of neighbouring seating arrangements. Perhaps there had been rivalry as to whose was the best? The odd assortment of Findon pews were during the Reverend Cholemeley days rather amusingly nicknamed "sheep pens" by the inhabitants — I think this delightful and rather apt for Findon. If one pauses to imagine the fabric of the church prior to this mid-nineteenth century restoration, it would seem that the church was in the process of tumbling down around the vicar’s ears. The refurbishing venture was sympathetically carried out resulting in a dignified example of a flint building, with a large nave gable and imposing broached spire rising above. Sir Giles Gilbert Scott was in high spirits with his architectural results and recorded the structure as "almost unique". Fortunately for Findon, his work left the original outline of the church unaltered, unlike some rejuvenations carried out in Victorian days. Further stories of the church through the centuries can be found on www.findonvillage.com

Give Your Furniture a “Facelift” By Andrew Byford of Barcombe Wood Finish Ltd How long have you been living with stains on a chest of drawers and bookcase or worn patches on a dining room table, or any table for that matter? Likewise living with a broken hinge or damaged lock can be frustrating. “I will fix it one day”. Perhaps that day is closer than thought. Andrew says that hinges can quite easily be replaced from the local hardware shop. A dull finish is often remedied with the use of a beeswax polish (not spray). Wood dries out and simply requires ‘feeding’. It need not cost the earth to brighten up an old piece. Many items over years of use become dull, scratched chipped and broken, but underneath the scratch and the dull varnish the wood is unchanged. A skilled French polisher can re-finished and repair that table, chest of drawers or cupboard to a ‘like-new’ condition. It does not have to be an antique either just a good piece of wood. If it is antique, then Andrew believes in sympathetic restoration that is cleaning it up and repairing the finish making it looked loved and not ‘new’.

Happy New Year to all our clients! Thank you to all our clients old and new for their support through 2016.

Alternatively, give your wood a total make-over and change its colour. Many items that are dark in colour are made of a light wood, and varnished dark. Likewise a pale washed out wood can be stained to a rich and warmer shade. Bringing an entire new look to a good solid older piece of furniture. Andrew says; “A new year is upon us and so very often thoughts go to planning repairs and redecoration around the home, and also at the workplace so do the same for the wood fittings and furniture in your life. It is a form of recycling really.” Old or new, breathe new life into your wood at Barcombe Wood Finish Ltd and remember, French Polishing is not just for antiques.
