10 years in publishing! Happy Birthday to us! This month our magazine is ten years old. We started with just one magazine covering Storrington and West Chiltington - originally called ‘Key Local’ - and now have six separate editions. I recall visiting the businesses in Storrington with some trepidation, to seek advertising. Happily at my first stop I met James Williams owner of MJ Cars who booked (and paid for) a full year of advertising for his and also his mother’s business. We still work with several businesses who took space in our first ever issue and are grateful to everyone who took a chance on me and a new magazine. As is customary at these times, I would like to thank all the wonderful local people we have worked with. Our superb distributors, some of whom have been with us for over 8 years; the brilliant team at Evonprint Printers (which very sadly went into administration recently) who helped us get started and never missed a deadline; our knowledgeable editorial contributors and not forgetting Sheila Mills, my mum, who has helped in so many ways and has also supplied many of our wonderful cover images over the years. Many thanks to you too for reading and supporting our advertisers who of course make the whole venture possible. To celebrate our anniversary we have produced a short video which you can view from the home page of our website.

I could tell you all about Woodlands House and its facilities as if I was describing a hotel, for example the beautiful individual rooms, the designer bathrooms, wi-fi, HD TV, telephones, spacious gardens, etc etc etc. all of which Woodlands has! However when I was searching for a room for my own mother all those years ago I do ROOM AVAILABLE NOW! not remember any of these concerns being uppermost in my mind. What I do remember is the fear of making the wrong decision, whether I was "doing the right thing remembering "don't ever put me in an old peoples home" but knowing in my heart and head that this was the very best decision I could make. What was so heartbreaking was the role reversal of taking and accepting the responsibility of making such a life changing choice on behalf of a loved one, and it was the hardest decision I had ever had to make. Finding the type of care available within the many different homes is daunting in itself. Do I want a new large modern home with all the "facilities" bright walls, all new staff or do I want the home that offers the nearest possible likeness to a home? With familiar staff, many who have been at the same home for years and years with the maximum experience and ongoing training within that same home with a manager who is in daily contact with all residents and staff? Do I want to see every certificate for every course and pictures of members of staff because there are so many, or do I want to be greeted by the same team week in week out? These same staff knowing my loved one not only during the day but also at night when they are alone and feeling lost? Knowing - without referring to records - that it's Horlicks and not chocolate that she will appreciate at 2am? 26 Charity Profile
Enable Me... ...Enabling disabled people, by raising awareness Chris Jay is a man with a mission. The CEO and Chairman of West Sussex based charity Enable Me, wants to make his organisation more visible – to raise its profile amongst the schools and businesses of West Sussex, and beyond.
Chris Jay CEO and Chairman
Enable Me is a small user-led charity providing disability awareness days in schools – allowing children of all ages to learn about the needs, challenges and unique life experience of disabled people, from disabled people. The charity also provides specialised disability awareness training for sports coaches, teaching professionals and businesses; exploring language, legislation, communication and how to make the work environment more inclusive. This year Enable Me will be expanding its portfolio of services by delivering new work in the form of Disability Access Audits and Autism Awareness workshops. Originally established in 2004 by Helen Sage, a secondary school teacher inspired by her disabled son, David, to run workshops in order to dispel
negative myths and attitudes faced by disabled children, young people and adults. Over the intervening years Enable Me has provided disability awareness training to over 50,000 school children, teachers and professionals working with disabled children, young people and adults and has been through many changes. Born with cerebral palsy, Chris Jay joined Enable Me in 2008 as a volunteer. He was working on a part-time Masters degree, when a friend called up and suggested he might like to join him volunteering at a small charity promoting disabled awareness. From volunteer, Chris became Deputy Project Manager, supporting the then Chief Executive, before becoming Enable Me’s Chairman and CEO himself. Chris describes himself as being: “Delighted and thrilled to be in charge of an organisation whose work is so close to my own heart.” With a degree in Politics and a Masters in Global Security, and as a wheelchair user for over twenty years, Chris is able to deliver Enable Me’s training from first hand experience.

28 Charity Profile Unsurprisingly, one of the factors driving changes to the services offered by Enable Me is fluctuating levels of funding. A few years ago, after a significant funding stream dried up, Chris was led to make a tough decision: to take the charity out of the business of running clubs for disabled children and concentrate instead on delivering disability awareness training to schools and businesses. Although the charity covers an area of a sixty-mile radius, providing services across West Sussex, Hampshire and Surrey, Chris is keen to make the charity better known, to increase its visibility outside of the local area and to reach even more schools and businesses across West Sussex. However, he is full of praise and gratitude for the local community. The people of Littlehampton, where the charity is based, have in Chris’s words “been amazing, they have helped raise tens of thousands of pounds (over the years that Chris has been involved with the charity) … and support us every time we do an event.” Chris illustrates just how lucky Enable Me has been in finding support from the local community when he tells me that the charity recently received donations totalling around £10,000 from the local community; funding, from various donors – including the Co-op’s local funds, from Littlehampton’s Bonfire Society, a Golf Day hosted by Littlehampton Golf club and a £5,000 from a donor who wishes to be anonymous. A pool of funding that will allow Enable Me to offer awareness training to Sussex schools, that would ordinarily pay a fee to receive, free of charge. Chris reckons that the average cost of taking Enable Me into a school is £500 – so the charity currently has capacity to offer free training to around twenty schools. Chris says that ideally he would like to have a waiting list of schools eager to host Enable Me’s awareness training, and says he would love to hear from any schools interested in organising disability awareness training in their school. However, one of the challenges that the charity faces is that of being known and gaining access to schools in order to present their training. As well as the expected difficulty of getting past “the gatekeeper”expected as a result of heightened security in and around our schools - a number of other factors, not least being the lack of money available to state schools, and the compression of the curriculum, make getting access to schools, in Chris’s words: “Bloody awkward.” This is the first prong of Chris’s drive to make the
SUSSEX LOCAL Building awareness with local schoolchildren
charity more visible. Whilst wanting to make schools aware of the charity and what it does, he realises just how difficult it is for schools to fund external training in these cash strapped days, and he is keen for schools to know that even if the funds run out then Enable Me can go to its supporters and say, “we have a school that wants our training and needs funding.” Chris’s ideal is to make Enable Me practically selfsufficient, which is where the second prong of making the charity more visible come in. Taking awareness training into businesses is an area that Chris “would like to make a big push for.” He stresses that Enable Me is “not looking for handouts from businesses” but that the charity wants to work with them, providing an

All of Enable Me’s disability awareness training is designed and delivered by disabled people. For instance, Enable Me trainers delivers training to sports coaches, sports science students and leisure centre staff, are active athletes with disabilities and able to offer a unique insight into the challenges facing disabled people who want to participate in sport. Enable Me has two full-time staff and Chris who is also fulltime, but on a voluntary basis. The charity is always on the look out for new volunteers with disabilities, to go into schools and businesses. Chris says current volunteers have a mix of disabilities, mainly physically disabled and he would be interested in working with someone with autism, who would be comfortable delivering training from an autistic persons point of view. The charity also requires able-bodied volunteers – who can drive and are able to help co-ordinate volunteers on the training day. Last year Enable Me made 24 school visits - reaching 5,500 pupils, and seven professional training days, to businesses, leisure centres and sports clubs, reaching 200 people, delivered by thirteen volunteers. In November, Chris delivered training to Coutt’s Bank , the private bank and wealth management organisa-

tion, which generated their first business case study and may lead to an ongoing relationship with the bank. Spending time chatting to Chris Jay reveals a man not only driven to take his experiences out into the wider world, but also someone with the enthusiasm, intellectual engagement and dry sense of humour that must make his training sessions, particularly those delivered to businesses, not only informative and thought provoking but entertaining. 36 Gardening
In Your Garden Monthly gardening ideas and tasks by Andrew Staib of Glorious Gardens Space Creating Tricks The creative use of curves can make your garden seem to go on and on past the fence lines. Mirrors can reflect the light from one side to another especially if the area is very dark (make sure they are not very big and in the open as birds will fly into them). A small lawn can be made into a receding trapeze shape to give the effect of a greater sense of distance. Rhythmic planting can draw the eye to the repetition rather than straight to the end of the bed.
Garden Design Ideas for the Small Garden When designing your small garden I recommend buying very large and bold pots for a small courtyard garden. Small pots look like you are trying to squeeze as much as you can into the space where one big pot gives the space a sense of power and gravitas. The bigger the better sometime as the pots, seating or raised beds exude a sense of generosity of spirit.
Parts of the garden can be hidden from the frontal view so one has to go on a little walk to see what is around the corner. This can be done in the smallest of gardens. Painting the back walls and fences a dark grey, black or dark green can make the back of the garden recede to a greater depth than it actually is. Growing a mix of evergreen and deciduous climbers can also have this effect and give the visitor a sense of interest with splashes of colour taking their attention away from the limits of the garden.
As with trees- it is much more effective to buy one really wonderful big specimen than three little shrubs. With paving materials because you don’t have much area to pave you can go for an expensive basalt or porcelain tile which will offer you endless pleasure. Also, investing in a really original sculpture can give your space a sense of creativity and purpose. The Elements You can bring the elements into a small garden- in fact in designing your garden this is imperative as most smaller gardens are quite hemmed in and often don’t have other neighbouring greenery to enrich the outer perimeter. A fire bowl can be stored under the stairs or in your shed and brought out when a few friends pop over. Once you sip a G and T and the fire is roaring under the stars you will forget where you are and your little space will feel timeless! A water feature will give you the sound of water which is generally calming for the nerves and gives an echo of larger bodies of water that you have visited in the past. Birds will frequent you feature or pond and the sky will fill the reflections. Movement- Ornamental grasses, dwarf willow trees or pendulous trees like Betula pendulosa will sway in the wind and bring an element of wildness and unpredictability.

through the door Layers Most small garden designs shy away from trees and large shrubs as the fear is that the garden will look over crowded. However the exact opposite can be true. A line of obedient, shaped little shrubs can make the garden feel restricted and limited. When designing a small back garden I will often concentrate on establishing a larger tree is a natural corner of the garden. Even if the garden is less than 10 meters long an apple tree with maximum height of 4 meters can give the garden a sense of age and majesty, and bring in the feeling of a complex ecosystem than reminds us of the countryside. Under the larger tree one can plant a small swath of ornamental grasses, mid size shrubs or bulbs that can evoke a larger landscape. Multi functional If you can make your garden for you with multiply functions it will be a much more enticing place to be. Herbs can be grown from hanging baskets, tomatoes up the sunny shed wall, climbing roses can be piled

up over sheds and up conifers, and fruit can be grown as espaliers along the edges of paths. Good luck if you decide to re think your small space. And if you have a bigger garden you can create a network of smaller gardens within it to give it the feeling of a never ending exploration.
Where to Visit in June Ambrose Place Back Gardens, Worthing This year the group of more than a dozen tiny terrace gardens in Ambrose Place in Worthing will be celebrating thirty years of opening through the NGS. These gardens have been described as a ‘horticultural phenomenon’ with the variety of styles and layouts to visit in one area. There is the traditional cottage and Victorian gardens, to Mediterranean and Moroccan themed spaces and there is plenty to inspire ideas and prove that small can be beautiful. Romantic Rome I have travelled a fair bit but I think Rome may be the most beautiful as well as the most extraordinary city I’ve been to. Even the kids were entranced by the combination of Roman ruins, medieval architecture and monuments seemingly on every road we walked down. It is a fantastic walking city we managed to get the kids to walk miles fortified by ice creams, delicious Italian food and their imaginations. My son in particular was fascinated by the Roman architecture and ruins – the The beautiful Coliseum Coliseum being a favourite! We had four days, but could have perhaps done with another day. However if you do want to see the sights quickly, an open tour bus would be a great option. We took the pedestrian route and did the sights at a kids’ pace instead! Be sure to take a good pair of shoes and be prepared to eat a lot of delicious ice cream, do a lot of walking and let your imagination take you back to the Roman times! Interested in a holiday? Bury CE Primary School Coldwaltham Primary The Rise of Bury CE Primary It probably comes as no great surprise to you that providing the highest quality education is the number one aim for us all at Bury CE Primary. To put it bluntly, trying to do this in the current educational climate is hard. Whilst under the constant pressure of reduced funding, ever-increasing accountability and constantly shifting goalposts – it is like trying to score a goal of stunning artistry, taking on an entire team single handedly (think Payetvs Middlesbrough), navigating your way past every single player before cheekily chipping it over the goalkeeper; only to realise the government decided not to give you a ball. Oh, and they are not sure football is the game we are playing, but they are not going to tell us the rules until just before the end – it is easier for them to pick the winners then. I jest, but the funding problem is relentless and we are all trying to do some very creative things to best support our children. At Bury we are going through some staffing changes, we have just got a new teacher for our youngest children who started after Easter and we are in the process of appointing a new teacher for our oldest children. This gives me a fantastic opportunity to get the best possible staff who are firmly with me in developing a rich curriculum unique to Bury. This is hugely exciting to me and I have no doubt will help to continue the huge positivity we have around school at the moment. I have heard from parents that some of you thought the school had closed down – I can assure you all, we are very much open. Indeed, in the not -to-distant future we will be holding a couple of open house events, one of which will be an art exhibition with the theme – Leave Only Footprints. What I would really like is to be able to show off some of the talent in the local area. If you would like to be involved in exhibiting at the school please do give us a call 01798 831502. It would be fantastic to show off the children’s work alongside that of local artists. One pot of funding that we do have access to has to be used for developing sport in school. I decided not to tell any of the children, staff or parents what I was up to with ours so that it came as a big surprise when they returned from the Easter holidays. Suffice to say the children (and staff and parents!) were very excited when part of the tired old chain-link fence around the playground had been replaced by this… Unfortunately, I have run out of time to tell you about our work up on the Downs and acquiring a woodland – yes you did read that correctly, a woodland! See www.bury.w-sussex.sch.uk to see what else we have been up to. Thomas Moore
A bright future for the pupils at Coldwaltham.
Ofsted inspected Coldwaltham School in March this year, two years after the 2015 report which indicated there was room for improvement. The School is very pleased to now be judged as “Good” in its overall effectiveness; the quality of teaching, the personal development of pupils, the achievements of pupils and the school leadership are now judged to be “Good”. Ofsted praised the work of Governors, Headteacher and team leaders. Mary Wratten and Ann Hewitt, the co-chairs of the Governing Body expressed their support and thanks to Jon Gilbert and the team for their work in achieving this result: “In the short time Jon Gilbert has been Headteacher, he and his new team of teachers, teaching assistants and office staff have brought this beautiful village school in the South Downs National Park to the judgement by Ofsted as ‘Good’. We look forward to helping the team continue to shape the learning environment with its wide range of facilities and clubs for an exciting future.” Jon Gilbert, Headteacher, expressed his thanks to the Governors and to his team of teachers, classroom assistants and staff who all contributed to this success: ‘We are delighted the hard work and dedication of the team has been recognised with a ‘Good’ Ofsted grading. We realise that this is just the beginning and we will continue to work to ensure the children at Coldwaltham School receive the highest quality learning experiences possible, enabling them to succeed’. www.st-james-coldwaltham.w-sussex

Many adults are nervous about reading aloud and children are no different. Which is why each week, Reilly and his owner Jackie, from Pets as Therapy (PAT) head over to Fittleworth School to read with the children. The nationwide Read2dogs scheme allows children to gain confidence and improve their reading in a relaxed atmosphere, with dog and child sitting together. Graham Bloomfield, Headmaster says ‘the children adore reading with Reilly’ For more information please see www.petsastherapy.org.

Household Recycling Charges Suspended A recent statement issued by Andrea Leadsom MP, Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, gave the Government’s intention to review its guidance with regard to the charges that can be made at local civic amenity sites and the specific reference to the disposal of DIY materials generated by householders. Following this, and in order to avoid any potential confusion for residents, West Sussex County Council has decided to suspend all charges for DIY type of materials until the review by the Government has been concluded. This means that currently, householders visiting West Sussex amenity sites will no longer be charged for the deposit of material which results from the sort of work householders would normally carry out on their homes – what most people would refer to as DIY waste. Once the Government’s review has been concluded – expected by the end of this year - the County Council will look at the matter again. Keep Billingshurst Frack Free Following a recent public meeting with over 150 people at Pulborough Village Hall, local group Keep Billingshurst Frack Free (KBFF) say that it is clear many more residents are very concerned about the drilling site located at Broadford Bridge, Adversane Lane, West Chiltington. Kimmeridge Oil and Gas (KOGL), a subsidiary of UK Oil and Gas (UKOG), plan to drill the well later this year, and KBFF predict the presence of large trucks, carrying the equipment and chemicals required for extraction, may cause traffic hold-ups, air pollution and noise. Even before the main operation begins. KBFF point out that KOGL/UKOG have undertaken no public consultation since taking over the site from Celtique Energie, in August 2016, despite having new plans, which use more and unknown chemicals deep in the earth. The group says that environmental and health impacts associated with these new proposals are greater and have not been assessed. In addition KBFF say, the Broadford Bridge site is located near a fault, which could mean that any liquids/chemicals could transfer to the public water supply via the River Arun, and that, to be economically viable, oil production would require thousands of wells to be drilled across Sussex. A29 Speeding - Can You Help? A plan has been formulated to join in with Coldwaltham and Watersfield in forming a Community Speedwatch campaign in an effort to monitor and reduce speeding on the A29. This would involve volunteers using police-approved hand-held speed guns at the side of the road. Saturday Coffee Mornings
Mike Billsbury has been running a coffee morning for the last eight years, and the latest one held on 5th March raised £180 for the Village Hall. Sadly Mike has said that he can no longer run the event, so someone is need to take over the organisation. There are various helpers who would probably continue if someone were to take the helm. All proceeds raised go towards buying equipment for the hall, most recently glasses and cutlery.

The original proposed site (see yellow area on map opposite) was for 20 houses, but the new proposed site (coloured orange) could be for 40 houses. The Parish Council have met with the SDNPA to ask the reasons for the change, and have received assurances that a period of consultation will take place in September. Parish Council Meeting 24th April
A member of the public asked if any safety checks were undertaken by the parish council on the rope swings on Hesworth Common and for clarification on who is liable if someone is hurt whilst using one of these swings. There are a number of swings located across the common and it was agreed that they are very popular. No safety checks are carried out by the parish council and no action taken to remove any (swings). A letter will be drafted to the council’s insurers seeking clarification of any cover provided in the event of a claim for injury. The Fittleworth and District Association had written to the council with a suggestion that the council purchases a narrow strip of land along the north side of Upper Street in order to ensure that any possible development on the north of the A283 does not front

Councillors understood the concerns expressed by the Association but it was agreed that it is not the role of the parish council to purchase land for the purpose of guarding against possible future planning scenarios. The council will continue to monitor all applications for development through the production of the Neighbourhood Plan and the consultation process on all planning applications. A request had been received to hold a dog fete event on the recreation ground. It was agreed that further information is required including the proposed date and confirmation that the funds raised will be for charity. The idea of holding car boot sales on the recreation ground had also been suggested. It was agreed that the restrictions on the use of the recreation ground will not allow for this activity. Four planning applications had been approved by the South Downs National Park Authority (SDNPA), including the plans for the proposed Village Shop. Seven applications were awaiting SDNPA decisions, three of which had no objections from Fittleworth Parish Council (FPC); two which had no objections from FPV although were subject to qualifications, and two which FPC registered an objection to, one on aesthetic grounds and the other as not in keeping with the landscape. An application was withdrawn to replace a house, to which FPC had previously objected The next Parish Council meeting will be on Monday 19th June at 7pm. www.fittleworth-pc.org.uk

Fittleworth Shop Community Share Scheme Announced By The Fittleworth Shop Committee. The combined shop and cafĂŠ and playground project will revitalise the very heart of our village. It is a major project and the costs will be significant. Follow us on Facebook for regular updates.
We have set up a Community Benefit Society called Fittleworth Community Shop Limited which will own and run the shop. Parish Council vacancies - two possibly interested individuals had come to attention but unfortunately these did not progress. The notice of casual vacancy will be routinely added to Council agenda from time to time, and the vacancy continues to be advertised. County Councillor Pat Arculus reported on various County matters: Following a query about WSCC grants for pavement improvements, she thought that this grant was spent but would find out whether the funding was to be re-established. Regarding previously discussed possibilities of car parking allocation at the WSCC owned land adjacent to the Corn Store/Swan Corner bridge area, TROs (traffic regulation orders) can be applied for through the County Council's website. It is now understood that a restriction can be put on an area without white line markings for parking

Parish Council News 51 and Cllr Arculus would support an application made. Discussion also took place over possible solutions to the narrow road at Church Hill. Cllr Arculus would provide the Clerk with relevant WSCC website links for proposals for road widening schemes and TROs, for dissemination. Following a query, Cllr Arculus would follow up the delay in WSCC providing some manpower to join parish council volunteers in clearing a footpath of overgrown vegetation. Cllr Arculus clarified some misinformation circulating around the UKOG exploratorydrilling application: WSCC could not take potential traffic issues into consideration for such applications; A further planning application would not be required by UKOG if oil is found. Cllr Tilbrook gave an update of the slow progress of the Neighbourhood Plan. The Steering Group had thought it was in a position to contact land owners for updated information but the District Council has now advised that due to the length of time since the original call for sites, a further call for sites would be prudent.
