Welcome... Moving house and having your first baby can both be fairly taxing experiences. Doing both at the same time can really raise the stress levels. Luckily, in spite the pressure, Cat Sims has retained her sense of humour and you can read her amusing article on page 22. Our recipe this month from reader Beryl Fleming, is a delicious lemon and lime sorbet, ideal for any early Christmas gatherings you may be hosting... There’s more Charity and Community items this month and if you have a story you would like published, please email us at info@sussexlocal.net Also this month, style guru Gay Richardson with a guide to this Autumn/ Winter’s fashion trends - see page 30. As usual, our What’s On guide is packed with local events, with some firework displays too this month to celebrate Bonfire Night. Personally, I love fireworks and really enjoy the whole bonfire night atmosphere. Wrapping up in hats and gloves and “ooohing” and “ahhhing” at the big rockets while the children giggle and jump about when those noisy popping fireworks go off. If there are hotdogs on offer, so much the better!

The first phase of the work has begun which includes the levelling of the outfield. The total project cost will be approximately £64,000. Horsham District Council has also contributed a generous £28,000 to the project. The club was identified by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) as a club of strategic developmental importance and their application was supported by the Sussex Cricket Board. PCC Secretary and Treasurer, Maurice Woolgar said “In recent years the club has made good progress and we field three Saturday league teams, one Sunday friendly side and we have over 80 junior cricketers at the club. SUSSEX LOCAL The Corn Store and Tea Rooms at Swan Corner Pulborough - An Apology In our October 2013 edition we published an article written by Mark Lewis entitled “Turning our back on the river”. Following publication we were contacted by the landlord of The Corn Store who has asked us to clarify the following matters: • The Corn Store is not closing • The Corn Store is not being redeveloped as a residential property. • The shop is not an enterprise of “bric a brac” as was suggested in the article • The Shop and Tea Rooms are in fact two floors of a successful antiques collectables and gifts for homes and gardens retail unit. • The shop does have consistent and reliable opening hours. • The shop has a successful coffee shop and tea room used by passers-by and locals alike and provides a popular ‘destination’ facility for Pulborough • Most produce is home made with sandwiches and snacks made fresh to order • The Corn Store celebrated its 10th Anniversary on the 18th October 2013. We are happy to correct these points and both Sussex Local and Mark Lewis apologise to the landlord, tenants, pitch-holders and customers of the Corn Store for any distress or embarrassment caused by the article.
Record Harvest Fair Sussex Local had a stall at Pulborough’s Harvest Fair in September. The fair beat all previous records with more visitors, more stalls and more events than ever before. New traditional events for children included sack-races and Punch & Judy, also much enjoyed by the parents! The highlight event was a Birds of Prey display run by Sally Buckland. One bird went well out of the field area and out of sight and everybody thought it might have gone to the RSPB for a meal! Happily it returned, to everybody’s delight. Event organiser Rob Aylott said “The dedicated team who made this possible are the real unsung heroes of the day as well as our sponsors who allow us to give to local youth groups any profits – but we always need others to join the team!” Rob can be contacted on 01798 872823 or rob@robaylott.co.uk

Lemon & Lime Sorbet Kindly supplied by reader Beryl Fleming of Findon Valley. Ingredients: 1 lime, 2 lemons. Half pint of water. 3.5 ounces of caster sugar. OPTIONAL.- 1 tablespoon of gin (or other spirit) Chilled mould or individual small trifle dishes – freezerproof if intending to store.
Method: Drop the lime and lemons into hot water for 5 minutes to soften the rind. Then cut their rind into thin strips. Squeeze all the fruit for the juice and retain. Put half pint of water, the juice and 3.5 ozs. of caster sugar in a pan, heat slowly until sugar melts, stirring gently all the time. Add the strips of rind and slowly bring to the boil, then simmer on low
heat for 4 minutes, stirring. Leave to cool (but not until cold) then gradually stir in 1 tablespoon of gin (or other spirit – optional). When cool, put all into a food processor on high speed for several minutes until all the strips have been shredded. Repeat until thoroughly shredded. Pour into moulds as required and put in the fridge (or the freezer if to be kept for another day). Remove from fridge 30 minutes before serving and decorate with washed/chopped mint leaves (optional). To sponsor this recipe for just £25 a month telephone Sussex Local on 01903 868474 or email info@sussexlocal.net The sponsor provides a monthly recipe and gets their logo, contact details and tag line printed on this page.

Two Out Of Three Ain’t Bad What’s the top of “The Most Stressful” list? Cat Sims is sure she knows. As I write this, the editors of this magazine are getting increasingly agitated and they have every right to do so. I’ve had to shut down my email and put my phone on Airplane mode just to avoid the inevitable and deserved hassle they are giving me. Why? Well, I’m two days late with this article already, and honestly? I totally forgot that I had to write it. I didn’t tell them that, obviously (although I realise I just let the cat out of the proverbial bag) but recently life has been a little hectic. Let me tell you why. I’m currently thirty-three weeks pregnant; we are about to exchange on a house; my husband is travelling with work incessantly and I’m writing articles and running a charity until I go into labour. I’d love to write an article about something else,
anything else, but honestly, there is no space left in my tiny, hormone-riddled brain to think of anything (let alone express it eloquently and in fully formed sentences). So forgive me if this reads more like therapy than entertainment. Hopefully, it can be both. I was on the phone to my mother this morning, talking (read: moaning) about the stress myself and my other half are both under. She replied, “I’m not surprised darling. You’re taking on two out of three of the most stressful things you can do at the same time: buying a house and having your first baby.” I asked her what the third thing was. “A family member dying,” she promptly replied. “That’s it,” I said. “You are not allowed to die. And while I’m at it, pass this on to every member of the family (I don’t have the time) – they are not allowed to die either. If you do go and die on me, then I have to warn you, you’re not going to get the recognition you deserve. I’m too busy, I don’t have enough emotional battery power and frankly, I would consider it enormously inconvenient and, if I’m honest, a little bit selfish. Stay fit, eat well and stay away from cliff edges.” Unsurprisingly, the conversation died an uncomfortable death shortly after but my outburst (read: tantrum) made me realise that perhaps the pressure was getting the better of me. My mother isn’t the only one getting the rough end of the pineapple when it comes to my emotional volatility. Just yesterday, my husband saw me crumple into a soggy pile of tears and sobs because I came home to find he had replaced the knobs on the bedside tables without telling me. Our solicitor, who is working her socks off to get us into the house before my waters break, felt the need to call me to check I was ok after I sent her an email seething with sarcasm, anger and general enragement. The checkout girl at Waitrose got very short shrift when she asked me twice if I had a Waitrose card (I said ‘No’ the first time!) and

24 Living the cats are starting to hide under the bed whenever they hear my key in the door. To give me some credit there are a few things at work here. Maternity leave is a distant dream due to my self-employed status and while the rest of my knocked-up buddies are lounging around enjoying maternity leave and chatting about where to get the best pregnancy massage and what a nightmare it is trying to give yourself a pedicure, I’m still working full time. Last week a client called me: “I’m just wondering when you’re going on maternity leave?” “Well, I can’t say exactly, but it’ll be when I go into labour.” “Ha ha ha.” “No. I’m not joking.” “Oh. Ok. Well, how long are you taking off?” “How long does it take to push a baby out?” Silence. On top of that is the fact that we are buying our first house. When I was fifteen years old and daydreaming about what my grown-up life would be like, I never in a million years thought that I would have to wait until I was 32 to buy a house but that is the way it is for me and thousands of other people like me. But after years of hunting down a lender that would give us a mortgage, saving our socks off for a deposit we are, quite literally, on the threshold of our very first home. This should make me ecstatic, elated and relieved and it does. It’s just that, you’ll have to dig deep, deep, deep down through the anxiety and worry to find those emotions. Buying a house has to be at the top of The Most Stressful list. I don’t care what the papers say, everyone is buying a house and it feels like they are all doing it this month. Between the agents, the accepted offers, the gazumping, the contracts, the over-stretched surveyors, the
SUSSEX LOCAL building quotes, the solicitors, the negotiations, the money and everything else in between, it’s a miracle anyone has ever managed to buy a house before. The whole process has taken three months longer than it should have done and if one more person says to me, “It always takes longer than you think it will,” I will cut them, with a blunt spoon. Did I mention I was pregnant? It can’t take longer. I have a very pressing deadline that isn’t negotiable (insert comment from editors here about what on earth I know about deadlines). Having said all that, the light at the end of the tunnel appears to be flickering, faintly but distinctly ahead of me. As I write, I am on a train to see our solicitor to sign the contract on the house. I will still be working but I’ve negotiated a date from which I will be working exclusively from home. My husband is away a lot but it looks like he’ll be home for the birth and so far, everyone in my family has had the decency not to die. The sun is still shining in October and I can tentatively believe that the solicitors will organise exchanging on the deadline I set. Now, I just need to get better at making my own deadlines and everyone will be happy.

Phocas the Gardener Saint Phocas is the patron saint of gardeners. Phocas used to feed the poor and became skilled at growing herbs to aid the sick. Contributed by AJ of GCF Grave Tending services. second half of the month looks likely to be more unsettled with some prolonged and heavy rain possible in our area followed by an, albeit short, cold snap. It is looking as if the gardener should make the most of the early part of the month.
In Season
Often another wet month, November has a habit of giving a little respite mid-month offering a calmer, mild spell, before reverting to the expected autumn/winter pattern. Although weather patterns are usually similar to those of October, the shortening of daylight hours and less strength from the sun's rays results in lower temperatures. Frequent gales and rain can be expected from the west, whilst a southerly airflow will bring fog and mist and the possibility of night frosts. Northerly winds can bring snow, but it will rarely reach our area this early and if it should is unlikely to lay. This year many worldwide influences have dictated our weather and this November will prove no exception – severe hurricanes around the Americas will often have a disruptive effect on the weather this side of the Atlantic and there is currently (as of mid October) a very strong storm threatening to devastate areas of the Indian sub continent. These and other phenomena can have a drastic influence on our weather, making long range forecasting more complicated. That said, it seems reasonably certain that this November will see high pressure dominating weather patterns for the first half of the month, this will result in calm conditions with much mist and fog, a good chance of night frosts and daytime temperatures only being lifted by what warmth the sun can give. There is always the risk of some rain in our area given the presence of low pressure to the south. The
If you wish to buy British, support local producers and try to reduce 'food miles' here are some vegetables in season: Jerusalem artichoke, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, chicory, marrow, parsnip, radish, spinach sweetcorn, beet and swede.
Compost Danger Gardeners are being advised to wear gloves when handling compost and to avoid breathing in the dust as well as washing hands thoroughly afterwards. This is because scientists have discovered that over half the brands of compost tested contained Legionella bacteria which can cause humans to be infected with the often fatal Legionnaires disease. A recent outbreak in Scotland linked to compost, infected six people and some required intensive care in hospital. Following efforts to phase out the use of peat in composts to protect peatlands, increasingly the products sold in the UK are composed of sawdust and bark the traditional content of potting soils in Australia and New Zealand where linked cases of Legionalla are more common. A leading researcher in the study suggested that environmental pressure to end the use of peat in composts could lead to more infections in the future. The risk is apparently higher for the elderly while healthy young people face a low risk.
28 Gardening Tasks for November ROSES: ROSES New bushes should be planted using a mixture of native soil and bonemeal, heel in well and stake standards. LAWNS: LAWNS Make the final cut this month, when conditions permit and apply autumn fertiliser. Good idea to get the mower serviced now. DAHLIAS: DAHLIAS Keep examining stored tubers and soak overnight if they have shrivelled. Any parts that show signs of rot should be cut away and dusted with flowers of sulphur. POOLS & PONDS: PONDS Remove any leaves and protect from future fall with netting. Thin out oxygenating plants.
Tree Safety In East Sussex councils are using thermal imaging cameras to asses how safe a tree is. These cameras help to show whether a tree is diseased, has unsafe branches or could fall. The system works by taking an infra red image of the tree and then examining the heat flow – trees use water as a thermal conductor and insulator to manage heat from the environment and by examining the patterns of heat it can be determined whether a tree is healthy or not - a consistent pattern of heat shows a healthy tree but areas of hot and cold indicate possible problems. The system allows checks to be made in a short time and at an attractive cost.
SUSSEX LOCAL HOUSE PLANTS: Most will thrive if kept in a constant room temperature but move away from cold reflection from windows and do not leave in a room which has a wide range of temperature. Reduce watering to leave top of soil dry and just a little moisture around the root. Allow as much light as possible, supplementing with artificial light if you wish but not too close so that it burns the foliage. GENERAL: GENERAL Lift fuchsias, geraniums and begonias and bring inside. Keep digging empty plots to allow frosts to penetrate. Clear leaves and compost those that are not diseased (which should be burnt – when and where permitted)

Lovely Layering How to keep warm without looking 3 sizes bigger! Gay Richardson’s Autumn/Winter ‘13 fashion favourites. It’s Autumn and time to change around our wardrobes to bring out the warmer clothes. The A/W 2013 trends are in the shops and I have selected my fashion favourites that will make your look up to date while remaining age appropriate. Check Mate – in shops in abundance but do ‘check’ the size of your checks. Smaller like gingham & hounds tooth, suits smaller bodies and larger, windowpane, for those with more ‘space to fill’ The right size checks for you will make you look more ‘body balanced’. Your check could be a shirt, dress, skirt, coat, trousers, a scarf, or bag – just take the ‘square’ route for this trend. Phase Eight dress at House of Fraser £99 Another key trend is Monochrome. “Monomania” carries on from the summer season and is so easy to do. Just wear a black item and a white item! It could be an item of clothing or an accessory - shoes, bag, scarf or a print in black and white. Do add a colour to your outfit – a beautiful winter burgundy berry or palest pink, will lift the neutrals. Evans top £35 Skirts - as there was a national shortage last season they are now in abundance in the shops. There are a variety of styles to suit your body shape and lifestyle – midi for taller ladies, pencil – great for most body shapes, full swing creates a 50’s vibe and a short kilt for the young ones! Look out for velvet or leather for tactile textures. Wear with a chunky knit jumper and shoe boots or riding boots. Pencil skirt from Sage & Onion in Lewes, £48 Pink - the palest petal of icy winter or dusky, pink is such a fabulous colour and will suit most colourings (autumnal colourings be cautious). Partner with soft charcoal grey or black for an instant burst of femininity. Uniglo £19.90 in soft merino wool

34 Charity & Community Gunpowder Plot Poem Many thanks to reader Don Filliston for sending us his take on November 5th. Photo (c)Stephen Walby Under the House of Lords A cellar’s vault affords A chance for plotters to stock their hoards Of gunpowder to kill The King at their will And M.P.’s with intent Join him in the firmament. So, Guy Fawkes, soldier, not one to lose, A militant most keen Was chosen from thirteen With the experience, in all their views, To hide in the cellar, then light the fuse. This plot, most illegal Would kill Lord Monteagle, Who received a note to inveigle Him not to attend; By Tresham was penned. Unsigned, with no names Monteagle took it to James And the fate of the plotters was sealed. On the night of the fourth, The King’s men went forth And at midnight Guy Fawkes made to yield. Then trampled and trussed, before Monarch was kneeled.
Is Your Toddler Eligible For Free Care? Around 20 per cent of twoyear-olds in West Sussex county are now eligible to receive up to 570 hours per year of free education and care with a registered nursery, pre-school or childminder. Around 850 twoyear-olds in the county are already signed up to the scheme, which was introduced early to families who were identified as meeting the criteria. West Sussex County Council’s Family Information Service is now urging people to check if they qualify for the free childcare. Families that are eligible for free school meals will qualify, as will many other children. To find out if you’re eligible for the two-year-old funding, or to find out about nurseries, pre-schools or childminders in your area, contact the Family Information Service on 01243 777807 or email family.info.service@westsussex.gov.ukTo find out if you’re eligible for free school meals visit the County Council website at www.westsussex.gov.uk and search for ‘school meals. Further information on any of this can also be found on the County Council website or by asking at your local Children and Family Centre.
Tortured, he lasted two days; Gave names, in pain half crazed. Yes, in making him talk, they had –‘ ways’. Meanwhile, the plotters rode north, To escape the Royalists’ wrath; But despite all their guile, They were brought back for trial And then they were hung, drawn and quartered! So, but for that letter, Events might have gone better And the plotters’ plans might not have faltered; Then how this island’s story would have altered.
New Christmas Carol For All A new Christmas Carol has been written by a musician from Barnham. Robin Mayhew, who once worked with David Bowie as a sound engineer, decided to write a carol which would be free for everyone to sing, record and perform. “Age Old reason For Joy” carries the message of what makes Christmas special. The website has demo versions, a simple two part score for young choristers and schools, a full SATB score for choirs, the lyric and accompaniment. 36 Charity & Community Transport Minister Speaks Of A27 Upgrade During Storrington Visit
well as funding to improve the Chichester by-pass.
Sussex Local was pleased to have been one of a handful of publications, along with BBC Sussex, to meet Transport Minister Stephen Hammond MP on his recent visit to Storrington. Mr Hammond came to see problems of traffic in the village and discuss the need to tackle congestion on the coastal highway. He was accompanied by our own MP Nick Herbert and Chairman of Horsham District Council, Councillor Philip Circus. Mr Hammond walked through the centre of Storrington and was shown the problems of heavy traffic experienced by local residents. He visited several shops to hear about the poor air quality in the village and the damaging effect of congestion on local businesses.
The Minister pointed out that the A27 was one of only six key 'pinch points' identified by the Government across the country for feasibility studies, evidence that the Government understood the problems associated with the coastal route.
Mr Herbert explained to the Minister that the key cause of heavy traffic in the village was rat-running throughout the South Downs by drivers trying to avoid congestion on the A27. Upgrading the coastal route at Arundel and Worthing was critical not just to relieve congestion there but also to protect the Downland villages. The Minister was clearly aware of these issues, having visited Worthing in February this year to discuss the problems with local businesses. In June the Government announced a feasibility study into A27 upgrades at Worthing and Arundel, as

Mr Hammond said: “Storrington has problems with air quality and traffic, and what I am here to do is to understand how the A27, and what we have announced about the A27, will help.” He said that the Government has committed huge amounts of money up to 2016, in terms of the Highways Agency schemes and ‘pinch point’ schemes. Mr Herbert said: “I am pleased that the Government has announced that they will undertake a formal study into the upgrades of the A27 at Arundel and Worthing, and that is real progress.” Mr Herbert has been calling for an Arundel by-pass since he was elected in 2005. He has urged West Sussex County Council, other local authorities, businesses and the Local Enterprise Partnership to work together to make a concerted case for upgrading the A27.

A plum job Local plumber with personal touch If you have ever suffered a plumbing emergency, you will know how important it is to find an expert who will reach you before a leak turns into a deluge or a minor flood becomes a major disaster. Ady Bullock of A J Plumbing Services in Ashington is a local plumber looking after the local community. He told Sussex Local that he can undertake all plumbing work from a simple garden tap to a full bathroom replacement. He likes to think that his advice and suggestions to try to keep his customer’s costs down, set him apart from larger plumbing firms. Although this is small firm, Ady still has to keep up to date with Gas Safe registration. He explained that this means attending 5 yearly workshops to gain knowledge of new legislation and to pass an exam to enable him to continue to work legally with gas installations and to ensure that clients’ demands are in safe hands. Double glazing became popular in the United States in the 1950s but it was not until the 70s and 80s that soaring energy costs and cheaper materials started to influence the UK market.
Keith Diggins started Rustington Windows in 1982 and the firm continues to supply windows and doors from their factory on the Rustington Trading Estate. Keith told Sussex Local that he has no sales force and that 90% of his customers are recommended. He personally visits all customers for quotes which are entirely free and without obligation and the firm is happy to give free advice about any door or window issue. Keith puts his success down to hard work and commitment plus a policy of keeping his clients informed. Customers can visit the factory to see their windows being made and the firm can supply a range of doors and windows to suit both traditional and modern buildings. 01903 776737 www.rustingtonwindows.co.uk

Back Pain Trouble with your back does not simply produce pain in the back. Often it may cause symptoms in more remote areas such as the buttocks, groin, hips, and legs (sciatica). Problems in the spine and neck can also cause dizziness, headaches, pins and needles and more. Research has shown that problems related to the back may affect over 60% of the UK’s population at some stage in their lives. Around 30,000 people currently consult osteopaths every working day with more than seven million consultations carried out every year (General Osteopathic Council). NICE (the National Institute of Clinical Excellence) guidelines recommend manipulative therapies including osteopathy for the treatment of lower back pain. 5 top tips for back care 1. Keep moving and stretching 2. Take regular exercise 3. Take frequent breaks between repetitive tasks and vary the rhythm 4. Avoid strain when lifting especially when shopping and with small children 5. Seek osteopathic advice earlier rather than later Mention Sussex Local to get £10 off first treatment. 07817 934270 www.nicholascoysh-osteopath.co.uk
