Computer Care
Staying up to date by Alan Stainer
Staying up to date is one of those phrases that has a dual meaning for me. On the one hand it can refer to the fact that technology is constantly changing, so that I have to keep myself up to date with everything that is going on. On the other hand, it refers to the requirement for all of us to make sure that we keep our software up to date. It’s that second explanation that I am going to talk about now. There are two main reasons why we should keep software up to date. The first is that software vendors often add new features and fix bugs, which is nice. It is most definitely not the most important reason though, as the second one is really big. Vendors often release security updates to patch vulnerabilities. That’s a technical way of saying, it helps to keep your computer safe from viruses and hackers. Before you all rush ahead and install every update you come across, remember this very important bit of information. A lot of malware (nasty malicious software) will trick you into doing things by prompting you to install an update. So check that it is genuine software you use before clicking on that OK button. www.alansitsolutions.com

They advise not constructing bonfire piles until the day of the festivities or, if a large bonfire needs to be built in advance, that they are surrounded by chicken wire, secured at an angle so hedgehogs cannot climb, and ask that before lighting, bonfires are checked for any signs of sleeping hogs. Native to the Antipodes, the fungi is believed to have been introduced into Europe in military supplies in 1914, and is characterised by tentacle like arms that eventually reach a length five to ten centimetres and are covered in a brown foulsmelling secretion that attract flies that help to disperse the fungi’s spores. Runners Join Trekkers Challenge
Local charity St Barnabas House’s annual South Downs Trek will be open to runners as well as trekkers for the first time this year. The trek takes place on Saturday 7th October, when participants set off from Devil’s Dyke at 8am on a challenging 21 mile route over the South Downs, taking in views of the Sussex countryside, before finishing at St Barnabas House in Goring-by-Sea. The first person to register for the South Downs Trek Run was Cordelia O’Neill, 34, who now lives in Glasgow but grew up in Steyning where her mum still lives. Cordelia completed the Brighton Half Marathon in February 2017, running in memory of her father, Tom O’Neill, who received end of life care from St Barnabas House in 2016. Registration costs £25 per person, which includes a fundraising pack, transportation to the route start, lunch, refreshments, a souvenir medal, South Downs Trek t-shirt and glass of bubbly at the finish line. Participants are asked to raise a minimum sponsorship of £250, which goes towards fund the specialist palliative care, both at the hospice and in the comfort of patients homes across West Sussex. www.stbh.org.uk/southdownsrun

Recent research has shown that 20 percent of the rubbish currently thrown away in the green-top (household waste) bins could be put into the blue-top recycling bin, and that in total a staggering 57 percent of waste currently throw away could be reduced, reused or recycled. Residents are encouraged to look at HDCs dedicated web pages for tips on how to reduce, reuse or recycle waste in green-top bins and for a useful A-Z list of what can and cannot be recycled in the district. Support for Stalking Victims
Charity Computer Collection
Sussex Police & Crime Commissioner Katy Bourne has awarded £62,500, and Sussex Police has contributed a further £30,000, over the next two years, to community interest company Veritas Justice, who will provide a support service to help victims of stalking across Sussex to cope and recover as well as raising awareness of the risks associated with stalking behaviours.
Local firm RCT Webdesigns is supporting Bognor Regis based charity Yet 2 Learn (Y2L) with a computer collection drive, to support young adults who are having trouble breaking into the job market.
Part of Veritas Justice’s aim is to improve the identification, reporting and prosecution of stalking offences in the area, and to increase confidence and safety for victims so they know they are listened to and believed. The service Veritas Justice will provide will include training for police officers and staff, including call handlers. The latest figures from Sussex Police show a 363 percent increase in reports of stalking between March and July 2017, compared with the same period last year, which Commissioner Bourne believes shows that victims are becoming more confident in reporting and that officers are getting better at recognising the signs of stalking and recording it as such. Contact: Sussex Police – Call 101, or sussex.police.uk/contact-us/report-online. If you’re in immediate danger, always call 999. www.safespacesussex.org.uk

Donated computers are then used by the trainees at YTL to learn IT repair and maintenance skills, as well as essential “Enterprise” training. As well as being essential to training needs, by repurposing older hardware, RCT Webdesigns Ltd, along with YTL are also helping to reduce potential landfill waste. Interview with Russell Hastings plus win tickets! Lynn Smith speaks to Bognor musician Russell Hastings, now a member of ‘From the Jam’ alongside Bruce Foxton.
It’s been a busy year for musician Russell Hastings. Bognor Regis born and bred, Hastings has been touring, alongside The Jam’s Bruce Foxton, with their band From the Jam to celebrate not just one, but two musical anniversaries. In fact Hastings can truly be said to be living the dream, having gone from successful, tribute artist to playing alongside his idols in a career that has taken him all over the world and currently sees him touring to mark the 35th anniversary of the Jam’s final studio album The Gift. Russell Hastings and Bruce Foxton - “From the Jam”
This year has also seen the band embark on the 40th anniversary tour of The Jam’s first studio album In the City – which included a visit to Hong Kong to play at the opening of the Rugby Sevens. But when I speak to Hastings he sounds relaxed, coming over as down to earth, passionate about his music and touring as well as being a veritable font of anecdotes, particularly when it comes to The Jam - the band he’s been a huge fan of since his brother brought home In the City, back in the seventies. Hastings began playing the guitar aged twelve, inspired by the punk explosion. (c) Derek D’Souza
Later he kicked off his musical career in Bognor Regis band Maximum High, and in the nineties was enjoying a successful career playing, amongst other songs, The Who and The Jam covers when he had his “lucky break.” Mike Rutherford, of Genesis, asked him to do backing vocals on a Mike & the Mechanics album and although the album was shelved, the experience led to Russell crossing paths with a number of musical icons, amongst them Ringo Starr and, significantly, The Jam’s Rick Buckler. Rick and Russell became friends and when Rick decided he wanted to get back behind the drums again he asked Russell to join him. They toured as The Gift in 2006, one of their gigs being at Guildford University. Also on the bill was the Casbah Club featuring another member of The Jam, Bruce Foxton. Rick and Russell invited Bruce to join them on a couple of Jam songs, including Smithers Jones and Down in the Tube Station at Midnight; the audience loved seeing

28 Local People two members of The Jam playing together again and Bruce joined The Gift for a few more of their shows. Russell remembers that, “News leaked out, gigs sold out and we attracted lots of press attention.” Following this the three men met in a Surrey pub: “No management, just the three of us,” and decided to work together, with the result that in May 2007 From the Jam was launched. Rick Buckler left the band in 2009, and Mark Brzezicki, (Big Country, the Casbah Club) drummed with them for five years, before fellow Sussex lad Mike Randon took over in 2014.
Original Jam member Bruce Foxton
Hastings describes Bruce Foxton as his best friend and illustrates his down to earth approach to working with his musical idol by describing how sometimes the pair can get out of the car to find a crowd gathering around them and how he’ll wonder “what do these people want?” This neatly echoes a story Russell heard from The Jam’s touring days, when the band were driving past a venue they were due to play in Manchester that evening and, seeing the crowds outside, asked themselves: “Wonder who’s on there tonight?” But best friend or not, surely there must be times when Hastings is on stage – singing and playing the Jam’s back catalogue alongside one of the band’s original members – and he has to pinch himself? The man’s reply is self deprecating. He has, he says “been doing it a long time now – longer than The Jam 3 were actually together – but I never take it for granted. As the shoes got more comfortable to wear my own voice came through.” Hastings does consider himself to be “very, very lucky,” but believes that even stronger than the band are the songs, which he feels, “belong to the public.” And From the Jam does have a fantastic array of material at its fingertips – the huge number of successful Jam songs, including four number one hits, and the critically acclaimed songs cowritten by Foxton and Hastings. This begs the question, how, with such an extensive back catalogue at its disposal does the band decide upon a set list? The Gift tour will cover a lot of tracks from the album - including, Ghosts and The Gift, plus others that please the band and will certainly delight the fans. As well as pleasing fans with Jam classics, From the Jam has produced two albums in the last four years, “Back in the Room” and “Smash the Clock,” both recorded in Paul Weller’s Black Barn Studios. The Jam broke up in 1982, reportedly a less than amica-

ble event, so how does Hastings get on with the man who split The Jam? “Paul is,” Russell says, “nothing but gracious and kind, a sweet and lovely guy.” In fact Weller has played on a couple of the albums tracks, as have other musical icons such as Paul Jones and Wilko Johnson. A live album – the eponymous From the Jam Live – is due for release in December to mark The Gift Tour, which began on 22nd September and ends on 16th December at Brighton’s Concord2.

The Jam was, undeniably, one of the biggest selling bands of its day and pretty much era defining, so who makes up the audience of a From the Jam gig these days? Russell says that the audience is very much a mixed bag, “As well as the hard-core Jam fans, (It’s) great to see 17, 18, 19 year olds in the crowd – the converted,” he laughs, “and they know all of the words.” And what about the sound? The Jam was a threepiece known for a very full sound, and Hastings is emphatic that the band is true to the original sound, “No modern technology, except for in-ear monitors, and I hardly use any foot pedals. Add your beef to the onions, browning the meat all over, you may want to turn the heat up at this point, as you don’t want the meat to boil 3. Simply add your curry sauce and bring to a boil for 10 minutes 4. Reduce the heat to low, stir in the dates and chilli, now simmer away for an hour or longer with the lid on, stirring occasionally. Again, if you need to add water then add a little at a time. 5. The last 20 minutes you will want to reduce the sauce down, so remove the lid and turn the heat up until you have a gorgeous thick sauce Serve with fluffy basmati rice, yogurt and coriander Visit us where you can find all the above ingredients and loads more recipe ideas.

In Your Garden Monthly gardening ideas and tasks by Andrew Staib, Principle Designer of Glorious Gardens Dahlia Magic - The Largest Dahlia Collection in the UK on your doorstep Tucked away just outside Storrington along Fryern Rd is an amazing feat of horticulture -the UK’s largest Dahlia collection. Run by the very passionate couple Phillip Godsmark and Mary-Ann Joyce, they grow literally thousands of Dahlias each year from seeds and tubers. If you pass by in your car, or the local bus (Phillip swears that he has noticed more people sit on the side his farm is on so they can marvel) you will see fields of multi coloured blooms.
Though they grow mainly for cut flowers, each wedding normally requiring up to 300 blooms, Phillip’s real passion is creating new varieties. He bred Ryecroft Jan, a creamy white Pompon, which is currently one of the most popular Dahlia in the the world. “I collect about 5000 seeds each year from the cream of the crop. I then grow the seeds, as well as take cuttings and divide tubers, and trial them for 5 years before I send them out as a new variety as I

want them to be world class. My favourite moment is when I walk down the rows and see what the seeds have grown into. I don't know what the bees have fertilised and cross pollinated so it is a complete surprise that I can’t predict. For every one new Dahlia that I discover I have planted 1000 seeds!”
Which is very true- top designers use Dahlias for their amazing colour variations and heights, especially billowing over from the back of the border. When Summer has peaked these flowers really do hold centre stage and can flower well into October and even November.
“Yes” says Mary Ann “and we have run out of females in the family to name them after. That one there is called Sam Sunset named after our little dog who died when still young. Jan was named after Phil’s late sister.”
Though they still exhibit at The National Dahlia Show at Wisley each year unfortunately for Phil and MaryAnn, discovering and growing on new discoveries is not very profitable. After a year, their ownership of the variety ends and then anyone can make a cutting a sell the variety on.
Phillip first came across Dahlias when he a boy. “Like everyone else in the 1960’s, my father grew them. I still love their variation of size and colour and shape. There is no flower like them. A local nursery used to exhibit them. They went out of fashion in the 80’s but they are back now.”
“Every year we say we are going to give up but it’s difficult. People come for miles for them. Recently 4 Australians got off at Gatwick and came straight here. We grow and test Dahlia varieties sent to us from all around the world”. But it is back breaking work. Every October, before the cold and damp set in, they dig up over 8000 tubers by hand, clean off the mud, label and store them in dry boxes under cover. “Because they originated from Mexico they don’t like wet feet and can only last a couple of days before they begin to rot. Even though we have good sandy soils here we sometimes have to hand wash and dry them.”
38 Gardening On the 10th April each year they plant them all back again along with the new seedings that carry the hope of discovering even more new varieties. “ I developed the first scented Dahlia in the world by crossing two that had a mild scent.” Along side personal injuries and thefts from their farm it is hard work to keep such a big plot of land going as they also grow vegetables, Zinnias and Gladioli and sell direct from their farm shop to the public. But they are still there! So if it is a warm Autumn you may still have a chance to see and buy some of the most beautiful Dahlias grown anywhere in the worldand some vegetables too!
Places to visit Obviously visit Phil and Mary- Ann’s lovely Farm shop! Also have you visited Borde Hill with its magnificent garden near Haywards Heath? It is well know for its Autumn colour display and has 80 ‘champion’ trees’ which are either the tallest or have the largest girth of their kind in England. You may even get to see the last of the Summer Roses in its large Rose Garden. It is open from 10am to 6pm (or dusk whichever is earliest).

SUSSEX LOCAL What to do in October Now is the time to move plants around the garden or plant up new ones. The soil is still warm for the roots to establish but there is less chance of the plants drying out. You can divide most Perennials now including Rhubarb and balance up your garden by taking the one half to a different place. You can still plant lettuce and can start sowing Chinese winter greens and Spring Cabbage. Repairing your lawn can start now with the cooler weather, either using pre grown turfs or seeding into prepared earth. Your lawn treatment can start this month with aerating the garden with a strong fork and raking out moss and thatch. Lastly you can cut back shrubs like Buddlea and Lavatera to about half their height to neaten them up and prevent strong winter winds rocking them about- the more fundamental pruning happens in Spring

Fittleworth School
Starting School - Parents may worry more then the children! The first week in September saw twenty-two, four-year-olds start school for the first time. There was much excitement and nerves at the school gate and that wasn’t just the children! As a parent and a School Governor, I have first-hand experience of the anxiety that goes hand in hand with your child’s first day at school - we worry about whether our little ones will be able to cope with all the aspects of school life and make friends easily. Interestingly, The Professional Association for Childcare and Early Years (PACEY) research found that over two thirds of parents felt anxious about their children starting school, half believing they were more anxious than their child. They also found that parents wanted more advice on how to support their child starting school.
SUSSEX LOCAL As a School Governor, I realise the importance of developing a strong collaboration between Early Years providers to support the children (and parents!) with the transition to School. At Fittleworth C.E Village School we are very fortunate to have an excellent Early Years provider adjacent to the School building. Fittleworth Playgroup & Baby Room work closely with the School Reception Class all year round to ensure that the children have the best possible start to their primary school journey and reception class teachers visit the homes of all new children and/or make contact with other Early Years settings. Lindsay de Grouchy, Parent Governor
Cutting the cloth accordingly After the long summer holiday and disappointing weather, there will be a very warm welcome for every member of our school community as we return for the new school year. Financially times are tough with very tight budgets but we are fortunate in having a very experienced staff to help us keep our heads above water while making the most of what we have. Being frugal is an excellent virtue for all of our children to be taught and makes them realise that being kind, loving & supportive to their fellow students is far more important than demanding new phones, tablets & the latest gadgets from their parents & carers! A good hair day Give your tresses a treat! The art of hairdressing dates back thousands of years with much ancient art depicting people attending to another's hair. The works of the Greek writers, Homer and Aristophanes contain references to hairdressing and in some African cultures a belief existed that a person's spirit was present in his or her hair. During the 18th Century, particularly in France, Marie Antoinette generated great interest in the magnificent creations of her hairdressers who adorned her "poufs" with all manner of decorations including fruit, jewellery, feathers and birds. In the sixties, the "beehive "mimicked this style to a certain degree with long hair (often viciously back-combed) piled high in elaborate The Blush team left to right: Peta, Kate, Emma, Sharon & George buns and chignons. If your preference is for something that is slightly less outrĂŠ, a visit to the hairdresser is probably something that occurs on a fairly regular basis. A new salon has recently opened in Storrington and we spoke to the owners Georgina and Sharon about their plans for Sharon (L) and George (R) with previous its future. The salon owner Michael salon has in fact been in existence for 40 years and was known as HBM Hair Design, (formerly Hair By Michael). George and Sharon took over in June this year when the previous owner retired and Blush Hair Boutique was born. George has been hairdressing for 14 years and has built up a loyal core of clients. She told Sussex Local that the new venture is very exciting and that she is delighted to be hairdressing again and looks forward to looking after her clients and styling their hair so that they leave the salon looking and feeling great. . She is keen to promote a professional approach to hair care with the emphasis on healthy hair and attention to individual needs. It is important, she believes, to suit a hairstyle to face shape, lifestyle and natural hair texture.
Sharon is already a presence in the High Street having established Body and Face in 2007. She too is excited about the new venture and enthused about the rest of the team at Blush; Peta who has been a stylist at HBM for 40 years and has a large client base, Emma who joined 10 years ago and specialises in hair extensions and loves a styling challenge and finally newcomer Kate who is keenly anticipating new clients. The salon will offer all aspects of hair care for men, women and children, including cutting, styling, shampooing, perming and colouring. Specialist treatments are available for bridal and important occasions. Individual treatments can be arranged for particular hair types to promote health, condition and shine. A range of hair products, including Paul Mitchell, GHD, MUK and Kerasilk will be available in the salon. Both George and Sharon hope that their customers, old and new will find the salon welcoming and relaxing and will leave, confident that their hair has been styled to reflect their individual characteristics. It is believed that on average 3 hours a week is spent on washing, drying, and generally tending to our hair which equates to 6 days every year! A woman’s hair, it is said, is her crowning glory. Certainly over the years hair styles have reflected times of prosperity and austerity and have had a major influence on fashion. Surely a visit to a good hair salon whether for a big change or to make a hair style more manageable is a worthwhile investment. Energy Savings By Chris Ennis FRICS Yes, it’s that time of year again …. Chilly nights, rising fuel bills and it won’t be long before I get the first phone calls concerning dampness! Many energy providers have announced price rises, and it is now estimated that the average ‘dual fuel’ standard tariff will rise by more than 7% from this September. Now is the time to take steps to freeze your energy bills. Until recently I had not changed my energy provider for several years, I was concerned that the effort involved was onerous, I had the fear of disruption to supplies. The time came when I was switched to a dearer ‘standard variable tariff’, and I made my move. It was very straight forward and I estimate my cost savings to be about £200.00 per year. There are many price comparison web sites where one can find better energy deals including Uswitch, go compare, money supermarket and others. In my efforts to reduce fuel costs I arranged for a smart meter to be installed…..Its a very simple procedure and the actual installation only took a couple of hours and was entirely painless. I can now quantify energy usage in real time….and it does concentrate the mind!

SUSSEX LOCAL Boilers should be maintained on an annual basis both for safety and efficiency. Expect to pay about £100.00 excluding parts for this service. Upgrade the central heating system with thermostatically controlled radiator valves and while you are in the mindset, investigate the costs of replacing an older boiler with a more modern and efficient condensing unit………… likely cost about £2000.00. Energy efficiency is of paramount importance. Ensure that roof insulation is adequate (a minimum of 10 inches of fibre glass or the equivalent) should be laid over or between the ceiling joists. Insulate the upper surface of the loft access hatch. Insulate and cover water tanks, insulate plumbing within the roof, consider the installation of cavity wall insulation, replace any single glazed windows with double glazing. An energy performance certificate (EPC) prepared by a trained inspector will cost in the order of £80.00 and will advise on the actual energy usage, and potential energy savings. Bury News Parish Council Meeting 31st July
A29 - Meeting with Highways Agency A meeting was held at the Village Hall with Chris Dye of the Highways Agency (HA) on Wednesday 26 July, There are two separate issues, the speeding vehicles, and the noise (which is Antisocial behaviour). The main intention was to discuss the application for a grant towards a pelican crossing of the A29 for the children at Bury School. Highways have had several cuts to their budgets over several years, and Mr Dye wished to try to limit expectations. When on site he advised that despite a crossing being within an area of good visibility, the current, and most usable crossing, is too near junctions to install one. There are a set of regulations that he will forward to the clerk. The Neighbourhood Watch Scheme was initialised, but then it was established that it would not cover 50 mph speed limits. A further scheme against the speeding was discussed that reports through Operation Crackdown. A small hand held device could be used, but one person felt that this would open Bury Parish Council (BPC) up to liability should an incident occur. Regarding the illegal silencers, Mr Dye said that that this was a police matter, not Highways. The school crossing is the most important matter, New fabrics from Fryetts, Voyage, Ashley Wilde & Wemyss
Wilton Royal Charter Supreme 60oz, 80% wool twist £29.99 reduced to £26.45 sq. metre
and the WSCC Safer Routes to School team should be involved with both BPC and the school. It was agreed to progress all matters, and to write to Police Commissioner Katie Bourne regarding the policing of Bury Hill and the noise nuisance. Parish Council Vacancies Two positions have been vacated on the Council. This has been advertised on the notice board. There has been no interest, so the Parish Council are able to coopt new members if considered necessary. Planning Updates Highfield Appeal –refused – further work appears to be continuing and the matter referred to enforcement. Hadworth – The new application has been scrutinised by CDC after a previous refusal. BPC have no objection to these new plans. Carringdales – Graffiti – despite the owner confirming that the film company would be making good, the graffiti is still there. The clerk to follow this up. Hollow Farm – After their planning application for a swimming pool was refused, the owners went to appeal, and this was also refused. Prattendens Farm (now The Farmhouse) – this is a new application for consideration. The clerk to circulate the plans once they arrive. www.buryparishcouncil.org.uk

Coldwaltham News Planning Meeting 4th August
Lodge Hill Centre - Planning Application reference SDNP/17/03341/FUL Proposed erection of front and rear ground floor orangery extensions, erection of 2x elevated timber and steel platforms. The plans were presented to the meeting. The meeting considered the plans for the proposed orangery extensions and elevated platforms. It was noted that the purpose of the scheme was to give greater flexibility in the scheduling of school groups staying at the Centre, rather than to increase overall numbers. Despite the elevated position of the Centre it was accepted that visual intrusion should be minimal as the new construction would be at ground floor level. From its prominent position, the Centre had however been a significant source of light pollution, and the proposed measures to avoid light spill from the extensions would need to be fully implemented and maintained. It was resolved to raise no objection to the South Downs National Park Planning Authority regarding the plans, but to emphasise the need for effective implementation of the planned measures to avoid light spill so as to protect the Parish's dark skies. A Declaration of Interest had been received by Cllr G
Nelson as a trustee for Lodge Hill, so he did not attend the meeting.
Reader Letter
Dear Editor, The Editor is quite right to report, as he did in the August edition of Sussex Local, that there are no issues between Sandham Hall and Sussex Local - and never have been. The historical disagreements, which I understand have never been satisfactorily resolved, lie between the Parish Council and Sussex Local over the publication of articles and the price to be paid for access and information from the publicly funded Parish Council website. I believe, but have never been able to convince the Parish Council, that newsworthy items in the public domain should be “freely available without cost to all those interested within and outside the village." Chris Hilton Chairman, Sandham Hall. by Email Editor’s note We concur with Mr Hilton’s summary but really hope we can put this to bed now. As far as we are concerned there is nothing to resolve, and we hope we are providing a useful service to both the Parish Council and residents of Coldlwaltham by publishing this monthly column. We are also always happy to hear from residents with news, so please do contact us. www.coldwalthampc.org.uk

Extract from Parish Council meeting 17th July 2017. A request had been received that the small football goal posts be left out on the recreation ground. Due to the damage caused to posts in the past when they had been left out it would not be possible to agree to this request. Comments had been received about the amount of litter in the car park and lay by adjacent to Hesworth Common. The parish council will provide a bin in the car park and empty it as and when required. There are now not sufficient parking spaces on Greatpin Croft and some people are having to park on School Lane. It may be feasible to provide additional spaces by using part of a grassed area and realigning the current spaces. A site meeting will be held to clarify the proposed scheme and then forward details to Hyde Housing Association. The council had send a note to West Sussex County Council asking for information on when they will be cutting the vegetation on footpaths. No response had been received. The Parish Council will ask Grasstex to give a quote for clearing the path between The Fleet and Churchwood. The Community Shop share offer was launched on 26th June. 82 households have responded raising just over £13,000. The minimum amount required is £15,000 with £25,000 being the target. Conversa-
Parish Council News 51 tions with a number of individuals who have indicated that they wish to make a donation are running in tandem with the share offer. The Charity Commission have now provided the formal scheme for the leasing of the land. Discussions have taken place with the Tree Officer regarding the siting of the replacement for the lime tree which is to be felled. MA raised a concern about the proposal to provide a pedestrian gate between the shop and School Lane. His concerns were noted and will be considered further by the shop management group. Councillors have researched and consulted on provision of new equipment for the new playground, and had shortlisted three companies. The process had involved market research, visiting playgrounds in the surrounding area, consultation with parents and children and obtaining references. It was agreed that Handmade Places be the preferred supplier, subject to the funds being raised. The amount required for equipment was £96,233.14, and the groundworks approximately £30,000. It is hoped that the existing equipment will be used by the school, playgroup and other local groups when it is removed. The council’s insurer has advised that cover is not available for swing ropes at Hesworth Common and they must be removed. Any found at the time of the three monthly health and safety inspection will be removed. www.fittleworth-pc.org.uk

Pulborough Parish Council Preserving Pulborough Station
A meeting was held at Pulborough Railway Station on 25th July between Rowena Tyler, Sussex Community Rail Partnership and two Pulborough Parish councillors. The object was to discuss the station and how the parish council and wider community could help to improve the building, the environs to make it more welcoming, and encourage more travel by rail to Pulborough. Points which were noted in the annex to the Planning and Services Committee meeting on 7th September: 1. Pulborough Community Partnership and Rob Aylott are already either working with Southern and Network Rail, or in discussion on a number of projects, such as: - The map in the bookings hall, designed by Rob in 2010, and about to be refreshed; - The possibility of adopting the signal box, for use as a heritage asset. - The series of walks leaflets, currently available in the bookings hall. - The possibility of working with RSPB and SDNPA to highlight the ‘cinder path’ route to the village and Pulborough Brooks. 2. Network Rail own all the building stock and land, but some of it is leased to Southern, who are then
SUSSEX LOCAL responsible for its upkeep. Depending on which area(s) the parish council is interested in seeing improvements, either Southern, Network Rail or both would have to be consulted. If an application is made to get the building listed, it may or may not be accepted. The criteria for eligibility is quite stringent. Moreover, there is usually only one opportunity to apply, and if rejected, further applications will not be accepted, unless some new and substantial evidence can be produced. The signal box has been listed. 3. Much of the building, especially the decorative features such as guttering, brickwork, façade is in a poor state, and when it has been repaired, it does not seem to be done in a way which is sympathetic to the original design. The parish council is keen to address this, and to ensure that the features are not removed for the sake of economy. The same applies to additional features such as the shelters, which are not in keeping. 4. There are a number of ways in which the parish council and Southern could work together to enhance the area, and this will need research, discussion and agreement by all parties. An action plan was agreed and tasks distributed. Full details at www.pulboroughparishcouncil.gov.uk

West Chiltington Parish Council News for the community A27 Arundel Bypass Consultation – ends 16th October It has been confirmed in a study that some traffic chooses to use A283 through Storrington to avoid the bottleneck at Arundel. Queues through Storrington have a knock-on effect to make some people use West Chiltington as a rat-run. Three options have been put forward in the Highways England consultation and with ‘Option 5A’ it has been suggested there may be a decrease in traffic through Storrington of as much as 33%. To comment on the plans to improve the traffic on the A27 at Arundel. www.highwaysengland.citizenspace.com A Plea from Horsham District Council Please help to recycle more - we need to reach the national recycling target of 50% by 2020. Here in the Horsham District we currently recycle 44% of our waste. We are proud to say that this is highest in West Sussex. However we need to reach the national recycling target of 50% by 2020. Recent research has shown that 20% of what we currently throw away in our green-top (household waste) bins can be put into our blue-top recycling bin. In total a staggering 57% of the waste that we currently throw away can be reduced, reused or recycled! Take a look at Horsham
District Council’s dedicated webpages for tips on how to reduce, reuse or recycle the waste in your green-top bin. This includes a useful A-Z list of what can and can’t currently be recycled here in the District. Take-Aways on Wednesdays and Fridays The Pizza Oven van sells wood fired pizzas and is now to be found at West Chiltington Recreation Ground car park on Wednesday evenings 5-8pm. Each Friday during the winter from 3rd November 5pm – 8pm look out for a Fish and Chips van at the Recreation Ground. Both of these businesses are on the basis of a trial period for 3 months and we hope they will be welcomed and well supported by residents. Do you have some spare time? Do you have knowledge and skills you could put to good use for your community? We would welcome you to our friendly and enthusiastic team of volunteer Parish Councillors.
