10 Charity & Community

Charity & Community Hulky Bear Column Hello from your favourite out and about reporter at the Sidlesham Cat and Rabbit Rescue Centre, Hulky Bear. My staff are so busy right now, replying to emails, making phone calls and booking people in to meet their chosen animals (as well as looking after all the animals of course). Recently at the centre we held our photography contest for the second year running and it was just as successful as the first. Although we were not able to have it judged at our summer fayre like last year, we still got our president Susan Jameson and her husband James Bolan to judge it from home. Obviously I would have won it if someone had entered a photo of me but I’m just so good looking that they didn’t let me enter, so instead I helped to choose the final 18 that was sent to Susan. Our lovely supporters helped us to raise an amazing £448 for the centre. The winner will be receiving an amazing drawing of their photo by Penny Kirk Pet Portraits. If you would like to see the winner, the finalists and to

see what Susan Jameson thought of each photo please do check out our website www.crrc.co.uk/ photography-contest-results. Thank you so much everyone for getting involved with us again. Love, Hulky. www.crrc.co.uk

Homlessness in Chichester The next stage of a project to increase the amount of much-needed short stay accommodation for people facing homelessness in the Chichester District has reached another important milestone. Councillors have reviewed the project proposals to redevelop one of its properties, which will provide an additional 17 flats for people who are homeless and have given the go ahead to proceed to the next stage. It is anticipated that work will start on the site this year. Once completed, the property will complement the existing accommodation managed by the council’s accommodation team. Councillor Alan Sutton, Cabinet Member for Housing, Communications, Licensing and Events at Chichester District Council said, “As a result of the coronavirus crisis, the demand for temporary accommodation has been even greater, making this project even more important. The initiative will mean that we can provide many more short stay homes for people who need this support, and at the same time maximise the space in our existing temporary accommodation. We are committed to reducing homelessness in the district, and this is one of a number of initiatives we have introduced to tackle the issue. He continued, “The council has dedicated outreach workers who provide much-needed support and guidance to help rough sleepers rebuild their lives. This year, we also secured more than £250,000 in Government funding towards supporting rough sleepers in our district. £230,000 of this was used to enhance local services, including: additional outreach staff, a dual diagnosis worker, and the extension of the opening hours of Stonepillow’s day centre hub from five to seven days a week. A further £23,000 was received to help provide short-term accommodation for rough sleepers during the current pandemic. We’re lucky to have such incredible homelessness charities in our area, particularly during the current crisis, and we work closely with them to support those who are rough sleeping.”

30 Motoring

Motoring News from across the industry The dangers of In-Car Tech A review to look at ways of reducing road casualties and deaths is assessing how in-car technology could be increasing accident risks. A recent survey carried out by Venson Automotive Solutions shows that while only 13% of motorists admit to being side-tracked themselves by in-car technology when driving, 68% said they had noticed an increase in other drivers being distracted by dashboard controls or using their mobile phones. Mini Electric milestone Mini Plant Oxford has hit a significant milestone by building more than 11,000 Mini Electrics since production began. Premiered in July 2019, during the brand’s 60th anniversary year, Mini’s first all-electric model is fully integrated into the production process at Oxford.

The Mini Electric production can be adjusted according to global demand. The Benefits Of Quieter Reversing Alarms Reversing incidents injure or kill thousands with more than half hit by HGVs. Emily Hardy, a vehicle safety expert at Brigade Electronics, explains how the company worked to solve this issue. She said: “Research has shown that pedestrians had become so used to the sound of traditional tonal ‘beep beep’ alarms that they weren’t hearing them. We worked to create an alternative in the form of ‘white sound’.” Using broadband technology, the alarm called bbs-tek® White Sound® emits a ‘ssh-ssh’ sound, similar to breaking waves, that is highly directional, gentler on the ear and easier for pedestrians to pinpoint.

42 Local Council

Chichester City Council New homes bonus allocations A special meeting of the Council was held on 8th July to discuss the allocation of the new homes bonus. The allocation for 2020 was £49,549.64, and the applications submitted totalled £68,006.02. Members considered the applications and considered them all to be worthy of support, and allocated as follows: Chichester Community Development Trust Havenstoke Park Pavilion. Mind Body Wellness Furniture –equipment £5,000.00 St Paul’s Church Kitchen. Installation and equipment £15,000.00 Cycling Without Age. Purchase of Triobike and 1st year’s Insurance. £7,965.13 The Council House Portico. Design, Planning and Building Regulations application for glazing the portico £6,000.00 The Council House. Emergency roofing works £15,584.51 Friends of Centurion Way. Sculpture repairs to the archway. After some discussion on this application, members were supportive of the restoration of the sculpture but at this early

stage thought that more clarification was needed and perhaps this would be better suited to another form of funding. It was noted that the applicants were seeking support for the sculpture to be a project carried out by the BBC’s television programme ‘The Repair Shop’. It was suggested that a Discretionary Grant could be applied for. The Deputy Town Clerk advised that this could be a Public Realm project and that the applicants could consider these options, if necessary, once the result of their approach to ‘The Repair Shop’ was known. The New Homes Bonus applications supported by the City Council in the sum of £49,549.64 would be firmed-up and with guidance from City Council Officers, would ensure all applications submitted are complete with the required information. Applications would be submitted to Chichester District Council by Friday 31 July 2020. www.chichestercity.gov.uk
