Apr 2022 Cover image: Kevin McCloud MBE at 'Goodwoof'
HELLO! Easter is just around the corner (as are the school holidays) and there are plenty of events listed in our What’s On guide for both adults and children. 22nd April is Earth Day which has been given added emphasis by recent events and media attention on climate change. The organisers are providing lots of information and free resources for anyone who wants to get involved www.earthday.org Our Charity profile this month spotlights Sightsavers, a Sussex company helping people all around the world. Bathrooms are the most popular room to renovate at the moment according to RMR architects and Heather Smith suggests how to optimise your fitness regime to suit your age. We have our regular local community and council news updates and there’s a chance to win tickets to the forthcoming ‘Goodwoof’ event at Goodwood - dog lovers do not want to miss this! Whether you celebrate Easter or just enjoy the chocolate, we hope you and your family get to spend some time together. Until next time,
Kris & Jeff

Sussex Snippets News from across the counties West Sussex County Council have set their budget for the forthcoming tax year 2022/3. Council tax will rise by 2.99%. This includes a 1.99% general increase, plus an additional 1% dedicated for adult social care. West Sussex Wellbeing has helped more than 60,000 adults since it was established countywide in 2011. The service is delivered through partnership between West Sussex County Council and the seven district and borough councils. It offers impartial and friendly advice and support about health issues. Full details can be found on the website, which also contains details of local Wellbeing Hubs in Adur & Worthing, Arun, Chichester, Crawley, Horsham and Mid Sussex. www.westsussexwellbeing.org.uk Since 2002, the Sussex Search & Rescue charity has helped find numerous missing people across the county. Most callouts are to search for vulnerable missing people such as the elderly, people living with dementia, despondents, children, and anyone else deemed to be a high risk. The team’s
task is to locate them having been given a briefing by the police, and to return them to a place of safety. The team, which entirely consists of volunteers drawn from all walks of life, marks its 20th year of operation in 2022. www.sussar.org.uk. The public consultation into the proposed Rampion 2 wind farm off the coast of Sussex is open until April 11th. Campaign group Protect Coastal Sussex (www.protectcoastalsussex.org) say the new turbines (in purple on the map) will be more than twice the height of Rampion 1 (shown in blue) and cover four times the area. www.rampion2.com/consultation. Children and young people with special educational needs or disabilities are being encouraged to sign up to a new-look register that will help West Sussex County Council develop better services to support them and their families. From 1 April 2022, the West Sussex Library Service will take over running the disability register for those aged under 25. Those who sign up or renew from that date will be entitled to either a £5 shopping voucher or a Max Card, a national discount card providing hundreds of offers and valid for two years. 212 Charity & Community
Charity & Community News Storrington Conservation News The planned visit to Hurston Warren for 5th March was brought forward to Thursday 3rd. The work there involved restoration of the SSSI by removing invasive saplings. The change of the work programme was to enable the planting of native trees and shrubs on Saturday 5th March at Dyke Farm, all part the rewilding scheme there, which had been delayed by bad weather. Good progress was made. On Saturday 26th February we welcomed Dr Tony Whitehead as guest speaker at our Talk and Tea afternoon. It was a well attended occasion, the illustrated talk by Tony was both informative and entertaining. We next meet on 2nd April at 10.00am at the Leisure Centre Car Park. The plan is to clear litter and other rubbish along popular paths and verges in the village. Mundane work, but important for the enjoyment of our neighbourhood. It will not be all work, a coffee break is included. Join us if you can. For information about this and our other activities, or on becoming a member, (no subscription
is required, donations welcome) please get in touch with Chairman Mick Denness on 01903 745971. www.storringtonconservation.org.uk.
Greening Steyning News There's lots happening over the next month, with the Repair Café, Home Energy Helpdesk, Climate Café, Music Quiz and next Green Books talk all in the calendar. Looking further ahead, plans for the Steyning Festival "Green Day" are taking shape. If you're into vegetable growing, bluebells and scones, there's a few spaces available for the wonderful Year on the Farm Course at Daylands Farm. There's news on the recycling front. Since you can now take them to the Co-op, we're no longer collecting crisp packets and similar flexible snack wrappers at the Farmers Market. But we are keen to recruit some more volunteers to help with the sorting. And finally, we are on the lookout for a few up-cycling enthusiasts to help with a Sustainable Fashion Show at Steyning Grammar in the summer. www.greeningsteyning.org
No Coverage of Robbery? Dear Editor. As a resident of Storrington, I received my copy of the March issue of Sussex Local and was extremely annoyed that the recent serious robbery of £100 from a elderly lady in the village received no mention. I think it's essential that local people are warned to be aware that there are known thieves targetting vulnerable people in this area and be extra vigilant. The story was covered in local papers and other media but these are not seen by all residents and your magazine is the ideal way of giving important information. (name and email supplied) Editor’s note: I am sorry you felt we had let you down but we can only publish what we are made aware of - we don’t have full time reporters covering crime news. We have mentioned this to the Wardens who supply us with a monthly article, as maybe they may want to include this kind of news in future.
District Council By-Election A by-election for a District Councillor for Storrington and Washington will be held on Thursday April 7th. Details of candidates can be found by searching for “elections” at www.horsham.gov.uk.

214 Charity & Community
Charity & Community News New Lodge Hill Telescope The ambition of the Lodge Hill outdoor Activity Centre for schools and young people to introduce night sky star gazing to the Centre’s activities programme owes much to its hilltop location near Pulborough in the South Downs National Park, designated as an International Dark Sky Reserve. When the Storrington & Pulborough District Rotary Club learnt of Lodge Hill’s ambition the Club agreed to finance £3,000 to purchase an on-site telescope. This came largely from its own charitable funds, topped up by contributions from Rotary clubs in Arundel, Billingshurst and Chichester Priory - plus a grant from the Rotary South District to which these clubs belong. With guidance from Dan Oakley, who leads the Dark Skies team at the South Downs National Park, as well as involvement from the Chichester Planetarium, a Celestion CPC Delux 800 telescope was selected. This model not only has excellent optics to enable easy viewing of celestial bodies but is also one with a "go to" design, containing navigational software compatible with those optics. This is a great help for beginners as
it quickly helps them find and track objects they would not otherwise see. Pictured inspecting the new telescope are Sir Brian Barttelot (President of Lodge Hill Trust), Dan Oakley, who leads the Dark Skies team at the South Downs National Park and Paul Weaver (Storrington & Pulborough District Rotary Club).

In Your Garden Monthly gardening ideas & tasks by Andrew Staib of Glorious Gardens High Beeches - An unsung Sussex Jewel When I left Sarah and Jeremy Bray, owners of The High Beeches Woodland and Watergardens, I had the feeling I was waving goodbye to two “Ents”, trees from Lord of the Rings that can talk and move about. Such is their dedication to the spirit of the land they inherited from Sarah’s parents in the early 90’s. They showed me around the grounds and their enthusiasm was childlike and fresh. Given that Sarah has spent most of her life here, its impressive her intense enthusiasm for High Beeches hasn’t waned. “My parents, Anne and Edward Boscawen, met Colonel Giles Loder family in the 60’s, and in 1966, when he died, various parts of the estate were sold off, my parents buying High Beeches. It came without a house, but Owners Sarah and Jeremy Bray instead had a magnificent collection of trees that Colonel Loder had built up in the first half of the 20th Century. Among Col Loder’s cousins with whom he exchanged plants, were Lord Wakehurst of Wakehurst Place and Edmund Loder of Leonardslee. She pointed to a grassy bank “Look, Narcissus cyclamineus is out all ready! Oh I do hope late frosts won’t get the Magnolia flowers this year.” “When we came back here, and my parents moved to the Garden House, we immediately started sourcing and adding to the collection. And then a year after our official opening to the public, the 1987 storms hit us!”. They both shudder and recount stories of buying chain saws, gathering vast piles of fallen timber, remembering the loss of great trees. My mother’s force of will got us through that time. She was so dedicated to this place.” As we walk past a small valley, that smooths its way through a grove of trees, Jeremy talks about the unexpected benefits of lockdown. “I have commuted into London most of my working life, but lockdown enabled me to slow down and even start to learn the names of our collections here. We have ambitions to create a proper database of our whole collection.”

We walk along a series of streams, miniature waterfalls and ponds. “Yes”, says Sarah, looking over a particular large and deep pond, “ This water is, as so often, the Spirit of the Place. This was my father’s life work and now ours. We run the place on a shoestring and I wish I had more time for propagating rare species and hunting in nurseries for rare plants” She takes me through the inventory of High Beeches. “ We have some giant oaks of course, though the beech trees have now mostly disappeared over the years. A perfect place to relax By Nick Roberts RMR Group Second only to kitchens, a recent survey revealed that bathrooms were one of the most popular rooms for homeowners to renovate. Why? A few reasons. Sometimes it’s to add a personal touch to a new home, for some it’s because their bathroom has deteriorated into a state and for others it’s simply because they’ve been inspired by a design they’ve seen. Regardless of your motivation, there’s always a design that suits both you and your home. Creating amazing spaces that relax the soul is all about making the most of the size and shape of the room. Whilst some can be restrictive, you’d be amazed at how much just a few alterations can transform your bathroom from a cold and dingy cave into an escape suitable for a spar. And the best news: size doesn’t matter (luckily!). Size doesn’t have to impact style. Yes, whilst we can’t all have a free-standing bath in the centre of the room, clever use of light, materials and mirrors can produce results often way more impressive that originally thought. Styles ranging
from traditional to contemporary, these vibes come from the design and don’t need grandiose elbow room for drying your hair. Short on space? Floating vanity units or possibly built-in storage could make the difference between a cramped bathroom and a modest bathroom. Maybe you’re after a vibrant feel. Feature walls, vintage patterned tiles are proving extremely popular at the moment as they can bring bathrooms walls back to life. For those of you who aren’t exactly sure, wooden effect or large neutral coloured wall tiles are often the best places to start getting your creative thoughts flowing. For those of your seeking a little touch of luxury, perhaps consider a free-standing bath or frameless shower. www.robertsmillerredshaw.com

Sightsavers … Sussex charity improving lives since 1950. By Lynn Smith Worldwide there are some 2.2billion people suffering with visual impairment, but, says Sussex based charity Sightsavers, nearly half of this impairment is preventable or treatable. Sightsavers works in over 30 of the world’s poorest countries where limited health systems and significant challenges accessing treatment leave millions with sight problems. Blindness can prevent people already living below the poverty line from earning a living, drawing their family into a spiral of greater poverty. Ella Pierce, Director of Fundraising and Marketing at Sightsavers, tells me that, “We work to prevent people from unneces- Archana, a cataract beneficiary being screened at a local sarily losing their sight, from treating eye con- screening camp in Odisha, India ditions such as cataract and prescribing glasses, to campaigning for the rights of people to end avoidable blindness and promote equality with disabilities and distributing treatments for of opportunity for people with disabilities.” neglected tropical diseases, such as trachoma, Sussex based international organisation the world’s leading infectious cause of blindness. Founded by Sir John and Lady Wilson in 1950, Sightsavers was initially based in London until, in 1971, the organisation moved to a new head office in Haywards Heath. John Wilson was blinded in an accident during a school chemistry lesson, at the age of twelve - he always maintained that he didn’t think the event was tragic and referred to his blindness as nothing more than a “confounded nuisance”. Following an extended tour of Africa and the Middle East, and shocked at the scale of blindness and the living conditions he witnessed, Sir John returned home determined to do something about it. Estalishing a non -government organisation to address the prevention of blindness and provide rehabilitation for those whose sight couldn’t be saved. The organisation became Sightsavers and Sir John campaigned until his death in 1999. Lady Wilson remains closely involved as vice president and still lives in Sussex.

230 Charity Profile
Visualising a world where avoidable blindness is eliminated Since its inception the charity has provided 7.7 million cataract operations, 196 million eye examinations and 4.6 million pairs of glasses. Sightsavers vision is of a world where avoidable blindness is eliminated, and where people with visual impairments and other disabilities have the same opportunities as everyone else. Working in partnership with governments and other organisations to help people in need today, Sightsavers also works to strengthen health and education systems, so that countries can deliver their own services long into the future. Ella goes on to say, “At the heart of our ethos is delivering eye health and inclusion projects of the highest standards, and working efficiently, sustainably and transparently to have the greatest possible long-term impact.” A goal only achievable, Ella says, thanks to the generosity of the charity’s loyal supporters. Tackling childhood cataracts Globally the leading cause of blindness is cataract, a disease that, if left untreated, can cause eventual blindness. Associated with older people in the UK, cataracts can also be present from birth and in many poorer countries, where

healthcare and treatment may be less readily available, childhood cataracts can be a major cause of blindness, which, if not treated early can be irreversible. This is an area Ella is particularly passionate about: “I have been lucky enough to see for myself how a straightforward cataract operation can transform a child’s life.” Other causes of concern include neglected tropical diseases (NTDs), including trachoma and river blindness. Trachoma is particularly cruel with people experiencing extreme pain as scarring to the eyelid pulls the eyelashes inward, so with every blink they scrape against the eye. 800 million people with sight loss and other disabilities in low- and middle- income countries Many visual impairments are not curable and many of those with sight loss are routinely denied basic human rights. Sightsavers, “Believes everyone has the right to learn, earn and be happy, which is why we promote equal opportunities for people with visual impairments and other disabilities.” Most of Sightsavers programmes had to pause during the Covid-19 pandemic but have now resumed with the charity working hard to catch up and reach people who struggled to access help through the pandemic. Ella says, “It became apparent that people with disabilities, particularly women and girls, were being more harshly impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic than the wider population. Sightsavers had had previous experience in dealing with the Ebola health crisis and already had vital knowledge in adapting programmes during a health emergency. “This helped inform our response to the Covid-19 pandemic… and quickly identified how we needed to adapt our programmes to still reach people safely.”
Every address every month A gift of just £28 can help restore the sight of an adult with cataract Sightsavers, Ella says, is “Fortunate to receive incredible support from individuals who donate to our work or leave a gift in their will. We hugely value their commitment, generosity, and involvement.” People also help by fundraising, or by signing petitions, sharing information, contacting politicians etc. “We also have some fantastic corporate supporters and receive vital funding from governments, trusts, foundations, global philanthropists, and other institutions that support the charity’s mission… Every single gift… makes a huge difference to the people we help.” Sightsavers also receives donated drugs to treat certain NTDs; medication donated directly by the manufacturers as a ‘gift in kind’ – it can cost as little as £60 to protect a whole community against trachoma. The charity is excited that last year the Gambia eliminated trachoma, becoming the second country in subSaharan Africa to do so. Ella tells me that a key element in much of the charity’s work is training local health workers, including cataract surgeons, specialist teachers and health volunteers to provide their community

with the eye care service it needs. Which is, crucial to the long-term sustainability of programmes. Unless eye health services improve the number of blind people could triple by 2050 When I ask what challenges the charity faces, Ella says that the main one that springs to mind is the sheer scale. Even so, treatment for blindness is widely accepted to be among the most straightforward, scalable, successful and cost effective of all health interventions. There is also the challenge of funding the gaps left by the UK government cutting its aid budget. The charity urgently needs to recoup millions of pounds of funding lost, from its trachoma work, if it’s to stay on target to eliminate these diseases. “The other challenge in the Covid battle for Sightsavers, is how we ensure we are supporting people with disabilities, to ensure they are included in the Covid response and can access the information and health care they need. This is a hugely important part of what we do.” 01444 446600 www.sightsavers.org

Good health as we age Exercise – part 2 of 3 by Heather Smith Next in our series of things to do now you’re not in your 20’s, let’s look at exercise. Exercise is important throughout our lives, but the way we approach it should change as we get older. Warm up - Dedicating more than a minute to warming up before your workouts is going to be time well spent. Things take a little longer to get going than they used to, so do mobility drills and get the blood moving before you start the main part of your workout. You might be surprised at how well you can move after a proper warm up – not to mention the importance of maintaining or improving how well you can move overall. Prioritise resistance training - A well put together workout at home or in the gym becomes even more important with age. The muscle we hold on our bodies is precious and drops rapidly with age, so anything you can do to maintain (or improve) your muscle mass will pay huge dividends. Resistance training also has a positive impact on our bones and reduces risk of osteoporosis.
Keep turning up - Routine is hard. Especially when you’re a fully grown adult with a long list of responsibilities. But keep turning up for your workouts, keep building the routine. Even if you’re not in the mood and just put in an average workout, it still has benefits – especially over not having turned up – and might even be better sometimes since you’re less likely to wake up the next day exhausted and needing a few days to recover from the aches! They say 60% of your workouts will be average, 20% will be fantastic and 20% will be terrible – just turn up and get them done. Part 3 to follow next month. www.fitbiztraining.co.uk

240 Local Housing Market
Home Staging to sell your house Tips to help you sell faster & for a higher price by Cooper Adams The art of staging your home Property/home staging is the practice of spending time (and often money) to specifically prepare your home for sale. The purpose is to assist potential buyers in seeing themselves in your property. Putting your home on the market in a unique style may help you sell it faster and for a higher price. Repainting, improving lighting, and even swapping to more neutral furniture or accessories may all help. Home Staging Tips Cleaning - as tedious as it may seem, a thorough clean is the first step. Every room should have a clear function. For example, consider changing the upstairs spare bedroom into an office. Since every room serves a certain function, visitors are able to imagine themselves living in the property. This gives your property more selling potential. Remove as much clutter as possible from the floor and shelves to maximise the amount of visible space (including inside wardrobes). Items such as dog beds and children's toys should be out of site, ideally stored in the garage or shed. Add blankets and plush cushions to all of the beds to create a luxurious look and feel. Use neutral, matching linen on all of the beds to create a standard look which will also convey cleanliness throughout the home. Remove refrigerator magnets and other personal items from kitchen surfaces to keep them clear and uncluttered. Utilise mirrors to ‘open up’ rooms and reflect light from the surrounding area.
Add extra lighting to brighten up any darker rooms or areas. Keep the temperature at a comfortable level This can be especially important in narrow hallways when there is a limited amount of space. For more property advice, guidance and tips visit: www.cooper-adams.com

St Mary’s C of E Primary School, Washington World book day celebrations, new premises officer & cleaner
On 3rd March, St Mary’s Primary School celebrated world book day. Children came to school dressed up as their favorite book characters and enjoyed a special day full of storytelling. All pupils had the opportunity to listen to excerpts from staff members’ favourite classic books which included “The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe”, “Alice in Wonderland” and “Stig of the Dump”. The aim of this was to expose our pupils to literature which they may not have chosen for themselves from the library.
Childcare vouchers accepted
Joining us at school we had: Bilbo Baggins, Willy Wonka, Harry Potter, Supertato, Peter Rabbit, Gangster Granny and so many other brilliant book characters! The children and the staff had so much fun dressing up. In February we were lucky enough to host Jim Beckett the author of “The Caravan at the Edge of Doom”. He read to our pupils an excerpt from his book in assembly and it has been checked out of our school library ever since! In other news the school is seeking a new Premises Officer and School Cleaner. Both roles are part time and we can offer flexible working hours to suit potential applicants. For more information about both roles please call 01903 892401. www.stmaryswashington.co.uk

Leaving a charitable gift in your Will By Will Writer Emma Cohen MIPW There’s nothing better than feeling like you have made a difference. Over the past few years, we have seen an increasing popularity in leaving gifts or donations to charities in our clients Wills. Leaving a charitable gift in your Will can be easy, it’s also a great way to leave a lasting legacy and from a financial point of view, it can also reduce the tax implications for the rest of your estate.
Many of us support good causes and local charities throughout our lifetimes, so why not continue that legacy after you have gone? We often suggest that it’s a good idea to research how your gift to the charity that you choose will likely be used or indeed to specify how you would like it to be spent. You may be keen to ensure that your gift is used to fund a certain aspect of a charity, for example if you are giving to a cancer
related charity it maybe that you would like your gift to be spent on funding research.
If you have a small or estranged family specifying a charity as a reserve beneficiary can also be useful to stop intestacy laws taking place should your primary beneficiaries no longer be living at the time of your death. If you decide to leave a significant proportion of your estate to charity and you feel it may leave those expecting to inherit feeling disgruntled enough to challenge your Will, it would be wise to leave a letter of wishes with your Will explaining how you came to your decision. For more information on charitable giving or to discuss making a Will or Lasting Power of Attorney in more detail please do not hesitate to get in touch on 01903 821010 or send an email to: emma.cohen@nsure.co.uk

Storrington & Sullington neighbourhood wardens Intervention project, little life savers & reporting dog attacks We have been working with our local primary school for a while now, and not only for parking patrols. We have also initiated an early intervention project with the year 6 students. We are arranging different projects that introduce ourselves so they know who we are, recognise us as an adult they can trust in the community and can talk about any issues they are having. This is especially important as in September they will be moving up to the Weald or Rock Road middle school. As part of this project, we are joining the pupils at break times for student drop-ins and at the end of the summer term we are holding a meet and greet session with our colleagues from the Police and Fire Brigade. We are especially pleased to be working with Little Life Savers to give the year 6 pupils a basic introduction to First Aid. We are looking to make this an annual event and would like to thank the Rotary Club for assisting with the funding. This part of the project was inspired by a story of a
young person who had received similar First Aid training and saved their grandparent’s life. We have been asked several times over the last couple of months what is the best way to report out of control dogs that have attacked other dogs. This type of incident can be reported on the Horsham District Council website by typing “dog attacks” in the search bar. Information on dog attacks and a form to report a dog-on-dog attack can be found here. You will need the address of the owner and description of the dog. If a person is attacked by a dog, this must be reported to the police on 101, or 999 if it is happening at the time. Please bear in mind that if you are a dog owner it is your responsibility to keep your dog under control. This includes when the dog is both on and off the lead. If you need to make a report but do not have access to the internet, please call us and we can assist. Chris: 07795 046743 / Alison 07789 943201 storrington-sullingtonwardens@horsham.gov.uk

Storrington & District Museum The importance of a local Museum to a local community Why is having a local Museum important? The Storrington & District Museum (also covers Amberley, Ashington, Bury, Thakeham, Washington & West Chiltington) doesn’t have items of startling value. It has artifacts and paintings that belonged/refer to local people. Perhaps the most famous person who lived in the area was the author of The Forsyte Saga who lived in Bury. Whilst most local inhabitants weren’t well known outside the village, they played a part in the village’s history/development. Carl Davis, a WWII fighter ace was shot down and died in 1941 and the Greenfield family were key in running the village store. Joan Ham has done investigation and writing on Storrington’s development (Storrington in Georgian & Victorian Times, Living Memory & in Pictures, Sullington–Domesday to D-Day); others wrote how the village used to be. Not everything has been researched. We were given photo albums of the local Brownie’s group without names or dates. The plan is to have
an open day & ask those who were in the Brownies to come in and help name & date the photos. The Curatorial Team have sources for researching an ancestor/building. The Museum usually holds monthly talks on a variety of topics. It acts as a community hub with Art Exhibitions, Autumn Fair and hosted Royal British Legion’s 100th centenary last year. A Committee member has been interviewing older village residents for recollections of the village as to how it used to be. Our aim is to restart interaction with local schools to help on history curriculum or projects with guided tours. Our motto is ‘Preserving Yesterday for Tomorrow’. ‘Museums provide a sense of community and place by celebrating a collective heritage and making it a great place to get to know the history of the area’ (Rebecca Carlsson). The Museum is run by volunteers in Old School Lane, RH20 4LL, open Sat & Wed 10-4 and Sun 10-1. www.storringtonmuseum.com

Ashington Parish Council Redevelopment plans, noticeboard, volunteers & litter picking Redevelopment plans at the Parish Yard continue. As a site it has been untouched for many years, so we’ve commissioned a few investigations just to see what we are dealing with. We have several people interested in running the Tearoom so we’re in discussions over the Lease. It’s not too late to get in touch if you’re interested. The planning application was submitted on 21st February 2022. The Parish Council is in the process of organising an event for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. At this stage we’re looking to organise a simple Afternoon Tea event. We’ll be looking for any cake donations from residents. More details will be sent out in future Newsletters or posted on our Facebook. The new noticeboard will be put up at the school very shortly, we’re just waiting on delivery of some base plates, so we don’t have to excavate into the tarmac footpath. We’re planning for the hanging baskets. Did you know that we have to get the lampposts corrosion
tested every year before we can get permission to put the baskets up? The baskets weigh 28kgs when wet so the posts need to be strong enough. We’re looking to get the ponds inspected so that we can update our maintenance programme and make sure that we are managing them in the best way possible. Once again, we’re working with volunteers from the Parish Church to arrange some general tidying up around the village on their Church Mission Day on 26th March 2022. We’d like to thank one of our young residents, James Glass, for his fantastic efforts litter picking around the village. James is raising funds for the charity Turning Tides who support homeless people locally. You can donate to James’ fundraiser by visiting gofundme.com clerk@ashingtonpc.org.uk www.ashingtonpc.org.uk

Thakeham village hall
Home News Our Village Hall offers a wide range of activities for the local community. For current information on classes and courses check the website for latest details www.thakehamvillagehall.co.uk Events and Groups For support to promote your local events in April and May please contact our clerk Owen or email ThakehamEvents@outlook.com Football Plans are now in hand for works to improve the drainage of the Abingworth football fields, which will happen during the summer break from club fixtures. We have also installed an extra dog waste bin here, to prevent 'overflow'. Planning We remain in the situation that most developments in the area are held up by the need to meet 'water neutral' requirements. This is holding up several current local planning proposals, including the 25-house site at the ex-Rushfield Nursery. The final phase of houses at Abingworth will now go ahead in two sub-phases, starting soon with the western area (nearest the B2139). The Parish Council is considering further detailed amends from Bellway Homes, house numbers and locations will remain as consented by HDC in spring 2020. Abingworth Allotments The waiting list for plots at the new Abingworth allotments is now full, but if want to join a 'standby' list, contact the Parish Office. Before this article emerges, the Parish Council will have also agreed its comments on a new 30house proposal at a site just south of Furze Common Road. www.thakehamparish.co.uk/category/planningupdate/allotment-update/

Storrington & Sullington Parish Council Sandgate trucks; A27 Bypass; New waste arrangements Edited extracts from the Parish Council meeting held on 23rd February 2022. Sandgate Quarry Trucks - Reps from Inert Recycling invited to the meeting to explain reports of trucks travelling in the village centre. They blamed errors on their subcontractors but agreed to reinforce the rules to them. A27 Bypass - after discussion, it was unanimously agreed to support the Highways England Grey Route proposal. Cllr Paul Marshall (attending as Leader of West Sussex County Council) stated that he had two roles to fill when considering his response to the consultation: one as Leader of WSCC and one as a local resident. His strong feeling was that construction of the new road was crucial to West Sussex and whilst there are some villages that will suffer as a result of the proposed route, he intended to work closely with them to mitigate the issues. Waste Disposal - Following a trial that took place in Billingshurst, Cllr Dawe (Horsham DC) reported that HDC would likely be introducing changes to 1
ACCOUNTS SERVICES
the way in which refuse is collected across the district within the next year or so. Residents would be issued with a food waste bin which would be collected weekly with the collection of other nonrecycling household waste being changed to once every three weeks. Grant requests - a) 4Sight Vision Support. A grant of £200 was requested to support outreach services for four people. 4Sight Vision offers support to 22 people in this Parish. A discussion took place and it was decided not to donate on this occasion. b) West Sussex Mind. A donation of £500 was requested towards the cost of employing one support worker. The group offered services to 10 young people in the parish during the period 2020-2021. A discussion took place and Members were advised of the budget available. It was agreed to donate the sum of £100.
